Three famous temples at Tirunindravur, Tamilnadu

Dr. B.N.V. Parthasarathi

Bhakthavatsala Perumal temple is located at Thirunindravur, Tamilnadu. It is revered as one of the 108 Divya Desam Temple dedicated to Bhagwan Vishnu (Varaha Avatar). Here Bhagwan Vishnu is worshipped as Bhaktavatsala Perumal and his consort Lakshmi as Ennai Petra Thayar (meaning Mother who gave birth to me) also called as Sri Sudhaa Valli. It is the 58th Divya Desam. This place is also known as Srinivasa Kshetram since Lord Vishnu came here and stayed for some time.

Legend of Sri Bhatavatsala Perumal Temple

Legend is that Sagara (Varuna Deva), who is the father of Devi Lakshmi worshipped Bhagwan Vishnu here. Thiruninravur is considered as the place of Goddess as she settled here first and then Lord came here to Her place. The rarity of this temple is that Sri Bhakthavatsala Perumal is staying permanently at his in-law’s place. As Goddess settled here first, the place itself had got its name after her. In Thamizh, ‘Thiru’ means Sri Lakshmi, ‘Ninra’ means stood, ‘Vur’ means place.

The Devas and Asuras jointly churned the White Sea with a mountain (Mandhara) by using Vasuki the snake as a rope. While churning the sea Nectar came out which has the power of keeping anyone alive without death. At that time Devi Lakshmi came out along with the Nectar from the sea and she got attracted by the beauty and majesty of Bhagwan Vishnu. She decided to marry him and to realise her wish she came to Thiruninravur and did a serious penance.

Bhagwan Vishnu was pleased and came there with all the Devas and got married at this place. The Devas after seeing this memorable incident did not want to leave this place. Hence, they turned themselves into bees and started living there. (Still there are bee hives in the temple that are preserved by the temple authorities).

The temple is said to be built in the sixth century AD by the Pallava kings. There are engravings which reveal that king Nandi Varma had originally built the temple. The earliest inscriptions of the temple are dated between 820 to 890 AD during the period of Nripatungavarman. There are inscriptions from the later Chola kings like Rajendra Chola II (1051–1063 AD), Virarajendra Chola (1063–1070 AD) and Rajaraja Chola II (1146–1173 AD). The Pallava inscriptions mention this place as Ninravur and some of them quote it as Virudhurajabhayankar-chaturvertimangalam.

The main tower is an architectural splendour which is a five decked Raja Kopuram. Opposite to the main temple Gopuram is a temple to Lord Hanuman. The king of all the snakes Adisesha also has a shrine in this temple. Other deities worshiped in this temple are Andal who loved Sri Krishna and got merged with him and other Alwars who are the traditional devotees of Bhagwan Vishnu who have attained salvation by their devotion.

The height of the Main deity is around 10 ft (3.0 m). The Utsava Moorthy (procession deity) is called Patharaavi is made of panchaloha and is accompanied by two consorts as in most Vaishnavite temples. There is a separate shrine for the goddess Ennai Petra Thayar (also called Sudhavalli), the consort of Bakthavasala.

One of the incarnations of Bhagwan Vishnu is ‘Vamana’. During this avatar he took his original shape and lifted his mighty legs that went up to Brahma Loka and Bhagwan Brahma washed the leg and performed abhishekam with the holy water from his kamandalam. A drop of it spilled out and the drop is said to have become the holy pond in this temple which is called as punniyatheertham (holy waters). This holy water is believed to have removed the curse on Moon God when he took bath here. It is said that Bhagwan Vishnu himself took the water and performed Abhishekam to Devi Lakshmi and hence she is also called as Abhisheka Valli.

The Bakthavatsala Perumal temple follows the traditions of the Tenkalai sect of Vaishnavite tradition and follows Pancharatra rituals.

Shaiva Kshetram

Tirunindravur is also the home town of  Pusalar , who is one of the sixty-three Nayanar saints mentioned in Periyapuranam. Periyapuranam is a Tamil poetic account depicting the lives of the sixty-three  Nayanars , the canonical poets of Tamil  Shaivism . It was compiled during the 12th century by  Sekkilhar . Among all the hagiographic  Puranas  in Tamil, Sekkilhar’s  Tiruttondar Puranam  or  Periyapuranam , composed during the rule of  Kulottunga II  (1133–1150 CE) stands first. Pusalar conceives the design of the temple which he wanted to build for Bhagwan Shiva in his deep worship.

Meanwhile, Rajasimha Pallava, the King of Kanchi had undertaken the task of erecting a temple for Bhagwan Shiva. On the completion of the task, the king wanted it to be named Rajasimeswaram and duly consecrated. Hence the king fixed a date for the consecration. The Lord appears in King’s dream and directs him to meet Pusalar. The King realizes the ardent devotion of Pusalar and builds the temple as conceived by Pusalar and after that he performs the consecration ceremony for the Rajasimeswaram temple built by himself.

Pusalar’s temple for Bhagwan Shiva became famous as Hridayaleeswara temple. The inner roof of the temple is designed like that of a heart divided into four compartments probably displaying Poosalaar’s conception. Parvati here is worshipped as Maragathambika. Poosalaar’s statue is found with folded hands in the shrine of Hridayaleeswara (also known as Irudhayaleeeswara).  Irudhayaleeswara is also worshipped as Manavaleswara. People with an ailing heart are said to visit this temple seeking the grace of Irudayaleeswara for speedy recovery. The temple has a 5 tier gopuram at the entrance and two precincts.

Rama Temple

The Rama temple of Tiruninravur is known as Kaiunakaramurti and Daasharathi and fondly referred to as Eri Katha Rama. This small shrine of Rama facing east is located in a very scenic spot about half a kilometer west of the Bhaktavatsala Perumal temple, with the holy tank known as Ksheera Pushkarini on one side and bordered by the vast lake named Varuna Pushkarini on another. The legend associated with Lord’s name as Eri Katha Rama goes as follows.

It is believed that the lake in Tiruninravur was once flooded in a storm and the bunds were in the verge of breaking when the villagers prayed to Sri Rama. Sri Rama is said to have created a fence of arrows around the lake that prevented it from breaking whereby the village was saved. The villagers showed their gratitude by building a temple on the banks of the lake for Sri Rama. Thus, the name Eri Katha Rama, which means Rama who controlled the Lake from getting overflown and flooding the town.

There is an interesting episode connected with this temple. It is believed that once, the sister of Sri Ramanuja named Nachiyaramman and her husband Ananta Dikshitar came from nearby Sri Purushamangalam (now called Nazarethpettai near Poondamallee). This couple did not have children for a long time. On their way to Tirumala Hills (Tirupati) they halted for the night in Tiruninravur at the Eri Katha Rama temple.

Sri Rama appeared to Ananta Dikshitar in his dream and bestowed him with a boon that he would get a son who would be His own incarnation. Just as Ramanuja of Sriperumbudur was the incarnation of Adisesha, he was named Daasharathi (Rama, the son of Dasaratha) later known as Mudaliyandan (i.e., Vishwakshena, commander in chief of the army of Bhagwan Vishnu) who became Ramanuja’s very ardent disciple.

This tiny Rama temple, which is built on a slightly elevated level, enshrines the very tall images of Rama, Lakshmana and Sita on the same pedestal. The height of the Rama image, the principal deity is approximately eight feet and the other images are equally tall. The captivating image of Rama is two-armed holding a bow and arrow. His brother Lakshmana is placed next to him. He is seen with his hands in an unusual posture as if holding his bow in a horizontal way.

The graceful image of Sita with a beautiful smile, holding a lotus is placed to Rama’s right. The three deities are made of stucco (composed of sand and hydrated lime mixed with water). The stucco images are fascinating and they are reminiscent of the similar imposing stucco images of Ulagalanda Perumal and few other deities found in the temples in Kanchipuram. The beautiful processional images or utsava murtis of Sri Rama, Lakshmana, and Devi Sita and Hanuman of this temple are kept in a separate shrine very near the main sanctum inside the Bhaktavatsala Perumal temple.

In front of the main sanctum of the Rama temple of Tiruninravur there is a small-pillared mandapa. In this small mandapa is enshrined a unique image of Hanuman who is seen carrying Rama and Lakshmana on his shoulders with the legs of the heroes hanging on side, front and back. Hanuman holds a scepter and a shield in his right and left hand respectively. He is seen treading on the writhing figure of a demoness. This image of Hanuman very much conforms to the episodes of the legends and myths.

At the time of the Brahmotsavam in the Bhaktavatsala Perumal temple, the processional image of Perumal visits the Rama temple in Mohini avataram. This shrine, just like the Bhaktavatsala Perumal temple, follows the Pancharatra rituals of worship.

Pilgrims going to Tirunindravur can visit all the three temples, Viz., Bhaktavatsala Perumal, Hridayaaleswara and Lord Rama as they are located very near to one another.

Temple opening time.

The temple remains open from 06.00 AM to 12.30 PM and 04.00 PM to 08.30 PM.

Masi Maha Shivarathri in February-March; Makara Sankranti- Pongal falling almost on January 14 or a day before or after in some years occasionally; Panguni Uthiram in March-April; Vaikasi Visakam in May-June; Vinayaka Chaturthi in August-September; Navarathri in September-October; Margazhi Arudra Darshan in December-January; Karthikai in November-December are the main festivals observed in the temple. Other Shiva related days as Pradosha, Mondays and Fridays, Tamil New Year Day, new moon days, full moon days are celebrated with special pujas and abisheks.

As Poosalar kept Lord Shiva in his heart, worshiped him and built an imaginary temple for the lord, many suffering from heart problems pray to Hridayaleeswarar for a cure. The power of Hridayaleeswarar is so famous that cardiologists in Chennai, Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur visit Thirunindravur and pray at this Shiva temple before they perform major surgery. Those suffering from heart diseases pray here on Mondays. Devotees perform abishek, archanas and offer vastras to Lord and Mother.

Legend / Local stories

The story of this temple dates back to 7th century during Pallava reign. There was a Shiva devotee living in this place during 7 th  century called Poosalar. who had a desire to build a temple for Lord Shiva at this place unfortunately he could not find funds for the same. Poosalar finally decided to build a temple for the Lord by himself, as he was well read and knew all the Aagama Vidhis and nuances to build a temple, he wanted to start building the temple in his mind.

He sat under a tree called Iluppai and started meditating. He planned each and every small detail to perfection for the construction of this temple in his mind itself. He also marked an auspicious day to commence the holy work. The temple work progressed in his mind. He built the temple step by step. He had designed everything in his mind right from Vimana, Sanctum, Temple Pond, Compound walls etc., and executed each in detail as per what he had in mind.

After the temple construction work came to a finish. He even had organised all the utensils required for the temple. Finally, he also fixed an auspicious date for Kumbabishekam (consecration) of the temple. He prayed to Lord Shiva to be present for the consecration and offer His blessings. During the same period, a Pallava king called Rajasimha was ruling this part, with his capital as Kanchi (today’s Kanchipuram). He also was a sincere devotee of Lord Shiva and was building a huge beautiful temple for the Lord, at Kanchi.

He named the God as Kailasanathar and the temple as Rajasimmeswaram. The king was too proud to see the grandeur of the temple constructed by him. The king also marked a date for consecration, while the finishing touches were going on at the temple. Lord Shiva appeared in his dream and told him that he cannot make it to the consecration of the king’s temple on the said date and asked him to change the day of consecration, as he had to be present for consecration of another temple built by Poosalar of Thiruninravur.

The king woke up shocked. He wanted to know about the temple which God informed him of. He immediately started with his queen, ministers to see Poosalaar’s temple at Thiruninravur. He came to Thiruninravur the next day and enquired with many people about a new Shiva temple built by Poosalar. Nobody knew anything about the temple but directed the king to the place where Poosalar was meditating under the Iluppai tree. King went and asked Poosalar himself about the temple.

Poosalar, on hearing the king explaining about his dream, was overwhelmed to realize the mercy shown to him by Lord Shiva. Poosalar explained to the king that he had been constructing the temple in his heart (Manasu in Thamizh) and had fixed a date for consecration. Poosalar made the king to look at his heart and realize the temple which he constructed. King was able to see and realize the temple made by Poosalar.

Knowing this Rajasimha was amazed to see the devotion and sincerity of Poosalar. The king himself took all the specifications of the temple which Poosalar had in mind and physically constructed a temple for the Lord here. This temple is also called Manakkoil. As Poosalar originally built the temple for the Lord in his Hridayam, the Lord here is known as Hridayaleeswarar.

Thiruninravur Sri Hridhayaaleeswarar

By Saravanan Iyer

TSH1.jpg

Thiruninravur (திருநின்றவூர்) is situated in Thiruvallur District and is about 35 kms from Chennai. On the road from Chennai to Thiruvallur, one has to turn right after Thirumazhisai. From there Thiruninravur is about 4 kms. Thiruninravur can also be reached by Suburban trains from Chennai to Arakkonam, after Pattabiram. Thiruninravur has an ancient temple for Lord Shiva which is about 1500 years old. The main deity here is called Sri Hridhayaaleeswarar. The Goddess here is Sri Maragadhaambigai.

The story of this temple dates back to 7th century during Pallava reign. There was a Shiva devotee living in this place during 7th century called Poosalaar. He has been an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva . Poosalaar had an extreme ambition in his mind to build a temple for Lord Shiva at this place within his lifetime. He sought for help with many rich people who can fund him to raise a temple. But hardly anyone helped him. Knowing that he won’t get any help, Poosalaar finally decided to build a temple for the Lord by himself, at his heart itself. As he was well read and knew all the Aagama Vidhis and nuances to build a temple, he wanted to start building the temple.

He sat under a tree called Iruppai tree in the village and started meditating. He planned each and every small detail to perfection for the construction of his own temple in his mind itself. He also marked an auspicious day to commence the holy work. The temple started growing up in his mind. It is said that Poosalaar actually took the same time (or months) which will be consumed to construct an actual temple. He built the temple step by step. He had designed everything in his mind right from Vimana, Sanctum, Temple Pond, Compound walls etc., and executed each in detail as per what he had in mind.

After everything shaped up in his mind the temple construction work came to a finish. He even had organised all the utensils required for the temple. Finally, he also fixed an auspicious date for Kumbhabishegam (consecration) of the temple. He prayed to Lord Shiva to be present for the consecration and offer His blessings. During the same period, a king called Rajasimma Pallava was ruling this part, with his capital as Kaanchi (today’s Kanchipuram ). He also was a sincere devotee of Lord Shiva and was building a huge beautiful temple for the Lord, at Kaanchi. He also named the God as Kailasanathar and the temple as Rajasimmeswaram.

The king also marked a date for consecration, while the finishing touches were going on at the temple. One day after visiting the progress of the temple work, he was very tired when he went to bed. Lord Shiva appeared in his dream and told him that He cannot make it to the consecration of the king’s temple on the said date and asked him to change the day of consecration, as He had to be present for consecration of another temple built by Poosalaar of Thiruninravur.

The king woke up shockingly and couldn’t believe himself. He was worried that God Himself has given priority to someone else’s temple than his temple. He wanted to know about the temple which God informed him of. He immediately started with his queen, ministers and parivaar to see Poosalaar’s temple at Thiruninravur.

He came to Thiruninravur the next day and enquired with many people about a new Shiva temple built by Poosalaar. Nobody knew anything about the temple but directed the king to the place where Poosalaar was meditating under the Iruppai tree. King went and asked Poosalaar himself about the temple. Poosalaar, on hearing the king explaining about his dream, was overwhelmed to realize the mercy shown to him by Lord Shiva . Poosalaar explained the king that he had been constructing the temple in his heart (Manasu in Thamizh) and had fixed a date for consecration.

Poosalaar made the king to look at his heart and realize the temple which he constructed. King was able to see and realize the temple made by Poosalaar. Knowing this Rajasimma was amazed to see the devotion and sincerity of Poosalaar. The king himself took all the specifications of the temple which Poosalaar had in mind and physically constructed a temple for the Lord here. This temple is also called Manakkoil. As Poosalaar originally built the temple for the Lord in his Hridayam, the Lord here is known as Hridhayaaleeswarar.

Though there are 2 entrances to this temple, on east and west, the Lord here faces east here. There is a grand Dhwajasthambha and Nandhi on the outer prakaaram. The sanctum is built in Gajabrishta or Thoongaanai Maadam (தூங்கானை மாடம்) shape, that is, the sanctum's shape will look like the back of the sleeping elephant. Lord Hridhayaaleeswarar offers dharshan in the form of a Shiva Lingam. Poosalaar is seen praying the Lord. There is an idol of Rajasimma Pallavan too inside the temple.

Sri Ganapathy and Sri Subramanyar are seen standing on either side of the entrance of the sanctum like Dwarapaalakas. Other deities like Sri Dhakshinamurthy, Naalvar, Sri Maha Vishnu , Sri Siva Subramanyar with Sri Valli and Sri Devasena , Sri Brahma , Sri Durgai, Sri Sandigeswarar, Sri Sivagama Sundari Sametha Sri Natarajar and Sri Bairavar are seen in the inner praakaarams. Wonderful carvings are seen on the pillars of the temple, but many of them painted white, hiding their originality. There is also a mandapam in which Vaahanam (Rishabham) for the Lord is kept for Urchavams. Many devotees in recent years have started worshipping Lord here, for getting recovered from heart ailments, as the Lord himself is called Hridayaaleeswarar. A beautiful temple worth a short drive, away from Chennai.

Thiruvallur District

A serene, little town that has for years grown silently in the shadows of its big neighbour – chennai; now a sparkling and sprawling urban centre with many big surprises within for a discerning traveller. thiruvallur is waiting for you to explore..

Located on the banks of the Cooum River, Thiruvallur is a part of the Chennai Metropolitan Area. The growth of Chennai benefitted Thiruvallur over the time and thus we see a lot of developmental activities going on in the region. Despite being an industrial centre, Thiruvallur still embraces the glory of the past, as can be seen in various landmarks that adorn the region.  The etymology of the name Thiruvallur itself is a factor of great interest and amusement. It is said to be derived from the Tamil sentence ‘Tiru evvul’. ‘Tiru’ means ‘god’ and ‘Evvul’ means ‘where do I sleep’. Thiruvallur is believed to be the place where God Veera Raghavar asked a saint for a place to be sleep for a night. Hence the name. The Veer Raghavar temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu is one of the most important landmarks in the area to this day, visited by devotees and tourists from various parts of India.  Though a mythical name, the history of the destination dates many centuries back. A string of regimes ruled over this place across the centuries. It starts with the 7th century Pallavas. Towards the end of the 17th century, the place came under the rule of the Mughal empire. Many parts of Thiruvallur witnessed bloodshed across the changing times, including the Carnatic wars and the battles for supremacy between the French and the English.  If you love a bit of history, wish to go on a divine pilgrimage and like to be in a town that is fast-emerging as an industrial hub, Thiruvallur is where you need to be.

About Sri Hrudayaaleeswarar Sivan Temple Thirunindravur once saw the outpour of devotion of a devout heart as well as the reciprocated grace as a result of the intense devotion. Poosalaar, was a poor man in terms of material wealth but rich in dedicated devotion towards  Lord Shiva . His heart brimmed with love and devotion for the Lord. He was called Poosalaar as his body was always smeared with the sacred ash, (Tamil-Poosu-Apply). Bhagavan Ramana says that the right kind of desire on the spiritual path will condition an aspirant to become one with the divine ultimately. Poosalaar was not an exception to this and he yearned to erect a beautiful temple for his heart’s favourite. However he became the object of people’s ridicule for his herculean desire in his impoverished condition.

Poosalaar however was not deterred by the words of the people. His heart was large enough to house Shiva’s temple and his love served to implement the task with ease. Meanwhile, Rajasimha Pallava, the King of Kanchi had undertaken the task of erecting a temple for Lord Shiva. On the completion of the task, the king wanted it to be named Rajasimeswaram and duly consecrated. Hence the king fixed a date for the consecration. The day before the assigned date the king’s heart was brimming with pride of having erected a beautiful temple for the Lord as his eyes shut with his thoughts vanishing into his sleep. The Lord appeared in his dream and stated that He will not be able make present Himself in the consecration ceremony as He will be present in the consecration ceremony of another temple built by an ardent devotee, Poosalaar. Hence the king was asked by the Lord to choose another date to have Him installed ceremoniously on another day in the temple built by him.

The surprised king immediately commanded the culmination of the ceremonies associated with the temple consecration and proceeded to check out on the temple of Poosalaar. Coming to know that Poosalaar lived in a nearby town he set out towards  Thirunindravur . The king was perplexed on the results of his enquiry that Poosalaar lived in poverty and there was not a sign of a new  temple  being erected in  Thirunindravur . Counting on the Lord’s words, the King sought to meet Poosalaar who was meditating under a tree. The king approached Poosalaar and stated the purpose of his visit. Poosalaar replied with joy to have a look at the ceremonious installation of Lord Shiva in the temple that he had built. Lo and Behold! The king witnessed the consecration ceremony of the temple built by Poosalaar within the heart of Poosalaar, with the chanting of the Vedas and other ceremonial activities!

It was then that the king realized that the poor devotee had visualized his desire stage by stage within his heart, surrendering his will and wish to his beloved Lord. The pure devotion and the unconditional love for the Lord had led the almighty to be enshrined in his heart forever. The king then materialized the temple that Poosalaar had built in the cavern of his heart before having the temple built by him duly consecrated. He called the deity ‘Hrudayaaleeswarar’, the one who abides in the heart. Poosalaar is one of the sixty three Nayanmars  stated in the Periyapuranam.
