Getting to Bacardi Distillery

Driving there: If you have a rental car and prefer to drive, take PR-22 west out of San Juan for about 3 miles to the Cantaño exit, Road 165.  Drive approximately 2 more miles (you’ll see the plant in the distance off to the right) and turn right at the Intersection with Road 888, at the Bay View Industrial Park in Cantaño.  Turn left at the Bacardi entrance and continue for approximately 1/2 mile to the visitor parking lot.

Taxis to Casa Bacardi Rum Distillery:   There are plenty of taxis in the tourist areas of San Juan, it is about a 25-minute ride.  Always ask the price and agree upon it before getting into the taxi.

Ferry from Old San Juan –  You may take the ferry from Old San Juan to Cataño, it is a small ferry boat mostly used by business commuters and is low cost.  After arriving in Cataño, there should be taxi drivers at the ferry terminal that will take you to Casa Bacardi.  Be advised that at times the ferry may be late or unreliable depending on weather, boat mechanical conditions, and availability.  We recommend you buy the tickets in advance and arrive at least an hour in advance, so you can double-check if the ferry is running on time, if you encounter any issues, you will still have the option to take a taxi to Casa Bacardi.  We recommend you take a taxi to avoid any inconvenience.   More information on the Cataño / Old San Juan ferry

The Bacardi Distillery Tour in Puerto Rico

Serge Melki / Wikimedia Commons / CC BY 2.0

You don't need to be a fan of rum to enjoy touring Casa Bacardi in Puerto Rico , the largest rum distillery in the world . With three tour options, you can learn all about the history of the Bacardi family, learn how to taste rum, and even take a cocktail-making class.

Bacardi History

Bacardi has been conducting tours since 1962, an almost 50-year tradition of showing visitors their factory. Bacardi's founder was Don Facundo Bacardí Massó, a Spaniard who emigrated to Cuba in 1830. He and brother José learned to filter rum through charcoal to remove impurities and age it in oak barrels to give it its smoothness.

Facundo's son, Emilio, was a politician, author, and eventually the mayor of Santiago de Cuba, but it was his brother-in-law, Enrique Schueg, who was the architect of Bacardi's international growth. Schueg began rum production in Puerto Rico in the 1930s.

Today, Bacardi continues to be a family business, now in its fifth generation. They continue to be, as Enrique labeled the spirit, "The Kings of Rum."

The Showroom and Secrets

Perhaps the most entertaining part of the tour is the interactive exhibit room where you'll find a recreation of Bacardi's first distillery, heirlooms, and photos from the past, and rum displays that let you sniff your way through different varieties and blends of the spirit.

You'll also learn some of the steps that go into making rum: the two types of fermentation, the best types of rum for sipping vs. mixing, and even what Bacardi does with the byproducts of rum production.

How to Book a Tour

There are many tour companies that sell tours to Casa Bacardi and for cruisers in San Juan for the day, this is one of the most popular excursions. Note that if there is a cruise ship in town the day you intend to visit the distillery, you might be run into some crowds. Many tour companies will also combine the distillery visit with a day tour of the city, so that could be a good option if you're short on time.

It's also possible to book directly on the Bacardi website , where you'll have the choice of three different tour types.

  • The Historical Tour is a 45 minute tour of the visitor center and includes a welcome cocktail at the Bat Bar. This is the most basic tour and best for those who are just looking for quick look-see at Casa Bacardi.
  • The Rum Tasting Tour lasts 75 minutes and includes a welcome cocktail and a guided tasting of six different kinds of rum.
  • The Mixology Class includes a welcome cocktail, plus the three cocktails you will learn how to make yourself in the class. The class lasts approximately 75 minutes.

Bottle Your Own Bacardi

Casa Bacardi also offers the opportunity to purchase and bottle your own bottle of rum with a personal engraving. The experience includes a bottle of Bacardi's Special Reserve Rum, which can only be purchased at the Puerto Rico distillery, a nice box to store your bottle, and a photo of you and your bottle in front of the barrel you poured it from. The most fun part is sealing the bottle with Bacardi's signature red wax.

Casa Bacardi Rum Tour in San Juan, Puerto Rico

Touring a rum distillery is a popular, fun, and authentic experience for tourists visiting Puerto Rico. A key export with a rich cultural history dating back centuries to the time of colonial sugarcane plantations, if you consume rum in your cocktail, chances are it originated somewhere on the island. One of the largest producers of rum in terms of sales volume and brand recognition, Bacardí, is headquartered approximately 20 minutes from the historic La Perla district in downtown San Juan.

Open to the public for tours, we recently visited Casa Bacardí to learn more about the delicious liquor that inspired the creation of so many tropical drinks.

On this tour, guests stay in the trolley as it passes by many of the buildings and structures on the campus.

  • Ragoozie 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great San Juan Experience What a wonderful tour - the bus was spacious and roomy and was easily accessible. The tour lasted just under 3 hours, and covered a lot of historically significant areas in San Juan. Our tour guide Hector was knowledgeable, and gave us not only a historical perspective of what we saw, but a locals perspective as well. He was very interesting to listen to, and gave great facts and interesting stories. If you want a very interesting and interactive tour. this is a must!! Read more Written April 30, 2024
  • V2963YWnorag 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles So much fun! This tour was great! Adriana and Hector were super friendly and made the whole experience a lot of fun. It is a reasonably challenging hike with lots of climbing rocks and walking through slippery and muddy paths, so having hiking boots was a huge help! We stopped for a late lunch on the way back that was excellent as well. I would definitely recommend for anyone on the adventurous side! Read more Written April 26, 2024
  • drenar2022 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles El Yunque Rainforest 1/2 day tour Frankie was an amazingly enthusiastic tour guide. His knowledge of the area, historical information and understanding of the rain forest was awesome. He called us all familia and made everyone feel comfortable. Truly worth the trip without having to hike for hours to see the beauty it has to offer. Even a little rain couldn't dampen the trip. Read more Written April 21, 2024
  • Exploration423918 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Wonderful Introduction to El Yunque Tour was incredible and comprehensive. I would recommend to anyone coming to the forest for the first time. • Destination448415 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Francisco is awesome!! Our tour guide was the best! He was so friendly and knowledgeable. He talked to us a lot but never made that annoying. • ticia-bullion 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best trip EVER! We actually went March 2020 (but that date wasn't available). The El Yunque Rainforest excursion was by far the BEST excursion we've ever done. We loved it so much we were hoping it would be available on a Carnival Cruise so we could take our kids but we were disappointed to find out it was not available. The hiking through the rainforest, jumping off cliffs, and sliding down rocks were SO much fun! The Bio Bay Kayaking was a little less to be desired. Although fun, it wasn't dark enough to fully appreciate the bioluminescence ... we all had to gather together and put a tarp over our heads. All in all both were fun excursions but the rainforest was definitely a 10/10 highly recommend! Read more Written April 18, 2024
  • U645HSjoelf 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Well organized trip, knowledgeable guide, underwhelming bio-luminescent experience The tour was well organized, they called me to confirm pickup location and pickup was on time. The guide was knowledgeable and friendly. They provided us with dinner which was good (mostly fried chicken/fish and other fried foods). Going in the bay water was nice and refreshing. My only issue was with the bio-luminescent bay experience itself. It just seemed... underwhelming. Yeah you could see the water light up a little bit when moving around in total darkness, but I just felt like for the time and money, and the fact that this was the selling point of the event, it didn't feel like it was all that impressive. That's not really the fault of the of Bespoke Lifestyle Management, but I don't know that I would recommend this to others on account of that experience. Read more Written April 15, 2024
  • 32madisonb 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Best Tour Ever! An amazing crew (George, Luis, Mitchell[sp?]) led our group through El Yunque. I felt extraordinarily safe because of their expertise, but also because we were the only group wearing helmets! When sliding down natural water slides, jumping off cliffs, and rope swinging into the water, protective equipment gave me the confidence to go 100% and make the most of my experience. George’s enthusiasm and knowledge made the road trip to El Yunque a blast, while he shared facts about Puerto Rico and notable sites as we passed them. On the hike, it was no different, as he pointed out native flora and fauna and shared the history of the rain forest with us. And he and his crew were great hype men when it came time to take a leap into the water! I could not have asked for a better tour! Thank you, Bespoke! Read more Written April 15, 2024

Some of the trails were a little difficult for me but Adriana our guide was always watching out for our group. As long as we listened to her, we did well. She was charming and quite knowledgeable about the rainforest. If was worth the experience. Read more Written April 12, 2024
  • dmkm53 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Jumping off the cliffs and swinging out on the rope is worth the hike Not sure where to start. All 10 of us agreed this was the favorite excursion ever. Our tour guide, Jason, was the best. We did the Off the Beaten Path and it was fantastic. It rained a little the day we went, but we knew we were in a rain forest so no one cared. We were surprised about the "muddy experience" in getting to the waterfall, but we embraced it and it turned out to be one of our favorite hikes. Jumping off the cliffs was such fun and even the outdoorsy 70 year olds in our group loved it. Read more Written April 12, 2024

  • 975brookel 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Don’t hesitate. It’s worth it. This trip is NOT to be missed. My family and I had the distinct pleasure of spending the day with Hector. He was funny and kind, patient with the kids and so knowledgeable! The trip was hands down our favorite part of our week in Puerto Rico. We had great coffee on the trip and great food at a beachside restaurant before heading to the boat. I was nervous about my mobility (sprained ankle) but Hector made sure I could get on and off the boat to enjoy every moment with my boys. The timing for the bio bay was perfect. And although it’s impossible to take good pictures of the experience, the boys cannot stop talking about their superhero experience. It’s better than we expected and we got such a long time there too! This trip is not to be missed and so far superior to the kayaks. The laughter and fantastic playlist made the whole day one of a kind. Hector made us feel like familia, and we will be sure to request him next time we come back. Read more Written April 8, 2024
  • CTscan16 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Awesome experience My husband and I had a blast on our excursion to El Yunque. Our tour guides, Felix, Elias, and Mitchell were the best! They made us feel safe by explaining how the tour would work, safety precautions, and how to have the most fun on our tour. We hiked through the rainforest and then climbed the rocks to do some cliff jumping, water sliding, and rope swinging. We had a great time and would recommend it to anyone who is physically able to climb rocks! It took a lot of effort and was slippery so you had to pay attention. Wear old sneakers and eat a good breakfast before going. Read more Written April 8, 2024
  • angelagN8988NF 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Exhilorating, once-in-a-lifetime experience Incredible, one-of-a-kind experience. Kayaking at night, through a mangrove to see this rare bioluminescent phenomenon definitely checks a box off the bucket list! We had the good fortune of going out on a dark night shortly after a new moon, so the bioluminescent life was easier to see - glowing as we paddled through the darker parts, and even as we touched or splashed the water. I do have a list of caveats to offer...one, this is NOT a good moment for first-time kayakers. Paddling in the dark in a very crowded place can be scary and dangerous. If you are taking younger children, it would be good to have them understand the basic concept of paddling BEFORE you get out there for this (or be prepared to paddle hard yourself). All kayaks are doubles - if you have an odd number of participants, be prepared to have someone partner off with someone else. Due to the popular nature of this event, it is very CROWDED - not just with your own tour group, but with simultaneous others operating at the same time. This can be especially tricky when you are navigating the narrow channels - take care! All that being said, the crew were INCREDIBLY helpful on this trip. My daughter and I got extra special assistance (we were not in good sync for a while) to pull us through, as well as my inlaws (who had issues with one of their seats). We paddled 1.5 miles out and 1.5 miles back - keep in mind the distance for the abilities of your participants. I would not recommend trying to photograph as you go (the crew will take a group photo AND gets shots on the water for you). There is way too much going on in the water - you need to focus on (A.) paddling (staying mindful of those around you) and (B.) observing the phenomenon. Also, you WILL get wet so follow the tips about bringing a change of clothes! Read more Written April 7, 2024

Bacardi Rum Factory Legacy Tour

5/22- Bacardi has restarted their tours by reservation only.

Bacardi Rum Factory

If you are a rum fan, you must a trip to Bacardi Rum Distillery to do the Legacy tour . This tour is more of a tour about Bacardi and how they make rum at the factory, but not a factory tour. But it is generally entertaining.

Two things before we start:

  • – it is freezing inside the tour building – I was happy to have a sweater with me!
  • – bring the e-mail addresses of friends so you can send them a video e-card from the tour.

This is a run down of the tour: When we got to the Bacardi gate, we said we wanted to take the tour and the guard gives you directions to the parking area.

After parking, we walked into an open-air pavilion — with the bar and chairs and tables set up. We stopped at the desk to the left and checked in for the tour we wanted. They gave us a Bacardi “coin” that you can keep or trade in at the bar to fill your glass with a welcome drink. (Cuba Libre, Daquari, or Bacardi Sunrise.) We got there early to have or drink before the tour, but no drinks are allowed on the tour, so drink fast — or wait and have the drinks after the tour.

Our tour was called ontime The tram driver talks a little about the company and the buildings and sculptures you see on the way to the tour building. It is not the actual factory, just a tour building. The tour is 45 mins of a glitzy, informative, entertaining and delicious commercial for Bacardi.

They start with some history of sugar cane in the Caribbean and the origins of rum making. Then there is a nice movie about the Bacardi family history, and the Bacardi rum making process. I love the music in that movie!

Next you go into a reproduction of the original factory and the guide tells you how the rum was made and shows you how it is stored in burned oak barrels. Then you can look at all sorts of old Bacardi family memorabilia – pictures, original bottles, documents and a section to smell the types of rums.

Then you go into a "bar" where they tell you how to make a few drinks, what Bacardi rums are available and how to use them. And then a sample of Casa BACARDÍ Special Reserve, a fine aged rum that is only available at the factory gift shop.

Then onto a neat section where they display all sorts of old Bacardi drink ads from magazines from the 1940’s to today – kind of cool!

Casa Bacardi

Then right into the gift shop, where they have lot of Bacardi merchandise and some rums that are not available elsewhere. They also have computers available so you can send out a video e-card to friends at home. We made complete fools of ourselves and sent it out so everyone could get a chuckle!. At the end, we walked back to the starting visitors center.

All in all the tour takes about 45 mins and then we chilled out with the drinks for about another half hour, so it is a nice way to spend a half day. No pictures are allowed in some of the inside portion of the tour, but one can have your picture in front of Casa Bacardi! And there is a lovely view of El Morro fort across the water from here.

The Legacy tour is available in English only. By reservation (online) only. Must be 18 years and up allowed. I believe the whole ting is handicapped accessible- contact Bacardi to make sure.

The Legacy tour, which includes the tour, a welcome drink and a taste of the Casa BACARDÍ Special Reserve costs $30. Other tours are available $75 Mixology , $75 Rum Tasting. You can buy tickets online. .

The tours are available 7 days a week. Closed on the Big holidays- 3 Kings Day (1/6), Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Years Day

Allow 2 – 3 hours.
