A mini guide to Zizkov – Prague’s most authentic district

Most people who visit Prague focus only on the picture-perfect Old Town, Mala Strana and Hradcany.

And while those places are beautiful and make people fall in love with Czech capital there are also other neighborhoods in the city that are the reason why Prague is among my favorite cities in the world, the one I often return to!

One of these places, besides Holesovice that I adore, is Zizkov.

That’s the alternative area of Prague, a former working-class district, the most authentic neighbourhood of the Czech capital and the quintessence of its awesomeness.

Zizkov essentials

  • Airport transfer: Pre-book the airport transfer from Prague airport to your accommodation in Prague here .
  • Where to stay in Zizkov: Carlton (8.9/10) / Theatrino Hotel (8.4/10)
  • Best Zizkov tour: Non-touristy Prague – Cozy neighborhoods

A brief background of Zizkov Prague

Located behind the main train station Zizkov Prague until 1922 was a separated city. It was built in the way to squeeze as many people as possible in the very small space, hence the area is full of narrow, usually steep streets and high tenement houses.

It has always been an alternative, edgy place and the residents – most of them were workers, wretches, drunks, madmen and artists – were very proud of the bad reputation Zizkov has.

Up until now it is often called “Free Republic Zizkov”.

Sadly, as it often is in this kind of places , the neighbourhood is going through gentrification and is slowly changing towards more wealthy area.

But so far it still has its authentic, unique vibe that so many people look for in Prague and a place where some cool street art can be found!

What to see in Zizkov

Zizkov makes a perfect getaway from crowds in the Old Town and offers a great chance to see the real Prague.

That’s where the life goes by in its own pace, where the atmosphere is much more authentic and where you can meet local people in one of the pubs (Zizkov is number one district in Europe when it comes to the number of pubs, there’re over 300 of them in such a small area!).

Of course eating options are much better and more affordable here too!

After stuffing yourself with delicious Czech food and even more awesome Czech beer you can wander around some more. That’s also one of my favorite areas to stay at in Prague .

Be sure to check the former train track, now walking, biking and roller skating path at the bottom of Vitkov hill – not only it’s a pure pleasure to walk there but also you can take a look at the back of the tenement houses and have a small impression of the life in Zizkov!

While you are there go up to Vitkov hill for some of the amazing views of Prague. But the panorama isn’t the only reason why it’s worth to visit the hill.

You will find there the National Monument in Vitkov that, besides the mausoleum of Klement Gottwald and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, is home to the third-largest equestrian statue in the world – of Jan Žižka (a Czech general who died in 1424).

But the most known attraction of Zizkov Prague is the TV tower that looks like a big drill. You can see it from most of the points in the city and it has become some sort of the symbol of modern Prague.

The tower is also famous for the giant children climbing to the top – it’s one of the works of the controversial Czech artists David Cerny .

Not far from the Zizkov tower you will find Riegrovy Sady – one of the hidden gems of Prague, visited mostly by locals.

This green oasis in the heart of the city offers not only good areas to relax (like the beer garden) but also some amazing views of Prague.

It’s best to be here around the sunset for the best pictures and most vibrant atmosphere.

Where to eat and drink in Zizkov

Where to stay in Zizkov Prague

I highly recommend finding the accommodation in Zizkov.

You are far away from the crowds yet with good public transport connections to the main Prague attractions.

When staying in Zizkov you can get a taste of the real Prague and not only the Disneyland-alike center. Moreover the prices in Zizkov are so much more affordable!

These are the places to stay in Zizkov you should consider:

How to get to Zizkov

Public transport in Prague is very good and you can easily get to Zizkov from most of the places in Prague.

From the main train station you can take trams no 5, 9, 15 and 26 (one-three stops, depends where you are going).

Before your trip I suggest you save on your phone the file with the map of Prague public transport – you can download it from the official website here.

Whenever I visited Prague, I always stayed in the chic district of Bila Hora, an area of villas, green spaces and big thoroughfares. Last year however, accommodation in Bila Hora (where villa owners rent rooms to visitors) was scarce when I visited and so, I had to search for a room elsewhere. Without actually knowing where I was heading to, I took Tram 9 from the stop on Vaclavske namesti and after a short uphill ride that bypassed Hlavni nadrazi, I found myself in the district of Zizkov. At first glance, the place seemed to be a derelict run-down area frequented by delinquents, crooks and unemployed. I asked passers-by for hostel accommodation but nobody seemed to know that visitors need a room where to sleep. After walking downhill for a couple of minutes, I stumbled upon a hostel, appropriately named Prague Hostel. I was given a warm welcome and offered a simple clean room for next to nothing. I stayed here for 7 days enjoying both the hostel atmosphere as well as the general grubby ambience of Zizkov. Whenever I’ll visit Prague, I will return to Zizkov to stay and live as the locals do.

Zizkov is one of my favorite areas to stay in Prague too!

We were in Prague last month and fell in love with it. We did a night tour and went up in the tower on our last evening in Prague. I look forward to my next trip there. I, also, like travel, street art, and cafes. Will check out your newsletter.

It sounds like you had a wonderful time in Prague, Deborah. I’m glad to hear that!

I appreciate your overview of Žižkov (and your explanation of those creepy babies on the TV tower). I’m staying here for a month while participating in a writing workshop. The working-class history is interesting, but I do see plenty of the gentrification, too. I’ll be writing about my experience here, as well as some research into family origins in Moravia, on my Substack newsletter: https://joshuadolezal.substack.com/ .

Thanks! I was afraid Zizkov will be another place in Prague that gentrification would reach but guess that’s just a reality in most big cities these days. I hope you enjoy it there!

Zizkov Television Tower in Prague – Practical Info, History & Guide (2024)

Places to Visit

The complete visitors guide to Zizkov Television Tower in Prague, including tickets, prices, review, history and visitors guide (2024)

The modern Žižkov Television Tower is visible from pretty much anywhere in Prague, but it seems like it’s still very much of Prague’s ‘hidden secret’. After years of just looking at the tower, I’ve recently explored the Zizkov area and decided that I should visit the tower finally too.

In this guide, I want to share with you my experience of visiting the Zizkov TV Tower, and to give you inside tips on how to make the most of your visit to this fascinating building. I’ve included my favourite facts about the tower as well as practical information on tickets, opening times and what to see around once you are there.

tour zizkov prague

What is Zizkov TV Tower?

The Zizkov TV Tower was built during the years 1985 – 1992 based on the plans of Vaclav Aulicky and Jiri Kozak.

The Žižkov Television Tower is not only the tallest building in Prague, but also the highest observation deck in the Czech Republic, standing at 216 meters. The tower structure is made with three cylindrical steel tubes reaching a height of 134 meters. The main tube has two high-speed elevators, which go up to the observation area. The extra television antenna mast reaches a height of 216 meters.

The decision to build the Zizkov TV tower was made due to Prague’s continued expansion and increasing interference with television signals. The weight of the entire structure is around 2,200 tons and when it’s a clear sky you can see mountains as far as 100 km away. The tower also features 10 giant babies, sculptures by artist David Černý .

Is Zizkov TV Tower worth visiting?

Yes and no. I know some of my friends didn’t find it good value when they visited, because the tickets for children are not that much cheaper than adult tickets (so the entrance is quite pricey) and all you can do is to look around from the three lookout areas. The children ‘saw’ everything in about 10 minutes and the few panels that describe the building of the tower clearly didn’t hold their attention.

But I have to say, that I have enjoyed my visit – I took my time looking at the view figuring out all the different areas on the map and then in front of me – it’s like seeing a huge 3D map of Prague! I also stayed in the hanging pod chairs for a bit and read the morning news (the place was empty). On my way down I stopped for a coffee in the retro bar and the views from there were great too.

I thought it was a shame that the double glass was a bit misty so it was really difficult to take a clear picture.

Zizkov tv tower is best for…

So, whilst anyone can visit, I think that this place is probably best for couples, adults and romantic dates. You can spend time looking at wonderful views of Prague, have a cocktail or a coffee in the bar and there is even a restaurant if you want to stay for longer.

What to expect when you visit the Zizkov TV tower

OK, so first of all, if you got the impression that you will be able to see clearly Charles Bridge from the tower (which is what the official TV tower website shows you) you are going to be hugely disappointed!

You will be able to see the overall view of Prague and you will be able to work out Prague Castle on the other hill and Petrin Lookout Tower on the other, but not the Vltava river or any famous Prague bridges as they will be in the dip.

You will, however, have the best view of the Zizkov District and the immediate views of the nearby town houses and streets. You will also have a bird’s eye view of the Old Jewish Cemetery just under the tower.

Another thing that you need to know is that the viewing pods have double-sided thick windows (for obvious reasons), but these are sometimes steamed and in places scratched, so you will really need to work out the best spots to take photos of the views below.

If you are planning to take selfies or portrait photos with the view of Prague, that’s quite tricky too, because you will be mostly taking the photos into the light (and if the views are great, the light will be quite strong) and the double glazed windows won’t play ball. But you can still take great photos inside (and the pods are one of the favourite places where people take great selfies).

Crawling Babies on the TV Tower

If you’ve seen the Crawling Babies at Kampa Island, you will recognise these giant faceless babies crawling up the Žižkov Television Tower. These figures are intended to provoke thoughts about society’s relationship with technology as they have what looks like a scanning shopping code instead of their faces.

There are 10 different statues which were placed on the tower in 2000. Their placement on the tower was going to be only temporary, but people liked them, so they stayed permanently.

In 2017 the statues had to be taken down and were replaced by completely new copies. The new babies were made even heavier than the original statues and instead of 190 kg they now weigh 350 kg. They look quite small from the ground, but they are 350 cm long and 260 cm tall! The new statues were installed in 2019.

The Crawling Babies sculptures were originally made for an installation in the Museum of Modern Art in Chicago, but they were also displayed at the London Czech Embassy.

Interesting facts and history

The building of the Zizkov TV tower wasn’t without controversy. The most poignant part of the tower history is that to build it many graves and tombstones from the old Jewish cemetery underneath had to be moved to the New Jewish Prague Cemetery at nearby Olsany.

The need for a more powerful TV signal was discussed as far back as 1974. At the time Prague TV was using the Petrin Lookout Tower for their signal, but it wasn’t strong enough. There was a suggestion to extend the antenna on the Petrin tower because building another TV tower on the other side of Prague would mean moving TV antennas from individual houses to the new direction (and this would have cost a lot of money). The heritage committee didn’t like the idea of the extension of the Petrin tower, so a different place had to be found.

The location in the middle of the neglected Mahler’s Gardens in Zizkov was chosen as a possible place to build the new tower. The work began in 1985 and by spring 1989 the building was nearly finished.

After the Velvet Revolution, a lot of people wanted the tower to be pulled down, but because it was nearly finished, the building was completed and started work in 1991. The analogue TV signal transmission finished in 2009, but there are still analogue radios transmitting from the tower as well as digital TV and radio. The tower is also used by mobile providers to strengthen their signal and there is also equipment for monitoring the quality of air in Prague.

How to get to ZIzkov Tower from the centre of PRague

The Zizkov Television Tower is about 30 minutes away from the centre of Prague, which includes about a 15 minute tram ride or a few stops on the underground and no more than 10 minutes walk from the nearest tram or underground.

From the centre of Prague, take the underground from Staromestska (close to Old Town Square), Malostranska (under the Prague Castle), Mustek (close to the bottom of Wenceslas Square) or Muzeum (top of Wenceslas Square where the National Museum is) and get off at Jiriho z Podebrad.

If you want to take the tram, then take the number 9 tram called ‘Spojovaci’ from Ujezd (if you’ve just come down from the Petrin Lookout Tower), Narodni Divadlo or Vaclavske Namesti (middle of Wenceslas Square ) and ride 10-15 min to Lipanska Street.

Other Prague trams to get you to Lipanska tram stop are trams 1, 5, 8. Once you get off, you will need to walk up the hill to get to the tower, which takes about 10 mins.

The nearest Prague underground station (on line A) and tram stop is Jiriho z Podebrad (trams 1, 11, 13) and then it’s about 7-10 minutes walk.

Opening Times

9 – midnight every day, all year round (major public holidays such as Christmas Day might be closed, so check directly)

Entrance Fee

Prices range from 190 CZK for children to 300 CZK for adult tickets. Over 60s concession is 250 CZK. Family tickets (2 adults + 2 children) are 640 CZK.

Tickets Where to get tickets

You can buy tickets online or directly at the reception at the bottom of the TV tower. Because the best time to visit is when the weather is good and the visibility is perfect, you might want to leave the purchasing the tickets until you get there in case the weather changes.

If you are buying your ticket online, you can buy it by using any debit/credit card, but if you want to purchase a ticket at the tower, you need to pay with cash (yup, don’t get that one either!). There is no cashpoint on site or nearby so bring some with you.

How much time to allow for your visit

You are welcome to stay as long as you like and enjoy the views from the viewing pods or use the bar or restaurant below.

The minimum amount of time you should allocate is at least 45-60 minutes. There is a short exhibition about the building of the TV tower, plus the weather can change so you might like to linger a bit to get the best photos.

I spent a good 2,5 hrs, because I was taking photos, catching up on e-mails whilst sitting in the fun pod chairs (there were not a lot of people around), waiting for the clouds to move a bit and then went for a drink to the bar.

When to visit

If you want to get a good view or take decent photos, you need to make sure that it’s a clear day. Check the weather forecast before you set out, look out from your hotel window and if the visibility is not great, it won’t improve much on the top of the tower.

I visited in the middle of winter, when the weather was changeable – rain and a bit of sun, so I had to stay for quite a bit longer than I wanted to be able to take some photos of the views.

Refreshments

There is an Oblaca bar and a restaurant in the Zizkov TV tower. The bar has a retro feel to it and serves all sorts of cocktails, tea, coffee and soft drinks too. Cocktails start from 195 CZK and coffee from 80CZK.

The Oblaca restaurant is in another side pod area and has also great views of Prague and the food here is described as a modern Czech with a twist (soups from 225 CZ and mains from 450-800 CZK. The breakfast menu at Bistro 66, which is also based in the tower, looks really good and starts from 135 CZK. The bistro is also great for an informal lunch (soups from 95 CZK and mains from 225 CZK) or coffee and a dessert at any time of the day (freshly prepared desserts from 135 CZK).

There is also another informal restaurant at the bottom of the tower called Miminoo Garden. This restaurant is inspired by Italian cuisine, so you will pizza, pasta and seafood on the menu here. The prices start from 95 CZK for soups, 225 CZK for mains and 125 CZK for desserts.

There are toilets in the mezzanine level above the restaurant and bar (you have to enter the bar area and then head for the iron staircase).

Can I visit Zizkov Tower independently or do I need a guided tour to visit

It’s perfectly fine to visit the TV tower on your own, the signage and information are all in Czech and English language and if you need anything the staff are used to speaking in English on a regular basis.

You might also like to combine the visit to the tower with a walk around Zizkov (see my full guide to Zizkov District area ).

How to avoid crowds at Zizkov Tower

From what I could see, every time I walked around the tower and the time I actually visited inside the TV tower, there was never a huge amount of people anywhere, so it should be pretty easy to avoid the crowds . If you are worried that you might run into a lot of people, then weekdays are always going to be less busy than weekends.

The tower is open until midnight every day, so you can come here later in the day and stay for the sunset if you like.

You can also check on the Zizkov Tower website the exact number of visitors at any given point in time, the visibility and the weather forecast.

Special Events

During the summer (July and August) there is an open-air theatre performing under a big tent in the little square in front of the TV tower. The plays are in Czech, but there are often Shakespeare and other international playwriters included in the programme.

In the winter, there is also a small ice skating ring, so if you are planning to visit Prague in December you can spend some time practising your pirulets! You can borrow ice skates at the ring, so just wrap up warm.

What else you can see & do nearby

  • Old Jewish Cemetary under the Zizkov TV Tower
  • Old Telephone Exchange building opposite the tower (closed to the public, but you can walk around )
  • Palace Akropolis – interesting corner house from the 1930s with a restaurant, bar, cafe and music and theatre venue
  • Mini Golf – there is an 18-hole mini golf underneath the tower, which is open all year round.

Exploring Zizkov (in Czech Žižkov): A Comprehensive Guide to Prague's Unique Neighborhood

Updated: Feb 4

An image of Zizkov tower and neighborhood in Prague city

Introduction with history

Žižkov, a vibrant district of Prague, is a neighborhood steeped in history and brimming with life. Named after the famed Hussite military leader Jan Žižka, Žižkov was once an independent city before being incorporated into Prague in 1922.

The history of Žižkov dates back to the 14th century when Emperor Charles IV decided to establish vineyards around Prague. The area was originally part of the sparsely populated countryside outside of Prague. Over time, it transformed into a bustling neighborhood, known for its vineyards on the slopes of Vitkov Hill.

Žižkov is also home to the largest graveyard in Prague, Olšanské hřbitovy, and the New Jewish Cemetery, where Franz Kafka is buried. The district has witnessed significant historical events, including the Battle of Vitkov Hill in 1420, where Žižka's peasant army decisively defeated the forces of Sigismund, Holy Roman Emperor.

Today, Žižkov is known for its unique personality and eclectic vibe. It's rumored to have more pubs per square kilometer than any neighborhood in Europe, perhaps even worldwide. A Guide to Zizkov: Prague’s Most Vibrant and Edgy District

Rosie A.

Zizkov has long been a favorite haunt of students, artists and musicians. As you walk through its streets, you will find no shortage of quirky cafes, delightfully shady watering holes and edgy art galleries.

Although many of its streets and buildings have a somewhat neglected and shabby feel, it won’t take long for you to be mesmerised by the cheeky, rebellious charms of this area. The centre of town can often feel like an over-priced, manufactured playground for tourists and if you want to get away from all of that, you’re not going to do much better than Zizkov.

Vitkov hill and the national monument.

If you take a brisk stroll to the sumit of Vitkov Hill, you will be rewarded with some beautiful views of the city, but this is not all. Once you have made it to the top it is difficult to miss the giant bronze statue of a man riding a horse. This statue is the third largest equestrian statue in the world and is really quite impressive when seen up close.

The man on the horse is the legendary Jan Zizka , after whom the area of Zizkov is named. This staute was built in honour of his defeat over Emperor Sigismund in 1420. Although Zizka’s forces were ludicrously outnumbered in this battle by around 10-1, his tenacity on the battle field still won victory for him and his men.

National Monument of Jan Zizka Statue at Vitkov Hill

Just underneath this statue you will find the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier , which contains unidentified remains of Czechoslovak soldiers, who fought during WWI and WWII. Today it is a place where people come to give thanks to those who gave their lives fighting for freedom and liberation.

The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and the Statue of Jan Zizka make up just part of the National Monument . The Czech Republic is a country with a rich and fascinating history and in the central hall of the monument, you can find out more about some of the 20 th century’s more pivotal moments. In the basement, you can even view the machines which were used by the Soviets during their failed attempts to preserve the remains of Klement Gottwald, former leader of the Communist party.

  • Monument is publicly available to everyone at anytime. Admission fee is 120 CZK
  • The central hall of the monument is currently open to visitors from Thursday until Sunday from 10:00 –  16:00
  • Address:  U Pamatniku 1900, 130 00 Prague 3

Olsanske Hrbitovy (Olsany Cemetery)

To spend the afternoon strolling through a cemetery may sound like a somewhat morbid pastime, but trust me when I tell you that no trip to Zizkov would be compete without exploring Olsanske Hrbitovy , the city’s largest cemetery. You will find grand family crypts and art noveau masterpieces alongside neglected headstones and crumbling tombs. This is place where you will always be surrounded by the beautiful and the intriguing.

Olsany Cemetery, One of the Most Peaceful Places in Prague

The cemetery’s most famous resident is probably Jan Palach , a student who set himself a light on Wenceslas Square to protest against Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968.

  • The cemetery is accessed by taking the 11, 16, 10 or 15 tram to the stop Olsanske Hrbitovy and is generally open during the hours of daylight
  • There is no entrance fee
  • Address:  Vinohradska 1835/153, 130 00 Prague 3

Ice Skating Below the TV Tower

No tour of Zizkov is complete until you’ve taken a close up look at Prague’s tallest building. The TV tower is a whopping 216 meters tall and is even more eye-catching thanks to the giant faceless babies which crawl up and down it (courtesy of ex Zizkov resident and internationally renowned sculptor, David Cerny). However, once you’re here it’s possible to do much more than simply look at the tower. From December to March, you will find a 30 x 14 meters  skating rink open every day at the base of the tower. It is possible to rent skates here and there is also an outdoor bar serving a range of hot drinks and snacks.

  • Opening hours: 11:00  – 21:00 (from 09:00 during the weekends) until end of March 2017

The Palac Akropolis

No guide to Zizkov would be complete without mention of the Akropolis. The builder and architect of this building, Rudolf V. Svoboda, dreamed that it would be:

“ an extraordinary house where I would find various spaces with great music, theater and fine-art. Where would I have meetings, a beer, where could I dance with friends and have fun till the morning. Where would you buy things that you cannot buy elsewhere and where you meet people that you would not meet elsewhere. ”

View on Palac Akropolis from the Outside

Today his dream is a reality. The Akropolis is a night club, concert venue, theater, exhibition space, café and restaurant. Both Czech and international artists regularly perform here so it’s worthwhile checking out their website to see exactly what’s coming up.

3 Zizkov Prague

Žižkov is one of the most picturesque and striking parts of Prague. From the outset, it was intended to be a neighbourhood of tenements rented by those moving to the Czech capital in search of work. The neighbourhood grew rapidly during industrial development in the second half of the 19th century. In contrast to adjoining Vinohrady, which has broad avenues and a regular gridiron plan, the streets of Žižkov are narrow and have an irregular layout. Although the flats are mostly small and poorly lit, they are housed in buildings with facades inspired by Italian Renaissance and Baroque palaces. The apartment blocks stand on steep slopes, also giving the quarter a unique character, which is sometimes compared to that of the Montmartre district of Paris.

The name “Žižkov” is linked to the famous Hussite General Jan Žižka of Trocnov, a fearless military leader who stood invincible against any army. Such a name is therefore very appropriate, given the rebellious atmosphere that has been associated with the working-class area for most of its existence. The provocative spirit of Žižkov remained during the communist period, which is probably why this part of Prague was the first to be earmarked for wholesale demolition. Sadly, today, in place of the oldest part, gleaming uniform prefabricated blocks of flats now stand, giving an idea of the sad fate awaiting Žižkov were it not for the Velvet Revolution of 1989. After that, Žižkov became one of Prague’s liveliest districts, acquiring a reputation for an unbelievable number of bars and pubs. Thankfully, the free, easy-going spirit of the “Žižkov Republic”, as it used to be known during the interwar period because of its particular character, lives on today in many places.

Most important sights:

Architecturally, all of Žižkov is worth seeing, but to get the best panorama of the neighbourhood, visit the Nátional Memorial on the summit of Vítkov Hill. Dating from the 1930s, the structure is a memorial to the Czechoslovak Republic and is characterised by exceptional monumentality emphasised by the world’s largest equestrian statue.

The pubs are some of the most important cultural institutions in Žižkov and give the area its atmosphere and character. The most notable is undoubtedly U Vystřelenýho oka (The Shot-Out Eye), adorned with paintings by outstanding artist Martin Velíšek.

Žižkov: A Guide to Prague’s Most Unique Neighborhood

Kenny Dunn

For the last several years, I have called Prague’s Žižkov neighborhood home. Arguably the city’s most lively district, Žižkov is rumored to have more pubs per square kilometer than any neighborhood in Europe, perhaps even worldwide. Besides pub-hopping, there is a whole lot to see and do, and it’s definitely worth a visit for those looking for a more local experience. Here’s just a taste of what Žižkov has to offer, and what makes it so great!

Žižkov: A guide to Prague's most unique neighborhood

The History

For many years Žižkov had a reputation as a gritty, working-class neighborhood, and in many ways the description still fits. Its cobblestone streets are far from spotless, and there are still plenty of dark, shady pubs that mostly appeal to hard-drinking locals. Žižkov is named after the Hussite general Jan Žižka, whose enormous statue sits proudly on his horse at the top of Vítkov hill. The 13 th -14 th century military leader was known as a shrewd tactician and wore a patch over one eye after losing it in battle. Besides his statue is the massive National Monument , which contains a Czech history museum and used to house the mausoleum of Communist-era President Klement Gottwald. Military buffs should also check out the nearby Czech army museum , noticeable because of the tank parked out front.

Žižkov: A guide to Prague's most unique neighborhood

Žižkov is also the place where many Czechs go when they die: Olšanské hřbitovy , the largest graveyard in Prague, lies next to the shopping mall at the Flora metro stop. Franz Kafka is buried in the New Jewish Cemetery just east of Olšanské cemeteries.

Despite its blue-collar roots, Žižkov has taken on a more alternative, eclectic personality in recent decades. Perhaps this is best represented by the 216-meter-tall Žižkov TV Tower , an odd structure visible from nearly everywhere in the city. In case you’re wondering, the faceless babies crawling up and down the tower were added in 2000 by Czech pop artist David Černý, because apparently the Žižkov Tower wasn’t strange-looking enough as it was. The tower contains an observation deck and restaurant, and a mini golf course was recently installed in the surrounding park. Because why not?

Žižkov: A guide to Prague's most unique neighborhood

While its architecture may not be as spectacular as Prague’s Old Town, Žižkov still has plenty of beautiful and unique buildings. Besides the Tower, the most notable building is perhaps the Church of the Most Sacred Heart of our Lord (Kostel Nejsvětějšího Srdce Páně in Czech) on Jiřího z Poděbrad Square. The eccentric modernist church is truly one-of-a-kind, and the nearby farmer’s market (featured in our post on Prague’s markets ) that takes place on the square on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, serves as a reminder that Žižkov is primarily a residential neighborhood.

Church of the Most Sacred Heart of our Lord Náměstí Jiřího z Poděbrad 112/19 +420 222 727 713 srdcepane.cz

Žižkov is more laid-back compared to the center of Prague, and there is plenty of green space to enjoy during nice weather. Although the popular Riegrovy Sady park is located in neighboring Vinohrady, Žižkov has Parukářka , with its very Žižkov-esque pub and beer garden, plus great views of Old Town and Prague Castle. Below the park is an underground bunker which was originally a bomb shelter, then an underground music club, and now contains a climbing wall and “nuclear museum.”

Now, let’s shift the focus to what Žižkov is best-known for: its pub culture and nightlife! On many streets you can barely walk 50 meters without passing a bar. Not all of them are used to English speakers and tourists, so when in Žižkov try to act as a žižkovak does. This is just a small sample of what Žižkov has to offer as there are just too many great pubs to mention here!

If we’re talking pubs, few places scream “Žižkov!” more loudly than U Vystřelenýho Oka . This somewhat hidden pub, translated into English as “At the shot-out eye,” is named in honor of one-eyed Jan Žižka. There is a modest selection of bar snacks and Czech meals, but most customers come to drink Pilsner Urquell and smoke cigarettes. It also has a neat beer garden tucked away in back if you happen to visit when it’s warm.

Žižkov: A guide to Prague's most unique neighborhood

For those who would prefer not to smell like smoke the next morning, Pivo a Párek (Beer and Frankfurter) is a nice option. In addition to being a non-smoking pub, they have a large variety of Czech beer and of course, hot dogs and sausages. Žižkov also has several good cocktail bars, including the tropical Tiki Taky bar, with a festive, island-themed atmosphere that stands out among the more traditional Czech pubs nearby.

The Cafes, Restaurants and Clubs

The best-known hotspot in Žižkov is Palác Akropolis , a massive complex with a restaurant, several bars, a decent-sized concert venue and a music club that stays open as late as necessary for most people! Its informal atmosphere, convenient location and nearly daily concerts and DJs means that pretty much everyone in town stops by Akropolis from time to time.

Žižkov: A guide to Prague's most unique neighborhood

One of my favorite destinations for Czech food and beer, U Slovanské Lípy , is located under the shadow of Vítkov hill. This traditional pub/restaurant, which claims to be the oldest pub in Žižkov, serves reasonably-priced Czech meals and has 8 rotating beer taps which feature some of the Czech Republic’s top microbreweries. If you’re looking for grilled meat, few places do it better than Polo restaurant at the Biskupcova tram stop. Polo is traditional Czech cuisine with a more modern feel, and they also serve top-notch Pilsner Urquell from a tank. Lastly, if you’re a bit burned out on Czech food, stop by the Czech-American pub U Kurelů , which started serving Žižkov locals over a century ago and recently re-opened with a more international vibe. Quickly becoming a favorite destination for expats, U Kurelů serves international food including burgers, hot dogs, bánh mì , Tex-mex, and more.

U Kurelů Chvalova 1 [email protected] (reservations by email) ukurelu.cz Open: Tue – Sun 5 pm – 11 pm

Despite the local affinity for beer, Žižkov has a growing number of cafes for those who prefer to socialize in a well-lit, healthier environment. One option is the pleasant and sunny Žižkavárna , which, besides coffee, also offers draft beer, wine, tea, sandwiches and other small meals.

Žižkov: A guide to Prague's most unique neighborhood

Other Things to Do in Žižkov

One venue which accurately represents Žižkov’s alternative vibe is Nákladového nádraží Žižkov . Hidden among an otherwise unattractive railroad depot, you’ll find an art space and cafe with a large outdoor seating area situated among the train tracks and wagons. They also put on lots of different events, exhibitions, and concerts, including a summer cinema and food festivals. It’s impressive to see how they have transformed this deteriorating train depot into a gathering place for the community.

Žižkov: A guide to Prague's most unique neighborhood

Žižkov is also the home of my favorite cinema in Prague, Kino Aero . It shows a variety of films, including many independent and foreign films, and has an old-school theater feel. You can chill in the bar/cafe area or the outdoor courtyard before the film starts, grab a drink and bite to eat, and of course you can bring your beer into the cinema!

Kino Aero Biskupcova 31 +420 271 771 349 kinoaero.cz (information about tickets here ) Bar open: Mon – Fri 10 am – 12 midnight, Sat – Sun 11.30 am – 12 midnight

If you’re in town during football season (in the Czech Republic from September – November, then picks back up again February – May), check out a game at the stadium of local club Viktoria Žižkov . Currently struggling to get back into the top Czech league, it’s well worth the price of admission (starting at 60 CZK) to join the small, but lively Žižkov supporters. Strangely enough, Viktoria often plays home matches at 10.15 am on Sundays, so it presents the rare chance to have a beer and sausage before noon!

Viktoria Žižkov Stadium Seifertova street, at Husinecká tram stop +420 221 423 427 fkvz.cz (since the website is extremely unhelpful you can find upcoming matches here )

There is so much more to say about Žižkov, and so many more places worth mentioning, but you’ll have to come and see for yourselves! If you’re visiting Prague, take a break from the crowded tourist areas and find out how us Žižkov locals live.

If fans purchase tickets for a show in the U.S. or Canada and can’t attend, they’ll have the option to resell them to other fans at the original price paid. To help protect the Exchange, the tour has requested all tickets be mobile only and restricted from transfer. This applies to all shows except those in Colorado, Illinois, and New York where Face Value Exchange cannot be mandated. Please note, a valid bank account or debit card within the country of your event is required to sell on the Face Value Exchange. More information on how the Ticketmaster Exchange works is available here .
