Whale watching in Gran Canaria  a unique and fantastic experience you can and should experience while visiting the Island. Joining a whale and dolphin watching tour or excursion in Gran Canaria is one of the best activities to enjoy in the island.

The Canary Islands  in general are one of the best places on the planet for whale watching. The geomorphological and oceanographic features of Gran Canaria, make it a hotspot for cetaceans. The warm and cold waters surrounding the island, and the huge amount of food available to these underwater mammals attracts them like a magnet to the area.

Don’t forget sun and lip protection (for the breeze and the sun)

If you have a tendency to get dizzy, make sure to take medication to avoid seasickness.

Make sure you wear comfortable clothes and to have something warm to put on with you because it can get chilly out on the water.

Make sure to have some sunglasses with you.

Pack a camera but hang on tight to it, because you wouldn’t be the first guest to lose your camera or phone off the side of the boat.

Selecting a tour. Things to bear in mind

Some tours are conducted on a  glass-bottom boat so you can have an easier time spotting the different dolphins and whales common to the area. Depending on the circumstances this does not help much though and some people may suffer from sea sickness

Departure port is important but also bear in mind that some tours offer pick up in areas like Playa del Ingles, Maspalomas, Meloneras, San Agustin, and Mogan,  so you don’t have to worry about getting yourself to the dock. Most boats leave from Port Rico on the southwest coast of the island. This is the best slice of coast to find dolphins and whales.

Crewin most tours are well versed in the different species that are commonly found off the coast of Gran Canaria. It is common for dolphins to jump alongside the boat which is always a treat.

Tour duration. Tours typically lasts 2- 3 hours. Longer tours also includes a stop for a swim.

Pricing of whale watching tours in Gran Canaria is affordable especially for tours with larger vessels. Special discounts for children apply sometimes

Why is whale watching in Gran Canaria so special?

Similar to  whale watching in Tenerife , whale watching in Gran Canaria is unlike whale watching anywhere else in the world.

The Canary Islands are located in an interesting little slice of the Atlantic Ocean. In this spot, the waters can reach great depths, and it is where the cold waters of the Atlantic and the warm waters of the Mediterranean sea converge. This makes the waters off the coast of the islands an excellent environment for all types of fish and plankton, in other words, whale and dolphin food. All sorts of whales and dolphins, therefore swarm around the islands looking for an easy meal.

Now, the best way to get up close with these aquatic mammals is, of course, going on a whale-watching boat trip. Simple right? Well, not so much. There are literally hundreds of different whale-watching tours available on Gran Canaria. Some are good, some are great, and others a flat-out terrible. Sifting through all these tours to find the best ones can be near impossible. But, have no fear, our local expert guides have done the leg work for you and have selected the top whale watching tour you can book on the island of Gran Canaria. Check it out!

You also get whales that come through the islands on their way to somewhere else.  Such is the case of Killer Whales or Orcas that pass through the Canary Islands on their way to the Mediterranean Sea  as they chase one of their favorite prey: Tuna.

But many of the whale species you can see near the  island of Gran Canaria  are resident, which makes sighting whales a breeze. Canary waters are among the areas with the highest whale and dolphin concentrations in Europe. So it is almost guaranteed that you will spot dolphins or whales on a boat trip in Gran Canaria.

There are several that set out from Puerto Rico every morning. Whether you are traveling with kids, other couples or seniors, a whale watching tour is a great experience for everyone.

The Whales and Dolphins of Gran Canaria

The richness of the seabed of the Canary Islands , the crystal clear water, and the warm temperatures (that average 19º C in winter and 25º C in summer), attract many marine animals. The great advantage of the archipelago compared to other places is that many of these animals live there permanently.

This means that up to thirty different species can be found in the Canary Islands, including the elusive blue whale, as well as many dolphins species. Its presence is so common that the islands have become the most important place in Europe for whale and dolphin watching .

Being able to enjoy these animals and contemplate them in total freedom in their natural habitat is a truly unforgettable experience.

These are the common species that can be found off the coast of the island.

In the Canary Islands you can observe up to six different species of these aquatic mammals, considered one of the most intelligent animals on the planet.

Seeing dolphins in the sea at dawn, from boats or even from some points on the coast, has become very common for the islanders.

Calderon or Pilot Whales

It is very common to find the largest type of dolphin (yes it is actually a dolphin despite the name) in the Canary Islands because it is where it lives permanently.

This extremely friendly animal always travels in a group or pod, interacting and playing with the other members. Their high level of sociability is the reason these animals commonly will approach boats.

This is actually a family of whales. In fact, it is the most diverse and varied family of mysticetes, including the humpback whale, one of the regular residents of the Canary Islands, which can measure up to 16 meters in length.

Due to their peculiar shape, they are easily recognizable. In addition to their beard, they have a very characteristic hump that differentiates them from other cetaceans.

Sperm Whales

The sperm whale, which can measure up to 20 meters in length, is one of the largest mammals in the world. Although in the Canary Islands it is possible to find them, their sighting is not as common because they tend to remain submerged for the majority of their life. Sperm whales can actually hold their breath for up o 90 minutes, which is one of the longest among whales. When looking for food, their dives can last 35 minutes and reach 33 kilometers in deepth.

When is the best time to go whale watching in Gran Canaria?

The short answer is that there is no best time of year in Gran Canaria to see dolphins or whales. It doesn’t matter when you go, you will always get to come in contact with these creatures. Now, if you are looking for specific types of whales, it can get trickier.

We have already talked about this in a previous article on  whale watching in Spain , but it bears repeating.

Sperm whales are a rare sight anywhere in the world but they do pop up from time to time in the Canary Islands in Spring, as they chase giant squid. Spotted dolphins can be seen from autumn to early summer and common dolphins can be found only during the winter months.

Humpback whales also visit during the summer on their way to their breeding grounds in the Cape Verde Islands. One of the most elusive species, the blue whale, has also been seen near the Islands in winter but it is one of the rarest whales to find.

Dolphin Watching Gran Canaria

The most common dolphin species in Gran Canaria are the bottlenose dolphins and the  Borneo dolphin . They all live permanently in the waters around the Canary archipelago and in large groups.

These lively and highly intelligent critters are generally open-minded and quite sociable. Therefore, it is not uncommon for them to approach boats and interact with visitors.

They absolutely love surfing the bow wave, showing off with jumps and other acrobatic maneuvers, you can even hear them calling to one another if you listen closely.

Barco azul boats for whale watching in Gran Canaria

If you set out on a dolphin tour from Puerto Rico  look for the boats that carry the seal “Barco Azul”, in English “Blue Boat” . This means that the operator has the appropriate license to perform the whales and dolphins search trips and that he adheres strictly to the legal provisions to ensure the protection of these marine mammals in Canary waters.

The set rules imply, among other things, that the boats can only approach the animals at a certain distance and can neither distress nor persecute them.

Approach and interaction can only happen if they are initiated by the animals themselves. It is also strictly forbidden to feed them, nor are you allowed to swim with them.

These rules are in place to ensure that these marine animals can move freely in their own habitat and live in absolute freedom.

During the excursion, the crew will inform you of the different species of cetaceans that are seen and of the features and particularities of each one of them.

  • Elcaballoviajero 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Absolutely incredible The captain and his family are an incredible group who will show you one of the best experiences possible on the island. The beach is actually one big beach during low tide, but in the winter it's high tide and the natural geography of it causes it to split into two separate beaches. We got to go to the one beach that was private and spend some time there. The water was a little cold (it is winter after all) but once you get past those first 4-5 seconds you'll be golden. There's food and drink provided on this trip as well, and the captain and his family will explain everything of interest that you see from the ship on your way there (maybe you'll get to dolphin watch, maybe you'll see a whale, maybe you'll learn about the floatation devices used by ships to alert other ships that passengers have fallen overboard). Overall, best thing we did on our time here in Gran Canaria. Worth every penny. Please note (this is not a complaint, just a warning): you WILL have to swim from the boat to the shore (no matter what your booking agency tells you), and you will understand why when you get there. Do not dress in clothes that you aren't comfortable getting wet. I was told it was possible to take a small boat to the shore, so my family members dressed nicely as they weren't expecting to have to swim, and they ended up waiting on the boat for 2 hours, which was nice in itself but they missed out. They also forced the captain to have to stay on board, which he didn't have to do for us. I went, and had a fantastic time. Wear the appropriate attire and you will also have a fantastic time. • 151trishb 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles MAGIC - DOLPHIN WATCHING & THE BEACH OF GUI GUI Great trip, the boat was speedy and took us out to the location where we could see dolphins. The crew were a family team, mum dad and son who kept you informed all the way of what to look out for and various landmarks along the way in numerous languages. We saw numerous dolphins coming close to the boat, it was lovely to see them in the natural environment, we saw flying fish. We headed off to Gui gui beach and stopped just outside the bay so we could all jump in and swim to the beach. Not an excursion for non swimmers. There was plenty of time at the beach to relax swim and we were provided with a plentiful lunch as well and drinks. Coke, water and lager. You wouldn’t go hungry. Really enjoyable day with lovely crew would recommend this trip. Read more Written October 5, 2019
  • Teresa R 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful crew, flying fishes and lots of dolphins My 8 year old son and I had a wonderful trip with the Taxiboat, 2.5 h. The weather was lovely as it normally is here, we saw six flying fishes on our way out to search for dolphins, and this was amazing, as he has never seen this before. Further out we saw plenty of dolphins swimming around the boat and in front of the boat. One dolphin even showed off a bit, jumping sideways right next to our seats, which my son talked about the reason of the day. The crew, Helena and Aurelio, was impeccable and knew exactly what they were doing, and also respected the dolphins, by not being to close to them, but give them their space. These two wonderful crew both speak good English, Helena also speak German. We do recommend this trip❤️❤️❤️ Read more Written September 20, 2019
  • Alek_Hojnik 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles The search for dolphins We were an half hour late to depart from the dock as we waited for a few individuals that decided to come late. The older guy that took us on-board spoke mostly spanish, but managed to throw us a couple of sentences in english. The first hour out on the sea we mostly sailed through the waves searching for the dolphins. Then we joined another boat that found a group of up to ten dolphins. Luckily there was one member of the crew on the boat who spoke english and gave us some information. We stayed there observing the dolphins for maybe half an hour and then departed for gui-gui. As we arrived to the beach the crew said that there was bad weather and we couldn't get off the boat. At the same time there were other ships near the beach and people getting on the shore. We stayed on board for some time, then headed to another smaller beach. When we arrived we were served lunch and offered to take a swim. We were back to the dock an half hour early as there were people sea sick and vomiting. I wish I could give a better review as the crew was friendly, but we didn't get the experince promissed and for the trip we had, the full price we paid was to high. If you can't deliver the experience promissed 'no matter the circumstances', you cannot offer it to the customer and cannot charge for it in full. Read more Written September 5, 2019
  • lilybethp100 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great opportunity to see dolphins in their natural environment We had a great time on this tour and would thoroughly recommend. The amount of dolphins you will see is incredible - I was expecting maybe one or two but there were hundreds and they really seem to enjoy swimming along with the boat. On the way back there is also the opportunity to get off the boat and swim in the Gui Gui bay. You can also add-on a transfer from your hotel which for €5 each return was a no brainer! Would definitely recommend as something different to do while you are on the island. Read more Written June 8, 2019

Our boat stayed with them and we got really close without disturbing them. No whales tho. But enjoyed it. The trip was 2.5 hours, others were offering 4 hours but in the heat and not a fan of boats we chose the taxi boat. It was definitely the right decision, waa happy to get back to land after seeing the dolpins, they still did the little swimming excursion to a beautiful little part of the ocean close in, we wasnt prepared for it, but it looked lovely. • 23Caznick24 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Beware!!!!!! We booked the 3.5 hour trip for the afternoon this is the dolphin and gui gui beach trip, my 9 year old son was really excited about the whole trip and had been asking to go for the first few days of our holiday, so we booked it at the desk at harbour. We paid 108 euros for 3 of us. As we boarded the boat we were given the safety talk then as the captain got on he told everyone he would try getting to the beach but it was quite choppy and windy......I should of asked then, what happens if we don't get the full trip that we paid for, however we were all looking forward to it so much I didn't think unfortunately. Long story short we were out 1 hour then told the sea was to choppy to continue and we were heading back to the harbour and we would need to sort something with 'the boy' on returning to harbour. We did't see any marine life at all, which to be fair can happen. On our return all travellers were told they would get a ticket for the next day and under no circumstances would they even offer a partial refund (which I would of been happy with), some people were going home the next day and were unable to take on the free trip. Now I feel that before we even left the harbour these people knew for a fact we would NOT manage the full trip as sailors know the sea very well, for obvious reasons. We holiday in Puerto Rico a few times a year and we will never return to this trip, if we had been offered a partial refund and an apology then we most certainly would of returned. Just beware when parting with your hard earned cash that if trip is cut short you will not receive anything back other than sarcasm and a free ticket!!!! Read more Written November 22, 2018

The crew stopped the boat to allow for pictures and videos. They even turned the boat around for a lady who was unable to stand from her seat so that she could get good pictures. Before leaving they made sure everyone got the photos/videos they wanted. Refreshments were given out for no extra cost and a stop near the beach was made for those who wanted to swim for a while. The crew were extremely friendly and charismatic, and spoke great English for those of us who didn’t know Spanish. For anyone considering this trip, I would definitely recommend it as it is worth the money. Read more Written September 13, 2018

Unfortunately the night before we went there were heavy storms and when we got to harbour we thought we may not go out due to the poor weather. However, we were all ready to go and it was decided we'd go an see if we could get out there! It was a little rough and we thought we were not going to be lucky at spotting anything. With it being a little rough we didn't get to see the full power of the boat, but we did get to see some dolphins playing with us and flying fish. We all got a drink too, coke, water or beer 😊 We went with our 2 children (4 & 7) they were so excited seeing dolphins. Thanks for a great trip even without the sun shining!
