Best time to avail a Norway tour package!

Norway is commonly regarded as remote and cold – spectacular but climatically inhospitable. It does not have a particular best time to visit which largely depends on what you’re expecting on your journey. Winters experience long dark nights and shorter days but they can be a retreat as you may get a chance to experience the phenomenal northern lights (aurora borealis). Later, after this season, the weather starts lightening up and this is the best time to enjoy various activities like skiing, dog-sledding, ice fishing and snowmobiling. Easter is the time of the colourful Sámi festivals, and mid-May can be absolutely delightful if your visit coincides with the brief Norwegian spring, though this is difficult to gauge. Nevertheless, most people travel during the summer season, which can be the best time to visit as This is the time of the midnight sun.

What is the most famous dish from Norway?

Norway is the country where one can find some of the world’s best raw ingredients. This is also the reason behind the huge popularity of Norwegian cuisine among people from all parts of the world. Although there are a number of dishes that this country is known for, Fårikål is unarguably the most popular one. Often called Norway’s national dish, this is a traditional dish that has been eaten in Norway for generations. Fårikål is basically a stew prepared with mutton and cabbage. Other than this, there are a few more dishes you should definitely try on your trip, such as lapskaus, smalahove, raspeball, etc. Whether you are planning a vacation or a culinary tour, you can explore our range of all-inclusive Norway tour packages.

The Geography and Seasons

Located in Northern Europe, the Scandinavian country of Norway encompasses mountains, glaciers, and coastal fjords. Bordered by the North Sea, Norwegian Sea, and the country of Sweden, Norway is a legendary region in Scandinavia. With one of the Norway tours, you can check out the perfect geographical features of the place owing to which it witnesses a line of natural phenomena unlike any other on this planet! Midnight Sun or Northern Lights are the magical experiences which make Norway one of the world’s most exciting destinations to visit! The seasonal pattern of this land is so unique, due to its geological location, that it adds up to the experience, which can be seen with our unique Norway tour packages from India.

The Culture

The culture of Norway can be traced back to the Vikings. They are known to be the group of Scandinavian seafaring pirates, traders, and pioneers that settled in Northern Europe in the eighth century. The Viking culture inspired a lot of movies and comics with its uniqueness! The cultural significance is so distinctive that it can be defined as both heterogeneous and homogeneous at the same time! The cultural charms can be experienced with our cost-effective Norway packages available online. Explore these uniquely distinct factors of their culture and tradition along with us, as we thrive to give you experiences that will stay with you for a lifetime!

The Experience

Adventure heaven for the wild hearted and high spirited, Norway is truly a dream of Mother Earth herself! The experiences of this quirky land have a vibrant nature which ranges in all possible shades and is a part of all Norway tours. The distinctive attributes of this land from leisure to adventure trails are so unmatched that they leave you spoilt for varied choices! The Cruise for Tromso awaits to give you an unforgettable experience to cherish for a lifetime, along with our Scandinavian vacation packages. Experience the phenomenal magical lights famously known as Northern Lights in different shades right from luminous green, often with a hint of pink along the edge, and occasionally with a deep violet centre along with our Norway tour packages. To enjoy these amazing phenomena, we proceed to Risvika to enjoy reindeer sledding on the northern part of Kvaloya, which offers amazing chances of seeing the Northern Lights. Midnight Sun is a natural phenomenon that occurs in the summer season in places that are north of Arctic Circle or south of Antarctic Circle. It can be described as a season of sun kissed days and never-ending vibes of summer with a corny habit to confuse your biological clock. The sun appears to be setting only to rise again within minutes. Talk about going the extra mile - the natural heritage of this land will definitely surprise you!

The Highlights

Veena World offers reasonably priced package holidays to Norway online. Northern Lights tour packages from India include Karasjok, Honningsvag, Alta, Tromso, Bergen and Oslo as their main highlights. On your Norway trip, explore Honningsvag with a visit to the “North Cape”, a 920 feet high steep cliff referred as the northernmost point of Europe. Explore Alta and enjoy a scenic drive in the evening. The land of Tromso awaits you! Visit to Polaria, an Arctic aquarium, to see the interesting knowledge-based exhibits, a panoramic cinema, and feeding of the seals. Enjoy the visit to world-renowned Tromso University Museum, Polar Museum to know about the risky Arctic trapping and courageous polar expeditions. Explore Bergen as you travel by Mt. Floyen Funicular Tram and enjoy panoramic views of Bergen city from the top. Later, take an orientation tour of the Wharf – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the bustling fish market. Take the scenic alpine train from Flam to Myrdal. Then, further move on to Gudvagen and visit the Sognefjord. Then, proceed to Oslo by train and en-route experience the scenic beauty of Flam and Myrdal. Arrive in Oslo, capital of Norway, and visit the world famous Vigeland Sculpture Park and Holmenkollen Ski Museum & Tower, with its observation deck that offers panoramic views of the city. Take a photo stop at Opera House along with a visit to Kon Tiki Museum and Ice Bar.

Yet, with all of this exploration, the highlights of Norway will remain the natural wonders of this land. Witnessing these mystical and very much fiction-like phenomena caused by the celestial alignments of sun and earth makes you think about how small the existence of humankind may seem to be in the scale of this universe. Every now and then, collecting such experiences that give you a whole new perception of life is very necessary in everyone’s lives! It is rightly said, how much ever you read or browse on the internet for this supernatural marvel, being there and actually witnessing it is what makes the difference! Experience what it means when people say ‘don’t believe until you see it’ with our Norway tour packages from India. The hypnotising aspect of this land has a corny reputation of luring every traveller and every explorer to this land, at least once in their lifetime.

Norway road trip - complete, july 2023, memories we'll cherish forever.

We found Norway to be a fabulous country and enjoyed every minute of our trip. The scenery was fantastic, the places visited were brilliant and the people were incredibly friendly and helpful. The information pack provided by Nordic Visitor was invaluable, the route chosen for us was superb and the places we stayed in were great. Likewise, the excursions offered, especially the Rib Safari were fantastic and gave us memories we'll cherish forever. Lastly, but by no means least, Irja, our travel consultant, couldn't have been more helpful and I would like to extend a huge thank you to her for all that she did.

Anne-Mari, Finland

Best of northern norway classic - 71° north cape, february 2023, unforgettable in so many ways.

It was unforgettable in so many ways, highlights after highlights. We knew to expect a lot after our trip to Iceland a couple of years ago, also organised by Nordic Visitor. Our expectations were exceeded and more. We saw northern lights three times, the food everywhere was excellent, experienced dog sledding in the moonlight and sleeping in the SnowHotel, and we saw a white reindeer! How lucky we are to have experienced all that. We have now returned home, happy and full of awe.

James, Australia

Northern lights by train and cruise, october 2023, a great experience.

Very well-organised tour and a great experience. Nordic Visitor were very professional and their experience was evident in choosing the well-located and comfortable accommodation they selected for us. Best of all we got to see the northern lights!

Jonathan, United States

Norway fjord route by car - classic, june 2023, incredibly happy.

Our travel agent, Małgorzata, was amazing to work with! She was able to add a few extra days in Oslo and arranged transportation via train to Bergen. Overall, I thought booking this vacation online and making payments was seamless. All the hotels we stayed in were nice, clean and safe! We loved the breakfast buffets, they were top notch! Also, collecting our rental car and navigating in a foreign country was seamless. We are incredibly happy that our tour package that we received at our first hotel included a physical map that had our tour highlighted.

Costel, Romania

Northern lights norway classic, february 2023, i'll be recommending nordic visitor to my friends.

The trip was really amazing. We had an absolutely superb time in Tromsø; hotel and excursions were spot on. The guide and whole the staff was really professional. Professional photos taken by the guide were really fantastic. They gave us excellent care, more than what we have experienced on any trip. Our favourite experience was the snowmobile, but catamaran trip was great too. Certainly I will be recommending it to my friends. I was very pleased that those who delivered the services showed a lot of professionalism.

Violetta, United States

Best of the norwegian fjords – express, august 2023, very satisfied customer.

This was my second experience using Nordic Visitor. I am a very satisfied customer. A few years ago we did a self-drive tour of Iceland that was just amazing. This time we did a train/cruise combo tour of Norway. Once again, I can only say you will have a fantastic experience and you will appreciate the labuor of organising and planning being handled by experts who know what they are doing. The cruises through the fjords were beautiful as were the train trips. We loved the combination of train and boat travel as each offered distinct beauty from a different perspective. The country is truly lovely and we look forward to booking future travel with Nordic Visitor!

Dian, United States

Wonders of the norwegian fjords, august 2023, best vacation we ever had.

Our family of 5 (3 adult children) loved our Norway fjord tour. We saw the most beautiful scenery and loved each hotel. The food was delicious. Something for everyone. Our guide Al and driver Chris kept things running smoothly. We will have memories to last a lifetime. Thank you Nordic Visitor. Best vacation we ever had!

Alan, United Kingdom

Norway in a nutshell® express - winter, march 2023, an excellent decision to book with nordic visitor.

Following research, we decided to book with Nordic Visitor. This was an excellent decision. The booking process was easy and informative and Hanna was always available for guidance. The accommodation provided was top class and, importantly, convenient to the train stations from which we travelled. Our tour was amazing throughout with stunning scenery and sights.

Gailmarie, United States

Highlights of norway, july 2022, the tour gives you a fabulous overview of norway.

The tour gives you a fabulous overview of Norway. We did a lot of travel in between sights but this enabled us to have a real breadth of experience, from fjords to mountain passes, railway adventures and small boats. Our tour guide was excellent and the sights and experiences outlined for us were top-notch. The materials provided about our tour were excellent and well thought out.

All inclusive 10 day epic Norway roadtrip from India

  • October 15, 2022

No, it was not supposed to be Norway. It was supposed to be somewhere else. But as the world was slowly opening with ambiguous and tedious entry guidelines; we decided to tick that place in our bucketlist which has the easiest entry guidelines.

Though not part of original plan, the choice of going back to the Nordics was undoubtedly the best decision we made in 2022. We knew we will love it specially after our time in Iceland , just before the pandemic. After we spent three unforgettable nights in arctic wonderland of Svalbard , it was time to drive through the land of midnight sun – the epic one-week roadtrip in Norway.

Brace yourself and let us teleport you to one of the most scenic countries we have ever been. Through this article you will also get a complete idea on how to plan your trip to this place.

Norway roadtrip from India

Table of Contents

Why Norway roadtrip?

Norway is all about jaw-dropping natural beauty, vibrant cities, cute villages, and a glimpse of Viking culture. With crystal clear fjords, thrilling hiking trails, misty mountains and glaciers, Norway is undoubtedly one of the most scenic destinations in Europe.

However, if you are like us who loves exploring a country in public transport and keep it within our budget, Norway may disappoint you. Beyond cities like Oslo, Bergen public transport connectivity is not dense. If you like to spend time in a cute cabin in the banks of a fjord amidst the most instagrammable landscape – getting there through public transport can be challenging.

So put the seat belt on and keep your license handy, because you are going to rent a car and embark on a roadtrip of your life. A roadtrip through Norway can come out cheaper than exploring the country in public transport. In subsequent sections we will tell you how. Also remember most of the pocket friendly stays in big cities are normally not in the downtowns. Hence coming to the downtown and seeing around can be time consuming if you depend on public transport only.

But it is worth mentioning that there are few out-worldly train routes are there in Norway like the one that connects Oslo to Bergen (a 6 hour train ride) or the one that goes through Flam village. Don’t miss these routes if for some reasons you are not doing a roadtrip.

Best time to do a Norway roadtrip from India ?

Even on the southwest coast of Bergen, the beginning of the year is very cold and dark. If you are looking for the aurora, then January or February is the time to be in Norway

March and Apri l are the best time to travel Norway to maximize sunshine hours and snowfall at winter resorts with slushy snow on the ground. During May flowers start blooming across Norway and snow slowly start disappearing.

June, July and August are the months with the warmest temperatures and the most hours of sunshine , making for a relaxing time. This summer season is a popular time to travel to Norway. But be ready to spend some extra bucks in these high-traffic months After school holidays in mid-September and October, Norway is sandwiched between summer and winter, when some outdoor attractions are closed due to snow and heavy winds, making things a little more affordable.

November is cold and dark , snow clouds are peaking at higher levels, and nothing is happening except the Northern Lights. In December, light snow falls, lakes freeze, and Christmas celebrations begin to light up Norway.

TEE Tip : If you are coming to Norway in winter months for seeing Northern Lights, then keep maximum time in northern Norway like Lofoten or Tromso. If you like to see the colours, want to do some epic hikes and drive through some unimaginable landscapes then we highly recommend visiting in early June. This is the best time to see the country with snows in high mountains, accessible hiking trails, mesmerized yourself in the natural beauty with less tourists and most importantly without making a deep hole in pocket.

We had seen northern lights in Iceland in 2020 . Hence decided our Norway trip during first week of June . We were blessed with absolute perfect weather (though keep in mind that Norway can be finicky in terms of rains). Midnight sun was another thing we wanted to experience, and it was really intriguing to see how the sky is well lit at 11 pm as well.

Car rental in Norway

After comparing multiple sites, we choose to book it from SixT car rental . We chose Corolla Station Wagon Hybrid (Automatic + Manual) as we were four folks traveling. SixT provides the best rate and the service including the car condition is top notch

You can choose a smaller car if the number of people is less. Roads in Norway are in very good condition and since the gas prices are high, a smaller car helps to keep your budget in limit.

We would highly recommend booking the car well in advance. You can pay for it while picking it up. But by booking in advance, you can save a lot. For 7 days, for our car we paid around NOK 3500 or INR 27000 in rental which was showing up to NOK 8000 or INR 64000 a week before our travel. Only add-ons you should opt for a GPS inbuilt, unlimited KMs and the insurance that suits you best. You may consider getting winter equipment in case you are doing this roadtrip between October to April.

Things to remember while driving in Norway

  • You’ll be driving on the right-hand side of the road in Norway unlike left side driving in India. Your Indian license will work fine (just check if everything written the license is in English only) for 90 days in Norway. Hence no need for applying International License
  • You will have to fill fuel in gas stations by yourself only. Ask a local if you need any guidance. Also note that, at gas stations, you need to first swipe your card and they will block a fixed amount (in our case it was around 1500 NOK or INR 12000). Based on how much fuel you fill in your car, the rest amount will be refunded in a day or two
  • Try to pick up and drop the car in same location . We picked up from Oslo and dropped in Oslo only. We ensured we did a circuit and not crossed the same road twice. However, if you can afford to spend few extra bucks you can choose to have a different pick up and drop point. You will avoid some extra drive time and able to see more places
  • We found a lot of free public toilets while driving and bay area (parking spots) on the side of the roads. So you can take a stop whenever you want. Also drink as much fresh Norwegian water as you want, it is completely safe.
  • Ferries are absolutely essential for getting around Norway , as there are many bodies of water in Norway. Fortunately, Norwegians have built a very efficient ferry system. Ferries are also very easy to use, most ferries can be boarded directly (you can walk or drive into it with your car) and tickets can be purchased while entering the ferry or on board. Most ferry trips do not require advance reservations or ticket purchases. The ferries are comfortable with cafes, bathrooms, and padded seats. Get out of your car and head to the upper deck for some amazing views.
  • When you road trip through Norway, you will come across many toll roads . If you’re renting a car, your car will have an AutoPass device installed that automatically tracks tolls you collect as you drive (a green plus sign appears on the road to indicate device use). Your car rental company will adjust the toll amounts from the deposit they have blocked in your card.
  • Most streets have little traffic . Make sure you allow plenty of time for the drive as you’ll want to stop for sightseeing quite often (everything is very beautiful)!
  • Parking is paid within many cities ; you can pay for it at a parking meter or through the EasyPark app. The app works in all Norwegian cities, from the far north to the southernmost. It’s much easier to pay for parking using the app, so we recommend downloading the app and setting it up in advance (add payment method and car registration number). Plus, the app lets you adjust your parking time as needed instead of going back to the meter or paying in advance. Alternatively, your car rental company will adjust it against the deposit after you return the car.
  • Finally, choose a car with GPS as you may not want to rely solely on phone navigation in remote areas. Also, there are plenty of speed-detecting cameras installed throughout the tunnels and highways. A car GPS will alert you much ahead of the camera location to adjust your speed and avoid paying penalty.

Norway roadtrip from India

Our One -week Itinerary and other possibilities:

A country like Norway with endless natural beauties and diverse options available across the country can easily became very tedious to plan. More when you have only 10 days, you need to count every day. After a lot of research, we crafted the itinerary that covers west of Norway and included things we wanted to cover.

Since we wanted to have same start and end point to avoid hefty charges from car rental – we picked our car from Oslo and dropped it in Oslo again.

Here is our very high-level day wise plan:

  Day 1: Reach Oslo

Day 2: Oslo to Odda via Hardangervidda National Park and Låtefossen Waterfall

Day 3: Hike Trolltunga and overnight in Odda

Day 4: Odda to Bergen and explore Bergen

  Day 5: Bergen to Gudvangen

Day 6: Gudvangen to Stryn via Stegastein viewpoint

Day 7: Explore Stryn and Geirangerfjord UNESCO heritage cruise

  Day 8: Stryn to Oslo

  Day 9: Explore Oslo

Day 10: Fly out of Oslo

Before we go in detail of each day, let us tell you Norway is huge. Accept that, in 10 days it is not possible to cover everything. Even a month may seem short for that.

However, there are many airports within Norway, hence sharing a rough idea where you should fly into if you are interested in certain specific things. This way you can reduce drive time, as the country has lot of mountains, ferries, and tunnels – it may take longer than usual to reach from one place to other even the roads are in superb condition.

Norway Roadtrip

TEE Tip:  A very rough guide of what you can choose based on your preference

  • For Norway’s cities and mountains fly into Oslo. Also most international flights first land in Oslo only.
  • For both city and fjords experience, fly into Bergen.
  • If you want to do some epic hikes like Preikestolen, Kjeragbolten, and Trolltunga – fly into Stavanger. (Though we did Trolltunga while started from Oslo and it is close to Bergen as well.)
  • If you have a thing for fjords and mountains, including Geirangerfjord, Trollstigen, and the Atlantic Road, fly into Ålesund.
  • If you want to chase aurora in the winter months head to Lofoten or fly into Tromsø or Bodø

Day 1: Fly to Oslo from Bangalore

Stay:   Cochs Pensjonat  . Basic and comfortable with a very good location.

Cost:  NOK 1800 or around INR 14000 for a family room of 4 per night

We had Qatar Airways flight from Bangalore to Oslo via Doha. After reaching Oslo in the afternoon and post finishing our immigration, it was time to step out in another Nordic country. The vibes in this part of Europe always fill our heart with so much joy. Hence, the love-story continues from our trip to Copenhagen before pandemic

  • Strangely we have not got any functional ATM or SIM card store in Oslo Airport. There is enough self-service Kiosk and one kiosk with human from where you should get the bus or train ticket
  • We recommend you take the NSB or VY trains (green ones). You can avoid FlytoGet trains which are little overpriced since they dedicatedly operate between Oslo Lufthavn (airport) to Oslo Central
  • There is a Radisson right opposite to the airport exit. If you are coming late in Oslo or have a flight to catch next day, you can stay there. Alternatively you can check Gardermoen Hotel which is 5 km away from airport (can get a bus ticket from airport) and much easy on pocket than Radisson.
  • If you are coming to Oslo Central by VY trains (it will take 35 mins) from airport, then you can stay in the stay we mentioned above. It is a nice basic stay to spend a night in a nice surrounding of Oslo downtown.
  • Once you reach to the hotel, you can visit any nearest 7-Eleven store for grabbing a quick snack and get your sim-card. In all 7-Elevens you will get Mycall sim cards. In local grocery stores, you should get Lyca sim. Though Lyca offers little better plans, due to high accessibility of 7-Elevens across Norway, you can get the Mycall sim also.

You can keep the next day to explore Oslo, however we decided to explore the city before leaving on our last day. We wanted to start on our roadtrip as soon as possible !!

Norway roadtrip from India

Day 2: Oslo to Odda via Hardangervidda National Park and Latefossen waterfalls

Drive time: 5 hrs.’ without break. You can easily add couple of hours for breaks and stops. Odda should be your base for hiking Trolltunga the next day. (In case you are not hiking Trolltunga, you can directly move to Bergen)

Stay: Indre Stanna . Probably one of the most amazing stays we had in our entire trip and one of the costliest as well. But absolutely worth it.

Cost: NOK 3300 or INR 25300 approx. for the entire apartment.

This is the day we started early. Picked up the car from SixT and stopped at a KIWI grocery store before starting of the epic road trip.

  • You can get Uber from your hotel to reach the SixT office or you can also get a bus. However, ask your hotel to book the taxi/uber if your sim is not activated by then
  • Once you pick up the car and all set, you should stop at either a KIWI, REMA1000 or Pris grocery store. Food prices in Norway are insanely high, hence we highly recommend to stuff grocery as most of the stays will have kitchen. This is one of the biggest savings you can do in Norway
  • All three, Kiwi, REMA1000 and Pris are budget departmental stores. We personally used REMA1000 the most
  • Once we leave Oslo city and move towards Odda, you see landscape changing dramatically. We also got some rainfall on our way. But it was absolutely a breathtaking drive through mountain roads, tunnels, fjords – “love at first sight” can’t have any better example

Hardangervidda National Park: 3 hours driving distance from Oslo, this should be your first pit stop. The Hardangervidda National Park forms the central point where the eastern region of the country meets the western and southern regions.

A huge network of hiking trails and ski routes make Hardangervidda an accessible area for hikers and skiers. July and August are the best months for hiking in Hardangervidda, and late winter is perfect for ski trips. The western plateau offers spectacular scenery, with high mountains, deep valleys and spectacular waterfalls. The broad, rolling terrain of the eastern plateau is ideal for hiking. The abundance of lakes and rivers makes the area a fisherman’s paradise. You can take a quick 45 min stop here before moving towards Latefossen

Latefossen waterfalls:  One hour before reaching Odda town, you should encounter this magnificent double waterfall cascading into the stream from one side of the road to the other. Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful waterfalls in this region. We literally struggled to keep our camera lens dry, since it was already drizzling, we tried to our best to get a clean, comprehensive image. This is despite standing next to the parking lot across from the bridge, a little downstream from the base of the falls! A sign here indicates that this waterfall fell from a height of 165 meters

Latefossen

Odda Town: It is one of those many small and cute towns of Norway. Primarily visited as the base of Trolltunga hike. Perhaps one of the most sought-after trails in Norway

Norway roadtrip from India

Day 3: Hike the epic Trolltunga

Stay:   Indre Stanna .

Today you should be ticking of one the highlights of this trip. Hiking of Trolltunga – one of the most awe-inspiring cliffs overlooking fjord in entire Norway.

Between 1 st June to 31 st October, you can hike by yourself while the rest of the time it must be a guided hike only.

Below are three different starting point options (P1, P2 or P3) for hiking Trolltunga where you can park your car and start the hike

Trolltunga Hike

  • We suggest you start your day as early as 7 am. You can easily drive till P2 and park your cars there. There are around 180 parking available and you should easily get one. It costs around 400 NOK per car per day
  • If you are a very good driver, you can drive up to P3. But you can drive there only if you have pre-booked the parking at P3. It has only 30 car spots. You should get all details here
  • If you park at P2, you can take shuttle bus to reach P3 and save on hiking time. Road between P2 to P3 is little treacherous with sharp curves, so venture only if you are a confident driver in this type of terrain
  • If you park your car at P1, you may not need to pay anything but the distance is too far to cover in one single day from P1
View this post on Instagram A post shared by Trolltunga | Hiking | Hotel (@visittrolltunga)

Day 4: Odda to Bergen

Drive time: Close to 3 hrs. Today you will do the first ferry crossing in Norway

Stay: Bergen Hostel Montana . A decent hostel with all functionalities and easy on pocket. This place situated 3 km from the downtown and at the foothills of Mount Ulriken (highest peak of Bergen)

Cost: NOK 1000 or INR 8500 (approx.) for a basic double room

After a tiring day of hike, take this day light. Post breakfast you can start your drive to Bergen. Enjoy the ferry crossing where you can park your car and go up the deck to see the view around. No need to buy any prior tickets, just put your car in the queue and as soon as a ferry comes (normally every 20 mins), just drive-in.

Norway roadtrip from India

  • Bergen is one of the biggest cities in Norway and it is next to the ocean
  • The city is covered with 7 mountains and we recommend you to cover at least one, Mount Fløyen or Mount Ulriken
  • You can get some amazing seafoods in Bergen though it can be a bit costly
  • Walking around the narrow alleys and slopes of Bergen, you should love the views of mountain on one side and sea on the other side

Below things you can plan to see if you have only half day in Bergen

Bryggen street: The first place to visit in Bergen is the historic center of Bryggen. Bryggen is a very scenic street of historic wooden houses on the waterfront. This historic center of Bergen is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and for good reason. It’s also a great starting point for exploring Bergen. Bryggen is one of the oldest port cities in Northern Europe and has been completely restored. Sixty-two preserved wooden houses give visitors a glimpse into the world of the Hanseatic trading empire that ruled the area from the 14th to the mid-16th century. Bryggen’s buildings have been destroyed by fire many times since its construction in 1070, but much of the old town has survived. A beautiful to walk through the streets that take you back in time.

Norway roadtrip from India

The Hanseatic Museum: The Hanseatic Museum is a beautiful old building in Bryggen. This museum represents and tells the story of the Hanseatic German merchants who worked and lived here from 1350 to 1750. They were merchants who held an important place in Bergen’s history. Their mission was to trade cod and grain from their offices in Bergen. From 1872, the museum had two of his merchant houses facing the sea and one of his merchant houses behind a tenement house. As you walk through this building in Bryggen, you’ll also find that the original interior has been preserved.

Mount Ulriken: The highest point in Bergen stands at 643 meters. You can take Ulriksbanen cable car which will take you to the top in 10 mins (it will cost NOK 370 or close to INR 3000 per person for a round trip). Alternatively, you can hike up and it will take 1 -1.5 hour to the top. The trail is very well laid. At the top you will have a restaurant and a telescope which offers a great panoramic view of entire Bergen

IMG 0345

Mount Floyen:  As alternative to Mount Ulriken, take a funicular to top of Mount Floyen for another breathtaking view of Bergen. The ticket costs less than the one for Ulriken. Mount Floyen is at 400-meter level and a short walk from the downtown of Bergen

Norway roadtrip from India

Day 5: Bergen to Gudvangen via Stegastein Viewpoint

Drive time : Close to 3 hours till Stegastein viewpoint and 1 hour more to Gudvangen

Stay: Gudvangen Fjordtell . We highly recommend staying here for one light at least. This is a resort which is located in the shores of fjord with numerous waterfalls and mountains all around it. It is nature’s fairytale to say the least

Cost: NOK 3500 or INR 30000 for an apartment of 4 people ( no doubt the costliest stay of our entire trip, but highly worth it)

  • This drive from Bergen to Gudvangen via Stegastein viewpoint is one of the most scenic one we had in entire Norway
  • You can take stop at Voss town, which is considered as “Activity Capital” of Norway. If you have time, you can do ziplining, skydiving, rafting or a gondola ride. Else at least spend an hour to walk around this beautiful town surrounded by some breathtaking mountains and streams
  • The village of Flam will blow your mind away which you will cross while going up to the viewpoint
  • Once you reach Gudvangen Fjordtell, you can do kayaking or just walk around in the resort to appreciate nature’s abundance. We bet; you won’t see something like this in this itinerary

Norway roadtrip from India

Stegastein Viewpoint: A must-see sightseeing tour for all visitors to Flåm. From Flåm, you can take a bus or drive up till Stegastein viewpoint. The road is not very wide band has bends, so we recommend you to be careful.

Once you reach the top, you can see a glass walkaway – projecting 30 meters from the mountainside and 650 meters above the fjord, the structure offers an unparalleled panorama. A more beautiful view of the fjords, mountains and surrounding countryside is hard to imagine. It’s the perfect place to capture breathtaking views and unforgettable photos. For all the right reasons, it is one of the most photographed viewpoints in the area.

IMG 0525

Day 6: Gudvangen to Stryn via world’s longest tunnel

Drive time: Close to 4 hours

Stay: Panorama Apartment . A very beautiful Airbnb with equally amazing hosts. This place is 10 mins drive from main Stryn town but offers amazing view of the fjord from the balcony. You can just sit there for whole day. The owner Mindaugas had come to Norway 13 years before from Lithuania right after his marriage and build this entire property all by himself (yes, I mean construction, electricity, plumbing work – all by one person !!) Overall, a lovely family and very comfortable stay

Cost: 2000 NOK or INR 16000 per night for the entire apartment which can host 4 people easily

  • The highlight of today’s drive must be Lærdal tunnel which is almost 24-kilometer-long road tunnel connecting the municipalities of Lærdal and Aurland. You will be driving through a lot of tunnels in Norway, but driving in this can be one hell of an experience
  • Stryn has some amazing hike and fjords. You can hike or take a cable car (Loen Skyloft) to top of Mt. Hoven. From the top you can enjoy the stunning view of Jostedalsbreen glacier, mountains, and fjords. You can also enjoy a delicious local meal from the cliffside restaurant at top.

Norway roadtrip from India

Day 7: Explore Geirangerfjord in cruise

Drive time : Close to 3 hours

Stay: Panorama Apartment

  • Post breakfast drive to Geiranger and don’t choose the rout via Hellesylt while going to Geiranger. Choose the route via Folva. You should reach Geiranger in 2 hrs and then take the cruise with your car from there. The cruise will drop you at Hellesylt and from there you should drive back to Stryn which takes about an hour.
  • You should be able to book the cruise from here and please book it in advance
  • A 60 – min one way (Geiranger to Hellesylt) cruise you should choose
  • You can select the car package which includes one car and 5 persons. It costed us around 1400 NOK or INR 11500

A UNESCO heritage cruise on the Geirangerfjord offers views of various majestic mountains and rapid waterfalls. The boat departs from the Geiranger harbor where you can enjoy coffee and freshly baked waffles while enjoying views of the Geirangerfjord and the majestic surrounding mountains.

Look up and you’ll see a small mountain farm clinging to the cliff. An audio guide tells exciting stories about life on a mountain farm and the people who lived there. The boat sails very close to the famous waterfalls ‘Seven Sisters’, ‘Freeze’ and ‘Bridal Veil’. Grab a place onto the deck for the best views and keep your camera nearby.

In the evening you can spend time kayaking in the fjord or exploring the Stryn town as this will be your last night before returning to Oslo and drop your car

IMG 0689

Day 8: Drive back to Oslo

Drive time: Close to 6 hours without breaks

Stay: Anker Hostel , Oslo. A very basic hostel at the heart of Oslo

Cost: 1000 NOK or INR 8000 for a couple per night

  • Post breakfast you can start your long drive back to Oslo. You need to drive the longest today (almost 500km). Hence start early.
  • If you have extra days, you can cover Alesund, Kristiansund and Atlantic roads before coming back to Oslo
  • Drop your car once you reach Oslo and have a good night sleep with a contend heart after finishing one of the most epic roadtrip in Europe

But wait, the trip is not over yet. You are yet to see the capital, Oslo

IMG 1970

Day 9: Explore Oslo

Stay: Anker Hostel , Oslo.

You can explore Oslo for a day before leaving the country

The city has lot to see. If you have only 24 hrs, you can consider covering the below places. You should get a full day ticket to tram and trains from any of the 7-Elevens

Norway roadtrip from India

Vigeland Sculpture Park : Located in Frogner Parken in the city centre. Access to the park is free. The Vigeland Park has over 212 sculptures by Gustav Vigeland, including the Obelisk and the Wheel of Life. Another of his popular sculptures is Sinnataggen, a boy stamping his feet angrily. This statue is well known as an icon of Oslo. The park is the world’s largest single-artist sculpture park and is open year-round.

Oslo Opera House: Undoubtedly one of the most stunning buildings of Oslo. You can climb up to the sloping roof from the ground and get a great view of the Oslo Fjord. Oslo Opera House, built of glass and Carrara marble, houses a variety of his art installations, and a great place to enjoy an Opera show in the evening. You can sit in front of the waterfront and enjoy the vibe of this place. You may find some local musicians playing some good tunes.

IMG 1929

Akershus Fortress:  This Oslo attraction is a medieval palace and fortress complex that dates to the 1290s. Akershus Fortress has worn several hats in its history and served as the seat of the Akershus county government before being incorporated into Oslo, a royal palace, prison, and prime minister’s residence.

Royal Palace and walk along Karl Johan’s street: If you start your walk from Karl Johan’s gate station, you will pass by many shops, cafes, and restaurants. At the end of Karl Johan’s Street, in your left is the Royal Palace, with two beautiful lion statues of him guarding the entrance. The Royal Palace is open to the public for guided tours only during the summer months. around the palace complex. Norwegian royal family still lives here. You must not miss the change of guards show at 1:30 pm daily. You can walk around the complex and appreciate the grand structure

Snapseed 5

Oslo City Hall : Oslo City Hall houses the city’s administration and council. City Hall took 30 years to build, including a halt to construction when World War II broke out. In 1950, the Oslo City Hall was completed in a functionalist style. City Hall is in contrast with Oslo’s modern, minimalist Scandinavian architecture. Nevertheless, this place was named Oslo’s ‘Building of the Century’ in 2005. City Hall is not only an administrative building, it is also the site where the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony takes place. It also has museum showcasing Norwegian arts and culture

Depends on your flight timing, you can fly out of Oslo to day 10

How much did we spend for this 10 day Norway roadtrip from India

Norway budget for 10 days roadtrip

  • Please note we have not stayed in Oslo on 9 th night as we had evening flight to Amsterdam. Hence the stay cost is only considered for 8 nights. Return fare value is calculated based on what we saw a return flight would cost while booking our Bangalore to Oslo ticket
  • Due to illness, we didn’t hike to Trolltunga (our friends did), so Trolltunga parking and shuttle bus cost is not included
  • The cost of car, stay and food came out reasonable because it is divided among 4 persons

Overall, you can consider a ballpark estimate of INR1.6 lac to 1.7 lac per person for 9 nights in Oslo if you follow this itinerary.

7 things to keep in mind to save money in Norway:

Hands down Norway is one of the costliest countries in the world. You can consider below suggestions to keep the cost manageable:

  • Cook your own food and buy groceries from Kiwi or REMA 1000 stores only
  • If cooking is not possible, next most economical option is 7-Eleven stores
  • For airport transfer take VY trains instead of Flytoget
  • Refill car fuels from YX or Esso stations for best rates
  • Get your train/bus tickets from 7-Elevens
  • Buy souvenir from local stores of Karl Johan’s gate instead of Waynor shop in Oslo
  • Try to get Lyca sim from local stores. You will not get that in 7-Elevens

Norway Fjords and Arctics

"There is no place like Norway", is what people say once they have been to Norway. The question is, where in Norway? The Central Fjord land with its curving Fjord Valleys, gushing waterfalls, and scenic roads will make you think, does it get any better than this? And then you come to Senja and Lofoten Islands in the Arctic! We want to share the extreme beauty of Norway with you. A land which is above all!!!

In view of the recent announcement by the Government in the budget session 2023, a 20 % TCS fee will be charged on the actual tour cost for all outbound tourists commencing October onwards. The tourist can claim a tax credit for the paid TCS.

Arrive in Oslo – Alesund

After clearing immigration in Oslo, we will proceed to the domestic terminal in Oslo (same building) to board a flight to the central coastal town of Ålesund.

Alesund - Loen

Today's road journey will first take us to Invvikfjord and then cross over to Anda on a ferry. We will Visit the Norwegian Fjord Horse Centre in Nordfjordeid, which is famous for its horse breed, the Fjord Horse. Check-in to the hotel in Loen in the evening for dinner and an overnight stay.

We will visit a horse farm and then continue to Oldedalen. Here we will take a Troll Car to the mouth of the Briksdalen Glacier , the longest glacier in Europe. We will have a chance to see the blue façade of the glacier as we see it towering upwards. The most scenic Fjord in Norway, the Geiranger Fjord is a UNESCO world heritage site. Our day will start with the Fjord Cruise on the Geiranger passing several abandoned farms on the way. The prime attractions, however, are the 'Seven Sisters' and 'Bridal Veil' waterfalls . The fjord has steep mountain walls on both sides and that’s the reason it is so dramatic. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel in Leon.

Loen - Andalsnes

Today take the most scenic Golden Route drive will take you up the winding roads of Troll’s path with its hair pin bends. You will make several stops on the way to take the pictures of the surrounding breath taking scenery. In the evening you will arrive at your hotel near the village of Andalsnes on the Romsdalfjord.

Andalsnes to Bodo

After breakfast, we will commence our journey by boarding the Rauma Railway, one of Norway’s wildest and most beautiful train journeys, which will take you to Dombas. Here, board the Dovre Railway to cross the Dovrejfell mountain range, up to Trondheim . Transfer to the airport to board the flight to Bodo. Check-in at the hotel in the city centre in Bodo for dinner and an overnight stay.

Bodo to Svolvaer

From Bodø, we will take a ferry to reach the village of Moskenes, the southern end of the most scenic Lofoten Islands. We will reach Moskenes and then visit the tip of the Lofoten Islands. We will take in the scenic E 10 highway stopping at tiny villages for pictures and soaking in the surrounding. Dinner will be arranged in the hotel and later we will go to the open sea to catch the midnight sun. Overnight in Svolvær, a fishing village on the Island.

We would wake up late and have a leisurely breakfast. In the morning we will first visit the village of Hennigsvaer where the houses are beautifully located on the bay. Later we will head out to the narrow Trollfjord on a Sea Eagle Safari on a local boat where we would also have a chance to do some fishing. On our return to the hotel, we will have an evening at leisure.

Svolvaer - Senja

We will continue this morning on the E 10 before branching out to the island of Andoya and on it the port town of Andenes. From Andenes, we will take the ferry on first the open sea and then through the Gryllefjord to reach the Island of Senja. The Island, a cousin of the Lofoten Islands, gives it tough competition in terms of the scenery. However the less number of people coming here means greater peace, and this is where it is different. The stay tonight is adjacent to the North Sea in fishing cabins. We will have yet another chance to see the midnight sun tonight.

Senja - Tromso

After breakfast, we will take our last ferry of the tour to the Island of Tromsø. Once in Tromsø, we will have a city tour and take the cable car to the top to catch a breathtaking view of this city. Dinner and overnight stay at the hotel in Tromso.

Tromso - Mumbai

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Oslo and to Mumbai from there.

Norway is the star of Scandinavia. Also, in Norway, the scenery in the Fjordland and the Arctics will steal your breath away.

The Norway tour is for people who do not want to indulge in city sightseeing tours and just want to be with nature. If you want to experience the best of both Cities and Nature then Scandinavia Summer would be a better option.

Norway is far up north and so the choice of veggies is limited, however, we take care that the vegetarians do not sleep hungry. There is a lot of fish on offer, especially Salmon.

The more time one spends above the Arctics in Norway, the costlier the tour gets. As we spend 5 nights above the Arctic Circle out of the 8 nights on the tour our tour spends time in the most beautiful place in Europe but there is a price to pay for this experience.

Top 5 airlines flying to Norway

All good- I love BA and the professionalism of the crew and pilots.

Great flight- smooth, nice crew, nice clean aircraft, departed a little late but arrived 10 early.

It was listed on my ticket as Finnair but there was no indication that the flight was Finnair. In fact the number was even different. There were no employees there until exactly 2 hours before so we had to wait in line at Iberia and hope

Sorting on line would have been appreciated Onward information on flights missed No ability to get seating arranged before we got to gate Very unfriendly at gate

The flight was Finnair but there was no indications anywhere that the checkin was for Finnair also. There was no one to ask. I think at a minimum they should list the code shares so people don’t stand in the wrong line for an hour.

I booked the flight with Finnair, which made the arrangements for downloading a boarding pass unnecessarily complicated. I wouldn't do that again. Instead I'd book direct with AA.

Flight ok, but me and other two passengers didn’t have connection with the entertainment in our seats. So, no movies, no games, no music… for 9 hours. The crew just told us that there’s nothing they can do but I noticed during the flight that there were empty seats, so they could have offered to us to change seats. Customer service could be better.

Had a nice flight to London on BA will fly with them again in the future

Finnair cancelled my flight 12 hours prior to leaving for Helsinki. They stated there were mechanical problems. I had to scurry around to find a new flight that would meet my needs for arrival in Helsinki. Luckily I was able to find alternate transportation through Lufthansa/United.

I’m very disappointed, to fly into an airplane for 10 straight hours, and not having a TV even though when I put the ticket I was told that I will have entertainment for the TV. Very disappointed.

It was a long flight but overall a good one. The one thing that I would comment on is that there is a real problem with disposable plastic products when it comes to the meal service. It would be great for Qatar Airways to find ways to make its meal service more circular and reduce the immense amount of waste.

they give hard time at checking, they not allow computer bag or purse

There’s lots of problem I faced from Bom to Doha that experience was worst I never faced before like this

Overall it was a very good experience. Boarding was efficient and well organized. The cabin crew were excellent. The meals were tasty and quite filling. The warm bread rolls were a nice touch. Seats were comfortable even if they were a little narrow. Entertainment selection was excellent.

This is my first and last flight with Qatar because when we go for boarding pass in Delhi airport the team asked for money charging me for hand baggage which is technically including with my ticket so also we get one our temple pics I ask them to checking in but they tell me I have to pay $500 dollars for that additional which is not make sense than I diseased to throw away because I can’t take with us . For carry in beg also I pay some Indian n currency for the guy who help I already pay 6 passengers ticket cost me $8000 so really I’m not happy . PLUS MY 6 checked baggage was damaged I already claim for four beg at airport but now I’m worried about my stuff inside maybe broken too which is more expensive stuff me really bad experience

My seat that I booked over a year ago and some other passenger was sitting in it. They said they could not walk and they would not move. I was with my young kid and the crew did nothing to accommodate that. Just disappointed that the airline accepts that excuse from a passenger.

They shld improve and provide a lunch or dinner in an international leg

The crew was courteous and efficient. There was no entertainment or liquor service on this short international flight.

Just money making business. This was my fourth journey with Qatar Airways, year by year the quality of service getting poor. Food is very cheap. They have some low quality alcohol beverages. They don’t have any brandy or cognac. No toilet around the gate lounge. We have to wait until getting to the flight for use toilet.very long standing for entering into the flight. We can see the old passenger suffering.

They have misplaced my one checked bag which I have not received in Philadelphia and have lodged complaint with American Airlines, the staff of Indigo was rude with us, at the checking counter, I think she purposely withheld my one of the checked bag, because the American Airlines staff told me that bag was not received at Doha airport. Kindly help me with one of my checked bag to get it. My flight was from Mumbai to Doha and then Doha to Philadelphia.

All good. Didn’t get the seats I booked online. Luckily, copassanger cooperated! Mistake- I failed to verify connecting flight seats details at Mumbai. Staff at Mumbai airport to be blamed equally!

My flight was cancelled and I went through hell to get it fixed, with no help from the website I booked it on. My reservation was cancelled AGAIN by the site I booked on without my knowledge a week later. The flight itself that I finally got on was awful. Drunk man belligerent the entire flight, I don't understand how he was allowed on the flight.

I didn’t use Entertainment so, no comments on it. Staff was courteous, efficient and helpful. Wines (I also tried Polish White wine) were really good, so also the food. The accessories provided were good (a goodnight chocolate would have enriched the experience 😀) Originally flight reached before time but we didn’t understand why it was sidelined for almost half an hour and also, luggage was delivered quite late (20-25 minutes) and that too after changing belt! That need not be LOT’s fault! Overall, I would certainly like to travel again with LOT, worth recommending!

no kiosks to check in with- it’s 2024!!! the flight was so hot and uncomfortable - not sure if that’s what caused a lady to faint during the flight but i was absolutely miserable.

I wrote about this leg of my itinerary in a previous part of this review

Very poor, flight cancelled, no help from Lufthansa customer service.

terrible. they cancelled the flight 1 day before flying out and just sent an email to inform the same. i had to scramble on my own paying more to find another flight.

The flight was cancelled, and no reason was given. The flight was rebooked 3 days later. Calling customer service was next to impossible. There was no option to get in a queue in the phone call. It simply said all agents are busy call back later. It is 2024 and not 1970s to have such outdated technology. Live chat was even worse as I was 753 in line and it kept getting timed out. The icing on the cake was that the working hours was something like 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM? Really for international airline when the flights usually depart early in the morning? Things only got worse in the check-in counter in Mumbai. The monitor in the check-in counter said that the flight was on time even though it was cancelled. There were 2 agents helping a 747 full of passengers. It was 5:30 AM by the time I checked into the hotel. I tried reaching Kayak (Chatdeal via email) days before the onward flight from Seattle and no one cared to respond even after reminder. I will go with Expedia in the future. In fact, for my next trip to Japan I have already used Expedia.

Very very poor. Reliability is the main issue. The flight from Bangalore to Frankfurt was delayed by 8 hours and hence we couldn’t make the flight from Frankfurt to St. Louis ( which was later canceled by Lufthansa ) . Bangalore airport lounge 080 is EXCELLENT. The shower in the lounge is first class. Wished they had some extendable lounge chairs for sleeping for the weary passengers. FRANKFURT AIRPORT IS HORRIBLE! WILL NEVER EVER FLY IN OR OUT OF FRANKFURT. There is no jetways for the Lufthansa flight and the bus took so long to reach the next terminal. We had to clear immigration and security checks again and again though we are transit travelers.

Ended up canceling the tickets with Lufthansa because they need extra visa for changing terminal for layover at Frankfurt airport.

Delayed, took forever to get luggage out of the flight. Worst short flight within Europe we've had.

United tried to bump me. We pay good money to get on the plane we are scheduled to ride in. To hell with United Airlines.

Flight was delayed and caused us to miss connection in IAD. Then bags didn’t arrive at bag claim until 1.25 hours after flight landed.

There was some delay at Heathrow where a machine needed to "start the engines" wasn't available and they couldn't even find the team tasked to do it. Unacceptable. Caused about an hour delay and seemed unnecessary. Also saw several passengers abusing the overhead luggage situation, having too many large bags and not leaving enough space for others. The crew was good and the refreshments were good in quality and quantity.

Very Stress free Lounges were superb. Crews were caring. I loved it.

The layover time was barely 1.30 hrs and the security clearance sucks. I almost missed my flight but for the help of a manger. She held the flight for me. My baggage did not arrive. The entertainment did not work, I had to switch my seat 3 times for different issues. The travel was not fun

It took over an hour to check in my bag a there was just one person at the counter. Security lines for business class also took a while. Although I reported 3 hours before my flight I made it to the gate 20 mins before boarding. To add to that jewelry was removed from my checked in baggage. I am submitting a separate complaint to Mumbai airport for that.

Great and pleasant service and smooth flight with wonderful and clean amenities.

It was ok but not at a business class standard No entertainment system available which is poor for a 3+ hour journey Food was ok and service was good though

International flight from CCU to MIA . paid 1235 dollars at this low season. NO CHECK IN BAGGGAE ALLOWED ?????????????? NOT EVEN ONE?????????? Never ever I will even thing about buying tickets and flying with them again. Just A BIG NO

Biz class has a middle seat. 🙄. WiFi only for first class. No free seat assignments. Basically nickel and dime approach. They need to take lessons from Singapore Air and the likes. Never again.

I have not used food or entertainment all other services I used were simply excellent. BA crew is always good in service. The BA Crew at anygiven flight is simply amazing.

I was rebooked on Delta. Did not take this flight

Never Ending Footsteps

The Cost of Travel in Norway: A 2023 Budget Breakdown

trip to norway cost from india

Is Norway expensive? This Scandinavian country has a reputation for being one of the most expensive countries on the planet, but how accurate are the rumours?

Well, I hate to break it to you, but, uh, yeah, they’re pretty accurate.

Personally, I’ve travelled to a hundred countries over the past decade and Norway? It easily makes the top three when it comes to expensive countries.

It’s not all bad news, however, as I found tons of way to cut costs and find great value for money. Whether it’s taking the bus over the train, seeking out street food instead of eating in restaurants, or opting for comfortable guesthouses over high-end hotels, there are plenty of ways to keep on budget.

I’ve been keeping track of every single dollar I’ve spent over my past 11 years of travel, and I love distilling that information into detailed budget breakdowns. In these articles, I aim to share exactly how much I spent while travelling, covering budgets for all different kind of travellers, and ways in which you can lower your costs.

Today it’s Norway’s turn, so let’s get started.

Lauren in Bergen

The Cost of Accommodation in Norway

You can visit Norway on a whole range of budgets, from a €27 a night dorm bed in a hostel to an absolutely incredible €400-a-night snow hotel , the latter of which is a dream hotel of mine. One day I’ll get to stay there!

In this blog post, I’m going to be focusing on value . Because whether you’re travelling as a solo backpacker on a shoestring, as part of a couple on a mid-range budget, or as a family looking for a little luxury, value is the one thing you’re going to be looking for. That doesn’t mean cheap — it means offering up more than similarly-priced options.

There’s some seriously expensive accommodation up for grabs in Norway, so to start with, I’m going to cover the cheapest way to travel the country.

If you’re on the tightest of tight budgets, there are several options that’ll land you with free accommodation  while you’re in the country. Courchsurfing allows you to connect with locals by sleeping on spare sofas in their homes. It doesn’t cost a penny to do so and is a fantastic way to gain an insight into Norweigan daily life away from the tourists. There are 350,000 hosts in Norway, so there’s sure to be someone who’s right for you.

Housesitting is a more upmarket way to avoid paying for accommodation, as it’s aimed at the mid-range and luxury travellers. You’ll be looking after homes and pets while their owners are on holiday, and the houses can be extremely luxurious. This option works best if you don’t have fixed travel dates, as you’ll be agreeing to dates that the owners set.

Finally, when it comes to free accommodation, you could take a look at WorldPackers in Norway , where you’ll be able to volunteer for locals in exchange for food and board. There are some seriously cool options available on the site, from helping to form a hiking trail in the wildness to lending a hand at building an eco-sanctuary in a forest. Readers of this site get a $10 discount for WorldPackers with the promo code neverendingfootsteps .

If you’re not looking to travel for free and just want a clean and comfortable room to sleep in, there are plenty of great options, too.

One of the most affordable ways to explore Norway is by staying in a hostel. I stayed in several over my first visit to the country and was impressed by the quality of the hostels, although there unfortunately isn’t much to choose from. Let’s look at the best-reviewed hostels in the country.

  • The best hostel in Oslo is easily Cochs Pensjonat , where budget single rooms are priced at just €55 per person , and private doubles come in at €70 per night . As an added bonus, you’re not staying in a hostel! This is a clean and simple budget hotel that’s located in the heart of Oslo.
  • In Bergen , you can’t get better than City Hostel Bergen , where the dorms are €27 per night and the private double rooms are €62 a night . In a town where most hostels are rated poorly, this well-reviewed spot is a no-brainer.
  • You’ll likely be heading to Trondheim while you’re in Norway, and if so, I recommend City Living Sentrum Hotel , which has double rooms for €81 a night . It’s in a great location for sightseeing and spotlessly clean.
  • Tromsø is home to Tromso CoCo Apartments , where dorms are priced at €25 a night . No wonder it’s the best-rated budget accommodation in town, with its great location, friendly staff, and access to an extremely well-equipped kitchen.
  • What about Stavanger ? Cozee Central Apartments is the only place I’d consider staying. Not only is it inexpensive at €65 a night for a studio with double bed, but the beds are comfortable, the location perfect, and the surroundings peaceful.
  • And finally, Ålesund , where you have to stay at Ålesund downtown loft room (double rooms are €61 a night ). It’s a cosy property, right in the heart of town, with a well-equipped kitchenette, which helps to save money on meals.

Overall, then, you can see that you can expect to spend around €30 a night  for dorms in Norway — but that they’re pretty hard to find in this country, and around €60-80 a night  for the cheapest double rooms in each destination.

Okay, but what if you’re not a budget traveller and just want to stay in a lovely, well-reviewed hotel or guesthouse that’s good value for money and has all the things you need from a place to lay your head? I’ve got you! For around €120-200 a night , you’ll be able to stay in an excellently-reviewed hotel, in a central location, with friendly staff.

My 2023 Accommodation Recommendations for Norway

When I’m travelling, I’m always conscious to book the absolute best accommodation out there — well, as long as it doesn’t amount to hundreds of dollars a night. I can easily spend several hours researching accommodation for every stop along my way, ensuring I’ve chosen the place in the best location with the friendliest staff, and the greatest value for money.

My biggest tip? When you head to Booking to find a hotel, ignore the results that are sorted under “Our Top Picks” — that’s a list of all of the hotels that pay Booking the highest commission, some of which have some pretty poor write-ups. Instead, opt to sort the properties by “Top Reviewed”. That way, you’ll be able to see which options genuinely have the best reviews.

But all that to say, when I was planning my trip to Norway, I put in the hard work so you don’t have to. Here’s where I recommend staying:

Oslo: Camillas Hus ( €252 a night for a double room) — Kick-off your Norway adventures with the best-rated hotel in town! Camillas Hus is an exceptional property, in the perfect location for getting your tourist on in Oslo. Staff are welcoming and eager to share how to make the most of your time in the city, and the designs of the room so tasteful. I love this place and can’t recommend it highly enough.

Bergen: Opus 16 ( €176 a night for a double room) — I’d never recommend that you stay in a place just to experience the breakfast, but I will say that the breakfast offerings at Opus 16 are gorgeous. It’s in a great location for exploring Bergen, close to the action but away from the noise, and there’s even a well-equipped gym, for those of you who try to keep up with the workouts while you’re away. Definitely consider this property if you’re going to be heading to Bergen.

Trondheim : Thon Hotel Nidaros ( €181 a night for a Queen room) — Excellent breakfast, excellent location, and excellent staff make this a, um, excellent place to stay! What I love most about this hotel is the fact that not only is breakfast complementary, but there’s also a complementary buffet in the evening — both delicious! What this means is that you can completely slash — if not eliminate — your food costs in Norway. That can easily save you €50+ a day! All in all, this is a great place in Trondheim for everyone.

Tromsø : BraMy Apartments ( €183 a night for a studio apartment) — The best part of this apartment? The fact that you can sit in your apartment and see the Northern Lights through the window! The apartment is clean and cosy, there’s a washer-dryer to use (always useful on holiday!), and a well-equipped kitchen. Throw in some extremely comfortable beds and you’ve got yourself a perfect stay in Tromsø!

Stavanger : Darby’s Inn ( €152 a night for a double room) — This wonderful B&B is the highest-rated property in town, and it’s easy to see why. It’s beautifully-decorated inside, the breakfast is tasty and filling, the location places you minutes from the centre of town, but on a quiet road, and, quite frankly: being there feels like being at home. When you take into account the relatively low price, there’s no reason to even look at staying anywhere else.

Ålesund : Hotel 1904 ( €183 a night for a double room) — Hotel 1904 is a boutique hotel that, as the name suggests, has been standing since 1904. You wouldn’t know it from the interior, however, as the clean, modern furnishings give off such a calming, contemporary vibe. The rooms, themselves, are enormous, the restaurant offers a great breakfast, and the staff are very accommodating. I wouldn’t recommend staying anywhere else in Ålesund.

The Cost of Transportation in Norway

When it comes to transportation in Norway, prepare for plenty of trains. Unusually, trains are more affordable (and more comfortable!) than buses in this country, so I’d always recommend riding the rails over anything else.

Norway is home to the famous Flåm railway, which is known as the most beautiful train ride in the world. The views are absolutely stunning on this route, as you’d expect, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. The train runs between Flåm and Myrdal — a distance of 20 kilometres — and it takes around two hours to complete the full round-trip. It costs €50 per person , which isn’t too bad for Norway.

But what about the non-scenic railway routes? Well, first of all, all train journeys in this country are picturesque, but the route between Oslo and Bergen is a particular favourite of mine. You can book train tickets through Vy in Norway — I paid €30 for the seven-hour train between Oslo and Bergen.

You can utilise the railways all over Norway, but if you’re planning on venturing north to see the Northern Lights, it would be worth checking out the cost of domestic flights. I use Skyscanner to compare the cost of airlines. An an example, to travel from Oslo to Tromsø, you can expect to pay around €40 for a direct flight. To travel overland, you’d either need to drive for 24 hours, or take the train to Bodø for 18 hours, then tackle eight hours by bus or 24 hours by ferry to get to Tromsø — you’d be looking at €100 for the pleasure, too. No question: you’d definitely want to fly.

Now, if you’re anything like me, you love a road trip. Having your own set of wheels can significantly enhance your travel experience. You’ll be able to stop off at beautiful viewpoints, take your time with getting from one destination to the next, and transport your belongings more easily from A to B. Driving in Norway is a pleasure, so if you do feel, uh, driven to hire a car, I definitely recommend going for it. Norwegians are safe and respectful drivers, so you won’t have to worry about safety and it’s all very easy. The only downside is that it can be tough to find a hotel with free parking and you could find yourself paying €25 a day to park elsewhere.

Every city in Norway is very walkable, so within the stops on your trip, you won’t need to worry about transportation costs. I walked absolutely everywhere — even in Oslo — and never once found it difficult or tiring to do so.

The Cost of Food in Norway

Norwegian food isn’t widely known or revered, which I believe is a huge oversight. Norway has tons of delicious dishes for travellers to sample, and not all of them will hurt your bank balance. I found myself eating a lot of street food while I was in Norway, actually, and could regularly snap up a meal for as little as €7 . Kebab shops and pizzerias offered meals for €10-12 per person.

With such an extensive coastline, you won’t be surprised to hear that Norwegian dishes are concentrated around the abundance of the country’s sea-life. The cold, long winters inspired locals to preserve their foods, to ensure the summer’s produce could sustain them year-round. What that means is that you should prepare yourself some of the best, and freshest, seafood on the planet. If you eat meat, you’ll be able to sample some truly unusual game, such as reindeer, moose, elk, and grouse. That’s not all: you’ll also find sweet berries, fluffy waffled, and crisp ciders, and some of the best cheeses in the world.

If you like a drink when you travel, can I suggest switching to water instead? Haha. Prices of beer, wine, and cocktails are high — think €10 for a pint of beer. Don’t expect to find a bottle of wine in a restaurant for less than €50 . Instead of drinking with your meal, head to the local supermarkets or off-licenses instead. There, you’ll find a half-litre bottle of beer for a much more reasonable €3.50 .

Vegetarians and vegans are going to struggle in Norway, although that probably isn’t a surprise for you to hear. This country is very focused on its seafood and meats, and if Norwegians aren’t eating meat, they’re opting for dairy instead. You’ll be totally fine in Oslo, and mostly fine in Bergen, as there are enough restaurants that cater to vegetarians and vegans in both towns. Be prepared for slim-pickings as you travel to small towns, expect to eat plenty of salads, and plan to regularly visit supermarkets to ensure you’re getting all your nutrients. The good news is that everybody in Norway speaks English, so you won’t have to worry about communication issues landing you with an unexpected slice of fish in your salads.

If you don’t have a vast budget to allocate to food in Norway, I recommend taking full advantage of the hotel breakfast. The vast majority of hotels and hostels in this country include breakfast in the price, and so you can use this to save on food. I’d usually eat as much as I could at the breakfast buffet, skip lunch, and then either head to a fast food restaurant for dinner, or venture to a supermarket to make my own mini-picnic with the local produce.

Breakfasts are large in Norway, offering up bread, yoghurt, cheeses, eggs, fresh and pickled fish, meats, and honey, all washed down with a cup of coffee or tea.

One of my favourite Norwegian lunch options is smørbrød, which is an open-top sandwich, with an enormous amount of fun toppings. You’ll see them all over the countries, in the windows of the local cafes and delis, usually priced at around €12 . Take a look out for the meal of the day in local restaurants. As in many European countries, you’ll be able to grab yourself a fish or meat dish, with fries, a drink, and a salad for as little as €16 .

I managed to average just €22 a day for food in Norway, simply by filling up with the hotel breakfasts, then opting for a cheaper meal for dinner (pizzas, stews, burgers, and fresh Atlantic cod.)

The Cost of Activities and Entrance Fees in Norway

Next, let’s take a look at how much you can expect to spend on activities in Norway.

If you’re going to be spending a few days in Oslo, I recommend picking up an Oslo Pass for €42 . As long as you’re planning on visiting a couple of attractions in the city, it will save you money. The pass gives you access to over 30 museums (most of which are around €10-15 to enter), as well as unlimited free travel on public transport within the city, whether it’s by metro, bus, tram, local trains, or even the ferry. You gain access to several walking tours across the city and entrance to the open-air public baths.

Most people opt to explore the fjords of Norway from the west coast of the country, but you can actually take a fantastic fjord tour from Oslo. This two-hour sightseeing cruise costs just €36 and takes you out to see the many islands and colourful houses that line the Oslo Fjord.

If you don’t decide to opt for the Oslo Pass, there are several museums and attractions that I highly recommend visiting:

  • Holmenkollen ski jump: €15
  • Oslo Viking Ship Museum: €10
  • Akershus Fortress: free
  • Munch Museum: €17
  • Norwegian Museum of Cultural History: €17

As you travel to Bergen, you’ll find yourself in the perfect location for exploring Norway’s fjords. Dozens of tours leave from the town every single day, so you’ll be able to shop around and find a tour that’s right for you. If you want to book in advance, you’ll be looking at €97 for a three-hour cruise from Bergen to the picturesque Alversund Streams .

Moving further north, you’ll have a whole wealth of exciting activities to check out while you’re in Tromsø. This is Northern Lights country, with reindeers and dog sledding and ice domes galore. You’ll be up for €120 for an Aurora Borealis small-group tour , can try your hands at reindeer-sledding and feeding for €137 , and €189 for the extremely-popular self-drive husky dog-sledding adventure .

The Cost of Travel Insurance in Norway

If you’ve read any other posts on Never Ending Footsteps, you’ll know that I’m a great believer in travelling with travel insurance. I’ve seen far too many Go Fund Me campaigns from destitute backpackers that are unexpectedly stranded in a foreign country after a scooter accident/being attacked/breaking a leg with no way of getting home or paying for their healthcare. These costs can quickly land you with a six-figure bill to pay at the end of it.

In short, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.

Travel insurance  will cover you if your flight is cancelled and you need to book a new one, if your luggage gets lost and you need to replace your belongings, if you suddenly get struck down by appendicitis and have to be hospitalised, or discover a family member has died and you need to get home immediately. If you fall seriously ill, your insurance will cover the costs to fly you home to receive medical treatment.

I use  SafetyWing  as my travel insurance provider, and recommend them for trips to the Norway. Firstly, they’re one of the few companies out there who will actually cover you if you contract COVID-19. On top of that, they provide worldwide coverage, don’t require you to have a return ticket, and even allow you to buy coverage after you’ve left home. If you’re on a long-term trip, you can pay monthly instead of up-front, and can cancel at any time. Finally, they’re more affordable than the competition, and have a clear, easy-to-understand pricing structure, which is always appreciated.

With SafetyWing, you’ll pay  $1.50 a day  for travel insurance.

You can buy original tickets for New Edition's 2024 Las Vegas residency concert dates and music festival appearance on Ticketmaster. However, since the residency extension shows went on sale in March 2024, the quantity of remaining original tickets is limited.

Tickets can also be purchased from verified resale vendors like StubHub and Vivid Seats . You may have better luck with the variety of seating options and availability on resale sites compared to the original tickets still left.

It's also important to note that New Edition's shows at the Encore Theater in Las Vegas only permit concertgoers ages 18 and up — so be sure to bring your ID to get into the group's residency performances.

How much are New Edition's tickets?

Given the high demand for the group's remaining Las Vegas residency shows, tickets to see New Edition in 2024 are relatively expensive. Furthermore, ticket prices vary depending on each show's concert date and demand. Resale ticket prices are comparable to or cheaper than original ticket costs.

The cheapest original ticket prices on Ticketmaster begin at $175 for New Edition's Las Vegas shows on October 30 and November 1. The least expensive seats are generally in the left or right mezzanine. However, most other dates with remaining original tickets are a bit more costly, with the cheapest seats coming in at over $200.

On the other hand, original one-day Saturday tickets for New Edition's Cincinnati Music Festival performance start at only $65. This ticket also lets you see artists like Kem, Stokley, En Vogue, and Coco Jones. Check out the full line-up here .

The least expensive resale tickets available to New Edition's Las Vegas residency on StubHub start at $165 for the group's July 5 performance. Vivid Seats offers similar prices for resale tickets, as the cheapest available Las Vegas show passes begin at $165. However, both sites' base fares are slightly more expensive than the $65 original tickets for the Cincinnati Music Festival, as StubHub's begin at $72 while Vivid Seats' start at $73.

Tesla shares under pressure after carmaker announces price cuts

CEO Elon Musk postpones India trip ahead of results expected to show worst performance in seven years

  • Business live – latest updates

Shares in Tesla came under pressure on Monday after the electric carmaker announced a round of price cuts ahead of a difficult set of results for the company’s chief executive, Elon Musk.

Tesla stock fell as much as 5% in early trading before recovering slightly to a deficit of 3.4% in the wake of the price reductions around the globe, including slashing the cost of three of its leading electric vehicles (EVs) and its self-driving software.

Musk revealed at the weekend that he had postponed a trip to India , including a planned meeting with the prime minister, Narendra Modi, because of “very heavy obligations” at the company.

The CEO faces a key conference call with the investment community on Tuesday, when Tesla’s latest quarterly figures are expected to reveal its worst performance in seven years.

Tesla’s results come amid slowing global demand for EVs and pressure on prices from Chinese rivals. The company has already indicated a poor first quarter in terms of sales, after it revealed this month that deliveries missed market expectations by about 13% .

Tesla attempted to boost demand for its EVs late on Friday by cutting the prices of three of its five models in the US, then went on to cut prices around the world over the weekend, including in China, the Middle East, Africa and Europe.

It cut the US prices of the Model Y, Tesla’s most popular model and the top-selling EV, and also of the older and more expensive Models X and S. Those cuts reduced the starting price for a Model Y to $42,990 (£34,874), and to $72,990 for a Model S and $77,990 for a Model X. It also slashed the US price of its Full Self-Driving driver assistance software from $12,000 to $8,000.

It also emerged on Friday that Tesla was recalling all 3,878 Cybertrucks it has shipped since the vehicle was released in late 2023 because of a faulty accelerator pedal. A filing from the US safety regulator said owners had reported that the pedal pad could come loose and get lodged in the interior trim, causing the vehicle to accelerate unintentionally, increasing the risk of a crash.

Dan Ives, the managing director of the US financial services firm Wedbush Securities, said investors’ reaction to the price cuts on Monday showed they were worried “Tesla is panicking”, as well as reflecting concerns that the reductions would hit margins – a measure of profitability.

Tesla has already reacted to the slowdown by cutting more than 10% of its global workforce , equivalent to at least 14,000 roles.

Musk faces questions on Tuesday about growth in China, plans for a cheaper electric car known as the Model 2 and whether a reported switch in focus to self-driving robotaxis will affect the project. Shares in Tesla have declined more than 40% so far this year. Analysts at Wedbush wrote last week that Tuesday’s conference call represented a “moment of truth” for Musk and Tesla.

after newsletter promotion

“While we have seen much more tenuous times in the Tesla story going back to 2015, 2018, 2020 … this time is clearly a bit different as for the first time many longtime Tesla believers are giving up on the story and throwing in the white towel,” Wedbush wrote in a note to investors.

Reuters reported this month that Tesla had halted development of the Model 2, prompting Musk to post on X that “Reuters is lying”, without citing any inaccuracies.

Musk said this weekend he would reschedule the India trip to a later date this year. He had been due to visit on 21 April and 22 April, where he had been expected to announce an investment of $2bn-3bn in India, according to Reuters, with the spending plans focused on building a new plant.

Musk’s now-postponed visit to Delhi had also been expected to include meetings with executives at space industry startups. The billionaire is awaiting Indian government regulatory approvals to begin offering his Starlink satellite broadband service in the country.
