Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated islands according to their activities and sights, natural attractions and beaches, food, friendliness, and overall value.

Our No. 3 island, Mauritius, is as far-flung as they come, sitting 1,200 miles off the coast of mainland Africa, and more than double that distance from southern India. Mauritius was our top-seeded island after taking first place last year, boasting miles-long stretches of beach and wildlife-sighting opportunities, from the bats at La Vanille Nature Park to the sea turtles swimming among the Mascarene Islands.

Over a thousand miles west of Mauritius, toward mainland Africa, is our second-place island — immediately off the coast of Dar es Salaam. Zanzibar is home to the famed UNESCO World Heritage site of Stone Town, an architectural marvel influenced by Middle Eastern, Indian, African, and European cultures. Africa is the second-largest continent in the world, after Asia. In addition to the mainland, Africa is also surrounded by a plethora of islands, many with their own special set of geographic features, plant and animal species, and mix of cultures. Whether you're looking for a thick jungle, volcanic coastline, idyllic beach, great architecture and history, or just some crystal-clear underwater views, Africa likely has an island that can deliver. Here are nine of the best islands in Africa. 

1. Mauritius

Located off the coast of East Africa, the island nation of Mauritius is comprised of the main island of Mauritius and several other smaller islands. In fact, it has become one of the most popular island destinations in Africa, due to the wide variety of plant and animal species — many of which can only be found here — and overall safety. One the islands’ most famous former residents is the long-extinct dodo bird. Visitors now flock to this lush destination for its idyllic shorelines, plus excellent diving, kitesurfing, and fishing opportunities. The Black River Gorges National Park offers up rainforest hikes and the possibility of spotting flying foxes soaring between the trees. In the towns, architecture buffs will find a unique style that blends influences from the Dutch, English, and French colonization periods, as well as India and Africa.

Vacationers searching for a rugged island paradise should consider Comoros, a small collection of islands off the southeastern coast of Africa. Expect stunning natural beaches with volcanic rock, a rich French and Arab heritage, and a few active volcanoes. High season occurs between May and October, when rains let up and humidity is at its lowest. Wildlife here is spread out among the different islands, though overall, there are nearly 30 native bird species, nesting sea turtles, dolphins that can sometimes be spotted from shore, and even lemurs. Many visitors like to island hop, but getting between the islands can be a bit tricky, and often requires unreliable boat and flight options. However, getting here — at least from Europe — isn’t too hard since there are several flights operating from Paris. 

3. Seychelles

Chances are, you’ve seen the Seychelles’ swoon-worthy beaches — packed with pristine white sand and jaw-dropping emerald waters — on computer screens, cell phone backgrounds, or even just in your dreams. It’s easy to see why this 115-island paradise is an African island hot spot. The crystal-clear water makes for superb snorkeling and diving conditions, which is a huge draw, especially for those hoping to see blacktip reef sharks, sailfish, sea turtles, rays, and over 1,000 types of fish. A few notable endemic land animals include the Aldabra giant tortoise and tons of beautiful birds. Conservation is a huge priority here, so please pack reef-safe sunscreen, if you plan to go into the water, and tread lightly on hikes. For a bit of local flavor, add a side of shark chutney (a condiment made with fried onions, lime, mashed-up boiled shark, and juice from a local tree) to your curry.

Windier winter months are great for wind-based water sports, while folks hoping to spot nesting sea turtles should come during the hot days of summer. Fishing, snorkeling, and ATV tours are also popular activities on the island.

First up… Let’s start with the largest island of Africa:

➤ 1 | Madagascar

• Language: Malagasy, French • Known for: lemurs, megadiversity, fine chocolate

Madagascar , Africa’s largest island , sits about 1,194 km off the nearest point of the coast of Mozambique. This massive island in the Indian Ocean, separated from the African continent by the Mozambique Channel, is known for its unique biodiversity, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture .

The population of Madagascar, the Malagasy, is primarily made up of 18 ethnic groups . The largest group is the Merina people, who live in the central highlands. 

The Malagasy people have a rich culture that’s influenced by their African and Asian ancestry, especially Indonesian. Traditional practices, including ancestor worship and ceremonies, are still common in many parts of the country.

Malagasy cuisine is a highlight for many visitors here, with its strong African, Asian, and European influences. Rice is a staple, and is typically served with various stews or curries made with meat or fish. 

Other popular dishes include zebu (a type of cattle) meat, spiny lobster, and street food like samosas and fritters. Don’t be afraid of the street food! Once you’ve tried it, you might not want to eat anything else.

Madagascar, the fourth largest island in the world , is home to a variety of absolutely unique wildlife . The island is most well-known for its over 111 species of lemurs. These primates, only found in this country, can be spotted in many places in the wild. 

Take a hike through Ranomafana National Park, or the many other parks and reserves on the island. Don’t forget to look up! 

Other iconic native animals include the fossa, a type of carnivore that looks a bit like a large cat, chameleons, and a wide variety of bird species. Many people travel to Madagascar just for its incredible biodiversity and to see its wildlife up close.

A favourite way to experience the best of Madagascar is to enjoy a few of its many outdoor activities. These include hiking through national parks and nature reserves, strolling down the iconic Baobab Alley, visiting pristine beaches, and snorkelling or scuba diving in the crystal-clear waters surrounding the island. 

The small African island of Nosy Be, on the northwest coast of Madagascar, has some of the most breathtaking beaches. A favourite is Andilana, on the northern tip of Nosy Be. Whether you’re there to dive, snorkel, or lie in the sun like a vegetable, you’ll never find a more idyllic place for it.

Adventurers can also explore the caves and underground rivers in the limestone formations in the western part of the country. These stunning landscapes are fascinating to see, and even more so to hike through. Tsingy de Bemaraha National Park is an otherworldly example of these limestone structures.

In addition, you can experience Madagascar’s rich history by visiting the ancient ruins and colonial-era architecture. Explore cities like Antananarivo and the former pirate stronghold of Nosy Boraha. 

Yes, Madagascar was a perfect safe hideout for pirates. For a time in the 1700s there were few laws on the island. With the sheltered harbour and many East Indies trade routes making their way through the waters, many set up shop here.

There’s actually a pretty little pirate cemetery on the tiny island of Ile Saint-Marie, off Madagascar’s west coast. 

Madagascar really is a treasure trove of cultural and natural wonders . Its rich history, amazing biodiversity earn it a place on any bucket list. Not forgetting those lemurs!

➤ 2 | São Tomé and Príncipe

    • Language: Portuguese     • Known for: unspoiled nature and jungle adventure

South down the West African coast is the twin island country of São Tomé and Príncipe . It is Africa’s second smallest country, both in area and population. These lush, green edens sit on the equator, floating off the coast of Gabon in the Gulf of Guinea . 

This Central Africa island nation is actually comprised of two archipelagos, meaning that each of the two main islands, São Tomé and Príncipe, has its own group of small rocky islets that include Rôlas, Caroço, Tinhosas, and Pedras . The vast majority of people live on São Tomé, with only about 5% calling Príncipe home.

On São Tomé and Príncipe you’ll meet the Farros, people who descended from immigrant Europeans, mainly Portuguese, and enslaved West Africans. You’ll find this dynamic fusion of cultures throughout the nation’s music, customs, and cooking .

People travel to these islands of Africa for an authentic, road-less-travelled experience. Rainforest covers the majority of the landscape, and it’s not hard to feel like an explorer discovering new worlds when trekking through them.

Plant and birdlife is plentiful in the forests, and you’re bound to see things you’ve never laid eyes on before. A few of the islands’ birds have no close relatives, such as the São Tomé grosbeak and the Dohrn’s thrush-babbler.

If you’re hoping to come across unique mammals in these islands near Africa, though, you’re bound to be disappointed. Mammals are few, mostly bats and one endemic shrew. 

However, humpback whales do swim in the waters, and the island shores are an important marine-turtle nesting site. In fact, 5 of the 7 endangered species of turtle choose these beaches for their breeding sites.

When you visit São Tomé, you won’t want to miss the pristine Obô National Park, with its dramatic landscapes of waterfalls , forest-covered volcanoes , and the enthralling volcanic rock that is Pico Cão Grande. Whether you’re up for a multi-day trek, or just a 4 or 5 hour hike, you’ll want to get lost and never found in these thick jungles.

You might also choose canoeing through mangrove-lined rivers, snorkelling out in the turquoise bay, or whiling away your afternoons with a leisurely lunch of local seafood and tropical fruits. Does it get any better that this?

➤ 3 | Cape Verde

• Language: Portuguese and Cape Verdean Creole • Known for: the balmy climate, delicious food, and passionate musicians

The island nation of Cape Verde is an archipelago of ten volcanic islands . It sits in the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Senegal in West Africa. These islands off the coast of Africa have a unique culture and history, with both African and European influences .

Cape Verdeans are known for their warm hospitality and love of music . African music plays an important role in the country’s culture, and this island country has its own sound.

Traditional genres like accordion-based Funana and Morna are popular. Morna combines instruments like guitar and accordion with dance and poetry. It’s often compared with the blues of the southern United States.

Cape Verde also has a rich culinary culture, with dishes like cachupa (corn and fish stew) and percebes (goose-necked barnacles) playing starring roles.

The islands off West Africa have a long history with the Portuguese , the islands’ first inhabitants. Over time, they came to be inhabited by the West Africans as well. You’ll find signs of each of these in the islands’ culture, language, architecture, and cuisine. 

The archipelago is also known for its incredible natural surroundings , and each island has its own. In fact, a selection of especially spectacular sights have been dubbed The Seven Natural Wonders of Cape Verde.

These include mountains, beaches, dunes, and landscapes scattered across the islands, each more stunning the next.

Of all the Cape Verdeans, the island of Sal draws the most beach and ocean lovers . If you love to explore the underwater wildlife, you’ll find amazing snorkelling and diving. You might even see the national animal of Cape Verde, the endangered manatee. 

If you want to fly with the wind, Sal has some of the best wind and kite surfing for you. But if you’re looking for less of a tourist experience and more of a real Cape Verde one, head to Brave or Maio.

➤ 4 | Seychelles

• Language: English, French, Seychellois • Known for: stunning beaches, rock climbing adventures, giant tortoises

The smallest African nation of Seychelles is another archipelago, this one consisting of 115 islands . To find them you’ll need to journey to the Indian Ocean off the coast of eastern Africa, 1,600 km from the coast of Kenya.

There are 3 main islands in the Seychelles . Mahé is the largest, most developed, and home to the capital city of Victoria. It’s also where you’ll find the international airport, and so is considered the gateway to these islands off of Africa.

Though it’s the hub for island hopping, Mahé is a fantastic destination on its own. The snorkelling is astounding in the National Marine Parks, Port Launay in particular. 

And if you’d like a closer look at the corals and marine life, the diving is unbelievable . Beau Vallon, on the north Mahé, is highly recommended.

Praslin, 45 km northwest of Mahé, is another main island of the Seychelles. While historically a pirate hangout, these days people go for the beaches, the forests, and the coco de mer . 

The coco de mer, an endemic nut, is actually the largest seed in the world, much like a very large coconut. It can weigh up to 25 kg, and the few shops allowed to sell them need a licence to do so. But they can be sold only for decoration, not as food. It is known especially for its resemblance to the female form.

You’ll want to check out the UNESCO World Heritage Site Vallée de Mai while you’re on Praslin. It’s the large pristine forest of coco de mer palm trees, the unique birdlife, and endemic plants that you don’t want to miss.

In fact, the national bird, the Seychelles Black Parrot, lives only on Praslin, and its highest numbers are found in the Vallée de Mai. In spite of its status as the national bird, the Black Parrot is one of the rarest endemic birds in the country. Have your camera ready in case you spot one!

The third main island of the Seychelles is La Digue. As the smallest of the main islands, La Digue is quieter and more exclusive . Its primary attraction is the exquisite beach L’Anse Source D’Argent, considered by some to be the world’s most beautiful beach .

Between the sapphire blue water, the powder soft sand, and the gorgeous pink granite boulders, you’ll wonder if it’s even real! You can enjoy snorkelling in the balmy waters, soak up the sun, and eat your fill at the nearby restaurants and fruit stands.

The remaining islands near Africa are largely uninhabited, apart from a few exclusive luxury resorts and a dive shop or two.

➤ 5 | Mauritius

• Language: French and English are spoken, though there is no official language • Known for: the Seven-Coloured Earth, luxurious resorts, and bon renversé

These east African islands are found in the Indian Ocean , south of Seychelles and about 1,133 km east of Madagascar. Mauritius is often compared to the Maldives due to its stunning beauty, sandy beaches, and clear blue water. 

In fact, none other than Mark Twain is quoted as saying,

Mauritius was made first and then heaven; and heaven was copied after Mauritius .”  

Mauritius is a small, diverse nation that reflects a rich and interesting mosaic of African, Indian, Chinese, and European influences . While French and English are the main languages spoken , Creole, Hindi, Tamil, and Chinese can be heard as well.

The culture here is characterised by a love of Sega music and of dancing. You’ll also find a fusion of Indian, French, Chinese, and Creole cuisine. A delicacy of this island in Africa is bon renversé, a combination of basmati rice topped with chicken chop suey and an egg sunny-side-up. 

Religion, mainly Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam, is a big part of the culture, too. 

People travel to Mauritius for a variety of reasons, including its breathtaking scenery, ideal climate, and the unique cuisine . The country is also known for its luxurious resorts and world-class spas, making it a popular destination for those looking for a pampering getaways

Mauritius is renowned for its rich history. That history is reflected in the island’s architecture, museums, and cultural landmarks from Africa . The capital city of Port Louis is a bustling cosmopolitan hub and an exciting blend of cultures.

Visitors have a wide range of outdoor activities to choose from . Island favourites like golf, snorkelling and diving are popular. Kiteboarding, windsurfing, kayaking, and all manner of other water sports are offered, too.

If you love the beach , but aren’t up for getting wet, beach volleyball, frisbee, and soccer are great alternatives. The hiking is also excellent on Mauritius. Popular spots are the Black River Gorges National Park, Le Morne Brabant, and the Tamarind Falls . 

At one time, in the early 1600s perhaps, you may have been lucky enough to spot a dodo bird on a hike. These pigeon-like birds were endemic to these islands of west Africa, but the last one was spotted in 1662. 

Another spectacular attraction on this east African island nation is what is known as the Seven Coloured Earth. This is a geological phenomenon found in the Charamel region. It’s a small area of sand dunes that feature a striking range of layered colours, including shades of red, brown, purple, green, blue, and yellow.

The colours are a result of volcanic activity and mineral deposits in the area. Visitors can explore by walking along marked paths that wind through the dunes. Stay as long as you can and observe the shifting of the colours as the angle of the sun changes.

More than just a stunning curiosity, the Seven Coloured Earth is also an important cultural and spiritual site for Mauritians . The area is believed to have healing properties, and visitors can take part in traditional rituals and ceremonies that are meant to cleanse and purify the body and mind.

You also won’t want to miss a tour of a tea plantation while you’re here. The lush green fields and the amazing aroma will have you wanting to curl up among the plants and just breathe it all in.

➤ 6 | Comoros

• Language: French, Arabic, and Cormorian, a Swahili dialect with Arabic influences • Known for: incredible natural beauty, the fragrant plant life such as ylang-ylang

The African island nation of Comoros consists of only 4 islands , all located in between the northern areas of Madagascar and Mozambique. Three of the Comoros islands gained independence from France in 1975, and have since withstood some 20 coups and attempted coups. One, Mahoré, remains a French dependency.

The Comoros of today is a poor country, without a large tourism industry to bolster its economy. However, these islands in Africa are a beautiful destination, home to pretty beaches, beautiful cities, and lovely people .

The main island of the three is Grande Comore, where you’ll find the capital city of Moroni . Apart from the beaches, people visit for the Ancienne Mosquée du Vendredi, the Old Friday Mosque, and to hike the dozens of small mountains.

Trekking up the Karthala volcanic crater is another popular activity on Grande Comore, as is swimming with dolphins and manta rays. 

Anjouan is an island off-the-beaten-path, but is actually no less developed than Grande Comore. It’s definitely worth a visit, especially to explore its small villages, and see the traditional dress still worn by the people there.

The women wear wraps of chiromani, a colourful cotton fabric, along with a shawl called the lesso. They also protect their skin from the sun with a white paste called m’sindanu, made of ground sandalwood. 

Men are much more subdued, with just white embroidered skull caps to add something special to their outfits. Remember – women and men will not appreciate having their picture taken without being asked first.

Moheli is Comoros’ smallest island, but it’s where the ylang-ylang grows, and it has the most wildlife . Not only does it have endemic Livingston bats, it’s also home to imbricated and green turtles. In addition, its waters get seasonal visits from humpback whales from the Antarctic.

You have a chance to contribute to Moheli’s local economy when you stay in bungalows around the island. Proceeds are in turn invested in things like health centres and scholarships. 

➤ 7 | Zanzibar

• Language: English, Swahili, Arabic • Known for: spices, idyllic beaches, diving, and snorkelling  

No, Zanzibar is not an African island nation – it’s actually a part of the east African country of Tanzania . However, no discussion of African islands can be complete without mentioning this African paradise island.

Zanzibar is a collection of over 50 islands off the coast of Africa. They are located about 35 km, or 22 miles, off Tanzania’s coast . The largest island is actually called Unguja, but is commonly referred to as Zanzibar. It’s here that visitors flock, to explore the marine life in the clear blue water, soak up the sun on the unbelievable beaches, or to rest up from an epic Tanzanian safari or Kilimanjaro climb .

But there is much more to Zanzibar than mind-numbingly blissful relaxation. Historic Stone Town, the old section of Zanzibar City, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was chosen for its rich culture and history – some of which are the atrocious and sobering reminders of slavery. 

I encourage you to visit the East Africa Slave Trade Exhibition to lean about this grim period in history.

Not all of the history is so dark. Stone Town is full of beautiful ancient architecture – flavours of the European, Indian, Arabic, and Persian influences the islands have seen over the years, all on a local Swahili foundation. Pay particular attention to the ornate and unique doors that you’ll see on structures all over Stone Town . 

Make a quick stop, too, at the Hamamni Persian Baths for a glimpse at the first public baths of Zanzibar. From there you can stroll through more of Stone Town’s sights, take a tour through the Jozani Natural Forest Reserve, or explore the spice plantations on the island. With any luck, you’ll spot one of the local red colobus monkeys on your journey!

10. Sao Tome and Principe

Sao Tome and Principe is a two-island nation off the Gulf of Guinea in West Africa. It is one of the few island nations in West Africa that attracts huge tourist flow. There are many nearly exclusive beautiful beaches.

Once the world’s leading cocoa producer and still one the best producers of high-quality coffee, this is a place for lovers of these two beverages to enjoy the natural taste from its source. Due to the small population on these two islands, beaches are less populated and thus provide a high level of exclusivity of any given public beach in the world.

Yet, there are still many exclusively private beaches that dot the two islands. There is a smooth blend between the coastal environment and the interiors making it easy for one to seamlessly transition between the two environments. The two islands, especially Principe, are a paradise for bird watchers.

9. Lamu Archipelago

Lamu archipelago is found on the north coast of Kenya . It is famously known as ‘secluded beauty’ due to its highly secluded environment and hidden beaches. Peace, quietude, and tranquility are its famous hallmarks. There are several eyelet islands on the Lamu archipelago.

Lamu is characterized by white sand beaches and clear blue waters of the Indian ocean. Shela village is one of the most famous villages in Lamu. The 700-year-old town of Lamu is characteristically famed for its narrow streets which are impassable for cars.

Donkey rides are common as they are the best means of navigating these narrow streets. Apart from donkeys, canoes and dhows are the other means of transport. Lamu town is home to some of the most ancient historic buildings dating back to almost half a millennia.

It is a mixture of culture involving the Arabs, Africans (Swahili people), and Portuguese. It is also a leading UNESCO World Heritage Site along the east coast of Africa. 1

Elaborately carved wooden doors, inner courtyards, mangrove timber, verandas, etc are the hallmarks of Lamu town. Snorkeling and diving are popular activities along the shores.

8. Nosy Be, Madagascar

Nosy Be is the smallest island of Madagascar archipelago. It is very popular with tourists around the world. It receives visitors all-season, and is not reputed for great beaches, but rather an environment with a high tranquility that allows re-connection with calming nature.

Africa may not always register on the average traveler's radar, but those who visit have the chance to experience the perfect blend of ancient and modern, wild and urban, and East and West. From Cape Town's coastal beauty to Tanzania's game reserves, choosing your adventure on the second-largest continent can be difficult. To help you start planning, U.S. News ranked the best places to visit in Africa based on accessibility, affordability and the variety of things to do, as well as user votes and expert opinions. Mauritius appeals to vacationers in search of a bit of everything. Though its main draws are its powdery sands and luxe beach resorts , this small island nation east of Madagascar also charms visitors with its mix of cultures; friendly locals; lively festivals and tasty teas and rums. After a day of exploring some of the island's nature reserves and soaking up the sun, retreat to one of its premier properties to savor fresh seafood while watching a traditional sega dance performance or the sun set over the Indian Ocean.

Home to cheetahs, elephants, lions, wildebeests, hippos and more, Masai Mara National Reserve is one of Kenya's premier spots to see wildlife. Sign up for a safari to explore this protected area's 373,000-plus acres of rolling grasslands. (Tip: Look for companies with guides certified by the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association.) For an extra dose of adventure, opt for a horseback riding excursion or hot air balloon safari. To increase your chances of spotting the big five (lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffaloes) and other migrating animals, time your visit between July and October during the Great Migration.

Zanzibar offers something for everyone, whether you're in search of beautiful white sand beaches or an unforgettable adventure. After trekking to this Indian Ocean archipelago off the coast of East Africa, you'll instantly feel at ease as you lounge on quiet beaches like Matemwe and Kiwengwa. Next, visit UNESCO World Heritage-listed Stone Town, where you'll find the ruins of a 19th-century palace and a graveyard with ties to Zanzibar's former Arab royals. And no trip would be complete without taking a spice tour in the countryside and exploring Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park. As an added bonus, you'll find this is a surprisingly cheap tropical destination .

A grouping of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean, the Seychelles has long attracted those looking for a truly relaxing, off-the-beaten-path getaway. Spend your days lounging on pristine, crowd-free beaches like Anse Lazio and Anse Source D'Argent, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Or, head deep into the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Vallée de Mai nature reserve to gaze at its unique flora and fauna. Keep in mind that lodging here is expensive (especially at the luxury resorts), so it's best to save up and book in advance.

With numerous hiking trails, miles of dramatic scenery and stunning beaches (including one with wild penguins), this South Africa hub caters to both adventurous and laid-back travelers. Getting to Cape Town won't be cheap, but your dollar will go far once you arrive. Make sure you take the aerial cableway up Table Mountain, visit Nelson Mandela's jail cell on Robben Island and explore the world-renowned Constantia Valley wine region. You'll also want to save time to trek through the Cape of Good Hope, which lies 40 miles south of Cape Town on the southern tip of Africa.

Cairo can be overwhelming, as there's so much to see and do everywhere you turn. From Islamic Cairo's bustling Khan El-Khalili bazaar to the ancient Pyramids of Giza to the picturesque Nile River, you'll be immersed in this Egyptian city's history and culture before long. Though winter offers the most pleasant weather of the year (with daytime temperatures in the 60s and 70s), it's also the busiest season, so consider visiting in spring or fall when room rates are lower, temps are bearable and crowds thin out.

Like other historic Moroccan cities, Marrakech buzzes with life: Performers vie for your attention in Jemaa El Fna (an open-air square in the heart of the Medina of Marrakesh) while vendors hawk aromatic spices, homemade textiles, ornate lanterns and more at the bazaars along the alleyways. When you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, unwind at a hammam, visit the Jardin Majorelle or head to a rooftop bar and relax before retiring to your riad. During your visit, keep an ear out to hear the striking tones of the nearby mosques' calls to prayer.

You'll spot plenty of animals – ranging from lions to rhinos to elephants to giraffes – in this massive game preserve in South Africa. Kruger National Park's network of paved roads makes it easier to navigate than Serengeti, and it tends to be cheaper to visit. However, its popularity (especially from May to October, which are the best months for wildlife viewing) means you're more likely to encounter hordes of visitors during game drives. Consider visiting one of the park's private game reserves for a more exclusive experience, and to ensure lodging, flight and tour availability, you'll likely want to finalize your trip at least a year in advance.

The habitat on the island of Madagascar is unlike any other in the world: Most of the landscape is unspoiled, giving visitors a chance to see animals in their natural environment. Travelers should look out for the country's signature animal: the lemur. Madagascar is home to more than 100 species of these creatures, as well as 11,000-plus plant species, including majestic baobab trees. Some of the best places to see wildlife and Madagascar's geological wonders include Isalo National Park and Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve. Be sure to save some time to island hop to Nosy Be for its world-class beaches.

Despite its small size and landlocked location in southeastern Africa, Malawi draws visitors with its gorgeous lake, diverse wildlife and friendly people. At Lake Malawi, one of the deepest lakes in the world, travelers can enjoy water sports activities like kayaking and sailing, soak up some sun on a white sand beach or dive beneath the lake's surface to look for colorful cichlid fish. The tiny country also features nine national parks and wildlife reserves, making it an excellent less-crowded option for a self-drive or a guided safari. For the best wildlife viewing, arrive during the dry season, which lasts from May to October.

Adventurous travelers who dream of spending their vacation surrounded by nature will love Botswana. A less crowded alternative to nearby safari destinations like South Africa and Tanzania, Botswana has a strong conservation focus and offers ample opportunities to spot rhinos, elephants and more in protected areas like Khama Rhino Sanctuary, Chobe National Park and Moremi Game Reserve, the oldest reserve of the Okavango Delta. Plus, adrenaline junkies can participate in all kinds of heart-pumping activities, including quad biking, mokoro (canoe) safaris and helicopter tours.

Kenya's capital city offers the perfect blend of urban pursuits and natural splendor. With museums highlighting its pre- and post-colonial heritage, bustling street markets and a thriving nightlife scene, Nairobi is a cultural hub. But its proximity to (and preservation of) wildlife is what makes Nairobi one of the world's most unique cities. The city boasts its own national park – Nairobi National Park, whose grassy plains host 100-plus mammal species including black rhinos – as well as wildlife conservation parks such as the Giraffe Centre and Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. Options range from the rugged splendor of  South Africa 's Wild Coast to the paradise islands of the Seychelles and Mauritius . Although this list of our top 12 beach destinations barely scratches the surface, it's a good place to start the trip planning process .

Located in southwest Africa, Namibia is a one-of-a-kind destination that is often overlooked when planning trips to the continent. It shouldn't be. The country is chock-full of adventures and landscapes you won't find anywhere else on the continent, including the Namib Desert and Sossusvlei .

Part of Namib-Naukluft National Park , Sossusvlei is a giant, flat salt pan surrounded by a sea of red and orange sand that has been sculpted into an otherworldly landscape of towering dunes and desolate valleys sprinkled with petrified dead trees. Home to a beautiful stretch of beaches on the Mediterranean Sea, Tunisia is a popular vacation destination for Europeans seeking some winter sun. The island Djerba is a perfect spot to indulge.

Afterwards, venture into the Sahara Desert for more mesmerizing scenery. The desert covers much of Tunisia's interior, but its most stunning section is known as the Grand Erg Oriental . Rising from the plains of the Serengeti, it is a dormant volcano and creates a stunning backdrop for wildlife safaris in the region.

Most people visit Kili to climb to its summit. It is especially popular because the trek involves no rock climbing expertise or mountaineering equipment.

You also won't face the extreme weather challenges of climbing other continents' highest peaks, like Mt. Everest. You will need to be in good shape and adjusted to the altitude. The trek to the top takes a minimum of six days, and you will need to go on a guided excursion.

South Africa's Kruger National Park is one of Africa's oldest conservation areas and a top safari destination on the continent .

This vast park, which actually extends into Mozambique to the east, is home to South Africa's most diverse wildlife population. It is also surrounded by upscale private reserves, like Sabi Sands Game Reserve, which animals can cross into and out of at will.

Kruger is also a safari destination within reach for many different budgets. As a national park, visitors can actually explore Kruger on self-drive safaris and then camp or stay in national park lodges.

Every year, millions of wildebeest and other hoofed animals like zebra and gazelles migrate between Tanzania's Serengeti and the Masai Mara in Kenya in what has become known as the Great Migration. The most dangerous part of this journey is crossing the Mara River , where many of the grazing animals get picked off by hungry lions and other predators.

The crossing usually happens between July and August, but the timing can change with the year. Watching the Great Migration in real time is a dream for many wildlife enthusiasts, who plan safaris to this part of Kenya to coincide with it.

Created about 2.5 million years ago, the Ngorongoro Crater is the largest inactive, unfilled, and unbroken volcanic caldera on the planet. Considered one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World (Victoria Falls is another), it is home to thousands of animals and is a top safari destination in Tanzania.

It is also on one end of the Great Migration route , mentioned above, and during this time of year, massive herds of wildebeests, zebras, and other grazing animals can be seen here.

Guests stay at lodges perched on the edge of the crater's rim and then descend down for day long wildlife drives.

All of the Big 5 African animals (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant, and Cape buffalo) can be seen down here, but one species you won't see on the crater floor are giraffes. This is because they find the rocky descent too difficult, and there are few trees. This lack of trees also makes it very easy to spot wildlife while on safari, including the big cats.

Off the Mozambican coastline in the Indian Ocean, the Bazaruto Archipelago Marine Park is home to a group of islands with some of the more beautiful beaches in Africa .

Bazaruto Island is the main destination and offers a range of accommodations, from budget to luxury. But there are also deserted islands and others that are home to just one hotel or two.

Besides brilliant white-sand beaches backed by coconut palms and sand dunes, these islands are also famous for their excellent diving and snorkeling opportunities. There is a thriving coral reef system protected by the park, and the turquoise water is warm and clear.

Botswana, in southern Africa, is another legendary safari destination.

In the northern portion of the country, the Okavango Delta is a top attraction. This large inland river delta floods during the rainy season and becomes a unique safari experience. That's when you'll get to explore the river in a dugout canoe, paddling past hippos and crocodiles while keeping your eyes peeled for elephants, giraffe, and other animals who come to the river to drink.

The Moremi Game Reserve covers a large section of the Okavango Delta and is where many upscale safari lodges are located. Maun is the gateway town to the delta, and this is a good place to organize more budget-focused canoe and land safaris.

Spanning three countries, Malawi, Mozambique, and Tanzania, Lake Malawi is the third-largest lake on the African continent at 29,600 square kilometers. It's part of the African Great Lake system, and its age is estimated at about one or two million years.

The majority of tourists visit the Malawi side of the lake, which is called Lake Nyasa in Tanzania and Lago Niassa in Mozambique.

One interesting fact about Lake Malawi is that it is home to more kinds of fish than any other lake on Earth ! Needless to say, fishing is very popular here.

You can also swim and snorkel in the warm, clear water, but you'll want to take a short course of a fast-acting antibiotic after doing so to protect yourself from bilharzia, which is found here.

On Kenya's Swahili Coast, Watamu is the perfect town for a beach vacation. The Indian Ocean here is stunning—think turquoise, aquamarine, and emerald hues with sugar-white-sand beaches and an underwater world to explore.

Unlike beaches in South Africa, the water here stays warm enough to swim comfortably all year. And, with near-constant trade wind breezes, it never gets too oppressively hot, and it's also one of the hottest kitesurfing destinations in Africa .

The sunsets are also stellar here, especially when witnessed from the deck at Lichthaus, which has west-facing hammocks, DJs spinning in summer, and a food menu.

Watamu is a small village, and lodging is spread out over a number of miles on the coastline. It is easy to get between places by bodu bodu (a local motorbike taxi that costs around $1 per ride).

The most luxurious place to stay in town is Hemingways Watamu . Right on the beach, it offers accommodation in rooms, suites and residences. The residences are especially luxe.

They have up to two bedrooms, are done-up in gorgeous modern décor, come with full kitchens, and feature walls of windows. Beds are draped in mosquito nets so you can sleep with the windows open to hear the ocean. The food at the house restaurant is also excellent.

Another option, which is very popular with couples and groups of friends (although families are welcome as well), is Temple Point Resort . It also has a beachfront location and is spread across lushly landscaped grounds.

The public spaces here are wonderful, and there is even a room dedicated for remote working. The restaurant serves an international menu with excellent pasta dishes. Accommodation is in charming bungalows with whitewashed décor, and each has a unique look. The on-site dive center can take you swimming with whale sharks or to thriving coral reefs.

While Merzouga is a small village, it is a popular destination for travelers in Morocco . Located in the Sahara Desert, Merzouga is surrounded by enormous sand dunes known as the Erg Chebbi. Anse Lazio is a gorgeous beach with clear water and amazing opportunities for snorkeling. The Vallée de Mai Nature Reserve is a palm forest that is preserved and serves as the home to countless reptiles and birds, including the very rare Seychelles Black Parrot.

Where the Okavango River meets the basin of the Kalahari, you’ll find the Okavango Delta. The delta is breathtaking to behold, and the source of water means that it is almost always surrounded by wildlife. The peak is the tallest in Africa, and the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, making it a bucket-list destination for many travelers. While the very fit can trek to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, there are also other ways to explore the area. There are several shorter, easier hikes around the base of the mountain along with some gorgeous waterfalls and plenty of amazing scenery.

10. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Uganda) [SEE MAP]

If you are interested in seeing rare wildlife, then the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda should definitely be on your itinerary for an African adventure. With a permit from the Uganda Wildlife Authority, you can hike from the two hubs of Buhoma to Nkoringo and kayak on gorgeous lakes. The main attraction, however, is tracking gorillas. The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is one of the best places in the world to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat.

The best known of the many parks located in South Africa is the Kruger National Park, named after former South African President Paul Kruger. It is the most popular destinations in the country, because it is such an exciting city with an ancient history and amazing architecture. The historic district of Marrakech is called the Medina, and its main square is the bustling Djemaa El-Fna, where you can watch snake charmers and acrobats while strolling through shops and snacking on local culinary delights. You can also tour souks, or outdoor markets, and then relax at a local hammam, or spa.

7. Luxor (Egypt) [SEE MAP]

The ancient city of Luxor in Egypt is divided into halves by the Nile River. On the East Bank, you’ll find the famed Luxor Temple as well as unique museums like the Luxor Museum and the Mummification Museum. Across the Nile on the West Bank, you’ll be able to explore both the Valley of the Kings and the Valley of the Queens. The Valley of the Kings is one of the most iconic destinations in Africa, as it served as the burial place of many Egyptian kings.

The nature preserve known as the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is one of Tanzania’s many attractions. The area is named after the Ngorongoro Crater, a volcanic caldera in the center of the preserve. The crater is a highlight, and so is the steep ravine called Oldupai Gorge. St. Croix is also a sanctuary for hundreds of African penguin colonies. You can reach the island via boat charters, but landing restrictions only permit boats to approach.

The best time to visit is from April to May or September to October. The popular attractions on the island include Buck Island Reef National Monument, Rhythms at Rainbow Beach, and Point Udall.

Activities you can enjoy in St. Croix include horseback riding, cooking classes, and renting snorkeling gear.

8. Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

Bazaruto is a beautiful place with lots of different plants and animals. You can see over 2000 kinds of fish there, like dolphins and whales.

Bazaruto is actually a group of six islands off the coast of Vilanculos and Inhassoro and the biggest one is Bazaruto Island.
