Manandhavady: To experience the surreal beauties of hilly terrains and lush green forests in Wayanad, book a seat in the morning safari package offered by Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) under the budget tourism initiative.

On Wednesday morning, KSRTC conducted its first Jungle Safari trip from Mananthavady, with all 49 seats booked on the bus.

Last year, KSRTC launched its first Jungle Safari trip in Wayanad from Sultan Bathery depot. Unlike the Safari offered from Mananthavady depot, the bus departs from Sultan Bathery depot only at night instead of morning hours. Even so, KSRTC earned around Rs 10 lakh in revenue from this project. The reception prompted KSRTC to launch a forest safari trip in the morning hours.

The Jungle Safari trip from Mananthavady depot starts at 5:30 am and returns by 9:30 am. The bus passes through Baveli, Thollpetty and Thirunevelli. A ticket costs Rs 300.

To book tickets from Mananthavady: 7560855189, 9446784184, 9496343835.

Know the pulse of Wayanad wilderness through KSRTC’s jungle night safari

 alt=

Who doesn’t love travelling through the wilderness of the verdant forest of Wayanad? Though you can travel through the Wayanad jungles with your friends and family members during day time without many hassles, fear sets in once it is dark as danger might lurk in the form of an elephant or a tiger. But now the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has rolled out a unique safari service on Friday that would help you to enjoy the intriguing wildlife of Wayanad at night.

The night jungle safari is the brain child of the budget tourism cell of KSRTC and the tourists can take this amazing 60km-long bus ride for Rs 300. The project is part of the earnest efforts to explore the possibilities of conducting tours during night hours in a mountainous region like Wayanad that record high tourist footfall. The night tours in Wayanad, which is replete with forest, wild animals, lakes, waterfalls and hills, are a tall order without requisite facilities.

The KSRTC night safari bus will start its journey from the Sultan Battery bus depot at 9pm and will reach Ponkuzhi on the Kerala-Karnataka border after travelling on Kozhikode-Kollengal NH 766 that cuts through the Wayanad wildlife sanctuary. The bus will touch the interior hamlets of Moolankavu, Karipur, Valluvadi and Vadakkanau, which are on the periphery of the wildlife sanctuary, while reaching Sultan Battery. After a breather, the bus will head to Irulam after passing through the Kurichyadu and Kurichayadu forest ranges in the wildlife sanctuary. The 60km safari will culminate at Sultan Battery at 11.30pm.

Two customized buses had been made ready to run the night safari services. Moreover, the tourists can stay in four AC sleeper buses, including one reserved for women travellers, stationed at the KSRTC depot. Deluxe rooms and dormitory facilities are also available for tourists who reserve tickets for the night safari. The tariff is Rs 160 and Rs 890 for a dormitory bed and a deluxe room respectively.

The night safari initiative was the dream project of Chairman and Managing Director of KSRTC Biju Prabhakar. Presently, the safari ride is available only to tourists staying in sleeper coaches and those who had travelled to Wayanad from far-off places in KSRTC buses.

Jungle Safari Through Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary in Wayanad

Jungle Safari Through Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary in Wayanad

The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, also known as Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary, is a rainforest that connects the parks of Nagarhole and Bandipur in Karnataka and Mudumalai in Tamil Nadu. It is located about 16 kilometres from Sulthan Bathery. The sanctuary, which covers an area of 345 square kilometres, is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna . Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1973 as a wildlife sanctuary in Wayanad and was brought under Project Elephant in 1991-92. It is the second-largest wildlife sanctuary in Kerala and one of the bio-geographically richest tracts of peninsular India. Semi-evergreen, moist deciduous, and dry deciduous forests can be found here.

The sanctuary, which is rich in biodiversity, is a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The management places a premium on scientific conservation while also taking into account the general way of life of the tribals and others who live in and around the forest region. The Sanctuary is home to a large number of pachyderms and has been designated as a Project Elephant site. Elephants roam freely here, and tigers are occasionally spotted. A variety of deer, monkeys, and birds can also be found here. The Reserve also has a plethora of birds, butterflies, and insects. The trees and plants in the sanctuary are typical of the moist deciduous and semi-evergreen forests of southern India. A drive along the road to Muthanga and beyond provides opportunities to observe these roaming.

Wayanad wildlife sanctuary is divided into four ranges: Sulthan Bathery, Kurichyad, Muthanga, and Tholpetty, with the Muthanga and Tholpetty ranges being the most popular with tourists visiting Wayanad. They are divided by plantations. In the Wayanad wildlife sanctuary, there are two eco-tourism centres. Eco-tourism in these locations helps to raise conservation awareness among visitors and to maintain the sanctuary and its grounds in good condition. Elephant camp visits, jeep safaris, trekking, bird watching , tribal folklore, and other eco-tourism activities are available.

Herds of elephants and gaurs are common along the trail, but seeing big cats is a rare treat. A jungle safari in Wayanad is offered in the morning and evening when animal activity in the tourism zone is at its peak.

For the jungle safari in Wayanad, you must hire jeeps at the entrance.

A guide through Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary in Wayanad

Your journey will begin in the morning. Throughout the day, Jeeps traverse the sanctuaries. The jeep can be reserved in Kalpetta, a Wayanad district town. The Muthanga sanctuary will be your first stop after that. Because it will be daytime when you arrive, you will be able to see the lush green vegetation in all its glory. Butterflies buzzing around and animals strolling down the lane will provide you with the views you've been hoping for. However, all visitors are required to remain in the tourist zone for their own safety.

It is not recommended to take photographs of the animals in the sanctuary because this may frighten them. Remember, you're in an animal's home, and you're not supposed to bother them. It is preferable to hire a guide who will provide you with all of the necessary instructions. The Kerala Forest Department organises a variety of eco-tourism activities in the Muthanga wildlife sanctuary, which will astound you. You can choose to participate in such activities and learn about environmental conservation while also having fun. These events provide a source of income for nearby villagers as well as local tour guides.

wayanad jungle safari bus

Tourists arriving in the state could now have the thrilling experience of sighting wildlife at the night affordably.

The Kerala Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has announced a ‘Wildlife night jungle safari’ through the Wayanad wildlife sanctuary as part of its latest budget tourism initiative.

The safari bus, which will enable adventure lovers to explore the busy nightlife of nocturnal animals, will be operated from the Bathery depot of the corporation.

“We will start the night jungle safari trips next week. The bus will leave Bathery depot at 9 pm and take the visitors along to Ponkuzhy on the Kerala-Karnataka border. It will ply through the Kozhikode-Kollegal NH 766 that meanders through the Wayanad wildlife sanctuary,” said Joshy John, district transport officer.

The bus will return to Bathery depot by 11.30 pm. Out of the 60-km long safari ride, 30 km will be through dense forest route. The ticket price is fixed at Rs 300 per person.

This is the first-of-its-kind initiative to tap the nighttime tourism potential of the hill district, gifted with a lush green canopy of forest, wildlife, waterfalls, lakes, and mountains.

The KSRTC, of late, has increased its focus on tourism-related activities, ranging from caravan tourism to city tour services in its attempt to revive the loss-making entity.

KSRTC’s proposal for night jungle safari through Wayanad wildlife sanctuary raises concerns

Wayanad prakrithi samrakshana samiti has filed a complaint to the secretary, ministry of environment, forest and climate change..

  • The night safari is expected to be launched by next week.
  • Environmentalists argue that it was a violation of SC order
  • They said that the proposed safari project passes through the sanctuary during banned hours.

The Kerala State Road Transport Corporation ( KSRTC ) has been on a creative spree of late by launching a series of initiatives ranging from caravan tourism to city tour services, with the sole purpose of reviving its bleeding revenue. However one such initiative seems to be backfiring. The KSRTC’s plan to launch a night jungle safari through the Wayanad wildlife sanctuary has invited ire of environmental activists in the state.

In order to tap the tourist potential of the hill district, the KSRTC was planning to introduce a jungle safari at night. As per the plan, the bus would start from Sulthan Bathery depot at 9 pm and take the Kozhikode-Kollegal National Highway via the Wayanad wildlife sanctuary. The 60 km safari will return to Sulthan Bathery. The night safari is expected to be launched by next week. Ticket price of Rs 300 will be charged per person. Of the total 60 km trip, around 30 km will be through sensitive forest area.

Wayanad Prakrithi Samrakshana Samiti, an environment organisation, has filed a complaint to the Secretary, Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) regarding the proposal, which according to them, is a violation of Supreme Court order and existing rules in Kerala. In a letter sent to MoEF, Samiti president N Badusha said that safari has been planned during the banned hours. “One of the arguments put forth by the Supreme Court to enforce the night traffic ban was the innumerable documentation of road kills of wild animals, especially between 9 PM and 6 AM. The proposed Safari Project is expected to take passengers through the Sanctuary during these banned hours,” he wrote in the letter.

It added that eco-development committees are supposed to give consent to such projects and that KSRTC could not unilaterally take decisions.

Speaking to News9, Badusha said that the disturbance caused by the night safari would increase possibilities of human-wildlife conflict in the area. He added that it would also affect eco-tourism projects, which the tribal communities in the area depend for their source of income.

“At a time, when the government is taking action against private buses for modifications, how could KSRTC do similar changes to its buses in the name of night safari?,” Badusha asked.

KSRTC managing director Biju Prabhakar was not available for comment.

Coordinates of elektrostal in degrees and decimal minutes, utm coordinates of elektrostal, geographic coordinate systems.

WGS 84 coordinate reference system is the latest revision of the World Geodetic System, which is used in mapping and navigation, including GPS satellite navigation system (the Global Positioning System).

Geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude) define a position on the Earth’s surface. Coordinates are angular units. The canonical form of latitude and longitude representation uses degrees (°), minutes (′), and seconds (″). GPS systems widely use coordinates in degrees and decimal minutes, or in decimal degrees.

Latitude varies from −90° to 90°. The latitude of the Equator is 0°; the latitude of the South Pole is −90°; the latitude of the North Pole is 90°. Positive latitude values correspond to the geographic locations north of the Equator (abbrev. N). Negative latitude values correspond to the geographic locations south of the Equator (abbrev. S).

Longitude is counted from the prime meridian ( IERS Reference Meridian for WGS 84) and varies from −180° to 180°. Positive longitude values correspond to the geographic locations east of the prime meridian (abbrev. E). Negative longitude values correspond to the geographic locations west of the prime meridian (abbrev. W).

UTM or Universal Transverse Mercator coordinate system divides the Earth’s surface into 60 longitudinal zones. The coordinates of a location within each zone are defined as a planar coordinate pair related to the intersection of the equator and the zone’s central meridian, and measured in meters.

Elevation above sea level is a measure of a geographic location’s height. We are using the global digital elevation model GTOPO30 .
