United kingdom.

Regal. Charming. Scenic.

Comprised of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales, the United Kingdom definitely has dozens of reasons worth leaving home for. Mountains, valleys, hills and dales, forests and gardens, oh and no less than 25 UNESCO World Heritage sites scattered throughout, are but a few. You will find a slew of cathedrals, castles, palaces and country houses spanning history. Centuries of inspiring the world, influencing the arts, and forming natural beauty have developed this land into one great nation.

Destination Must-See's

UK ms1

A world in a city is a common way to describe the metropolis of London, the capital of England. A cultural melting pot of over 230 nationalities, London is the financial, political and cultural capital of the UK. It is booming with activity and bursting with sightseeing treasures. You’ll find historic highlights from the haunting Tower of London to the ornate Buckingham Palace and more modern attractions such as the world-famous Harrods department store and the towering London Eye.

UK ms2

The capital city and second most populous in Scotland, Edinburgh has been recognized for its historic and cultural attractions. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the UK after London. Great shopping, historic architecture and great Scottish whisky are just part of its allure. Its greatest draw is Edinburgh Castle. This sprawling medieval castle and fortress sits atop Castle Rock in the city center, dominating Edinburgh’s skyline.

UK ms3

Giant’s Causeway:

At the foot of the basalt cliffs on the coast of Northern Ireland’s County of Antrim lies the stunning Giant’s Causeway. Travelers flock to this UNESCO World Heritage site to experience the 40,000 massive dark columns rising from the sea. The natural phenomena has sparked legends of giants and magic, but its unique geology points to volcanic activity from over 50 million years ago. The Giant’s Causeway is a beautiful sight and the experience of a lifetime.

UK ms4

Cornwall, a region located on a peninsula in southwest England, is comprised of many different towns and villages that feature beautiful beaches and picturesque coastlines. Bordered by the Celtic Sea and the English Channel, one of its most popular towns is St. Ives. This seaside port town just north of Penzance on the coast of the Celtic Sea is known as the art center of West Cornwall and has a sub-tropical feel and beautiful beaches.

Destination Must-Do's

UK md3

England’s Lake District:

Lose yourself in the natural beauty of this mountainous region in northwest England dotted with tranquil lakes. One of the picturesque villages in the region is Grasmere, once home of and inspiration to the romantic poet William Wordsworth. Perhaps you will take a sail on one of the lakes and take in the peaceful backdrop of lush green mountains, serene shorelines and pristine calm waters dotted with tiny islands.

UK md2

Stonehenge:

Walk in the footsteps of so many before you when visiting prehistoric Stonehenge. This mysterious rock formation dates back to the Stone Age and remains one of the world’s most famous sites. Standing in the middle of the most dense complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age monuments in England, Stonehenge is perhaps the most important prehistoric monument in England. The experience of seeing this timeless monument is not to be missed – it will surely be a highlight of your visit.

UK md1

This large, deep freshwater loch in the Scottish Highlands extends approximately 23 miles southwest of the city of Inverness. Loch Ness is best known for the alleged sightings of the Loch Ness monster. While Loch Ness is not the largest Scottish loch by surface area, it is the largest by volume, with its deepest point at 755 feet. Along the shore, you will find the ruins of Urquhart Castle. This once mighty site rests on the headwaters of Loch Ness and dates back as far as the 13th century.

UK md4

Prepare to step back in time in the English countryside. The Cotswolds are roughly 25 miles across and 90 miles long, stretching from Stratford-upon-Avon to Bath. The region is known for its small towns and villages with homes made from golden colored Cotswold stone and grass roofs that sit among lush greenery and rolling hills. Stratford-upon-Avon is perhaps its most famous town. Lying along the River Avon, it’s famed for being the birthplace of William Shakespeare, one of the world’s great playwrights. Be sure to make a trip to see the Royal Shakespeare Company and the Royal Shakespeare Theatre.

Expert Advice

diana

Think “go to the right.” It is their natural flow of traffic even when it comes to walking. It is important to not only look both ways when crossing the street, but also when on an escalator, stand to the right. When walking down the street, stay alert and follow the flow – to the right.

UK e2

Expect to be offered tea, a lot. The British love their tea and not only during afternoon tea, any time for any reason. But you should know there is a “proper” way to drink it. The rules are – sit up straight, do not blow on it, take small sips with your pinky down, and put the cup on the saucer between sips. Now you are prepared to sip away.

UK e3

Bring a raincoat and umbrella, as it rains one out of three days in the UK. It does vary from region to region, but generally speaking, they are important items to have on hand at all times.

Learn more about United Kingdom

Best time to visit the united kingdom.

The UK shines from June to August, though there’s never any guarantee that their summer is full of sunshine and warmth. The days are long, tourist crowds are abundant and the country wakes up from its dark slumber and celebrates – a lot.

Spring and autumn can be cool and wet but with some sunny days, and the days are still long enough to enjoy this country’s diverse and beautiful scenery.

Winter – December to February - brings short days, grey skies and sometimes snow, though this is more often in Scotland and England’s northern counties.

History and government

Early history.

The United Kingdom came into being in 1707 with the political union of England and Scotland (Wales was classed under the Kingdom of England). In 1800, the Act of Union with the Kingdom of Ireland formed the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. The last major change was in 1922, when the Anglo-Irish Treaty saw the Irish Free State form and secede from the UK, and Northern Ireland becoming part of the UK (though it wasn’t until 1927 that the UK formerly changed its name to United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland). Though united, each country had their own laws, churches and education systems.

Recent history

The 18th and 19th centuries were notable for the UK’s countless wars with France, colonisation in the Caribbean, the loss of colonies in North America, the gain of Canada, the discovery of Australia, the second wave of the British Empire in India, Asia and Africa, the beginnings of the industrial revolution, the abolishment of slavery and the long and successful reign of Queen Victoria. Needless to say, this is but a snapshot. The first half of the 20th century was marred by two devastating world wars, which not only devastated the population but the wealth of the country. It also saw the crumbling of the British Empire, with independence being sought and won in Ireland in 1922 and India in 1947, and by the 1980s Britain had withdrawn from all of its colonies. In 1997 devolution was established in Scotland and Wales.

2. Loch Ness

Go searching for ‘Nessie’ in Loch Ness and decide if the myth is true. Loch Ness is located near Inverness. It's shrouded in mystery and surrounded by beautiful landscapes. Lochs are formerly known as lakes, and there are plenty to see in the Scottish Highlands .

3. Isle of Iona

Top 5 British subcultures

Stylish in tailored suits and classy shoes, mods’ hey-day was the early to mid sixties. They rode around on vespas, listened to modern jazz, were attracted to late night cafés and got into rumbles with rockers.

2. Skinheads

Originally nothing to do with hooligans, racists and fascism, skinheads were born in the 1960s in working class areas of the UK. Skinheads fashioned themselves on Jamaican rude boy style, listened to ska and wore tight jeans, white t-shirts, braces, checked shirts and cherry red docs.

3. Glam rockers

Glam rockers wore high shoes, outrageous clothes, dramatic makeup, lavish hairstyles and plenty of things that glittered. This subculture rose to prominence in the early 1970s and faded out about 5 years later, but went on to influence punk, goths and new romantics. Think David Bowie’s androgynous phase and Garry Glitter.

Though not originating in the UK, when punk hit the UK’s shores in the mid 70s, it was hard to miss. UK punks were on the whole more theatrical than those in the US. Armed with anti-establishment views, mohawks, ripped clothes held together by safety pins (anti-fashion), piercings and thrashing around to punk rock, punk caused a big stir, which died down not long after it exploded.

An offshoot of the post-punk scene, goth became popular in the early 1980s. Although there are many styles of goth, they are characterised by wearing dark clothes, heavy make-up and dark hair.

Best UK Tours 2023/4 – Reviews & Itinerary Guide

By: Author Tracy Collins

Posted on Last updated: June 13, 2023

Taking one of the many UK tours on offer can be a great way to explore the United Kingdom if this is one of your first trips in the UK. There are several advantages to taking a guided or self-guided tour for part (or all) of your time visiting the UK.

Guided tours of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland allow you to minimise the travel hassle as you’ll have a company to do most of the planning for you, and many of the United Kingdom tour package options we’ve included here allow you to see far more of the UK in a shorter period of time than it would be possible to do on your own.

Guided tours of UK can also offer good value for money, and there are some great UK trip packages on offer. Unfortunately, choosing which UK tour to take is not so easy – as the choice of tours in UK can be really overwhelming. There are just so many, so where to start looking?

In this guide I’ll walk you through some of my favourite UK tour itineraries and how to choose the best UK tour that’s right for you. Whether you’re looking for England tours, cheap UK tours, all-inclusive England vacation packages, or the best coach holidays UK has, you’ll find plenty of options in this blog. I’ve also included some of my recommended cycling and walking holidays UK has for those looking for an active break.

Let’s get started with the best Great Britain tours 2023/4 options on offer!

Best Tours of Great Britain – Comparison Chart

If you want to compare even more of the best coach trips the UK has or other styles of tour, I recommend TourRadar as a great place to compare tours and read more UK tour reviews.

When planning for your trip to England or the rest of the UK, it’s important to take seasonality into consideration. I go over all the details of the weather and the seasons in the UK here in this article .

When comparing tour operator UK options and which trip to take, be aware that UK tours tend to run with reduced frequency during the winter months, with many of the best UK tour packages running more frequently in spring and summer (April – August).

While some British coach holidays run year-round, speciality outdoor trips such as cycling holidays UK options may only run during summer months.

Best United Kingdom Tours – Choosing the Best Tour for you

When searching for the best UK travel packages and tours, there are many factors to consider. Here are some of the top things I recommend taking a few minutes to think about before deciding on the best tour of Britain for you:

Many of the most popular UK guided tour options are small group tours. UK small group tours vary widely in size with what is deemed to be a ‘small’ group – with some having up to 50 in a group while others keep it to 12 or under.

Coach tours UK options are a convenient way to travel around with the rest of your group and often allow more to be fitted into an itinerary than independently travelling by train.

These range in style and you can find plenty of luxury coach holidays UK options as well as budget bus tours UK.

If you want to take the train but also like the idea of a guided tour, you could consider one of the train holidays UK options listed below.

This is the one most of us forget to consider! In order to fit as much in as possible, some of the popular coach holidays in England and the rest of the UK move very fast, taking in multiple cities and sights in a day and usually spending only 1 night in a place.

This can get tiring, so if you prefer to spend at least a couple of nights in each place, check for itineraries that allow you more time or you could consider choosing one of the self-drive holidays UK options available.

Also, see our tips at the end of this article for extending your stay in the UK by spending extra days in London, Edinburgh, or any of the other common UK tour starting and endpoints.

England vacation packages and tours have different inclusions depending on the style of trip and company.

Most include transport, guide, accommodation and some meals, but check the small print so you know what you are and aren’t getting included on tours to England.

The entrance fees to many sights are often not included in tour pricing.

Bibury in The Cotswolds.

Best Great Britain Tours (England, Scotland, Wales)

Below you’ll find our favourite United Kingdom trip tour packages that take in England, Scotland and in some cases Wales, too. For tours that also include Ireland, see the next section.

Best for seeing England & Scotland at a more leisurely pace

Starting in Edinburgh and finishing in London, this 11-day journey through some of England and Scotland’s finest sights is a great option for those wanting to travel in comfort or who are looking for the best UK tours for seniors.

This is one of our favourite England and Scotland tour packages if you prefer a tour that spends 1-2 nights in each place and allows you to relax more in the places that you visit.

Staying at 4* accommodations throughout the trip, this itinerary starts in Edinburgh and takes in Gretna Green, the stunning Lake District , historic York, Stratford-upon-Avon, the Cotswolds and Bath before finishing up in London.

Travel is by private coach.

As trips to England and Scotland go, this Insight Vacations UK trip is one for those who want to see the best of the UK’s history, natural beauty and culture in comfort and style. If you have additional time, we highly recommend adding on extra days in London or Edinburgh (or both!).

Starting in London and finishing in Edinburgh, this 10 day London – Scotland tour by Trafalgar Tours England is a great option for those who want to see as much as possible during their trip and don’t mind travelling at a faster pace.

One of the popular tours of England and Scotland, this itinerary spends 3 days taking in the sights of London at the start of the tour, so you don’t need to worry about booking additional time at the start of the tour (unless you want to).

From London, head north to Oxford and Bath before crossing the Welsh borders and exploring some fine Welsh castles . You’ll also visit Chester, Lancaster and Hadrian’s wall before finishing in Edinburgh.

If you want to include a trip to Wales in your UK tour itinerary then this is a great tour to go for, and history lovers will enjoy every stop of this trip that showcases the UK’s history from the Wars of the Roses to Roman Bath – you even get to stay at Ruthin Castle in Wales – a 13th century castle with its original moat!

Best for seeing it all in seven days

If you only have seven days to spend in the UK, this whistle-stop tour will whisk you up and down the length and breadth of Britain to introduce you to the highlights. Included on the itinerary are a list of destinations for day trips outside London – and beyond.

The cities of Bath, Cambridge and York in England, plus the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, are included. Stratford-upon-Avon is also visited as the home of the UK’s most revered playwright. Experiences to savour include seeing Britain’s highest peak, Ben Nevis in Scotland, and enjoying a traditional roast dinner in historic, compact York.

In addition to Georgian Bath and the capital London, this seven day tour takes you to some other fascinating UK locations too. There’s sculptor Antony Gormley’s famous Angel of the North artwork, a Scottish border town, Edinburgh Castle and the Royal Mile, and the Scottish Highlands and Loch Ness.

Once you head down the west coast, the musical and sporting city of Liverpool awaits. You’ll also venture into Wales to see the city of Cardiff and a mediaeval Welsh castle. After touring Bath, the last stop en route back to London is Stonehenge. This ancient site is shrouded in mystery – and a must on the itinerary of every visitor to the UK.

Steam train crossing the Glenfinnan viaduct.

Best for train travel and rail holidays UK

There’s arguably nothing more quintessentially British than train travel – and if life on the rails in Britain is what you’ve been romanticising about, then this is one of the train tours UK for you.

This UK rail itinerary takes in the best of Scotland and England, with the chance to ride on one of the best-known steam train trips UK has to offer on the Jacobite steam train from Fort William to Mallaig.

You’ll travel on the West Highland Line, North East Main Line that links Edinburgh and York, and the West Coast Mainline south from Glasgow.

Travel is at a more leisurely pace with 2 nights spent in most cities, staying in mostly 4* hotels. You’ll also get to see Bath and Stonehenge before finishing in London.

If you’re looking for guided tours of England and Scotland by train, this is a great itinerary to go for. You’ll get to experience many of the UK’s best-known railways and take in the country’s top historic and cultural sights along the way. Travel is by train and private coach.

View over the Lake District in England.

The Lake District & Scotland – Rabbie’s – 9 Days

Best for taking in the beautiful scenery of the Lake District & Scottish Highlands

Rabbie’s tours of the UK offer great value for money, and if you want to be immersed in some of the UK’s finest landscapes and are interested in guided walking holidays UK options, this is a great way to dip your toes in.

Starting in Manchester, this itinerary is a ‘rail and trail’ combination of 2 Rabbie’s trips , meaning you’ll change minibus and guide half way through.

First you’ll explore the stunning Lake District in the beautiful north west of England, enjoying Windermere and Ullswater before taking the train up to Edinburgh for your Highlands adventure that visits some of the most scenic spots on Scotland’s west coast: Uban, Mull and Skye before heading back to the mainland to visit the iconic Eilean Donan castle.

If you’re looking for the best adventure tours UK has, then we recommend Rabbie’s who deliver great tours at a budget-friendly price point for those who love the outdoors.

View over Loch Ness can be seen on some of the best UK tours.

Best for Scottish Highlands exploring and Solo Trips UK.

If you’re looking to focus your UK trip on Scotland , then this 7 day Scotland tour from Edinburgh by G Adventures is well worth a look.

G Adventures also offer very reasonable single supplements if you’re looking for the best solo holidays uk options – or you can choose to share a room with another traveller of the same sex. Either way, G Adventures UK is popular with solo travellers.

Starting in Edinburgh and finishing in Glasgow, this Scotland tour takes in Inverness and the famous Loch Ness, Culloden Moor (famous for the Jacobite rising of 1745), the beautiful Isle of Skye and Fort William, with a chance to snap the famous Jacobite Steam Train crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct (a must for Harry Potter fans) en route.

Accommodation is on a twin-share basis in 3* hotels and travel is by private minibus.

If you want the highlights of the highlands of Scotland, this is a good tour to go for, with the option to add on extra days at the start or end of your tour – you could easily spend more time in Edinburgh, or head down to London.

The Orkney Islands.

Off the beaten-path Highlands of Scotland

One of our favourite Great Britain vacation packages for getting a little off the beaten path is this wonderful northern Scotland adventure by Insight Vacations. Perfect for those wanting to see more of the Scottish Highlands or try something different when it comes to the many UK holiday packages.

Starting in Edinburgh, on this upscale tour you’ll take in Inverness and Loch Ness, the beautiful and remote Orkney Islands at the northern tip of Scotland – a part that few visitors see – before heading south down the west coast of Scotland to take in the Isle of Skye, the stunning Glencoe pass and Loch Lomond before finishing up in Glasgow.

Accommodation is in 4* hotels and travel is by private coach.

This is certainly one of the best UK coach holidays 2021 has to offer if the Scottish Highlands have been calling to you. You’ll love this one if you want to see the full diversity of landscapes and richness of community and culture that Scotland has.

Best of Scotland

Best for uncovering all four corners of Scotland

If you want to find the best luxury coach tours in the UK that cover much of what lies north of the border, then the Best of Scotland tour from Trafalgar is a popular option for summer. The adventure begins in the capital of Edinburgh on day one. You’ll then be transported around Bonnie Scotland for seven days before ending up in Glasgow.

This vibrant city lies to the west of Edinburgh. It’s the biggest in Scotland in terms of both population and square mileage. The metropolis is renowned for its magnificent architecture and as a cultural hub for fans of music, museums and more.

After arrival and on the second day of the tour, you’ll delve deeper under the surface of the historic and breathtakingly beautiful Scottish capital. Key sights including Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile and Palace of Holyroodhouse are visited during your guided tour, and you’ll also enjoy free time to spend as you wish.

Between leaving Edinburgh and arriving in Glasgow – both of which are in southern Scotland – you’ll head north. The first stop is St. Andrews, where Prince William met Kate Middleton, before overnighting at a hotel in the Cairngorms National Park. During day four, you’ll visit the site of the famous Jacobite uprising, see Eilean Donan Castle, look out for the Loch Ness Monster and head over to the Isle of Skye.

The fifth day of the tour includes Ben Nevis and Glencoe en route to Glasgow. After staying overnight there, you’ll take a city tour before calling at Clydeside whisky distillery and Stirling Castle on day six. Day seven is departure day, unless you decide to stay on in Glasgow for longer.

Best for touring unspoiled Scotland

If what appeals to you most about the British Isles is the chance to spend time in Bonnie Scotland, this tour to far northern Scotland might be the one for you. It’s what Great Britain vacations are made of for many – beguiling cities, beautiful coastline and of course a dazzlingly rich and varied history.

Day one transports you from Edinburgh to Inverness, via the famous Forth Bridge, picture-perfect Perthshire, the peaceful village of Dunkeld, the fascinating Highland Folk Museum, the Cairngorms National Park, bloody Culloden Battlefield and the standing stones at Clava Cairns.

Next up on the second day is the spectacular North Coast 500 trail, via French-style Dunrobin Castle, en route to the island of Orkney. Puffin territory and an astonishingly well-preserved Neolithic settlement await after overnighting on Orkney.

Both the better-known and lesser seen sights of Scotland make up much of the tour’s second half. These include Smoo Cave in Sutherland, the harbour village of Ullapool, Eilean Donan Castle, the Isle of Skye, the Jacobite Steam Train from Mallaig to Fort William and Glencoe.

During the last day, you can also choose to take an optional side trip to one of the Western Isles – namely Iona, Kerrera, Mull or Staffa. Alternatively, climb up Battery Hill in Oban or call into the

local Whisky Distillery. Finally, before heading back to Edinburgh, visit the Kelpies and Stirling Castle.

Aerial view of Keswick in the Lake District

Best England, Ireland, Scotland Tour packages

Some of these itinerary options include the best England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales tours for a comprehensive circuit of the British Isles, while others combine Ireland and Scotland to get a fuller taste of the Celtic lands.

View of evening in Dublin can be appreciated on some of the best UK tours.

Best for a whistle-stop tour of the UK and Ireland

If seeing England and Scotland isn’t enough for you, then you might like to add on Ireland. This ten day trip is arguably the best way to see England, Scotland and Ireland in one hit. It lasts for ten days, and packs far more into that time than you could feasibly manage on a self-guided basis.

First up after departing London is Shakespeare country and Stratford-upon-Avon, then it’s the Yorkshire cities of York and Bradford. The Yorkshire Dales, Lake Windermere, Gretna Green and Glasgow are then on the agenda for day three.

There’s a day in Edinburgh for the fourth day, before heading to Ayrshire, Belfast, Dublin, Kilkenny and Waterford on day five and six. Cardiff, Bath and Windsor are the final stops before the tour winds up back in London.

This tour offers incredible value for money, and really maximises each and every day when time in the UK is tight.

Best for trips to England and Ireland that include the main highlights

If you’re looking at tours of England, Scotland and Ireland, then this 10 day trip by Globus may tick all the right boxes.

Start and end in London on this tour that takes in the English highlights of Stonehenge and Bath before exploring Newport and Cardiff in Wales en route by ferry to Waterford and Dublin in Ireland.

Head north through Ireland towards the up-and-coming city of Belfast and crossing back into Scotland to take in the sights of the Scottish capital, Edinburgh.

On the final leg you’ll head south through York and Stratford upon Avon to London to soak up the best of English history. Travel is by coach.

This is one of the best tours of England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland if you’re tight on time and don’t want to forgo any of the countries of the British Isles. The travel is at a fairly fast pace though – so you may wish to add on a few days to relax at the end of your trip.

Snow peaked mountains in Glencoe.

Best for combining Scottish Highlands & Ireland

One of the comprehensive UK tours from London options in this list, this itinerary works well if you want to start in London and have a few days before your trip starts to explore the UK’s capital – either through an extension booked through Insight or under your own steam.

Leaving London, this ultimate UK tour takes in the historic English highlights of Stratford and York before heading past Hadrian’s Wall to Edinburgh and circling the Scottish Highlands.

Take in the legendary sights of Loch Ness, Glencoe and a boat trip on Loch Lomond before heading back south into England and Wales, and crossing over into Ireland.

Travel is by private coach and accommodation is at 4* hotels.

On this grand UK tour, you’ll spend a total of 5 nights in Ireland and 7 in England & Scotland, making this the perfect UK tour packages from London when you just want to see it all!

Portree on the Isle of Skye.

Best for English countryside and Roman history

Following the route of Hadrian’s Wall makes for one of the best road trips in the UK. Though the wall is quite justifiably famous, the route along it is far less touristy than other parts of the British Isles. The wall stretches from near Newcastle-upon-Tyne in the east to the compact city of Carlisle in the west.

Hadrian’s Wall can be found within the more peaceful parts of England’s two most northerly counties. As this is a walking tour you’ll need a reasonable level of fitness, but this also means you’ll get up really close to the sights of Cumbria and Northumberland. And of course the unspoiled English countryside, with its dry stone walls and sheep-dotted emerald fields.

To give you some idea of the distances, the first day’s walk is around eight miles, between Carlisle and Irthington. Other walks include the six mile trek between Lanercost Priory and Gilsland, the three-and-a-half Walltown Crags to Haltwhistle route and seven miles from Once Brewed to Brocolitia Fort. It’s also nine miles from Chollerford to East Wallhouses, and about five from East Wallhouses to Wylam.

Highlights of this tour include the pretty Cumbrian village Crosby-on-Eden; Birdoswald, Housesteads, Brocolitia and Vindolanda Roman Forts, Walltown quarry, Sycamore Gap, the site of the victory of Oswald and the historic old Military Road.

Best Tour Companies UK Reviews

Not sure which of the best travel agency UK options you should pick? Below you can find a short review of what to expect when travelling with any of the UK tour companies mentioned above.

G Adventures tours are known for their good value and experience-rich approach. They attract travellers of all ages, both couples and solo travellers, thanks to their twin-share policy where single travellers can travel at no extra cost if they share with another traveller of the same sex.

Travel is in small groups (max 12) and includes a local tour guide “CEO”. Accommodation is in mid-range hotels and guest houses, and typically breakfasts and entry to some sights are included.

Travel in the UK is mostly by private mini-bus unless otherwise stated.

Popular for coach tours in the UK and around the world, Globus Journeys offer guided coach tours in the UK and Ireland, either with smaller groups (max 24) or larger groups (up to 50) depending on the style of the trip.

Accommodation is typically in tourist class hotels (3* and 4*) with well known brands. Globus is popular among travellers aged in their 50’s, 60’s and up for the convenience of travel by coach and their tours have more meals and excursions included than some.

Expect itineraries that pack places in, so you’ll see a lot, and stays are typically 1 night.

GRJ are the go-to for UK steam tours and railway journeys around the UK and beyond, so if travelling the UK by train is what you’re hoping to do, look no further.

Itineraries are designed to take in iconic lines and to provide the best steam train holidays UK has (or ‘regular’ trains). Journeys are escorted by a Tour Manager, and the majority of travellers are either solo travellers or couples aged between 45 – 80.

Accommodation is in 3* hotels or higher. The maximum group size on any trip is 50, or you can opt for a tailor made travel experience.

Insight Vacations are an upscale tour company offering luxury UK coach tours with up to 40 people per group.

Travellers are typically 45 and up, and itineraries are a little more relaxed than many other tour companies, including 2 night stays at many destinations and “relaxed starts” in the morning spread out through the trip allowing time to catch up on rest if you need it.

Accommodation is in 4* hotels and trips are accompanied by a tour manager.

Famous for great value adventures around the world, in the UK Intrepid offer a range of shorter ‘retreat’ style trips – so if you’re after hiking trips UK or a guided walking and cycling holiday, look no further.

Accommodation is in local guest houses and you’ll be accompanied by your own Intrepid Travel guide for the duration of the trip.

Maximum group size is 12, and rooms are on a twin share basis with the same sex if you’re a solo traveller, or you can pay a supplement to have your own room.

Offering a mix of small group tours, independent adventures, cruises and self-drive vacations, Indus Travels allows you to set your own pace of travel with flexible itineraries when you choose one of their ‘unbundled tours’ or self-drive trips.

Self-drive trips are just you, your car rental, itinerary and accommodation, whereas group tours have up to 22 travellers, English-speaking local guides, deluxe accommodation and air conditioned coaches included.

Indus is popular with younger and older travellers alike, with many travellers in their 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.

Well known and popular Trafalgar Tours England have been offering coach travel around the UK for many years and have many happy customers behind them.

Group tours have a maximum of 50 people, travelling by coach to the most popular destinations. They are popular for England tours for seniors (and younger people), and on any of their England tour packages you’re guaranteed to have a lot packed into your itinerary. That’s one thing to bear in mind – this is definitely not slow travel – but it’s a good way to get an overview of the British Isles.

All tours are accompanied by a guide and accommodation is tourist class 3* or 4* international standard hotels.

Rabbie’s tours have some great England travel deals (and beyond). They’re a small group tours company providing great value breaks that help you get off the beaten track in the UK and Europe.

Rabbie’s aim to support local communities and promote responsible travel, by keeping tour groups small (10 people). They also work differently to other tour companies in that accommodation is not included in the tour price – once you book your tour you can choose your accommodation from a selection offered by Rabbie’s to suit your budget and preferences.

The name Rabbie’s comes from the nickname for famous Scot, Robert Burns!

Image of the river Thames and the London Eye in London sights included in a few of the best UK tours.

If you have a day, two, or more aside from your tour, we highly recommend taking advantage of those to explore London, or another city if your tour is starting from elsewhere – Edinburgh is another popular starting point for the UK tours mentioned in this guide.

While some tours include sightseeing in London (or another departure city), not all do – or they include a very shortened version – and trust us that 1 day is definitely not enough to see London in, especially if you’re jetlagged.

If you can, arrive a few days before your tour begins to enjoy the top London sights and get onto UK time if you’re flying in from far away. You can find our complete London travel guide here to get you started.

10-Day Ultimate Ireland Small Group Tour Tour

10-Day Ultimate Ireland Small Group Tour

We just finished an outstanding 10-day Ultimate Ireland Small Group Tour with our exceptional guide, Finn! We selected this tour as it had, for us, the right combination of the highlights of Ireland and varied activities, it included both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, and it was a small group tour. This tour absolutely exceeded our already high expectations! The itinerary proved to be excellent, but a lot of the credit for the success of the tour has to go to Finn. Like any good teacher, he is truly passionate about his country and sharing all it has to offer! He shared his knowledge and love of Irish history, literature, culture, sports and music throughout the tour which added so much depth and color to our adventure. Finn is competent, personable, patient, funny, and flexible — to name a few of his many virtues. He proved to be an excellent driver as we traversed many winding, narrow and challenging roads! He kept us on schedule, made modifications when needed, and provided us with a smooth running tour and a once in a lifetime experience for our group! We highly recommend Finn and the 10-day Ultimate Ireland Small Group Tour! We made new friends and enjoyed a lot of fun and laughter along the way!!

7-Day Ireland to Island Small Group Tour of Ireland

Last week my wife and I did the seven day Ireland to Island tour. It was amazing, and our guide Pat was awesome! We saw and did so many things during our adventure, there's no way we could have seen and done all that we did if we would have tried to plan a trip ourselves. All the details were taken care of. Pat ensured there was flexibility when it came to activities, meals, and nighttime activities. Plus, Pat had so much knowledge of the history and culture of Ireland, it was like we experienced a college-level course on those subjects over the course of our trip. We also had the privilege of having Jessica, a relatively new employee of Overland, join us on the tour. Her added perspective and fun personality were an unexpected bonus. We learned that Jessica plans personalized tours, so if you are looking for that instead of a small group tour you will be fortunate to work with Jessica to make that happen. You will not be disappointed if choose Overland Ireland!

The Celtic Voyage - Multi-Day - Small Group Tour of Ireland

Mike and Team do a great job, friendly and very professional in accommodating people from all over the place. A very good selection of attractions, pointing out special locations, ending in a awesome relaxing tour! Looking forward for similar tours in the future!

Northern & Southern Ireland Tour

Northern & Southern Ireland

there is a difference between, a tour guide and a tour leader, this i did not know. a leader is the organizer of all events, transportation and accommodations. Zoe far exceeded my expectations in this role, and i would highly recommend her. She was not a tour guide. I was expecting more information about the people, locations and cultures of Ireland.

Wonderful small bus experience. I think we saw everything there was to see. Lots of fun.

Wild South - Multi-Day - Small Group Tour of Ireland Tour

Wild South - Multi-Day - Small Group Tour of Ireland

The Wild South Tour was an excellent tour overall, very good value! The guides (Diarmuid and Michael) were great. The add-ons were reasonable and well worth the extra cost. We (my husband and I) especially liked the boat trip to the Skellig Islands. There was a lot of time in the van, but we realized that the best sites were far apart, so the travel was necessary. It was okay. We were so glad to see so many beautiful and memorable sites in very congenial company. I have recommended this tour to friends, with one caveat (see below). However, there was one glaring anomaly: the night and hotel in Cork. Our room at the REZz Hotel is the worst I’ve ever encountered. It was tiny, even too tiny for a single, and unbearably hot with no AC or fan. There was no place to sit (seriously, no chairs at all and only one person at a time could sit on the bed because most of it was blocked by a wall!!). No place to open luggage except on the floor in front of the door. Fire hazard. It all looked and felt dirty and kind of creepy. Totally UNACCEPTABLE! Breakfast featured packaged cookies/bars and half-rotten fruit. I was quite alarmed and worried about the rest of the Wild South tour! Thank goodness this was an anomaly. The rest of our accommodations were excellent — as good or better than the Ashling Hotel for which I paid $300/night for the night before and the night after the tour. I was really impressed with all tour accommodations EXCEPT for the Hotel REZz on that first night. I hope Wild & Happy finds another accommodation in Cork for the sake of future travelers.

6-Day Outer Hebrides & Skye Adventure Small-Group Tour from Edinburgh Tour

6-Day Outer Hebrides & Skye Adventure Small-Group Tour from Edinburgh

Our Driver Michael from Radar was just Okay, too many off color stories, played music from his own playlist and so we weren't able to make requests. I requested more bagpipe or Scottish songs and he said his playlist didn't include bagpipe songs, he didn't care for them, and the too many of the Scottish songs he played were by the singer he adored. Heard too much about her. When we picked up an additional 4 passengers on the second day he forgot to do introductions. He pointed out too many houses he'd like to live in, which isn't interesting to us. He should add more history of Scotland to his commentary instead of his stories, which had nothing to do with our tour, too many comments about the singer he adores. Michael added a 2.5 hour visit to a weaver, which I wasn't able to participate in due to my asthma, so that was a waste of 2.5 hours. If he wanted to visit the weaver, he should have dropped off those who were interested and offered to visit something else with the rest. As far as the tour goes, too many beaches, stopped at 3 because Michael like beaches, not enough castles, old churches/cathedrals/ waterfalls, historical sites. When we arrived in Stornoway on Sunday, most of the stores and restaurants were closed. Perhaps arrange a box dinner. When we stayed at the same hotel or B&B for 2 nights, we discoved the first night dinners needed to be booked earlier or you ended up with no dinner or picked up something like cheese and crackers at the grocery store. Perhaps offer to make reservations for the first night from a list of possible restaurants. Need to add maps of the area of the tour for us to use as a reference and souvenir and a whiteboard for the driver to add notes, and times to be back when we stopped. Without maps we had no reference points as to where we were. Also a list of the major stops, not the coffee/toilet stops, so we can know what is planned. My primary reason for the trip was that I wanted to see the Dunvegan Castle as it is my ancestrial home and didn't see it until the 5th day, which by then I figured I wouldn't get to visit it. When we talked about what we wanted to see/the reason for our trip during our introductions, Michael should have pointed out if or when we would get to visit that mentioned places, so we weren't left to wonder if it would happen.

5-Day Devon & Cornwall Small Group from London Tour

5-Day Devon & Cornwall Small Group from London

This was the first multi-day tour I have taken. I have always been concerned about being locked in to an itinerary with a large group of strangers and the loss of liberty etc. I was happy with the way this tour turned out - smallish group, being left to tour stops on your own, and mostly interesting stops (I would replace Tavistock with something else in Devon - say Torquay perhaps - but I realize there are logistical constraints as well). I think Samuel did an excellent job - he was able to set a playful mood, articulate relevant historical information and keep things running smoothly. One suggestion: the bus should have wifi.

5-Day Northern Ireland & Atlantic Coast Small-Group Tour from Dublin Tour

5-Day Northern Ireland & Atlantic Coast Small-Group Tour from Dublin

I loved my 5 day tour of the north of Ireland! Gabriel was funny and full of information about every area we visited. He also gave great advice on pubs and restaurants during the trip. I was originally scheduled to tour the south, but I’m glad I was able to experience Northern Ireland and the rugged beauty of Donegal and Mayo. I can’t wait to go back!

Classic Scotland Self Drive Tour

Classic Scotland Self Drive

An excellent tour. Excellent hotels and average B&Bs. We did not know that a couple of places were going to have the hotels substituted for B&Bs, The B&B in Inverness was average (although the hosts were lovely people). The Edinburgh B&B was an interesting house, but there was no parking there, so had to park in a car park 20 mins walk away at extra costs (although this was the discounted rate offered by the B&B).

The Best Of Ireland Tour

The Best Of Ireland

The communication/paperwork could use a little fine tuning, but overall the value was definitely there. This tour brings you through absolutely spectacular areas of Ireland, with enough downtime to not feel too rushed. The hotels/food was nicer than we expected for the price.

The 30 best UK holidays for 2024

T ravel is truly back – predictions are that 2024 will break records for global tourism. So does that mean domestic holidays are dead? Nope. Abta’s latest report reveals 58 per cent of Britons are planning a UK trip in 2024.

The continuing demand for more sustainable, lower-carbon breaks is a contributing factor. But so is the fact that Britain offers so much.

For instance, this year should see the completion of the 2,700-mile King Charles III England Coast Path , the longest managed coast path in the world. This is also a year to celebrate National Landscapes , the new name given to the country’s 46 Areas of Outstanding National Beauty. Then there’s English wine, and wine tourism, which is booming – check out events such as Norwich Wine Week and new trips from Wine Tours of Kent . Or maybe use the National Gallery as your guide: to celebrate its 200th anniversary, the gallery is lending 12 headline works to 12 venues countrywide.

Whatever your interests, here’s a batch of British break ideas to inspire you to holiday on home soil this year.

Run wild in Argyll

Ecologists Katharine and David Lowrie, the owners of Auchgoyle Farm, were the first people in the world to run the length of South America. But don’t worry: their new wild-running weekenders aren’t so extreme. Some retreats are mixed, some are women-only, some are aimed at beginners; all include lovely guided runs around their rewilding estate and across the hills, beaches and woodlands of the Argyll coast. Gentle yoga, farm walks, tree planting and eco-friendly accommodation are included too.

Drink and ride in Shropshire

To mark the 30th anniversary of the legendary Ludlow Food Festival this year, why not experience the wider county’s bounty by bike? Shropshire company Wheely Wonderful Cycling has devised an easy-going route that visits an array of small breweries, food producers and even a vineyard, while showcasing plenty of pretty countryside. Stride the Salt Path in Devon & Cornwall

This year, a big-screen version of Raynor Winn’s South West Coast Path memoir, The Salt Path , is due to open in cinemas – shooting took place in Cornwall last summer. But don’t just watch the film; hit the trail yourself. Walkers’ Britain’s new trip from Westward Ho! to Padstow covers one of the 630-mile path’s most challenging but magnificent sections, undulating between scenic spots such as cliff-tumbling Clovelly, Tintagel Castle, picturesque Port Isaac and wild Hartland Point.

A touch of luxe

Ride the dragon in north wales.

Take a nostalgic steam-hauled journey along the most scenic tracks in Wales. Steam Dreams Rail Co’s new Welsh Dragon trip will trundle over Barmouth Bridge and along the Cambrian Coast, follow the North Wales route between Snowdonia and the sea, and plunge through the little-visited Marches on the Heart of Wales Line; journeys between Wales and the start/end in London are steam-pulled, too.

In response, Gallivant Camber Sands, a swish adults-only hotel in the heart of British wine country, has collaborated with Gusbourne Estate to offer exclusive quaffing for guests. Book a Discover English Wine stay for a self-guided Gusbourne tour and tasting. Lounge around in Lincolnshire

A top wellness trend for 2024 is boosting your energy in natural ways, and Laceby Manor Spa, on the edge of the Lincolnshire Wolds, is just the place. Opened in 2022, it’s been designed to bring the countryside in; there’s a natural swimming pond (perfect for wild swimming and cold-water therapy), an indoor-outdoor vitality pool and saunas infused with herbs from the garden. Or indulge in its speciality hammams, rituals and massages using hand-harvested seaweed.

Book it:  Laceby Manor Spa (01472 873468; lacebymanor.co.uk ) offers a Two Night Weekend Escape from £249pp/per night including full-board accommodation, spa access and two treatments per person.

Live the high life in Suffolk

For some, the cost of living isn’t a crisis: 2023 became the year of the Six Figure Family Holiday , with high-net-worth individuals spending big. For a taste of that high life, rent 17th-century state-of-the-art Orpheus manor (where, incidentally, Gordon Brown held a cabinet meeting during the 2008 financial crisis that effectively saved the banking system). Follow the mile-long driveway to discover, among other things, a heated outdoor pool, a high-spec Dolby Atmos cinema, the same bathtubs you’d find in Buckingham Palace and general rococo-meets-Hollywood flair.

Book it:  Unique Homestays (01637 881183; uniquehomestays.com ) offers seven nights at Orpheus from £9,995, sleeping 14. Plan the perfect holiday in Suffolk with our guide .

Drink a dram or two in Argyll & the Isles

Did you know we’re almost through Whisky Year Zero (July 2023-June 2024), the 200th anniversary of the 1823 Excise Act, which shaped Scotland’s “Whisky Coast”? To celebrate, Tartan Road has devised a new luxe tour. You’ll be driven around the most exciting distilleries in Campbeltown, Islay and beyond, and given VIP tours, tutored tastings and the chance to blend your own bottle. You’ll also explore the dramatic landscapes and spirited communities from which whisky comes.

Book it:  Tartan Road (01631 402066; tartanroad.co.uk ) offers an eight-day Ultimate Whisky Tour from £6,500pp including B&B accommodation, chauffeur-guide and tours.

Family adventures

Sleep back in time in lancashire.

This year, swap screen-gazing for stargazing, plus an immersive history lesson, by staying at Bowland Escapes Roundhouse. This faithful replica of an Iron Age dwelling sits within a family-owned park in the heart of the Forest of Bowland, an official Dark Sky Discovery site. Families can explore the National Landscape’s woodland and riverbanks, walk the Ribble Valley Sculpture Trail, cook over the firepit and stare up at the sparkling stars, and then huddle together under the roundhouse’s ancient-feeling – and definitely Wi-Fi-free – thatch.

Book it:  Bowland Escapes Roundhouse ( hostunusual.com ) costs from £60 per night, sleeping two adults and three children.

Go under-age off-roading in Hertfordshire

The Grove is great for families. During the school holidays, this five-star country retreat near London offers a smorgasbord of kids’ stuff, from hawking, archery, axe throwing and arts and crafts to a kids’ club, video game wagon, soft play centre, fun pool and free afternoon sweet trolley. Plus, new for 2024, children can head out on woodland trails in miniature 4×4s for their own off-roading adventures.

Book it:  The Grove (01923 807807; thegrove.co.uk ) has B&B rooms from £289 per night as part of its three-nights-for-two Holiday Escape deal, valid during Easter; junior 4×4 £40.

Cavort with kings in Leicestershire

This year’s a biggie for Richard III, despite having been dead since 1485. A new (free) King’s Walking Trail has launched in Leicester, plus it’s the 10th anniversary of the city’s Richard III Visitor Centre and the 50th of Bosworth Battlefield Heritage Centre. These two sites – among others such as Twycross Zoo and Conkers – are included in the region’s excellent-value Stay Play Explore holidays, which package accommodation and attractions for one low cost; better yet, the price has been frozen for 2024.

Book it:  Stay Play Explore ( stayplayexplore.co.uk ) offers a one-night Leicestershire Family Fun break from £169 for four including B&B accommodation and three attractions.

Bunk up in Powys

Last year saw a rise in both group and multigenerational holidays – a trend for bonding breaks that shows no sign of abating. So grab everyone and book into Wye Valley Bunkhouse. This five-star (but affordable) converted chapel can squeeze in up to 18 – and is built for family fun. It has a huge television, games room with table tennis and pool table, and a tube slide for getting from the top floor to the bottom. Plus Wye Valley Canoes is based on site, making it easy to hire boats for river exploration.

Book it:  Wye Valley Bunkhouse (07515 905 419; groupaccommodation.com ) costs from £3,450 per week, sleeping 18 (£27pp/per night).

Mini-adventures

Conquer the fells in the lake district.

New year, new challenge? HF Holidays has launched a collection of challenge hikes for 2024. Mostly doable in a long weekend, they require a little more effort than your average countryside stroll but deliver a lot of satisfaction. For instance, scale Scafell. Meet like-minded walkers over a cream tea at HF’s Derwent Bank country house, take a warm-up walk to Cat Bells, then tackle the roof of England. It’s a good option for solos: there’s no extra charge for a single room.

Book it:  HF Holidays (020 3974 8865; hfholidays.co.uk ) offers a three-night small-group Scafell Pike Challenge from £475pp including full-board accommodation; May 3, Sept 13. Plan the perfect holiday in the Lake District with our guide .

Pack in a pilgrimage in Northumberland

Pilgrimages are popular. But not everyone has time for a month-long Camino. Instead, consider Macs Adventure’s taster of St Cuthbert’s Way which, though only three walking days, packs a historic punch. From Wooler, follow in ancient footsteps, pausing at Cuthbert’s Cave (where the saint’s body was once hidden) and crossing to the tidal island of Lindisfarne, where he became abbot; explore Holy Island’s priory ruins and stay overnight to explore after the day-trippers have gone.

Book it:  Macs Adventure (0141 530 5452; macsadventure.com ) offers a four-night Highlights of the St Cuthbert’s Way trip from £545pp including B&B accommodation. Plan the perfect holiday in Northumberland with our guide.

Camp wild in Norfolk

Launching in spring 2024, the East Anglia 350 driving route will reveal the wild beauty of Norfolk and Suffolk, from Brecklands to the Broads. But to make the 350-mile road trip even more immersive in nature, do it with Wild With Consent. The off-grid experts have teamed up with EA350 to create self-drive 4×4 experiences, wild camping included. Behind the wheel of a fully equipped Land Rover Defender (complete with roof tent), make your way through villages, beaches and bird reserves, before parking up – legally – in the middle of nowhere each night.

Book it:  Wild With Consent ( wildwithconsent.com ) offers a two-night Norfolk Off-Grid self-drive from £695 including 4×4 hire. Plan the perfect holiday in Norfolk with our guide .

Pedal pushers in Southern Scotland

Opened in 2023, the Kirkpatrick Coast to Coast – a 250-mile route named after the local blacksmith who invented the first pedal-assisted bicycle – is Scotland’s newest cycle route. It runs from Stranraer to Eyemouth via sandy beaches, Wigtown (Scotland’s National Book Town), hills and forests, Victorian viaducts, ruined abbeys, the river Tweed and a smidgen of Northumberland. For a bit of support along the way, join Saddle Skedaddle’s new guided ride – the width of a whole country packed into just four diverse cycling days.

Book it:  Saddle Skedaddle (0191 265 1110; skedaddle.com ) offers a five-night Kirkpatrick Coast to Coast cycle from £1,175pp including half-board accommodation; April 21, September 15.

Back to nature

Go on stay-fari in dorset.

No need to swan off abroad on safari this year. Enjoy a magnificent menagerie in south-west England in the company of top-notch guides. Wildlife Worldwide’s week in Dorset with nature buffs Mike Dilger and Ed Drewitt (both seen on the BBC) will explore some of Britain’s most biodiverse sites. Sightings may include great bustards on Salisbury Plain, osprey and white-tailed eagles on the Wareham Channel and red squirrels on Brownsea Island.

Book it:  Wildlife Worldwide (01962 302086; wildlifeworldwide.com ) offers an eight-day small-group South Coast Wildlife Extravaganza from £2,995pp including accommodation, most meals and guided activities; departs May 10.

Down on the farm in Ceredigion

Looking for a sustainable stay in 2024? Choose Denmark Farm, a conservation centre near Lampeter that is at the forefront of efforts to revitalise the country’s farmed countryside. There’s a lovely eco-lodge (sustainably sourced timber, sheep’s wool insulation), an eco-campsite with composting loos and woodland kitchen, plus bird hides, biodiverse ponds and nature trails. It also runs a range of back-to-nature courses, featuring everything from ethnobotany and willow weaving to fermenting and tree identification.

Book it:  Denmark Farm (01570 493358; denmarkfarm.org.uk ) has tent pitches from £14 per adult/£8 per child; eco-lodge apartments, sleeping four, cost from £90pp. See online calendar for courses and prices.

Write your way in East Sussex

The three luxe cabins at Starcroft Farm, hidden in the High Weald, are a good choice for creative types. Each one has two writing desks, bulging bookshelves and thought-provoking art and curios you can use as writing prompts. But if your novel needs a real kickstart, book one of Starcroft’s Writing Retreats. As well as an inspiring natural environment, you get a one-to-one with a writing coach, head-clearing woodland walks, writing goodies and vital cake breaks.

Book it:  Starcroft Farm (0780 884 1313; starcroftfarm.co.uk ) offers five-day Writing Retreats from £560pp including self-catering accommodation and coaching session; March 18, June 10, September 23.

Planting ideas in Cairngorms

When Sir David Attenborough starts extolling the benefits of plant-based diets – as he did on Planet Earth III – nature buffs should take note. So consider signing up for Naturetrek’s new Summer in the Cairngorms Vegetarian/Vegan tour. While the focus will be on seeking special species, from rare orchids to dragonflies and crossbills, it will be based at a hotel specialising in vegan cuisine, and includes delicious meat-free breakfasts, picnics and three-course dinners.

Book it:  Naturetrek (01962 733051; naturetrek.co.uk ) offers a five-day small-group Summer in the Cairngorms trip from £1,495pp including full-board vegetarian/vegan accommodation; June 23. Plan the perfect holiday in the Cairngorms with our guide.

Rewild in style in Devon

Cove Valley, a 300-acre rewilding project on the edge of Exmoor, is home to a wealth of species: red deer, badgers, beavers, hares and more than 50 species of birds. It’s also home to three luxurious, nature-immersed cabins. Opened in summer 2023, these beautiful boltholes are designed to encourage alfresco living: as well as indoor facilities, there are kitchens and wood-fired tubs outside. Enjoy the views, then pack the picnic basket to stroll the estate – trails lead via streams, lakes and feeding stations, where you might spot the wild residents.

Book it: Cove Valley ( covevalley.co.uk ) has self-catering cabins from £250pp, sleeping two.

Is it safe to go on holiday to Cyprus? - UK Foreign Office's latest advice to all tourists

The British government's advice for travel to Cyprus includes warnings relating to political demonstrations, crime and safety

  • 04:31, 26 APR 2024

Photo shows a Cyprus beach

With unspoiled beaches, crystal-clear sea and temperatures pushing 30°C in the summer, it's no wonder that Cyprus is such a popular destination with British tourists. However, ongoing conflicts in the Middle East have caused uncertainty for holidaymakers looking to visit the Mediterranean island, given its close proximity.

Cyprus is generally considered to be a safe holiday destination, but the British government's advice for travellers does include some warnings relating to political demonstrations, crime and safety. The UK Foreign Office last updated its guidance on travel to Cyprus in February.

If you've got a holiday booked to Cyprus or are thinking of booking one, see below for the latest travel advice.

What is the British government's advice about travelling to Cyprus?

The latest travel advice from the UK Foreign Office does not advise against travel to Cyprus, so it can be considered generally safe to visit. However, the government does warn that protests can happen with little warning in cities.

The Foreign Office states: "Events in the Middle East have led to heightened tensions and demonstrations are likely. Avoid any protests, political gatherings, or marches and leave the area if one develops. Local transport routes may be disrupted."

Has Cyprus been affected by the Middle East crisis?

Cyprus has not been directly affected by ongoing crisis between Israel and Hamas, however the island is home to a significant Israeli population and tensions have risen since the conflict. Local press in Cyprus reports that security measures around the island have increased in recent months.

What are Cyprus' entry requirements?

Cyprus is part of the EU, which means it has similar entry requirements to Spain and Greece. British citizens must ensure that their passport is less than ten years old and has at least three months before it expires from the day you intend to leave the country.

UK tourists do not need a visa to visit Cyprus on holiday if they're staying for less than 90 days for the purpose of tourism, visiting friends or family, attending business meetings, cultural or sports events or for short-term studies or training.

Cyprus is not part of the Schengen area, so the time you spend there will not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit in the Schengen zone. British citizens should remember to get their passport stamped when they enter and leave Cyprus as border guards use the stamps to check you haven't overstayed.

Holidaymakers may also be asked to show a return or onward ticket on arrival in Cyprus and can be asked to prove they have enough money for the duration of their stay.

Local rules affecting UK tourists

There are a number of laws and customs in Cyprus that UK tourists should be aware of. Firstly, Cyprus has strict rules regarding the goods that can be brought in and taken out of the country.

Travellers must declare anything that is subject to tax or duty and you cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into the country. There are some exceptions such as powdered baby milk, baby food and special foods required for medical reasons.

Crime against tourists is not common in Cyprus, but the UK Foreign Office urges visitors to 'take sensible precautions'. Personal attacks, including sexual assaults and drink spiking, are infrequent, but holidaymakers should still buy their own drinks and keep sight of them at all times and avoid splitting up from friends.

Cyprus has a strictly-enforced zero-tolerance policy towards illegal drugs, which includes laughing gas. Anyone caught with drugs can be fined or imprisoned.

Same-sex relationships are legal in Cyprus and civil partnerships are recognised, however, they may not be as widely accepted as in the UK. Same-sex relationships are legal in the north of Cyprus, but are not widely accepted.

Travellers should avoid taking photographs near sensitive areas like military buildings as you can be arrested for doing so and should be cautious of strong waves and currents when swimming in the sea. Always follow warning signs and only swim on approved beaches.

Planning your next trip abroad? Travel Republic has deals on package holidays to a range of top destinations including Cyprus from £296pp. If you're after some new luggage for your upcoming break, luxury suitcase brand Antler has slashed the price of its popular Logo Cabin Bag from £160 to £96.

These are the ferries to avoid this summer

As a new report reveals the best and worst routes from the uk, here’s our guide to making your next trip plain sailing.

St Malo is one of Brittany Ferries’ top-rated routes

A holiday by ferry can be a wonderful thing, replacing the hassle and guilt of flying with the freedom of no-weight-limit packing (“just throw it in!”), the chance to keep the family together — Fido can come too, as can the bikes and paddleboards — and a supermarket sweep of cheese and wine on the way back.

However, ferry travel isn’t always plain sailing — post-Brexit rules and port staff strikes have played their part in long queues and missed departures. And from October, if it’s not postponed again, the UK will become subject to the Entry/Exit System, which will require every passenger to be fingerprinted and to have their facial biometrics scanned. Delays are expected.

However, while the port queue may be a great leveller, all ferries are not created equal, as underlined by a new report from the consumer group Which?, revealing the best and worst ferry companies to France, Ireland and the rest of Europe.

Journeys on the Dover to Calais route in particular have been plagued by high demand, strikes, poor weather and slow processing times, with waits of up to 17 hours reported by travellers in April. These are not necessarily the fault of the ferry companies, but according to the Which? Travel survey of UK passengers, the route is one of the poorest.

Dover-Calais services attracted the lowest scores in the survey, regardless of operator. Irish Ferries, P&O Ferries and DFDS all received just two stars for food and drink quality and lavatory facilities on the route. Better-rated services between the UK and France included those to Dunkirk, St Malo and Roscoff.

Brittany Ferries came out on top for its England-France services, with its Plymouth-Roscoff and Portsmouth-St Malo routes receiving the best consumer scores in total, 88 per cent and 80 per cent respectively. DFDS was rated best for Dover to Calais crossings, with an overall score of 69 per cent.

Brittany Ferries’ MV Bretagne on the Portsmouth to St Malo route

However, the report recommends avoiding Calais altogether for a Dover-Dunkirk ferry, which often costs the same and deposits you just 30 minutes’ drive east along the French coast from the busier port. “Sailings are 30 minutes longer, but Dunkirk port is much quieter, and passengers reported boats with more space on board and better quality facilities,” Rory Boland, the editor of Which? Travel, said.

For trips to the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland, Stena Line racked up the highest scores. The same operator’s Harwich-Hook of Holland route also beat Netherlands routes from P&O Ferries, with an 85 per cent score, including five-star ratings for customer service, cabins and lavatories. Meanwhile, Irish Ferries scored top for the Pembroke to Rosslare route, with a 70 per cent consumer score.

• 40 best no-fly holidays for an eco-friendly getaway • 10 of the best no-fly cruises

The lowest scorers for UK-France routes were P&O Ferries and Irish Ferries, with a 55 per cent and 54 per cent score respectively. P&O Ferries was rated Best to Avoid, with the report referencing the company’s controversial mass sackings in 2022, as well as poor survey scores for facilities, food, drink and lavatories.

The survey of Which? members gathered ratings and reviews for nearly 2,000 ferry passenger experiences over the past three years, with consumers rating operators on customer service, the booking process, food and drink, lavatories and value for money.

One P&O Ferries customer who travelled to Calais told Which?: “I couldn’t believe how poor P&O Ferries are now compared with a few years ago. The staff are poor and the food was dreadful. A plate of fish and chips looked as if it had done several crossings.”

Onions from Roscoff

The report also drew attention to operational problems with ferry routes that island-dwellers rely on for regular transport. The Isle of Man Steam Packet line between Heysham in Lancashire and the island’s capital, Douglas, only managed a 56 per cent score, with only two stars for facilities. “Long-suffering islanders complain about poor facilities, too many cancellations and ‘sky-rocketing prices’,” the report said. Meanwhile, railing against frequent cancellations by CalMac, the Hebrides ferry operator, one passenger said: “Making a booking is like hitting a gambling button and hoping for the best.”

Boland said: “Taking a ferry should be a simple and relaxing way to travel, but all too often we’ve heard from passengers dismayed by long delays, dirty boats and a lacklustre food offering after sailing with the worst-rated operators.

“Unsurprisingly, given the regular disruption to sailings between Dover and Calais, all providers on the UK’s most popular ferry route were rated poorly.

“If you can, sail with Brittany Ferries, whose Plymouth to Roscoff route is unmatched for journeys to France.”

Three holidays by ferry on the best-rated routes:

1. beach gîte near roscoff, france.

Roscoff harbour

Supervised by lifeguards in season, Pouldu beach is a long, little-developed sweep of dune-backed pale sand in Brittany’s Finistère department. Couples can stay just ten minutes’ walk away in a bright, open-plan apartment with sea views. The elegant nearby town of St-Pol-de-Léon holds a good farmers’ market on Tuesdays, while attractive Roscoff — only four miles away, and served by Brittany Ferries from Plymouth — is famed for crêpes, seafood soups (best paired with local ciders) and thalassotherapy spas. Details Seven nights’ self-catering for two from £864, including return ferry travel for two with a car (brittany-ferries.co.uk)

2. Le Touquet, northern France

Waterfront of Le Touquet

Known for its silvery sand dunes and extensive cycling paths, Le Touquet is a chic little seaside town stacked with cheesemongers, patisseries and a historic food market. It’s less than an hour’s drive from Calais, where you’ll arrive on your top-rated DFDS ferry service (or take Which?’s tip and travel to Dunkirk, adding 30 minutes to the drive). You’ll stay at the chic, self-catering La Parenthèse Touquettoise apartment, a short stroll from the town’s beach, with a balcony, kitchenette and close proximity to restaurants for just-caught seafood. Details Five nights’ self-catering for two from £427pp, including return ferry travel for two with a car (dfds.com)

3. Netherlands self-drive tour

Windmills in Rotterdam

For a whistle-stop tour around the land of tulips, clogs and international justice, try this self-guided week in the Netherlands. You’ll take Stena Line’s passenger-approved ferry from Harwich to the Hook of Holland, then stop in Rotterdam, Amsterdam and the Hague and stay in three and four-star hotels. Amsterdam’s charms go without saying, but Rotterdam is increasingly loved by city-breakers for its modern architecture, cutting-edge museums and docklands warehouses turned food venues. Details Seven nights’ room only from £520pp, including return ferry travel for two with a car (sembo.co.uk)

You’ll pass through cliff top habitats and have six viewpoints overlooking the North Sea and 400ft cliffs. The nature trail is half a mile long and takes you through the scrub and grassland habitats of the reserve, and includes great opportunities to spot the smaller birds.
