Bike Around the Block: Block Island Self-Guided Bike Tour
Block Island is an ideal biking destination, with beautiful vistas and intriguing sights at every turn. Plus, you don’t have to be an experienced cyclist to tackle the island terrain.
You can rent bikes on-island at several locations, or bring your own on the ferry. Either way, you’ll want to check out the Self-Guided Bike Tour, which consists of 12 stops, or stations, each positioned at an island highlight and marked with a circular signpost with a QR code in the center. Shoot the QR code on your phone to access minute-long videos at each station that tell you about what you’re seeing or the history of where you’re standing.
Stations Include:
- Tourist Center (off Water Street)
- Manisses Animal Farm
- Spring House Hotel
- South East Lighthouse
- Mohegan Bluffs
- Painted Rock
- Rodman’s Hollow
- Dead Eye Dick’s
- Fred Benson Town Beach
- Great Salt Pond, New Harbor
- North Lighthouse
- Water Street
The full route is about 16 miles, and includes a long, flat section along Corn Neck Road to the North Lighthouse at the island’s northern tip. Families and novice cyclists may want to opt for the shorter 7.5-mile loop that leads south along Spring Street to Southeast Light and then circles back to town via Mohegan Trail and Lakeside Drive. This route features a few hills, but nothing extreme. The tour ends at Water Street in New Shoreham, where you can reward yourself with something to eat or drink.
If you don’t want to bring your cell phone, wallet-size maps of the route with short descriptions of each station are available free at the Welcome Center (off Water Street, across from the ferry docks) and at most of the rental companies in town.

There is so much to learn about Block Island and so many ways to learn about it from locals! Tours of Block Island are one of the most popular ways to get around the island. Guided tours are offered by land (Taxi and Bike Tours), air (Helicopter Tours) and sea (Kayak tours, Harbor tours).
Taxi Tours:
Sure, you can read guide books, study maps, download apps and review online travel blogs. But the best way to learn the most about Block Island in the least amount of time is to take in the sights with a narrated taxi tour. And since there are no tour bus or trolley companies on the island, a taxi tour is the way to go.
In just about an hour’s time, you can travel the entire island, from the granite North Light overseeing the Block Island Wildlife Refuge at our northernmost point to the stunning Mohegan Bluffs, rising 150 feet above the sea below.
Many of the drivers are long-time island residents, so you’ll learn the all about the island of today and yesterday, while getting the inside track on where the locals like to eat, drink, shop, fish and enjoy sun and surf.
Most Block Island taxis fit between 8 and 11 people, so no worries about the whole gang fitting in if you’re with a group. Just head down to the Taxi Stand at Old Harbor to grab a cab, or you can call a taxi to pick you up wherever you’re staying. Links to Taxi's below.
Bike Tours:
Enjoy seeing the island on 2 wheels! Go at your own pace on the Self Guided tour or get a guide! Links to both below.
Helicopter Tours:
Seeing Block Island from above is a magical experience. Tours depart from the Island's only airport, on Center Road.
Water Tours:
Guided Kayak tours are available in Great Salt Pond, the Block Island Maritime Institute runs a Harbor Tour (from a boat) in the Summer Season, and some Charter boats offer tours as well. Links below.

Block Island Bicycle Tour
Few places in the Northeast are more ideally suited to bicycling than Block Island, where curving country lanes pass rugged bluffs and magnificent vistas alongside sweeping pastures and meadows. There are about 40 miles of road, most with mild grades as no point on the island is higher than 250 feet; there are a handful of reasonably challenging hills and bluffs, however. There really aren’t specific bike trails per se, but all of the island’s roads are appropriate for cycling. The self-guided Block Island Bicycle Tour, which hits many of the island’s highlights, is particularly fun. Bringing a bike over on the ferry is easy and inexpensive, and there are several businesses on the island that rent bicycles by the day, week, or the hour.
The Block Island Bicycle Tour
Perhaps the most fun and convenient way to experience Block Island’s beaches, bluffs, and bird sanctuaries is by bicycle, an eco-friendly and widely accepted mode of transportation for island visitors and locals alike. In 2014, the Block Island Tourism Council teamed up with so-new.org (a Southern New England tourism group) to create the Block Island Bicycle Tour, a self-guided, 7.5-mile loop that includes nine stops at island landmarks and attractions at the southern end of the island, with an option to extend the tour by 8.5 miles with three stops on the north end.
Each tour stop is marked with a station signpost; look for a blue and yellow bull’s-eye marker with a QR code at the center. Cyclists can use their cell phones to scan the QR code, allowing them to access a short informational video about each stop on the route along with a tour map directing them to their next destination.
The tour includes many of the island’s highlights, beginning at the Visitor’s Center directly adjacent to the ferry landing, (where you can also pick up a paper map of the tour route if you’d rather not use your phone), and continuing on to Abrams Animal Farm and the historic Springhouse Hotel, where American icons from Mark Twain to the Kennedy family have enjoyed the view from the enormous veranda. From there the route continues on to the Southeast Lighthouse, the spectacular Mohegan Bluffs, and Painted Rock, an island tradition that began in the 1960s and continues to this day. This first leg of the tour will take you on to Rodman’s Hollow nature preserve, and concludes at Dead Eye Dick’s, a former piano bar with great seafood and one of the best sunset views on the island.
More ambitious cyclists will want to follow the route to its end by continuing on to marker number 9 at Fred Benson Town Beach, then on to Great Salt Pond, a popular spot for kayaking and paddleboarding (several marinas here offer rentals), or simply enjoying the plant and animal habitat of the marshes. From here, continue another two miles north on Corn Neck Road to check out North Lighthouse, the northernmost point on the island. The area behind the lighthouse is a National Wildlife Refuge, with sandy paths and amazing ocean views.
The tour ends at marker number 12 in Old Harbor, where you’ll likely want to reward yourself with a treat from one of the many restaurants and shops on Water Street.
