Jilted customers of Vantage Travel , the luxury cruise line that went bankrupt in June and canceled trips worth thousands of dollars, will receive 100% reimbursement to put toward future travel thanks to new buyer Pacific Travel.

According to details of an agreement outlined in federal bankruptcy court Wednesday, customers will have until Nov. 30, 2028, to book travel with the new company, and caps will be imposed for how much value can be applied to individual services.

Oceangoing travel credits will be capped at 50% of the trip's cost, while credits toward river cruises and land travel, like safaris, will be capped at 20%. Credits can be applied toward either a deposit or later payment but cannot be used toward airfare, according to the agreement.

New owner reveals plans for bankrupt Boston cruise company Vantage Travel

The new owner of a bankrupt Boston cruise company said he hopes to rebuild customers’ faith and trust in the brand with a relaunch in 2024.

Aurora Expeditions Chairman Neville Buch said Vantage Deluxe World Travel will be renamed Vantage Explorations and will offer “Vantage style” trips in the new year.

“We are fully committed to restoring value to Vantage customer creditors and at the same time delivering exceptional travel experiences. Unfortunately the speed of the process and the uncertainty of outcome until only a few weeks ago has meant that everything is ‘work in process,’” Buch said in an email to Boston 25.

The Australian-based Aurora took over Vantage’s assets this month after making a $2 million bid in U.S. Bankruptcy Court. Vantage filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June after coming under fire for months . Hundreds complained about a lack of refunds for canceled or postponed trips and its estimated Vantage owes $108 million to its customers.

Under the terms of the acquisition, Aurora is offering 100 percent future travel credits to Vantage customers owed money. If a customer decides to try an ocean cruise with the new company, they may use 50 percent of their travel credits at a time based on a cruise’s list price and based on “availability.” If a former Vantage customer wants to take a river or land trip, they can use 20 percent of their travel credits per trip.

The travel credits are valid through Nov. 2028 and Vantage customers may share their credits with friends and family.

“We plan on beginning communication with customer creditors in the next two weeks and hope that they will consider our offering in the spirit that it is intended,” Buch said. “For Oceangoing product we have our fleet of Infinity class ships and will expand the offering to include more Vantage style trips which we can offer right away. For river and land we are in discussion with various operators looking for the right partner which we hope to complete in the next few months.”

An Aurora spokesperson said the company is developing itineraries in the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Middle East and British Isles.

“The credits are good for five years so you have plenty of time to wait and see. That would be my recommendation,” said Consumer Rescue founder Michelle Couch-Friedman. Couch-Friedman has reported extensively on Vantage’s financial issues and has been in touch with hundreds of Vantage customers. She recently wrote a consumer guide for Vantage customers and posted a Q&A with Buch .

“If you decide you’re done traveling and you don’t want the credits, the customer should still take the credits because you can give them away. You can give them to friends and family,” Couch-Friedman. “There’s no benefit to any Vantage customer to reject the credits.”

Karrie Szatek in Fairhaven said she’s not planning to use her travel credits. She said Vantage owed her around $30,000 for two overseas trips that never happened and she’s hesitant to book another trip with the new company.

“At this point, no. I want to wait and see,” she said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.

Vantage Travel Signs Deal to Sell to United Travel, Heritage Expeditions

  • June 29, 2023

Ocean Explorer

Vantage Travel Services today announced that United Travel Pte. Ltd., an affiliate of Nordic Hamburg and Heritage Expeditions, has agreed to acquire Vantage’s assets and provide customers with future opportunities for the travel experiences and the luxury service that they have come to expect, according to a press release.

Vantage, which operated two ships year-round in the adventure cruise market, ceased operating earlier this year and was said to be working to sell the company.

New Zealand-based Heritage Expeditions operates the Heritage Adventurer (former Hanseatic) year-round in the expedition cruise market; Nordic Hamburg is said to provide vessel management services to the ship.

According to a statement, the proposed acquisition is being facilitated by a Chapter 11 filing today in the United States Bankruptcy Court for the District of Massachusetts by Vantage. Vantage has sought customary relief from the court to preserve the status quo pending completion of the sale, the company said, in a statement.

Vantage said it has sought approval to complete the sale promptly, subject to any higher and better offers that may be submitted through the court supervised sale process.

Victims of the Vantage Travel bankruptcy have credits to spend on Aurora Expeditions. This is an Aurora ship with an X. Confused claimants are rejecting their credits.

What Vantage Travel customers need to know before rejecting their credits

January 21, 2024

Confusion remains high for the former customers of the bankrupt tour operator Vantage Deluxe World Travel. The legalese in each notification from the bankruptcy court invariably brings a new wave of bewilderment for those unsecured creditors.

That confusion has now reached a fever pitch. In the past month, hundreds of Vantage Travel customers have formally “opted out” of the only sure thing they’ll receive from the bankruptcy: future travel credits provided by Aurora Expeditions.

This sudden influx of requests to reject those travel credits is rooted in a general misunderstanding of what opting out actually means in this situation.

Throughout the past year, my team at Consumer Rescue has been on a mission to provide factual information and support to the victims of Vantage Travel’s bankruptcy.

We’ve fielded thousands of questions, attended nearly every bankruptcy hearing, reviewed hundreds of documents, investigated odd challenges to valid credit card disputes , and directly facilitated the return of hundreds of thousands of dollars to former customers of Vantage Deluxe World Travel.

As a result, I can say it’s absolutely ill-advised for former customers to give up their travel credits right now. There is no benefit to anyone to reject what was awarded to them via the bankruptcy proceedings thus far.

Let me explain.

What did Vantage Travel customers get out of the bankruptcy?

To understand what’s going on today, you have to understand what’s already happened. For those unfamiliar with the Vantage Travel bankruptcy, here is a quick recap.

When Vantage Travel went bankrupt , it owed nearly 10,000 customers refunds and/or travel protection payments . The grand total owed? A stunning $108 million. That’s money that, in all likelihood, is gone and will never be recovered.

However, there was a small light at the end of the bankruptcy tunnel for Vantage Travel customers.

In August, Pacific Travel Partners won the bid in bankruptcy court to purchase the remnants of Vantage Travel.

Of particular value to Aurora Expeditions, the parent company of the newly formed Pacific Travel, was Vantage’s customer list. As per the sale agreement, Vantage Travel customers will receive future travel credits equal to the value of the refund owed to them at the time of the bankruptcy.

Those future travel credits can be used, with limitations as outlined in the sale agreement approved by the bankruptcy court.

Pacific Travel Partners bought the remnants of Vantage Deluxe World Travel in bankruptcy court

Vantage Travel ship called Ocean Explorer.

You can read the specific details of Pacific Travel’s purchase of the remnants of Vantage Travel in my report . But here’s the abbreviated summary:

  • The travel credits, issued by Aurora Expeditions, are equal to 100 percent of what Vantage Travel owed to each customer.
  • The expiration date on the travel credits is Nov. 30, 2028.
  • The credits can be used to pay for up to 50 percent of the cost of a non-discounted ocean cruise with Aurora Expeditions or with Pacific Travel (which is operating as Vantage Explorations ).
  • Although there are no river cruises available today, these are planned for the future. Credits can be used to pay for up to 20 percent of the cost of these trips.
  • At this time, Vantage Explorations has added some new “trekking” adventures to the line up. Vantage Travel customers can use their credits to pay for up to 20 percent of the cost of these tours.
  • Customers can continue to redeem their credits as per the agreement until the credits are exhausted or expired.
  • These credits are transferable. That is to say, they can be given away to friends and family, but they can’t be sold.
  • Under no circumstances will these credits be converted to a cash refund.

Vantage Travel customers hoped for a refund

As far as bankruptcy outcomes go for consumers, this one is considered better than most. In fact, the original bidder for the customer list of Vantage Travel intended only to provide former customers a one time opportunity to pay for up to 20 percent of a future journey with credits. As I discussed with Jason Law at Boston 25 last August , the final sale agreement is a decidedly better deal than was first expected for Vantage customers.

But, of course, every Vantage customer was hoping to receive a full cash refund or a replacement trip at no additional cost.

Logically, that would be fair. Unfortunately, that isn’t how bankruptcy works.

Vantage Deluxe World Travel no longer exists and there isn’t any money to provide refunds to customers.

It has been very hard for Vantage Travel customers to come to terms with the harsh reality of the situation. The bankrupt tour operator owes secured and unsecured creditors (customers) nearly $170 million. There is no money to pay that tab. If there was, Vantage wouldn’t have gone out of business in the first place.

Further, Aurora Expeditions is not affiliated with Vantage Travel and did not agree to take on its $170 million debt.

But despite this fact, on nearly a daily basis, I receive requests from Vantage Travel customers asking how they can choose a refund instead of credits.

The blunt answer is: You can’t.

It seemed we were making progress getting that message across to the former customers… until last month.

That’s when a new wrinkle was added to this consumer catastrophe and reignited the flame of confusion.

Will a Consumer Deposit Claim lead to a refund for Vantage Travel customers?

At the end of December, Vantage Travel claimants received a notice from the Bankruptcy Court. It informed them of the Court’s approval of the company’s liquidation plan.  That notice also provided customers with an address where they could inform the Creditor Trustee that they had decided to waive the travel credit and take a distribution under the plan.

To Former Customers of the Debtor: The debtor has previously notified you of your eligibility to utilize the Travel Credit provided by Pacific Travel Partners, Inc (“Pacific”). The Plan provides that customers who accept the Travel Credit will waive any distribution under the Plan and the Creditor Trust (as defined in the Plan), and the amount of your claim will be reduced by the amount of the Travel Credit that has been used or remains subject to your use. Information on the distributions under the Plan and the Creditor Trust was set forth in the Disclosure Statement previously sent to you. A copy of the Disclosure Statement is also on the Stretto website maintained for the Debtor’s Chapter 11 case. U.S. Bankruptcy Court to former customers of Vantage Deluxe World Travel

This wording led many recipients to erroneously assume they were now in line for a cash “distribution.” That is as long as they waived their rights to their travel credits.

So that’s exactly what hundreds of former Vantage Travel customers immediately did in their confusion.

What does this notice really mean?

As a consumer advocate and reporter, I’ve followed the unraveling of Vantage Travel for years –and reported on the situation to many media outlets . I’m not unfamiliar with legal jargon and I thought I had a firm grasp of all the details of the bankruptcy proceedings. But this blurb confused even me. When I started receiving excited emails from Vantage customers who hoped I could interpret it, I couldn’t.

So I went to the Debtor’s attorney, Michael Goldberg and the Trustee of the bankruptcy estate, Stephen Gray, for clarification.

What follows is a summary (in layman’s terms) of my interview via Zoom with Mr. Goldberg and Mr. Gray. We discussed the details of the priority claims and what opting out really means to Vantage Travel customers.

Note: For the sake of clarity: The legal counsel of both the Debtor and the Trustee have reviewed and fact-checked the next sections.

Who qualifies for a priority claim in this bankruptcy?

At the end of last year, Judge Bostwick approved an order that would possibly provide some limited refunds to Vantage Travel customers who had filed “Priority Claims.” But there are multiple stipulations and limitations to this “Consumer Deposit Claim” order. Here are the bullet point takeaways:

  • To be eligible, a Vantage customer must have already filed a 410 Notice of Claim with the bankruptcy court, expressly claiming priority treatment.
  • Legally, the cap on a priority claim is $3,350. But in the vast majority of cases the deposit amount required by Vantage was only $500 or $1,000 per customer. The only dollar figure the Court will consider as a priority claim in this bankruptcy case, is the initial deposit.
  • Customers who paid for their travel arrangements in full do not qualify for a priority claim.
  • The only situation in which Vantage customers are entitled to a priority claim is where they made only an initial deposit, but did not prepay for the trip in full. For example, if a customer’s trip cost $40,000 and they made an initial deposit of $500 and then subsequently paid the remaining balance of $39,500, they would have no priority claim for any amount.
  •  All Vantage Travel customers who timely filed a priority claim have until June 30, 2025 to determine whether they should opt out or keep their credits.
  •  It is highly unlikely that there will be  any cash distribution on claims before the third quarter of 2025.

Where will the money come from to pay priority claims?

Oh, one last critical part of the above equation: There is currently no money to distribute. The only way any priority claims will be processed is if Mr. Gray, the trustee, can recover money to do so.

Some of those funds will come from Vantage’s remaining assets – for example, funds currently being held in reserve by the company’s credit card processors and bank, or insurance claims.  Some recoveries may depend on Mr. Gray bringing litigation, which has an uncertain outcome. But the bottom line is that the recovery process will need more time before payments to customers can be determined.

How a Vantage Travel customer can check if they qualify for a Priority Claim

If you’re unsure if you filed a priority claim or if you qualify, here’s how to quickly find out:

  • Did you pay off your trip in full? If you did, then you don’t qualify and you don’t need to go to the next step.
  • Go to the Vantage Travel claims page in Stretto .
  • In the search field, type in your last name and find your 410 Form.
  • Click on the plus sign and see if there is a dollar amount in the priority claim field. If there isn’t then you don’t qualify for priority claim status.

The vast majority of the hundreds of Vantage customers who opted out of thousands and thousands of dollars in travel credits in the past several weeks do not qualify for a priority claim. Which leads me to believe that most of those people opted-out because they didn’t understand the notice.

The reality is that the number of Vantage customers who qualify as a priority claimant is miniscule. In fact, I recently randomly checked over 100 claims in Stretto and not even one person qualified.

What is the real value of the travel credits?

There is another segment of Vantage Travel customers who are opting out because they misunderstand the value of their credits. Too many times to count, I’ve found posts in our private Facebook group , received emails or phone calls from customers with sizable credits who tell me they’re “worthless.”

This almost always stems from the customer’s misunderstanding as to how they can spend their credits. This confusion leads to a poorly constructed math equation.

To determine whether you want to keep or reject your travel credits, it is crucial to “do the math,” correctly .

A frequent misunderstanding among Vantage customers is that they can only spend 50 percent of their credits on each trip. If that were true, it would make it quite difficult to get any real value out of these credits.

But that isn’t the case.

Pay for up to half your cruise with travel credits

Vantage Travel customers can use credits to pay for up to 50 percent of the cost of an ocean cruise with Aurora Expeditions or Vantage Explorations. That means if they’ve got $10,000 in credits, they can spend it all on one trip as long as the base cost is more than $20,000.

Of course, if you’ve got a very low value travel credit, you may not find any real benefit to spending it with the new company.

The other frequent complaint I receive is that Aurora Expeditions only takes passengers to cold weather climates.

While that is historically true, the cruise line is currently expanding their geographical coverage. The company is adding destinations to their schedules via Vantage Explorations with more itineraries on the way. You can review all the newest cruises which expand into warm weather climates in Europe and Latin America on the Vantage Explorations website.

Vantage Explorations is a brand new company, just launching. And the good news is that those credits are good for 5 years. That will give Vantage Explorations plenty of time to develop into a tour operator more closely aligned with the former company in terms of trips.

And don’t forget, you can give those travel credits away as gifts as well.

The bottom line for Vantage Travel bankruptcy victims

No Vantage Travel customer should feel compelled to make a decision about opting out at this time.

There is no rush and there is zero benefit to rejecting those credits (or using them) in 2024. No one is getting an express ticket to the head of some mythical Vantage Travel refund line by opting out. And, by waiting until the June 30, 2025 deadline for opting out, Vantage customers can see how the Aurora Expeditions /Vantage Explorations trip schedules develop in the coming months.

Every Vantage Travel customer has until June 30, 2025 to take a breath, let things settle, thoroughly read through all the documents and articles, ask questions and then make a decision about those credits. Formally opting out is legally binding and is a decision that shouldn’t be made hastily, because it can’t be changed later.

If you’re a Vantage Travel customer who believes you made a mistake opting out in the past several weeks, you can contact me or Mr. Gray, the trustee, for a limited time to reset your decision.

Mr. Gray intends to reach out to all of the Vantage customers who opted out directly, to assist anyone who does want to change their opt-out decision.  He has emphasized to me his desire to make sure that the Vantage customers get the most from their claims under the current circumstances of the bankruptcy case.( Michelle Couch-Friedman , Consumer Rescue)

There is a new twist in the travel nightmare involving a Boston-based luxury cruise company.

Last week, Vantage Travel filed for bankruptcy amid a sea of canceled trips and customer complaints.

At a hearing on Wednesday, a new possible buyer emerged for Vantage.

"It was a surprise. I didn't know," said Vantage customer Rob Hert, who drove from Long Island to attend the hearing in Boston. Hert said he's been frustrated by the lack of information from Vantage and their attorneys. He also said this is the first time he's heard there could be another buyer.

"I'm curious about a couple things," Hert said. "How many other bidders are out there? They're trying to rush this through."

In court, an attorney for the Australian company Aurora Expeditions told the judge it could wire money for a new deal "tomorrow" if Vantage's current agreement with United Travel falls apart.

One of Vantage's most valuable assets appears to be its database of more than 3.6 million customers.

But Hert said he and other customers are unhappy, especially now that Vantage has acknowledged it owes about $80 million for canceled trips. Hert currently manages a Facebook group to collect their complaints.

"The truth is it has devastated people's lives financially, emotionally," he said. "People that had planned and saved for these trips of a lifetime that had been erased. So people are so, so angry."

Right now, the deal on the table with United Travel would only offer credits to customers that could be worth up to 20% toward the cost of booking a future trip. But they'd have to spend more money to get any value from that.

Video below: Luxury cruise line's customers could lose big in bankruptcy plan

Vantage's attorney told the judge the deal needs to be completed quickly, calling the situation a "melting ice cube" since Vantage has no revenue coming in and only enough loans to keep operating for 45 days.

"Vantage put Vantage in this situation," Hert said. "If Vantage had communicated to customers and were upfront, we wouldn't be in this situation."

The court told the Vantage customers who attended Wednesday's hearing that they'll have to wait until later in the month to share their complaints.

Vantage also faces a class-action lawsuit claiming the company "stonewalled and misled" customers who tried to get refunds for canceled trips costing as much as $34,000.

The Massachusetts Attorney General's Office tells NewsCenter 5 they are still actively seeking refunds for customers. They've secured more than $1.23 million to date.

We asked for a comment on the bankruptcy hearing and the potential new buyer and have not received a response.

New owner reveals plans for bankrupt Boston cruise company Vantage Travel

BOSTON — The new owner of a bankrupt Boston cruise company said he hopes to rebuild customers’ faith and trust in the brand with a relaunch in 2024.

Would-be travelers out thousands of dollars after last-minute cancellations. What to do

A dream cruise cancelled at the last minute. problems getting a refund of the thousands they paid. it happens. what can consumers do to avoid a frustrating and costly situation.

Settled in the Delta Sky Lounge at Tampa International Airport in late March, Lynne Schrum and her husband, David Hall, were ready to head out on their two-and-a-half-week vacation to Western Europe.

This wasn’t the original trip the couple had booked as first-time customers of Boston-based cruise company Vantage Deluxe World Travel. In January 2021, the St. Petersburg couple had reserved an Aegean Sea cruise that was set to sail 15 months later. But that cruise was subsequently postponed to October 2022, which did not work for them.

Vantage instead gave the couple the option to go on their “tulips” cruise, which would take them to Brussels for a few days before an eight-day cruise in the Netherlands, with an excursion to Paris to round out their time abroad.

“We’re sitting there, congratulating ourselves, getting excited,” Schrum said. “Then the phone rang.”

It was a representative from Vantage, warning them not to get on the plane and to collect their baggage. Their trip had been canceled.

Your home or car is flooded: Here's what to do now.

High electricity bill? I tried to lower mine with these energy efficient habits

“My husband is sitting there, watching my face. He was pretty sure someone in our family had died,” she said.

She tried to reason with the man on the other line. She thought about all the things they had booked, the tickets they had to the opera and a trip to Giverny to see Monet’s gardens, and figured they could still go, even if they wouldn’t be going on the cruise. But five minutes later, she said, their seats on the plane were canceled.

“At first, we were just shocked. Now we’re angry,” said Schrum, who had paid $33,000 for the trip. “It’s all of the people who are so distressed about it.”

Schrum said she was told a refund would take 14 business days. Now it’s been more than 40.

“They’ve had this money for a very, very, very long time. We’re retired. We are not young,” said Schrum, who is 76. “It’s inconceivable that this amount of money would be gone from our savings.”

The couple's plight is due to issues with Vantage, but everyday travelers and vacationers run into problems with vacation bookings for any number of reasons.

In the weeks following the couple’s cancelled cruise, Vantage faced a ransomware attack that left customers without a way to contact the company for at least a week. It had also canceled at least five other cruises.

So what can consumers do to avoid a frustrating and costly situation with a trip? What should they do if they find themselves in a similar position? The Palm Beach Post asked travel experts for their advice.

Pay with a credit card when you make that initial travel booking

Vantage Travel offered customers discounts for paying with an eCheck or directly through their checking account. Both couples who spoke with The Post had paid by check. But travel experts say there’s no level of protection by doing this, and consumers should instead book travel with a credit card.

“The credit card company is going to give you protection against financial insolvency,” said Dan Meister, who owns Boca-Raton based Top Group Travel.

At least when paying via credit card, you can try to dispute a charge if you paid for a service that did not come to fruition and attempts to get a reimbursement directly from the company have been exhausted.

“As soon as they cancel, they’re good at getting the money back,” said Laurence Gore, a Fort Lauderdale attorney who specializes in travel and tourism law.

Research a company before you agree to be their customer

Before putting down that credit card, though, do your research.

“If you’re thinking of booking through a tour company, see the cancellations or comments,” Gore said. But be wary of the timing of those complaints. “If you find problems during the pandemic, that doesn’t necessarily mean the company has a problem now.”

Look up reviews on search engines and social media or through the Better Business Bureau.

You can also consider booking with travel companies that have certain certifications or proven financial stability, such as members of the U.S. Tour Operators Associations who put up $1 million in collateral in the event something happens, or suppliers listed with Trusted FIT Services, said Jeffrey Ment, a travel industry lawyer from Hartford, Conn. These companies can give travelers some extra peace of mind.

Consider a travel agency. It may be old school, but they can vet travel companies for you.

With Airbnb and direct-to-consumer companies like Vantage being the more popular way to travel, consumers these days tend to handle their own travel plans. But licensed, bonded and insured travel agencies, albeit old school, can offer customers options with vetted companies or tell you if a company has caused issues in the past. Additionally, agents can provide support to customers if a cancellation occurs.

“We can elevate (an issue) within our network where they have more leverage with these suppliers,” said Kurt Crowl, president of Travel Leaders of the Palm Beaches. “If you don’t book with a travel agent, you don’t have that leverage.”

Added consultant Phyllis Horodner: “Without a travel agent, you’re on your own.”

Keep good records of travel plans and communications with companies you are working with

You should always keep a paper trail of your travel plans. That means making sure you have a record of expenditures and receipts, tickets and correspondence with the company. On the company’s end, customer service calls are typically recorded and kept on file. It’s not a bad idea after such a phone call to write down what was discussed and email it to the company to confirm as another form of records.

Get travel insurance (but read the terms and conditions closely)

Getting travel insurance can help in the event you get sick or have an accident, but depending on the policy, it could also help if the company files for bankruptcy or is otherwise “not able to meet their obligations,” Meister said. The travel company will offer their own insurance, but it’s possible to get insurance through a travel agent or other provider. Meister said it’s better to get a policy around the time of your first deposit for the trip, but it can also be purchased right up until the start of the trip.

It’s important to read the fine print, both of the travel insurance as well as the company’s refund and cancellation policies.

Think carefully about your options once a problem has surfaced

Experts suggest sending letters to the attorneys general of your home state and that where the company operates, submitting comments to the Better Business Bureau and filing a complaint with the Federal Maritime Commission.

If all else fails, you might want to consider the legal route and hire an attorney who knows travel law, such as one with the International Forum of Tourism and Travel Advocates, experts said. Even if you win in small claims court, because of the limitations you may not get back all your money.

Unclear how many people's travel plans disrupted by Vantage, but the company cited reasons for canceling trips

It's unclear precisely how many people were impacted by these cancellations. The Post sent inquiries to one of the company's executive vice presidents as well as the former outside communications firm, but did not receive a response at the time of publication. A month-old Facebook group dedicated to those who had been spurned has almost 300 members. Nevertheless, some Vantage customers are waiting on reimbursements in the tens of thousands of dollars.

The reasons trips were thwarted are varied, as Vantage's founder and chairman Henry Lewis wrote in two letters to consumers published to the website. On April 28, Lewis said four trips to the Netherlands had been canceled “due to the ship’s readiness,” and two trips to Egypt were canceled over safety concerns.

“With the recent U.S. State Department Sudan travel advisory, given the proximity, we are closely monitoring our trips to Egypt until further notice for the safety of our guests,” the letter from Lewis reads.

Furthermore, the message says that a ransomware attack discovered on April 20 affected Vantage’s call center, website, email and “other internal systems” for at least eight days, but none of the trips had been affected specifically by this incident.

Dozens of complaints have been filed with the Better Business Bureau. And those who are trying to get their money back say they’re getting unclear timelines from the company.

One couple canceled by Vantage said they will now look elsewhere for booking travel

Charles and Lea Moskowitz, both 75 of Daytona Beach, are also waiting for a refund of more than $20,000 after their “tulips” trip was canceled. The couple had traveled with Vantage for more than two decades, visiting all seven continents over 28 incident-free trips.

The couple’s first trip in the summer of 2000 took them to Scandinavia, the Baltics and part of Russia. This past April, they were looking forward to their 29th trip to the “Stans,” as Charles called it, traveling through Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan for the first time.

Two weeks prior to the voyage, Vantage notified them the trip had been rescheduled for later that year, he said. That wasn’t going to work with their schedule, so the couple opted to go on a cruise they had done before, but didn’t mind.

Then, a voicemail message popped up on their answering machine. “There’s some bad news,” the Vantage representative said, according to the recording shared with The Post. The ship was not ready, the representative said, who then asked to call an 800 number to review their options.

“We’ve never had an issue like this before,” Charles Moskowitz said.

Despite the company's previously blemish-free track record with Moskowitz and his wife, he'll book future travel elsewhere.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.

Fact Check: Video Purportedly Shows Wine Retrieved from Titanic Sold for $1.4 Million at Auction. Here's the Truth

A video shows a bottle of wine retrieved from the Titanic wreckage that sold for $1.4 million at auction.

Miscaptioned ( About this rating? )

On April 30, 2024, online users began virally sharing a video on Facebook , Instagram , YouTube and X , with a rumor claiming the clip showed a bottle of wine recovered from the wreckage of the Titanic selling for $1.4 million at auction.

The video showed a man wearing a suit jacket carefully opening a bottle of wine visibly covered in what looked to be marine organisms. Other clips showed crates of wine purportedly also recovered from the ill-fated voyage of Titanic, which struck an iceberg on April 14, 1912, and sank hours later in the early hours of the following morning, leading to the deaths of around 1,500 passengers and crew.

One of the most popular postings of the video received nearly 7 million views. TikTok user @momentsgang posted the clip on May 1. The on-screen caption read, "Original Sealed Bottle of Wine Retrieved from the Titanic Sold for $1.4M at Auction." Snopes has yet to confirm the true originator of the video.

"A sealed bottle of wine recovered from the Titanic has sold for a record-breaking $1.4 million at auction," the TikTok user claimed in the text caption alongside the video. "The Oceanic Reserve Champagne, produced by the 'Maritime Vineyards,' is one of few intact bottles salvaged from the wreck, making it a highly sought-after piece of history. The sale underscores the enduring fascination with the Titanic disaster and the value placed on preserving its memory."

Snopes has rated this rumor "Miscaptioned." The video was genuine and did not appear doctored but also did not show a bottle of wine recovered from Titanic selling at an auction for $1.4 million. We found no news articles describing any such auctions. Further, a Google search for "Oceanic Reserve Champagne" and "Maritime Vineyards" produced zero helpful results — indicating these were not genuine product or company names.

Finding Answers

Our extensive online search for the origins of the video — including performing reverse-image searches for various frames in the clip — initially produced no helpful answers. Then, we spotted a link in Google search results leading us to the truth.

The banner behind the man in the viral video matched the design of a bottle of SSN01 Classic from the award-winning Seafloor Storage No.1 wine company in Yantai, China. According to seafloorstoragewine.net , the wine-making process includes "six months of oak aging followed by 12 months of undersea storage" at an ocean depth of 18 meters (59 feet). The website also mentioned that Golden Times Winery supplies the grapes for the wine and limits annual production to 50,000 bottles. We reached out to the company via its contact form on the website but did not yet receive a response.

We have so far been unable to locate the names of the people who appeared in the video, nor were we able to find when and where the event depicted occurred. The Seafloor Storage No.1 wine company's website features only two blog articles from 2019 and 2020, both describing a China SeaFloor Storage Wine Culture Festival.

Champagne Bottles Found at Titanic Wreckage

Aside from the rumor about the video, ocean explorers truly discovered champagne bottles with corks intact at the final resting site of Titanic, according to a 1994 article published by the British newspaper Evening Sentinel .

French scientist Jean-Louis Michel and Marine geologist Robert Ballard led the joint French-American expedition that discovered the wreckage in 1985. The remains of the Titanic were found about 350 miles from Newfoundland and around 12,500 feet deep in the North Atlantic.

On July 19, 1986, UPI reported, "Ballard said the minisub's three-man crew discovered other artifacts, including champagne bottles that were being readied for a toast when an iceberg tore a hole in the Titanic."

Additional Information

For further reading about the Chinese wine company, we recommend an article from the Chinese-language website cnmjz.com and two stories from min.news.

In 2018, BusinessWorld published an unproven rumor about "a rich Asian collector" purportedly once buying six bottles of champagne recovered from the Titanic wreckage.

On Sept. 19, 1985 — just after the joint expedition to the wreckage of the Titanic —  Chicago Tribune reported an article that provided some details and perspective about the wine and champagne bottles that were on the ship when it sank.

Note: Translations with Google Translate sometimes produce errors. Some websites also referred to the Chinese-made wine as "Haizang No. 1" from the "Yantai Age Wine Co., Ltd."
