United States Visitor Visa (B1/B2)

International students planning on traveling to the United States for personal travel or to attend a conference will need a U.S. Visitor’s Visa if they are a citizen of a country that is currently not part of the U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP) .

How to Apply for a U.S. Visitor Visa

All applicants in Canada between the ages of 14 and 79 intending to apply for U.S. Visitor Visa while in Canada may need to apply in person at a U.S. Consulate or Embassy. Those in London, Ontario should schedule an interview at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto. To apply, you must first submit your application and make an appointment online.

Step 1: Fill out the DS-160 Application Form

  • Complete the visa application form (DS-160) online (handwritten applications are no longer accepted). Print the confirmation number. You will need to indicate the confirmation number from the DS-160 application form when booking your appointment.
  • Have your passport information available.
  • Review the general information on the application process

Step 2: Login to the U.S. Non-Immigrant Visa Applicant Website

  • Create a user account
  • Enter the DS-160 confirmation number for each applicant applying for a Visa
  • Complete the courier document return process
  • Citizens of certain countries may have to pay an additional "reciprocity fee" if a visa is approved
  • Schedule a Consular Section appointment

Students are advised to make an appointment and apply for their U.S. Visitor Visa well in advance of their planned trip to the United States as it can sometimes take several weeks or months to get an appointment date.

Personal Appearance Wavier (PAW) Program

As of October 2014, "certain qualified individuals [can] apply for a visa to the U.S. without being interviewed.” Under this new program, “applicants will be informed of their eleigibility for the PAW program when they apply for a visa appointment at canada.usvisa-info.com . Qualified individuals will be instructed to submit their applications by mail, saving the time and expense of a visit to a U.S. consular facility.

In addition, some other first-time visa applicants such as children applying before their 14th birthday and applicants over the age of 79 are exempt from personal appearance and will be informed of their eligibility for the PAW through the online appointment system.” 1

Step 3: Prepare the Required Documentation

  • Prepare the documents you may need for the interview.
  • Review information for visa applicants at the travel.state.gov website

Note: If you have been exempted from attending an in-person appointment under the Personal Appearance Waiver Program, you must submit all required supporting documentation in the application package.

You can view current visa processing times online.

Attend an appointment in-person, unless you have been exempted under the Personal Appearance Wavier Program.

Ensure that you bring all of the required documents (see Step 3 above) to your appointment. Review the security procedures for the U.S. Consulate.

Note that the entrance for visa appointments at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto is at 225 Simcoe Street.

Applicants whose visas are not issued will be given back their passports and a letter explaining the reason for the refusal at the end of the visa interview.

Step 4: Visit the U.S. Non-Immigrant Visa Applicant Website

Visit the U.S. Non-Immigrant Visa Applicant website for information on your visa status and delivery.

Visa Waiver Program (VWP) travelers are required to obtain a travel authorization online via the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) prior to boarding a carrier to travel by air or sea to the U.S. (there is a registration fee for this).

Entering and departing the united states - form 1-94/i-94w.

When you enter the United States, you may be issued an Arrival/Departure Record (I-94) or a stamp that will be placed in your passport which will include the date by which you must leave the United States.

Note: The I-94 and I-94W process has been automated, and air and sea travelers no longer need to complete the paper Form I-94 or I-94W. A stamp will be place in their passport.

If you are not issued an I-94, but would like to retrieve your own I-94 information, you can access it online .

If you are travelling to Canada by land through the United States, it is important that you hand in the I-94 form to the U.S. border officials when you leave the United States. Advance travel planning and early visa application are important. If you plan to apply for a nonimmigrant visa to come to the United States as a temporary visitor, please review the current wait time for an interview using the tool below. Not all visa applications can be completed on the day of the interview; please read the information below for more details .

Check the estimated wait time for a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment at a U.S. Embassy or Consulate.

Note: Please check the individual Embassy or Consulate website to determine if your case is eligible for a waiver of the in-person interview.

Applicants scheduling visa appointments in a location different from their place of residence should check post websites for nonresident wait times.

Select a U.S. Embassy or Consulate:

Global Visa Wait Times

Wait Time for Interview

The estimated wait time to receive a nonimmigrant visa interview appointment at a U.S. embassy or consulate and is based on workload and staffing and can vary from week to week. The information provided is an estimate and does not guarantee the availability of an appointment.

Wait Time for Interview Waiver

Wait times for applicants eligible for Interview Waiver are applicable only for locations where applicants schedule appointments to submit their passport and any required documents to a U.S. embassy or consulate. The wait time estimate does not account for the time required for a consular officer to adjudicate the application nor mailing time of passports or other documents. Refer to the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section where you will apply to determine your eligibility for Interview Waiver and for instructions for submitting a nonimmigrant visa application. Note that applicants must be a national or resident of the country where they are applying to be eligible to apply via Interview Waiver.

Qualifications for an Expedited Interview Appointment

Consular sections overseas may be able to expedite your interview date if there is an urgent, unforeseen situation such as a funeral, medical emergency, or school start date. The process to request an expedited nonimmigrant visa interview varies by location. You should refer to the instructions on the website of the Embassy or Consulate Visa Section  where you will interview, or on their online appointment scheduling site. You will need to provide proof of the need for an earlier appointment.

In all cases : You must first submit the online visa application form (DS-160), pay the application fee, and schedule the first available interview appointment. Only at this point will a consular section consider your request for an expedited appointment.

Note: Travel for the purpose of attending weddings and graduation ceremonies, assisting pregnant relatives, participating in an annual business/academic/professional conference, or enjoying last-minute tourism does not qualify for expedited appointments. For such travel, please schedule a regular visa appointment well in advance.

These estimates do not include time required for administrative processing, which may affect some applications. When administrative processing is required, the timing will vary based on individual circumstances of each case.

There are only two possible outcomes for U.S. visa applications. The consular officer will either issue or refuse the visa. If a visa applicant has not established that he or she is eligible for a visa, the consular officer must refuse that application. However, some refused visa applications may require further administrative processing. When administrative processing is required, the consular officer will inform the applicant at the end of the interview. The duration of the administrative processing will vary based on the individual circumstances of each case. At the conclusion of the administrative processing period, the consular officer might conclude that an applicant is now qualified for the visa for which he or she applied. The officer may also conclude that the applicant remains ineligible for a visa. Visa applicants are reminded to apply early for their visas, well in advance of the anticipated travel date.

Important Notice:   Except in cases of emergency travel (i.e. serious illnesses, injuries, or deaths in your immediate family), before making inquiries about status of administrative processing, applicants should wait at least 180 days from the date of interview or submission of supplemental documents, whichever is later.

About Visa Processing Wait Times – Nonimmigrant Visa Applicants

Information about nonimmigrant visa wait times for interviews and visa processing time frames are shown on this website, as well as on U.S. Embassy and Consulate websites worldwide. It should be noted that the “Wait Times for a Nonimmigrant Visa to be Processed” information by country does not include time required for administrative processing. Processing wait time also does not include the time required to return the passport to applicants, by either courier services or the local mail system.

In addition, it is important to thoroughly review all information on the specific  Embassy or Consulate Visa Section website  for local procedures and instructions, such as how to make an interview appointment. Embassy and Consulate websites will also explain any additional procedures for students, exchange visitors and those persons who need an earlier visa interview appointment.

About Wait Times

* Calendar days refers to every day of the week, including days when embassies are closed (such as weekends and holidays).

† Work days refers only to days when the embassy is open and does not include weekends and holidays.

‡ A, G, and NATO applications are excluded from these wait times, as they are processed separately.

Most Canadian citizens do not need a visa to travel to the United States. However, there are a few specific instances in which Canadians will need to obtain a visa before entering the U.S. If you fall into any of these narrow categories, you’ll need to apply for—and obtain—a U.S. visa. All visa applications must be made online. You can apply for a visa online through the U.S. State Department website. Prior to receiving your American visa, you’ll need to appear for an in-person interview at the U.S. embassy in Ottawa, or at any of 6 consulates in Canada.

Determining Which Visa You Need

Step 1 Apply for a non-immigrant visa if you are traveling into the U.S.

  • Apply for an A visa if you’re a Canadian government official entering the U.S. for a work assignment.
  • Apply for a G visa if you’re an employee of an international organization entering the U.S. for a work assignment.
  • Apply for a non-immigrant visa if you’re a NATO employee being assigned to work in the U.S.

Step 2 Select an E visa if you’re a treaty trader or investor.

  • Treaty traders must apply for an E-1 visa, while treaty investors must apply for an E-2 visa.

Step 3 Choose a K-1 visa if you’re a fiancé of an American citizen.

  • As a part of the fiancé visa application process, you’ll need to fill out form I-129F. Access more information and the form itself online at: https://www.uscis.gov/i-129f .
  • All fiancé visa interviews must be held in Montreal. So, you’ll need to travel to Montreal for the interview portion of your interview application.

Step 4 Opt for a V-1 visa if you’re married to a permanent American resident.

  • When applying for a V-1 visa, you’ll also need to fill out Forms I-539 and I-693. Find links to the forms, and learn more, at: https://www.uscis.gov/family/family-green-card-holders-permanent-residents/v-visa/v-nonimmigrant-visas .
  • Your children will need to have an application for a V-2 visa filled out in their name(s) as well.

Completing the Online Application

Step 1 Begin the application process online.

  • From this site, you can also continue an existing application that you’ve previously worked on and saved.

Step 2 Fill out the Online Visa Application form DS-160.

  • You can access the DS-160 application form online at: https://ceac.state.gov/genniv/ .
  • To see a sample DS-160 form before beginning your online application, visit: https://travel.state.gov/content/dam/visas/PDF-other/DS-160_Example.pdf .
  • As part of the DS-160 online filing process, you’ll also select the consulate at which you’d like to have your interview.

Step 3 Upload a photograph of yourself with the application.

  • If you don’t have a current digital photo, you can take one using a smartphone, then upload it to the computer on which you’re filling out your visa application. Or, visit a professional photography agency.

Step 4 Make the required online payment when submitting the visa application.

  • The fee is for $160 USD.

Step 5 Appear for an in-person interview at a U.S.

  • You can find American Consulate telephone numbers online at: https://www.usembassy.gov/ . Type “Canada” into the search bar, and scroll down to find the Consulate location you’re closest to.
  • If you pass the interview, the consulate staff will issue you your visa.

If you hold a valid US visa and are planning to visit Canada, there are a few important requirements that you need to fulfill. This blog post will guide you through the process and clarify the necessary documents and procedures.

Valid US visa

First and foremost, you need to ensure that your US visa is still valid and not expired. Canadian immigration authorities require a valid US visa to be present in your passport in order to grant you entry into the country. It is important to note that certain types of US visas, such as transit visas, may not be valid for entry into Canada. Make sure you have the necessary visa, such as a tourist or business visa, that allows you to visit Canada.

Passport requirements

Your passport should be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Canada. If your passport is set to expire soon, it is recommended to renew it before your trip. Canadian authorities may deny entry if your passport is due to expire shortly. Additionally, it is essential to have a passport that is machine-readable. This means that it should have a code on the biographical page that can be scanned electronically.

ETA (Electronic Travel Authorization) or Visa

In addition to having a valid US visa, most visitors to Canada also need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or a visa, depending on their country of citizenship. The eTA is a simple online process that grants you permission to travel to Canada by air. It is mandatory for citizens of visa-exempt countries, such as the United States, to obtain an eTA before their trip. The application can be completed online and requires basic personal and travel information. There is a small fee associated with the eTA application.

On the other hand, if you are not a citizen of a visa-exempt country, you will need to apply for a visitor visa. The application process is more extensive and requires supporting documents, such as proof of finances, travel itinerary, and letter of invitation, if applicable. It is crucial to plan ahead and apply for the visitor visa well in advance of your travel dates.

It is important to note that while the eTA or visitor visa is an additional requirement for US visa holders, it does not guarantee entry into Canada. The final decision rests with the Canadian immigration authorities who will assess your admissibility upon your arrival.

In conclusion, if you hold a valid US visa and plan to visit Canada, make sure to meet the requirements of a valid US visa, have a passport that is valid for the entirety of your visit, and obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or visitor visa, depending on your citizenship. By fulfilling these requirements, you can ensure a smooth and hassle-free entry into Canada.

Understanding the eTA program

The Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) program is an online system that allows eligible travelers to visit Canada for tourism, business, or transit purposes. It is a convenient and efficient way to obtain permission to enter Canada, especially for those who do not require a visa.

Eligibility for an eTA

To be eligible for an eTA, you must:

  • Hold a passport from a designated country: The eTA program is available to citizens of specific countries, including those from the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Australia, and many others.
  • Be traveling to Canada by air: The eTA is only required for air travel to Canada. If you are arriving by land or sea, you do not need an eTA.
  • Have a valid reason for travel: The eTA is intended for tourism, business, or transit purposes. If you are planning to study or work in Canada, you will need a different type of visa.
  • Have a clean criminal record: Individuals with a criminal record may not be eligible for an eTA. It is essential to disclose any past criminal offenses during the application process.

Application process for an eTA

To apply for an eTA, follow these steps:

  • Gather the necessary documents: You will need a valid passport, a credit card for payment, and a valid email address to receive notifications about your application.
  • Complete the online application form: Visit the official Government of Canada website and fill out the eTA application form. Provide accurate information and review it carefully before submitting.
  • Pay the application fee: The eTA application fee is typically CAD $7.00. You can pay the fee online using a credit card.
  • Wait for processing: After submitting your application and payment, it will be reviewed by Canadian authorities. Most eTA applications are approved within minutes, but some may require additional processing time.
  • Receive your eTA: If your application is approved, you will receive an email with your eTA number. Make sure to print a copy or save the electronic version, as you will need to present it when you check-in for your flight.

Applying for a Canadian visa

If you are not eligible for an eTA or plan to visit Canada for purposes other than tourism, business, or transit, you may need to apply for a Canadian visa. The visa application process is more extensive and requires additional documents, such as a letter of invitation, proof of financial support, and a detailed travel itinerary.

To apply for a Canadian visa, follow these steps:

  • Determine the type of visa you need: Canada offers a variety of visas for different purposes, including study permits, work permits, and visitor visas. Identify the visa category that matches your reason for travel.
  • Gather the necessary documents: Visit the official Government of Canada website and review the requirements for your specific visa category. Collect all the necessary documents, including passport photos, proof of funds, and a completed application form.
  • Complete the online application form: Fill out the appropriate visa application form online. Provide accurate information and attach all the requested documents.
  • Pay the application fee: The fee for a Canadian visa varies depending on the type of visa and processing time. Payment is typically made online with a credit card.
  • Submit your application: After completing the online form and paying the fee, submit your application. You may be required to provide biometric data (fingerprints and a photograph) at a designated location.
  • Wait for processing: The processing time for Canadian visas can vary significantly. It is advisable to apply well in advance of your intended travel date, as additional processing time may be required.
  • Receive your visa: If your visa application is approved, you will receive a visa sticker in your passport. Make sure to carefully review the details on the visa and follow any additional instructions provided.

Crossing the border from the United States to Canada can be an exciting experience, filled with anticipation for all that Canada has to offer. It is important for US visa holders to familiarize themselves with the entry process, presentation of required documents, and customs and immigration procedures to ensure a smooth transition into Canada. In this article, we will provide a detailed guide to help US visa holders navigate the border crossing seamlessly.

Entry Process at the Border:

Choose a Designated Port of Entry:

Before you arrive at the Canadian border, it's crucial to decide on a designated port of entry. This is the official point where you will cross into Canada. Research and identify the most convenient and well-equipped port of entry based on your travel plans and location.

Prepare for Border Interview:

Upon reaching the border, you will undergo a thorough examination by an immigration officer. This includes a series of questions about your purpose of travel, duration of stay, and any supporting documents you may have. It is crucial to be honest, provide accurate information, and cooperate with the officer during the interview process.

Presentation of Required Documents:

Valid Passport:

Ensure that your passport is valid for the entire duration of your stay in Canada. It should also be the same passport you used during your visa application.

Valid US Visa:

US visa holders are required to present their valid US visa at the Canadian border. This visa should be appropriate for the purpose of your visit to Canada.

ETA or Visa Exemption:

Depending on your nationality, you may need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) or may be exempt from it. It is essential to check whether your country qualifies for eTA or if you are exempt from it. If applicable, obtain an approved eTA before your departure.

Supporting Documents:

Prepare any supporting documents that may help establish the purpose of your visit, such as an invitation letter, employment letter, or proof of accommodation. These documents can help demonstrate that you have sufficient ties to your home country and intend to return after your visit.

Customs and Immigration Procedures:

Declare Goods:

Ensure that you declare all goods you are carrying with you when you enter Canada. This is to avoid any penalties or consequences if you are found to be carrying prohibited or restricted items. Familiarize yourself with the duty-free limits and restrictions on certain items to ensure compliance.

Prepare for Customs Check:

You may be required to go through a customs inspection, where an officer will inspect your belongings and verify the information you provided. Be prepared to present any receipts, invoices, or ownership documents for expensive items, especially if you plan to bring them back to the US.

Understand Quarantine and Health Requirements:

During times of health emergencies or pandemics, additional health and quarantine requirements may be in place. Stay up to date with the latest regulations and ensure compliance with any COVID-19 related protocols.

Crossing the border into Canada as a US visa holder can be a smooth and efficient process if you familiarize yourself with the entry process, required documents, and customs and immigration procedures. Be prepared, organized, and cooperative during the border interview, present the necessary documents, and comply with customs and immigration regulations. By following these guidelines, you can ensure a hassle-free entry into Canada and a memorable visit to our beautiful northern neighbor.

Exploring Bulgaria: Can You Enter with a Schengen Visa?

If you are a US visa holder planning to travel to Canada, it is important to be aware of the restrictions and limitations that may apply to you. Canada has specific rules and regulations in place for visitors with US visas, and understanding them will help ensure a smooth and hassle-free trip. In this article, we will explore the temporary travel restrictions, the duration of stay, employment restrictions, and traveling to other countries from Canada as a US visa holder.

Temporary travel restrictions

As a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, both Canada and the United States have implemented temporary travel restrictions that may affect your travel plans. Before planning your trip, it is crucial to stay up-to-date with the latest information and guidelines issued by the Canadian and US governments.

Currently, only essential travel is permitted between the US and Canada. This means that tourism and recreational trips are not allowed, and travelers must have a valid reason for their visit, such as work, study, or family reunification. It is essential to have the appropriate documentation to support the purpose of your trip when crossing the border.

Duration of stay in Canada

The duration of stay for US visa holders in Canada depends on the visa category they hold. Generally, visitors from the United States are allowed to stay in Canada for up to six months. However, the immigration officer at the point of entry ultimately decides the length of your stay, and it may be shorter or longer depending on the circumstances.

It is essential to have a valid passport and US visa, along with supporting documents such as an invitation letter from a Canadian host, proof of accommodation, and a return ticket to the US, to ensure a smooth entry into Canada. Overstaying your authorized period of stay can have serious consequences, including being barred from re-entry into Canada in the future.

Employment restrictions

US visa holders traveling to Canada should be aware of the employment restrictions that may apply. In most cases, visitors to Canada are not allowed to work without the appropriate work permit. However, certain exceptions exist, such as business visitors who engage in international business activities without directly entering the Canadian labor market.

If you are a US visa holder planning to work in Canada, it is important to obtain the necessary work permit before starting your employment. Failure to do so can result in serious legal consequences, including deportation and being barred from entering Canada in the future. Before planning any work-related activities in Canada, consult with an immigration lawyer or the nearest Canadian embassy or consulate for guidance.

Traveling to other countries from Canada as a US visa holder

If you are a US visa holder visiting Canada and wish to travel to another country, you may need to apply for a visa or an electronic travel authorization (ETA) depending on your destination. Some countries have reciprocal visa agreements with the United States, allowing US visa holders to enter without an additional visa. However, it is always recommended to check the entry requirements for your specific destination country before traveling.

When leaving Canada, ensure that you have the necessary travel documents, such as a valid passport, visa, or ETA for your next destination. It is also essential to check the re-entry requirements to the United States if you plan to return there after your trip.

In conclusion, if you are a US visa holder planning to travel to Canada, it is crucial to be aware of the temporary travel restrictions, the duration of stay, employment restrictions, and requirements for traveling to other countries. Staying informed and ensuring you have the necessary documentation will help make your trip to Canada a smooth and enjoyable experience.

The CBSA and U.S. CBP provide an update on the NEXUS program

From: Canada Border Services Agency

News release

April 2, 2024

Ottawa, Ontario

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) NEXUS program speeds up border crossings for frequent travellers from Canada and the United States. Since 2002, the bilateral trusted traveller program has supported communities and economic interests on both sides of the border by expediting the crossing of pre-screened travellers and allowing border officers to focus more attention on stopping illegal activities and criminals.

Work is underway to increase the NEXUS application fee from US$50 to US$120 effective October 1, 2024, subject to approval of regulatory amendments in the United States and Canada.

The current fee, set over 20 years ago, no longer covers the cost of the program. The new fee would reflect more accurately the cost of administrating the program and the investment required for future program improvements, including technology and infrastructure enhancements. This would work out to US$24 per year for the 5-year membership.

The proposed increase would help keep up with the high demand for the program and continue to improve NEXUS. Since April 2023, we have received over 510,000 applications and completed almost 10,000 interviews every 2 weeks.

Applicants are encouraged to book their interview as soon as possible. Appointments are always available on the Trusted Traveller Programs System . Many enrolment centres offer next-day availability for scheduling interviews, allowing applicants to book their appointments quickly.

In anticipation of an increase in demand between now and October, the CBSA and U.S. CBP remain ready to process applications and will continue to make interviews available.

Over the past year, the CBSA and U.S. CBP have:

  • Reduced the inventory of NEXUS interviews by 25% since July 2022.
  • Expanded hours of service at enrolment centres in both Canada and the U.S. to increase the availability of interview appointments.
  • Introduced split interviews at land enrolment centres, offering additional interview options for applicants.
  • Reopened Canadian airport enrolment centres for two-step interviews.
  • Provided flexibility for applicants to complete the interview process, while encouraging them to complete their interviews as soon as possible.

Quick facts

Applicants who have submitted their application and paid the US$50 fee, but have not completed their enrolment interviews by October 1, 2024, will not have to pay the proposed US$120 fee.

The proposed fee aligns with the fee harmonization across other Trusted Traveller Programs administered by U.S. CBP .

The NEXUS program currently has over 1.8 million members, with the majority of members being Canadian.

NEXUS cards allow members to:

  • use self-serve NEXUS kiosks or eGates when entering Canada at nine major international airports
  • use dedicated vehicle lanes at 20 designated land border crossings
  • use U.S. Global Entry kiosks for entry into the U.S.
  • receive expedited clearance through CATSA security screening lines at major and select mid-sized airports in Canada
  • receive expedited clearance through the U.S. Transportation Security Administration Pre-Check lines at over 200 participating U.S. airports
  • clear the border by boat using the Telephone Reporting Centre and pre-register your arrival at 426 designated sites

How to Retire in Canada

I f you’re interested in heading north of the border for retirement, it’s important to think about life there and consider your goals and budget. Canada is a popular destination for those looking for a new start. It aims to welcome 485,000 individuals as permanent residents in 2024, and 500,000 in 2025.

If you want to retire in Canada , here’s how:

  • Know your options for a tourist visa.
  • Research other visa options.
  • Understand permanent residency in Canada.
  • Manage your taxes.
  • Prepare your household.
  • Learn about health care costs.

Know Your Options for a Tourist Visa

When you enter Canada, you could receive a visitor visa that is valid for six months from the day you enter. If you’d like to stay longer, you can fill out some paperwork to obtain permission to extend your stay. As a tourist, you can purchase a vacation home and set up a bank account in Canada. “I’ve done this myself and never had any problems at the bank or at the border,” says Cori Carl, author of “Moving to Canada.”

This might be a viable option for those planning to split their retirement between two or more locations. If you spend six months of the year in the warmer locales of the Southern U.S. , you could live in Canada for the remaining time. You’ll be considered a U.S. citizen and will need to pay U.S. taxes with this setup. You won’t have access to Canadian health care coverage and won’t be subject to Canadian taxes.

Research Other Visa Options

If you have children or grandchildren in Canada, you can apply for the parent and grandparent super visa. This type of visa would allow you live in Canada for up to two years at a time for a total of 10 years. However, it doesn’t provide access to provincial health coverage or other benefits of residency. To qualify for the super visa, your child or grandchild must be a citizen or permanent resident of Canada and must write a letter promising to financially support you for the duration of your visit.

Understand Permanent Residency in Canada

For those planning to stay in Canada for more than six months each year or who are not eligible for a family super visa, it may be possible to apply for permanent residency. As a permanent resident of Canada, you’ll have access to government-based programs such as health care. Permanent residency can also lead to Canadian citizenship.

Canada does not have a retirement visa . Paths to permanent residency include an immigration process called Express Entry set up for those who have certain skills or want to operate businesses in Canada. Some Canadian provinces have immigration options that are based on graduation from Canadian universities or open to people in specific professions. If you’re planning to have a second career in retirement and are looking at working for several years, these might be viable immigration options.

Manage Your Taxes

Moving to Canada doesn’t mean you need to give up your U.S. citizenship. You can receive Social Security benefits while living in another country, but you will also likely still be subject to U.S. taxes if you earn supplemental income. This is because the United States has citizen-based taxation. “Retirees in Canada may still owe U.S. taxes on their U.S. retirement income along with any other Canadian earned income,” says Nathalie Goldstein, CEO of MyExpatTaxes, a tax software company.

In addition, you might need to declare your worldwide income to the Canada Revenue Agency, Canada’s version of the IRS. “At first glance, it may seem like U.S. retirees will be double-taxed by both the U.S. and Canada,” Goldstein says. “However, that is not the case if they are able to optimize their tax return using the benefits defined in the U.S. and Canadian tax treaty and other expat tax reliefs such as the foreign earned income exclusion and foreign tax credit benefits.”

Prepare Your Household

Everyday expenses might be lower or higher in Canada, depending on the area you live and lifestyle you choose. You’ll want to research cities and travel to them to determine if they’ll be a good fit.

Bringing pets could involve several steps. “Dogs and cats will require proof of rabies vaccination,” says Ajay Singh, a former lawyer and managing director of RetireBetter. They will typically undergo an inspection at customs, and you may need to show additional documentation.

Large belongings like vehicles will have several requirements. “You’ll need to pay duty on any value that exceeds CAD $10,000,” Singh says. You’ll also want to make sure your auto is eligible for Canada. “If you’re considering a permanent move, you’ll need to get your car registered locally, obtain Canadian plates and secure a valid Canadian car insurance policy,” Singh says.

Learn About Health Care Costs

If you only spend several months of the year in Canada and don’t become a permanent resident, you may need to purchase international health insurance. “Unless you obtain permanent residency or citizenship, you won’t have access to free health care,” Singh says.

You generally cannot use Medicare for health care services in another country.

Set up a plan before making a temporary or long-term move. Assess your budget to see if it’s financially feasible to live in Canada. Speaking with others who have retired there could help you decide what's best for your next stage.

No question about it: Argentina has become expensive in US dollars

Brazil: Travelers from US, Australia, and Canada will need a visa starting next week

The requirement has been reinstated out of reciprocity since Brazilians need to go through the same process to enter those countries

Holders of US, Australian, and Canadian passports will be required a tourist visa to enter Brazil by air, land, or sea, effective next Wednesday (April 10), Agencia Brasil reported. Under Decree 11.875/2024, the initial Jan. 10 deadline was extended for three months to avoid the negative consequences for Brazil's tourism industry during peak season.

The visa requirement overturns a decision by former President Jair Bolsonaro, who had lifted such an imposition in March 2019 for travelers from the United States, Canada, Australia, and Japan in a unilateral decision while Brazilians continued to need a visa to travel to those countries. Hence, Itamaraty explained that the new measure stemmed from a question of reciprocity.

In May 2023, Japan was removed from this list when Brazil and the island nation signed an agreement to waive visa requirements for nationals of either country entering the other for tourism purposes for up to 90 days.

Brazil's International Tourism Promotion Agency (Embratur) has undertaken a campaign through tour operators and airlines in the three countries affected to remind their customers of the need for visas.

Travelers from those countries wishing to visit Brazil must apply for an electronic visa, the so-called e-Visa, through the platform: https://brazil.vfsevisa.com, which costs US$ 80.90, Agencia Brasil also pointed out.

The 100% electronic procedure does not require applicants to show up at a Brazilian consulate. All the necessary documentation can be uploaded digitally and the visa is also delivered via e-mail. A print-up will be needed together with a valid passport to be admitted into Brazil.

Travelers are also advised to apply for the e-visa well in advance to avoid delays or missed connections.

The e-visa will allow multiple entries and will have the same validity period as conventional visas: ten years for US nationals and five years for Canadians and Australians.
