15 Best Day Trips from Buffalo, NY

Buffalo is upstate New York’s most famous city, with its proximity to the USA side of the spectacular Niagara Falls and its almost equivalently important claim to fame – the invention of buffalo wings.

It’s an excellent base for travellers and a very pleasant destination in itself, with leafy parks and a beautiful location on the shores of Lake Erie.

Avail yourself of the plentiful excellent hotels, restaurants and bars in the City of Good Neighbours, and then make sure to explore more of the state and across the border into Canada with these fifteen brilliant day trip options.

1. Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls

A list of day trips from Buffalo would hardly be complete without mentioning its most famous nearby attraction, Niagara Falls.

Whether you want to ride on the Maid of the Mist boat, or simply observe from afar at the Observation Tower, nobody is going to deny that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see nature’s splendor in full force.

Horseshoe Falls, Bridal Veil Falls, Goat Island and the Whirlpool are just some of the highlights of this magnificent waterfall.

You can also head over to the Canadian side and check it out from there, if you feel like exploring a slightly different option.

Recommended tour : Niagara Falls USA Tour with Cave of the Winds and Boat Ride

2. Ellicottville

Allegany State Park

At just over an hour from Buffalo, the town of Ellicottville is a fantastic day trip option, especially for sport and nature lovers.

It’s got hiking and biking trails galore, as well as a local ski resort, and the town itself is a pleasant place to wander around.

Head to nearby Allegany State Park for some challenging hikes and round the day off with a splash in the lake.

Or perhaps head over to Holiday Valley Resort for a spot of golf.

For a less active option, you can also visit the famous Salt Cave.

3. Letchworth State Park

Letchworth State Park, New York State

Another great option for nature enthusiasts is the fantastic Letchworth State Park, which has the accolade of being the number one state park in the country.

There are so many ways to explore this place, with hiking trails criss-crossing the valleys, horseback riding on offer, and even cross country skiing in the right season.

The “Grand Canyon of the East” has so many picturesque spots that it would be hard to see them all in a day.

Perhaps a balloon ride from the company Balloons over Letchworth is your best option if you really want to get an overview.

4. Finger Lakes

Finger Lakes

Wine lovers, this is the day trip for you.

The Finger Lakes region is known for its excellent vineyards, as well as, of course, its many lakes and other bodies of water.

Sprawling over 124-000-acres, Finger Lakes will certainly not disappoint in terms of available activities; it’s got everything you could think of, from kayaking and fishing to swimming.

If wine is more your thing, you’ll still have plenty of options to choose from; there are more than 100 wineries spread out across the area.

There’s also an up-and-coming restaurant scene to be explored.

Downtown Toronto

Buffalo is actually closer to Toronto than New York City itself, making this an excellent option for a trip away for the day.

Shopping, wining and dining are the most likely ways to while away your day in Ontario’s capital – it has great options for all three.

All the way from high-end designers to local brands, you’ll find something to suit you in the malls, and Toronto is a modern city full of great restaurants.

Don’t miss a trip up to the top of the CN tower, either, it’s considered one of the city’s biggest tourist attractions.

6. Old Fort Niagara

Old Fort Niagara

Located in Youngstown, New York, Old Fort Niagara has been a site of important military history for more than 300 years.

Head north from Buffalo to get there, towards the shoreline of Lake Ontario.

The fort was built by the French in 1726, but has endured frequent battles for possession, switching hands between the French, British and Americans throughout history.

The War of 1812 saw the British win out, but at the end of that same war the Americans took it back.

It’s a great spot for history lovers and an impressive construction even for those who have limited interest in military affairs.

7. Chautauqua Institution

Chautauqua Institution

The Chautauqua Institution provides day trippers with a more intellectual diversion.

An educational center located near the picturesque Chautauqua Lake in the southwest of New York State, Chautauqua hosts events centered on spiritual growth and intellectual discussion.

You can head to the amphitheatre to take in a show, or simply stroll around the grounds of campus soaking in the atmosphere.

It’s a tranquil place to spend a few hours of reflection.

8. Niagara-on-the-lake

Niagara-on-the-lake

If you’ve seen the Falls before or you just feel like a day trip that’s a little different, then instead of heading straight there, take a detour to the charming tourist town of Niagara-on-the-lake.

Located across the border in Canada, there are so many things to divert your attention here, from excellent wineries to lovely bike trails along the Niagara River.

If you’ve timed your visit right during summer, you might also get the chance to hit the Shaw Festival – named after George Bernard Shaw – which celebrates theatre.

9. East Aurora

East Aurora

Located just south of Buffalo is the fascinating Roycroft Campus in East Aurora, home to a dynamic art colony.

The village prides itself on being the home of the Arts and Crafts movement, a direct reaction to the mass production of the Industrial era, and the products made there are simple, beautiful and handcrafted.

There are fourteen buildings spread across the historic campus, so be sure to take your time looking around.

10. Darien Lake

Darien Lake

As New York’s largest water and theme park, Darien Lake is a brilliant day trip option from Buffalo, especially for those with a young family.

Its seven different rollercoasters will be the kids’ highlight, but there are bumper cars, a Ferris wheel, and heaps of other rides to keep their attention throughout the day.

It’s really a no-brainer, children love it and adults love the excuse to be children for the day.

There’s also a Performing Arts Center next door, which has concerts that might be worth checking out if the kids somehow get bored of the rides.

11. Corning Museum of Glass

Corning Museum of Glass

Perhaps a surprising entry on a list of day trips is the Corning Museum of Glass, but it genuinely is a highlight of the area.

People come from miles around to see the spectacular exhibits displayed here, with information on the history, art and science of glass making, as well as demonstrations of how some of the pieces on display are made.

Marvel at the artistry of the craft through the many intricately designed show pieces, and perhaps visit the gift shop for a small souvenir of your trip.

If you feel that you haven’t had enough museums for one day, you can head over to the Rockwell Museum of Western Art nearby, which has a range of exhibits displayed on both Native and Western American art.

12. Presque Isle

Presque Isle Lighthouse

Another excellent family-centered day trip destination are the picturesque sandy beaches of Presque Isle, located on the shores of Lake Erie.

The peninsula is located around a two-hour drive from Buffalo, but it’s well worth the journey, with a multitude of recreational activities on offer, from swimming and boating to hiking, biking and bird watching.

Most equipment is available to rent, and a popular option is to take the kids out on the kayaks.

It will be a long day, but a very enjoyable one.

13. Griffis Sculpture Park

Griffis Sculpture Park

A unique blend of art and nature can be found in Griffis Sculpture Park, located just 45-miles from Buffalo.

Get out into the fresh air and hike along the park’s many miles of trails while marvelling at more than 250 huge sculptures – many of which can be climbed on and interacted with.

More than 400-acres of exploration through meadows, ponds and hiking trails will tire the kids out, and the artistry of the sculptures provides more than enough entertainment for the adults.

14. Rochester Museum of Play

Rochester Museum of Play

A fantastic rainy day option can be found in the Museum of Play in Rochester, New York State’s third largest city.

There are interactive exhibits a-plenty, featuring ever-popular characters from Sesame Street to America’s favourite comic books.

Explore the nation’s favourite toys in the Hall of Fame, or hop on the carousel or the passenger train.

Rochester itself has some great dining options to enjoy once you’ve had your fill of the museum’s exhibits.

Book online : Museum of Play Tickets

15. Toronto Islands

Toronto Islands

If you’ve already visited the city itself, Toronto Islands provide something a bit different for your day trip needs.

Catch a ferry over and take your bike if you have one; there’s no motorised transport on these islands.

You can walk, bike and boat your way around (bikes can be rented if you don’t have your own), and there’s also a popular little amusement park.

Pack a picnic to have after you’ve explored the sandy beaches that fringe the land, spotted the Gibraltar Point Lighthouse and had a look at Far Enough Farm.

Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin D. Martin House Complex Frank Lloyd Wright's Darwin D. Martin House Complex

Famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright called this complex of structures he designed in the early 1900s for New York businessman Darwin D. Martin "the opus," believing it exemplified his prairie house architectural ideal. More than a century later, the organic architecture has been rebuilt to its former grandeur and continues to enchant guests who come from all around to view the "domestic symphony," as Wright called it. The structures include the main house, the pergola, the conservatory, the carriage house and the Wisteria Museum Shop.

Visitors really appreciate the wealth of information that the docent-led tours provide. One TripAdvisor user calls this complex a "fabulous venue," recommending that visitors take the two-hour tour: "[It's] well worth the extra dollars to see all the rooms on the property."

Shea's Performing Arts Center Shea's Performing Arts Center

If you want a little Broadway on your Buffalo vacation, look no further than Shea's Performing Arts Center. Opened in 1926 as a venue for silent films, the center hosts touring Broadway troupes and other special events. Several decades ago, a group of community leaders saved the building from destruction by getting it listed on the National Historic Registry. Today, the theater continues to be renovated, but even still, the interior is pretty magnificent — you'll see a sea of plush red seats surrounded by a lavish stage and a richly colored ceiling.

One TripAdvisor user recommends stopping by the theater even if you don't have time for a show: "Just take a look at the stage and facilities ... You'll think you stepped into a theater in Paris. It's over the top ornate and a true gem."

Take an elevator up to the 25th floor and walk up three more floors to an observation deck, which overlooks Lake Erie, the Buffalo River and the busy city below.

One TripAdvisor user praises the sight from the observation deck: "After a trip in a rather scary lift, we got to the most amazing 360 degree view. Indeed you could see the mist at Niagara Falls."

Coca-Cola Field Coca-Cola Field

Coca-Cola Field is home to the Minor League baseball team, the Buffalo Bisons. This stadium, which seats 18,025, is one of the first examples of a retro-style stadium in a city center. This sort of stadium design seeks to embrace its urban context, boasting real grass (not turf) and nostalgic features like green seats; this style has since exploded across the country. ( Oriole Park at Camden Yards in Baltimore is another example.)

One TripAdvisor user praises the field's layout saying, "There is not a bad seat in the house." Others are highly complimentary of the stadium's affordability, from parking to game-day ticket prices.

Ralph Wilson Stadium Ralph Wilson Stadium

Buffalo is a big sports town, and the National Football League's Buffalo Bills are one of the city's most beloved teams. The Bills hurl the pigskin over at Ralph Wilson Stadium, and their fans aren't fair-weather. Even though they've made it to the Super Bowl four times, the Buffalo Bills have never pulled through for a win. But the fans still love them, and that shows in the stadium.

"Well no matter what the Buffalo Bills are ranking the fans definitely know how to show their support," said one TripAdvisor user. "We had a great time tailgating and being amongst fans." Others highlight the good food and fairly affordable tickets and parking rates. A smaller number criticize the craziness of the crowd, citing too much alcohol.

Buffalo Zoo Buffalo Zoo

The Buffalo Zoo's starring attractions are two polar bear cubs called Luna and Kali. In addition to these cute little fur balls, the zoo houses a variety of mammals, reptiles, amphibians and birds. The eco-rainforest exhibit is a hit with visitors; many people say that the rope bridge across the exhibit offers a great view of the turtles and alligators below.

Opening its gates back in 1875, the Buffalo Zoo is the third-oldest zoo in the country. As such, there are continuing renovations to the zoo that some visitors have found disappointing. Another TripAdvisor user praised its improvements: "It is amazing how far along the zoo has come over the years. There had been so many new attractions and exhibits and it looks like a world class zoo." Others were even more complimentary of the venue, citing its great staff and happy-looking animals.

Sahlen Field is located in the heart of downtown and is easily accessible via Metro Rail; just get off at the Erie Canal Harbor stop.

Liberty Building in Buffalo

The Liberty Building in downtown Buffalo was built in 1925 and designed by Alfred Bossom. The Neoclassical office tower was the largest of its kind in Buffalo when it was built and is still a standout building today.

The building is especially noted for the two huge statues on the rooftop, both based on the Statue of Liberty. Each statue stands an impressive 36 feet high.

The Liberty Building is 23 stories tall and owned by the Main Place Liberty Group; it is located near Lafayette Square.

While the tourist attractions are spread out, if you are coming to experience the vibe of this city, the best place to stay is right downtown, where historic old buildings grace the streets and create a lovely ambience. Below are some highly rated hotels in convenient locations:

Luxury Hotels :

  • For a quaint, boutique experience in the heart of downtown Buffalo, The Mansion on Delaware Avenue is just the answer. Set in a 19th-century, Second Empire style mansion, the hotel offers 24-hour butler service and top-end amenities at every turn.
  • Inside the HARBORCENTER complex, home to ice rinks and restaurants, the Buffalo Marriott LECOMM HARBORCENTER offers modern rooms, on-site dining, and a fitness center.
  • Newly-built, The Westin Buffalo , with an excellent downtown location attached to shops and offices, promises modern comfort, fine amenities, and luxurious surroundings.

Mid-Range Hotels :

  • At the top-end of the mid-range category is the InnBuffalo off Elmwood . This boutique hotel, with large suites and beautiful historical touches preserved during restoration, is in Elmwood Village, a short drive from downtown but walking distance to local shops and restaurants.
  • For a more modern experience, try the Hampton Inn & Suites in downtown Buffalo, featuring a pool and free parking, or the nearby Hyatt Regency , with large rooms, granite baths, and in-room refrigerators.
  • Budget Hotels : Budget hotels are hard to come by in Buffalo's city center. Good options can be found a short distance outside of downtown. The Econo Lodge South offers decent rooms and reasonable prices and is about a 10- or 15-minute drive from downtown. A little pricier, but with a good location in downtown is the BEST WESTERN - On The Avenue , offering free breakfast and parking.

27 Fun Things to Do in Buffalo, NY

Welcome to Buffalo Mural in Buffalo New York

Located in the western corner of New York along the shores of Lake Erie, you’ll find the state’s second-largest city: Buffalo.

After coming to prominence thanks to the Erie Canal, the city is now a great place for visitors because of the many fun and unique things to do in Buffalo, NY.

So, whether you want to learn about the city’s history, enjoy the area’s natural beauty, or try some regional food specialties, there are definitely many fun things to do in Buffalo that you won’t want to miss.

Buffalo River History Tour

Guide talking during a Buffalo River History Tour in Buffalo New York

If you want to get out on the water and learn about the history of Buffalo, there are several options. However, my favorite is the Buffalo River History Tour.

This boat ride takes guests several miles upriver on the Buffalo River and past many remnants of the city’s industrial past. Along the way, guides offer a great overview of the history of the city and its importance, largely thanks to the Erie Canal.

Of course, in addition to offering a great way to learn about Buffalo, the ride is also quite beautiful, and relaxing on the boat is a great way to really soak up the city.

Martin House

Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House in Buffalo, New York

The Martin House is a historic home designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and built between 1903 and 1905.

Known officially as the Darwin D. Martin House, this home is considered by many to be the most important work of the first half of Wright’s career and among the best works of his life, along with the Guggenheim Museum in New York City and Fallingwater in southwestern Pennsylvania .

Visitors can take tours of this beautiful home and see many original pieces of furniture, along with sections of the home that have been carefully reconstructed over the years

Buffalo Museum of Science

Dinosaur fossil at the Buffalo Museum of Science in New York

The Buffalo Museum of Science is located just north of the downtown area and is one of my favorite things to do in Buffalo, NY.

This museum is part science museum, part natural history museum, and part children’s museum, making it a great destination for both kids and adults that love learning about science and the world.

Visitors can enjoy interactive science exhibits, dinosaur fossils, cultural exhibits, and more.

Buffalo City Hall Observation Deck

View from the the top of Buffalo City Hall

Want a birds-eye view of Buffalo? Head to the free observation deck at the top of Buffalo City Hall .

This deck offers 360-degree views of the city including great views of Buffalo’s skyline, Lake Erie, Canada, and even the mist of Niagara Falls from both indoor and outdoor vantage points.

In addition to the views, take a few minutes to also enjoy the incredible beauty and artwork in City Hall while going to and from the observation deck.

Glen Falls near Buffalo New York

I always love finding small waterfalls in local parks when I’m traveling, and Glen Falls perfectly fits into this category.

Glen Falls is roughly 25-30 feet tall and is located in Williamsville, NY, about 20 minutes east of downtown Buffalo. This waterfall is the focal point of Glen Park and can be easily seen from either the road or via a short trail that goes right up to the waterfall.

That makes this not only one of the best things to do near Buffalo but also one of the best roadside waterfalls in New York .

Buffalo History Museum

Exterior of the Buffalo History Museum in New York

The Buffalo History Museum is located in the last building from the 1901 Pan-American Exhibition that still exists. That makes not only the displays historic but also the entire structure that the museum is located within.

This museum features an incredible collection of artifacts related to the history of Erie County covering topics ranging from Native Americans through to the Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame. Amazingly, they even have items related to the assassination of President William McKinley, which occurred in Buffalo shortly after he visited his very building.

If you love history, this is definitely a must-do activity in Buffalo.

Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park

USS Little Rock in the Buffalo Naval Park

Located along Canalside, the Buffalo and Erie County Naval and Military Park , or simply the Buffalo Naval Park, is one of the most unique things to do in Buffalo, New York.

In fact, it’s the largest inland naval park in the United States!

The focal point at the park is the three naval ships, the USS Little Rock, the USS The Sullivans, and the USS Croaker submarine. Visitors can climb aboard all three ships to tour them and learn both about their history and what life was like for the sailors that served here.

There is also a great museum and some land-based equipment on displays for visitors to explore.

Original Buffalo Wings at Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York

You can’t visit Buffalo without eating some Buffalo wings, and there’s nowhere better to do it than at their birthplace, Anchor Bar .

Anchor Bar is located just north of downtown Buffalo and is where Teressa Bellissimo (who was also the wife of the owner), turned the chicken wing, which was normally either thrown out or used to flavor stocks, into a worldwide phenomenon.

Today, visitors can visit the restaurant to try some of their great wings and their equally great pizza. Of course, while this might not be the best place to get chicken wings in the city, it’s definitely worthwhile to visit the first place to make them.

Buffalo Botanical Gardens

Inside the greenhouse at the Buffalo Botanical Gardens in New York

The Buffalo Botanical Gardens is a wonderful space that is perfect for those that love beautiful plants.

Nearly the entire garden is enclosed within a giant greenhouse that offers year-round viewing of everything from banana trees to bonsai. Each room of the greenhouse is themed and offers a look at plants from tropical regions around the world.

There’s even an indoor waterfall!

Buffalo’s Theatre District

A Metro Rail Train passing through the Theatre District in Buffalo NY

When visiting Buffalo, don’t miss a chance to check out the city’s Theatre District.

This area is home to several historic theaters, including the famous Shea’s Performing Arts Center along Main Street. There are also many shops, restaurants, art galleries, and more in the district.

Whether you come to see live theater, do a little shopping, or simply to stroll through this beautiful area, this is a great spot to check out in the heart of downtown Buffalo.

Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site

Outside the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site in Buffalo NY

One of the most unexpected things to do in Buffalo, NY is the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site .

It was in this home that Theodore Roosevelt was inaugurated as president in 1901 after President William McKinley died from an assassin’s bullet only a few miles away.

Visitors can tour this historic spot and view their excellent exhibits and films while learning about the presidency of Theodore Roosevelt.

Explore & More Children’s Museum

Entrance to Explore & More Buffalo Children's Museum

If you’re looking for fun things to do with kids in Buffalo, the Explore & More Children’s Museum is a great option.

Located near the shores of Lake Erie, this children’s museum features four floors of fun activities targeted at kids 10 and younger. Whether they enjoy sports, science, art, or just running around, there is something in this space for every kid.

Even better, along the way, they’ll learn about science and Buffalo’s history and culture.

Eternal Flame Falls

There might be no more unique attraction in Erie County than Eternal Flame Falls .

In many ways, this small waterfall is no different than the hundreds of others that dot the landscape of Upstate New York. However, what makes this spot special is the small natural gas leak in a crevice behind the waterfall.

When lit (bring a lighter in case it has gone out before your arrival), this leak creates a small flame behind the veil of water. This is truly a unique spot that outdoor lovers won’t want to miss.

Schwabl’s

Beef on Weck at Schwabls near Buffalo, NY

While Buffalo wings might be the top food in the city, Beef on Weck comes in a close second.

There are many places to get this specialty in the Buffalo area, but few places are more renowned than Schwabl’s . In fact, they even made it into an episode of “No Reservations” with Anthony Bourdain.

This sandwich consists of roast beef on kümmelweck bread. Kummelweck is a type of kaiser roll that is topped with kosher salt and caraway seeds, giving it an interesting and unique flavor on its own.

Don’t miss the chance to try this tasty sandwich when exploring the Buffalo area.

Forest Lawn Cemetery

Blue Sky Mausoleum in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Buffalo NY

Since 1849, Forest Lawn Cemetery has been the final resting place for thousands of Buffalo residents.

The beautiful grounds of this cemetery are well worth exploring on their own, but it’s also interesting to try and find the graves of some of Forest Lawn’s most prominent burials including musician Rick James, Congresswoman Shirley Chisolm, and President Millard Fillmore.

The cemetery is also home to the only mausoleum ever designed by Frank Lloyd Wright.

Millard Fillmore House

Outside the Millard Fillmore Presidential Site in Erie County New York

Speaking of President Millard Fillmore, his former home in East Aurora is also an interesting place to visit near Buffalo.

This modest home was lived in by Fillmore from 1826 until 1830 while he was practicing law nearby. Interestingly, other than the White House, this is the only house that Fillmore lived in that is still standing.

Visits to the home are a great way to learn about this often-overlooked New York native.

Buffalo Zoo

Polar bears at the Buffalo Zoo in Buffalo NY

The Buffalo Zoo is the country’s third-oldest zoo and is a great spot for animal lovers to visit.

The zoo is located on the edge of Delaware Park in northern Buffalo and first opened to the public in 1875. Today, it is home to approximately 1,200 animals representing many different species from around the world.

Visitors can walk through the many different habitats in the zoo, including both indoor and outdoor spaces, and learn more about the animals that live here.

Evangola State Park

Child throwing a rock into the water at Evangola State Park near Buffalo NY

Evangola State Park is a beautiful spot to visit along the shores of Lake Erie in southern Erie County.

The park features a half-mile-long beach that’s popular in the summer with swimmers. There is also a large campground, hiking trails, and a playground.

The shale cliffs along the edge of the beach add a lot of beauty to this great state park.

Flight of beers from 42 North Brewing in East Aurora NY

If you love beer, you’re in luck because there are many great craft breweries in Buffalo .

These range from tiny operations to large breweries that sell their beer throughout the state and even further afield. However, they all take pride in producing some of the best beer that you’ll find in New York.

While there are many to choose from, a few of my personal favorites include Big Ditch Brewing , 42 North Brewing , Old First Ward Brewing , and Community Beer Works .

Albright Knox Art Gallery

Shark Girl Statue in Buffalo New York

The Albright Knox Art Gallery  is a fantastic place for art lovers to check out in Buffalo.

The museum is located in Buffalo’s Cultural District and has been collecting and displaying art since the mid-1800s.

Today, the collection consists of a wide variety of styles of art representing many of the world’s most famous artists. When you visit, you can see pieces by Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso, Andy Warhol, and many more.

The museum also has done a lot to sponsor pieces of public art around Buffalo including the Freedom Wall and the strange Shark Girl statue (pictured above).

Our Lady of Victory National Shrine and Basilica

Inside the Our Lady of Victory National Shrine and Basilica near Buffalo NY

Located just around the corner from the Buffalo Botanical Gardens, you’ll find Our Lady of Victory National Shrine and Basilica .

This incredibly beautiful church was constructed in the 1920s and is one of the most incredibly designed places of worship I’ve come across in New York.

Self-guided tours are allowed throughout the day, and it’s worth taking a few minutes to pop in and see the majestic interior.

The Spot Where President McKinley was Shot

President McKinley marker in Buffalo NY

As mentioned above, President William McKinley was shot by an assassin in Buffalo.

McKinley was shot as he greeted guests at the Temple of Music at the Pan-American Exposition in 1901. Since the building was built to be a temporary structure, it was torn down shortly after the exposition ended in late 1901.

Today, a marker in the middle of a residential neighborhood marks the spot where McKinley was standing when he was shot. While there’s little to see here, it’s still an interesting place for those interested in presidential history to visit.

Buffalo’s Professional Sports Teams

Buffalo is a great sports town, and no matter what season you visit, there are some great professional sports that you can watch.

Probably the most popular sports team in Buffalo is the Buffalo Bills football team, who play their games at Highmark Stadium south of Buffalo. However, right behind them in popularity is the Buffalo Sabres hockey team that plays in the KeyBank Center near Canalside.

During the summer months, you can catch the Buffalo Bisons , the AAA team for the Toronto Blue Jays baseball team at Sahlen Field.

The Freedom Wall

Paintings along the Freedom Wall in Buffalo New York

Buffalo is filled with many pieces of great public art, but none can rival the Freedom Wall .

This 300-foot wall at the corner of Michigan Avenue and East Ferry Street depicts 28 Civil Rights leaders from throughout American history.

Each painting is done by a different artist, and they are all quite stunning to look at. Adjacent to each painting, there is a sign with information on the person’s life and impact.

Herschell Carousel Museum

The exterior of the Herschell Carousel Factory Museum near Buffalo NY

Located just north of Buffalo, you’ll find the former factory for the Herschell Carrousel Factory, which produced many of the wooden carousels and other amusement park rides in the early 20th century.

Today, the old factory has been turned into a museum , which highlights both how carousels were made and the incredible craftsmanship that went into making these popular rides.

There are also two historic carousels you can ride, a collection of historic kiddie rides, and more.

Buffalo Harbor State Park

Beach in Buffalo Harbor State Park in Erie County NY

Buffalo Harbor State Park is located just south of the downtown core and offers many ways to relax and enjoy the beauty of the city’s lakeshore.

This nearly 200-acre park features a large and unique playground for kids, a marina, and a small beach (though swimming isn’t allowed). It is also quite popular for fishing.

Niagara Falls

Horseshoe Falls in Niagara Falls State Park at Sunset

While I did my best to keep this list of things to do in Buffalo, New York to only places in Erie County , I couldn’t skip over the area’s most popular draw, Niagara Falls.

Niagara Falls State Park is located approximately 20 miles north of downtown Buffalo and is home to one of the world’s most impressive collections of waterfalls.

Visitors can check out the three waterfalls that comprise Niagara Falls, take a boat ride to the base of the falls, go behind the veil, and much more. You can also go further upriver to check out sites like Whirlpool State Park and Old Fort Niagara .

Hi Jim-I appreciate your tips and reviews and use them as guidance for road trips when family visits from out of town. I live near Buffalo and we would like to know more about the grain elevators. Do you have any tips for touring in that area?

Should include Riverworks or at least do a separate article on it…It’s amazing

Awe-inspiring Hikes Around Buffalo

ROLLING HILLS. RIVER RAPIDS. STUNNING CLIFFS. Unique geological features. And forests, streams, and meadows. Western New York offers a wide variety of hiking opportunities for those looking to get outside and enjoy some fresh air.

Here are 15 unique hikes to take within an hour’s drive of downtown Buffalo:

Eternal Flame at Chestnut Ridge

Chestnut Ridge Road, Orchard Park

Chestnut Ridge County Park not only retains charming hiking trails, but also a hidden gem – the Eternal Flame. The natural gas leak, nestled within a trickling creek waterfall earned it a spot on the “15 Jaw-Dropping Places Worth Visiting” list on Mentalfloss.com. The flame is reachable via a trek up a ravine.

best places to visit near buffalo ny

Akron Falls County Park

44 Parkview Dr., Akron

The moderate trek directs hikers along rushing Murder Creek to the lower falls viewing area – a breathtaking scene of gentle cascades tumbling over natural limestone formations. Picnic and play areas are available for families looking to relax in the sun as well.

Knox Farm State Park

437 Buffalo Rd., East Aurora

More than 600 acres of rolling meadows and forested trails await visitors just outside the village of East Aurora. The former estate of the Knox family offers a bucolic landscape and myriad of hiking opportunities.

best places to visit near buffalo ny

Tifft Nature Preserve

1200 Fuhrmann Blvd., Buffalo

Families, birdwatchers, and hikers alike would enjoy a quick getaway to the 264-acre Tifft Nature Preserve. Formerly a landfill, the now-rehabilitated land invites visitors to observe native wildlife just minutes from downtown. The preserve – composed of wetlands and expansive forests – features hiking trails, boardwalks, and even a glimpse of Buffalo’s industrial heritage.

Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve

93 Honorine Dr., Cheektowaga

The family-friendly Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve offers well-kempt trails, allowing visitors to explore the diverse flora and native wildlife. Guests can loop around a peaceful pond speckled with magenta lilies or follow the Beech Tree Trail to view the biggest American beech tree in the state. The park even offers entertainment for children in the form of both an environmental education center and a nature play area.

best places to visit near buffalo ny

Niagara Gorge

3180 DeVeaux Woods Drive, Niagara Falls

The Niagara Gorge at Whirlpool State Park trails will suit both scenic strollers and challenge-driven climbers. The Rim Trail, at the top of the gorge, provides a picturesque overlook of the river. Those pursuing a more adventurous hike may wish to descend the steps to the gorge to view the rapids via the moderate Devil’s Hole or the difficult Whirlpool Rapids Trail. As repairs were conducted this summer, check with the NYS Parks department for staircase accessibility here.

Zoar Valley

Forty Road entrance

“Zoar is a breathtaking spectacle of the kind you would expect to find in the wilds of the West,” according to blogger Ed Healy. “It’s one of the natural wonders of New York State, with old growth forests, dramatic vistas and heart-pounding recreation opportunities.” The cliffs and gorges of Zoar can be found outside the village of Gowanda.

best places to visit near buffalo ny

Beaver Meadow

1610 Welch Rd., North Java

Just 45 minutes from downtown Buffalo, Beaver Meadow is crisscrossed with a series of well-marked trails, ranging from easy to moderate levels of exertion, making it perfect for hikes with children. Pick up a map at the parking lot and head across the road to the aptly named Rusty Stove Trail. Here you’ll find – wait for it – a rusty stove in pieces on the ground — a remnant, no doubt, of a long-ago farm that stood in these woods. Stop by the Interpretive Center on your way out to learn a little about the flora and fauna that flourish here.

Buckhorn Island State Park

E. River Rd., Grand Island

This hike skirts both the Niagara River and the marshy expanse that comprises most of Buckhorn. The 4.1 out-and-back trail takes you under the Grand Island bridges that carry I-190 north, but hike a little further and you’ll find yourself away from the hum of traffic at the tip of the Buckhorn Peninsula. You’ll be right in the middle of the Niagara River as it rushes to the brink of the Falls and plummets downward, creating a plume of mist hundreds of feet high.

best places to visit near buffalo ny

Deer Lick Conservation Area

Point Peter Rd., Gowanda

Part of the Zoar Valley conservation landscape, Deer Lick is a relatively easy 3.1-mile hike that wanders through towering old growth trees and gently flowing streams, culminating in a spectacular view of the valley far below. Established by the Nature Conservancy, the trail is well-marked and well-maintained. As with all hikes in and around Zoar Valley, be extra cautious as you near the edge of the cliffs.

18-Mile Creek

South Creek Rd., Hamburg

This four-mile out-and-back hike in the town of Hamburg was described by Visit Buffalo Niagara blogger Eileen Healy as “a place that was worthy of comparison to some of the most impressive natural places we had visited in the past – a deep gorge with a fast-flowing stream seen through a curtain of new green growth.”

best places to visit near buffalo ny

Griffis Sculpture Park

6902 Mill Valley Rd., East Otto

The rolling hills south of Springville provide the perfect setting for the sculpture of Larry Griffis, Jr. and friends. Scores of massive steel sculptures dot the hillsides and circle a pond – imaginative creatures great and small seen through the eyes of one of Buffalo’s most renowned artists. There’s no other walk through woods like it in all of Western New York.

Hunter’s Creek

Hunter’s Creek Rd., South Wales

VBN correspondent Jay Josker described Hunter’s Creek as a hidden gem that reminds him of some of our national parks. “There’s a turn in the gorge that looks like a section of The Narrows in Zion. A heavy spring rain will make the creek gush like Yosemite’s Merced, and if you go on an off-day it’s secluded enough to make you think you’re in Glacier. The scenery isn’t quite the same and the trails are comparatively easy, but you’d be hard pressed to find another spot around here that so fully immerses you in nature.”

best places to visit near buffalo ny

Little Rock City

Little Rock City Rd., Little Valley

Massive rock formations and the passageways cut through them by thousands of years of erosion make Little Rock City a magical place to explore. Located south of Ellicottville, this is the most remote hike on our list, taking you deep into the heart of Western New York to a place of geologic wonder.

Sprague Brook County Park

9674 Foote Rd., Glenwood

The ride south from Buffalo is almost as enticing as the hike. Route 240 meanders alongside the twists and turns of Cazenovia Creek, through the lovely villages of West Falls and Colden and into the part of Western New York locals like to call “ski country.” You’ll pass Kissing Bridge ski resort just before making a left into Sprague Brook Park, where you’ll find a lengthy trail that loops around the park’s namesake stream. Depending on the time of the year, prepare to get your feet wet crossing the brook.

While the trail is short, you’ll get stunning views of the falls for most of the way.

Note that swimming and wading isn’t permitted here, and hikers have reported that a local park ranger often enforces this rule with citations during peak season. Go very early on weekends or in the summer to avoid the large crowds that come to visit the area.

Eternal flame at chestnut ridge.

  • Distance from Buffalo: 20 miles/25 minutes
  • Trail Length: 1.4 miles
  • Elevation Gain: 137 feet

One of the most unique natural phenomena in New York state is a waterfall that runs over a small cave where there’s a constant natural gas fire shining through the water. Yes, this is the aptly-named “Eternal Flame” at Chestnut Ridge, and while it’s often small, you can typically see this strange fire glowing orange amidst the cool colors of the water and the forest. The natural gas deposit in the rock is abundant, and it’s what keeps the fire going day after day.

While there isn’t much elevation gain, the 1.4-mile trail to see this flame is tricky for one reason: rocks. The rocky terrain here is especially difficult to navigate when it’s wet outside, which makes the rocks slippery and hazardous. Be sure to wear sturdy hiking boots with thick, grippy soles for safety on this trail!

Additional Resources for Hiking Near Buffalo, NY

What to pack.

  • Breathable hiking clothes – For warmer hikes, you’ll want to wear a sweat-wicking shirt and breathable pants, like these Patagonia hiking shorts for men and women . For cold-weather hikes, we recommend dressing in layers, including merino wool baselayers for men and women , a down puffer jacket for men and women , and a Northface waterproof outer shell for men and women (a must for hiking in Seattle). And don’t forget a pair of the best women’s and men’s hiking socks!
  • Trekking poles – You won’t need these for every single hike , but we suggest throwing them in your car just in case. We recommend the Black Diamond Trail Ergo cork trekking poles , which are lightweight, easy to transport, and durable.
  • Water bottle – Having water available at all times is a huge must. To limit disposable plastic, we recommend bringing your own refillable water bottle. We’re obsessed with Hydro Flask water bottles because they keep water cold for hours.
  • Sunscreen and bug spray – Sweatproof sunscreen and DEET bug spray can help you avoid sunburn and bug bites, two of hiking’s most annoying after-effects. Our favorite kind of sunscreen is Sun Bum , as it is free of harsh chemicals and safe for marine life, including coral reefs.
  • A brimmed hat or cap – The sun can be brutal in open hikes, so always pack a brimmed hat or cap for day hikes in the sunshine.
  • Emergency blanket and first aid kit – We’d strongly recommend bringing a first aid kit and a lightweight emergency blanket on every hike. Why? Because the unfathomable can happen, and it’s always best to play it safe.
  • Durable day pack – A durable day pack is the perfect spot to stash all your hiking gear. While any backpack will do, we recommend the Osprey Tempest 20 or the Talon 22 day packs because they’re comfortable and breathable for long hikes. For more information, check out our best day packs for any terrain guide.

Buffalo is the second-largest city in New York State by population, and a diverse city in Western New York State that has so much to offer travelers, from iconic 20th-century architecture to a thriving waterfront to heart-pumping activities, as well as a diverse food and drink scene. And while summer is ideal for enjoying the city’s parks and rivers, winter sees locals ice-skating and playing ice sports like hockey and curling.

The Erie Canal, Buffalo River, and Lake Erie are the three bodies of water around the city and their waterfronts are highlights of the Queen City.

Buffalo has a diverse lineup of neighborhoods worth checking out, like charming Elmwood Village, bustling downtown, artsy Allentown, hip Hertel Avenue, diverse Five Points, and Michigan and Jefferson Avenues, the crossroads of African American heritage in Queen City. There is a small public transportation system, though, the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority , which runs one train line that runs from the University of Buffalo to the First Niagara Center, where the Buffalo Sabres hockey team plays. The NFTA also runs an extensive number of buses on dozens of routes, and you can use the same tickets on both. Check schedules carefully for run times.

Travel Tip:  While using Buffalo as a base for a visit to Niagara Falls is a fine reason to visit the city, Buffalo has a lot to offer in its own right. Consider adding an extra day to your trip to explore the Queen City fully.

Based on both Crystal Palace and Kew Gardens Palm House in the UK, it houses everything from orchids and bromeliads to water features, a rainforest section, and collections of cacti and carnivorous plants.

Its outdoor gardens are just as delightful to explore as picturesque paths take you past an arboretum, butterfly garden, and children’s area with temporary exhibits and events also regularly taking place.

Exhibiting exquisite Art Deco-style architecture, the breathtaking Buffalo City Hall rises dramatically above downtown far below. The city’s standout symbol and sight, it is a treat to tour around with beautiful features to be found both inside and out.

One of the largest and tallest municipal buildings in the States, it was erected in 1931 and towers to a staggering 396 feet in height. Its enormous exterior’s geometric design and decorative statues and friezes make for a striking sight, while its interior also boasts refined council chambers and a gorgeous stained-glass window ceiling.

In addition to visiting the mayor’s office and seeing some of the fine features that coat its thirty-two floors, guests can venture out onto its observation deck that offers divine views of the city with Niagara Falls to be spotted far off in the distance.

3. Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park

Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park

Lying on the shores of Lake Erie, the brilliant Buffalo & Erie County Naval and Military Park can be found just a short stroll from the center. Besides decommissioned US Naval vessels, the museum has interesting artifacts and exhibits for you to explore on the history of the American Navy.

First opened to the public in 1979, it now contains a captivating collection of vessels, vehicles, and aircraft with uniforms and equipment, medals, and military memorabilia on show. While its displays are very well done, the highlight is of course exploring its former Naval vessels that include the USS Little Rock, the USS The Sullivans and the USS Croaker.

On top of wandering about the inside of the cruiser, destroyer and submarine, guests can visit its moving Monuments Garden with an awesome Maritime Simulator experience also on offer.

2. Frank Lloyd Wright’s Martin House

Frank Lloyd Wright's Martin House

To the east of Delaware Park is yet another of Buffalo’s must-see tourist attractions: the marvelous Martin House. Designed by the world-famous Frank Lloyd Wright, the complex showcases some stunning Prairie School architecture and is regularly ranked among his most important and impressive works.

Built between 1902 and 1905, Martin House is undoubtedly the complex’s standout sight due to its unusually large size, open plan layout and its intricate details and design. Named after businessman Darwin Martin who commissioned the whole project, it is connected to various other buildings on the property, such as a conservatory, carriage house, and gardener’s cottage.

Now a National Historic Landmark, the complex is lovely to tour around with arresting architecture, fabulous furnishing, and gorgeous gardens wherever you go.

1. Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls

One of the Earth’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders, Niagara Falls lies just half an hour’s drive to the north of Buffalo. Straddling the border between Canada and the US, it makes for one of the most spectacular sights imaginable. Phenomenal views, photos and boat trips can all be enjoyed at the wonderful waterfall.

Impressively stretching over 3,200 feet in length, the famous fall is actually made up of three different ones, the largest of which is Horseshoe Falls. Next to it you can see both American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls with the humongous waterfall reaching up to 165 feet in height at its highest point.

Due to its staggering size and scale, Niagara Falls is not to be missed when in town. Its endless wall of water makes for some fantastic photos with unforgettable boat trips to be had at the foot of the falls.

Q: How Does Buffalo Compare With Syracuse, NY?

Both cities offer something a little bit different to travelers, but for those looking for big attractions like Niagara Falls or exploration of the Great Lakes, Buffalo offers a bit more. Syracuse, on the other hand, is a smaller city a few hours east, with better access to the Finger Lakes region and the Capital Region.

Q: How Does Buffalo Compare with Ithaca, NY?

These two cities are incredibly different. Buffalo is a large happening city with hundreds of thousands of residents. That is not the case with Ithaca. Ithaca is a much more quiet and more aesthetic city sitting right on the Finger Lakes of Upstate New York.

Buffalo is a busy place sitting on the doorstep of one of the natural wonders of North America. They are both great destinations, it just depends on what travelers are looking for.

Q: Is There Really Anything Else To See In Buffalo Other Than Niagara Falls

Yes, there is quite a bit to do in Buffalo than just going to see Niagara Falls. In fact, for many who visit the city often, Niagara Falls no longer appears on their itineraries. Buffalo is home to a great food scene, active outdoor events and venues, a bit of theater, and a great deal of passion for their sports. There is so much more to Buffalo than just Niagara Falls .
