Journey Mode

  • View history

PC version

Journey Mode can be selected upon creation of new characters and worlds . It allows the player a wide array of customization options during gameplay, including duplication of items, modification of time and weather, and difficulty sliders. Journey mode is only accessible with Journey characters in Journey worlds (Journey worlds can only be accessed using Journey characters, and Journey characters can only play in Journey worlds).

Journey Mode is intended to be Terraria's "creative" or "tourist" mode, making it relatively easy to acquire items and explore Terraria's various elements and mechanics without having to overcome its normal progression of challenges; though Journey players do have the ability to adjust the game's difficulty on-the-fly to challenge themselves and test different difficulty levels.

  • Characters begin with upgraded versions of the usual equipment, as well as extra equipment not normally given to new characters, including Fledgling Wings .

Iron Shortsword

  • Enemies are half as difficult by default, and their difficulty can be changed during gameplay using the Enemy Difficulty Slider .
  • Journey Mode offers players access to the Power Menu , which is used to adjust the game experience.

Power Menu [ ]

Power Menu

The Power Menu can be accessed via the toggle button located under the main inventory slots, above the crafting menu. Its interface replaces the crafting menu when opened.

The Power Menu contains seven different functions: Duplication, Research, Time, Weather, Personal Power Menu, Infection Spread, and Enemy Difficulty.

Duplication [ ]

Duplication Menu

Duplication Menu

This menu allows the player to instantly duplicate any previously researched item indefinitely. The menu has eleven tabs, each for a different item category ( Weapons , Armor , Vanity , Blocks , Furniture , Accessories , Equipment, Consumables , Tools , Materials , Miscellaneous). Clicking a category tab shows only items of that type; clicking the same category tab again deselects it.

The search bar lets players search for specific items. When searching for an item, if a category tab is open, it will only search through items in that category. The search bar also has a button at the end of it to clear any text inside it.

Research [ ]

Research Menu Box

Research Box

To duplicate an item, it must first be "researched" a certain number of times, which destroys the item in the process. Highlighting an item in the inventory, or placing it into the empty space in the Research Menu, displays a counter of how many more of that item will be required to complete its research. Research counters are tied to characters, meaning that new characters will have to research items again.

The total number of researched items required varies by the item type:

Complete list [ ]

There are three options available within the Time Menu:

Power Menu Time Frozen

  • Fallen Stars will not fall while time is frozen.

Power Menu Time Dawn

  • Alternating between day and night will count as random chances for bosses and events to spawn, if their conditions are met, and will reset the fishing quest as if a day had passed.
  • Some Events can be extended indefinitely by repeatedly setting time back a step or freezing time.

Power Menu Time Speed Slider

Weather [ ]

The Weather Menu grants the player full control over the current weather:

Power Menu Wind Control Slider

Personal Power Menu [ ]

The Personal Power Menu includes three options related to the player:

Power Menu Godmode

  • Debuffs are still inflicted as normal, but the player takes no damage from them.
  • Mana is not actually unlimited; it instead regenerates at a much faster rate than the player can use it, making it seem that it is unlimited.

Power Menu Increased Placement Range

Infection Spread [ ]

A toggle that can stop the spread of Corruption , Crimson , and Hallow . It does not, however, reset them to their original biome.

Enemy Difficulty Slider [ ]

A slider that sets difficulty anywhere from 0.5× to 3× the normal difficulty. 0.5× equates to the default Journey Mode difficulty, moving up through Classic Mode at 1×, Expert Mode at 2×, and Master Mode at 3×. Moving the slider enables all rewards obtainable in the chosen difficulty, including Expert-mode exclusive items and Master-mode exclusive items .

  • All achievements can be unlocked in Journey Mode as normal.
  • However, you can still give the items random modifiers using the Goblin Tinkerer .
  • In the duplication menu, any text in an item's description can be searched, not just its name.
  • Items that show at different times of year such as Goodie Bags can be researched.
  • This does not affect some items, like converting a Marshmallow on a Stick to a Cooked Marshmallow .
  • When time is frozen, Music Boxes can still record songs.
  • Rain and Wind changes. A world with wind change or rain change disabled will keep that part of its weather frozen as-is forever, allowing for a world with endless clear skies and breezy days, or a permanent thunderstorm.
  • Time alterations, including the freezing or acceleration of time. This, however, can make it very difficult to progress in the game normally due to the game's numerous time-based events and bosses .
  • Biome Spread. This can be very useful for those who wish to play in a normal world without the stress of maintaining purity , or to keep an accelerated world from being ravaged by its infectious biomes.
  • Difficulty and spawn rate changes do not persist into normal gameplay, but will be remembered if the world is converted back into journey mode.
  • Weapons that require more mana per shot than the player currently has in total cannot be used, such as the Nebula Arcanum when the player is at the default amount of 20 mana.
  • If the enemy spawn rate is at 0×, the Dungeon Guardian will not spawn. However, mining Tombstones can still cause Ghosts to spawn; critters can still spawn from destroyed plants and shaken trees ; Bees or Antlion Larvae still spawn from broken Bee Hives or Antlion Eggs .
  • Switching difficulty modes causes enemies and bosses to change their AI and dropped items immediately.
  • The duration of debuffs is unchanged when switching difficulties.
  • Changing to Expert Mode will activate the extra 6th accessory slot (after consuming the Demon Heart from the Wall of Flesh ), and changing to Master Mode will activate Master Mode's extra accessory slot (i.e. the 7th slot after consuming the Demon Heart), due to Master Mode defaulting to 6 accessory slots from the start of a new character .
  • While enemy stats at 1×, 2×, or 3× difficulty value are the same as those in their corresponding difficulty, stats between these set values have a linear increase. This has caused some strange stat issues, for example, enemy stats at 1.95×, 2.95× difficulty are significantly higher than those at 2×, 3×, respectively.
  • The damage dealt by town NPCs remains unchanged when switching difficulties. It is always set to double the Classic Mode damage.
  • The difficulty slider does not affect the coins earned in Expert and Master , so the coins received will be 2.5 times less than in Expert and Master settings (1.75 in For the worthy seeds). But since coins can be duplicated like any item, the player has unlimited funds to begin with making this an interesting quirk, but irrelevant.
  • Shimmer uncrafting allows you to severely cut down the cost of researching items, making it cost less to research items.
  • An enemy's stats are determined by the difficulty upon spawn, whereas its dropped items are determined by the difficulty upon defeat. This allows obtaining Expert- or Master-exclusive items from e.g. a Journey-level boss , by increasing the difficulty just before its defeat.
  • While the increased placement range is enabled, the player can hold Torches and use the Smart Cursor mechanic while in a cave to light up many nearby caves surprisingly efficiently.
  • However, note that freezing time when the merchant spawns is important due to how fast time will pass, and the merchant might even despawn before the player has a chance to run over.
  • If you have any filters selected, certain items won't show up in the duplication menu when researched. To make them show up, remove currently selected filters, and search the wanted item.
  • If you treat the duplication menu as an extension of your inventory, you can all but eliminate the need to worry about storage space. If your inventory is full, anything you don't immediately need can be researched to make room without it going to waste. If an item is already fully researched, you can simply trash it and duplicate more whenever you need it. Items like weapons and accessories only need one to be fully researched, so unless it has a modifier you want to keep, you can "store" it by researching it and always have it available.
  • Coins only require 100 to be fully researched regardless of the denomination. This means a single silver coin can be turned into unlimited platinum coins by changing it into copper coins, researching those, duplicating stacks of copper coins to craft into 100 silver coins, and so on until you've researched 100 platinum. But since coins are only duplicated in stacks of 99, you will need to individually pull out 102 stacks of coins for each step, so it's generally more efficient to duplicate items and sell them for money initially.
  • Journey Mode is known as Creative in some places of Terraria's source code, referring to the Creative mode in the 3D sandbox game Minecraft .
  • Journey Mode's descriptive text, "With great power comes great responsibility" , is a quote from the 2002 American superhero movie Spider-Man . Similar words have been used towards government dating back to at least 1793, with perhaps one of the most famous quotes coming from Winston Churchill in 1906, who said, "Where there is great power there is great responsibility."
  • Quest items are the only non-stackable items that require two items to research, while the Marshmallow on a Stick is the only non-stackable item that requires 10 items to research.
  • The Godmode icon is a reference to the classic video game series Doom , which have a similar God Mode icon.
  • The Power Menu toggle button displays a bunny wearing a hard hat, whose name is "Benny the Construction Bunny". [1]
  • Boss fights can be a little harder in 2.95× Expert difficulty than in 3.00× Master difficulty. This could be due to lacking one accessory slot while max life of bosses is usually 15.7% higher. Enemy attack damage is 1.67% lower than Master, which could be simply ignored; almost all attack patterns remain unchanged between Expert difficulty and Master difficulty.

Terraria: What Is Journey Mode?

Journey mode acts much like Minecraft's creative mode aside for a few chief differences.

After a whole decade of updates and additional content, Terraria   developer Re-Logic has released Journey's End. The developers say this last major content update brings  Terraria  to completion.

Journey's End introduced loads of new content and additional game modes. One of those additions being Journey mode, which acts much like  Minecraft 's creative mode aside for a few chief differences.

RELATED:  Terraria Journey's End Update Offers Fans Final Goodbye After Nine Years

Terraria's Journey mode is notably easier than its other game modes, giving players more control and creative reign. For starters, players can tailor the difficulty and various elements to their liking. They can also spawn any previously researched item.

Creative Tools and Controls

Journey mode starts players off with a full set of tools, including an Iron Shortsword, Axe, Pick Axe, and Hammer. Also provided is a Finch staff, 100 Torches, and 100 pieces of rope. These items significantly enhance the early progress of mining materials and creating objects. Players are also automatically equipped with Fledgeling Wings, cushioning fall damage, and allowing them to jump higher.

Two defining features are research and duplication. Researching a certain amount of a resource is required before duplication of said item is permitted. For instance, players must acquire 100 pieces of wood before they're able to duplicate the wood. Players may duplicate any item they've owned, given they have researched the required resource enough and now have access to infinite supply.

Complete Elemental Control

Journey mode increases the range at which blocks can be placed or destroyed and grants complete control over time. Players may set the time to dawn, noon, dusk, or night and freeze time completely. Freezing time only applies to the time of day. Movement and enemy attacks won't be inhibited.

Furthermore, players control the weather in Journey mode, scaling rainfall from no precipitation all the way to inciting a monsoon. Wind speed and direction are also bendable to the player's will, as is the spread of Corruption, Crimson, and Hallow.

God mode is another togglable feature of Journey mode. When active, it negates all damage and knockback from enemies, allows players to breathe underwater indefinitely, and enables magic to be cast without mana.

Enemy Controls

Journey mode enables players to scale both the number and difficulty of enemy spawns. The number of spawns may be adjusted as low as 0.10X the regular amount all the way up to 10X the magnitude. The enemy difficulty is set to half that of normal mode by default. However, players may scale the challenge up to Master mode, which is 3X what they would face usually.

Journey Mode allows a great customizable experience and swift game advancement. Utilizing its features, especially research and duplication, will quickly override Terraria's typical progression, reducing day or week-long projects down to mere hours.

Though Journey mode makes for easier gameplay, it's not necessarily recommended for newcomers. Beginners can rapidly advance without learning the game's fundamentals and become overwhelmed. Therefore, novices should devote some time to learning the ropes in normal mode before getting too creative with Journey mode.

Terraria: What Is The Journey Game Mode?

Terraria's Journey game mode gives players creative free rein over their domain.

Even a decade after its release, Terraria remains one of the most popular sandbox games available on Steam , with over 100,000 players reported to still play it daily. It still gets frequent content updates that add bonus content to the game, like new vanity items and game modes that keep the gameplay fresh and exciting.

The beauty of non-linear games like Terraria is that players can take the gameplay at their own pace, with several game modes on offer to vary the gameplay. Terraria's Journey game mode, added in the Journey's End update, gives players creative free rein over their domain, as they can tailor the difficulty to their liking.

What Is The Journey Game Mode In Terraria?

The Journey mode in Terraria could be likened to the legendary "Creative" setting in Minecraft , both allow the player to acquire items easier than in normal gameplay. Terraria 's Journey mode is slightly different, giving the player individual customization options through the Power Menu to optimize their gameplay to suit them. They can perform several "administrative functions," like modifying the time and weather or duplicating items they have acquired.

Only Journey characters can be used on Journey worlds, and normal-mode characters cannot be transferred to Journey worlds. Upon the world's creation, Journey players will spawn with a beginner's set of equipment, including an Iron Shortsword, Iron Pickaxe, Iron Axe, Iron Hammer, Finch Staff, 100 Torches, 100 Rope, a Magic Mirror, a Grappling Hook and Fledging Wings. All regular achievements can still be earned while in Journey mode , so players can sit back, relax, and take the game at their own speed!

The Power Menu In Terraria's Journey Mode

As mentioned, the Power Menu is a difficulty-toggling system in Journey mode. It has seven main functions: Duplication, Research, Enemy Difficulty, Time, Weather, Infection Spread and the Personal Power Menu. These functions and a brief explanation of them will be included below.

RELATED: Terraria: How To Get All Town Slimes

Duplication

Duplication allows the player to duplicate any item they have previously researched instantaneously with no limits or required crafting materials. All researched items are organized into categories, e.g. Armor, Tools, Materials. The search bar allows players to search for specific items.

Unlike Minecraft 's Creative mode, where players can use the menu to infinitely create any item in Minecraft' s directory, Terraria players must first find and "research" an item several times before they can duplicate it. This destroys the object in the process. Placing items into the Research Menu displays how much more research is required before the process is completed. For example, weapons and tools only need to be researched once, while ores require 100 times.

RELATED: Terraria: All Crafting Stations & Where To Get Them

Enemy Difficulty

Enemies in Journey mode are already half their difficulty. The Power Menu can lower this even further, or be adjusted to the player's preference. This works as a slider that can set the difficulty from 0.5x to 3x, with the latter reflecting the challenging combat seen in Master mode. Doing so also enables the rewards that can be obtainable in Master Mode, so players can test this to their detriment.

The Time menu is self-explanatory and has three options available:

  • The option to freeze time completely. During this time, no Fallen Stars will spawn.
  • Set time to one of four presets Dawn, Noon, Dusk, and Midnight. This can trigger certain events or bosses or reset Angler quests.
  • Alter the passage of time from 1x to 24x its usual rate.

RELATED: Terraria: How To Get Rod Of Discord

The Weather menu grants the player godly control over the weather and climates in their Terraria world.

  • There's a slider for wind speed and direction, which is beneficial for fishing.
  • There's also a slider for general weather and to reduce the volume of rainfall. The weather can be changed to clear skies or a monsoon.

Infection Spread

As it suggests, the Infection Spread toggle slows down or stops the spread of infectious biomes like the Hallow, Crimson, and Corruption. It does not remove these biomes from the world, though. The only method of cleansing biomes is through the Clentaminator equipped with the Green Solution.

Personal Power Menu

The Personal Power Menu is where the magic happens, giving players three main options to work with

  • Godmode allows the player to be impervious to all damage and knockback, so they cannot die. Debuffs can still be applied, but the player will take no damage. Players also gain unlimited breath underwater and mana that regenerates rapidly.
  • Increases the placement range for all tiles, making building faster and more efficient.
  • The enemy spawn rate can be altered to suit the player. The slider ranges from 0x (which disables all spawn rates, including critters) to the regular rates.

Terraria is available to play on PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PS4, iOS and Android devices.

Terraria: new journey mode explained (update 1.4).

With Terraria's Journey's End update there are several new things for players to check out. This guide will help players make sense of Journey Mode.

After almost a decade since it released, Terraria has finally received its last major content update called Journey's End . Developers Re-Logic has stated that this update completes Terarria , and there are a lot of new features for players to experiment with. With Journey's End, there are tons of new things for players to discover and new game modes to have fun with.

Related: Terraria: Journey's End Patch Notes Are Massive & Impressive

One of the new game modes that have been introduced in Terraria is Journey Mode. This mode is very similar to a creative mode in Minecraft , with a few key twists and differences. Players will be able to spawn any item they want into the game as long as they have researched that item first. This game mode is also much easier than others, but players will have access to several different methods of tailoring the game to their skill level. This guide will help players make sense of the new Journey Mode.

Terraria Journey Mode: Starting Gear

Unlike other game modes in Terraria , players will actually begin Journey Mode with several items that make the early moments of the game much easier. Players will be provided with an Iron Shortsword, an Iron Pickaxe, an Iron Axe, an Iron Hammer, a Finch Staff, 100 Torches, and 100 Rope. They will also start the game with a pair of Fledgling Wings equipped. These items will make it to where players can collect materials and craft some essential early game objects much faster than in a standard game. The Fledgling Wings will also let players jump higher, and help negate fall damage.

Terraria Journey Mode: Research and Duplication

Research and Duplication are probably the defining characteristics of Terraria's Journey Mode. In Journey Mode, players will be able to duplicate any item that they have owned and have infinite amounts of that resource. Players will first need to research the item before being able to duplicate it. Each item will have differing amounts that must be researched before being duplicated. For example, players will need to research 100 pieces of Wood or 100 pieces of Iron Ore before duplicating them.

Terraria Journey Mode: Player Abilities

There are also many different ways to adjust the world around the player and their own abilities while playing in this mode as well. For one, players have complete control over time and the weather. There is the ability to select from dawn, noon, dusk, and midnight as well as freeze time at any point. Freezing time still allows enemies and NPCs to move around and attack, it just ensures that time does not move forward any further. The player has complete control over rain, which moves on a slider from clear sky to monsoon and they can even adjust the speed and direction of the wind. Additionally, there is an option to turn off the spread of Corruption, Crimson, or Hallow.

There are two different features that affect the player's abilities in-game. At any point in time, the player can turn God Mode on or off. This will stop them from taking any damage or knockback from enemy attacks. With this on players will be able to survive underwater indefinitely and use magic attacks without spending mana points. The player can also increase the range at which they can place and destroy blocks. This is turned on automatically once Journey Mode is started.

Terraria Journey Mode: Enemy Sliders

There are two different sliders in Journey Mode that will change the way that enemies behave and spawn in Terraria . For one, players can decide how many enemies spawn in their world. There is the ability to change enemy spawn rates from the normal to 10x the normal rate, but the spawn rate can also be set to .10x. Enemy difficulty can also be adjusted considerably. Journey Mode starts out with .5x the normal difficulty but players can adjust the difficult all the way up to Master Mode at 3x.

Terraria Journey Mode: Things to Keep in Mind

Journey Mode is mostly for players who want a more tailored experience, or those that want to play through the game more quickly. Players who mess around with the research and duplication mechanics will quickly find that it breaks progression in Terraria considerably. This is a lot of fun since the player can accomplish things that would normally take days in a matter of a couple of hours. The issue here is that players who have less experience with the game can find themselves accelerating quickly without learning how the game is played. New players should probably spend some time with normal mode before trying to take a crack at Journey Mode.

Terraria can be played on PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, iOS, and Android.

Terraria's Journey Mode will let you play with item duplication, God mode and more

Journey Mode enables a tremendous range of customization: Make it easier, make it harder, or just make things.

The Terraria: Journey's End update will bring a hefty amount of new content and features to the nearly decade-old sandbox game, including items, enemies, mini-biomes, and two new difficulty levels: Master Mode and Journey Mode. Master Mode seems obvious enough—it's going to be tough—and we've speculated previously that Journey Mode might be a creative mode of some sort.

Today developer Re-Logic finally revealed what it's all about, saying that it's not a creative mode, but "a whole new way to experience Terraria" that enables significantly increased levels of freedom in, and control over, the game: "The ultimate evolution of being able to play your Terraria, any way you want."

"The goal of Journey Mode is to provide a more accessible experience by providing the player with unprecedented control over the gameplay experience," Re-Logic said. "A way to bring in all players of various skill levels and to be able to customize your experience to optimize the fun you have in the game."

All due respect to Re-Logic, but it is sort of a creative mode. For one thing, Journey mode characters can only be used in Journey Mode worlds, and conversely, characters from the other modes are not allowed to venture into Journey Mode—no exceptions. Journey Mode characters also begin with an "advanced starter gear package," as the studio calls it, which includes:

  • Iron Shortsword
  • Iron Pickaxe
  • Iron Hammer
  • Finch Staff (a bird that is happy to sit on your head when it isn't attacking your foes)
  • 100 Torches
  • Magic Mirror
  • Starter Wings (very limited flight, removes fall damage)

That's obviously going to make for an easier start in the new mode, but where it starts to get really interesting (and where the creative mode similarities kick in) is in "Research and Duplication." It's a new option that enables any of the more than 5000 items in the game to be "researched," which is simply a matter of acquiring a sufficient amount of the item in question, after which it can be duplicated at will. Once you've put 100 wood into R&D, for instance, you'll be able to create unlimited wood, at will.

Updates to the inventory interface, with a search option and filter tabs, will make it easier to manage what will no doubt be a much larger pile of stuff in the game, and of course being able to build freely will be vastly enhanced. You'll also be able to share your wealth with others: R&D works in multiplayer, so after you've unlocked an item you can immediately create enough for your friends to unlock it for themselves.

There's also an option to increase the placement range by what is, to my eye, a lot :

journey world terraria

Journey Mode also enables control over rain, wind, and even time: You can move the clock immediately to dawk, dusk, noon, or nighttime, accelerate time, or freeze it completely. A God Mode option will be available, which will vastly simplify life in the game, and you'll also be able to turn off the spread of Infection , which spawns new types of enemies after the Xenomite Crystal has been defeated.

If "easier" isn't your thing, it will also be possible to go in the other direction. While the difficulty level for normal games is selected at the world creation menu, Journey Mode will enable it to be adjusted on the fly: You can eliminate enemies altogether, or you can make them all Master Mode monsters. You'll also be able to adjust the spawn rate, so if you want wall-to-wall foes to fight, that's doable. The difficulty slider will impact all players in a multiplayer session, but the spawn rate only affects the area immediately around your character, which allows a little bit of a personalized challenge.

The mention of Master Mode would also seem to confirm what we expected: That it will be a high-level challenge for advanced players. Re-Logic didn't say anything further about it, however, so we'll have to wait to find out more about that. But not much longer: Terraria: Journey's End goes live on May 16.

The release of Terraria’s Journey’s End update has been years in the making and now that it’s out, there is a slew of new features available. Veterans of the game have especially been looking forward to the new Journey and Master modes, the biggest shake-up to the Terraria formula yet!

What is Journey Mode in Terraria?

The new Terraria Journey Mode allows the player to completely customize their Terraria experience. There will be new UI elements on the left side of the screen that gives players access to modify various elements of their world. Journey Mode essentially makes the player a god allowing them to control

  • The weather
  • Enemy Difficulty
  • Spawn Rates
  • And much more!

It’s pretty much Terraria with cheat codes. This new Terraria mode should prove to add even more creativity and replayability to the game.

What is Master Mode in Terraria?

If Journey Mode makes you feel like a god, the new Terraria Master Mode makes you feel like an ant. Master mode increases the difficulty past Expert making every enemy something to be feared. Along with the enemies being tougher, players will now lose 100% of their gold upon death. There is also exclusive loot for players able to overcome the challenge. Give this mode a try if you feel like you are up for a true challenge.

Terraria Master Mode

Anyone who owns a copy of Terraria will receive the 1.4 Journey’s End update and can enjoy these two new modes. They can be selected when creating a new world or character. If you are new to Terraria it may be a good idea to experience the original vanilla experience before diving into Journey Mode and Master Mode.

Check out the Terraria Journey’s End 1.4 Patch Notes to have a look at what’s new in this update.

Upon entering the Tutorial, the player will be prompted to talk to the Guide , and given the controls to move, aim, jump, close menus and interact with NPCs. The Guide has various lessons, which must be completed in order. Once a lesson has been completed, the next lesson can be started by talking to the Guide again. They are as follows:

  • Breaking trees to collect 10 Wood . The player will be given a Copper Axe .
  • Crafting a Work Bench .
  • Placing the Work Bench.
  • Crafting and placing a Wooden Door , Wooden Table and Wooden Chair in the unfinished house.
  • Defeating a slime , crafting some Torches and placing them to complete the house. The player will be given a Copper Shortsword .
  • Mining 15 Iron Ores . The player will be given a Copper Pickaxe and 25 Ropes .
  • Crafting 5 Iron Bars . The player will be given a Furnace .
  • Crafting and placing an Iron Anvil .
  • Crafting a set of Copper armor . The player will be given 99 Copper Bars .
  • Equipping the set of armor.
  • Defeating 2 enemies . The player will be given an Iron Bow plus some Wooden Arrows , and the time will be set to night .
  • Opening the Bestiary .
  • Opening the settings .

After every lesson is complete, the player is free to continue exploring the Tutorial world, but the Guide will recommend that they create their own.

The player starts on a small island, between a small hole covered by three Wood Platforms . Nearby there are some ores . The Tutorial will ask the player to do a certain task, and once it is completed the player will be able to start the next task. If the player, by accident or on purpose, does a task before they are asked to do so, the game will just let them skip it.

  • The game will first instruct the player to move around, jump, then fall through the nearby Wood Platforms.
  • After this, the player will be instructed to kill a Green Slime . The slime will always appear from the left.
  • The player will then be told to cut down a tree to obtain some wood. The player is then told how to use this wood via the inventory .
  • When the player enters their inventory, the player will be told how to switch between menus and how to craft. The player can leave the inventory after crafting three torches.
  • After exiting the inventory, the game directs the player to a vein of ore, which the player is told to mine.
  • After that, the player is told to build a house of a minimum of 6 by 10 blocks. Even though a house can be smaller in-game, the tutorial will not progress until the requirement is met.
  • The player will then craft a Work Bench , use it to craft a door , build the background walls for the house, and place a chair and Torch for a suitable house.

After these tasks are completed, the player can explore the world and do whatever they want, but it is recommended that they create their own world.

3DS world contents

  • If not killed by player as instructed in the script, the Green Slime will spawn endlessly regardless of the normal spawn limit, resulting in hundreds, if not an infinite amount, of slimes in the area.
  • The player starts with the standard five hearts (100 health) and can take damage from enemies and falling . However, damage will only reduce a player's HP to one quarter-heart (5 HP), meaning that in the Tutorial world the player is essentially invincible except from Burning , drowning and poisoning .
  • In the demo version of Terraria , only the Tutorial can be played.

Terraria’s Journey Mode could be my new favorite way to play

Image of Jordan Devore

There’s so many options to dig into

Terraria ‘s Journey’s End update isn’t just rekindling the tireless sandbox game with new items ( loads and loads of new items ), it’s also adding Journey Mode – an alternate, player-choice-driven way to play.

When it launches for PC on May 16 as part of the free update, Journey Mode will let you research and then duplicate items on an individual basis, control weather and the passage of time, fine-tune difficulty settings including enemy spawn rates, enable “god mode,” and increase the item placement range.

That summary is only scratching the surface . If you have enough time (and interest) to dig deeper, YouTuber ChippyGaming has an extended hands-on showcase of Journey Mode running in Terraria 1.4.

My first impression was that Journey Mode would be the inverse of the brutal new Master Mode (also arriving with Journey’s End), but it lets players “create both the easiest and the most difficult experiences that Terraria has to offer,” according to developer Re-Logic. “This is not Creative Mode.”

A few other things to note:

  • You can’t transfer characters in or out of Journey Mode worlds.
  • You’ll begin with preset items like Starter Wings (that negate fall damage), 100 torches, 100 ropes, a Finch Staff, a Magic Mirror, and Iron tools.
  • The R&D mode sounds like a ton of fun as someone who likes “making progress” in games. You can research items by clicking Benny the Construction Bunny in your inventory and placing enough of the item (the amount varies) into the R&D box. Once an item is sufficiently researched, you can duplicate it to your heart’s content.
  • “Clicking the icon for any item appearing in the Duplication Menu will instantly spawn a full stack of that item (materials, blocks, etc.) or a single duplicate of things like Weapons/Armor/Accessories.” There’s a search/filter tab to help you sort.
  • Journey Mode’s difficulty settings affect everyone in multiplayer, but the spawn rate option “will only impact the area around your character,” so “everyone can have their own mini-challenge slider.”

Re-Logic’s overall goal for Journey Mode was to come up with “a way to bring in all players of various skill levels and to be able to customize your experience to optimize the fun you have in game.”

Terraria PC players – and the console crowd, eventually – will have a lot to explore.

What is Journey Mode in Terraria and How Does it Work?

Terraria

Terraria’s Journey Mode was brought in with the 1.4 update “Journey’s End.” It is not unlike Minecraft or Fortnite’s ‘creative’ modes where players can enjoy all items and enemies in-game without limit. Terraria’s Journey Mode has a few key differences though, as explained below.

You can choose the Journey Mode option when you create a new character or world, which gives you the ability to explore Terraria without the restrictive challenge progression of the regular mode. Items must be ‘Researched’ before you can ‘Duplicate’ them in the world, but once you have completed enough research, you can duplicate the item an infinite amount of times. Enemies in the world are spawned at half health by default, but you are able to change that at any point using the Enemy Difficulty Slider.

When you are first spawned into the Journey Mode, you are given a set of equipment:

  • Fledgling Wings: grants the ability to leap higher and negates fall damage
  • Iron Shortsword
  • Iron Pickaxe
  • Iron Hammer
  • Finch Staff: grants the ability to summon a Baby Finch minion
  • Magic Mirror

Journey Mode’s Power Menu can be found under the main inventory slots. Here, you can access 7 different areas:

  • Duplication
  • Personal Power Menu
  • Infection Spread
  • Enemy Difficulty

journey world terraria

Duplication : This menu consists of categories of items available for duplication, and allows for duplication of those items. Duplicating items will not include the item modifiers.

Research: This is where you place items and see how many times you will need to research them for duplication.

Time: This menu has three settings where you can Freeze Time, Set Time, and Alter Time, which changes the speed that time passes. Speeding up time speeds up plant growth and star fall rates as well as biome spread.

Weather: Allows you full control over the weather.

Personal Power Menu: Includes three options: Enemy Spawn Rate Slider which lets you control the rate at which enemies appear in your world, Increased Placement Range which is enabled by default, and God Mode which allows you unlimited Mana, unlimited Breath, and makes you invulnerable to attack.

Infection Spread: Toggles to stop the spread of Corruption, Crimson, and Hallow.

Enemy Difficulty: A slider that increases or decreases the difficulty of enemies who spawn in your world.

Although Journey Mode can be pretty fun and interesting for all levels of players, it is suggested that you play through the regular mode first to understand the mechanics of the game. Jumping straight into Journey Mode can be quite overwhelming for newbies as all the mechanics, items, and enemies are basically at your fingertips!

OK the banner thing is ridiculously awesome. The rollerskates are curious... I wonder if they have similar mechanics as to minecarts? If so that would be awesome as you can hop on/off the rails anytime you want and not have to mount/dismount a minecart. Also, first! lol

I know you guys said you were gonna continue calling this update 1.4.5, but seriously with the size of this update it's looking like it should be called 1.5. I mean, wasn't 1.4 just supposed to be 1.3.6?

Would've loved to see the roller skates as an accessory, but I'm down to see what it can do for adventure maps

Starspark

Roller skates look sick. There's one feature I miss; being able to link equipment slots freely when switching loadouts. So, switching from loadout 1 to loadout 2, lets me have it defined to reuse the armor from loadout 1, so I can swap between damage and healing variant of spectre armor, and don't have to literally duplicate all my accessories when doing so. But, when using Loadout 3 (fishing) I would wanna use the angler helmet anyway. For example, if I'm on Loadout 2, I can select any slot and make it "Inherit from Loadout 1", "Inherit from Loadout 3" or "Native"/"Independent". Maybe do it via a lock icon above the right-hand side and right-click.

Lumireaver

I swear we used to be able to ctrl+click mannequins to swap loadouts with them.

I can already see all the cool adventure maps using roller skates once 1.4.5 comes out, especially parkour based ones. Extremely excited for the possibilities

Eltanin

Tying the kites down (as most likely thing in the banner is great! I do hope you manage to also make trapdoors work as platforms impassable to enemies, same as doors...
