Where to go on safari

Authentic off-the-beaten-track safaris

           Luxury

If you are looking for a luxurious high-quality bush experience, then there are options in all countries, but most notably in Botswana, Tanzania, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Kenya.

           Earthy

For a more earthy and intimate experience, with a greater focus on high quality guiding and walking safari, there are good options in Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

          Overland

For private-guided overland safaris, which offer a broader African experience, but which are slightly more arduous, the Serengeti region of Tanzania is the place.

          Lower cost

If you need to find the best lower cost options, then you should probably start in South Africa and Zimbabwe.

            Self-drive

For self-drive safari options, Namibia is the stand-out country, with further options in South Africa.

          Primates

If you are interested in gorillas and chimps, then you need to lookk at Rwanda, Uganda and Congo.

            8 to 14 nights

Most of our guests tend to deploy 8 to 14 nights in Africa, of which anything from 3 to 13 nights are spend actually on safari. Combining with other locations like tropical beaches, rural areas, Victoria Falls and Cape Town can add variety into a trip and help to keep a lid on costs.

           12 to 21 nights

Longer trips of 12 to 21 nights tend to include 9-20 nights on safari, usually split across two to five different areas, sometimes in two or more countries. Longer explorations of non-safari areas such as the Western Cape (Cape Town, Whale Coast, Cape Winelands) also become possible and are incredibly good value.

             21 to 50 nights

We absolutely love putting together even trips of 21 to 50 nights , or even longer. Sometimes we are lucky enough to work with guests who are taking a sabbatical from work or who are retired and just love to travel. In these trips, the possibilities become almost infinite and can include a half dozen or more countries.

Safaris in Africa range from relatively pricey to eye-wateringly expensive. For the core safari nights in a trip, you can expect to spend USD 500 to 3500 per person per night. We are more than happy to work across this range of prices. The only important thing is that we help you find the very best safari to suit your budget. The two dominant price factors are the specific lodges that you choose to include in your trip and how many people you are bringing (solo safari can be impractically expensive, whilst the economies of scale are usually reached at around 4-6 guests). If you have a higher budget , we will help you determine which camps do actually deliver elevated levels of service and experience. We will also highlight other subtle ways in which your trip can be raised to another level, including the use of whole camp bookings, private guides and vehicles, helicopter explorations of remote areas etc. If you have a medium budget , the best ways to keep a lid on costs are to travel out of the Jul-Oct dry season and to carefully choose lower-priced lodges.  You can also reduce the number of core safari nights and deploy time in more cost-effective beach, town and rural locations. We will help you understand where to trim and where to splash in order to achieve the best overall experience. If you have a lower budget , then talk to us about last-minute booking options, which can deliver some extraordinary discounts. Failing that, we can always look at other fundamentally less pricey safari countries.

How much to spend in Africa

Tropical beaches

If you want to include tropical beaches with your safari, the most convenient locations are Kenya, Tanzania and the Kruger area of South Africa. Other safari areas and more remote Indian Ocean islands can be combined, but the connections are more sticky.

Popular combos locations

Primate areas

If you also want to go trekking in the tropical forests in search of gorillas and chimpanzees, then you need to head to Rwanda or Uganda, which combine most easily with the Serengeti region of Tanzania for savanna safari.

Rural locations

Some safari locations are located near attractive rural areas, where stylish lodges offer a chance to relax and undertake a whole other range of more culturally-focused activities. The Serengeti region of Tanzania is particularly strong in this respect.

Africa has around 2300 safari lodges. We are able to include any of these properties in your trip. We ones most like to recommend fall into two categories … Firstly, there are the truly high-end lodges , which are in the very best locations and offer the highest levels of guiding, hospitality and consistency, suitable for demanding guests. Secondly, there are the relatively good value camps , which are also in excellent locations and also take their guiding very seriously, but which typically offer lower levels of luxury and have the potential to be slightly less consistent in their delivery, suitable for more easy-going guests. The properties that we generally prefer to avoid in Africa are the large sausage-factory-type places, which deliver nasty low-quality safari experiences to guests who appear to be on a very different agenda. We also need to avoid very simple lodges, where the experience can be too unreliable for us to recommend. You can always expect absolute honesty from us when describing the various lodges and camps. Our primary motivation is to figure out which ones will suit you the best.

The best safari lodges in Africa

There are nine main safari countries in Africa, which vary enormously in terms of landscapes, climates, wildlife, safari styles, visitor facilities and visitor numbers. Deciding the best countries to include in your trip is a fundamentally important issue.

When to go on safari in Africa

The various safari  areas of Africa are not only very seasonal, but even in the same month conditions can vary enormously from place to place. Careful planning is extremely important. The high level view goes something like this … May-Sep is the main dry season in most safari locations, with dry and sunny conditions, prolific wildlife viewing, high season prices and relatively high visitor traffic. Oct-Nov is a transition period in most areas, with mixed weather conditions, slightly reduced wildlife sightings, reduced prices and relatively low visitor traffic. Dec-Jan is usually good in most of East Africa, but hot and rainy in much of Southern Africa, with high season prices and high visitor traffic for the middle two weeks. Feb-Apr is generally rainy and adverse, but with major exceptions including the migration calving season in the Serengeti area of Tanzania and great low season prices in Botswana. Visitor traffic is generally quite low.

The year that we started to build great safaris

Start planning your Africa safari today

Recommended and endorsed by all the leading lodge owners in Africa

           True wilderness

Some safari areas are enormous wildernesses, whilst others are small fenced reserves. You will have to decide for yourself how important that is to your enjoyment.

           Private or public

Many of the best safari areas in Africa are private conservancies, where visitor numbers are very low and there should be no risk of vehicle traffic.

           Seasonality

It is critical that a safari be perfectly tuned to the seasonal patterns of weather, wildlife and visitor traffic. You can rely on us to be particularly obsessive about this issue.

           Small lodges

Most of the very best safari lodges have less than ten rooms, some less than five. When a lodge exceeds twenty rooms, alarm bells should really start to sound.

           Safari guiding

The quality of the safari guiding is critical your trip. A bad guide can drive past all the animals, a great guide can make an empty landscape entertaining.

          Ethos

The best safari operations are run by people who have dedicated their lives to conservation. If an operation feels to commercial, then you’ve taken a wrong turn.

Popular types of safari

Honeymoon safaris

There is no better and no more romantic honeymoon than a safari honeymoon. We have been helping guests to build awesome honeymoons for many years. We very much understand the importance of such a trip. We know that it needs to really reach the heights and to be a truly life-punctuating experience.

Family safaris

An African safari should be one of the most wonderful things that your family will ever do, on so many levels. The deep sense of adventure, coupled with a wide range of unforgettable experiences, enriches the memory bank like no other type of trip. Our experts have a great deal of experience of creating truly remarkable family safaris for a very wide range of tastes and budgets.

Luxury safaris

If your dream safari involves beautifully designed lodges, wonderful food and elegant service, then there’s a very wide range of lodges in Africa from which to choose. Usually, higher levels of luxury also imply higher prices, but this is not necessarily the case. There are some very well-priced options in parts of South Africa in particular.

Adventure safaris

If you are more focused on the intensity of the experience, then that’s no problem. We can dial up the heat on a safari as high as you wish. Most commonly this means simpler stripped-down camps and raw experiences such as approaching lions and elephants on foot. Some of our safari experts are particularly experienced in this kind of thing. They delight in putting together trips that go far beyond the usual envelope.

Victoria Falls

The Victoria Falls are very conveniently combined with the safari areas of Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe.  There are even direct flight connections with the Kruger area of South Africa.

Cape Town, the Whale Coast and the Cape Winelands are extremely beautiful and ridiculously good value. Adding them to a safari can really help keep a lid on the total cost of a trip.

Madagascar is a vast place that really needs a bare minimum of ten nights to even scrape the surface. It therefore tends to be combined with safari on the mainland in trips of three or more weeks.

What makes a good safari in Africa

There are certain key traits which betray the quality of a safari. Here are a few things to look out for when making your deliberations …

Tanzania – Africa Travel Resource Review

Mweta and Greg

That’s Mweta and Greg in the picture above.

Africa Travel Resource (ATR), a UK company, arranged our safari trip with Tanganyika Expeditions (also known as MKSC, the Mount Kilimanjaro Safari Club).  ATR’s web site provided an awesome amount of information, which included many pictures of the camps and tents/rooms, as well as maps, seasonal prices and availability.

I feel it is good to give one’s business where one has benefited most.  The website, combined with excellent reviews, made my decision easy.

ATR provided an extremely detailed trip itinerary.  It included descriptions of national parks and animals we would hopefully see, miles traveled, vehicles chosen, and most importantly, the price of each item.  It was easy to choose between an all-land adventure, or a land-air adventure.  We chose the all-land because I figured that we would be more likely to see animals, people and life on the ground than in the air.  It didn’t take very many email exchanges to arrive at our final itinerary.

Tanganyika Expeditions, ATR’s partner in Tanzania, and our excellent guide Mweta, were not to be surpassed.   Their website showed us the vehicle we would be riding in.  A seasoned guide, Mweta was incomparable, knowledgeable, comfortable to travel with, and a lot of fun as well.

Run into trouble on your trip? You're on your own. Express issues with the travel agent? They will blame you. What did we pay them for? Once you book they wipe their hands of you. Not worth the money. Look elsewhere or just book directly with Asilia Camps and Baraza Resort if you're considering Tanzania.

I just contacted ATR & inquired about Mafia Island.

I'm including my correspondce with them today.

I will let you decide whether their answers or lack of

reflected their competence. It seemed more like a cooky

cutter answer.

I'm a retired travel agent so I tend to be sceptical.

Since you are from the UK and I from the USA how reliable

tour companies are depends on their track record.

Here in the US we have an association that most travel agencies and tour companies belong to.

The most important thing is to make sure if you have to pay in advance that it goes into an escrow fund.

for your honeymoon. Just a thought.

Thanks for your email and it's a pleasure to hear from you.

Chole Mjiini is one of my favourite places in Tanzania , it is more than a lodge as it is so unique and off the beaten track that it would be difficult to find anywhere else in Africa as cool. This is a perfect place to visit either after time spent relaxing on Zanzibar or perhaps after time out on safari.

The Chole Bay is a marine park so whether you like to dive or just take it easy and snorkel, there is an excellent mix or both.

In getting to Mafia there are daily flights from Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, the Selous and Arusha which fly down mid afternoon and return early evening.

The best time of year to travel are the following months : January, February, July, August, September, October.

Chole : http://www.africatravelresource.com/sc/t/tchoa.htm

Also it's definitely easier to travel down from the UK and fly into Dar Es Salaam .

If you do plan a trip just let me know.

Subject: Mafia Island

Stumbled upon ATR web site.

I am not much for crowds or laying on the beach, so the little island of Mafia and Chole bay

sounded very insteresting.

I enjoy walking, sailing and snorkeling. Pole Pole lodge sounds more my style

then the treehouse accomodations of Chole Mjini Lodge.

The creators Jean and Anne de Villiers sound familiar. Where they ever in National Geographic?

I live on the east coast of the USA but also travel to Latvia where I was born.

Can you recommend reading material in reference to language, flora, fauna and best time

Would it be easier to travel from USA, England or Latvia?

Two other sets of friends have also used them and found the same.

Have a nice honeymoon. Zanzibar is amazing.

----------------------------

They were wonderful -- the trip of a lifetime! All of us agreed: it could not have been any better. (And just to let you know, we are all world class travelers and all of had been to Africa before.. so this is high praise, indeed!)

We had an incredible, knowledgeable guide, Lahaya, who never grew tired of answering every question about every animal you could imagine(and believe me, I can be insufferable! too, too curious, I fear..) We stayed at two of the four places you mentioned: Olduvai and the Ronjo Flycamp. Everything was so well thought through. This was not like staying in a hotels or luxurious accommodations, which could really be anywhere. The camps were comfortable, charming and contributed to the whole experience of what a true safari should be. They were perfectly situated, right in the middle of where you would want to be. At Olduvai, we went for the walk with Masai, watching the sunset.. We sang along with them their evening song as we watched the giraffes parade in the distance. At Ronjo, we could hear the lionesses and zebra in the distance. When we woke, we watched what looked like an endless train of wildebeeste crossing the sergenetti plain as the sun rose. Somehow, all the sounds were very comforting.. that's when you know you have become part of it.. you truly feel one with your surroundings.. ...

I would definitely take another trip with ATR, with no hesitation.

I am also contemplating booking a safari through ATR. They have proposed an itinerary for a 6 day safari which looks very good. My only question is, did you manage to see the Big 5 up close or were they just sounds in the distance. Impressed with their help so far. Just want to make sure I will get the most out of the trip as it will be part of our honeymoon. They have recommended the Olduvai Camp and Ronjo Camp. Is 6 days enough or would you recommend longer?

Here is a sample trip...

If you fly with KLM I suggest that you fly into KILIMANJARO International

Airport. We can pick you up and then I suggest that you spend your first night

in Arusha, at the Moivaro Lodge.

Here's the link ...

Moivaro : http://www.africatravelresource.com/sc/t/tmoia.htm

Day 2 : Karatu : Gibbs Farm

Today you will meet your driver guide and make your way up the rift valley

escarpment to the Karatu area which will bring you closer to the Ngorongoor

Crater for the next day but avoid spending the night on the rim. I suggest that

you visit Manyara National Park on your way up to Gibbs Farm. Manyara is a

beautiful park, it does not have as much game as the other parks but it a good

park to start with and a great introduction to the northern parks. Gibbs Farm

is a lovely farm set in the foothills of the Ngorongoro Crater . Gibbs is totally

different from anywhere else that you will stay. I think that it gives a nice

break from the normal safari lodges and tented camps. It is set in beautiful

grounds. You can choose to go walking in this area possibly up to the waterfalls

and elephant caves or hire mountain bikes for the afternoon or simply relaxing

in the beautiful gardens. The food is all home grown and very good. Here is the

Gibbs Farm : http://www.africatravelresource.com/sc/t/tgfma.htm

Day 3: Serengeti : Olduvai Camp

Today you head up to the Ngorongoro Crater. This is one of the undisputed

wonders of the world. Its 22km caldera is a microcosm of East Africa and must be

the only place where you can virtually guarantee great game-viewing every day of

the year. The crater is, of course, a hotspot for safari traffic, so don't

expect to have the place to yourself (although if you are first down in the

morning you can often be virtually alone in the crater for hours). For

accommodation in the immediate crater area, apart from Crater Lodge the

accommodation is disgracefully poor for the location and this is why we suggest

spending the day on the Crater floor before heading down to the southern

Serengeti for a stay at Olduvai Camp.

Olduvai Camp is somewhere that shouldn't be missed. It's location in the middle

of the short grass plains means that you are off the beaten track. In December

the game and wildebeest migration should be massing around this area and the

central plains so it will be swarming with game. Whilst at Olduvai you can also

go walking with our Masai guides. One walk I recommend is up to Sunset rock.

Take a couple of drinks, walk with our guides for 30mins up to the rock and

watch the sunset over the plains. It really is fantastic. It is a great way to

learn about the area, truly fascinating and not touristy at all. They are

genuine guys who have lived and worked in the area all their lives.

Olduvai Camp : http://www.africatravelresource.com/sc/t/tolda.htm

Day 4 & 5 : Central Serengeti : Ronjo Camp

After a night at Olduvai I have suggested heading up into the Central Serengeti

and spend a nights camping. The accommodation in the area is very poor which is

why we suggest spending a couple of nights out in the bush. We have our own

private campsite, where camp is already set up prior to your arrival.

Accommodation is in walk in tents with camp beds and a shower and toilet

connected at the side. It is basic but comfortable and much mroe comfortable

then normal camping. You will have campstaff to look after you with three course

meals under a mess tent and a camp fire to sit around. Ronjo is a fantastic

place and one of the most genuine forms of safari. If you want to be in the

middle of it all then this is the place to be. However, do not expect luxury.

TRON : Ronjo Flycamp : http://www.africatravelresource.com/sc/t/trona.htm

Day 6 : Southern Serengeti : Olduvai Camp

Today I suggest you game drive back to Olduvai. Perhaps in time for another walk

with the Masai or possibly to visit Olduvai Museum or shifting sands.

I'm kind of new to the whole safari thing, but have learned a lot.

I currently have a proposed itinerary from ATR as well. I am very impressed with it as well as the price they are asking. (it's on the high end of my personal budget, but for what they are offering - luxury tents- the price is very reasonable if not excellent. ) There are some reviews at the Fodors.com East Africa forum. They have a search engine as well. Some great, some not so great, but none were "bad" IMO.

hope this helps a little.

Flooz... Several things: 1) you didn't say when you would be going, and that makes a lot of difference on where to go, especially in the Serengeti.

2) You want to get up close and personal, you should be close enough to the animals to smell them (is that close enough?). I've had lions lie down beside my vehicle; elephants walk past so close that they almost rubbed the vehicle, etc.

3) you should start your own thread and you'll get better responses to your questions. Just tap on the Start a New Post rather then Reply.
