Spring While still chilly, spring in Spokane brings more days of sun and temperatures reaching the low 60s, although it isn’t uncommon to experience temperatures in the 40s and rain, wind, or snow.

Summer Summer is one of the best times to visit Spokane thanks to long, sunny days and very little precipitation. Temperatures can reach daytime highs in the 90s, but Spokane is surrounded by lakes and rivers if you need to cool off.

Fall Early fall (September and the first half of October) closely mimics summer. You’ll find warm, sunny days with cooler mornings and evenings. By the end of October and the start of November, fall has settled in with changing leaves, temperatures in the 50s, and a few more days of precipitation.

Winter Winter in the Inland Northwest is cold, and snow is common. December through early February sees daily temperatures in the 30s, and the days are short. By the end of February and early March, Spokane starts to see its first glimpses of spring as temperatures begin to warm.

Riverfront Park

Riverfront Park is a defining place to visit at the center of the city. It encompasses over 100 acres of green space and pedestrian trails, as well as dozens of community attractions. Several events and activities also occur at the park throughout the year.

The park was founded in 1974 when Spokane became the smallest city to ever host the World's Fair. The enormous United States Pavilion was the largest structure built for the World's Fair, which was big enough to house trees and represent the country in a crowd of more than 1.5 million people.

Today, the U.S. Pavilion is still a landmark in Riverfront Park, though as planned, the skeleton structure of the Pavilion is all that remains. The Pavilion at Riverfront is fun to walk around and tour, and it features festive light shows year-round on the weekends. It also hosts special light performances on most major holidays.

U.S. Pavilion at Riverfront Park

The Pavilion is just the tip of exciting family attractions in Riverfront Park. Nearby, the 1902 Clock Tower is also on display as the last remaining structure from the Great Northern Railroad Depot. Other family attractions include the Looff Carousel , the Numerica Skating Ribbon , and the Providence Playscape . And views of both the upper and lower portions of Spokane Falls are accessible from the park.

The paved 37-mile Centennial Trail leads east and west from the park. Nearby shopping, dining, and unique places to stay, like The Historic Davenport Hotel , are in River Park Square, lining the south side of the park.

Address: 507 N. Howard Street, Spokane, Washington

Manito Park

Manito Park is in the scenic South Hill Neighborhood and has spent the last century cultivating itself as one of the finest botanical gardens in the nation. It comprises five major garden areas, including the notable Nishinomiya Tsutakawa Japanese Garden , and more than 20 acres of blooming flowers on display. These beautiful displays attract over 150,000 visitors a year.

Manito Park also offers 70-plus acres of well-maintained native landscape outside of the specified botanical gardens. Another notable place to visit in the park includes Mirror Pond , with a good chance of spotting some wildlife. The Gaiser Conservatory at the park is a greenhouse that invites year-round visits.

Mirror Pond, Manito Park

Much of the time spent at Manito is at leisure. It's a fun place to bring a blanket and some snacks to enjoy the nice weather of Eastern Washington. Late spring and summer are arguably the best time to visit, when the park is in full bloom. The Traditional Rose Garden is particularly appealing throughout the summer, as is the nearby Lilac Garden .

Address: 1702 S Grand Blvd, Spokane, Washington

Upper Spokane Falls

Spokane Falls is a must-see natural attraction within Riverfront Park . It consists of lower and upper falls and presents a fast-paced and very audible attraction. While both offer dramatic views throughout the year, the best time to see these heavy-flowing falls is spring, when the snowmelt swells the banks of the Spokane River .

The upper falls are accessible with just a short walk from the Pavilion at Riverfront . A pedestrian bridge crosses the river below the falls, offering fantastic views of the rushing water. Expect to encounter photographers and other interested explorers trying to capture the beauty.

Lower Falls

The larger lower falls are on the west side of Riverfront Park, with a few different viewpoints available. One of the most popular areas to appreciate the gravity is the landscaped area known as Huntington Park , below the Washington Water Power building. This park features several steps and a pathway lined with interpretive information.

Another area to get a view of the lower falls is the pedestrian sidewalk atop the adjacent Monroe Street Bridge . The newly installed A Place of Truths plaza , next to the Monroe Street Bridge, also has great viewpoints. And for perhaps the best view, the Numerica SkyRide in Riverfront Park offers gondola-style rides that span the river.

Activities like fishing, white-water kayaking, and swimming are popular in the warmer months at Riverside State Park , while snowshoers and cross-country skiers can be found gliding through the landscape in the winter.

Some of the best camping near Spokane is within the Bowl & Pitcher Area of the park. This scenic area of the park is also home to an iconic short hike that starts at a nearby Suspension Bridge created by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1934.

Suspension Bridge in the Bowl & Pitcher Area

Some of the wildest hiking, however, is found on the trails or dry riverbeds in Deep Creek Canyon unit of the park . The Nine Mile Recreation Area within Riverside State Park offers a boat dock and rentals. The Lake Spokane unit features additional camping and trails close to the water.

The Centennial Trail crossing the Spokane River

The first segments of the Centennial Trail, also known as the Spokane River Centennial National Recreational Trail , were constructed in 1989, the same year as the state of Washington's Centennial Celebration. It has since grown to be nationally recognized and a central point for recreation in Spokane.

This paved trail stretches for 37 miles from either direction out of the downtown Riverfront Park and is open to any non-motorized transportation. Whether you choose running shoes, bicycles, or roller skis, the path delivers a good dose of eastern Washington landscapes.

The Centennial Trail is built upon former railway routes and old timber company land, providing a flat grade to explore the natural sights. The trail takes on more of a rugged landscape for 15 miles west of Riverfront Park. Scenic views line this western portion of the trail until reaching Riverside State Park at the trail's end.

Centennial Trail

East out of downtown Spokane, the trail meanders through the collegial atmosphere of Gonzaga University before traveling 17 miles to the Washington and Idaho border. The trail continues another 24 miles as the North Idaho Centennial Trail west of the border.

Mount Spokane State Park

Mount Spokane State Park encompasses a staggering 13,919 acres and over 100 miles of multi-use trails. And the state park entrance is only an hour north of the city. This proximity caters to weekend camping trips and day activities like mountain biking and wildlife viewing.

Mount Spokane is part of the larger Selkirk Mountain Range and one of the tallest peaks in the Inland Northwest. Two other major mountain summits, Kit Carson and Day Mountain , are also within the state park boundaries. All three summits have hiking trails that lead to the top for spectacular views.

View from Mount Spokane

The Mount Spokane Summit Road is generally open between mid-June and mid-October for those not interested in hiking to the top. The park's limited campsites are also located on Summit Road. At the top, the historic Vista House lives up to its name with an east-facing terrace.

This state park shines with a heavy coat of snow during the winter months. It's home to Mount Spokane Ski and Snowboard Resort, which attracts thousands of downhill enthusiasts each season. And like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, other types of recreation also attract visitors in the winter.

Address: 26107 N. Mt Spokane Park Drive, Mead, Washington

Pumpkins in Green Bluff

This short commute leads to several U-pick and pre-prick opportunities and some of the freshest produce in town. More than 20 farms offer agricultural attractions in Green Bluff, providing year-round reasons to visit.

Summer is certainly one of the most popular times to visit Green Bluff. The fields and orchards are ripe with strawberries, peaches, and pears throughout the hotter months. Apples reign supreme throughout the fall until the pumpkins take over. And in winter, come find your authentic Christmas tree at Green Bluff.

Take some time to explore the Grower Directory before visiting. Several farms dot the countryside of Green Bluff — too many to see in a day. Each farm offers its own seasonal attractions and crops, and each is also independently owned, so hours and seasonal produce vary.

Rocks of Sharon

Several natural spaces surround Spokane. And thanks to efforts by local landowners and non-profit groups, a network of Conservation Areas surrounds the city. Hiking trails line these natural spaces and offer excellent outlets for getting outside. One of the most fun places to explore is the area known as Rocks of Sharon. It's also one of the best hiking trails near Spokane .

The Rocks of Sharon are a collection of large granite outcroppings in an elevated landscape on the south side of the city. The views from these rocks include miles-long overlooks of the gold and green fields of the Palouse. And the views of these gigantic rocks themselves are awe-inspiring due to their stature.

Two main trailheads lend the most accessibility to Rocks of Sharon: The Stevens Creek Trailhead is the shorter route, while the Iller Creek Trailhead offers a longer trek. Both feature ample parking with portable toilets near the parking area. For the adventurous and those with the appropriate gear, these granite slabs also invite rock climbing adventures alongside a rewarding hike.

Address: 9102 S Stevens Creek Road, Spokane, Washington

The Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture , or "The MAC", is the largest cultural institution of its kind in the Inland Northwest. Trail sign at the John A. Finch Arboretum

When visiting, keep an eye out for the resident wildlife that likes to call the arboretum home. Several marmots scurry about the natural space, as well as wild turkeys. Moose have also been known to wander through the area, as well as sizable non-venomous bull snakes. Always keep an appropriate distance when encountering any wildlife.

Address: 3404 W. Woodland Blvd, Spokane, Washington

Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox

The Fox Theater was the first building to have air conditioning in Spokane. The theater premiered its debut movie in 1931 to a star-studded audience and a packed house. Over the next 70 years, the Fox Theater hosted vaudeville performances, silent films, and, eventually, talking films. For this reason, the Fox was outfitted with plenty of stage space and a full orchestra pit.

In 2000, the Fox Theater showed its last movie and was slated to be razed and replaced by a parking garage. A generous contribution by Miss Myrtle Woldson effectively saved the Fox Theater from demolition and helped renovate the space. Today, it remains a defining cultural establishment in Spokane.

The newly named Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox reopened in 2007 and since then has been the home of the Spokane Symphony. Other fine art performances at the theater include operas and ballets. Performances often take place into the evening, providing a top spot for things to do at night.

The Historic Davenport Hotel

The Davenport Hotel is centrally located in downtown Spokane near Riverfront Park . It's a great home base for exploring the rest of the city. And it stands proudly as a testament to the rich history of the area. This hotel is listed on the National Register of Historic Places , and between 1914 and 1985, it set a high bar for luxury accommodations.

Fifteen years after the Davenport Hotel closed for business, new owners took up the task of restoring the hotel to its former grandeur. Renovations not only went into the ritzy interior and feel of the overnight establishment, but efforts were put in place to re-establish the hotel's first-class reputation.

The Historic Davenport Hotel

When the hotel opened its doors again in 2000, restoration of the ornate woodwork and the always-lit central fireplace in the stunning Grand Lobby secured the Davenport Hotel's place in Spokane's community. And the hotel continues its legacy of superior customer service. Check it out for a decadent blast from the past and a luxurious place to spend the night.

Gonzaga University

Gonzaga University sits on a beautiful 150-acre campus on the north side of the Spokane River , a short walk upriver from Riverfront Park . This private liberal arts university was established in 1887 and has become an integral part of the Spokane community.

Alongside educating thousands of students, it also provides several community outlets - including a fun place to stroll. The campus is striking, with a mix of historic brick buildings and sharply designed newer facilities. The Centennial Trail crosses the Spokane River and connects to campus.

The Jundt Art Museum is one campus resource often used by community members, featuring works from across the globe. The McCarthey Athletic Center is also a popular place for students and fans, home to the renowned Gonzaga Bulldogs basketball team.

And Gonzaga isn't the only campus in town. The private Christian Whitworth University also calls Spokane home, as well as the for-profit Carrington College . Eastern Washington University , out of Cheney, also has a campus in Spokane, on the other side of the river from Gonzaga.

St. John's Cathedral

Regardless of religious practices, St. John's Cathedral on 12th avenue in Spokane is quite the sight to see. Construction first began on St. John's Cathedral in 1925, and it remains one of the few examples of classic Gothic architecture in the United States. The church is also well known for its beautiful organ, consisting of over 400 pipes.

While it's possible to admire the pointed arches and ribbed vaults from outside the cathedral, guided tours are available for all patrons Friday, Saturday, and after service on Sunday, so visitors can fully enjoy this architectural attraction. Concerts from the imposing carillon of the cathedral are heard on Sundays before the regularly scheduled 10:30 am service.

Address: 127 East 12th Avenue, Spokane, Washington

Avista Stadium

If you happen to be in the Spokane area between June and September, Avista Stadium should be on the top of your list of fun things to do. As the home ballpark for the minor-league Spokane Indians baseball team, Avista Stadium provides access to America's favorite pastime at an affordable price.

Avista Stadium was built from scratch in under four months in 1958 and has grown and experienced large renovations over the years. If anything has remained the same, it's in the general excitement and summer feel of attending a baseball game.

Special game nights at Avista Stadium include a festive opening night and several fireworks celebrations.

Spokane has several hotels to choose from. A cluster of great hotels are downtown and within walking distance of the city's best attractions. • Another great mid-range hotel is the Hilton Garden Inn Spokane Airport .
  • To the north, the Quality Inn Oakwood provides another budget-friendly place to stay that doesn't skimp on cleanliness and service.

Ready to experience Spokane?

Spokane, Washington

The history of Spokane, Washington dates back thousands of years with its first residents, the Spokane Tribe of Native Americans, who thrived in the area due to its abundant natural resources, like the Spokane River for salmon, plus many forests. In the mid 1800s, white settlers began entering the area. Similar to the Native Americans, the area’s natural resources attracted them. Their arrival was not without conflict and resulted in a loss of land by Native Americans. But by 1873, Spokane was incorporated as a city.  Over the years Spokane has experienced growth and decline with the coming and going of different industries such as the railroad, timber, and mining industries. It even hosted Expo 74 in 1974, a world’s fair also known as the International Exposition on the Environment, which played a big role in revitalizing the city into what it is today.

Spokane Falls

The city is now the second largest in the state of Washington, after Seattle. But has a much different vibe than our former home city. It has a small city vibe, which we love, plus a stronger sense of community. But similar to Seattle, it is loaded with adventurous opportunities right at the city’s doorstep. Including the beautiful Spokane River rushing through downtown, the Centennial Trail that runs all the way to Idaho, Mount Spokane only 45 minutes away, 76 area lakes to enjoy, 5 ski resorts, and so much more! However, Spokane isn’t only about nature, there’s many other things to do in Spokane. The city also boasts several walkable neighborhoods with tons of shopping, restaurants, bars, and coffee shops. Plus multiple universities, and fun annual events.

Spokane is located in eastern Washington, about 3 hours 45 minutes east of Seattle, but just miles from northern Idaho. While the eastern side of Washington is less populated than the western part of Washington, Spokane is still easy to get to, with a major highway through town, plus an international airport!

Before embarking on your adventure, please review the  Leave No Trace principles  to ensure you leave every place better than you found it, so that others can enjoy these beautiful places for many years to come! These seven principles include planning ahead and preparing, hiking and camping on durable surfaces, disposing of waste properly (pack out what you pack in!), understanding campfire rules and always fully extinguishing your fires, respecting wildlife, and being considerate of other visitors.

Flying to Spokane

The Spokane International Airport (GEG) is served by 8 passenger airlines including Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, Southwest, and United. With nonstop flights from 20 destinations in the US like Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Phoenix, Denver, LA, San Francisco, and more.  If you cannot find a flight to GEG that works well for you, we suggest flying into the Seatac (SEA) . Which is the largest airport in the state, and road tripping to Spokane.

Driving to Spokane

Driving to Spokane instead? Spokane is located right on I-90, making it convenient to get to from the east and west for a fun weekend in Spokane! Here is how long you can expect to drive from nearby popular areas:

  • Coeur d’Alene, Idaho : 40 minutes (33 miles)
  • Seattle, Washington : 3.75 hours (279 miles)
  • Glacier National Park : 4.75 hours (272 miles)
  • Portland, Oregon : 5.5 hours (351 miles)
  • Boise, Idaho : 6.5 hours (421 miles)

How to get around Spokane

Once in Spokane, you have some options of how to get around. If you plan to just explore in town, you could get away with Uber or Lyft. But if you want to explore all of the things on our list of things to do in Spokane which are located outside of town (which we highly recommend!), you will want to either have your own car or rent a car .  If visiting in the spring through fall, any type of vehicle will work just fine. But if visiting in the winter, it may be a good idea to have an AWD or 4×4 vehicle. For winter visits, make sure to have chains on you, as some mountain passes may require them. We have these chains for our van (make sure to double check which kind your vehicle will need!), but have never had to use them. As for parking, we had no issues parking our longer Sprinter van downtown! There are many parallel spots on the city streets and there is a spacious parking lot by Riverfront Park that is very affordable too, even during the weekend in Spokane!

Spokane is a true four season city and no matter when you visit, you will have a wide variety of things to do in Spokane. Whether you are planning to spend a week or just a weekend in Spokane, here’s what you can expect during the different seasons!

Visit in the winter for: tons of snow activities! During the winter you’ll experience highs in the 30s and a good amount of snow. The area gets an average of 44 inches of snow per year, which is much more than we thought it did! But the good news is that there are plenty of ways to enjoy winter in Spokane, with 5 ski resorts nearby, plus plenty of snowshoeing and cross country ski routes if you want something a bit less exhilarating.

Manito Park Spokane

Visit in the spring for: wildflowers, raging waterfalls, whitewater rafting, & one of the world’s largest timed road races. Spring in Spokane means that the sun is making more and more appearances, wildflowers are starting to emerge, and the ice and snow begin to melt away. If waterfalls and whitewater rafting are your jam, this is the beginning of the best time of year for both, as both Spokane Falls and the Spokane River are raging from snowmelt. You can expect daytime temperatures to be in the 50s or 60s in the spring, with the evenings still being pretty chilly.

Spokane River Rafting | 13+ FUN things to do in Spokane, Washington! (+ a 3 day itinerary!) | Visiting Spokane, Washington | Things to do in Washington

Summer

Visit in the summer for: snow-free hiking trails, whitewater rafting, and Hoopfest! Summers in Spokane are warm and dry, with lots of sunshine! If you love being outdoors and basking in the sun, this is a wonderful time of year to visit. Early in the summer is still a great time to whitewater raft and admire waterfalls, as water levels are still high, and if you love to hike, you can guarantee snow free trails this time of year. And for the basketball lovers, you’ll for sure want to visit Spokane at the end of June. This is when Hoopfest, a 3-on-3 outdoor basketball tournament (the largest on earth!) occurs. Just a warning though, it can get HOT in Spokane. We drove through a couple summers ago and it was over 100 degrees, which is not ideal van life weather. For some this may be no big deal (and there is plenty of water to cool off in!), but for others, this may be a bit too warm.

Mount Spokane State Park Spokane

Visit in the fall for: fruit picking, fall foliage and festivities, cooler weather, and perfect hiking weather. Fall is our favorite season anywhere we visit and Spokane is no exception. You’ll be treated to highs in the 70s and lows in the 40s. And the fall foliage will be a real highlight of your visit!  We have visited Spokane twice now in September, with the most recent being this past trip, and while we have been a bit too early for fall foliage, we got to enjoy the other amazing things to do in Spokane that Fall has to offer, like fall festivities at Green Bluff, cooler daytime temperatures, and snow-free trails.

Campgrounds

Liberty Lake Regional Park During our most recent visit to check out the best things to do in Spokane, we used Liberty Lake Regional Park as our base camp and it was the perfect spot! Now that you know a little bit more about Spokane, how to get there, and have figured out when you’d like to visit, it’s time to figure out what you’d like to do while in Spokane! Below are over 13 fun things to do in Spokane, Washington, which range from year-round activities, to a few seasonal ones as well!

1. Check out a local coffee shop

Visiting local coffee shops is one of our favorite things to do when we travel. Spokane is loaded with delicious coffee shops sprinkled all around town. Including some that roast their own coffee. If you are spending a weekend in Spokane, try to visit a new one each morning! Some of our favorite coffee shops in Spokane are:

Indaba Coffee Spokane | 13+ FUN things to do in Spokane, Washington! (+ a 3 day itinerary!)

Indaba Coffee

This is a must-visit coffee shop in Spokane! They have several locations, but we love the one downtown , with exposed brick and a nice open interior. If there is only one drink you try at Indaba make it the lemon vanilla latte. The mix of sweet vanilla with the slight tinge of citrus makes for a delicious, refreshing latte combo! Their butterscotch latte is also heavenly!

Spokane Coffee Shops | 13+ FUN things to do in Spokane, Washington! (+ a 3 day itinerary!)

Ladder Coffee

Ladder Coffee is another local roaster in Spokane, with a few locations in the area. We visited their Brownes Addition location and it is a beautiful spot! The interior is bright, airy, and filled with tons of plants. Their lattes are delicious and so are their breakfast items. We tried their breakfast sandwich and avocado toast and both were phenomenal!

Evans Brothers Coffee Spokane

Evans Brothers Coffee

Evans Brothers Coffee is a coffee roaster from Northern Idaho, but they now have a location in Spokane as well, inside of The Wonder Building, a historic brick building transformed into an artisan food hall. We tried an americano, a caramel latte, plus a seasonal drink and all were top notch!

Other coffee shops

We unfortunately didn’t have time to try every coffee shop in Spokane (we wish!), but a couple on our list for next time are First Avenue Coffee and Atticus Coffee & Gifts ! No matter how many you get time to visit, this is a must do on our list of things to do in Spokane!

2. Visit Spokane Falls

Spokane Falls | Things to do in Spokane

If you only do one thing in Spokane, it MUST be Spokane Falls! Luckily, this waterfall couldn’t be any easier to visit as it sits right in the middle of downtown! We are huge waterfall lovers and it always amazes us when there are waterfalls in an urban area. And Spokane Falls happens to be the largest urban waterfall in the United States! But the falls are more than just beautiful to look at, they also hold quite a bit of significance! These falls were a sacred place for Native Americans, who would come to the falls to fish for salmon and have celebrations. And in more recent years, the power of the falls has been used to provide electricity via hydroelectric dams.

Spokane Falls | Things to do in Spokane

Even though the falls are flowing year round, depending on the time of year you visit they will be flowing at different rates. March through June will provide peak roaring falls from snow melt, while the other months will have less water, but will expose the basalt rock formations that create the falls. There are a handful of places to view the falls and we suggest checking out all viewpoints to see the falls from different perspectives! We’ve included some of the different spots in our list of things to do in Spokane below!

3. Explore Riverfront Park

Spokane Riverfront Park | 13+ FUN things to do in Spokane, Washington! (+ a 3 day itinerary!)

What was once an old rail yard, was then cleaned up to be the site of Expo ‘74, and is now the jewel of downtown Spokane. Riverfront Park not only boasts rich history, but it’s also a beautiful setting, with the Spokane River running right through it, plus the famous Spokane Falls. Those of all ages will find tons to do here in the park! Here are some of our favorite spots:

The Childhood Express Red Wagon

Riverfront Park | Things to do in Spokane

A giant 12 foot high, 12 foot wide, and 27 foot long red Radio Flyer wagon…what more could you ask for?! Not only is this red wagon super cool to just admire, but you can also climb up into the wagon and slide down the slide! It may be used mostly by kids, but don’t tell us that! We slid down the slide probably 20 times when we visited…and we giggled like little kids every single time! One thing we missed during our visit is that underneath the wagon are monkey bars! So if you want to swing around as well, give ‘em a try!

Riverfront Park | Things to do in Spokane

Garbage Goat

Nestled in a little nook of Riverfront Park is a goat sculpture. But it isn’t just any goat sculpture, it has magical powers…it can eat trash! Built for the 74 World’s Fair Expo, with the push of a button this goat vacuums small pieces of trash right out of your hand in an instant.  Throwing away trash has never been so much fun! We were scrounging through our backpack looking for more trash to feed it! We never thought we would include “throwing trash away” on a list of things to do in Spokane, but it definitely is a must!

Riverfront Park | Things to do in Spokane

The Clocktower

You can’t miss seeing The Clocktower while in Riverfront Park. This tower is an iconic feature of not only the park, but also the city of Spokane. Like many cities, railroads played a big role in growing Spokane into what it is today. And right where The Clocktower stands is where the Great Northern Railroad station used to be. While the station was torn down in the 1970s for Expo ’74, the tower still stands tall and is a good reminder of Spokane’s history.

Spokane Falls SkyRide | 13+ FUN things to do in Spokane, Washington! (+ a 3 day itinerary!)

Numerica SkyRide

Not only can you walk around to different viewpoints to admire Spokane Falls, the Spokane River, and Riverfront Park, but you can also see it all from above by riding the SkyRide! The SkyRide originally was created for Expo ‘74 and has been updated since, but still provides a fun way to see the area. Starting from Riverfront Park, the 15 minute ride in the enclosed cabin floats down 200 feet across the Spokane River in front of Spokane Falls, then under the Monroe Street Bridge before retracing its cable back to where you started. It costs $10.95 per adult, but cheaper for kids, and tickets can be purchased online or at the SkyRide. It’s one of the great family friendly things to do in Spokane!

Riverfront Park | Things to do in Spokane

Looff Carousel

Another one of the best family friendly things to do in Spokane is to ride the Loof Carousel. The Looff Carousel in Riverfront Park was built in 1909 and is one of America’s most well preserved hand-carved wooden carousels. It has been in Spokane for its entire existence and all of the original figures, including 54 horses, 1 giraffe, 1 tiger, and 2 chariot benches are still in operation! It costs $3 for a single ride or $7 for an all day pass and is great for both kids and the kids at heart!

4. Eat at a local restaurant

Spokane is home to tons of great local restaurants, with any kind of cuisine imaginable! During our weekend in Spokane we tried out quite a few spots and loved them all! Here is a quick rundown of each spot:

Cochinito Spokane

Cochinito Taqueria

Our things to do in Spokane list would not be complete without delicious food! Tacos are hands down our favorite food (I mean we spent 5 days in Mexico City solely to eat tacos) and Cochinito Taqueria is one of the best taco shops we have been to! First off, the space itself is beautiful, with a gorgeous mural and tons of color. But then you have the food. We started with delicious aguas frescas and their queso fundido, which we expected to be like a traditional queso fundido, but it was more like Tex-Mex queso (our FAVORITE)! We have had a LOT of queso in our lives and have very high queso standards and this is in the top 3 we have EVER had! These are chef crafted tacos, so they have some unique ingredients and flavors, beautiful presentation, and are very high quality. We tried the pork belly, 20 hour carne asada, pescado, and carnitas and all were AMAZING! The pork belly may have been one of my top 3 tacos of all time. Their tacos do change often, so check their current menu here ! The manager we chatted with also said she loves the lamb one!

The Flying Goat Spokane

The Flying Goat

We tried two spots with pizza during our time in Spokane, including The Flying Goat ! This spot is close to Riverside State Park (more on there soon!) and has a great outdoor patio, plus unique pizza choices. We got the South Hill, which was like an elevated cheese pizza with prosciutto and truffle oil arugula, as well as the Fairview, which had gorgonzola, back bacon, and pears. We also tried their Devils Toenail Wings and Roskelley Dumplings, which are fried dough with sausage, roasted jalapeno, and goat cheese inside. It was served with pesto and was SO good!

Versalia Pizza

We also had pizza from Versalia and it was SOLID! It is wood-fired and has that fluffy, but slightly chewy crust, and delicious sauce and topping choices. We loved the Pepe Sal! Versalia is also located in Kendall Yards, a super nice, walkable area right by downtown, the river, and a walking path and if you choose to eat in, you can sit on their outdoor patio with amazing views of the city!

Wonder Building Spokane

Wonder Building

The Wonder Building is the former Wonder Bread building, which has since been transformed into an artisan food hall. And if you know us, you know food halls will always make it on our list of things to do in Spokane and everywhere else we go! The market highlights a mix of delicious foods, like Uno Más Tacos, Victory Burger, and a coffee bar by Evans Brothers Coffee. If you’re with a group and are unsure where to eat, this is a good spot!

The Scoop- Spokane Restaurants

Y’all know we love us some ice cream, so we had to check out a local ice cream shop while in Spokane! The Scoop is tucked into a gorgeous neighborhood, with beautiful homes and an overlook down the road, and has delicious homemade ice cream. Their flavors seem to change often, but we loved the pumpkin, salted caramel, and banana pudding! They also have a location in Kendall Yards, but it was closed during our visit!

Mary Lou's Milk Bottle Spokane | 13+ FUN things to do in Spokane, Washington! (+ a 3 day itinerary!)

Mary Lou’s Milk Bottle

Quite possibly the most unique place to eat in Spokane is Mary Lou’s Milk Bottle . This restaurant is in a giant milk bottle, which used to be the old Benewah Creamery store in 1935! The inside has a fun retro vibe and we loved their burgers, fries, and huckleberry milkshake (a MUST in the Pacific Northwest)!

Rockwood Bakery

Rockwood Bakery is tucked into a residential area, with charming homes and tons of trees, and feels like a hidden local gem. And it has ridiculously good pastries! We tried a ham and cheese croissant (make sure to get it warmed up) and a lemon white chocolate scone and both were delicious. But what makes Rockwood Bakery even better is how close they are located to Manito Park. Grabbing coffee and some breakfast, then walking to the park, makes for a perfect morning during your weekend in Spokane!

Local suggestions

There are tons of other restaurants we didn’t have time for and some suggestions for our things to do in Spokane list that we got from locals are: The Yards Bruncheon , Zona Blanca , Italia Trattoria , Baba , Frank’s Diner (in a train car!), Sushi.com , and Taco Vado .

5. Visit Manito Park

Manito Park Spokane

Just south of downtown Spokane is Manito Park, which is considered the Crown Jewel of Spokane City Parks. Here you’ll find 78 acres that include five major garden areas, including a perennial garden, rose garden, lilac garden, Japanese garden, and a classic European Renaissance style garden. Plus a pond, conservatory, playground, and cafe!  Manito Park is free to visit and you could easily spend a half a day or full day just wandering around its gardens. Our favorite was the Duncan Garden, which is the European Renaissance style garden, and has tons of color and symmetry. This spot is easily the most beautiful location on our things to do in Spokane list!

6. Hike at Riverside State Park

Riverside State Park Spokane

Riverside State Park is another MUST do when enjoying a weekend in Spokane! This is the largest state park in Washington and is only 6.5 miles from downtown Spokane, but feels like a world away! Here you can find relaxing forests, beautiful trails and recreation options, and the gorgeous Spokane River. Below are some suggestions of things to do in the park!

Note: Similar to all Washington State Parks, Riverside State Park does require a Discover Pass , which you can buy in advance or at a nearby retailer . This pass is $11.50 per day or $35 for the year!

Riverside State Park Spokane

Bowl and Pitcher Area

While there are multiple areas of the park to visit, the most popular is Bowl and Pitcher , which is where we went! This area is known for its rock formations that jut out of the river, with rapids rushing around them.  You can view the Bowl and Pitcher from an overlook right by the parking area. But if you want to get a little bit of exercise, you can also hike the Bowl and Pitcher Loop Trail , which is a short 2.1 miles with very little elevation gain. The trail starts by crossing the iconic swinging bridge, before providing views of the namesake Bowl and Pitcher rock formations, following along the Spokane River, and then looping back through the beautiful forest. It’s also a great trail to hike in Washington in the winter !

Want to get 30% off an AllTrails+ membership ? Use our code aplusk30 (you must redeem this code on the website, not the app)! We use AllTrails+ on every single hike and it is the most helpful hiking tool out there! Some of the features we love are offline maps (so we can navigate even without cell service), wrong-turn alerts, and its 3D maps feature, so we can get a feel for trails before we hike.

Riverside State Park Spokane

Trail 25 and the Centennial Trail

If you want even more miles, hike Trail 25 and the Centennial Trail ! This trail takes you across the suspension bridge and along the river, before connecting with the Centennial Trail, which is a 40 mile trail that will take you from Spokane all the way to Idaho! Part of this hike is paved, but don’t think that means it has zero views! On the paved portion we had a great view of downtown, plus views looking down on the river.

Nine Mile Recreation Area

Other popular areas of the park include the Nine Mile Recreation Area , where you’ll find tons of climbing and hiking opportunities. The Knothead Valley Loop and Painted Rock Loop is a popular hiking choice in this part of the park!

7. Explore Mount Spokane State Park

Mount Spokane | 13+ FUN things to do in Spokane, Washington! (+ a 3 day itinerary!)

Another top things to do in Spokane is visit Mount Spokane State Park ! This is the second largest state park in Washington and is located 45 minutes northeast of Spokane. With over 100 miles of trails, many of which can be used year round, there is no shortage of things to do at Mount Spokane! The winter brings 300 inches of snow, which turns the park into a winter wonderland, with activities for skiers, snowshoers, cross country skiers, and snowmobiles, and huts to help warm you up. In the spring, summer, and fall, these trails are perfect for hiking, leading you to spots with amazing views of the surrounding area! And if mountain biking or horse riding is your thing, there are up to 100 miles open for those activities as well.  Here’s a more in depth rundown of what all you can experience at Mount Spokane!

Note: The Discover Pass is required at Mount Spokane State Park, which you can buy in advance or at a nearby retailer . This pass is $11.50 per day or $35 for the year!

Mount Spokane Ski and Snowboard Park

For some of the best skiing and snowboarding terrain in the area, you won’t have to look further than Mount Spokane State Park. Spokanites have been skiing here since the 1930s! And with 52 runs, 6 chairlifts, and a ski school for both kids and adults, Mount Spokane has your winter activities covered. Winter gear, including cross country skis and snowshoes, can be rented or purchased at Fit Fanatics in the parking lot of the Selkirk Lodge from December 1 to March 31.

Mount Spokane State Park Spokane

See the sunrise or sunset at the Vista House

The Vista House is a stone building built in the 1930s using granite from the nearby hills so that hikers could admire the amazing views from the top and also to be used as a fire lookout. While the fire lookout is no longer in operation, the house still stands to provide a shelter for explorers (checkout the fireplace inside!) and show off some of the best views in the area. From the top you have almost 360 degree views of the entire area, including many mountains and some lakes. It is a stunning view regardless of the time of day, but it was extremely magical at sunset, when the sky and mountains turned shades of purple, pink, and orange. We hear that it is incredible at sunrise too!

Pro tip: We took a charcuterie board from Wanderlust Delicato up to the Vista House for sunset and it made for the perfect snack!

Mount Spokane State Park Spokane

Hike to amazing views!

There are 100 miles of hiking trails in Mount Spokane, many of which connect with each other. You could spend months trying new hike variations! But if you’re looking for a cool endpoint to hike to, look no further than the Quartz Mountain Fire Lookout . This fire lookout is located in the middle of a Nordic Ski trail system at Mount Spokane State Park. And it is the third highest summit in the park at 5,129 feet! it’s a great hike in Washington you should add to your list! You can take a forest road both ways, which is about a 4.5 mile hike (with 685 feet of elevation gain). Or you can mix and match nordic trails to create your own adventure, which is what we did! We took a handful of nordic trails to the top (while well marked, we recommend having AllTrails offline maps downloaded to ensure you don’t get turned around) and then the forest road down.  Along the way you can pick huckleberries (we didn’t see any in September 😔) and you’ll be able to swing by the Nova Hut. This is a hut that can be used all year long for a nice lunch break. But it would maybe be the most fun during the winter time when you can use the wood burning stove! When you get to the summit you’ll get to see a cool fire lookout (which you can stay in…more on that below!) and have about 270 degree views of the Spokane Valley, Idaho, and even Canada! Another popular hike to check out is the Mount Kit Carson Trail . We hope to do this one next time!

Mount Spokane State Park Quartz Mountain Fire Lookout

Stay in a fire lookout!

Want to stay the night at Mount Spokane State Park? It doesn’t get any cooler than staying in the Quartz Mountain Fire Lookout ! This fire lookout can be rented for a two night minimum, which ranges from $79-$99 per night. It has a propane stove, two beds, a restroom below, sweeping views, and more!  Make sure to plan in advance if you’d like to stay here, it books up quickly!

8. Explore more of the area’s trails

Beyond Mount Spokane State Park and Riverside State Park, there are so many other hiking areas in and near Spokane! If you have more than just a weekend in Spokane, plan to check some of these out too! A few more that we enjoyed during our visit were:

Dishman Hills Spokane | 13+ FUN things to do in Spokane, Washington! (+ a 3 day itinerary!)

Dishman Hills Natural Area

This 3,200 acres of protected land is just east of downtown. And it has some great trails, with really nice views of the area! We hiked part of the Nimbus Knob, Goldback, and Pond Loop . The views from the Nimbus Knob area were amazing! Another hike that looks awesome in the area is the Rocks of Sharon Trail and has some really neat rocks!

Centennial Trail Spokane, Washington

Hike or bike the Centennial Trail

The Centennial Trail is an over 60 mile trail that runs from just west of Spokane, along the river, through downtown, and across the Idaho border, continuing to Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. About 40 miles of the trail is in Washington and is a fun way to experience Spokane by foot or bike! There are various trailheads to get on the trail. But if you only have time for a little bit, we highly suggest the portion near downtown and the Kendall Yards (miles 20-23). This stretch gives you great views of downtown, plus has lots of dining options you can bike or walk to (like Versalia Pizza that we mentioned earlier)!

Note: Some trailheads for the Centennial Trail are in Riverside State Park and will require a Discover Pass to park.

Liberty Lake Regional Park

While camping at Liberty Lake Regional Park, we made sure to explore the park by foot too! We hiked the 8.5 mile Liberty Lake Loop Trail , which gains almost 1,400 feet of elevation and we sure felt it at times! We did the hike clockwise and started in a forest, which goes along a creek, before entering a beautiful cedar grove, getting a view of the lake below and mountains in the distance, gaining some good elevation, and reaching some small waterfalls.

Note: This park has a $2 per person entry fee and does NOT accept the Discover Pass.

Liberty Lake | 13+ FUN things to do in Spokane, Washington! (+ a 3 day itinerary!)

9. Get out on the Spokane River

One of our favorite things we did during our weekend in Spokane was rafting on the Spokane River! We went on a 2 hour scenic float with Wiley E. Waters and it was an absolute blast. Although we went later in the season, when the water was calmer, there were still some small rapids (appropriately named “splash and giggle”) that made for the perfect amount of thrill. We even got to “ride the bull,” where we sat on the front of the raft as we went over some rapids and Adam also went for a little swim! If you want an exhilarating ride, make sure to visit between April and early July. But even if you visit when we did, you’re guaranteed to have a great time!

Spokane River Rafting | 13+ FUN things to do in Spokane, Washington! (+ a 3 day itinerary!) | Visiting Spokane, Washington | Things to do in Washington

10. Enjoy the snow!

As we mentioned earlier, Spokane is close to FIVE different ski areas, including Mount Spokane , which we shared about a little bit ago, 49 Degrees North , Silver Mountain Resort (Northern Idaho), Schweitzer Mountain (Northern Idaho), and Lookout Pass (Idaho and Montana). Each one offers a variety of snow activities, all with epic views of the mountains! We definitely want to return to Spokane in the winter to take advantage of all of the winter recreation!

Green Bluff Washington | Walters Fruit Ranch

11. Visit the Green Bluff Farms

About 30 minutes north of Spokane is an area known as Green Bluff, which is home to more than 30 different farms all packed into 12 square miles, making it the largest concentration of farms in a relatively small area in the United States. There are two loops, the West and East, that are filled with farms that offer you-pick orchards, pre-picked fruits and vegetables, fresh baked goods, savory goodies, farm activities, beers and other boozy drinks, and tons of fun for the whole family. Some of these farms have been here for over 100 years and have been enjoyed by families for generations. Each farm offers different products and experiences and while some are open to visit year round, May-December will offer the most amount of products and activities. We especially recommend going in the fall, when many farms host fun fall festivities. You can check the Green Bluff Growers Association website to learn about each farm, what will be in season when you visit, and see hours and activities! And if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the choices, we have really enjoyed Walters Fruit Ranch and Hidden Acres Orchards while visiting Spokane.

12. Shop local!

Living in a van means that we often don’t shop, since we can’t own many things, but if there was a city that tempted us, it was Spokane! Spokane has all of the major retailers you can think of, but what makes the Spokane shopping scene extra special is all of the local, thrift, and vintage shops.  If you are big into vintage design, you must check out Vintage Print & Neon ! We stumbled upon this place and it is the COOLEST store ever! The owner designs these amazing vintage designs, ranging from local Spokane icons to national parks, and then puts them on shirts and posters. You can even come in and print your shirt on their shirt printing machines! If you like to go antique shopping, our friends The Mandagies who live in Spokane highly recommended Teleport Vintage and Boulevard Mercantile for vintage finds. A few other stores that were recommended to us and look really fun and neat to visit are Boo Radley’s , Auntie’s Bookstore , Uncle’s Games , and Atticus Coffee & Gifts .

13. Go to a festival

Spokane has some pretty rad annual events that if you happen to be in town for (or want to make a special trip for), you’re in for a treat! To see all events in Spokane, check out Visit Spokane’s events page , but here are a few that we hear are especially fun!

Hoopfest (June)

Spokane is nicknamed Hooptown USA and every year in June they host the annual Hoopfest , which is the largest 3 on 3 basketball tournament in the world! During this event, there are over 6,000 teams and over 225,000 fans on 425 courts fanned out across 45 city blocks. Even if you aren’t a huge basketball fan, the energy of this event will be a blast and there is also shopping, food, and entertainment to keep you busy! During your visit you’ll likely notice many of the basketball courts sprinkled around town. Some have been painted and decorated with some really neat designs, so even if you don’t visit for the event, you’ll still be able to see evidence of it!

Pig Out in the Park (around Labor Day)

For the food lovers out there, Pig Out in the Park is a must! Every year around Labor Day, Spokane puts on a 6 day food + music festival, with over 50 food booths, adult beverage gardens, and 112 free concerts, plus tons of other market booths…all in Riverfront Park! This event has been happening for 4 decades now, with different names throughout the years, but is a go-to event for locals to celebrate the end of summer!

Bloomsday (May)

Every year on the first Sunday of May, Spokane puts on the Lilac Bloomsday Run (fun fact: Spokane is nicknamed the Lilac City!), which is a 12K, with shorter options as well. This race gets 50,000 participants, making it one of the world’s largest timed road races.

14. Take a daytrip to Idaho

Riding the Route of the Hiawatha Trail in Idaho, Hiawatha Trail, Hiawatha Bike Trail, Best bike trails in the US, Bike trails in Idaho, Where to mountain bike in Idaho, Rail to Trail Idaho, Route of the Hiawatha trail bike rentals, Route of the Hiawatha trail cost, Route of the Hiawatha trail map, Things to do in Wallace Idaho, Things to do in Coeur D’Alene Idaho, Things to do in Idaho

Another huge perk of Spokane is how close it is to so many other amazing places! Within minutes you can be in Northern Idaho and one of our favorite things we’ve done in Idaho is ride a bike on the Route of the Hiawatha, which is around a 1.5 hour drive (one way) from Spokane.

This bike trail starts Montana and crosses into Idaho on an old rail bed converted to a bike path. You’ll glide down the trail through the Bitterroot Mountains on old trestles and through tunnels. It is a BLAST!

Want to learn more about this rail trail? Check out our full guide about the Route of the Hiawatha or our Route of the Hiawatha guide !

On your way to the Route of the Hiawatha, make sure to swing by the charming small town of Wallace, which is a historic mining town. We also suggest visiting Coeur d’Alene, right on Lake Coeur d’Alene! This is a beautiful area and while we haven’t spent much time there, we have always wanted to hike the Mineral Ridge Trail .

The Ultimate Guide To Beautiful Spokane, Washington

  • Destinations
  • United States

While Seattle may be the star of Washington tourism, Spokane shines brightly, as well. Home to the world’s fair in 1974, Spokane offers visitors an opportunity to explore history, nature, and unique attractions while enjoying a delicious culinary scene.

Here are seven ways to enjoy a wonderful visit to Spokane.

The Numerica Skyride in Spokane, Washington.

Things To Do In Spokane

Ride a gondola above the city.

Enjoy amazing views of downtown Spokane and the Spokane River as you ride the Numerica SkyRide on a loop from Riverfront Park past the largest urban waterfalls in the United States. Named one of the most-scenic gondola rides in the country, the Numerica SkyRide takes you across the powerful Spokane River, with the upper and lower waterfalls flowing below you, along downtown Spokane, where you’ll view impressive architecture, such as city hall with its art deco design. The ride drops about 200 feet while taking you over Huntington Park , which has breathtaking views of the river and falls. The best time to ride the gondola is March through June, when the waterfalls are most powerful.

Explore Riverfront Park

Site of the 1974 World’s Fair, the former rail yard eventually became Riverfront Park in 1978. It includes more than 100 acres of attractions, such as public art sculptures, a clock tower that’s more than 100 years old and was once part of the Great Northern Railroad Depot, and an ice-skating ribbon. Among the most popular attractions at Riverfront Park is the Looff Carousel , a century-old carousel featuring wood-carved horses and dragons. You’ll want to bring some scratch paper to feed the mechanical Garbage Goat, a park fixture that helps keep the park clean by chomping recyclables when you press its button and hold paper near its mouth.

Learn About Spokane’s History At The MAC

The Northwest Museum of Art and Culture (MAC) features the largest collection of Plateau Indian art and artifacts in the world, as well as the largest collection of art and culture in the Inland Northwest. The Smithsonian affiliate shares the stories and history of the region through art, memorabilia, and special exhibits. You’ll find more than 2,000 art pieces covering the 19th and 20th centuries, from classical works to contemporary art. During your visit, check out the 1898 Campbell House , a 13,000-square-foot home designed by local architect Kirtland Cutter, which features a look at life in Spokane in the early 1900s.

Bing Crosby’s Childhood Home in Spokane, Washington.

Gonzaga University

Visit Bing Crosby’s Childhood Home

Everyone remembers crooner Bing Crosby each Christmas. From White Christmas to his duet of Little Drummer Boy and Peace on Earth with David Bowie, Bing Crosby is synonymous with Christmas. But the Spokane native also appeared in more than 100 movies and television shows, including several holiday specials. He recorded 106 albums and more than 400 songs. You can tour the Bing Crosby House Museum on the campus of Gonzaga University. His childhood home features more than 200 Crosby artifacts and memorabilia, including his 1945 Academy Award for Going My Way .

Kayak Spokane River

Rent a kayak at a Spokane outfitter like Fun Unlimited and test your skills against the Spokane River rapids or enjoy a more leisurely outing along the calmer areas of the river. Beginning a short distance downriver from the lower falls, the Spokane River features an eight-mile run through a canyon and Riverside State Park, offering some white water rapids or calmer water excursions during the summer.

Take A Hike Along Centennial Trail

Enjoy nature during a hike along the Spokane River Centennial State Park Trail . Following the Spokane River, the Centennial Trail covers nearly 40 miles from Nine Mile Recreation Area at Lake Spokane to the Idaho border. You’ll traverse bridges and trestles over the river, along the turquoise waters of Riverside State Park , through downtown Spokane, and through nature and urban areas as you approach Idaho. The Centennial Trail eventually connects to the North Idaho Centennial Trail. Along the way, you’ll see unique attractions, such as the remnants of a Civilian Conservation Corps camp from the Depression era (1929-39), the Great Northern Railroad clock tower, and Deep Creek Canyon, site of a fossil bed excavated by Washington State University anthropologists.

As people look to recycle and reuse more items today, Spokane is perfect for antique browsing. Located in the former Unite Hillyard Bank, the United Hillyard Antique Mall features more than 2,000 square feet of vintage gold. Frequently asked questions

  • The trick to having a pain-free flight experience is to be prepared. Start with the essentials: passport, boarding pass, cash and any vital medications. Next, bring items that’ll help keep you busy, like your laptop or a good book. It’s also a wise idea to pack your chargers, a quality neck pillow and a pair of noise-canceling headphones. Finally, don’t forget to pop in toiletries like a toothbrush, facial wipes and a clean T-shirt.
  • Squeeze all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and conditioner in your checked baggage. Any liquids in your carry-on suitcase larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) will be confiscated. Pointed or sharp objects, like your beloved pocket knife, and dangerous goods which are explosive or flammable, such as aerosol cans, spray paint and strong acids, are also banned.
  • The answer to a comfortable flight often lies in your choice of clothing. Prepare for temperature changes by bringing layers. This will keep you nice and warm if the cabin starts to cool down. Shoes like high heels and sandals are best left in your suitcase. Instead, opt for flat, closed-toed footwear like slip-ons. Your feet will thank you later.
  • Most travelers are aware of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a blood clotting condition caused by reduced mobility or inactivity. There are plenty of ways to mitigate your risk. Wear a pair of compression tights or socks, drink plenty of water and keep your legs and feet moving. Walk the aisles of the cabin or perform some simple exercises in your seat.
  • Be sure to have your ID and boarding pass at hand. They’re the first items you’ll be asked for by security.
  • Next up, both you and your hand luggage will be X-rayed. To speed things up, take off anything that is likely to trigger the alarm. Personal belongings such as your belt, coat and headphones will be required to go through the machine.
  • For just a few moments, you’ll need to unplug from the digital world. Your phone, laptop and any other electronic devices will also need to be sent through the scanner.
  • Traveling with a new hand cream? As long as it’s in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and it’s stored in a clear zip-close bag, you can keep it with you in your carry-on luggage.
  • There’s a possibility that you’ll be required to take your shoes off to be X-rayed, so wearing slip-on shoes is always a wise idea.
  • Take all prohibited items out of your carry-on bag. If you have any sharp objects like a pocket knife or tools, pack them in your checked suitcase. They won’t be allowed in the cabin.

Unlike some cities, Spokane remains alive with excitement throughout the year. Sure, some cities hibernate in winter, but Spokane relishes the snow. In fact, winter is a popular time in this city , which offers plenty of skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding opportunities on the nearby slopes. The same trails that act as a playground for winter-sport enthusiasts transform into hiking havens when the heat of summer sets in. To help out those planning a trip, this ultimate travel guide to Spokane shares helpful information on everything a traveler needs to know to plan the perfect vacation.

The Spokane River crosses through Spokane and is a major attraction in the city. However, because of this river, the Riverfront Park has grown to be a popular place to visit in the city.

The river has also endowed the city with the majestic Spokane Falls, one of the most beautiful falls in the state , which has the title of the largest urban waterfall in the U.S. and is visible from Riverfront Park among other viewpoints in the city (more on these later).

The falls are mightiest in spring when the mountain snow thaws and runs off into the river. May, in particular, is a good time to check out the waterfall at its peak, although it’s still a wondrous sight whatever time of year one visits.

Washington's forests are also some of the most noteworthy in the world , though the waterfalls may be the main attraction.

The best time to visit Spokane is in summer when the weather is warm and ideal for exploring the numerous natural attractions in and near the city. Still, this city offers a lot to do throughout the year, and the time a tourist visits should depend on their preferred activities.

Winter (December to February)

Winters are quite chilly in Spokane, with temperatures ranging between 27 and 40 degrees Fahrenheit (-3 and 5 degrees Celsius). The area gets about 44 inches of snow each year, so the nearby ski resorts receive a lot of visitors during this time.

This is also a good time to visit for those who love ice skating, which is offered at Riverfront Park. Lovers of sledding and snow-tubing should also consider visiting in winter.

Visitors can expect some sunny days in this season, although the temperatures remain low.

Summer (June to August)

The impressive tower has clock faces on each side that measure 9 feet across. To keep the time, the clock must be wound every week with a hand crank!

Looff Carrousel

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Riverfront Park Carousel was built by Chalres Looff in 1909. The ride was originally placed at Natatorium Park, but was relocated to Riverfront Park in 1975.

More Things To Do in Spokane, WA

Walking Bridge across Spokane Falls, Spokane, WA

We have highlighted our favorite things to do in Spokane, Washington – but there is actually a lot more to discover. While we did not get to partake in these Spokane activities, they came highly recommended from locals.

Antiques and Thrifting in Spokane

Shopping in Spokane is not limited to the sleek River Park Square. As a matter of fact, one of the fun things to do in Spokane is to scavenge for vintage goods at thrift shops and antique stores. We were told that one of the best places for thrifting is at Boulevard Mercantile. Here they sell everything from mid-century home furnishings to repurposed products made by locals.

Perry District

Another historic neighborhood in Spokane (that originated under the name Grant Park Addition), Perry District is a small community that has gained favor as a foodie district. Rather than mansions, the charming streets in Perry District are lined with Craftsman-style bungalows and the main thoroughfare features fantastic places to eat and drink. Perry Street Brewing and The Lantern Tap House both get rave reviews.

Spokane Coffee Culture

In Spokane, the coffee culture is as strong as the coffee itself. Throughout Spokane, there are numerous coffee shops that brew locally roasted coffee and craft exceptional caffeinated beverages. In addition to the many drive-thru coffee stands (a unique PNW experience), there are several chic coffee shops. Try First Avenue Coffee!

Spokane Restaurants

We mentioned a few of our favorite places to eat in Spokane, but there are many excellent eating establishments in the city. We are highlighting a few of the best restaurants in Spokane that you might want to add to your Things To Do in Spokane list.

Anthony’s at Spokane Falls

A well-known (and much loved) seafood brand in the Pacific Northwest, Anthony’s at Spokane Falls has long been a favorite restaurant for upscale dining in the city. With a prominent location overlooking the falls, the backdrop is ideal for a quality seafood dining experience.

Clinkerdagger

A mainstay on the Spokane restaurant scene since 1974, Clinkerdagger specializes in steaks and seafood. Located in a historic flour mill on the banks of the Spokane River, eating at Clinkerdagger on date night is one of the romantic things to do in Spokane.

Wild Sage Bistro

An American bistro in downtown Spokane, Wild Sage offers a comfortable dining experience that gets high praise for its culinary creations.

Mizuna Restaurant and Wine Bar

An excellent option for vegetarians and vegans, but a solid spot for carnivores, as well. Mizuna Restaurant serves a range of fare for all and has a nice wine list, too!

Things To Do Near Spokane, WA

Fountain in Manito Park, Spokane, WA

We are highlighting a few of the best things to do around Spokane, Washington for visitors who have a car.

Arbor Crest Wine Cellars at Riblet Mansion

One of the best things to do in Spokane Valley is to spend an afternoon at the Arbor Crest Estate. At the Arbor Crest Wine Cellars, tastings, tours and dining are all on offer in an extraordinary setting.

The nearby Latah Creek Winery is another excellent option for wine lovers. Offering affordable wine tastings, a stop at Latah Creek Wine Cellars is one of the fabulously fun and cheap things to do in Spokane.

Green Bluff Growers

Green Bluff Growers is a conglomeration of independent local farms dedicated to providing a true country experience to visitors. Guests are invited to pick-your-own in-season produce, feast on homemade pies and sample local wine. All of which are some of the best activities to do in Spokane!

Situated just 15 minutes north in the foothills of Mount Spokane, Green Bluff Growers celebrates events throughout the year. Popular festivals include May Blooms, July Cherry Pickers and October Apple Harvest, so be sure to check out their calendar during your visit.

Spokane Indians Minor League Baseball

Baseball fans looking for Fun Things To Do Spokane can cheer on the local team at Avista Stadium. A minor league affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, the Spokane Indians Baseball Team plays games during the summer months. Their schedule features fun family promotions and pet friendly games, too!

Row Adventure Center

Highly rated as one of the best things to do in Spokane, WA for outdoor enthusiasts, Row Adventure Center organizes and leads thrilling tours in the great outdoors.

Some of the top Spokane tours are whitewater rafting, kayaking and fishing. Row Adventure will organize your half-day or multi-day trip. They also help visitors plan fun activities in Spokane, like biking and hiking tours.

Hiking Near Spokane, WA

The nature surrounding Spokane is absolutely gorgeous. With that, there are ample opportunities for hiking and biking in the many regional parks.

Some of the best hikes for fun in Spokane are at Riverside State Park (and Nine Mile Recreation Area) and Little Spokane River Natural Area (and Indian Painted Rocks). Hiking in those parks, however, requires a Discovery Pass.

Closer to the city – and free – is Palisades Parks, where the Rimrock Drive Trail offers fantastic views.

Mount Spokane State Park

Mt. Spokane State Park is one of the largest state parks in Washington with plenty of year-round activities to enjoy! Located just 30 miles northeast of Spokane, visitors can easily drive to the park for a day of fun.

Hiking, mountain biking, Nordic skiing and snowshoeing are just a few of the fun things to do within the park’s boundaries. The historic Vista House, which offers stunning panoramic views from the summit of Mt. Spokane, is a top destination.

Top 3 airlines serving from seattle to spokane.

Same as the earlier flight. Bad boarding practices, uncomfortable seats, and no Wi-Fi service.

Everything was good. One of the flight attendants was not very friendly

Text and wifi were paywalled. I'm not looking for something fast, but not getting a text for ride coordination until back at the gate was a pain.

It was not a great flight. There was a software update delay which had us on the ground for almost 2 hours. I was unable to make my shuttle to my final destination.

Good. Quiet. Comfortable. The protests nearly kept me from catching my flight. They waited for me! I made it!

Red eye flight, so not expecting any extras, but the boarding and trip was smooth. Thx Alaska.

Received little assistance with air sick child. Crew’s main concern was if anything got on the seat belt!

Flight was excellent! Comfortable seats. Flew out of IND. very friendly crew!

It was fine… Just overbooked every seat was taken and very bumpy nothing they could do about that. Overall I like to fly Alaska airlines

Seat width is getting ridiculous. I don’t like having to twist myself into a ball to avoid my neighbor. It has gotten so bad over the last few years.

Had a broken tray in business class. Crew just shrugged it off.

Everything was great except for the seat. The backrest would not stay in the upright position.

Flight delayed about 2 hrs so it made it a VERY late night

public website still broken for years randomly blocking browsers with privacy options active after loading a page maybe once. check-in on laptop was almost impossible but eventually randomly worked. had to print pass at airport since couldn't get back in to load digital pass on mobile firefox or chrome. red eye flight so smooth onboarding, plenty of room to spread out, easy offboarding. onboard wifi instructions mention vpn can cause problems connecting but fails to also mention private dns. no printed or built in menu list, seems weird to require personal device to point at qr code link for menu which does not even allow direct ordering. people with health condition risk related dietary restrictions trying to avoid for example cholesterol and sugar are left guessing what they can order either way without nutritional info highlights (cranberry juice was minute maid cocktail with as much suger as typical can of soda). tap to pay wasn't working and always seems sketchy to manually enter card info. good movie variety, so limited tv was okay.

Bag drop off was slow and annoying. Only 2 agents at the entire delta desk, and no one directing traffic for what line to be in, many confused people slowed down the process. Boarding was fine. Seats in Delta comfort plus were fine. Snacks were great! Definitely a bonus. The entertainment system was awful — old, slow, not responsive, and completely unable to play games due to some kind of error. But on the other hand, thank you to Delta for the free WiFi. That made it better.

Flight diverted in SD. Later take off in Seattle by 1.3hrs

Mi primera conexión se retrasó por lo cual perdí mi segunda conexión la cual salió adelantada

Crew was not friendly when I went to request a seat change.

There were choices for the snacks. Good choices and tasty lunch and breakfast as well.

The flight crew was amazing. I’m very tall and they moved me to an exit row unsolicited!!! Amazing service.

The Flight attendant had an attitude and didn't allow anyone any time to prepare for landing despite being absent throughout the entire trip

Flight boarded without pilots. Sat on plane for 3 hrs. after over an hour late boarding. Plane never took off. Had to deplane near midnight. Line for rebooking was 3 hours + long. I had to leave.

The flight was great but board was a nightmare. The gate was changed 4 times during the layover period

The experience was great and much better than the flight going out. of course I was in first class but the service was excellent

Cold air blew constantly on my legs almost making me numb.

Missed the flight because of them and up geting a rental car

Delayd flight out of atl as always miss my conection in dfw no flight untill next day

Comfort of seats, ease of boarding. Food selection could be better

i suspect i caught flu on this flight as i could hear someone coughing a few rows back and ended up with flu a few days later. also tiresome to have to watch movies on my device by holding up smartphone screen, would have liked to have in seat display.

Flight was fine. It took an unusually long time to have baggage delivered to the carousel in ORD.
