Bikini Kill, Then and Now: A Front-Row View of a Punk Revolution

bikini kill tour history

By Evelyn McDonnell

  • May 3, 2019

When Bikini Kill took the stage at a packed Palladium in Hollywood on April 25, the band reclaimed a podium it had left 22 years earlier. For much of the audience, the show was a first chance to see the band they had discovered through books, or movies, or maybe even their mom’s record collection. For others, including myself, it was a jolt back to a defining moment in our lives. Time accordioned, and I realized: Bikini Kill is as vital as I remembered.

I was a 28-year-old punk fan and journalist who had pretty much given up on the pit when I walked into 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley, Calif., on a Saturday night in 1992 — or so I thought. In a decade-plus of attending shows, I’d been mashed in one too many mosh pits and resigned myself to straining to see bands from the safe confines of the back of the room.

Then I saw my first Bikini Kill show.

924 Gilman Street is a collectively run, all-ages, nonprofit performance space in Berkeley that has been the home of East Bay punk since the mid-80s. In 1992, admission was probably five or six dollars. Charging more would have been capitalistic. For a handful of green, we got to see three great bands: Bikini Kill, Tribe 8 and Pansy Division.

[ Listen to a playlist of 25 essential riot grrrl songs .]

Bikini Kill was a four-piece that split its time between Washington, D.C., and Olympia, Wash., the towns that had been identified as the twin cities of what an LA Weekly cover story called “Revolution Girl-Style Now.” That title was a lyric from a Bikini Kill song — the first line of the first song on the self-titled debut EP the band released the day before the Gilman show. Having been identified as the flagship act of the riot grrrl movement, Bikini Kill had a lot of expectations riding on its young shoulders on Oct. 10, 1992.

Nonetheless, the group was just the most famous of an upsurge of bands reclaiming punk from straight white men. The queercore band Pansy Division made the kind of pop-punk that would in a few years turn Gilman into the epicenter of American D.I.Y. via Rancid and Green Day, but Pansy Division played it funny and pointed. The five women of Tribe 8 also played for laughs, but its music was unadulterated thrash. Like almost every male punk singer before her, Lynn Breedlove took off her shirt as soon as the scene got heated — which was pretty soon.

Tribe 8’s gender detonation probably primed the pump for the show’s headliners. Forget anger management: Anarchy management is the key to a great punk show. Bikini Kill’s simple act of revolution was to confront the punk-rock status quo from the moment it took the stage. “Girls to the front!” they shouted. And like that, the pit was ours.

Well, sort of. Not all men went willingly to the rear. The pushback Bikini Kill faced from its simple act of affirmative feminist action has been documented in histories of riot grrrl, including the 2013 documentary “The Punk Singer,” about the band’s vocalist, Kathleen Hanna. Shows frequently got interrupted by arguments, by the need to stop an overly aggressive audience member, by violence. I don’t remember anything specifically going wrong at the Gilman show. But I recall the sense of chaos — that anything could happen.

There was something about Bikini Kill that unleashed tethered souls, for good and for ill. Maybe it was the way Tobi Vail hit the drums like everyone’s lives depended on it. Or the way Hanna danced with fierce joy while bellowing from a place deep inside. She’d wear a bra, or a half-shirt, but even her midriff — sometimes with words like “Slut” scrawled across it — was destabilizing in a way that Breedlove’s bare torso was not. With her deconstructed cheerleader and stripper moves, Hanna still had one foot in the world of sexual objectification, while Tribe 8’s singer had broken through to the other side. The straddle was compelling and upsetting. As Hanna herself sang, “In her hips, there’s revolution.”

Time has not tamed Bikini Kill, but its ferocious response to assault and inequity has found a much bigger audience today than it enjoyed a quarter-century ago. At the Palladium, Hanna wore a cheerleader outfit as she led 5,000 fans in a singalong retort to a molesting father: “Suck my left one.” Hanna is one of the great frontpeople of all time, but she is best with this band behind her. The pounding of Vail’s toms doubled by Kathi Wilcox’s bass pushes Hanna’s voice into a roar that is primal and undeniable; she makes you listen.

Reunion shows are often just showcases for nostalgia. But the return of Bikini Kill feels less like a blast from the past and more like a superhero’s intervention. Its songs address sexual violence, harassment and exclusion in ways that are both cathartic and emboldening. Hanna directly spoke to the current political context, telling the audience to stay strong. “We’re still changing [expletive] and they can’t take that away from us,” she said, then tore into “Resist Psychic Death.” Words of wisdom indeed.

Like-minded acts are again sharing the dais with Bikini Kill. Opening night it was the Los Angeles punk legend Alice Bag, with special guests Allison Wolfe (of Bratmobile), Teri Gender Bender (Le Butcherettes), Francisca Valenzuela and Lysa Flores. Bikini Kill didn’t try to police the Palladium pit. “We don’t need ‘girls to the front,’” Hanna said. “I think that’s taken care of.” Thousands swarmed in front of her, dancing wildly in a space that was, once again, ours.

Bikini Kill Announce Rescheduled 2022 Tour

By Brenna Ehrlich

Brenna Ehrlich

After spiking tour dates in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Bikini Kill announced a rescheduled slate of shows across the U.S. and Europe for 2022.

The tour will launch April 29th, 2022 in Los Angeles and wrap September 17th in Redmond, Washington. Bikini Kill was set to embark on a North American tour last March, but those dates were moved to 2021 when Covid-19 started spreading across the country, then, eventually, delayed again. The 2022 run will also boast added shows in Los Angeles, New York, Austin, El Paso, Tucson, and Seattle.

“We have moved all of our tour dates to 2022 to ensure our fans, our crew, venues’ staff, and the band’s safety,” Bikini Kill said in a statement. “We know many of you have had your shows rescheduled more than once and appreciate your patience and flexibility.” Fans with tickets to canceled dates should contact the venue in question for refund information.

Bikini Kill, who reunited in 2019 for a run of shows, also announced a 25th-anniversary edition of their album Reject All American , with a 500-copy blue vinyl limited-edition available May 7th via Bandcamp .

Bikini Kill’s music was recently featured in the Netflix movie Moxie — directed by and starring Amy Poehler — which tells the tale of an aspiring Riot Grrrl. “I love that kids may get turned onto Bikini Kill and other feminist bands through the movie,” lead singer Kathleen Hanna told Rolling Stone . “Hopefully, some kids will be like ‘This sucks,’ and write their own songs.”

Bikini Kill

Bikini Kill is a feminist punk band that was based in Olympia, WA and Washington, DC, forming in 1990 and breaking up in 1997. Kathleen Hanna sang, Tobi Vail played drums, Billy Karren (a.k.a. Billy Boredom) played guitar and Kathi Wilcox played bass. Sometimes they switched instruments. Bikini Kill is credited with instigating the Riot Grrrl movement in the early 90's via their political lyrics, zines and confrontational live show.

The band started touring in June 1991. In addition to touring the US several times, they also toured Europe, Australia and Japan. Bikini Kill recorded and released a demo tape, two EP's, two LP's and three singles. Their demo tape was self-released,while their first two records came out as a full length CD/Tape and their singles were posthumously collected on CD.

Bikini Kill believed that if all girls started bands the world would change. They actively encouraged women and girls to start bands as a means of cultural resistance. Bikini Kill was inspired by seeing Babes in Toyland play live and attempted to incite female participation and build feminist community via the punk scene. They used touring as a way to create an underground network between girls who played music, put on shows and made fanzines. This independent media making and informal network created a forum for multiple female voices to be heard.

Band in the USA: Bikini Kill unveil 2024 North American tour dates

bikini kill tour history

What the world needs now (still, and probably more than ever) is Bikini Kill . The resurrected feminist punk band led by Kathleen Hanna has announced a North American tour for the summer, and included in the itinerary is — at least so far — a lone New England date, a September 6 twirl at State Theatre in Portland, Maine.

The stateside shows follow a run of March appearances in South America and June gigs in Europe. The 16-date North American tour starts August 15 in Los Angeles for the first of two shows at The Wiltern, and wraps September 11 in Baltimore.

Bikini Kill first reformed in 2019, playing their first live shows in more than 20 years. The upcoming tour showcases the iconic line-up of Hanna on vocals; Tobi Vail on drums; and Kathi Wilcox on bass; with guitarist Sara Landeau rounding things out.

Bikini Kill Drops 2024 North American Tour Dates

Bikini Kill is set to head out on a trek from March through September with stops in European and South & North American cities.

The pioneers of the “riot grrrl” movement will perform in Mexico and South America, beginning in Mexico City on March 3 before heading to São Paulo, Santiago, Buenos Aires and more until the mid-month. Early summer will see the punk band play several European and U.K. cities including Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, London, Glasgow and more from June 1 through 16. In-between, vocalist Kathleen Hanna will embark on a book tour in May celebrating the release of her upcoming memoir, “Rebel Girl: My Life As a Feminist Punk, “ which is due May 14.

Bikini Kill’s North American run will kick-off August 15 at The Wiltern in Los Angeles, making stops in San Francisco, Denver, Chicago, Toronto, Brooklyn, and more before concluding on September 11 at the Baltimore Soundstage in Baltimore.

Formed in Olympia, Washington in 1990, the group currently consists of all original members aside from guitarist Billy Karren. The lineup includes singer and songwriter Kathleen Hanna, bassist Kathi Wilcox, and drummer Tobi Vail. The group dropped two LPs and several EPs before disbanding in 1997.

In 2019, Bikini Kill joined forces again to play several gigs in U.S. and Europe. Although they announced a 13-date North American tour for 2020 following the 2019 shows, they had to reschedule it to 2022 in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a 2020 interview with Rolling Stone , Hanna pointed out to the dual forces of Donald Trump’s presidency and the #MeToo movement as a reason for their reunion.

“Since Trump was elected, there’ve been all these times when the news is on and I’m singing a Bikini Kill song in my head,” Hanna said. “It’s like I need to hear these songs… With the #MeToo movement and a president who says, ‘Grab them by the pussy,’ it’s hard not to feel like, ‘OK, feminism’s coming back.”

Tickets for all shows will head on sale Friday, February 9 at 10 a.m. ET/7 a.m. PT. via Bikini Kill’s official website . Fans can also score tickets via secondary sites like MEGASeats (use code TICKETNEWS for 10% off your order), StubHub , or Ticket Club , where readers can obtain a free membership and avoid service fees with the code TICKETNEWS.

About Bikini Kill:

Active from 1990 to 1998, Bikini Kill is a feminist punk band that started in Olympia, WA, and later moved to Washington, DC. Billy Karren joined Kathleen Hanna, Kathi Wilcox and Tobi Vail on guitar after the band had played several shows as a three-piece. Credited with instigating the Riot Grrrl movement in the early ’90s via their political lyrics, zines and confrontational live shows, Bikini Kill encouraged women and girls to start bands as a means of cultural resistance.

They used touring as a way to create an underground network between girls who played music, put on shows and made fanzines. This informal network created a forum for multiple female voices to be heard.

Bikini Kill started touring in June 1991, serving up their radical feminist punk rage to crowds across the US several times, as well as making their way through Europe, Australia and Japan. The band recorded and released a demo tape, two EPs, two LPs and three singles which are available via their independent label Bikini Kill Records.

The band has re-issued Pussy Whipped and Reject All American, available now on vinyl & CD for the first time since they went out of print. They also uploaded their entire catalog on streaming services. Now available for streaming on Spotify, Tidal and Apple Music, the catalog includes landmark releases from 1991’s Revolution Girl Style Now to 1998’s The Singles, which features production, guitar and vocals from Joan Jett.
