Jumbo-Visma forced out of the Tour de Suisse due to Covid-19 case
Team says fresh positive will not effect Tour de France selection

Jumbo-Visma have pulled out of racing at the Tour de Suisse after announcing that Coronavirus cases have crept into the Dutch squad in Switzerland.
The team said that that after consultation with the race organisers withdrawal from participation was the only option.
It said: "Despite all precautions, corona has crept into the team again. In the interest of the health of the riders and staff and to protect the peloton and the race, the Dutch formation's medical and sporting management consider withdrawing from the Swiss race the wisest decision."
The Dutch team were affected by covid cases earlier on in the season when they were forced to close down a training camp in Alicante, Spain . One rider tested positive at the camp in January meaning it was quickly cancelled.
The squad was also quick to point out that despite "daily testing of riders and staff" the virus had still infiltrated the team. But they added that the testing had allowed them to identify and isolate the person infected as soon as possible.
It added: "The use of mouth masks, air purification columns and single rooms is still common practice on the team."
The squad did not reveal who had tested positive for covid-19, but said that "for the time being" the incident had "no consequences" on their upcoming Tour de France team shortlist.

Jumbo-Visma
Formerly Rabobank, Superconfex and Kwantum, as well as a host of others since starting life in 1984, Team Jumbo-Visma is the second longest running team at the top of the sport, beaten only by Movistar, which began as Reynolds in 1980. Over the past couple of years, the Dutch outfit have emerged as the new successors to Team Sky/Ines and cemented their position as the best team on the men’s WorldTour.
Their meteoric success isn’t just attributed to their superstars Wout van Aert, Jonas Vingegaard, and Primož Roglič, but also their entire team structure - from part-time staffers to full-time managers - and newfound focus on emerging young talent. Last year the team didn’t just achieve their big goal of winning the Tour de France, they smashed it out of the park.
Through the leadership of Vingegaard and Van Aert, but also the efforts of riders like Christophe Laporte, they came home with the yellow, green and polka-dot jerseys, as well as six individual stage victories. They’ve set an even loftier goal for the 2023 season: shepherd Vingegaard to a second Tour title and place Roglič on the top step of the Giro d’Italia’s podium.
On top of that, the team is also on the hunt for a Monument and, with the likes of Van Aert, Christophe Laporte, Tiesj Benootm and new-recruit Dylan van Baarle on their roster, will be able to muster one of the great one-day racing squads the sport has ever seen. Looking ahead to the future, the team has snapped up one of Great Britain’s hottest young prospects in Thomas Gloag.
They’ll be hoping that the London-born lad can hit the ground running in 2023 and, before long, prove to the world that he’s a worthy successor to Vingegaard and Roglič.

COVID forces Jumbo Visma to abandon Tour de Suisse
Team Jumbo-Visma did not appear at the start of the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse on Thursday. Despite precautions, COVID crept into the team again. In the interest of the health of the riders and staff and to protect the peloton and the race, the Dutch formation’s medical and sporting management considered withdrawing from the Swiss race the wisest decision. The decision was taken in consultation with the Tour de Suisse management.
Team Jumbo-Visma didn’t reveal who was infected. For now, the situation has no consequence for the Tour de France shortlist, which includes Sepp Kuss, although the team said it would have to wait and see what happens in the next few days.
The adequate action of Team Jumbo-Visma is based on the daily testing of riders and staff so that a possible case can be isolated as soon as possible. The use of masks, air purification columns and single rooms are still common practice on the team.
In addition to Team Jumbo-Visma’s seven riders who did not start on Thursday, eight other cyclists also withdrew.
The infection is a blow to Kuss, who was in contention in the general classification for the tour’s overall win.
Kuss remained 10 seconds out of the lead in the general classification after the fourth stage on Wednesday. The 190-kilometer stage had two categorized climbs, including a big one near the finish. After the big climb, the cyclists got an equal downhill to descend and then a flat to sprint to the finish. A big group rode to the finish line together, including Kuss, but Daryl Impey of Israel Premier-Tech was the first to cross in 4:14:09.
Kuss placed 28th on the stage in the same time.
“We tried to position Pascal (Eenkhoorn), Sepp and Sam (Oomen) as well as possible towards the final climb,” said sports director Marc Reef. “Sepp and Sam in particular made a good impression uphill. That is promising for the coming days. Our main goal is to keep Sepp and Sam up front in the coming stages.”
Unfortunately, COVID blocked the team’s goals.
Quinn Simmons of Trek Segafredo finished 126th on stage four, but remained in the KOM lead after both the fourth and fifth stages with 34 points. He is followed by Phillipe Gilbert of Lotto Soudal (12), Andreas Lekessund of Team DSM (10), Alexander Kamp of trek Segafredo and Simon Vitzthum of Switzerland (10).
Simmons finished 57th on the fifth stage, which Alexandr Vlasov of BORA – hansgrohe won in 4:30:28 to become the tour’s fifth different stage winner.
In the points race, Simmons is tied for second with Michael Matthews of Team Bike Exchange Jayco with 14 points, six behind Lekessund.
The Tour de Suisse will feature two more long stages before concluding with a time trial on Sunday.

Jumbo-Visma out of Tour de Suisse due to COVID outbreak
The team plays down how this could alter its tour de france roster..

Team Jumbo-Visma pulled out of the Tour de Suisse ahead of stage 5 on Thursday due to an outbreak of COVID-19 within the squad.
The team did not disclose the identities or the numbers of riders who tested positive for the virus. Heading into the stage, Sepp Kuss was poised in seventh overall, at just 10 seconds off the race lead.
“Team Jumbo-Visma will not appear at the start of the fifth stage of the Tour de Suisse today,” the team said in a statement released on Thursday morning.
“The reason is that despite all precautions, corona has crept into the team again. In the interest of the health of the riders and staff and to protect the peloton and the race, the Dutch formation’s medical and sporting management consider withdrawing from the Swiss race the wisest decision. The decision was taken in consultation with the Tour management. Team Jumbo-Visma doesn’t reveal who became a victim of the COVID infection.”
This isn’t the first time that COVID has had a major impact on the team. They pulled out of the Giro d’Italia in 2020 due to cases within the team.
In January of this year the team closed a training camp for the same reason. Both Jumbo-Visma and Team DSM then pulled out of Valenciana later in the spring after another batch of cases .

Several riders at the Tour de Suisse were in contention for a spot on Jumbo-Visma’s Tour de France team, including Kuss and Australian time trial specialist Rohan Dennis. The team admitted that the COVID outbreak could have an impact on Tour de France selections late down the line, but time was needed before any decisions would be made on that front.
“For the time being, the situation has no consequences for the Tour de France shortlist, although we have to wait and see what happens in the next few days,” the team said.
“The adequate action of Team Jumbo-Visma is based on the daily testing of riders and staff so that a possible corona case can be isolated as soon as possible. The use of mouth masks, air purification columns and single rooms is still common practice on the team.”

Kruijswijk holds 3rd overall in the Tour de Suisse
“Right from the start, a four-mean breakaway took off and from that point, the sprint teams controlled the race,” Sports Director Addy Engels said. “During the race, it became clear that at the second to last crossing of the finish line the times for the GC would be neutralised. Because of that, the sprint was a very small group. It was a tricky local lap so that is why the organisation made the decision. We wanted to get Steven safely through today’s stage and we succeeded in doing that.”
The cyclists race the last stage of the Tour de Suisse tomorrow, an individual time trial over 28.6 kilometres. Kruijswijk sits 1-05 minutes behind leader Simon Spilak and 13 seconds behind Damiano Caruso. Domenico Pozzovivo, in fourth, sits at 2-28 minutes.
“Normally, the gap between Steven and Spilak is too big. Spilak has shown he is capable of riding a very good time trial, as he did a few years ago. Maybe Steven can climb to second place by riding a good time trial and overtaking Caruso in the GC."
“We do not have to worry about opponents from behind Steven. The gap between Steven and the number four is big enough."
“We are going to prepare ourselves well for the time trial. We hope that Steven can grab the second place in the GC. We are here with some other riders who can ride a good time trial, too, but we have raced hard for some days.”

Rohan Dennis and Sepp Kuss lead Jumbo-Visma in Suisse in battle for Tour selection
Jumbo-Visma announced their lineup for the upcoming Tour de Suisse where they will be targeting stage wins, but also quite possibly the overall classification.
Dennis, albeit far from a climber, has finished here in second place back in 2019. At the Tour de Romandie he showed similar form, suggesting that with the right form the Australian may have another shot. Sepp Kuss , who rarely has the opportunity to lead the team, will also have freedom and the responsibility to perform in the high mountains where he should be amongst the best riders.
Preview: Tour de Suisse. Hills, Alps and fireworks to be had in a week-long carnage stage-race
Furthermore Mike Teunissen will try to go for stage wins, and to show the form required to be present at the Tour de France which will be no easy task. He will have the support of the likes of Pascal Eenkhoorn and Timo Roosen whilst Robert Gesink will provide more support in the mountains.
Jumbo-Visma for Tour de Suisse: Sepp Kuss, Sam Oomen , Pascal Eenkhoorn, Robert Gesink, Timo Roosen, Mike Teunissen and Rohan Dennis .

Team Jumbo-Visma goes into Tour de Suisse with open mind
The Tour de Suisse will take place from 12 to 19 June. Marc Reef will drive the team car during this stage race. The 36-year-old Dutchman is in his first season as a sports director at Team Jumbo-Visma.
According to Reef, his first months with the team went very smoothly. "After ten years with the same team, I ended up in a new environment with a different way of working. I had to put in some energy to get acquainted with it. I have been taken care of very well. Meanwhile, I already know all the staff and riders."
He feels right at home in the team. "I have found my place here. In my first months, I have already done several races. The Giro d'Italia was the last one. The Tour de Suisse is next."
"There are several options for a stage win"
Reef explains that the main objective in Switzerland is to win stages. "It is a tough race with many tough stages. Fortunately, we have a strong team at the start, although we do not focus on the classification. We are mainly aiming for stage wins. We can make it happen in different ways: in the breakaway or with a small group to the finish. We have the team for that. There are several options and we will see who fits best in each stage."
The Tour de Suisse consists of eight stages. In the first stage, the riders will face a hilly course in loops around Küsnacht. The following stages will also be hilly and from stage six onwards, the riders will visit the mountains. In this stage, the riders must climb the Nufenenpass, whose summit is at 2478 metres. The penultimate stage leads to Liechtenstein and also contains mountains. The final stage is a 25.6 km individual time trial in Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein.

Cycling news - Jumbo-Visma rider Tom Dumoulin returns at Tour de Suisse ahead of Olympics
Updated 13/05/2021 at 13:12 GMT
Jumbo-Visma have confirmed that their Dutch rider Tom Dumoulin will return to competitive cycling on June 6 when he takes part in the Tour de Suisse. Dumoulin announced in late January a sabbatical from cycling to assess his future. The 30-year-old intends to use the Swiss stage race to build fitness ahead of the Olympics in August.
