Taste of Disney

Animal kingdom lodge’s wanyama safari & dinner.

I will be dividing my review of the Wanyama Safari experience into 3 parts – Welcome Reception, Safari, and the Jiko Dinner.

Part 1 – Wanyama Safari Welcome Reception

Let’s begin with the beverages…

The two choices were water and Organic Rooibos Iced Tea, along with some locally produced honey for sweetening. We were told that rooibos comes from the rugged slopes of the Western Cape Mountains in South Africa. Also that this famous red bush tea is caffeine free and tastes like a light Ceylon black tea.

Next up were these three snacks…

Tropical Fruit Chewy Granola Bars and White Chocolate Scones with Cranberries and Pistachios

African-spiced Trail Mix

Then there were these sweet treats that looked delicious…

Kenyan Coffee Mousse Tarts

And last, the chef was carving for us…

House-made Pork and Beef Boerwors Sausage

Which was accompanied by these three sauces/dips…

Harissa, Cucumber Raita, and Mango Sambal

Though I was unable to fully appreciate the food and beverages which were provided to us at this Welcome Reception, I was very impressed by the number of different things offered and the beautiful way that they were presented. As further evidence of this beauty, here are a few photos of the African-themed items which adorned the buffet table…

Part 2 – The Safari At a few minutes before 4:00 our two guides arrived at the Jiko Wine Room to introduce themselves and lead us outside to the hotel’s main entrance where our safari vehicle awaited us… Once we had boarded, we set off on our tour of the savannas which surround Animal Kingdom Lodge resort… Animal Kingdom Lodge is made up of two buildings, Kidani Village and Jambo house and there are four savannas surrounding the Lodge: Sunset, Arusha, Uzima and the newest one, Pembe (not listed on the above map). Each of these savannas is the home to different animals and birds, with the exception of the Reticulated Giraffes, which were in all three of the savannas we toured. Our safari began with the Sunset savanna, which is located over on the Kidani Village side of the resort. We reached the savanna by passing through a “backstage” barn area and our guide told us about the animals which are housed there. I always find these “behind the scenes” areas and information very interesting. Once we had entered the savanna, we were quickly greeted by this curious ostrich, who came within arm’s reach of our vehicle… I don’t recall exactly what this hoofed animal was so I’ll go with a white antelope… Next we were able to see the beautiful Kidani building from an animal’s point of view… Then we came across the first of many giraffes that we saw during our safari… I’ll warn you now that I took many giraffe photos, as they are my favorite of all the animals and birds on the AKL savannas. I was thrilled when we got “up close and personal” with this beautiful giraffe… And then another giraffe… But even more beautiful than a giraffe eating, is a giraffe on the move… Ok, you are probably ready to see something other than giraffes now, right? Like maybe this Marabou stork… Some Ankole Cattle… Next is my, “One of these things is not like the others” photo… Let’s see, what else? Oh yes, this couple having a “not so private” dinner for two… And this zebra seemed to have misplaced his stripes… Not sure what this poor animal is, but he has broken off one of his horns. Ouch, that had to have hurt!… And then the lyrics to “Home on the Range” come to mind when you see all the antelope that were playing… Thomson’s Gazelle Kudu (not sure if Greater or Lesser?) Common Eland Roan Antelope “And the skies are not cloudy all day.”… So in conclusion, the safari was an awesome experience and one that I would recommend to any animal lovers out there. If you enjoy the Kilimanjaro Safari at Animal Kingdom, I can almost guarantee that you will love this one. Our guide was a great combination of entertaining and informative. He told us some interesting stories which gave us an idea of the individual personalities of some of the animals we were seeing. And the best part for me was being able to take photos without a zoom lens or without the vehicle moving. But the experience does not end here…if you are a foodie, the best was yet to come.

Wanyama safari part 3 – the dinner at jiko.

Following our nearly 2 hour long tour through the various savannas which surround the Animal Kingdom Lodge we disembarked from our safari vehicle at Jambo House and were led by our tour guide to the resort’s signature restaurant.

And for those who might be interested, I took photos of Jiko’s regular and Kids menus (as of Oct. 22, 2014)…

Now on to our dinner. We were seated at one of the four-top tables not far from the window…

…which soon was filled with food.

But first, let’s take a look at the special Wanyama Safari dinner menu…

Ok, now for the food. We were first given an amuse bouche which was not listed on the menu…

Blue Cheese Cheesecake topped with honey

This was really, really tasty. I love the combination of the salty blue cheese with the sweet honey. We also started with a cocktail, a Jiko Sunriser with Parrot Bay Rum and Banana Liqueur along with orange, pineapple, and cranberry juices. I really like fruity cocktails and had enjoyed this one during a previous visit to Jiko so I was happy that this was included in our Safari dinner.

Next a basket of three breads was served…

This included Khobz, Poppy Seed Lavash, and my favorite, House-made Naan…

The breads were accompanied by an assortment of four dips…

My favorite of these was the Kalamata Hummus (the tan one) which was made from mashed chickpeas blended with a sesame seed paste, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, garlic, and kalamata olives.

For our next course we were each given our own plate with a sample of three of the appetizers which are listed on Jiko’s regular menu…

From left to right: Inguday Tibs in Brik, Jiko Salad, and Crispy Duck “Bobotie” Roll

These were accompanied by our choice of two Graham Beck wines, one a white (Chenin Blanc) and the other a red (Cabernet Sauvignon). I generally prefer white wines so I chose the Chenin Blanc and I enjoyed it with both this course and the next one.

As for the appetizers, two of these were new to me but I had seen them on the menu previously and had wanted to try them. The first is the Jiko salad which consisted of summer greens (mostly frisee), watermelon, blueberries, caviar limes, smoked almonds, feta cheese, and lime-date vinaigrette. Since I’m not a fan of frisee, I didn’t really care for the greens part of the salad but I did enjoy the feta cheese and watermelon. All in all though, it was my least favorite of the three. The duck bobotie roll was pretty good. I probably wouldn’t order it again, but I’m glad that my curiosity was finally satisfied. Now the third sample on our plate is one of my favorite Disney World appetizers. The Inguday Tibs in Brik remind me of spanakopita, only even better in my opinion. In addition to the usual spinach and cheese, the tibs in brik also have mushrooms.

Here is photo of the full-size portion of the Inguday Tibs in Brik appetizer that was taken during a previous visit to Jiko…

Next came a huge onslaught of food, beginning with us each receiving a sampler plate containing three of Jiko’s popular entrees…

From left and moving clockwise: Botswana-style “Seswaa” Beef Short Rib, Maize-crusted Monkfish with Tomato-Butter Sauce, and Harissa Chicken and Saffron Broth.

I’ll start with my least favorite, which was the chicken. Although this was moist and juicy, I found it a little boring flavor-wise. It was by no means bad though, just not as good as the other two entrees. Regarding the short rib, this was something I had had before but didn’t like. I have a very low tolerance for fatty meat and unfortunately I ran into this problem when I had the short rib at Jiko a few years ago. Thankfully it was not a problem this time. The meat was tender and flavorful and all of my dining companions said it was their favorite of the three entrees. Though I enjoyed it very much and would consider ordering the short rib again, my favorite was the fish. This was a mild tasting white fish with a very good maize (or cornmeal) crust. I had the full-size portion of this entree (pictured below) the last time I dined at Jiko (April 2014) and enjoyed it. It will be a difficult decision between having this again and giving the short rib another try on my next visit to Jiko.

The other three sides I did try, as you can see from my plate…

Again I’ll start with my least favorite, the Ancient Grain Pilaf…

This was ok, nothing special.

However, the other two side dishes were great…

The famous Jiko Macaroni & Cheese and Spoon Bread Souffle

The Macaroni & Cheese used to be served with Jiko’s Filet, however that changed about three or four years ago. But that didn’t stop guests from requesting it so they placed it on the Kids’ menu in order to accommodate the many fans of their mac & cheese. Although the spoon bread was very good too, I believe that the macaroni & cheese was the unanimous favorite side dish at our table.

And that just leaves our desserts, which again we were each served a sampler platter of three of Jiko’s desserts.

From left to right: Malva Pudding, Avocado Custard Cake with Blood, and Ghanaian Chocolate and Kenyan Coffee Pot de Creme Tart

Ok, let’s switch it up this time and start with the best…

Ghanaian Chocolate and Kenyan Coffee Pot de Creme

This was delicious and though I was quite full by this time, I could not stop myself from eating all of this. My three dining companions were equally enamored with this dessert and we all agreed that it was by far the best dessert of the three.

Now for the other two…

Malva Pudding with Toasted Meringue, Lemon Curd, and Wild Strawberries & Avocado Custard Cake with Blood Orange Sorbet

My tablemates seemed to like the Malva Pudding but for me it was just okay. It had a spongy texture that I didn’t care for, plus I’m not really a fan of lemon curd. As for the Avocado Custard Cake, we all agreed that this looked much better than it tasted. Actually this dessert had very little taste, which was disappointing considering how beautiful it looked.

That completed our meal, however there were two surprises yet to come…one good and one not so good. First the good surprise. We were each given a bag full of goodies to take home…

Our server then asked how the checks were to be divided. The couple was treating their friend, so we told him that only my check needed to be separate. When he returned with the two checks, I took a look at mine and saw the total of $380!!! As you may recall, I had forgotten to inquire as to the current price of the Wanyama Safari when I reserved it but the most recent information I found said the price was $190. Figuring this information might be outdated, I had budgeted as much as $250 for the safari. So as you can imagine, I immediately broke out into a cold sweat. As my mind began to frantically run through the plans for the remainder of my trip in an attempt to figure out what I was going to have to forfeit due to my stupid mistake, it was interrupted by four wonderful words, “Our bill is wrong.” Yes, our server had me picking up the tab for their lady friend, so actually my bill was supposed to be only $190 (which included both tax and gratuity). So with that crisis averted and my bill corrected, I left feeling quite happy with my decision to do the Wanyama Safari and satisfied that I had gotten my money’s worth.

Jiko is the signature restaurant of Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, combining an elegant dining experience with a taste of Africa.

Located on the bottom floor just down the stairs from the lobby, Jiko is tucked away like a hidden trail, off the beaten path but well worth exploring.

Front portion of dining room at Jiko – The Cooking Place at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge

As soon as you enter the restaurant, the continuity of the resort’s theme is evident.

Wood features give a natural feel, while the color choices speak to the wide-open skies and savannas of the African plains.

Large windows allow natural light to stream in, with a beautiful view of the water feature right outside.

Marble bar top and stemware, with 2 bright-orange wood-burning clay ovens beyond

One of the most striking aspects of the restaurant are the twin wood-burning ovens, which fit with the theme, as jiko literally means oven .

An open kitchen allows you to watch the chefs work as the changing colored lights mimic the African sunset.

All in all, the ambiance of Jiko is elegant, unique, and romantic.

Whatever your preference for seating, Jiko will meet your needs.

While you can’t necessarily guarantee a particular location within the restaurant, when you make your reservation you can indicate any requests you might have.

Jiko has freestanding tables, booths, half-table, and bar seats. With two tiers of seating, there is plenty of space between you and the other guests to maintain the privacy of your meal.

The food at Jiko is inspired by African, Indian, and Mediterranean flavors.

A scoop of ice cream served atop a tuile cookie

Each dish, from appetizers to dessert, brings together unique tastes and spices for an unforgettable dining experience.

Steak, chicken, seafood, vegan and vegetarian dishes are all available, so no matter what your preference or dietary restrictions you will be able to find a delicious option.

The menu is also seasonal, so there are always new dishes to try, even if you previously have been to Jiko.

Some of the popular menu items include the Tibs in Brik, a mushroom, cheese, and spinach filo parcel served with a curry vinaigrette.

For your main course, try the Botswana-style Beef Short Rib served with hominy, peas, butternut squash, and mushrooms. Tender and delicious, this will quickly become one of your favorites.

A staple dessert item is the Malva Pudding, which is a soft steamed cake with sweet African flavors.

While Jiko is a bit more on the adult side, if you do choose to take your children, the kid’s menu has a combination of African fare with picky-friendly options.

A more exploratory eater might like to go for the Shrimp with Kushari or the Market Fresh Fish, pairing it with ancient grains or seasonal veggies. If that is not your kiddo, Jiko also has mac and cheese and cheese pizza.

Know Before You Go

Jiko does have a minimum dress code for your dining experience:

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

When Disney indicates a dress code, they do take this seriously.

Make sure you follow the guidelines to avoid any issues with your reservation or experience, including your kids if they accompany you.

If you are looking for something less formal, check out one of the other amazing dining options at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.

If you have purchased the Disney Dining Plan , it will take two credits per guest for your Jiko meal.

Jiko is only open for dinner, so if you want to check out this wonderful location you will want to book as soon as possible.

Reservations can be done online (which is the preferred method), through your My Disney Experience app, or by calling (714) 781-3463.

Jiko Wine Tasting

Every Wednesday, the sommeliers at Jiko host a wine tasting featuring the wine regions of South Africa.

Expertly paired with cheeses, fruits, and other tasty treats, the sommelier will walk you through each wine and explain the flavor notes.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

You will be encouraged to try to wine on its own and then again with the food items to experience the different depths of flavor.

If you enjoy a good wine, this would be a fun and delicious experience for you to try!

The experience is meant to be a small gathering, so getting a reservation ahead of time is a must. While you can make same-day reservations, there is limited availability.

The tasting is an extra cost, and plan to show your appreciation of the sommelier with a gratuity.

Prices for this event are subject to change, so be sure to check the price when you book online .

The Jiko dress code is still in effect for this event, even though it takes place in the afternoon.

If you are planning to come straight from the parks, you might want to bring appropriate clothes with you and freshen up in the locker rooms by the fitness center before attending the event (or of course in your room if you are staying at the Animal Kingdom Lodge).

Boma – Flavors of Africa

Foodie Friday: Jungle Juice, POG, and Frunch

An all you care to eat buffet, Boma is a delicious way to start your day.

Mixing together traditional African dishes with American breakfast favorites, this fabulous breakfast will have you coming back again and again.

Dining area at Boma—Flavors of Africa, featuring a thatched ceiling and windows with a panoramic garden view

Located on the bottom floor of the resort, right next to Jiko, the open spaces and bustling atmosphere will wake you right up.

Natural light comes in through the windows looking out to gorgeous vegetation and the pool area, as well as the softly glowing lanterns hanging from the thatched roof above.

The décor in this area still fits with the resort theme, but has a bit of an open market feeling that goes with the sampling of different dishes throughout the buffet.

Bread pudding on a plate with fruit, including a strawberry, grapes and cantaloupe cubes

Breakfast is the perfect selection of both sweet and savory items, some of our favorites being the seasoned breakfast potatoes, oak-grilled asparagus and tomatoes, waffles, and the fabulous French toast bread pudding.

Additionally, there is an excellent selection of pastries, including Zebra Domes, an Animal Kingdom Lodge staple.

Some of the African treats include African fruit fool salad and corn beef bobotie, which is a type of South African quiche.

Other menu items rotate in on a seasonal basis, which will have you coming back to this buffet again and again.

To drink, try some of the refreshing tropical juices or wake yourself up with bold Kenyan coffee. If you like something with a bit of kick with your breakfast, alcoholic beverages are available.

Boma is also open for dinner, another all you care to eat experience with a focus on the savory.

Much like its sister restaurant, Jiko, the dinner at Boma changes with the seasons. While a few beloved dishes tend to stick around, the choices change with some regularity at Boma making it a constant favorite among the Disney foodies.

To begin your meal, consider one of the seasonal soups. Right now, some of the unique offerings include Cape Malay Lamb Stew, Ghanaian Oxtail Stew, Boerewors Sausage Stew, and Curry-Coconut-Cauliflower Soup.

Rotating salads accompany these soups and stews, ranging from pasta salads, to cold seafood or chicken, to fruit offerings.

Oak-smoked rotisserie chicken on a plate with vegetables and, in the background, a pan with more chicken and a pot with more vegetables

If you are a carnivore, you are sure to be thrilled by the main dishes.

Whole roasted chicken, slow-cooked ribs, pork shoulder, and beef sirloin all make an appearance in this fabulous array.

Traditional African dishes of fufu, pap and chakalaka, and spiced sweet potato are also available. Different types of rice and potatoes are the featured sides, some African inspired and others a bit closer to home.

Buffet station with an assortment of freshly-baked cookies

For dessert, the bread pudding makes a reappearance, as do the Zebra Domes and Malva Pudding.

Other seasonal items are also available, a current favorite being the African Apple Cake.

Whether you start your day with Boma or finish with them in the evening, this restaurant will surely become one of your favorites!

Full Menu for Boma – Flavors of Africa

For both breakfast and dinner, the prices are fixed for adults and children (and tend to fluctuate throughout the year).

Meal prices include most food options and basic beverages, like soda, tea, and juice.

There are specialty non-alcoholic beverages and alcoholic drinks available for an additional charge, so make sure you know what you’re asking for before you order.

Boma is included on the Disney Dining Plan and costs one table service credit per guest.

Breakfast is $20 cheaper for adults and $11 cheaper for kids, so if you’re looking to save a bit you might want to go for breakfast rather than dinner.

However, if you plan to go to Boma on a park day, dinner is the way to go. Trying to start your park day with a big breakfast at a popular restaurant might cost you more time than you would like to take.

The atmosphere is a bit noisy and can feel a little crowded, as the tables are fairly close together.

Since it is buffet style, there will be plenty of people moving around. This makes for an informal and somewhat chaotic atmosphere.

In our opinion, this restaurant is definitely still worth it, but if you like something quieter, Boma might not be for you.

The informality makes Boma a great place for kids, unless you have little ones that need to get up and move around. With the crowds, that may not be the best idea.

Located in Kidani Village, Sanaa is a cool fusion between African and Indian cuisine, emphasizing the exquisite flavors and spices of different regions.

While Sanaa is best known for its delicious lunch and dinner fare, a breakfast option was recently added to help meet the needs of the guests at any time of day.

Kuamsha Breakfast

While later in the day Sanaa is a table service restaurant, from 7:00am-10:00am it becomes a quick-service breakfast location.

Especially if you are staying at the resort, this is a great breakfast option if you’re trying to get out the door and to the parks or off to the airport.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

No reservations are required for breakfast, just drop in and head on over to the counter specially set up for breakfast.

While there are items that you would need to order and wait to be prepared, like the Shahi Tukra French Toast or Boere Breakfast, plenty of options are available in the grab and go section.

Small dishes like bobotie pie, banana bread, and house-made sausage sit beside other breakfast favorites.

If you really need to get on the move, you can collect what you need, pay, and be on your way. However, if you want to sit in the restaurant to enjoy your breakfast, you are more than welcome.

As Sanaa overlooks the savanna, this is a beautiful way to start your morning.

Collage of Sanaa Kuamsha Breakfast Entrees at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

If you are staying one of the Deluxe Studios at Kidani Village, this would also be a great breakfast option as the studios lack a full kitchen.

If you need to eat earlier than 7:00am, grab a few items the day before and keep them in your mini-fridge or refrigerator (depending on your room).

Warm the dishes up the next morning in your room and enjoy a hot meal before you head off to your day.

For those using the Disney Dining Plan, this would count as a quick service meal, which would mean one entrée and one beverage per person. If you would rather go a la carte or use snack credits, that would be an option as well.

There are a few differences between the lunch and dinner menus at Sanaa.

Window tables with savanna views across from booth tables, separated by a walkway

Beginning with the appetizers, the Indian-style bread service (which is the featured appetizer) and the samosas are on both menus, however, the remaining choices are lighter fare and are also a bit lighter on your wallet.

Some of the options include a refreshing salad sampler and light but delicious Shrimp Tinashe.

The entrees are of the salad and sandwich variety, but with a flavorful twist.

Try tandoori chicken open-faced on house-made naan or tandoori shrimp on a crispy harvest salad. Even a burger and pulled pork sandwich get a twist, topping the burger with spiced mustard and goat cheese while the pork is flavored with Kenyan coffee and served in a bread bowl.

The dessert choices are the same at both lunch and dinner, and they all have an African or Indian vibe that makes these sweet treats special.

The kheer, a coconut rice pudding, and the caramel n’dizi, a banana, chocolate, and hazelnut delight, are particular favorites.

Sanaa also has a kid’s menu with exotic options for more adventurous eaters…and pizza or a cheeseburger for those that aren’t.

Everyone who has been to Sanaa will tell you that you have to start with the Indian-style bread service.

This bread service comes with five different house-made breads and nine accompaniments for a delightful mix and match munch fest.

Plenty of people will come to Sanaa just for the bread!

Indian-style bread service with 4 dipping sauces

Dinner also features an artisanal cheese selection and Oxtail Umngqusho as distinctive evening appetizers.

Entrees provide something for everyone, whether you are a meat-eater, vegetarian, or somewhere in between.

Two delicious lamb dishes allow you to pick something out of the norm, or you can try the African-inspired Biryani with vegetables, chicken, or shrimp.

South African flavors come through in highly flavored rice setting off your chosen accompaniment.

True meat lovers will enjoy the South African Braaivleis, a meat platter with traditional sides.

Dinner also sees an increase in the beverage options, both of the alcoholic and nonalcoholic varieties.

Try a delicious fruit and yogurt smoothie or all-natural lemonade to compliment your African meal, or jazz things up with an African beer or South African liqueur.

The dessert and children’s options remain the same at dinnertime as they do during the lunch hour, which makes planning ahead easy if you are returning to check out the dinner selection.

Dinner at Sanaa will cost one table service credit if you are on the Disney Dining Plan.

Full Menu for Sanaa

While breakfast does not require a reservation, you will want to book ahead online for lunch or dinner.

As the restaurant has a beautiful view of the savanna, you might want to go at lunchtime if you are interested in seeing more of the animals.

The later you go in the evening, the more likely it will become too dark to see any wildlife.

This dining experience is family-friendly and less formal than other options at the Animal Kingdom Lodge.

There isn’t a dress code and you can feel free to come as you are. Sanaa would be a great option if you need to take a break from the parks in the middle of the day or for a relaxing evening meal.

Flavor and spice are the name of the game for this experience though, so make sure you look through the full menu before booking.

Your kiddo might be able to opt-out with a cheeseburger, but the same can’t be said for the adults in your party!

Named for a river that runs through Kenya and Tanzania, Mara is the primary quick service location at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge.

A fun and informal space a stone’s throw from the Uzima pool, this is a great place to go for any meal or to grab a quick snack.

Mara is open from 7:00am-11:30pm, so no matter your schedule you’ll be able to count on this location for awesome food at any time.

From Disney classics to fun African favorites, Mara has options for every taste.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

If you are looking for a hot breakfast, the Bounty Platter or the Croissant Breakfast Sandwich are perfect options to get you started for the day. Both have plenty of protein to get you fueled up and off to the parks in no time.

If you’re craving something sweet, the classic Mickey Waffles with seasonal berries and breakfast meat will hit the spot.

For something more exotic, the Safari Bobotie is a cool plant-based option with African flavors.

Need something a bit quicker? Check out the assortment of pastries or snacks, like fruit or a yogurt parfait. You can even get simple cereal with milk.

For the kids, there are two platter options, one with scrambled eggs and the other with Mikey waffles. Both come with a choice of breakfast meat, a yogurt smoothie with choice of small bottled water, or lowfat milk.

You also could get one adult meal for two kids to split, or if you have an older kiddo who can eat more, spending the extra on the bigger meal might pay off later.

A large flatbread covered with melted cheese sits on a wooden cutting board

Like breakfast, Mara has American classics and African dishes available, all of which are delicious.

Go for a cheeseburger or crispy chicken sandwich, or check out the African Potjie or Tamarind Barbecue Pork Sandwich.

You can also get their signature flatbread, which make perfect sharable items at a great price.

If you’d rather get something lighter, check out the Mara Salad with Chicken or a simple Caesar. There are even plant-based options for vegetarians and vegans.

Chicken nuggets, cheeseburgers, and half-flatbreads are available for the kids, but also a green salad with chicken for a healthy option.

However, what your kids are really going to be excited about are the desserts.

The Giraffe Éclair, filled with caramel custard and chocolate buttercream, or the Okapi Brownie will draw their eyes and make them determined to finish their meals.

Mara also has Zebra Domes, a popular Animal Kingdom Lodge treat. Zebra Domes are made of a decadent chocolate mousse, baked with an African liqueur, and then coated with white chocolate drizzled with chocolate to replicate a zebra’s stripes.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

Two meals join the menu as specialty dinner dishes, the Oak-fired Rotisserie Chicken Dinner, and Slow-roasted Barbeque Ribs, both flavored with African spices and served with cool African sides (and French fries).

The rest of the menu is the same as lunchtime, although with dinner you might prefer to grab one of the alcoholic beverages available like a Kenyan beer or a delicious sangria.

Maybe you’ll also be comfortable grabbing an extra dessert or two, we won’t judge.

Full Menu for The Mara

While there is seating in the Mara, it is a smaller quick service location and can fill up quickly, especially at peak times.

If you are out at the pool, it might be better to grab your food and take it out to your family rather than fighting for a table.

If you’re staying at the resort and your room is close to the Mara, you might also prefer to take the food back to your room to eat for a bit more privacy and air conditioning.

For the Disney Dining Plan, this will count as your quick service meal for the day. You can also use your snack credits here to snag any of the snack options (including those Zebra Domes!).

This is also a place to get your Refillable Mugs if Animal Kingdom Lodge is your home resort.

As a quick service location, this you can also take advantage of mobile ordering using your My Disney Experience app.

Around the property, there are several bars and lounges, each with their own flair and atmosphere.

Whether it’s offering their own small menu or selections from the associated restaurants, you can find a variety of food and beverages without going for a full meal.

The open-air Uzima Springs Pool Bar with chair-stools

Uzima Springs Pool Bar

Located right by the Uzima pool, this is the perfect location to grab a  cocktail to sip while you lounge or a quick bite to eat.

Sandwiches, flatbreads, and salads are all on the menu at the bar, perfect for a poolside lunch.

Pair your meal with a signature margarita or sangria for the ideal experience.

Entrance to African-themed Maji Pool Bar at Disney's Animal Kingdom Villas – Kidani Village

Maji Pool Bar

Open daily from 11:00am – 3:00pm, the Maji bar is located by the Samawati  Springs pool in Kidani Village.

While this bar also features salads and sandwiches, the selections are slightly more sophisticated than the typical fare.

Caesar Salad with Tandoori Chicken, Berbere-spiced Roast Beef Melt, and Berbere Black-eyed Peas Harvest Salad are great options for a quiet day lounging.

To drink, try a refreshing Frosé or Piña CoLava, or a frozen lemonade if you’re not in the mood for alcohol.

Dining area of Cape Town Lounge and Wine Bar in Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge

Cape Town Lounge and Wine Bar

Located in the entrance to Jiko, sample a selection of delicious South African wines or take advantage of the full bar available.

You also have the option to order from the full Jiko menu and dine at the bar.

An intimate setting, this would be a great date night spot or an opportunity to dine on the Jiko menu if you weren’t able to get a reservation.

Interior of the lounge and bar area at Victoria Falls Lounge

Victoria Falls Lounge

Overlooking Boma, this cool lounge offers small plates and South African wines, as well as your favorite cocktails.

Especially if you’re looking for a lighter dinner or a late-night snack, a wine flight and the cheese and charcuterie plate are great options.

If margaritas are more your style, try the Mt. Kilimarita, one of the specialty cocktails.

It’s important to note that none of the bars or lounges accept the Disney Dining Plan for your meals, although you can use your snack credits for some of the snacks at the pool bars.

That includes if you order off the Jiko menu at the Cape Town Lounge, so if you have the Dining Plan you might want to just go ahead and get a reservation.

Also, these areas are still bars, so you need to be 21 or older to take advantage of these locations.

Dine with an Animal Specialist

Mushroom-like canopy over a row of tables in brown tribal-themed dining room

This unique animal experience takes place at Sanaa, with a four-course lunch at a private lunch with an animal specialist.

The specialist will tell you about the animals and their care as they walk by the window while you enjoy your lunch. Additionally, you’ll learn more about Disney’s work with conservation and animal research.

You’ll start with Sanaa’s signature Indian-style bread service, move into a refreshing salad course, enjoy slow-cooked meats during your entrée course, and finish with a selection of Sanaa’s fabulous desserts.

If you’re vegetarian or vegan, there will certainly be options for you as well! For the kiddos, they can choose between children’s portions of the adult meals or they can get one of their favorites from Sanaa’s kid’s menu.

Throughout the meal, you’ll be able to ask the animal specialist all your animal-related questions.

After the meal, you will be escorted to an enclosure for radiated tortoises, the most endangered species cared for at Disney’s Animal Kingdom. You’ll have the chance for an up-close encounter with the tortoises as the animal specialist tells you all about their care.

As this is meant to be a more intimate gathering, the lunches are limited to twelve people. Since this is the case, you want to make your reservations as soon as possible.

To book a reservation, please call (407) 824-1391.

Finally, guests must be at least eight years old to take advantage of this experience, and all guests under eighteen must be accompanied by a guest eighteen years or older.

Each resort has their own options as well as all your favorites. To place an order, just press “Dining Options” on your in-room phone.

Post-meta.php, animal kingdom lodge restaurants and dining.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

The Animal Kingdom Lodge has two of Walt Disney World’s most highly reviewed restaurants: Boma, AKL’s African buffet, and Jiko–The Cooking Place. The Mara is AKL’s counter service restaurant. NOTE: Because the resort guests are actually entering a wildlife preserve, AKL has disallowed the presence of balloons, plastic straws and cup tops, etc., because of their potential to hurt the animals. Mercifully, they have brought back the cardboard straws (which went AWOL for a couple of years–what a horrible time that was for we uncoordinated folks!).

Boma is available for breakfast and dinner and highlights all-you-can-eat food with an African flair, including spiced and crusted meats, African soups, and an assortment of hummus. Jiko , open only for dinner, offers delicious dishes and tastes of the exotic, including an appetizer that features ostrich meat and entrees flavored with olives, preserved lemons, figs, and other African and Mediterranean flavors. Jiko also offers the nation’s largest assortment of South African wines.

Also, be sure to head over to Sanaa in the Animal Kingdom Lodge’s dedicated Disney Vacation Club area, Kidani Village. This Indian- and African-inspired restaurant offers guests a casual, table-service restaurant with an incredible view of the savanna and its animals.

All of AKL’s dining establishments have an element of the African to them, so prepare picky eaters to possibly try new tastes. Jiko, Boma, and Mara are located on AKL’s main building ground floor–below the lobby–and have views of the pool area .

Sanaa is located in Kidani Village, a short walk from the main building of Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Prior to dinner, be sure to visit Victoria Falls Lounge for a cocktail.

The Starlight Safari at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

11/22/2022   |   Blog , Walt Disney World

INCREDIBLE!! This is how I would describe my recent after-dark safari tour through the savannas at Animal Kingdom Lodge. It was kind of like that old cowboy song, you know...." Oh give me a home where the buffalo roam, Where the deer and the antelope play ". Okay, it’s not exactly like that, but you get where I’m going. From a giraffe who practically stuck her head inside our open-air safari vehicle, to a few zebras who had no intention of moving off our path, and the giant Ankole cattle who's only concern was finishing his dinner. My family and I were amazed at the amount of wildlife we saw during our 1-hour tour.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

The Starlight Safari is currently offered nightly, weather permitting, at 8:30 pm and 10:00 pm, and the cost is $75 - $89 per person, before tax. Reservations are required, and payment is due at time of booking. Check-in for the safari starts about 15 minutes prior to the start of the tour, near the valet area at Kidani Village. Valid ID is required and each guest over 18 must sign a waiver for themselves and any minors in their party under age 17. Please note that the minimum age to participate in the tour is 8 years old, and any guests under 17 years old must be accompanied by an adult. After completing the check-in process, my family climbed into the ride vehicle and were given a night-vision device which made seeing everything in the dark very clear. Each tour has 2 guides. A driver who works very hard to get your vehicle in and out of the savanna's multiple gate systems without any escapee's sneaking behind and the riding guide, who is inside the vehicle to explain everything you are seeing.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

These guides work closely with the animal’s day in and day out and are extremely knowledgeable about each individual one. They know the names, personalities, and likes and dislikes of each one you encounter. They have funny stories, sad stories, and even birth stories! You name it, the guides can tell you about it! My son is very inquisitive and asked many questions and our guide was able to answer each one promptly. During our trek, we went through 3 different savannas’ and saw and learned something different each time.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

Fun Fact : Did you know that giraffe eat up to 75 pounds of food per day, and to accomplish that, they must eat almost the whole time they are awake!

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

During the many times we would encounter wildlife, the guides would stop the vehicle and encourage everyone to get up and take a good look. With the night-vision devices, seeing the wildlife was not hard at all. This experience was definitely the highlight of our vacation and something we’d be more then willing to do again!

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

My family was lucky enough to be staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge during our visit to Walt Disney World, but reservations are open to everyone. Keep in mind, this tour has very limited availability with only about 25 spaces between both tours. If you think this is something you'd like to experience, reach out to your favorite Me and The Mouse Travel Specialist soon and tell them you want to go on a nighttime adventure through an African game reserve!

Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge Restaurants and Dining

D isney World may be a theme park, but that doesn’t mean it lacks in dining options. And its resorts have some of the best restaurants on property. This is especially true at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, a deluxe resort that offers unique dishes inspired by Africa and Asia. So if you’re planning a stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge, here is everything you need to know about Animal Kingdom Lodge restaurants.

(And even if you aren’t staying here, you might want to consider making a trip to AKL just for a meal!)

One thing to know before we get started: There are two sections to Animal Kingdom Lodge. Jambo House is the main resort area, while Kidani Village is the Disney Vacation Club area of the resort. They are two distinct buildings, but there is a shuttle that runs from the front entrance of each resort to take you back and forth.

Plan the Perfect Disney Trip!

Where to stay:.

  • Save money at Deluxe Disney Resorts by using David’s Vacation Club Rentals! This is by far the best place to save money on the best hotels!
  • Want to stay off-property? Here’s a map of the best hotels and vacation rentals near Disney World.

Tickets & Reservations:

  • Use Undercover Tourist (an authorized ticket seller) to save money on Disney tickets . You can save up to $80 per ticket!
  • Need a stroller? We loved using Kingdom Strollers for on-site stroller delivery!

Need Help Planning?

  • Aren’t sure where to start? Sign up here for a free 7-day email course that will walk you through each step of planning your Disney World trip!
  • Download our Disney Planning Spreadsheet , a Google sheet you can take with you on the go, to organize all your Disney World plans! (And use some of our tried and true itineraries!)

Animal Kingdom Lodge Table Service Restaurants

Animal Kingdom Lodge has three different Table Service restaurants. And if you are staying at AKL, I definitely recommend trying to eat at as many of them as possible because they are all delicious!

These are popular restaurants, so we definitely recommend making reservations ahead of time. Remember, you can book your Walt Disney World Dining at 60 days before your resort stay! (See more about planning your Disney trip here .)

Boma – Flavors of Africa

Boma – Flavors of Africa is located in Jambo House and it has a breakfast and a dinner buffet. The food here is excellent and the décor is full of vibrant colors inspired by Africa.

We dined here at breakfast, and I was so impressed with all the options. To start off, we got fruity juice blend that was included in the breakfast.

Then the buffet included unique items like Turkey Bobotie and Pap, but also lots of breakfast items you’ll recognize like Mickey waffles, omelets, cinnamon rolls, and pancakes. There are also yogurt parfaits and an avocado, papaya, and grapefruit salad, and so much more.

Dinner at Boma will have more unique African offerings. You’ll find things like Tabbouleh, North African Cauliflower Salad, Lamb Bobotie, Moroccan Harira, and Butternut Squash Soup. But you’ll also find family-friendly favorites like chicken bites, beef striploin, and macaroni & cheese.

Boma is also the place to get the popular Zebra Domes everyone loves at Animal Kingdom Lodge! These are white chocolate covered chocolate mousse domes, and you can usually find them on the dessert buffet at Boma.

Jiko – The Cooking Place

Jiko is definitely the fine dining location in Animal Kingdom Lodge’s Jambo House. It’s a restaurant that features African, Indian, and Mediterranean dishes that they prepare in their open kitchen. Jiko is only open for dinner, but they have a delicious menu you won’t want to miss. And this is the perfect place to dine if you are celebrating a special occasion on your trip.

Included in your meal is a bread service of amazing Egyptian breads, and you can order appetizers like Duck Confit and Honey-Raisin Flatbread or Braaied Wild Boar Tenderloin.

Entrée options include favorites like Oak-Grilled Filet Mignon and Sustainable Fish. And they also have a great kids menu that includes fish, steak, chicken, or (of course) cheese pizza.

And the desserts here are a work of art. Honestly, I’m not even sure what all my dessert included (except I know it had chocolate mousse) and it was absolutely heavenly.

Pro-Tip: There is a Jiko dress code! This is a fine dining restaurant, so the Disney website states that “Guests are expected to dress accordingly.” So, wear nice clothes, don’t show up in your sweaty theme park t-shirt, and definitely don’t wear a swimsuit!

Sanaa is a table service restaurant located in the Kidani Village section of Animal Kingdom Lodge. To get there from Jambo House, you can take a free shuttle from the front entrance. (Just ask at the front desk if you aren’t sure where the pick up is!)

Sanaa serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Note that for breakfast it is a quick-service restaurant, and for lunch and dinner it is table service.

The menu at Sanaa for lunch and dinner is definitely a favorite among Animal Kingdom Lodge guests. They are especially famous for their Indian style Bread Service! It comes with five different Naan options (like Garlic Naan and Spiced Naan) along with nine different accompaniments (like Red Pepper Hummus, Cucumber Raita, and Tamarind Chutney). If you go to Sanaa, the bread service is definitely the one thing you should ABSOLUTELY order!

The rest of the menu includes Indian and African inspired dishes like Curries, Butter Chicken, and Pork Vindaloo. I had the Samaki Wa Kupaka, which was a sustainable fish dish and it was delicious.

And of course, for your more picky eaters and kids they have a burger and kids options like pizza.

Another important thing about Sanaa is that it is the only restaurant at Animal Kingdom Lodge that looks out directly over the savanna. So this is where to dine if you want to see animals while you eat!

Animal Kingdom Lodge Counter Service Restaurants

While Sanaa does operate as a Quick Service restaurant for breakfast, there is really only one true Quick Service restaurant at Animal Kingdom Lodge: The Mara.

The Mara is located in Jambo House near the Uzima Springs pool. They serve a Quick Service breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Mara is open from 6:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., so this is where to go for your early morning breakfast or late night snacks before or after your theme park day.

For breakfast they offer grab and go pastries along with entrees like the Savanna Platter (your standard eggs, potatoes, bacon, and sausage), a Bacon and Gruyere Quiche, and French Toast Bread Pudding.

For lunch and dinner, The Mara has standard offerings like burgers and chicken strips. But they also have unique dishes like an Oak-Grilled Chicken Bowl, a Tamarind Barbecue Pork Sandwich, and a Chermoula-Spiced Shrimp Bowl.

Also, The Mara is another place to get Zebra Domes! You can find them in the grab and go dessert fridge. They also have the popular Nyala Brownie here, which is a brownie with peanut butter and vanilla buttercream.

One note about The Mara: I found the service a little confusing. Unlike other some other Quick Service restaurants (like, for example, the food court at POP Century), we ordered at the register and then were given a number to take to our table even though it *looks* like there are counters where you pick up food. However, if you want something like pastries or a dessert out of the fridge, you can go up and get that and then take it to the register.

Animal Kingdom Lodge Bars and Lounges

Cape town lounge and wine bar.

The Cape Town Lounge and Wine Bar is located just inside the restaurant Jiko – The Cooking Place. It’s a small place, but perfect for grabbing a drink if you are waiting for your table at Jiko.

Their menu features a wide variety of South African wines, but they also have specialty cocktails, beers, and after-dinner drinks. You should also be able to order from the Jiko menu here.

Victoria Falls Lounge

Victoria Falls Lounge is the main bar at Jambo House. It’s located just above Boma (like, it overlooks the restaurant) and there is plenty of seating either at the bar or in more comfortable lounge chairs.

At Victoria Falls you can get specialty cocktails, beers, Scotch, and South African wines. From 5:00 to 10:00 p.m. they also serve a limited menu that includes olives and nuts, bread with goat cheese dip, and a burger.

Uzima Springs Pool Bar

The Uzima Springs Pool Bar is located at the Uzima Springs pool at Jambo House.

Here you can get beer, tropical drinks, sangria, specialty non-alcoholic drinks, and more.

Sanaa Lounge

The Sanaa Lounge is located at Sanaa in the Kidani Village section of Animal Kingdom Lodge.

Their menu features specialty cocktails and mocktails as well as beers.

And if you want the Sanaa Indian Style Bread Service but can’t get a reservation at Sanaa (or don’t want a full meal) you CAN get the bread service at the lounge!

Maji Pool Bar

The Maji Pool Bar is located at the Samawati Springs Pool at Kidani Village.

Here you can get pool-side drinks like margaritas, beers, and sangria as well as non-alcoholic smoothies.

They also have a small food menu that includes Spiced Pork Nachos, Short Rib Grilled Cheese, Multigrain Tabbouleh, and more.

Special Dining Experiences at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

Animal Kingdom Lodge used to have several dining experiences. Unfortunately, these still have not returned since the pandemic. We’ll see if they return in the future though or if AKL decides to offer new specialty experiences!

Past Animal Kingdom Lodge dining experiences included Dine with an Animal Specialist at Sanaa, the Wanyama Safari and Dinner, and a Jiko Wine Tasting.

Transportation to Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

If you are staying at another resort and want to dine at Animal Kingdom Lodge, you can take a free Disney Bus from any of the theme parks or Disney Springs to get to Animal Kingdom Lodge.

If you are in your own car and want to drive, you will generally need to show that you have a dining reservation at Animal Kingdom Lodge to be allowed to park there.

One thing to note: Animal Kingdom Lodge is one of the most removed Disney World resorts. It’s going to take a bit of time to get from pretty much any of the theme parks (except Animal Kingdom) to AKL. So if you have a dining reservation and are coming from somewhere else, be sure to give yourself plenty of time to get there!

Disney World may be a theme park, but that doesn’t mean it lacks in dining options. And its resorts have some of the best restaurants on property. This is especially true at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, a deluxe resort that offers unique dishes inspired by Africa and Asia. So if you’re planning a stay at...

Much more than the Lion King: Review of Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge

Summer Hull

When staying at Walt Disney World, you have the luxury of choice when it comes to lodging options. On Disney World property, you can pick from a couple of dozen resorts , not to mention the array of off-site options . Each of the Disney World resorts has its own theme, and one of the most spectacular and unique themes can be found at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge.

This African-themed lodge is nearest to the Disney's Animal Kingdom theme park, but you don't have to leave the hotel's grounds to enjoy the animals roaming the safari. They are viewable from the lobby, the hallways and even many of the rooms. Paying extra for a better view (especially considering how much a trip to Disney World can cost ), is rarely worth it in the realm of family travel, but at Animal Kingdom Lodge, a savanna-view upgrade is absolutely worth consideration.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge opened in 2001 but was expanded a few years later to include a few hundred Disney Vacation Club villas, giving the resort a variety of accommodation types to meet the needs of families of different shapes and sizes. Now, the rooms have undergone a recent renovation, to the extent that an update to this review (originally completed in late 2018), was in order after a March 2020 stay.

Animal Kingdom Lodge is considered a Disney Deluxe Resort (along with iconic properties such as Disney's Contemporary Resort and Disney's Polynesian Village Resort). This means that your stay probably won't be inexpensive, but the investment in a 24/7 magical Disney Resort experience is worth it. Thankfully, there are also some ways to save big on your stay.

FOR NO COST ASSISTANCE WITH PLANNING AND BOOKING YOUR NEXT DISNEY VACATION, CHECK OUT TPG'S DISNEY BOOKING PARTNER, MOUSE COUNSELORS .

You can book Walt Disney World Resort hotels using some types of points (such Citi ThankYou points ). For our late-2018 stay, we paid cash by booking directly with Disney via targeted bounce-back offers that allow you to save up to 35% or so by booking a return trip -- sometimes while you are still on a current trip.

Rack rates for entry-level rooms at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge usually range from about $300 to $500 per night, but Disney sales and discounts can drop that price to under $300 per night certain times of the year.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

A great way save money at Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge is to rent Disney Vacation Club points . Not only does this spare you from the daily parking fee, but, as outlined here , you can pretty easily save 50% on the retail price of the stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge by renting points. There are trade-offs (such as the lack of daily housekeeping), but turning a $2,000 multi-night stay into a $1,000 stay may be worth making your own bed.

We put our stay on my Chase Sapphire Reserve to earn 3x points for the travel charge, but we primarily used discounted Disney gift cards to cover the majority of the charges while at the resort.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

The main reason you might want to avoid a stay at Animal Kingdom Lodge is its location. On our stay, we found it to be the most remote of all of the Walt Disney World Resorts, and it could have easily taken us 45 minutes to get to the Magic Kingdom from the lodge door to door. None of the Disney World parks were within walking distance of this resort, and only the Animal Kingdom was relatively nearby.

I mean, we were still on Disney property, so nothing was terribly far away. However, unlike when staying on the monorail at the Contemporary , nothing was especially close, either. If you stay at Disney's Animal Kingdom, expect to rely heavily on the Disney bus system, your own rental car or the (magical but pricey) Disney Minnie Vans .

Disney World didn't have an elite status program or anything that got us guaranteed early check-in (or late checkout), so I always assumed that the room wouldn't be ready until the stated time. In this case, it often means 3 p.m. check-in for the traditional hotel rooms in the lodge and 4 p.m. for the deluxe villa-style accommodations you would probably be renting with Disney Vacation Club points.

We arrived at the lodge a little before 1 p.m. and fully expected to wait a few hours for a room, but it was ready for us upon arrival.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

On other Disney trips, we have loved the added convenience of a Disney Club-level room for ready-to-eat breakfast, upgraded service and included simple dinners and evening snacks, but none were available for booking on our dates online, since we booked pretty close to our travel dates. So I inquired at check-in if a Club Level upgrade was possible. The good news was that it was available, but at a staggering charge of $400 additional per day. We politely (and quickly) passed on that option. Had the upgrade been $150 per day or less, our family would have likely said yes.

At check-in, we were also given an itinerary of the on-site entertainment and cultural activities, of which there were many — more than I've seen at any other Disney Resort.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

There were two separate villages at Animal Kingdom Lodge: the original Jambo House and the Kidani Village that was added later and made up of DVC villas. We spent the entirety of this stay in the Jambo House and were assigned a savanna-view room on the second level, about as far down the hallway away from the lobby and pool as possible.

The lobby was on the third level, which meant taking an elevator down to the second level. This resort is massive, with well over 1,000 rooms and villas, so expect to do some walking. We brought the stroller into the resort simply because the walk to the room in the evenings with a tired 3-year-old was very far.

Our room was around 350 square feet with two queen beds, a small table, TV and, most importantly, a balcony with a view of the zebras and giraffes and more.

Renovated rooms in 2020 (Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

The view of the animals was the star of the room and the primary reason to stay at this resort. My tween was totally overwhelmed with happiness watching the animals from the room.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

If you love the idea of waking up to drink coffee and view animals on the savanna from your private balcony, then book the room with a view. We watched the animals for hours. These were real animals, not animatronics, so they roamed different parts of the savanna at different times of the day and weren't always visible from our room.

(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

Other than the view, the room was totally fine for a Disney property, but not over-the-top spectacular. We appreciated the two queen beds ( instead of the doubles found in some Disney rooms ) and the African theme was carried throughout, though in 2020 the carpeting, mock-mosquito netting and some of the older decor have been thankfully retired.

(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

The bathroom has a double vanity separate from the shower area. We did have issues with both the toilet and phone during our 2018 stay, as both required maintenance. At the time, this made calling down for our $33-per-day car valet impossible, but service was very efficient even without the call-ahead option. These issues did not repeat on the 2020 stay.

Food and beverage

Animal Kingdom Lodge had some of the best dining available at Disney World . Many of the restaurants have an African theme, which I personally consider great news, but your experience traveling with more narrow eaters may vary.

Boma — Flavors of Africa is the breakfast and dinner restaurant located in Jambo.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

It's an all-you-care-to-eat restaurant, and while there were no characters here (unlike at many similar Disney restaurants), it simply doesn't need them. The food and surroundings stood alone quite nicely.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

For breakfast, there were both African and traditional American favorites: corned-beef hash, sweet plantains, goat-cheese scrambled eggs, bread pudding, bacon and even Simba waffles.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

The house juice, coffee and service were also well above average at this pricey but delicious restaurant. Breakfast for two adults and two kids rang in around $100, so expect dinner to be more than that.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

For a less expensive on-site dining option, there was Mara, just out back off the Jambo lobby. Mara had hot items such as fried eggs, ham-and-cheese sandwiches and Mickey waffles, cheeseburgers and flatbread, as well as grab-and-go drinks, snacks and muffins.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

On a longer stay, or if you just really like tea, coffee or soda, you may want to spend $19.99 for the refillable mug that you could fill up in this grab-and-go restaurant. You could also pick up a bottle of wine for some animal watching on your patio.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

For a nice dinner, there's Jiko — The Cooking Place and Sanaa. While I've still yet to try Sanaa, I had appetizers and a wine tasting at Jiko on my most recent visit to Animal Kingdom Lodge. I was able to walk in to an open seat at the bar shortly after the restaurant opened for the evening and from the service to the food itself, the experience was fantastic.

(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

The $19 'Tour of Africa' appetizer recommended by the server included sausage, honeyed goat cheese, pimento spread, house-made hummus, Egyptian fatir bread and more. It was -- worth it.

(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

The wine tasting, consisting of three South African wines, was also quite a lot of fun. Jiko has a couple of different wine tastings you can choose from, depending on what you'd like to try.

(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

I've also tried out room service at Animal Kingdom Lodge, ordering two kid meals for the littles and two glasses of wine for the bigs. After a long day in the parks, it was fantastic to have dinner and drinks appear at our room.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

The animals are king of the jungle at Animal Kingdom Lodge, but the resort had much more going on than "just" a savanna.

(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

First, let's talk about the African drumming that was going on when we walked in for our 2018 stay. It set the tone, and the women who were drumming were excellent at getting the kids involved in making music. We encountered the drumming around the resort multiple times per day on our stay.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

Other free activities available on site during our stay were African face painting, talks with a savanna guide, access to African cultural experts, wildlife-themed games, the Primal Parade, night-vision animal viewing, cookie decorating and a daily culinary tour that allowed you to tour and sample food from the on-site restaurants. Again, these activities are all free. My biggest regret from this trip was that we didn't have more downtime at the resort to try out all of the available tours, talks and other options.

On-site amenities included one of the largest pools at a Disney World resort, on the Jambo portion of the resort. There was also a pool with small waterslides and a kids play area on the Kidani side of the village, though we didn't make it over there during our stay.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

The Jambo pool had a zero-entry section, a medium-sized waterslide and attentive Disney lifeguards.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

If your family was in search of some drier fun, there was a nearby playground to burn off steam while you waited for dinner, since they will text you when your table is ready.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

A few steps away from the playground was a spot to enjoy on-site flamingos.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

There was also an above-average arcade and Simba's Activity Center. This spot used to be known as Simba's Clubhouse, a kids club that provided childcare. In 2018 it became an activity center where children need parental supervision, but can play and make African-themed crafts for a small fee.

animal kingdom lodge safari dinner cost

Like at all Disney Resorts, staying at Animal Kingdom Lodge provides included access to the Magical Express Bus to and from the Orlando airport, as well as complimentary bus transportation around the Walt Disney World Resort.

Overall impression

Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge is not a cartoon version of Africa. It's not "The Lion King" and "Hakuna Matata" at every turn -- you'll actually find those rooms at Disney's Art of Animation . This is a breathtakingly detailed property that is a joy to inhabit for a few days. The amount of real African art, the emphasis on knowledgeable cultural guides and local experts, and the way that they engage guests in learning about a place many have never seen is nothing short of impressive.

(Photo by Summer Hull/The Points Guy)

While renting Disney Vacation Club points or hunting for deals can make this one of the more affordable Disney Deluxe Resorts, it will still be an investment in the experience of staying here, so make time to actually enjoy the unique on-site amenities, meals and resources. Choosing this resort means you are isolating yourself from much of Disney World, since no park is within walking distance. But if a taste of African culture, watching animals on the savannah and learning a thing or two on your vacation sounds good, then Animal Kingdom Lodge should be the site of your next Disney World vacation.
