The Reggae legends will bring all the hits - including ‘Cherry Oh Baby’, ‘Many Rivers to Cross’, ‘Please Don’t Make Me Cry’, and ‘Red Red Wine’ - to arenas across the UK, kicking off on April 6 in Liverpool, before going on to Glasgow, Leeds, London’s The O2, Birmingham, Cardiff, and wrapping Nottingham on April 16.

For all dates, excluding Glasgow, collaborator and peer Bitty McLean will open for the 'Kingston Town' hitmakers.

The tour comes after Astro - whose real name was Terence Oswald Wilson - passed away in November 2021 at the age of 64 after a "very short illness". He played percussion and trumpet and sang and rapped in UB40.

Speaking before playing a Hampton Court Palace Festival show last summer, Ali admitted it would be hard for him to get back on stage without his long-time friend with him.

He said: "It’s going to be incredibly difficult without Astro by my side. But, remembering Astro, let the music play on."

Tickets for UB40 featuring Ali Campbell’s 'The Hits Tour' 2024 are on sale on Friday (08.09.23) at 10am, and will be available from MyTicket.co.uk.

29 bands named after real people:.

Rock legends Pink Floyd took their moniker from the given names of two Piedmont blues artists that Syd Barrett had in his record collection, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council.

Lynyrd Skynyrd

Southern rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd are named after high school gym teacher Leonard Skinner who taught Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, and Bob Burns at Robert E. Lee High School in Florida in the 1960s. Skinner was reportedly notorious for enforcing the school's policy against boys having long hair, and the Lynyrd Skynyrd band name was seen as an act of rebellion against him.

The Yardbirds

The influential British band's name was partially inspired by the nickname of American jazz saxophonist Charlie 'Yardbird' Parker. It's also the name given to rail yard hobos in Jack Kerouac's 1957 novel On the Road.

New York punk trailblazers Ramones were named by Dee Dee Ramone (Douglas Glenn Colvin) after Paul McCartney's briefly adopted pseudonym Paul Ramon in his Silver Beetles days in 1960.

The Hollies

The Hollies' co-founder Graham Nash revealed in a 2009 interview that they coined their band just moments before they were due to step on stage at the Oasis Club in Manchester in December 1962. The name comes from their admiration for Buddy Holly.

The Hollies - Buddy Holly

Rock legend Buddy Holly in the late 1950s who inspired The Hollies band name. He died aged just 22 in the 3rd February 1959 plane crash that also claimed the lives of Ritchie Valens, "The Big Bopper" J. P. Richardson and their pilot Roger Peterson. It was later known as 'The Day the Music Died.'

Previously called City Kidd, the Sacramento rockers renamed themselves Tesla in homage to inventor and electrical engineer Nikola Tesla during the recording of their debut album 'Mechanical Resonance' in 1986. Some of the band's song and album titles nod towards Nikola Tesla too.

Tesla - Nikola Tesla

Jethro Tull

With Ian Anderson struggling to settle on a name for his band in the late 1960s (names included Navy Blue, Ian Henderson's Bag o' Nails, and Candy Coloured Rain), a member of the band's booking agent's staff christened them Jethro Tull after the 18th-century agriculturist.

Jethro Tull, who helped to bring about the British Agricultural Revolution of the 18th century. He perfected a horse-drawn seed drill in 1701 that economically sowed the seeds in neat rows, and later developed a horse-drawn hoe. What a guy!

Creedence Clearwater Revival

In 1967 the band toyed with renaming themselves Muddy Rabbit, Gossamer Wump, and Creedence Nuball and the Ruby, however they settled on Creedence Clearwater Revival with the 'Creedence' a nod towards guitarist Tom Fogerty's friend Credence Newball.

Crazy Horse

Formerly known as The Rockets, the American band became known as Crazy Horse in 1969 when they first teamed up with Neil Young. The band was named after the 19th Century Sioux Tribe leader Crazy Horse.

Billy Gibbons took direct inspiration from blues artists BB King and ZZ Hill as he liked the way the initials sounded in their stage names. He was initially going to call his band ZZ King but became concerned it sounded to similar to the original artist. Gibbons ultimately settled on ZZ Top as he remarked the "king is at the top."

Greta Van Fleet

The retrogressive rockers are named after a bluegrass musician called Gretna VanFleet, who hails from their home town of Frankenmuth, Michigan. Although Greta Van Fleet didn't initially ask her for permission, the 93-year-old subsequently gave them her blessing.

Molly Hatchet

Just like their fellow Jacksonville rockers Lynyrd Skynyrd, Molly Hatchet were named after a real person. Molly Hatchet's moniker is more steeped in history, however, as they're named after an infamous 17th-century axe murderess dubbed 'hatchet molly'.

Leicester indie rockers Kasabian take their name from Linda Kasabian who was a member of Charles Manson's cult, the Manson Family, in the late 1960s and 1970s. Linda Kasabian was present at both the Tate and LaBianca murders committed by the cult in 1969, but received immunity for her testimony as a key witness in the trial of Manson.

Mookie Blaylock (Pearl Jam)

Dead Kennedys

The politicised punk rockers' somewhat controversial name references the deceased members of the Kennedy family, including the assassinated President John F. Kennedy. Guitarist East Bay Ray said they weren't trying to insult the Kennedys. "The assassinations were in much more poor taste than our band," he argued. "We actually respect the Kennedy family. When JFK was assassinated, when Martin Luther King was assassinated, when RFK was assassinated, the American Dream was assassinated. Our name is actually homage to the American Dream."

Dead Kennedys - John F Kennedy

Kings of Leon

The Brian Jonestown Massacre

Founder and leader Anton Newcombe named his band after late-great Rolling Stones founder Brian Jones and the 1978 Jonestown Massacre.

Jimmy Eat World

He explained in 1999: "My brother Jim beat up my younger brother Ed, and Jim ran into his room and locked his door, and Ed drew this picture that said 'Jimmy Eat World', and it was a picture of him eating the world. My brother Jim is kind of a big guy. A stupid name."

The Dandy Warhols

The Oregon alt-rockers' name is a play on the name of revered American pop artist Andy Warhol.

The Dandy Warhols - Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol (1928-1987) was an artist and experimental filmmaker and one of the founders of the Pop Art movement.

Melvins are named after a man called Melvin who was frontman Buzz Osborne's supervisor when he worked at a supermarket in Montesano, Washington. The real Melvin was widely disliked by staff and Osborne thought it would be a gloriously ridiculous name for his band.

James Gang are named after the 19th-century gang of American outlaws led by Jesse James. The band's final album 'Jesse Comes Home' references Jesse James and the artwork features a painting of the folk hero riding off into the sunset.

James Gang - Jesse James

Hootie and the Blowfish

The Marshall Tucker Band

Here's the moment

This is when humble Mark Williams lifted the Tour Championship trophy.

He was serenaded in confetti, as he held back the tears.

Job well done, Mark.

ali campbell tour 2024 uk

Family affair

For Williams it was a family affair at the Tour Championships.

Afterwards, he was joined by his wife and their three sons to pose with the trophy.

ali campbell tour 2024 uk

Williams is the victor

It's Williams' 26th ranking title.

This will certainly put him in people's thoughts at the Crucible.

ali campbell tour 2024 uk

The form guide

Williams must have feared a ninth successive loss against the Rocket today.

It goes all the way back to 2016, and he was 5-3 down in this Tour Championship final.

However, the Welshman saw it differently.

Winning seven consecutive frames, he saw off O'Sullivan. Astonishing stuff.

'He likes to play golf and chill out, enjoy his life'

Ronnie O'Sullivan joked that Mark Williams would be No1 in the world, if he didn't prefer to 'chill out' and 'play golf'.

"If he was to dedicate his whole life to it, he would probably be number one in the world," he said.

"But he doesn’t – he likes to play golf and chill out, enjoy his life.

"He doesn’t do badly for someone that just plays about it in the sport."

O'Sullivan's modest in defeat

Listen, I think Mark has been the most consistent player for the last five years. “The way he has been hitting the ball. Very rarely does he play a poor match. “The way he has played this week and in the final, he’s such an amazing player. He’s so talented. “I think he’s better now than he has ever been to be honest with you. He seems so strong. “I tried, I gave it everything, but he’s so consistent, so strong. “If you don’t keep playing top-level snooker against him, he’ll just eat you alive. I think I did well to get five frames.” Ronnie O'Sullivan ITV Sport

More Williams reaction

Not bad. I played well all day. I took it to him, I played well. I cannot believe I won. “It’s not bad for a part-timer. I am a part-timer pool player now! “I never thought I would win tournaments at the age of 49. Who knows, the world championships are round the corner? I will try my best. “This is up there in my career. As Ronnie said, I think I am a better all-round player now. Considering I don’t practice that much. But I always try my absolute nuts. “I have beaten the best three players in the world. I haven’t done it the easy way. “It’s nice to have family up here. One son always comes with me. Two of my sons only come up to watch Ronnie. “The crowd have been fantastic. They have given everybody great support.” Mark Williams ITV Sport

Frame-by-frame

ali campbell tour 2024 uk

Williams reaction

"I can't believe I won. "Who knows the world championship is around the corner, he's the man to beat and I'll try my best. "I think I'm better all round than I've ever been. I've beat Judd Trump, Mark Allen and Ronnie O'Sullivan the best three players in the world. Mark Williams ITV Sport

O'Sullivan praises Williams

Incredibly, this is O'Sullivan's first final loss in five years.

But, he was quick to take his hat off to his opponent.

He said: "I think he's better now than he's ever been," O'Sullivan said.

"I think he's been the best player for the last five years."

Williams is the Tour Championship winner

What a remarkable performance from Williams.

He was in unbeatable form today, and O'Sullivan just couldn't keep up with his opponent.

The Welshman is the Tour Championship winner.

O'Sullivan 5-10 Williams

With Williams on 40, he misses a red.

But an out of sync O'Sullivan misses a pot he would usually make.

It's catching. Williams then misses with the rest, with Rocket returning to the table.

O'Sullivan's short on a red! Williams returns and makes no mistake. But guess what? An easy pot hits both sides of the bottom left cushion and bounces out.

What a frame. O'Sullivan then gives Williams the opportunity to plant a double - which he does.

A missed yellow from O'Sullivan is then sunk by Williams. It's all over.

O'Sullivan 5-9 Williams

One frame now from glory.

It has been quite the exceptional performance from Williams.

He is reborn.

O'Sullivan 5-8 Williams

Well, well, well.

O'Sullivan's game has gone to pot here. A routine red missed, Williams capitalised.

Earlier in the frame, Williams played a brilliant double - showing off, perhaps, his pool skills.

Another century break gives him a big extension of his lead.

And we're back on

After the evening interval, we're back under way.

Williams blitzed that last session.

Best of 19 frames, it means Williams is just three frames away from glory.

O'Sullivan 5-7 Williams

Williams was in danger of losing the frame very early on when he was told by the ref another miss would see him concede.

But, he managed to find a way out of trouble and a series of safety's followed.

Williams seemed to take the initiative when Ronnie left a long red open, which he potted - but he couldn't quite get a run going.

Another mistake from Ronnie gifted Williams the frame with a break of 99.

O'Sullivan 5-6 Williams

Williams has stole another frame.

Rocket run up a score of 42, but the Welshman got to 60, before missing the pink.

Ronnie needed a snooker, and tried to force the issue until Williams finally sunk the pink.

Williams is playing with such poise and calmness out there.

O'Sullivan 5-5 Williams

This is superb from Williams.

He's shown determination and amazing character to fight back and level the scores up.

We're in for an epic night, clearly.

A break of 104 - with Ronnie failing to pot a ball - seals the 10th frame.

O'Sullivan 5-4 Williams

Williams stops O'Sullivan's run after the interval to go within one.

A brilliant shot to the middle pocket on a red that appeared to be blocked by the pink was dealt with beautifully with a bit of swerve.

It was a tight frame, but the Welshman got over the line and is back in it.

Williams' plan of attack

I'm just going to enjoy it. "How many more times is this going to happen? "I couldn't pick a better player to play in a final. I'm going to attack and try my best. "I know I haven't played Ronnie in a final for a long time but that's because he keeps beating me before the final!" Mark Williams ITV Sport

Ronnie's mental health battle

Ronnie O'Sullivan has been candid about his mental health battle, revealing he has seen a psychiatrist during the Tour Championship.

He told ITV: "I've just got to commit to it [speaking to a psychiatrist] now for a good year to try to get myself out of this sort of hole I've got myself in mentally with the obsession of the game, tinkering.

"I know I'm never going to stop tinkering, but I have to somehow get my head strong enough to be able to deal with it and not go too deep into that horrible murky world that it is.

"Every sportsman - maybe golfers, tennis players, snooker players - I suppose we all do it, but I went so deep into that it's like detoxing myself from it.

"It kind of felt like I've had the yips in a way - mentally, physically - it feels like you get scared to even want to go and play.

"That's not a nice place to be, so I've got nothing left to do other than to try to get myself mentally out of it and hopefully my game will start to flow again, maybe."

Pre-match meal

Mark Williams showed his fans he was just like Luke Littler by tucking into a kebab before his match-up with Ronnie O'Sullivan.

The family meal clearly went down well.

ali campbell tour 2024 uk

The respect between these two is there to see.

Before proceedings, O'Sullivan and Williams shared a fist bump.

And it's a close encounter in the final. Who will prevail when the evening sessions resumes at around 7pm.

ali campbell tour 2024 uk

Rocket by name...

Incredibly, Rocket Ronnie won the last four frames in astonishing amount of time.

It took the legend just 37 minutes.

That included breaks of 102, 127, and 121,

He's not wasting any time.

Eid-al-Fitr 2024 LIVE updates as end of Ramadan celebrated across UK and Greater Manchester

Eid-al-Fitr will take place on April 10 following confirmed moon sightings

  • Updated 12:36, 10 APR 2024

Muslims turn out to Platt Fields park to celebrate Eid al-Fitr.

Eid celebrations are taking across Greater Manchester today with thousands of people expected to gather to for the festivities. It follows positive sightings of the crescent moon of Shawal both in the UK, Saudi Arabia and Morocco.

Eid ul Fitr or Eid-al-Fitr, is one of the two main holidays in the Islamic calendar.

Eid arrives at the end of the holy month of Ramadan which is a period in which practising Muslims abstain from eating or drinking from sunset to sundown. The date of Eid is determined by the sighting of the crescent of a new moon.

Read more: What is the 'Night of Power' in Ramadan and why is it important?

Worshippers in the UK follow the moon sightings in Saudi Arabia and Morocco because Islamic law states that if you are unable to see the moon in your country then you must follow the sighting of the closest Muslim nation.

On Monday Morocco's Ministry of Islamic Affairs said it is to hold its Eid moonsighting on Tuesday night. The North African country started Ramadan on March 12, so Tuesday is the 29th day when attempts must be made to see the crescent.

Forecasts suggested the crescent would be easily visible on April 9. This would mean Ramadan coming to an end and Eid starting the next day, today, April 10.

More images of the prayers and celebrations at Eid in the Park in Manchester earlier

Eid prayers took place at Eid in the Park at Platt Fields Park in Fallowfield this morning to mark the beginning of Eid Al Fitr , which is held following the end of Ramadan.

Originally set to take place in the park itself, the Eid prayers have been relocated to the nearby indoor dome building at Platt Lane Sports Complex due to heavy rain and ‘waterlogged grounds’.

Alongside prayers, the Eid in the Park event will include a number of food stalls and local traders, as well as a funfair and family-friendly activities. Below you can see some images from prayers held earlier today.

Huge queues for Eid in the Park as major celebration gets underway

Earlier we reported on the large queues that had formed at Platt Fields Park as worshippers gathered.

Organised by the Alfurqan Mosque and Islamic Centre, based in Rusholme, and Makki Masjid, in Levenshulme, the event got underway today from 9.30am for the first of three morning Salah prayers delivered by Sheikh Mohammed Ali.

Third and final prayer finished at Platt Fields

As Rami mentioned earlier, there were two scheduled prayer sessions planned for the Platt Lane Complex Dome, but a third was added due to demand.

The third session has now wrapped up, with those leaving the venue greeted by the rain.

How to wish someone Happy Eid and what Eid Mubarak means

To wish someone a happy Eid, you can say Eid Mubarak , which means 'have a blessed Eid'. You can also say Eid Saeed , meaning 'Happy Eid'.

Eid ul-Fitr, also spelled Eid al-Fitr, is also marked with prayer, good deeds and donating to charity. Children usually get cash gifts and wear new outfits for Eid.

How is Eid celebrated around the world?

The Eid al-Fitr holiday marks the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan and is celebrated by Muslims with family reunions, new clothes and sweet treats.

Many Muslims will go to set prayer times at their local mosque in the morning before school or work to begin Eid al-Fitr celebrations.

It's traditional to wear new clothes and recite a short prayer called a takbeer on the way to the mosque as well as eat something sweet such as dates.

An opportunity to come together with friends and family, meals are shared and gifts exchanged as part of the celebration. Children are soemtimes given money called Eidiyah or Eidi.

An Eid message from The University Of Manchester Islamic Society

The University Of Manchester Islamic Society is one of several venues across Greater Manchester holding prayers this morning.

In an update yesterday, they confirmed they would be holding Eid prayer at McDougall Prayer Hall at 8am and also shared some of the Eid Sunnah acts.

Third prayer added to schedule at Platt Fields due to demand

Our reporter Rami is currently at the Platt Lane Complex Dome next to Platt Fields Park where Eid prayers are taking place.

There were two rounds of prayers scheduled, but a third has now been added due to demand.

Prime Ministers shares Eid message

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has this morning shared a video message with those celebrating Eid.

"I wish you all the joy of this festival that brings people together for thanks and reflection. I want to say thank you, not just for your contribution in so many fields from the NHS, to business, politics and the armed forces but for your generosity, hard work, commitment to service and for your compassion to those in needs."

"This year I know many will be thinking partoicualrly of those in Gaza, the bloodshed and suffering are unbearable. I want you to know we are doing everything we can to help bring the conflict to an end, ensure the hostages are released and get life saving food, shelter and medical aid to civilains in Gaza.

"Here in the UK also we are working to make British Muslims feel secure and tackle sickening and utterly unacceptable hatred. That's why we've committed over £29m every year for the next four years to help protect the mosques, faith schools and community venues.

"But for now, as people gather to pray and spend time visiting family and friends, I simply want to wish you and Muslims around the world a blessed and peaceful Eid."

Weather forecast for today

Greater Manchester is set for another unsettled day of weather following Storm Pierrick. The storm, named by Meteo France, brought rain and heavy wind to the UK yesterday.

Several flood alerts were in place across the North West as the region was battered by the elements.

Six amber flood alerts remain in Cheshire this morning (Wednesday), including at the Mersey estuary in Warrington, meaning flooding is 'possible'.

Meanwhile, two red flood warnings are in place in Lancashire, for the Wyre estuary in Thornton and at Sunderland Point on the coast near Lancaster - meaning residents should 'act now', according to the Environment Agency.

Greater Manchester looks poised to escape the worst of today's weather.

More on the weather here .

What happened to Eid in the Park?

The Eid prayer which was originally to be held outdoors at Platt Fields Park will now move indoors.

Two prayers will take place inside the Platt Lane Complex Dome. The first prayer will take place at 10am and the second at 11am.

Organisers have told the MEN that they expect around 5-6k people to attend the prayers with others being advised to pray at their local mosque.

The event usually attracts huge numbers to Fallowfield. The funfair and stalls will still be there.

Pakistan, India, Turkey and more announce Eid-al-Fitr 2024

More countries have confirmed the sighting of the crescent moon thus declaring Eid-al-Fitr to be on Wednseday (April 10)

Why some mosques have confirmed Eid-al-Fitr and others haven't

While some Greater Manchester mosques have declared Wednesday to be Eid-al-Fitr, other masjids have advised their congregration to wait until Tuesday evening for confirmation. This morning the Manchester Central Mosque told its members that it will make an announcment on when Eid prayer is taking place at around 8pm this evening.

Meanwhile, local mosques like Makki Masjid, Khizra Mosque and the British Muslim Heritage Centre have already declared that Eid-al-Fitr will take place on Wednesday (April 10).

In Islam, the date for Eid is determined by the sighting of the crescent of the new moon. In Islamic law if you are unable to see the moon in your country, then Muslims are advised to follow the sighting of the closest Islamic country. For years, many worshippers have been following the guidance of Saudi Arabia and Morroco as there is no official body in the UK.

Saudi Arabia has already announced Eid will start on Wednesday, April 10, and many in the UK have followed suit, while many in the UK are still waiting for an official announcement as they have been following the lunar sightings of Morocco who have yet to confirm a lunar sighting.

List of Greater Manchester mosques who have confirmed Eid-al-Fitr 2024

While a number of mosques in Greater Manchester are still waiting to confirm when their Eid-al-Fitr will take place. A a few have already confirmed that they will be celebrating Eid and have detailed what time Eid prayers will be held.

A list of the mosques are:

  • Khizra Mosque, Cheetham Hill Road - 7am, 8am, 9:15am and 10:30am
  • British Muslim Heritage Centre, College Road - 8:15am, 9:30am, 10:45am
  • Eid in the Park, Platt Lane Complex Dome - 10am. 11am
  • University of Manchester Islamic Society, McDougall's Prayer Hall, Burlington Street - 8am

Local mosque to hold third prayer following cancellation of Eid in the Park

Due to heavy rain, Eid prayer on Platt Fields Park has been cancelled and instead moved indoors to the Platt Lane Complex Dome.

Local mosque, Makki Masjid will be holding a third prayer to make up for the added demand of indoor spaces. The prayers will take place at 6:30am, 8am and 9:30am for both men and women.

On Facebook they said: "Assalaamu alaykum. As announced yesterday evening, Eid-al-Fitr will be celebrated tomorrow, Wednesday 10th April 2024, Insha’Allah.

"Due to the heavy rain in recent days and the forecast for tomorrow, we think it will be very difficult and inconvenient for people to attend and pray at Platt Fields Park, even though there will be prayers in the indoor Platt Lane Complex Dome.

"Therefore we have arranged an extra 3rd Jama’ah at the Masjid to make it more convenient and accessible to the congregation, Insha’Allah.

"Please see the poster for more details. The set up for the all the Eid prayers will be the same as the taraweeh prayers - brothers will pray in the new build and sisters will pray on the first floor of the old building."

How Sudanese families in Manchester are marking Eid amidst the conflict back home

During the month of Ramadan a number of muslim nations have been thrown into turmoil, making it even harder for worshippers also observing the month of Ramadan.

In this report, the MEN's Hakim Hafazalla detailed how the people of Sudan will be marking Eid amidst conflict. You can read the article here.

Manchester Central Mosque releases 'important' Eid al Fitr announcement

Manchester Central Mosque has released an important announcement as many wait for the start of Eid al-Fitr.

The end of Ramadan is right around the corner, however, many waiting for the new Islamic month of Shawal and thus the start of Eid al-Fitr are still holding out for an official sighting of the moon. Eid al-Fitr is one of the two primary Eid events in the Islamic calendar and marks the end of Ramadan's daily fasting from dawn till dusk.

The date for Eid will be determined by the sighting the crescent of the new moon. While Saudi Arabia has already announced Eid will start on Wednesday, April 10, many in the UK are still waiting for an official announcement.

You can read the Mosque's announcement here.

Eid moon sighting event to be held in order to decide Eid-al-Fitr 2024 in UK

Royal Museums Greenwich and New Crescent Society are holding an event to determine the date for Eid in the UK. The collaboration will see the two organisatoins work scour the skies on this evening and the event will be streamed live on Facebook.

They said: "Tune in live as we scan the evening skies for the new crescent moon which signals the end of Ramadan and the start of Eid al-Fitr in the UK. Director of the New Crescent Society Imad Ahmed and Royal Observatory astronomer Jake Foster will host the broadcast. They'll be joined virtually by New Crescent Society members from across the country, who will dial in to report their own sightings of the moon.

"During the broadcast, Imad and Jake will also discuss the links between astronomy and Islam, the Islamic calendar, and tips for sighting the new crescent moon yourself."

The Facebook Live event starts at 8pm tonight and you can watch it here .

Manchester Eid in the Park prayer to be held indoors following weather forecast

Plans for Manchester's biggest Eid event may be scuppered due to the weather. The Eid prayer which was originally to be held outdoors at Platt Fields Park will now move indoors should it rain on Wednesday (April 10).

Organisers have alerted worhsippers that two prayers will take place inside the Platt Lane Complex Dome should the heavens open. The first prayer will take place at 10am and the second at 11am.

Weather forecast for Eid

It may be bad news for those looking to perform their Eid prayers outdoors after weather warnings were issued across the North West. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather force for wind and heavy rain across the North West coast that is in place until 3pm today (April 9).

Wednesday is forecast to be another rainy day with wind gusts reaching around 29mph during the afternoon. This means that most Eid prayers will most likely take place indoors instead of on fields and local parks like we have seen in the past few years.

British Muslim Heritage Centre make Eid announcement

The British Muslim Heritage Centre in Whalley Range have announced that Eid will be celebrated on Wednesday (April 10). Three Eid prayers will be held at the mosque on College Road with the first one taking place at 8:15am.

What we know so far

Good morning, let's give a recap of everything we know so far regarding when Eid will be celebrated

  • Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Australia and more have declare Eid to be on Wednesday (April 10)
  • Other countries like Morocco have opted to not declare the date for Eid as they wait for local moon sightings
  • Makki Masjid in Longsight have confirmed that Eid prayers and celebrations for the mosque will go ahead on Wednesday
  • Manchester Central Mosque say they will make announcement on when Eid celebrations will take place after confirmation of moon sightings on Tuesday evening
  • Weather forecast for Morocco suggests that the moon sighting should be easily visible this evening

Eid in the Park 2024

One of the biggest celebrations of Eid al-Fitr in the north is right here in Greater Manchester with the popular Eid In The Park festival at Platt Fields Park. The event, which has been attended by more than 20,000 since its inception in 2017, will feature salah prayers, food stalls, local traders and family-friendly attractions including a funfair.

The festival is organised by the Alfurqan Mosque and Islamic Centre, based in Rusholme, and Makki Masjid, based in Levenshulme.

The two-day event is currently scheduled to take place from Tuesday (April 9) or Wednesday (April 10) but this is entirely dependent on the moon sighting.

The free event will begin from 9.30am with salah prayers on the first day. The funfair and stalls will be open for two days.
