Old Town Hall

Top choice in Staré Město

Prague’s Old Town Hall, founded in 1338, is a hotchpotch of medieval buildings acquired piecemeal over the centuries, presided over by a tall Gothic tower with a splendid Astronomical Clock. As well as housing the Old Town’s main tourist information office, the town hall has several historic attractions and hosts art exhibitions on the ground floor and the 2nd floor.

The main entrance is to the left of the clock; beyond that is the House at the Minute (dům U minuty), an arcaded building covered with Renaissance sgraffito – Franz Kafka lived here (1889–96) as a child just before the building was bought by the town council.

Visitors take a guided tour that proceeds through the council chamber and assembly room, with beautiful mosaics dating from the 1930s, before visiting the Gothic chapel and taking a look at the inner workings of the 12 apostles who parade above the Astronomical Clock every hour. The tour includes the tower and is rounded off with a trip through the Romanesque and Gothic cellars beneath the building.

The area outside the town hall is one of the most crowded corners of the Old Town Square, especially during the hourly show put on by the Astronomical Clock . Around the corner to the right, a plaque on the building’s eastern face lists the 27 Protestant nobles who were beheaded here in 1621 after the Battle of Bílá Hora; white crosses on the ground mark where the deed was done. Another plaque commemorates a critical WWII victory by Red Army and Czechoslovak units at Dukla Pass in Slovakia, and yet another, the Czech partisans who died during the Prague Rising on 8 May 1945. If you look at the neo-Gothic eastern gable, you can see that its right-hand edge is ragged – the wing that once extended north from here was blown up by the Nazis the day before the Soviet army marched into the city in 1945.

Prague has a new Tourism Strategy: more domestic visitors and the needs of the city first and foremost

Prague, October 19, 2020 - The City’s leaders, together with the Prague City Tourism co. and in cooperation with the Prague City Hall Institute of Planning and Development, have drawn up a Business Roadmap for tourist visits to the Capital City of Prague. Its purpose is to balance the economic benefits of tourism with the strategic interest of the city and its residents. It thus sets up a new, comprehensive and sustainable approach to tourism issues in the capital. The Roadmap was unanimously approved by Prague elected representatives on Thursday, October 15, 2020.

“The newly created Roadmap is our strategic concept for the next several years, to maximize the positives of tourism and minimize the negatives associated with it. We are not only addressing tourism itself, but reflecting the needs and interests of the city and its residents. We want to bring tourism to a new level for a sophisticated clientele, looking for local ambience, and seeking original, authentic and local products and services, spending more per capita,” says Hana Třeštíková, Councillor for Culture and Tourism, adding: “I think we will all gladly see Prague off the list of top destinations for cheap alcotourism.”

The Roadmap is in response to problems typified by the chronically congested city centre, which has trouble coping with the negative effects of overtourism and touristification, whereby the day-to-day facilities for residents are squeezed out and replaced with functions and services targeted solely at tourists. The new Roadmap aims to change that. It is designed for the benefit and better quality of life of Praguers, emphasizes the distinctive cultural heritage and uniqueness that Prague has to offer and seeks to create conditions for tourist growth as part of the city’s sustainable development.

The Roadmap will be implemented through an action plan drawn up annually by Prague City Tourism. The action plan will set out concrete steps for each area, in consultation with the councillors concerned. The implementation of the Roadmap will require involvement by all the relevant stakeholders, such as Prague City Hall, the City Districts, key organizations and institutions at city and government level, local residents, as well as the business and non-profit sectors.

The new strategy is preparing for times ahead, as tourists once again begin returning to Prague. Thanks to its provisions, the City will improve communication with its residents, increase the proportion of domestic versus international tourists and ensure commensurate sustainable tourism. The Coronavirus crisis has shown that this is the right direction for tourism in Prague, experts agree. The importance and need for the Roadmap is borne out by the fact that its adoption last Thursday at the Prague City Hall meeting was unanimously approved by all present representatives.

The City is already implementing the first steps of the strategy, hand-in-hand with Prague City Tourism. This includes, e.g. creating new tourist routes outside the city centre. Work is also underway on sustainable tourism branding and greening the city’s supply chain. Also in preparation is a toolkit for smart tourism, namely an app to gather data on tourist preferences, making it viable to set up further follow-up services. This is also linked to the challenge of making the capital a barrier-free, fully accessible city.

According to František Cipro, Chairman of the Prague City Tourism Board of Directors, the aim is also to improve communication toward tourists, to better inform them about Prague’s rules and regulations, and how to conduct themselves. Prague seeks to do this, for example, by developing night-life zones in non-residential areas, to minimize disturbance. Another aim is to create the kind of tourist proposition that will bring visitors back to the capital repeatedly.

“This is the first comprehensive Strategic Roadmap for the Destination Management of the city. Among other things, in the future we want to promote tourism outside the high season and to target visitor groups coming to Prague for reasons other than a quick snapshot on Charles Bridge or wild partying,” concludes František Cipro.

Prague Visitor Pass

Prague Visitor Pass

This is the Prague Visitor Pass

Prague visitor pass: attractions, public transport with visitor pass, what we like about the visitor pass, what we don't like about the visitor pass, faq about the visitor pass.

The Prague Visitor Pass is the official City Card of the city of Prague. With the Visitor Pass you can visit many top attractions for free and use other tourist services.

Buy your Prague Visitor Pass online today and also download the free app.

The Prague Visitor Pass offers around 60 services that you can use free of charge. These include all of Prague's top attractions. In the table below you can see some important sights. Compare what you would have to pay for these services without Visitor Pass and with Visitor Pass:

In this example, you save 46 euros with the Visitor Pass compared to buying tickets individually. This is just a small excerpt of the benefits of the Prague Visitor Pass. If you visit additional sights, you will save even more money. The following offers should also be attractive for most visitors:

  • City tour with the tourist tram line 42
  • Powder Tower
  • Kampa Museum
  • National Museum of Technology
  • Charles Bridge Museum
  • Prague TV Tower in Žižkov
  • Mirror maze
  • Lobkowicz Palace
  • Botanical Garden
  • Vyšehrad Cathedral

You can visit these and other attractions free of charge with the Prague Visitor Pass.

You can find a complete list here.

You can also find all the attractions in the Prague Visitor Pass app, which you can download free of charge from the Apple Store and Google Store.

Hint: The city tours take place several days a week, but not every day. Tram line 42 only runs at weekends during the low season. Current dates for the tram and the city tours you can find here .

These attractions are missing

The Prague Visitor Pass contains an excellent selection of Prague attractions. Nevertheless, there are a few services missing that we would like to see. The following offers are not included in the scope of services:

  • Hop-on/hop-off bus
  • Boat trip on the Vltava (there is 20% discount)
  • National Museum
  • Staropramen Visitor Centre

Also, you will not get priority entry with the Prague Visitor Pass.

The city of Prague has a very good public transport system. Even as a visitor, you will find it easy to use the metro or tram. You can easily reach all attractions by metro or tram. In addition, there are numerous bus lines.

tourist information office prague

With the Prague Visitor Pass you can use all public transport free of charge as long as your pass is valid. The Airport Express Bus is also free of charge with the Visitor Pass. At Prague Airport, take the AE bus to the main train station in the city centre.

From the main station you can quickly reach your accommodation by metro or tram.

If you use the Prague Visitor Pass digitally on your phone, activate the pass in your app before your first journey. Show your digital QR code when boarding the bus or at a ticket inspection.

Here you can find maps for the metro, tram and bus networks in Prague.

There are many arguments in favour of the Visitor Pass:

  • With the Visitor Pass you can visit most of Prague's top attractions for free. A guided city tour, a boat trip and a tram city tour are also available free of charge.
  • You can use all public transport free of charge - including metro, tram, buses and Airport Express Bus.
  • The pass is valid for 48, 72 or 120 hours. You do not have to stick to calendar days, but can also start using it in the afternoon.
  • Download the Prague Visitor Pass to your phone for convenient use as soon as you arrive in Prague. If you prefer to use a physical card, you can also pick up the Visitor Pass in Prague.
  • You can use the handy Prague Visitor Pass app on your phone. The app contains useful information about all participating attractions (incl. opening hours and addresses).
  • Overall, the Prague Visitor Pass is a very convenient product. With just one purchase, everything is paid for: you don't need any other tickets or travel passes. You don't have to pick up the pass in Prague.

Nevertheless, there are also a few things that we like less about the passport:

  • The Prague Visitor Pass is relatively expensive. You need to visit many attractions to make the pass worthwhile. In doing so, you only make a small saving.
  • You will not be given priority admission. If you are at an attraction, you must queue at the box office and collect your free ticket.
  • To use the app, you must first register.
  • With the Prague Visitor Pass you cannot use the hop-on/hop-off buses. The choice of free boat trips is also limited.

Finally, we would like to answer the question of whether it is worth buying the Prague Visitor Pass. Important criteria for us are the selection of attractions, the free use of public transport, the flexible validity and the value for money.

Prague’s 10 Districts: Where to Stay While Traveling

10 Bezirke von Prag Guide zum Wohnen während Reisen

Prague is divided into 10 city districts.

District 1 is the city center and therefore the most important district in Prague. The best districts to stay in during a city trip are districts 1 and 2.

Here, we describe all ten districts in detail.

District 1 (Praha 1)

Bezirk 1 (Praha 1)

This district is the city center of Prague and THE favorite for staying, especially for first-time travelers. It includes the Old Town , the Jewish Quarter, and adjacent areas of Lesser Town, the Hradcany Castle District, and the New Town.

As the historical and cultural heart of the city, District 1 holds the top sights in Prague . In addition, there is a wide selection of hotels  and shopping options, as well as Prague’s famous nightlife. However, do not expect much silence.

District 2 (Praha 2)

Bezirk 2 (Praha 2)

Praha 2 is characterized by a good location, varied culinary offerings, quite a few churches and museums . It is home to the Vyšehrad district near the center, with the castle of the same name, and the popular Vinohrady suburb, which boasts excellent restaurants and green spaces.

Furthermore, part of the New Town is in District 2. Since Praha 2 is very hilly, there are many places to enjoy beautiful scenic views.

District 3 (Praha 3)

Bezirk 3 (Praha 3)

District 3 is an interesting combination. A large part is taken up by the Žižkov district, a typical working-class neighborhood with the Prague TV Tower as its top attraction.

Lower Žižkov should rather be avoided as a tourist. The district also includes a part of Vinohrady, which is closer to the center and more upscale, and consists mainly of residential areas. Both districts are less touristy, but in terms of food and accommodation comparatively cheaper than district 1.

District 4 (Praha 4)

Bezirk 4 (Praha 4)

Praha 4 is located in the southern part of the city on the right bank of the Vltava River. Mainly the district consists of residential areas, which makes it less interesting for tourists.

One attraction could be the Podolí district with its traditional Czech restaurants and pubs and its beautiful location by the river.

District 5 (Praha 5)

Bezirk 5 (Praha 5)

This district attracts with beautiful parks and numerous shopping and nightlife opportunities. Particularly popular is the Smíchov industrial district, which borders the Lesser Town on the south.

It offers a good selection of trendy restaurants, clubs, and bars, as well as a large shopping center. Smíchov is a good alternative if you do not want to stay in the center.

District 6 (Praha 6)

Bezirk 6 (Praha 6)

Praha 6, in the western part of Prague, is considered the most exclusive district in the city. Numerous Czech politicians, foreign businessmen, and diplomats have settled in this noble district.

Praha 6 is characterized by elegant villas, idyllic parks, such as Šárecké údolí and Hvězda, and proximity to the airport .

District 7 (Praha 7)

Bezirk 7 (Praha 7)

The main attraction in Praha 7 is the Prague Zoo and the National Technical Museum . The district, which is characterized by a lot of nature and charming pubs and restaurants, is especially popular with students.

With its two city parks , Letna and Stromovka, it is a popular recreational area. Worth highlighting is the Holešovice district, dubbed as the next trendy district in Prague, attracting more and more visitors with its boutiques, art galleries, and cafes.

District 8 (Praha 8)

Bezirk 8 (Praha 8)

This district in the northern part of Prague is undergoing a transformation. Long considered one of the poorest districts in Prague, Praha 8 is now on the upswing. This is especially true of the Karlin district, where many new office buildings are taking up residence.

The northern part of the district is located very outside Prague and does not offer good transport connections to the city center.

District 9 (Praha 9)

Bezirk 9 (Praha 9)

Praha 9 is located in the northeastern part of Prague and is considered very remote. It consists mainly of housing estates and commercial and industrial areas.

The Cerny Most district could gain in importance with the opening of a large shopping center and the extension of metro line B. The district is by and large less accessible and rather unattractive for tourists.

District 10 (Praha 10)

Bezirk 10 (Praha 10)

District 10 includes the Vršovice district, which is similar to the neighboring Vinohrady district. Praha 10 is characterized by residential neighborhoods, as well as authentic Czech stores, restaurants, and pubs.

The areas of Praha 10 that are closer to the center, are more accessible and attractive than the parts of the district that are further away.
