David Rollo appointed Asian Tour Chief Operating Officer

By Matt Smith The Asian Tour is continuing its quiet revolution with the appointment of David Rollo as Chief Operating Officer (COO).

Rollo has worked very closely with the Asian Tour over the past decade in his various roles at IMG and begins his new position in May.

He joined IMG in Australia in 2000 and since 2016 has been based in Singapore as Vice President-Golf Events and Clients. He has also worked with the PGA Tour, Ladies European Tour and PGA Tour of Australasia.

“David is an immensely experienced and well-respected industry executive who will bring a valuable skillset to the Asian Tour. I look forward to working alongside David where he will play a key role in the ongoing progression of the Asian Tour,” said Cho Minn Thant, CEO and Commissioner, Asian Tour.

“David is a familiar face around the Asian Tour as he has been working closely with the Tour for many years, so we see this as a very natural transition. His move comes at an important time when we are putting in place a strong team capable of looking after the interests of the Tour and its membership.”

Rollo’s key responsibilities will include optimising the Asian Tour’s operations as well as cultivating relationships with stakeholders, governments, federations, and promoters.

“This is a really exciting opportunity to bring over two decades of experience in the golf industry, most of it in this region, to the Asian Tour, during a time when it is undergoing incredible expansion,” said Rollo.

“The Asian Tour has always been very important to me, and I am looking forward to helping them achieve their goals and ambitions.”

Asian Tour Gets $300M Investment From LIV Golf

• The Asian Tour has unveiled The International Series and an increased investment by LIV Golf Investments.
• LIV has invested a total of $300 million in the professional golf tour.

The Asian Tour has unveiled The International Series’ key dates and prize money and an increased investment by LIV Golf Investments, bringing its total funding in the professional golf tour to $300 million. 

LIV is backed by the Public Investment Fund , Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund. Last November, the firm named 1995 PGA Tour Player of the Year Greg Norman as its CEO. 

The same month, LIV made an initial investment of $200 million in the Asian Tour  — one of the single largest investments in the history of pro golf — to support events and prize funds.  

• The International Series will feature 10 events with stops in England, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
• Prize purses for each event will range from $1.5 million to $2 million .
• The series will be part of the Asian Tour for the next decade, creating a 25-event season. 

The Asian Tour continuing to expand its reach follows a 10-year partnership secured in September 2021 with Golf Saudi to incorporate the Saudi International, which had previously been part of the European Tour. 

Doubling Down on Sports

The PIF, which has $480 billion in assets under management, led a $760 million investment in McLaren last July and acquired Newcastle of the Premier League last October for $409 million.

The fund is also reportedly nearing a purchase of Serie A’s Inter Milan for $1 billion .

10 Days in Vietnam From South to North

We enjoyed the Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An legs. Unfortunately on the day we were to fly to Hanoi my wife had a fall and broke her wrist, resulting in surgery and 3 nights in the Pacific Hospital. Hoi An Express were good in rearranging accommodation and internal flight so we managed to fly home on time. On the accident a contributing factor was the aesthetically pleasing but impractical/ dangerous design of the rooms at Almanity resort. Having tried to put us in a loft room (bed up steep stairs and the single bathroom downstairs. We are 70yo!) our "upgrade" was to a nicer single level room but with the bed on a completely unnecessary 30cm high highly polished and creaky wooden "plinth", off which my wife fell at 4.30 am trying to get to the bathroom. Lovely resort, stupid room design. The hotel in HCMC (Eastin) was very nice but it would be preferable to be closer to District 1 given we selected the 5* upgrade.

This tour was action packed and our tour guide Ali was the best The standard of hotels were good and I got to see more of Bali than I would if I organised it myself. Now I've ticked it off I know exactly where to go on my next trip I would recommend ???? Ali made sure we were always having fun and kept the energy up on the longer journeys.. he also made sure to document our trip which was a lovely bonus ! If you are a solo traveller take the jump.. Bali is incredible and I was lucky to be travelling with a lovely set of girls :)

Just finished the Thai Experience tour with Dan. Best experience of my life! Dan brought so much energy and enthusiasm with all things Thai, providing all his fun facts and sharing all his knowledge with us. He ensured we were all up to date with our plans for the day and was always checking in to make sure we were all enjoying ourselves. Could not have asked for a better leader! Accommodation was amazing!!! Floating bungalows were like you were on a different planet, surrounded by such beauty and ending the tour meeting the elephants was magical. To name a couple of highlights… the whole tour was a highlight! Highly recommend Thai Experience to everyone and if you can get Dan as your leader, you are winning!

Sri Lanka One Life Adventures - 12 Days

This was me and my other halfs first tour and we're glad we stumbled across this. It had a great mixture of excursions/ activities as well as some well needed downtime to relax. Our tour guide Sumudu Peiris was amazing, he was very informative and clued up with everything we got up to including referring restaurants, squeezing in extra activities and slightly changing the routine to benefit the groups needs. He was so caring towards every member of the group and definitely went the extra mile to assist in our comfort. overall I feel like we saw a great mixture of SriLankan culture without sacrificing the pleasure of what a holiday would be. I will definitely be recommending this exact tour to friends and family once I get home to tell them all about it. Shout-out to the coach driver and his assistant who were brilliant at getting us to where we needed to go safely and without any issues.

ASIA Announces 'The Heat Of The Moment' July 2024 U.S. Tour

ASIA has announced "The Heat of The Moment Tour" , headlined by ASIA and also featuring FOCUS , Martin Turner (ex- WISHBONE ASH ) and CURVED AIR and MC'd by artist Roger Dean .

The trek will commence on July 3, 2024 and will incorporate 21 dates across the USA and Canada.

The tour has been masterminded by rock music keyboard legend and original ASIA member Geoff Downes ( BUGGLES , YES ).

"Asia" was the biggest selling album of 1982, No. 1 on Billboard for nine weeks and pioneers of the MTV era. Downes 's brand new iteration of ASIA first began to evolve last summer at the concert held in memory of late lead singer, songwriter and bassist John Wetton ( KING CRIMSON , ROXY MUSIC , URIAH HEEP , WISHBONE ASH , UK , ASIA , JOHN WETTON BAND , ICON ). Downes invited old friend John Mitchell ( IT BITES , FROST, LONELY ROBOT , KINO , JOHN WETTON BAND , ICON ) and newcomer Harry Whitley to join him on stage to celebrate Wetton 's life by performing some of the classic ASIA hits. Such was the uproarious reception to their set, that Downes wondered if something magical was beginning to take shape.

"And so it was that the John Wetton tribute last August really reminded me how much ASIA 's music belongs on the stage," Geoff said. "The response to it all was literally…spine-tingling."

Downes 's new-look ASIA will once again feature Mitchell on guitars and Whitley on lead vocal and bass. The quartet will be made complete by the addition of Virgil Donati ( UK , SOUTHERN SONS , STEVE VAI , ALLAN HOLDSWORTH ) on drums.

Downes continues: "With the addition of Virgil Donati and John Mitchell , two of the finest musicians in the world in their respective classes, this is almost going full circle bearing in mind their previous close collaborations with John W . Completing this circle is also the amazing Harry Whitley who absolutely floored the audience with his incredible vocal interpretation of the ASIA songs that John W and I so lovingly wrote over the years."

The tour will also feature sets from other classic acts FOCUS , Turner and CURVED AIR . All three support acts boast their founder bandleaders and have deservedly attained the status of legend.

FOCUS will release a brand new studio album later in 2024. Led by the indomitable Sir Thijs Van Leer , it features original 1970s drummer Pierre Van Der Linden , plus the virtuoso talents of Menno Gootjes on guitar and Udo Pannekeet on bass.

Martin Turner was lead vocalist, bassist, founding member and creative force behind 1970s rock music behemoth WISHBONE ASH , best known for such classic albums as "Argus" and "Pilgrimage" .

Formed in 1970, CURVED AIR are one of the founders of progressive rock and a retrospective collection of their most influential and ground-breaking material is currently in the planning stages. Sonja Kristina (vocals) and Kirby Gregory (guitar) will treat audiences to an acoustic set featuring some of the band's most memorable musical moments. They will be joined by violinist Grzegorz Gadziomski .

Each performance on the tour will be MC'd by legendary artist Roger Dean . For so many, Dean 's artwork is synonymous with the music of the time and stands to represent the very best of British rock music.

The final word goes to Geoff Downes : "I am convinced that John 's [ Wetton ] spirit is with us as we set out on this new adventure. After all, it is the Year Of The Dragon — just as it was in 1982, when we released our first ASIA album. It's as though it was meant to be. Looking forward to seeing you there, my friends — bring it on!”

Asia Announces The Heat Of The Moment Tour in 2024

E nglish rockers Asia are getting the gang back together (with some new faces) for a summer tour of the US and Canada! According to a press release for the tour, OG Asia member Geoff Downes “masterminded” the tour after the successful reunion concert held in memory of the band’s late singer and bassist John Wetton.

“And so it was that the John Wetton tribute last August really reminded me how much Asia’s music belongs on the stage,” said Downes. “The response to it all was literally…spine-tingling.”

The tour will feature Downes, John Mitchell on guitar, Harry Whitley on vocals and bass, and Virgil Donati on drums. The band will bring along some killer supporting acts as well, including Focus, Curved Air, and Martin Turner.

The Asia 2024 Tour will begin on July 3 at Ridgefield Playhouse in Ridgefield, Connecticut. The tour will close on July 31 at The Pabst Theater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Asia to bring 'Heat of the Moment' tour to American Music Theatre

Rock group Asia will perform in Lancaster this summer.

The band is making a stop at the American Music Theatre at 7 p.m. on July 14 as part of "The Heat of the Moment Tour."

Original Asia member and keyboardist Geoff Downes will be joined by John Mitchell on guitar, Harry Whitley on lead vocal and bass, and Virgil Donati on drums.

They will celebrate the life of late lead singer John Wetton by performing some of the classic Asia hits.

The original group's debut album, "Asia," was the top album in the U.S. in 1982. It included the band's biggest heat, "Heat of the Moment."

The tour will also feature sets from other classic acts: Focus, Martin Turner ex Wishbone Ash and Curved Air.

Each performance on the tour will be MC'd by legendary artist Roger Dean.
