Brother Cane to Reunite for 2022 + 2023 Tour Dates

You can add another reunion to the 2022 slate as '90s rock favorites Brother Cane will be hitting the stage later this year. The band, fronted by singer-guitarist Damon Johnson, have confirmed their return with plans not only for 2022 but also 2023.

Johnson will be joined in this reunion iteration of the band by original Brother Cane bassist Glenn Maxey as well as his longtime collaborator Buck Johnson on keyboards and drummer Jarred Pope.

While dates are currently in the process of being booked, the band's first confirmed show will take place at the Northern Lights Theater in Milwaukee on April 22 .  Johnson also revealed to AL.com that the group will add shows for their hometown of Birmingham, Alabama and Nashville, where he currently resides, for later this year.

Johnson and Maxey were founding members of the band back in 1991, with the group going on to release three studios albums - 1993's self-titled debut, 1995's Seeds and 1998's Wishpool - before their eventual split. Over the course of their run, they scored several Top 10 Mainstream Rock singles including the chart-topping " And Fools Shine On " and " I Lie in the Bed I Make " as well as " Got No Shame " and " That Don't Satisfy Me ."

In the years since their split, Johnson has gone on to perform with Thin Lizzy, Black Star Riders, as part of Alice Cooper's band and just last year he filled in for Gary Rossington in Lynyrd Skynyrd. It was that last tour that convinced him to reform Brother Cane, with the musician revealing he was surprised how many Skynyrd fans recalled the band and what their songs meant to them. After questions of a reunion continued to pop up, Johnson moved forward with his plan to reactivate the group.

While 2022 will bring select dates, the band is planning a full-fledged tour for 2023 coinciding with the 30th anniversary of their debut album. “I’m just over the moon about this!” says, Johnson. “Brother Cane fans are some of the most passionate that I’ve encountered in all of my travels.”

He adds, “I love all of these songs and the guys and I cannot wait to get back out there and share them with the amazing fans and friends of Brother Cane. Let's Go!”

BROTHER CANE Reforms For Live Shows, New Music

BROTHER CANE will return to the concert stage next month. The first confirmed performance will take place on Friday, April 22 at The Northern Lights Theater in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Joining frontman/guitarist Damon Johnson will be longtime collaborator Buck Johnson on keyboards, drummer Jarred Pope and original BROTHER CANE bassist Glenn Maxey .

BROTHER CANE is an American rock band originally from Birmingham, Alabama. Formed by Johnson and Maxey in 1991, the group released three studio albums, charting several singles including three No. 1s and five top 10 hits.

BROTHER CANE found immediate success with the July 1993 release of its self-titled debut album, which delivered three singles: "Got No Shame" , "That Don't Satisfy Me" and "Hard Act To Follow" . "Got No Shame" reached No. 1 on the Mainstream Rock charts and garnered the band U.S. tours with AEROSMITH , Robert Plant and LYNYRD SKYNYRD . The band's next album, "Seeds" (1995),yielded another No. 1 rock track, the haunting and swampy "And Fools Shine On" . This hit led to a lengthy and successful tour in support of the mighty VAN HALEN . Three years later saw the release of "Wishpool" (1998) and BROTHER CANE 's third No. 1 song at rock radio, "I Lie In The Bed I Make" . After major personnel changes at Virgin Records (the band's label),as well as a major shift in style at rock and alternative radio formats, the band laid down their instruments and called it a day in 2000.

Over the next 20 years, Johnson went on to become one of the most sought-after guitarists and songwriters in rock. Touring extensively with rock icons like ALICE COOPER and THIN LIZZY , and co-writing tracks for the likes of Sammy Hagar , Stevie Nicks , Carlos Santana and Steven Tyler , Johnson 's profile steadily rose.

2019 found Johnson recording with producer Nick Raskulinecz ( FOO FIGHTERS , KORN , RUSH ) and releasing the critically acclaimed debut from DAMON JOHNSON & THE GET READY , 2020's "Battle Lessons" . It was while supporting that record in 2021 that he received the call that any guitarist that grew up in the south could only dream of: filling in for Gary Rossington in the legendary LYNYRD SKYNYRD . Touring with SKYNYRD , Johnson was pleasantly surprised at how many fans not only remembered BROTHER CANE , but shared their stories on how much the band and those songs meant to them. "Will you ever get back together? Would you ever tour again? Please!!??" Those big questions are now getting a big answer: "Hell Yes!"

BROTHER CANE will perform select dates in 2022, with plans for a full tour in 2023 — and for some new music.

"I'm just over the moon about this," says Johnson . " BROTHER CANE fans are some of the most passionate that I've encountered in all of my travels." He adds, "I'm certainly proud of all these songs, and the guys and I are looking forward to bringing them to the people once again."

I remember when “And Fools Shine On” first came out. I hurried out and bought that cd. I remember thinking that was such a great tune and then forcing myself to try and like the album when in reality it completely sucked lol. Here we are 30 years later and for the first time in nearly 30 years I listened to fools. It has not aged well and is boring. I remember thinking it was such a heavy song when in reality it’s not.

I still like “That Don’t Satisfy Me,” but that’s about it.

Not familiar with that one Dana.

Here ya go: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W76yc-Y6-GA .

Thank you Dana. Good tune and much better than Fools!

You’re welcome.

Rock radio up here in NY, played that song a lot, when this album came out. It is what made me buy it, and is still, hands down my favorite Cane song.

Just a good, straight rock song with a bluesy vibe.

Most folks don’t realize that the root of most rock songs is the blues. The blues are the foundation and you can never go wrong with it.

It’s obvious to me, especially when I first heard AC/DC.

BROTHER CANE Celebrates 30th Anniversary with U.S. Tour

In addition, their 1993 self-titled debut album, a timeless classic, will be reissued on October 20, 2023.

BROTHER CANE is set to make a triumphant return commemorating their 30th Anniversary. A U.S. celebration tour is set to begin October 26 in Woodstock, GA continuing through December 2nd in Memphis, TN.

More dates are expected to be announced soon, see below for the initial itinerary and full details. In addition, their 1993 self-titled debut album, a timeless classic, will be reissued on October 20, 2023, and offered on vinyl for the first time igniting a wave of nostalgia and excitement among fans.

Adding to the anticipation of this re-release, the band went back into the studio with longtime collaborator and multi-platinum producer Marti Frederiksen and recorded two brand new songs. “Blinded By the Sun” and “Are You In There Anymore,” are set to be released as a special 7” vinyl simultaneously.

As founding member Damon Johnson explains of reuniting, “It was our manager, Kevin, who suggested we do this now after hearing from fans at my other shows who kept asking ‘when is Brother Cane coming back?’ After Glenn and I had loosely talked over the years of playing music together again, we all felt the time was right for us now.”

Co-founding member, Glenn Maxey echoes the same sentiment, “Seldom does a person get the chance to relive a dream that they pursued in their twenties. It’s hard to put into words. I’m just extremely grateful for the chance to play great music with great friends at this time in my life. Let’s go!”

As they hit the stage once again, fans can anticipate the live renditions of the band’s chart-topping favorites (“Got No Shame”, “And Fools Shine On”, “I Lie In The Bed I Make” and more), each performance capturing the energy and essence of Brother Cane's signature sound while reigniting the passion that made them favorites of their generation.

This highly anticipated reunion tour promises to deliver an unforgettable experience, as they take audiences on a nostalgic journey through their extensive catalog while also introducing some exciting new material. Brother Cane's resurgence serves as a testament to the enduring power of their music.

At the heart of Brother Cane's long-awaited reunion are its founding members, Johnson (lead vocals, guitar) and Maxey (bass) who originally formed the band in 1991 in their hometown of Birmingham, AL.

Johnson's distinctive guitar skills, vocals, and captivating stage presence, combined with Maxey's solid bass lines and rhythmic foundation, formed the core of the band's signature sound. Brother Cane found immediate success with the release of their self-titled debut album which delivered three singles: “Got No Shame”, “That Don’t Satisfy Me,” and “Hard Act to Follow” with “Got No Shame” reaching #1 on the Mainstream Rock charts earning the band U.S. tours with Aerosmith, Robert Plant and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The reunion of these talented and road tested musicians brings an added sense of authenticity and excitement to the tour. The chemistry between Damon and Glenn has stood the test of time, as their musical connection effortlessly translates into electrifying live performances.

With their reunion, fans can expect a renewed energy and a deep sense of camaraderie on stage, as the founding members of Brother Cane join forces once again to captivate audiences with their raw talent and unwavering passion for their craft. Joining the duo for this reunion are longtime friends and fellow bandmates Jarred Pope (drums/Tom Keifer Band), Buck Johnson (keys/Aerosmith, Hollywood Vampires), and Tony Higbee (guitar/Tom Keifer Band).

Inside hit-making Alabama band’s reunion tour, first new songs in 25 years

A local radio station happened to play “Low Rider” while Damon Johnson was out driving around Nashville not long ago. Johnson started vibing on the congas that give that ‘70s funk classic by the band War its bloodshot shimmy.

Then it hit him. “Low Rider” is the same tempo as “Blinded By The Sun,” one of the first new songs in 25 years by Brother Cane , the Southern hard-rock band Johnson first made his name with.

Johnson passed an idea on to producer/cowriter Marti Fredricksen. In his Nashville studio, Fredricksen, whose resume includes hits with Aerosmith, Carrie Underwood and Buckcherry, then laid down the conga track that now opens “Blinded By The Sun,” which is powered by Johnson’s big, James Gang-style guitar riff.

Those snake-charmer congas grab the listener right from go. And an unintentional tip of the hat to one of Brother Cane’s biggest hits, “And Fools Shine On,” which topped the rock charts in 1995.

“I’m definitely at a place creatively where I refuse to deny my influences ever again,” Johnson says. “You know, it was tough in the ‘90s. Not only was it gonna make it hard for us to, you know, get radio airplay with what was happening around us, but it was almost like it wasn’t cool anymore to celebrate Bad Company, and the Doobie Brothers and the Allman Brothers and Skynyrd, these classic bands.

“I don’t know how to say it, bro. I just don’t give a shit anymore. If it’s something that gets me off, and if somebody connects the dots on the inspiration, instead of being afraid of that, I welcome that. I love that.”

Founded in Birmingham, Brother Cane defied the odds in the grunge/alternative dominated ‘90s to score big hits off their 1993 self-titled debut album . “Got No Shame,” a scorcher featuring harmonica from Birmingham local legend Topper Price , became a huge hit.

It also made Fredricksen, who cowrote with Johnson and coproduced with Guns N’ Roses recording engineer Jim Mitchell, an in-demand studio ace.

In addition to guitar slinger and freshly converted lead singer Johnson, Brother Cane’s original lineup featured bassist Glenn Maxey , drummer Scott Collier and rhythm guitarist Roman Glick.

Brother Cane’s debut produced more hits, including rock and soul ballad “Hard Act To Follow” and rocker “That Don’t Satisfy Me.” The band toured with the likes of Robert Plant , Aerosmith, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Mötley Crüe .

After the first album cycle though, Maxey was burnt out. He stepped away to focus on family and worked a straight job.

Huntsville native Maxey’s friend Dave Anderson was brought in on guitar and Glick moved back to bass, his primary instrument. This Brother Cane lineup released sophomore album “Seeds” followed by 1998 LP “Wishpool.” They played hallowed venues like Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado and scored film synchs.

But it wasn’t enough. Although Brother Cane did well in markets like the Midwest and had radio hits, they never sold a lot of albums, then a major part of being a successful major label rock band. Frustrated by turnover and lack of support at their label, Brother Cane was done.

“We couldn’t make a living,” Johnson says. “I mean, let’s be real man, you start a new business and you’ve done it for seven years and you’re not making money, then maybe that’s not a good business. [Laughs] That has nothing to do with the fulfillment of the music and playing together, shows and whatever.”

Johnson went on to become a collaborator or songwriter for stars like Sammy Hagar, Stevie Nicks , Steven Tyler and Santana. Then he joined Alice Cooper’s band on guitar for six years.

Then Johnson got the opportunity of a lifetime to play guitar with “The Boys Are Back In Town” rockers Thin Lizzy, a band he had posters of on his bedroom walls back in the small Alabama town Geraldine, where he’d resided before his time in Birmingham.

Johnson developed a solo career, releasing six albums so far including 2020 standout “Battle Lessons.” He also tried country on for size, forming the group Whiskey Falls, which also featured Buck Johnson, who’d go on to join Aerosmith’s touring keyboardist and backing vocalist .

In 2021, Southern rock icons Lynyrd Skynyrd reached out to Johnson to fill in for guitarist Gary Rossington after Rossington, Skynyrd’s sole remaining original remember, had emergency heart surgery. Unfortunately, Rossington, known for his lyrical slide guitar playing on “Free Bird,” died this May at age 71 .

When Lynyrd Skynyrd decided to carry on, Johnson became a full-time member, making it the third legendary band he’s been in.

But Damon Johnson had unfinished business with Brother Cane. He and Maxey hadn’t spoked to each other in many years but reconnected around 2019.

Maxey had spent the last couple decades working in industrial electronics. But after his wife and both parents died in the same year, Maxey decided to return to what made him happiest: Being a full-time musician.

After playing around Huntsville with an Ozzy Osbourne cover band, he got a gig playing in the solo band of ex- Bishop Gunn frontman Travis McCready .

In 2022, Johnson and Maxey reunited and rebooted Brother Cane . The current lineup also boasts old friend Buck Johnson, guitarist Tony Higbee and drummer Jarred Pope, both of Cinderella frontman Tom Keifer’s solo band.

The new Brother Cane did several shows last year, including rock festival Monsters on the Mountain and hometown shows in Birmingham and Huntsville.

This year, Brother Cane is stepping things up for their debut album’s 30th anniversary. On Oct. 27, the tour comes to Mars Music Hall at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville. (Tickets for the 8 p.m. show, with young Southern rocker Cage Willis opening, start at $28 plus fees, available via ticketmaster.com and the VBC Box Office, address 700 Monroe St.)

Brother Cane have close to 20 shows booked, crew and management team in place, the original album’s first-ever vinyl pressing, and two new songs.

In addition to “Blinded By The Sun,” the band’s released “Are You In There Anymore,” also produced and cowritten with Fredericksen. The lyrically stirring track calls to mind a mix of Tom Petty and Jason Isbell . Mid-song, Damon and Higbee engage in an Allmans-meets-Lizzy guitar tangle.

The music includes some elegant lines from Buck Johnson, who recorded his keyboard parts remotely while on tour with Hollywood Vampires, the supergroup featuring Alice Cooper , Joe Perry and Johnny Depp.

On both “Are You In There Anymore” and “Blinded By The Sun,” Maxey and Pope’s grooves are lean, tight and strong.

To record the new songs, Damon brought out the Marshall amp he’d used on Brother Cane’s debut. Guitars included his reptilian green Les Paul and sunburst Gibson reissue.

Because there are new songs to play in the live set – strong new songs – makes the Brother Cane reunion about more than nostalgia.

Maxey says, “Instead of we’re just gonna get together and play the song that we did 30 years ago, now it becomes more of a living, breathing moving-forward, you know, situation. The band’s kind of restarted and there’s new music coming out. So yeah, it’s made a huge difference.”

Still, it’s been sweet and full circle for Maxey and Damon to reconnect. In addition to their shared adventures as young musicians back then, they talk about family and joke about being rockers in middle age.

“It was easy to get some young guys and throw them in a van and run around and play songs,” Maxey says with a laugh. “Because the chances that they’re all going to be OK, and they’re going to be in good enough condition to play the show.”

In Brother Cane’s early stages, including a time when they were called Chyld, the band struggled to find the right fit on vocals. It was Maxey that suggest Johnson, who’d never been a lead vocalist, step up to the mic himself.

In addition to band rehearsals, at home Maxey has been playing along to Dixie Dregs and Kansas records to get his fingers tour-ready. Live, he’s playing Spector basses and the quintessential rock bass amp, an Ampeg SVT.

In addition to both new tunes and songs from the ‘93 debut, the set includes material from the two Brother Cane albums Maxey wasn’t part of. He says he’s having a ball playing bass live now on “Seeds” and “Wishpool” songs. “Man, ‘Wishpool’ is such sophisticated songwriting and production. It’s my favorite [album] out of the three of them. I’m always pushing to play more ‘Wishpool’ stuff.”

Although there are just three Brother Cane albums, between the Black Crowes and GN’R-influenced debut, the more Seattle-sounding “Seeds” and gleaming “Wishpool,” the set goes through several shades of rock.

“You can listen to them and hear a natural progression of the songwriting and the lyrics and everything,” Maxey says. “I could listen to those three albums and not really know anything about this band and be able to tell what was the first album, the second, the third.”

From the debut, Maxey’s faves to play live include the swampy “Make Your Play,” which Johnson cowrote with West Arkeen, who also cowrote classic Guns N’ Roses songs like “It’s So Easy,” “Yesterdays” and “Bad Obsession.”

Both Johnson and Maxey are quick to credit Fredericksen for Brother Cane’s initial success. Johnson says, “There’s no question Marti was a monumental part of the original band.”

Fun fact: In addition to being an accomplished co-writer/producer, Fredericksen did the vocals for the “Almost Famous” movie songs by fictional band Stillwater. Yep, that’s him howling “Fever Dog.”

Johnson says Fredericksen did “a lot of the heavy-lifting” on the debut Brother Cane, as Johnson was inexperienced as a lyric writer back then. But now, with decades of songwriting experience, Johnson arrived at writing sessions for the new songs with pages of lyrics and demos. He’d had the chorus for “Are You Still In There” for years, which he’d written with Ricky Warwick from their time together in Thin Lizzy offshoot band Black Star Riders.

Coming back to Brother Cane now, it’s made Johnson appreciate his band’s rebirth, songs and, most of all, their fans. “I’ve always said, Brother Cane fans are some of the most passionate on the planet. There’s just not that many of them, you know? [Laughs ] But those that have been with us and have been waving that flag, man, relentlessly. After all this time, I’m happiest for them because I’m sure they felt like they were never going to this day.”

A big difference in being with huge acts like Alice Cooper, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Thin Lizzy instead of a “baby band” like Brother Cane was coming up, Johnson says, is “you don’t have the stress of a shitty hotel room. Or no shower. No food in the dressing room. None of that ever happens anymore, so everything’s easy and you can just focus on the music.

“It’s just made me value what we did achieve in the ‘90s with Brother Cane. And now having a great team, good management, great band got a proper road crew again, there’s a there’s a lot of work that has gone into this over the last year-and-a-half. I just feel really grateful man, you know?”

Vinyl’s enjoyed quite a resurgence over the past 12 years or so. But during the mid to late ‘90s, vinyl had steeply dropped from its ‘60s through ‘80s mainstream heyday.

As good as Brother Cane’s original album sounds on CD and even cassette, the classic vibe deserved to be heard on vinyl’s warm grooves. In addition to the first-ever ‘93 LP pressing, the two new Brother Cane sounds have been pressed on seven-inch vinyl, available at the band’s merch table and their website .

Maxey says, “When I was young, you had a record-sized cover and pictures and the whole thing, and you would sit in your room and listen to records. It lost a lot of its allure when it went to CDs. That’s one of the things that excites me the most [about the reunion] is having that thing on vinyl.”

Damon Johnson: ‘Songwriting Has Begun’ on New Brother Cane Album

Brother Cane had their moment in the early '90s and it was a good one that carried them many miles. The Birmingham, Ala. band shared the stage with Aerosmith , Van Halen , Robert Plant and plenty of others who had been their rock heroes.

"Got No Shame," led by the bluesy harp work from Birmingham local Topper Price, served as the infectious introduction of Brother Cane to the world, with the song receiving heavy airplay at rock radio following its release in 1993.

Though the group went its separate ways not long after the release of their third album, Wishpool , in 1998, guitarist and vocalist Damon Johnson continued on. He lent his guitar skills to the likes of Alice Cooper and Thin Lizzy , while also writing songs for Stevie Nicks , Carlos Santana and Sammy Hagar .

Turning the focus back to his own career in recent years, Johnson has released two strong albums that served as an appropriate primer for the reunion that nobody -- including Johnson himself -- saw coming.

Brother Cane reunited in April for two shows in Illinois and Wisconsin, with additional dates planned for later this year and 2023. The current version of the group finds Johnson joined by original Brother Cane bassist Glenn Maxey, keyboardist Buck Johnson and drummer Jarred Pope.

We spoke with the guitarist, who has also been playing with Lynyrd Skynyrd for the past year, about Brother Cane's return and what lies ahead.

One of the really exciting developments this year has been the return of Brother Cane. How did this reunion come together? I have to give all credit to my manager, Kevin Lee. I had not thought about this. It hadn’t crossed my mind. I’ve just been so focused on my last two solo records. Certainly, the Skynyrd situation required a lot of my attention and it was exciting and fun and all of that. I had plenty on my desk to stay busy with.

But Kevin came to a couple of the Skynyrd shows and not just talking with the band, but even being out talking to some of the fans in the crowd. He and I both were getting so many people talking about Brother Cane and asking about [the group] or just sharing their stories. “Oh yeah, I saw them in 1994 and they opened for Aerosmith in Rochester, New York, it was one of the best shows I ever saw.” You know, that kind of stuff. I know that’s what got Kevin’s wheels spinning. He called me out of the blue one day and said, “Hey man, I’ve got a crazy idea. What about Brother Cane?” I said, “What about it?” [Laughs] I said, “I don’t know.”

You know, I love Brother Cane so much. I love those songs so much. It’s so important to me, kind of spiritually. I guess the reason I haven’t put any thought into performing as Brother Cane again is because it had to be special. I didn’t want to just half-ass do it, just go book a bunch of shows in some bars. It’s like, no. I just wasn’t motivated to do it unless it was going to be done properly. To have a great partner in Kevin, it’s just changed the whole landscape for me. There’s no question that who was going to be in the band was an important conversation to have. You know, getting the original guys back together just isn’t sustainable. Certainly not right now. Because everyone is spread out all over the country. And, you know, everybody’s busy. They’ve got their own lives.

That said, it was a huge thrill to have that phone call with the original bass player, Glenn Maxey, and just say, “Hey man, what do you have on your calendar?” He’s like, “Well, I’ve got a few things. What have you got?” When I told him I wanted to do some Brother Cane dates, I swear I thought the guy was going to just break down, man. He was so thrilled. Just that energy of reconnecting with Glenn is a huge part of this moment in the story of Brother Cane. Because, look, he was the guy that was with me as we put it together in the first place.

It was basically the two of you initially, right? It was. It was a little bit of a revolving door for about a year there. Different singers, different guitar players, different drummers. Glenn was in Chyld, that’s what we were called when we were shopping that original tape around when I was just the guitar player. And then we attracted the attention of Virgin Records, because they really liked the songs and they liked the band. We spent six months or so trying to find a different singer. Glenn was with me, through all of that.

He was there that night [when] the A&R guy from Virgin heard me singing some cover songs at a bar in Birmingham and pulled me off to the side and said, “Hey man, you didn’t tell me you could sing.” [Laughs] I swear, Glenn was standing right there when I was talking to this guy, Aaron Jacoves, the A&R guy who is my friend to this day. I said, “Aaron, I don’t want to be the singer. I want to be Joe Perry . You’ve got to help me find Steven Tyler .” You know, we’d already spent a bunch of money making demos and trying different singers and flying people in. He just said, “Listen man, we’re running out of time. Let’s go in there tomorrow. Just sing a couple of songs and let’s see what it sounds like.”

Glenn didn’t hesitate to pull me aside and go, “Dude, you have to do this. You should do this, man. You don’t sound like anybody else, because you haven’t been standing in front of the mirror pretending to be Robert Plant or Roger Daltrey or whoever. You’ve just been focused on songwriting and being a guitar player.” He added, “But you have a great voice. Let’s give it a shot.” So Glenn was pivotal in that, man. It changed my life, obviously, that moment. I’m really thrilled to be playing with Glenn again. It feels incredible.

What's the plan for the rest of the year and beyond as far as Brother Cane? There’s no question that the Skynyrd situation is part of our weekly meetings, Kevin and I. You know, they’re already looking at doing shows in 2023, but they wouldn’t really get fired up until the summer of next year. So there’s this poetic beauty about getting to kind of step back and forth between Brother Cane and Lynyrd Skynyrd. Because Skynyrd is this built-in promotion for Brother Cane! Johnny Van Zant introduces me every night in front of 10 to 20 thousand people and says, “This is our friend Damon Johnson, stepping in to help us out for Gary Rossington , from Brother Cane.” You can almost see people look straight to their phones, like, “I’ve got to look this guy up!” And then they go, “Oh yeah!”

Listen to Brother Cane's 'Got No Shame'

Is a new Brother Cane album possible? I think the short answer is yes. It’s yes, because you know me, I’m always writing. I just need something to write for. It’s like, what’s the focus? That’s what’s been so fulfilling over the last five years is that I shifted gears and went, “I’m going to make solo records.” I feel like I’ve done a pretty good job. So if you said, “Alright, well maybe it’s time for a Brother Cane record.” It would certainly bring attention to the band, it would give us some new songs to play.

I think you know better than anybody that pretty much any of those songs off of Memoirs of an Uprising or Battle Lessons , could have been Brother Cane songs. So whenever I pick up an electric guitar and stand behind a microphone, it kind of sounds like Brother Cane. To me, just the thought of making a record, I have nothing but positive feelings about that. There’s no trepidation or eye-rolling or exasperation. It would just be a blast. I’ve got no idea what it would sound like, but I know we wouldn’t put it out unless we felt it was great.

I got a great phone call from my buddy Brian Wheat from  Tesla  the very morning we put out that announcement about Brother Cane. He may have called within the hour. He goes, “Hey man, listen, we’ve got to talk. We’ve got to put something together. You didn’t tell me you were going to put Brother Cane back together. Fuck, I love that band. That band had hits, Damon!” He added, “Do you understand how branding works?” I’m like, “Yes, yes, I understand how it works.” [Laughs]

As we wrap up, what else is on deck for you? I have to ask that, because I didn't have a Brother Cane reunion on my bingo card. It wasn’t on my bingo card either. I’m going to use that. That’s awesome. I have a deep desire to make another acoustic record. I spend hours a week, just me and an acoustic guitar, either writing or just playing songs that I admire by other writers. You know, for a music fan to just put on that record in the right mood, the right frame of mind, I love folk songs and I love singer-songwriters. I’m proud to consider myself one of those as well.

So yeah, I really, really want to make one. I’ve got about a half dozen songs that I’ve written and I’m always picking random and sometimes obscure songs by other artists where I go, “I should do a cover of that and make it my own.” That wouldn’t require a bunch of bells and whistles to pull that off. I’ve got a great microphone right here at my house and a couple of pieces of recording gear. I can knock it out here and take it to somebody like Nick and have him mix it and be done and get it out. I really want to put that out.

But you know, my iPhone is just full of monster riffs, buddy. I’m always putting the riffs down. I just went to my amp guy and got two of my favorite amps tuned up and ready. I’m jonesing to get back in the studio with all of my gear and with the band and bring out some songs. You know, see what we can come up with. I’ll definitely be with Skynyrd all year in 2022 in some capacity. Then, we’re going to book Brother Cane dates around that. Hopefully in early 2023, it would be great to announce a package that Brother Cane is on with another band or two that would be a good fit with [us]. But yeah, man, the songwriting has begun in earnest. I’m excited about that.

Brother Cane is an American rock band originally from Birmingham, Alabama. Formed by singer/guitarist Damon Johnson and bassist Glenn Maxey in 1991, the group released three studio albums and several charting singles including three number 1’s and five top 10 hits. Brother Cane found immediate success with the release of its self-titled debut album which delivered three singles: “Got No Shame”, “That Don’t Satisfy Me”, and “Hard Act To Follow.” “Got No Shame” reached #1 on the Mainstream Rock charts and garnered the band U.S. tours with Aerosmith, Robert Plant, and Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The band’s next album, Seeds, yielded another #1 Rock track, the haunting and swampy, “And Fools Shine On.” This hit led to a lengthy and successful tour in support of the mighty, Van Halen. Their last release, Wishpool, brought Brother Cane’s third #1 song at Rock Radio, “I Lie In The Bed I Make”. After major personnel changes at Virgin Records, the band’s label, as well as a major shift in style at rock and alt radio formats, the band went on what turned out to be an extended hiatus. During this time, Damon toured the world as the guitarist for legends, Alice Cooper and Thin Lizzy. Just when he thought all of his musical dreams had come true, In early 2021 Damon was asked to fill in for the legendary Guitarist and founding member of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Gary Rossington. A position that Damon still holds today. While touring with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Johnson was pleasantly surprised on how many fans not only remembered Brother Cane but shared their stories on how much the band and those songs meant to them. “Will you ever get back together? Would you ever tour again? Please!!??” Those are big questions, and they deserved a big answer, “Hell Yes!”

Brother Cane is headed back to the studio with the original producer, Marti Frederiksen, and will be performing on select dates in 2022 with plans for a new release and full tour in 2023!
