The Final Vans Warped Tour – Detroit

warped tour 2011 lineup detroit

Vans Warped Tour Meadow Brooke Amphitheatre – Rochester Hills – 7.20.18 Photographers: Kailey Howell and Alexis Backus*

It was bittersweet as Meadow Brook Amphitheatre hosted what would be Detroit’s last stop on the full cross country run of Vans Warped Tour. The date had sold out weeks in advance, leaving the crowd highly anticipated for the long day of sets.

The gates opened and fans quickly flooded the venue, catching one of the many opening bands such as Tonight Alive , Sharptooth , Makeout or Detroit’s own A War Within .

This is one of the first years in a while that it was not a sweltering 90+ degrees. However, as the clouds rolled in the rain did cause minor delays for the main stages. Unfortunately, the local stage that was to feature bands such as Our Vices , Torchbearer and Scapegoat was permanently shut down due to weather. This proved to be a fault on the tour’s end, as the sun quickly came back out.

“For us, Warped Tour was an awesome experience. Despite not getting to play, we still had an amazing time and got to experience all of Warped for it was. We were thankful to be able to say we were still part of the last full country Warped Tour.” said Brandon Murdoch of Torchbearer.

“Although cliche sounding, Warped was that one day of the year where you were free from everything going on in the world and could just run around a huge parking lot watching your favorite bands with your friends.” said Jon Rechsteiner, “Being in a band who always aspired to play I am very grateful we got the opportunity this year as well as last despite the rain.”

Caleb Shomo of Beartooth  gave a heartfelt speech about the importance of Warped, and thanked Kevin Lyman for the opportunities it presented bands and fans.

The Detroit date featured a handful of bands that were not on the entire cross country run such as Silverstein , Capstan, Bowling for Soup ,  and  Four Year Strong .

The Full Sail Stage also featured local talent from Boys of Fall ,  For We Are Many, Vegas Lights and Southpaw .

The line up this year featured a blend of genres, from pop icons 3OH!3 to pop punk legends Simple Plan to some of the heaviest of bands like Kublai Khan.

warped tour 2011 lineup detroit

The Warped Tour has always been a pretty special event. It’s like the Superbowl of alternative rock or some bizarre musical all-star game. From old favorites like Simple Plan and Less Than Jake to new bands on the rise, it’s almost overwhelming to look at the lineup and try to plan out what stages you’re going to rush to and when. But being overwhelmed is a part of the experience. So is getting doused with bottled water by the stage security, wading through Monster cans while trying to find a restroom and finding yourself suddenly hoisted up onto a massive bed of screaming head-bangers and carried towards the stage by a thousand arms bearing spike-studded bracelets.

The actual performances were just as expected: wild, rampant and loud 30-minute sets from musicians with enough energy to power the whole city. There were singers leaping into the crowd without warning, often bearing

microphones and guitars, band members spewing mouthfuls of beer onto lucky front row fans, guitars breaking, drum sticks snapping and young emo couples seeking shelter behind fences, amplifiers and other young emo couples. Personally, I was delightfully out of my element.

It was cool to see Simple Plan still kicking it. Their set seemed to attract the largest crowd, up until HelloGoodbye’s performance, which was the last of the night. When they were done playing I went to their stand to find at least two-hundred people in line to meet them. The Devil Wears Prada were also impressive, delivering the manic energy that fans have come to expect from one of their live shows. Relient K and August Burns Red were other highlights, but really, you couldn’t go wrong no matter what stage you directed your attention towards. Every band came to play, and play hard.

I’ll be honest, people-watching is nearly as entertaining as watching the bands themselves. The Warped Tour is a stage on which thousands of distinct personalities can represent themselves to their music world–fans and musicians alike. Many people wore the name of their favorite band across their shirt, and many people decided that shirts weren’t really necessary. I saw spiked hair that could have been considered a legitimate weapon, piercings in painfully imaginative places and tattoos that seemed to tell the stories of past Warped Tour experiences.

Despite the diversity of appearances, everyone was there for the same reasons, including myself. I saw more

bands play in one day than I usually do in a whole summer. I experienced the crazy parts of touring that bands like Blink-182 write songs about. I saw Detroit very much alive, with sunshine blanketing Comerica Park and the thousands of fans and hundreds of musicians that came from all over the country to party in Detroit Rock City.

Diversity found at Vans Warped Tour 2011 in Detroit

Every summer, a throng of die-hard music-lovers converge in the parking lot of Comerica Park in Detroit for the Vans Warped Tour. The day long music festival — dedicated to the music and mayhem that typifies skate culture — draws a crowd of surprisingly diverse characters ranging from adolescents to adults, scenesters to hipsters and goths to straight-edge punks.

If this year’s crowd proves anything, it’s that the ideals of adolescent rebellion, solidarity and outright zaniness that gave life to Warped in the mid-’90s are still alive and well. A sea of black t-shirts mill to and fro between nine stages, each declaring its wearer’s vulgar, tongue-in-cheek philosophy.

“F*** you, I’m fat,” announces the shirt of a stout, thirty-something concertgoer. “My feet hurt … from kicking so much ass,” declares another.

These brazen attitudes aren’t just shared by the Warped fans, but by the musicians they worship. A screamed introduction thunders through the air to kick off the first band playing the tour’s Advent Clothing stage, one of nine soapboxes scattered across the ballpark lot.

“We are a sucky band, and I am a miserable human being!” announces the lead singer, who avoids mentioning his band’s name and instead cuts straight to the chase.

“Everybody raise your middle fingers in the air,” he demands. Once he’s satisfied that at least half the crowd is complying, he cracks a sinister smile. “Now, that’s what I call a sea of ‘f***-yous!’ “ At that, the fans’ screams dissolve amidst a rollicking hardcore breakdown, the moshing commences and random objects sail through the air like dollar bills at a strip club.

Unlike the fickle, gimmicky commentary that accompanies most live performances, the singer’s words sound unusually sincere. That’s because the Warped Tour faithful aren’t here to live vicariously through the bands. Often, the lives of the bands, their fans and the other Warped attendees are one and the same, rooted in the rabid fan culture of skateboarding.

Just ask Pipinnetti, a teen who came all the way from Albuquerque, N.M. to compete in the Vans Skate Amateur Mini-Ramp Skate Jam, a competition that gives young trick skaters the chance to prove themselves on a small half-pipe, driven by the encouragement of their light-footed comrades and the attention of a smattering of passersby.

“I didn’t come here for the bands,” said the beater-clad teen in a matter-of-fact monotone. “I came up here to skate, for a chance to go to Hollywood.”

Nearby, a beardy, brawny Warped representative sits in a metal folding chair, intently watching every ollie, grind and kick-flip. His name is Brent, and he explains that he’s sitting in at every tour stop to judge the ability of each and every would-be Tony Hawk. At each stop the top skaters are declared finalists and win prizes ranging from shoes to small cash rewards. The best from the entire tour are flown to California to skate at a larger event for a monetary prize and the publicity that they hope will turn their dreams into careers.

Many of Warped Tour’s veteran acts have memories — at once fond and painful — of their time as aspiring skaters, when their dreams were as profound as those of Pippinetti.

“My music career was made at a time in my life when I was squatting with a bunch of other skaters in an abandoned house called The Blue Room,” said Scott Russo — frontman of the punk rock act Unwritten Law — in an interview with The Michigan Daily. “My whole life revolved around doing drugs and trying to be a professional skater.”

Russo, whose band produced the chart-climbing singles “Save Me (Wake Up Call)” and “Seein’ Red,” is an intriguing combination of roughneck and fragile. Clutching an oversized plastic vaporizer cigarette in one hand and an umbrella in the other, he speaks with an undertone of restlessness in his voice.

When asked why he’s chosen to weather the hardships of a broken home, a lifelong battle with drug abuse and countless creative differences (his band has released six studio albums, released by almost as many different labels), his response is as pointed as Pippinetti’s.

“No matter what we do as a band, I always feel like something’s incomplete,” Russo said. “I can’t stop until I finish what I started.”

The resilience that carried Unwritten Law through 20 years of trials and tribulations is a welcome mantra at this year’s Warped Tour, especially in an era of the dwindling record sales figures.

But as mainstream music adapts to the advent of bigger and better technologies, the bands at Warped Tour adapt with it. In an attempt to mitigate the decreased interest in punk rock purism, Warped has taken on more and more genre-bending bands in recent years — this year’s lineup included plenty.

A noteworthy example is the metalcore group Attack Attack! from Westerville, Ohio. Their set features the choppy, distorted guitars and double-bass drums of metal coupled with healthy doses of techno and Autotune.

Bands like Attack Attack! embody a widespread trend in which older music genres like pop and rock draw more and more from the contemporary influences of hip hop and electronica. In addition to the ska, pop-punk and rock tradition of Warped Tour and the trendy hip hop/electronic crossover bands of recent years, Warped went a step further by including several straight rap and dubstep acts in this year’s line-up, many of whom performed on a local stage tailored specifically to the Detroit music scene.

“This is my first year,” said Nevadan rapper Big B in an interview with The Michigan Daily. “We’re not your average Warped Tour band, so it was awesome that we not only got invited out here, but drew a big crowd of kids.”

Featuring a variety of musicians is one of the ways Warped Tour has broadened its audience base over the years when its grown from a fledgling tour with barely fifteen bands in 1995 to a festival-sized attraction with over a 100 live acts and numerous tents catering to an eclectic amalgam of techies, metalheads, charitable donors, skaters, cyberpunks and about every other subculture one might imagine to exist. Who ever said punk rock was dead?

Warped Tour brings rock with a side of nostalgia on final Detroit stop

warped tour 2011 lineup detroit

For more than two decades, it was one of the most dependable sights on the summer concert calendar.

And now the Vans Warped Tour has bid farewell to Detroit for good, hitting Meadow Brook Amphitheatre on Friday as the punk and alternative rock festival moves into its final two weeks.

A generations-spanning crowd filled the rolling hills and fields of the Rochester Hills site, where Warped served up 70-plus bands on a musically upbeat day that came with a sad and sentimental undercurrent. It was a lineup where fest veterans (Simple Plan, Bowling For Soup, Less Than Jake) played alongside the sort of up-and-comers Warped has long helped to break.

As always, set times weren’t revealed until the day of show — posted on a big board near the main entrance Friday morning. In keeping with the festival’s progressive ethos, it was as egalitarian as ever: Nobody was billed as a headliner, and the big-name bands were scattered across six stages, including Meadow Brook’s main amphitheater, throughout the 12-hour event.

After some early afternoon rain, the sun was out by the time the Maine hit the stage at 4 p.m. to deliver a fitting blast of ‘90s nostalgia with a cover of Blur’s whoo-hoo’ing “Song 2.” In matching red outfits and backed by a couple of dozen fans onstage, the Arizona band whipped up bouncy pop-rock via songs like “Everything I Ask For” and “Girls Do What They Want.”

Across the way, Palaye Royale did guyliner-streaked glam with garage-rock swagger, as Australia’s Amity Affliction drilled through a set of metal-fueled hardcore.

It was testament to the eclectic spirit that has driven Warped since it emerged in 1995 as part of that decade’s array of road festivals, tours that included Lollapalooza, Ozzfest, H.O.R.D.E. and Lilith Fair. Warped was long since the lone survivor of that traveling bunch, but rising costs and a changing concert industry finally convinced founder Kevin Lyman to pull the plug.

Music culture has certainly morphed dramatically since the mid-'90s, but if there were worries the Warped Tour had become a stale brand, you wouldn’t have known it Friday: Meadow Brook was jam-packed — the show sold out two weeks ago — and most fans seemed to arrive with the excitement and quest for discovery that has always marked the event.

For 24 years, metro Detroit was one of Warped’s most successful markets, and the fest played the sprawling grounds of sites such as Pontiac’s Phoenix Plaza, the Pontiac Silverdome, the Palace of Auburn Hills and Comerica Park. Friday was the first time at the smaller-scale Meadow Brook, whose lush feel and grass fields gave it a big edge over the hard pavement of those prior stops.

For 26-year-old Claire Kuhn, who grew up in Rochester Hills and now lives in Manhattan, it was a bittersweet day. She’d attended her first Warped fest at 14, and this year’s denouement was sad news: “I cried every time I heard that,” she said.

“I knew my final Warped Tour needed to be in Detroit,” said Kuhn. For the price of a rental car and a $50 ticket, “I feel like I got a bargain to relive my childhood.”

Standing in the Meadow Brook pavilion just after We the Kings’ set, Kuhn said it was like being back in high school — though this time many fans from her age cohort had shown up with their own young kids in tow.

Warped’s colorful midways offered the familiar arrangement of record-label tents, merchandise booths, carnival food and — of course — the prominent presence of shoe sponsor Vans, which did brisk business in “Warped Final Run” T-shirts. Nearby was a skateboard halfpipe, a nod to the festival’s origins.

Social causes made their mark onsite: marrow-donor signups, “Born This Way” pride merchandise, STAPAW.com — a global effort to Support Tattoos and Piercings at Work.

For the suicide prevention group Hope for the Day, this was Warped Tour number five, and founder Jonny Boucher has become a familiar onstage presence between band sets. The festival has been a prime spot to interact with vulnerable young people, helping de-escalate troubled situations and pushing the message: “It’s OK not to be OK.”

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among 15-to-24-year-olds — an age group that traditionally has constituted about 85% of the Warped audience, said the organization’s Christmas Eger.

The Warped partnership has "been incredible,” Eger said Friday, and the festival’s demise “is a real challenge for us" as the organization aims to stay connected with young music fans in summer 2019.

As perfectly delightful weather settled over Meadow Brook late Friday afternoon, the music kept humming — a blast of the brisk sets that have been the Warped Tour’s hallmark. On one stage roared the muscular, tattooed metalcore of Every Time I Die; nearby was the breezy, horn-spiced ska-punk of Reel Big Fish.

Amid the high spirits, the air of looming finality hung over the proceedings — and the moment wasn’t lost on fans and bands.

“It’s the last Warped Tour ever,” said Reel Big Fish front man Aaron Barrett, who promptly reacted to the predictable crowd response: “It’s OK to boo!”

All 25 Warped Tour Lineups, Ranked

Ranker Music

Warped Tour is one of the biggest names in the concert canon. Those who haven't gone want to and those who have gone wait for the day they can go again. For a majority of its run, it was the largest traveling music festival in the United States. A number of past Warped Tour lineups have been impressive, but which year was the best? Help decide below!

Starting as an eclectic alternative rock festival in 1995 and gradually morphing into a punk rock festival by the next year, the tour gained momentum when Vans, the wildly popular shoe manufacturer, was signed on as the tour's main sponsor in 1996. As Warped Tour became increasingly popular with each passing year, more sponsors signed on, slowly growing the tour's scope of influence. Sadly, 2018 proved to be the final year of the famous tour as announced by Warped Tour's founder, Kevin Lyman.

You'll find every Warped Tour lineup here! Vote below on the best Warped Tour lineups, keeping in mind factors like the bands performing, production value, and overall spectacle. If you're an avid concert-goer, you can also check out this list of the best Coachella lineups ! (Disclaimer - some years certain dates had slightly different lineups).

The decades-old Vans Warped tour is officially the longest running festival tour in the States, and it has helped to launch the careers of countless bands from a wider and wider array of genres each year.

Originally launched in 1995 with a lineup that was predominantly punk, the tour has expanded to include a variety of pop and hip hop acts. It has helped to launch the careers of bands like My Chemical Romance and Katy Perry . It has also served as a forum for bands that merge sounds, including 3OH3! and the band that holds the title for worst band ever - brokeNCYDE with their painful creation, crunkcore .

In addition to the official announcements, we kept tabs on all of the rumors.

In an interview with with Kerrang! magazine, Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman announced that British metalcore band "Bring Me The Horizon's going to be out with us all next summer," something that in this writer's opinion counts as an official announcement. Update: They'll were there but not for the whole summer.

According to another interview, California pop punk band Forever Came Falling was the first band officially confirmed for the 2013 lineup, as Warped Tour founder Kevin Lyman announced that the band was the first band confirmed for 2013 when they played at a screening of No Room For Rockstars.

The internets were saying that Orange County hardcore band Stick To Your Guns had confirmed that they would be appearing on the 2013 Vans Warped Tour. Update: This rumor was officially confirmed.

In addition, a handful of other rumors were circulating, including speculation that bands We Came As Romans, The Wonder Years, Memphis May Fire, and blessthefall would be appearing on the tour, but much of this seemed linked to survey results about who folks wanted to see and may or may not have had any bearing on the actual lineup for 2013. Update: blessthefall, Memphis May Fire, The Wonder Years, and We Came As Romans were all confirmed.

Many wished for a solid punk rock lineup from Lyman and co. in upcoming years. (Seriously, how great would it be to see Warped return more fully to its punk rock roots, leaving many of the other offerings from recent years to spawn their own tours that cater exclusively to the 14-year-old girls that love them?) You can help prepare by making sure you already have everything you need for next year's Warped Tour and keeping your thoughts Warped.
