The Top 9 Attractions

1. shenyang imperial palace.

While less well known than the Forbidden City of Beijing, Shenyang's Imperial Palace was built by the first Qing Emperor in 1625. During the Manchu reign of the Qing Dynasty, Shenyang became the political and cultural center of all China. It is one of Shenyang's three UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

2. Zhaoling Mausoleum

There are two tombs of the former Qing Emperors located here and both are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Admission is 50 CNY for the basic tour and visitors can expect to spend plenty of time learning the history of these early Qing Dynasty Emperors.

3. Zhongshan Square

Located in a busy part of the city, Zhongshan Square is also home to the tallest statue of Mao Zedong in the world. The buildings around the square predate the Japanese occupation and many were built by Japanese architects. The square is a gathering place and landmark for the people of Shenyang as well as visitors.

4. Korea Town

Due to Shenyang's close proximity to Korea, the love for Korean BBQ is strong throughout the city. In Xita, or Korea Town, visitors can find the best samplings of Korean cuisine to be found in China.

Xita is also home to many bars, malls, and markets featuring uniquely Korean goods. This a great place to start your exploration of Shenyang's Nightlife.

5. The 9.18 Historical Museum

Perhaps one of the most recent historical events to affect Shenyang directly, the 9.18 Museum commemorates the events surrounding

the Mukden Incident of 1931. The museum is unique in both architecture and presentation. Visitors can browse both Chinese and English accounts of the event. The reality of the Japanese invasion and occupation is still a strong memory for the city of Shenyang and is observed with a citywide moment of silence on the anniversary of the Mukden Incident.

6. Beiling Park

The largest and most beautiful park in Shenyang is Beiling ('North Hill') Park. With a fee of only 5 CNY, it's well worth the price of admission.

Ancient Chinese gardens, pristine lakes filled with pink lotus, and plenty of space for outdoor activities makes the park a popular place to spend the afternoon in Shenyang.

7. Nanguan Catholic Church

The original church was built in 1861, but was destroyed during the Boxer Rebellion. The present church was rebuilt and is known as the Sacred Heart Cathedral of Shenyang. Mass is done in both Chinese and English and visitors are welcome to explore the church grounds daily.

8. Muslim Food Street

This neighborhood is home to many members of China's Muslim minority groups and creates unique experience apart from mainstream China. The shop, markets, and restaurants here all feature Halal options and cultural goods worth perusing.

9. Shenyang Expo Garden

Built for China's International Horticultural Exposition in 2006, the Expo Garden is now a permanent fixture on the Shenyang landscape. The immaculate gardens and natural areas provide an escape from the industrial city center. Calm ponds and interactive obstacle courses mean that the Expo Garden has something to offer for everyone.

Shenyang Travel Guide

Shenyang, the capital of the Liaoning Province, is an economic, cultural, transportation, and trade center of Northeast China. It is also an important industrial and historical city, famous for its production of machine tools and other heavy duty equipment as well as its significance in China’s past as a railroad link with Russia.

Shenyang governs a total of 9 districts, 1 city, and 3 towns with an area of 13,000 square kilometers and a population of 7.204 million. This includes an urban area of 3495 square kilometers and urban population of 5.066 million.

As the provincial capital and center for industrialized goods, Shengyang is perfectly situated for trade and commerce. It rests in the hinterland of the Liaoning Peninsula in the southern part of northeast China and in the middle of the Liaoning Province, with Changbai Mountain behind and the Bohai Sea in front.

Within a radius of 150 kilometers are almost a dozen more cities that have taken production influence from Shengyang: there is Anshan (steel), Fushun (coal), Benxi (coal and iron), Fuxin (coal and electricity), Panjin (petroleum), Dandong (textile), Liaoyang (chemical fibers), and Tieling (cereal and coal). All together, these cities with such a solid strength in the central area of the Liaoning Province create a unique and unusual conglomeration. Dalian Harbor links the area to other great harbors over the world, and New Yingkou Harbor and Jinzhou Harbor are under construction to secure even more trade links; all of these are no more than 400 kilometers from Shenyang.

Its emphasis on equipment manufacturing and establishment as one of the national heavy industry bases in China was set soon after the foundation of the People's Republic of China. Meanwhile, having successively earned the titles of "National Environmental Protection Model City" and "National Forest City," Shenyang has won the award of one of the Top 10 Cities for 2 years running. And despite its long reputation of being a “gray” city, in recent years it has taken upon many initiatives to become more “green’ and environmentally friendly for a more sustainable China and world, including the promotion of parks and the protection of wildlife.

As well, Shenyang is rich in attractions for travelers and is especially famous for its historical sights. Top attractions in and around Shenyang are the Shenyang Imperial Palace, Zhaoling Tomb, and Fuling Tomb. Catching a football game is also a must-do. Shenyang was the host of the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics football matches (other host cities included Tianjin, Shanghai, Qinhuangdao, and Shanghai) at Wulihe Stadium.

A number of world class hotels cater to Shengyang’s growing tourism such as the Sheraton Shenyang Lido Hotel (5 stars), Marriot (5 stars), and Grand National Hotel (3 stars). Finally, as the central railway hub for Northeast China, visitors can easily come and go within the region.

Shenyang [dead link] (沈阳 Shěnyáng ), known as Mukden in the Manchu language, is the capital of Liaoning Province in China . Shenyang is the largest city in the northeast of China, and it is steeped in history.

Understand [ edit ]

Nurhaci built his imperial palace and was laid to rest in one of the first two imperial tombs of the Qing Dynasty, Fuling Tomb. His son Hong Taiji is buried in Zhaoling tomb, which is the second of the first two imperial tombs. The imperial palace and the two tombs are all listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites . It was in Shenyang that the Russian army was defeated by the Japanese in 1905, resulting in Japan taking control of the Liaodong Peninsula from Russia. It was also here, on September 18, 1931 that Japan would stage the Mukden incident in order to use it as a pretext to occupy all of Northeast China. This city was also the home to the warlord Zhang Zuolin and his son Zhang Xueliang who ruled over the Northeast during the 1920s. In the 20th century, Shenyang developed as a major industrial centre. Today the city is rapidly losing its older structures with large scale construction throughout the city, as in all other cities in China.

Climate [ edit ]

Shenyang has a monsoon-influenced continental climate with large seasonal variation. Winters are very cold, but dry, and can easily feature nights of −20 °C or below. Summers are hot and humid, with daytime temperatures near 30 °C, rarely pushing above into the high 30s °C, though.

By plane [ edit ]

The city is served by the Shenyang Taoxian International Airport, and by several smaller, regional airports. There are direct flights to Shenyang from most Chinese airports.

Tramway line 2 connects the airport with the Shenyang subway system. With the transfer to the subway, it takes a bit over an hour to get into downtown. An airport shuttle also runs from the airport to the main China Northern Airlines ticket office (117 Zhonghua Road; 中华路117号; Zhōnghuálù) and back frequently.

By car [ edit ]

Shenyang is connected by a major expressway, the 6-lane Jingshen Expressway, from Beijing, some 685 km (425 mi) away. Expressways also link Shenyang with Jilin and Heilongjiang provinces. The Shenda Expressway connecting Shenyang and Dalian was the first expressway ever built in China (383 km/238 mi). It is the fastest highway (8-lane) linking one of the largest port cities to Shenyang.

By train [ edit ]

Train service is provided through two train stations, the North Railway Station and the Railway Station. The North Railway Station handles the majority of the long-distance trains while the Railway Station handles most of the northeast trains and does local service around the province. Some trains travel to both stations so be aware of which station you need to board your train. High Speed Rail is available from both stations (D train). The train stations are connected with metro.

Get around [ edit ]

shenyang international travel service

Sights in the old city, Shenhe District, can be walked between, but other areas such as those in Beiling or Dongling require transport.

The Shenyang Metro has three lines. Line 1 runs east-west across the city (serving Shenyang rail station). Line 2 runs north-south (serving Shenyang North rail station). Line 9 runs in an L shape, from northwest to southwest to southeast. Line 10 runs in an L shape, from northwest to southwest to southeast.

Shenyang has a comprehensive bus system, but it can be incomprehensible if you do not read Chinese. Make sure you pick up a city bus and area map at either train station. Very handy to help get around. Buses charge ¥1-2 and major bus lines congregate around the train stations. Bus 203 travels between the two train stations.

There are plenty of taxis whose meters start at ¥8 for 3 km, then ¥1.8 per kilometer. Make sure you get a taxi in which the meter is mounted on the dashboard and easily visible from your seat instead of behind the gear shift - it is possible the driver may be pulling some sleight of hand to increase your fare.

At 22:30 on 18 September 1931, a bomb exploded beside the Japanese-run railway line near Shenyang. Though instigated by the Japanese, the Chinese were blamed for the event giving the Japanese an excuse to invade and occupy the whole of the northeast of China. Shenyang was the epicenter of that invasion, so it is most appropriate that the museum for the Mukden Incident, known in China as the '9.18 Incident', is in Shenyang next to the spot where the explosion occurred. The museum, as one would expect, depicts the incident from a Chinese perspective. It is not for the faint of heart because it unflinchingly displays the atrocities of war. Only the main descriptions are available in English, but it's enough to follow the course of events. The pictures and exhibits speak for themselves, anyway. Free .

Liaoning is home to Liaocai (辽菜), a distinctive cuisine named after the area. Liaocai tends to be strong in flavour with plenty garlic, ginger and other spices but not hot. Shenyang has a large Korean and Mongolian population, who operate a lot of barbecue stands on the street corners of the city. Some of the city's best types of cuisine include 火锅 hot pot, 麻辣烫 mala tang, or spicy pay-by-weight soup, and 串儿 chuan'r barbeque. There are many Muslim hand-pulled noodle places, and also a number of very good Korean restaurants. All of Shenyang's top hotels feature fancy restaurants serving Cantonese, Japanese and Western food. At least two different places offering Mexican specials. There are also some decent noodle shops, as well as the national chain California Beef Noodle, on some of the small roads near the train station.

Fast food and coffee shops are plentiful. The imported, western style food tends to be at the higher end of the price market. By going after local cuisine you will save money. One of the absolute best places to try cheap and savoury local foods is at the 彩电塔 Cai Dian Ta night market near the Liaoning Radio Tower, located just west of the Kempinski hotel and 青年公园 Qingnian Gongyuan Station. This market is full of cheap barbeque 串儿 chuan'r, with selections as various as chicken necks, pig feet, or tofu rolls. There are also various noodle dishes, potato dishes, soft-serve ice cream and fruit jelly desserts, and a Liaoning starch specialty known as 闷子 Menzi. It stretches across several streets, and is generally open from the end of March until late October as crowds die down over the winter months.
