Travel & adventure show saw successful new york city debut and announces 2023 dates.

NEW YORK CITY , April 4, 2022 – New Yorkers are ready to travel again as shown by the Travel & Adventure Show which debuted its fifth live event in 2022 in New York on March 18-20 welcoming over 14,000 travel-savvy consumers, over 200 exhibitors, over 250 media attendees and nearly 2,200 trade delegates manning hundreds of exhibits from around the globe. The show gave attendees an opportunity to engage with destination representatives, tour operators and travel companies offering up travel ideas and inspiration as travel rebounds. Attendees were even invited to take advantage of special deals and promotions on the spot to make their dream vacation a reality.

Following on the success of this weekend, Travel & Adventure Shows has officially announced the show will return in 2023 to the Jacob Javits Center from January 27 – 29. The next event promises to be bigger, with more exhibitors, more attendees, and more opportunities to be inspired to travel.

“As the travel industry emerges from perhaps its most challenging years in history, we could not be more excited to have helped lead so many storied travel brands, destinations and suppliers back to a proactive environment,” stated John Golicz, CEO of Unicomm, LLC, the event’s producer. “Our New York debut was our fifth live show in five consecutive weekends, and we were overwhelmed by the reception we received by a very eager crowd of New York travel enthusiasts. We’ve already secured January 27-29 at the Javits to bring the show back even bigger and better with a larger showroom, more exhibitors, speakers and additional interactive opportunities for attendees.”

The New York Travel & Adventure Show kicked off with a Travel Trade Summit on Friday, March 18th which invited travel industry experts, tour operators and travel agents for a day of informative panels, sessions and discussions before an unveiling of the expo floor. Hosted in partnership with Travel Market Report, the Summit offered a myriad of industry-specific content taking place across four separate stages giving attendees a choice of three keynote and eight breakout sessions. A VIP Networking Reception was held on the Show Floor Friday evening, as exhibitors and trade members spent a couple hours discussing ongoing travel plans and trends right on the show floor. Overall, over 500 members of the travel trade and media came to the 1st annual Travel Trade Summit at the New York Travel & Adventure Show.

Then Saturday and Sunday the Show opened to consumers for an exciting two days of travel seminars, exciting trip giveaways and special on-the-spot deals that many consumers took advantage of. Over the course of the two days, roughly 14,000 consumers attended the first ever New York Travel & Adventure Show and for next year’s event the organizers are anticipating even greater numbers as the pandemic recedes and travel reaches new heights.

Show sponsors included Major Sponsor Cruise Planners, The Islands of the Bahamas and Royal Caribbean were supporting sponsors, Croatia National Tourist Board was the event’s featured exhibitor as well as an international destination sponsor for the Travel Trade Summit. The Dominican Republic Ministry of Tourism was also an international DMO sponsor for the Travel Trade Summit, as well as a supporting sponsor of the event. Bronze sponsors for the Travel Trade Summit included the Israel Ministry of Tourism and ProColombia, and Fort Myers Islands, Beaches and Neighborhoods was the official cocktail reception sponsor. The Florida Keys & Key West sponsored the green screen photo booth.

Over 40 live consumer-focused travel seminars allowed what would-be-travelers to re-hone their skills, learn about what has changed in travel since the pandemic, what destinations are in demand and even how to take better travel photographs. Our four dozen speakers filled the four on-floor stages featuring top travel celebrity personalities including: actor, director and award-winning travel writer, Andrew McCarthy; CBS News travel editor and Emmy award-winning investigative reporter, Peter Greenberg; Editorial Director of the Frommer’s Guides, Pauline Frommer; Emmy award-winning host of Samantha Brown’s Places to Love, Samantha Brown; bestselling author of “1,000 Places to See Before You Die,” Patricia Schultz; and “The Points Guy,” Brian Kelly, all spent time discussing the new travel normal in front of hundreds of eager travelers.

“As New Yorkers welcome back tourists to their city, many are also eagerly planning for trips that they’ve put off, so the energy from our attendees was palpable and invigorating. They are ready for their next adventure so what better way to decide where to go next than with the chance to personally discuss their travel plans with the people from destinations from all over the world, all in one place,” said Jonathan Golicz, Vice President of Unicomm, LLC.

Recognizing that while travel is important to people and industries around the world, it is also a privilege and helping people in a fundamental way is the most important thing one can do, Travel & Adventure Shows CEO John Golicz welcomed a representative from the office of the Consulate General of Ukraine in New York to announce that all proceeds from the Travel Trade Summit would be donated to assist the refugees of Ukraine ensuring they receive critical humanitarian assistance.

Max elevation

High altitudes.

Trekking to high altitude (generally this means above 2500 meters) involves additional risk not normally associated with lower-level treks. This is not something that should prevent you from undertaking a trek. However, before embarking on such a holiday, it makes sense to learn about the dangers inherent in trekking at high altitudes and also the ‘golden rules' to prevent Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

TRIP SELECION

For each of our holidays, the maximum altitudes attained are listed on the website and in the heading of the individual Trip Notes. In addition, the altitudes of each camp and each pass are listed in the daily itinerary. You should read the Trip Notes carefully and use your judgment to gauge whether your chosen holiday is suitable for your level of experience. If you have any doubts at all you should contact our office. Our experienced staff is more than happy to talk about altitude-related issues during our holidays.

ACCLIMATIZATION

The human body is capable of adapting to a very wide range of barometric pressures. This adaptation process is known as acclimatization and it does take time. The most important rule is to gain height slowly and it is generally accepted that the maximum safe altitude gain in any one day is 500 meters once above 2500 meters. Where this is not possible, then it is important to have a rest or acclimatization day at the new altitude before gaining further height. In general the maxim ‘climb high and sleep low' applies. It is perfectly acceptable (and even beneficial to your acclimatization) to climb higher than 500 meters above your last camp (for example when crossing a high pass) as long as the increase in sleeping altitude remains within the above rule.

There is a correlation between daily fluid intake and successful acclimatization and you must pay particular attention to hydration during trekking at high altitudes. On treks to 3000 meters and above most people will need to drink between 4 and 6 liters each day to achieve suitable hydration levels and you must adopt a responsible approach to achieving this target.

ACUTE MOUNTAIN SICKNESS

Before embarking on a trek to high altitude it is important that you familiarize yourself with the signs and symptoms of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) and that you report any illness to your tip leader straight away. See the links at the bottom of this page for further reading on AMS.

There are a number of untested herbal remedies which claim to prevent mountain sickness. However, only one drug is currently known to have a useful role in preventing AMS and to be safe for this purpose: acetazolamide (Diamox). We recommend that you carry Diamox in your first aid kit for treks where you spend an extended period above 4000m. Diamox can only be obtained from a medical professional on prescription and it is important that you first consult your own doctor so that you know there are no contra indications with other medicines you may be taking and that you do not have an allergy to acetazolamide. Diamox commonly causes some minor side effects, such as tingling fingers and toes, or a metallic taste in the mouth, but more severe reactions are rare. On trek, the decision whether or not and when, you should take Diamox as with any drug, will rest solely with you. If you intend to take Diamox, you must familiarize yourself with the appropriate dosage and regime prior to coming on the trip. The links at the bottom of this page will provide further information on the use of Diamox as an aid to acclimatization.

Travelling to high altitudes is not something you need to be scared of. Every year thousands of people enjoy the most amazing experiences in the world's greatest mountain ranges. Altitude sickness is entirely preventable if you follow very simple rules and procedures. Please make sure you are aware of these before you travel.

SUMMARY OF DIFFICULTY The hike up to our campsite is a moderate 6 miles and 1400ft of elevation gain. The scramble up to Pyramid Ridge can be steep and difficult, but very adventurous and with just light day packs. Hiking

travel and adventure show new york

Please Note:  Terrain, Elevation Gain and Heights Exposure ratings reflect the section or day of the trip with the maximum difficulty of each. Much of the trip is at easier levels. See the trip itinerary for more detailed information. Backpack Weight ratings are estimates that account for Wildland-provided gear, guest clothing, personal items and a share of group food. By packing light it’s often possible to stay on the lower end of the weight range. Pack weights also decrease during the trip.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Hiking uphill or downhill with a 25-35 lb backpack for 5-7 hours
  • Hiking uphill off trail with a 8-12 lb backpack for 6-8 hours
  • Maintaining balance and footing on moderately rugged terrain
  • Hiking with moderate heights exposure

To show the relative difficulty of our adventure holidays, each trip is graded on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the most challenging. Our simple, colour-coded grade symbol provides an indication of the difficulty of each trip.

Clearly, there are many different factors that contribute to the difficulty of a particular holiday, including, length of day, terrain, type of accommodation, altitude and weather conditions. Since some of these factors are necessarily changeable, any system of grades can only provide a general indication. If you have any questions about the nature of a particular trip or its suitability for you, please read the detailed Trip Notes and if you are still unsure, please do not hesitate to contact us

YELLOW 5 - 7 MODERATE

Suitable for reasonably fit individuals, such as weekend walkers and cyclists. There can be the occasional more difficult day.

RED 08 - 10 TOUGH

Our toughest holidays, involve many long days, often in isolated areas. A high level of fitness and previous wilderness experience is essential.

Travel & Adventure Show readies to welcome travelers back in 2024, launches new show in Phoenix.

NEW YORK, NY – The Travel & Adventure Show Series has concluded its season with their last show having taken place in Dallas April 1-2. America’s Favorite Travel Shows took place in 8 cities including: New York, Chicago, Boston, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Dallas, Denver and Washington D.C. The shows provided attendees with an abundance of new travel knowledge from hundreds of the top destinations and travel providers from around the world, as well as advice from leading travel experts including keynote speakers Rick Steves, Pauline Frommer, Samantha Brown, Peter Greenberg, Brian Kelly and Andrew McCarthy.

The series of shows this year saw an increase in attendance from past years as US travelers signaled they’re ready to book a trip for this year.

The series commenced in Chicago at the Donald E. Stephens Convention Center with headlining sponsor MSC Cruises . The show welcomed more than 16,500 attendees, 300 exhibitors and 500 travel trade and media members.

The New York Travel & Adventure Show returned for its second year to the Javits Convention Center partnering with TravMedia’s IMM to create New York’s first “travel week” as the city welcomed thousands of travel professionals and enthusiasts. The show had over 21,500 attendees, over 350 exhibitors, 850 travel advisors, and over 3,000 travel trade and media members.

With over a 50% increase in attendance from 2022, the Los Angeles Show located at the Los Angeles Convention Center and sponsored by Rick Steves’ Europe , welcomed more than 17,000 travel enthusiasts, more than 250 exhibitors, over 590 travel advisors and over 2,300 travel trade and media members.

The Denver Travel & Adventure Show , sponsored by Go Touch Down Travel & Tour s and Tourism Santa Fe , saw 11,000 attendees who had the opportunity to engage with over 200 exhibitors.

Celebrating its 16th year, the Washington DC Travel & Adventure show held at the Washington Convention Center welcomed 16,000 attendees and had over 180 exhibitors. This event was sponsored by MSC Cruises, Barbados Tourism , and Go Touch Down Travel & Tours .

The Atlanta Travel & Adventure Show at the Cobb Galleria Centre saw 7,000 attendees and over 150 exhibitors, with Visit Barbados coming in as the Major Sponsor for a weekend of travel planning, tips and deals.

The Boston Travel & Adventure Show , sponsored by Turkish Airlines , Go Touch Down Travel & Tours , Visit Barbados and Cruise Planners at the Hynes Convention Center welcomed 8,900 attendees and had over 125 exhibitors present.

The Dallas Travel & Adventure show was held at the Dallas Market Hall and sponsored by the Florida Keys and Key West, welcoming 8,000 attendees over the course of the weekend as the Travel & Adventure Show concluded its 2023 series.

“We’ve seen a large increase in not just the number of attendees this year across all our shows, but the quality of travelers that came to each event. Serious buyers proved that the desire for travel is stronger than ever amongst US consumers,” said John Golicz , CEO of Unicomm, LLC , who produces the Travel & Adventure Shows. “The shows have led the travel the industry back, with a record-breaking number of exhibitors signing up for the 2024 events.”

Show attendees engaged with destination representatives, tour operators and travel providers both domestically and from around the globe offering up travel ideas and inspiration. Attendees were even invited to take advantage of special deals and promotions on the spot to stretch their travel dollar and make their dream vacation a reality. This year exhibitors selling exclusive deals on the show floor saw spot selling out. To meet the demand from travelers, the Travel & Adventure Shows even brought in passport acceptance programs to several shows this year so that travelers could file passport applications and renewals on-site at the show, an initiative that proved to be popular amongst attendees as passport processing times have increased and local offices have booked up their passport appointments for months.

The Travel & Adventure Show has already released their calendar for the 2024 season which includes the addition of a new show to take place in Phoenix. The schedule of events for 2024 will be as follows:

  • Chicago | January 13-14, 2024

Upstate NY native starring in new PBS travel show about hidden gems, history

  • Updated: Apr. 25, 2024, 9:21 p.m. |

Sophia Michelen, left, and Scott “Doc” Varn, right, co-star in "America: The Land We Live In" — a new PBS travel/history show that explores the United States through a 19th-century travelogue called "Picturesque America". Sophia Michelen has a passport that would make anyone with wanderlust wildly envious.

The Upstate New York native and photojournalist has visited over 70 countries and has lived on three different continents. But aside from a few favored haunts in the Empire State where she grew up, Michelen said she never extensively explored the United States.

Now, that’s changing in a big, public way.

Michelen is co-starring in a new PBS show that explores hidden corners of the United States captured in “Picturesque America” — a 19th-century travelogue considered one of the nation’s first travel guides. The book is filled with beautiful engravings and tales of magical places across Reconstruction-era America.

In the PBS show — called “America: The Land We Live in” — Michelen and Scott “Doc” Varn, her co-host, visit spots featured in the 150-year-old book. They try to stand in the exact spots where the engravings were made and see how each location has changed.

“It’s kind of bridging the past to the present. That’s the hook,” Michelen said. “But what I love the most is the people we meet.”

Viewers can watch “America: The Land We Live in” on PBS.org , the PBS App or local PBS stations. The show airs on PBS stations across New York on Sunday, April 28.

The first episode of the “travel, adventure, history show” takes place in North Carolina and South Carolina, where Michelen and Varn explore cities and head out into the mountains to hike, raft and talk their way to the hidden places captured in the century-and-a-half-old travel guide.

But the experience that sparked the series happened two years ago in the Catskills.

Michelen, who lives in New York City, said she met Varn when they went on a hike with mutual friends at Kaaterskill Falls — a beloved, two-stage waterfall in Greene County that was featured in “Picturesque America”. During the walk, the group discovered the exact spot where the engraving included in the travel guide was sketched.

Growing up in Troy, Michelen was no stranger to Kaaterskill Falls. But the hike and engraving helped her see the well-known spot in a new light.

“We went to this trail in the Catskills that I had been all my life. I knew the area,” she said. “But once I stood in that exact spot, it was like I’d never seen it before.”

The experience forged a bond between Michelen and Varn — and led to the PBS show.

In the first episode, the co-hosts hunt for a towering oak tree east of the Mississippi and visit coastal waterways with a Gullah Geechee fisherwoman. The pair visit a “mysterious” old farm, PBS said, and a hard-to-find island.

Michelen hopes to eventually head home to New York to film a new episode of her show.

“The Battery in New York City is in this book, but also Kaaterskill Falls and Rochester and Buffalo,” she said. “It’s like the best of New York state.”

Upstate is widely featured in the vintage travelogue — including parts of the Capital Region and the Adirondacks. Michelen has visited some of the spots with family and friends, she said, and hopes to bring PBS along in the future.

That includes a trip to Troy, the city mentioned in “Picturesque America” where Michelen’s parents still live.

She has explored Troy, the place she long called home, through the lens of a nearly forgotten book. But she said explorers don’t need the travel guide to see Upstate differently.

“You don’t even need the book to guide you to see these locations in a new light. You could do that yourself,” she said. “It’s the journey. It’s the lessons in the histories you learn along the way.”

2 New York City beaches make Travel + Leisure's "25 Best in the USA." See the complete list.

By Dave Carlin

Updated on: April 29, 2024 / 6:47 PM EDT / CBS New York

NEW YORK -- Travel + Leisure magazine's annual list of the 25 best beaches in the U.S. includes a pair of popular ones right here in New York City.

The two beaches are sharing the prestigious space with other sun, sand and surf spots in places like Hawaii, California and Florida.

George Schlereth of Forest Hills said his love for Rockaway Beach predates the hit 1978 song by the Ramones with lyrics that went, "Rock, rock, Rockaway Beach."

"It's a great place to spend the afternoon. It's the best place you could go," Schlereth said.

So what else makes Rockaway Beach such a fan favorite?

Travel + Leisure praised Rockaway Beach's "Five-mile boardwalk, and surf-worthy waves."

"It's definitely very diverse. People come from all over come here," said Kristen Supple of Far Rockaway.

"Rockaway Beach, because I love like the waves and boogie boarding and they have great ice cream and food," said 10-year-old Jordan Cannetti.

"I used to come here as a kid with my parents and family and it's just night and day. The boardwalk, it's just amazing. Now, the restaurant," his father said. "The parks along the boardwalk are just amazing. Ninja Park is great The pickle ball, the basketball."

"They spent so much money fixing up the Rockaways. They brought in more people, more families down there. The place is packed now," Schlereth added.

And let's not forget the amazing Coney Island

Coney Island bubbled up to the Top 25 as well, with the editors of Travel + Leisure writing, "Coney Island is a perfect seaside wonderland of nostalgia and kitschy fun."

Kenya Dethan, who is 7, called it her favorite beach.

"I like the nice water. I like going on the roller coasters," Dethan said.

The thing about Coney Island is there is so much to do -- sand and surf, the boardwalk with the amusements, and the food and drinks -- all of it rain or shine.

"Number one in the world, Coney Island," resident David Dingle said. "Best of both worlds. You're at the beach and the stores all together, all in one place. Once you're here, you don't want to go back home."

Also making the best beaches list is the New Jersey favorite for fun, Asbury Park. It's the hometown of music legend Bruce Springsteen and features clubs like The Stone Pony , which keep the town highly rated and rockin'.

Nick Schroeder, right.

Nick Schroeder, 42, of Portland, is communications manager and multidisciplinary programmer for Space, a nonprofit arts venue in Portland. He’s also an actor, director and ensemble member with Mad Horse Theatre Company in South Portland. A native of Old Orchard Beach, he’s worked as a journalist and editor at several local publications.

As much as I like bopping around the state by myself, I’ll spend my perfect Maine day with my partner, Mallory, and our nearly 3-year-old toddler. The kid’s in the stage of life where she asks why to just about everything, and that question makes for good conversation.

Getting dressed (finding pants, socks, etc. and negotiating their deployment) can take a while in my house, so we’ll put on WMPG to keep the energy loose. I’ll pour a good cup of coffee, Speckled Ax Early Riser preferred , in my clunky travel mug. Then we’ll get things cracking at that one real good climbing tree in the park for a little proprioceptive rinse. The branches are real low to the ground and I don’t have to worry about my kid taking any nasty falls.

Will Zu Bakery still have croissants by now, or is that too much morning meandering? The neighbors tend to swarm the little West End spot – how is it this good? – and it can quickly sell out. If that’s the case, we’ll drive south. Actually, scratch that – Mallory will drive this leg, and I’ll bike. Our destinations will be the same, Palace Diner (in Biddeford). I’ll have the omelet du jour and those great big potatoes, and maybe a bite of my kid’s pancake – the dad handbook clearly states that you must eat your children’s leftovers. We’ll all poke our heads inside Biddeford Vintage Market and see what new vendors they’ve got (my aunt Barb runs the place with some friends) before making a quick spin into Color.Sound.Oblivion to check their newly stocked records.

With family who live nearby, I’ll be able to ditch the bike and hop into the car, heading north. We’ll stop in Portland to grab a couple of arepas for the road from the outrageously good Colombian food restaurant Maïz, and head to South Paris. In this fantasy, the Celebration Barn has a perfectly timed matinee show, and true to form, it’s equally enchanting for kids and adults.

After that, we’ll drive to Rockland (here’s where the kid naps) and head to a beach (any beach) before I pop into Curator , one of few consignment shops that bothers to stock nice stuff for tall fellas. Then it’s over to Rock City Cafe for a refill and a poke around Hello Hello Books behind the cafe. Last time, I found a nice used paperback of a Judy Chicago biography. Will I get this lucky again?

A stack of books at Print: A Bookstore in Portland. Ben McCanna/Staff Photographer

Returning to Portland, we’ll have had our fill of driving and Raffi sing-alongs. It’s time for our A-list East End retail trifecta – Ferdinand  for handmade wonders, Starry Eyes  for snazzy kids’ stuff, and Print: A Bookstore (more books!).

For dinner, the ideal is Asmara , the great Eritrean gem, where we as a family can share big communal plates of colorful food using only our hands as utensils. After we put the kid to bed, I’ll text a friend, and if his kid’s asleep, too, we can sneak out for a little nightcap at the Continental and discuss the news.

How would you spend your perfect Maine day? Send your itinerary, in 500 words or less, with a little about yourself, to [email protected] .
