With plenty of coastline to explore, you’ll also feel incredibly connected to nature, and instantly relaxed. And there’s so much character at every turn, from the cobblestone sidewalks of Thames Street, to the Georgian-style homes along the waterfront on Washington Street, and of course the Gatsby-era mansions that millionaires once called summer homes, it’s sure to be a memorable experience.

Best Things To Do On A Newport, RI Day Trip

If you’re looking for the best things to do in Newport, RI during a day trip, this list will help you plan the perfect day. And if you’re looking for help to plan the perfect itinerary to maximize your time while visiting Newport, be sure to scroll to the end of the list because I’ve got some tips that may help you!

1. The Cliff Walk

The Newport Cliff Walk is at the top of everyone’s list of the best things to do in Newport, and it’s honestly my favorite thing to do here as well, and completely worth the praise it receives. The Cliff Walk is a paved pedestrian path that hugs the coastline, and offers you amazing opportunities to see some of the best views in Newport. And the best thing about it? It’s completely free.

During the Cliff Walk, you’ll get to take in absolutely breathtaking views of the Atlantic, and encounter a few special places along the way that make for great picture spots, including Forty Steps, and the rocky coastline viewpoints along that stretch. Newport, RI is worth visiting just to experience the Cliff Walk.

The Cliff Walk is the best place to take in coastal view on a Newport, RI day trip.

How To Get To The Newport Cliff Walk

The Cliff Walk actually has a few access points, but the most popular is the beginning of the path which is close to Easton Beach, right by The Chandler Hotel. There are also access points to the path at Narragansett Avenue, Webster Street, Sheppard Avenue, Ruggles Avenue, Marine Avenue, Ledge Road and Bellevue Avenue. A popular place to start the path is at Forty Steps, and you would start at the Narragansett Avenue entrance to begin there.

Forty Steps is one of the best places to stop during your stroll along Cliff Walk.

Where To Park For The Newport Cliff Walk

I’m going to be honest with you, parking for the Cliff Walk can be tricky, especially in season (June-September), and even moreso on weekends. You’ll likely want to arrive knowing it could take some time to find a parking spot, but fear not! There are plenty of options, depending on how much you’re willing to pay, and how long you’re willing to look for free street parking.

Along Memorial Boulevard at Easton Beach, there is metered street parking, and this is the most convenient option if you want to start the Cliff Walk at the beginning. Easton Beach also has paid lots, and there are usually available spot since the lots are fairly large, but you’ll pay between $15-$25 to park for the day.

There is also a pay-by-plate lot at the Narragansett Avenue entrance, which is where you would want to park to start Cliff Walk at Forty Steps.

Before you arrive at Easton Beach, there are residential parking spots on the side streets off of Memorial Boulevard. In season, some may be permit parking only, but year-round, I’ve had some good luck finding free parking in that area. I’ll usually circle the area a few times and try and look for a spot (or simply Uber over from downtown, or walk to make it easier).

Tip : The city only charges for parking at Easton Beach and the Cliff Walk lots between Memorial Day and Labor Day, so if you take your Newport, RI day trip after Labor Day, or before Memorial Day, you’ll likely get free parking.

How Long Is The Newport Cliff Walk?

The Newport Cliff Walk is 3.5 miles long one way, so if you decide to walk the entire 3.5 miles to the end, be sure to plan for enough time to walk back.

Can You See The Mansions From The Newport Cliff Walk?

Many of the most famous mansions in Newport are on Bellevue Avenue, which runs parallel to Cliff Walk, so their back lawns face the Cliff Walk path. But, it’s actually hard to see some of them while walking on the path because they’re situated pretty far back from the water to avoid erosion issues. But, you can get a good look at The Breakers and a few others while strolling along Cliff Walk.

If you really want to see the best views of the Newport Mansions, though, I do suggest getting tickets to go inside, which will also allow you to explore their interiors, as well as back lawns where you can take in amazing views of the Cliff Walk from a different perspective.

View of The Breakers mansion from Cliff Walk. Both of these are two of the best things to do on a Newport, RI day trip.

2. Walk To Goat Island Lighthouse

Goat Island Lighthouse is a beautiful little lighthouse on (as I’m sure you’ve guessed) Goat Island. The island is part of the city of Newport, and is easily walkable from downtown Newport. In fact, it’s just about a mile from Bowen’s Wharf, which makes for a very pleasant excursion.

Be sure to visit Goat Island Lighthouse during your Newport, RI day trip to take in amazing views of the bridge.

Once you’re at the lighthouse, you’ll have some awesome views of the Newport Bridge, and also be on the grounds of the Gurney’s Resort & Marina, which has a lovely little path along Narragansett Bay, where you can often see sailboats cruising by (I even saw a sailing class for children from here, and it was such a cool experience).

A walk out to Goat Island is a really fun thing to do on a Newport, RI day trip, and provides awesome views of the bridge and water.

It’s worth the small trek out to Goat Island to escape the hustle of downtown and have some quieter moments by the lighthouse during your Newport, RI day trip.

3. Explore Bowen’s Wharf

Bowen’s Wharf is probably the most touristy part of Newport, and yet, it still feels really authentic and fun. And if anyone is a fan of the KJP brand from Instagram, you can find the Kiel James Patrick flagship store , owned by the creative husband and wife team, here at Bowen’s Wharf.

Bowen's Wharf is a must visit whenever you come to Newport.

At Bowen’s Wharf, you’ll be surrounded by sailboats bobbing in the water, and lots of unique shops and some really fun restaurants. On summer weekends, you’ll find crowds, too, but I think it’s absolutely worth visiting during your Newport, RI day trip.

4. Go Wine Tasting

A short 15 minute drive outside of downtown Newport, and you’ll find yourself at Newport Vineyards , where you can enjoy calming views of the grapevines and enjoy tasting some local wines. At Newport Vineyards, there are different options for basic tastings and flights, and also really nice farm-to-table dining experiences in a beautiful setting.

On-site is also Taproot Brewing Co. , so you could also sample some local beer while visiting, but more on that later on in this list.

5. Have Lunch Or Dinner At Castle Hill Inn

The absolute best hotel in Newport in the Castle Hill Inn , which sits right on the water and has amazing views from all over the property. But for a day trip to Newport, you can visit one of their two restaurants for lunch or dinner to enjoy the grounds.

I personally prefer The Lawn, which is a casual dining experience that offers both lunch and dinner on a terrace outside, and also has Adirondack chairs for drink service.

There is also the main dining room at the hotel, which has a more upscale feel and menu, and completely indoors.

After your lunch or dinner at Castle Hill Inn, I recommend taking a walk over to the lighthouse on their grounds. It’s such a cute little lighthouse to see in person, and also provide amazing coastal views.

Castle Hill Lighthouse is such a great place to visit on a Newport, RI day trip.

Tip : Both dining options take advanced reservations on Open Table to help you plan your Newport, RI day trip, and not waste time waiting for a table to open up. Click here to make your reservation .

6. Tour The Mansions

There are 11 mansions in Newport, RI that you can tour, but for a day trip, I would recommend picking one or two, depending on what else you’re interested in doing for the day.

If you can only do one, I highly suggest you choose The Breakers , which is the most popular (and I think the most exciting) to visit. This mansion was a summer house for the Vanderbilt family, and has 70 rooms, including over 40 bedrooms, and is extremely grand and opulent, and loaded with history. I personally think Newport, RI is worth visiting just to get a peek inside these gorgeous mansions.

The Breakers mansion in one of the most amazing things to see during a day trip to Newport, RI.

Getting its name from how the water would crash against the rocks, you can probably guess that this home is also ocean-front, and can be found along Cliff Walk (but if you remember, you really can’t see it from the Cliff Walk path, and it’s best to do an actual tour).

On-site at The Breakers is also a cafe where you can purchase food and drinks, and there is also free parking during your visit. Tickets can be purchased individually for just The Breakers, or you can buy a combination ticket to visit Marble House (which is next on my list!).

Marble House was also a Vanderbilt family summer home, and is most known as having a Chinese tea house built on the property. It’s a really exciting place to experience, and you can purchase either a Duo or Passport ticket to see multiple mansions, and get a bit of a discount. Marble House also has free on-site parking.

Other really fun mansions to tour are The Elms, Rosecliff and Kingscot. But for your first visit to Newport, The Breakers and Marble House are the best options (and I would say Rosecliff is a close third).

Tip : There are six mansions with audio self-guided tours that you can download prior to arrival. Click here to download the audio tours .

7. Go For A Ride On Ocean Drive

Ocean Drive is about 10 miles long, and one of the most scenic drives in the state. Even for a Newport, RI day trip, this is one of the best things to do.

During the drive, you’ll pass by a few mansions, Brenton Point State Park, Fort Adams, Gooseberry Beach and Hammersmith Farm, which is where Jackie Kennedy spend her childhood. You’ll, of course, also pass beautiful landscapes during the entire drive.

The views along Ocean Drive are really amazing and worth doing on a Newport, RI day trip.

Tip : To start your cruise along Ocean Drive, you can either begin in downtown Newport at Thames and Wellington, or outside of town at Ocean and Coggeshall Avenues (use these GPS coordinates: 41.45679261107366, -71.3102932106861). I personally think it’s better to start in-town because you’ll be driving on the right side of the road, closer to the water. But you really can’t go wrong with either.

8. Enjoy The Local Beer

While the local breweries aren’t right in downtown Newport, if you’re a fan of trying different brews, there are a few places that will be well-worth driving a short distance to.

We’ve already touched on Taproot Brewing Co. , which can be found at the Newport Winery, so be sure to add that to your list if you plan to go brewery hopping. There are also these really great breweries to try:

  • Newport Craft Brewing and Distilling for local beer and spirits tastings, as well as factory tours.
  • Coddington Brewing Co. for beer flights and a restaurant.
  • Rejects Beer Co. for local beers on tap, as well as comedy nights!

There are also some more breweries a bit further outside of Newport. If you’re up for it, Twelve Guns Brewing and Pivotal Brewing Company are located in Bristol, and The General’s Crossing Brewhouse is located in Jamestown.

9. Head To The Beach

Even for a Newport, RI day trip, you can still take a walk on the beach. The best beaches to visit in Newport are:

  • Easton Beach , which is the beginning of the Cliff Walk. You’ll often see surfer’s riding the waves here, and there are also public restrooms.
  • Gooseberry Beach is probably my favorite, and the prettiest beach in Newport, but it’s a bit trickier to visit. You must purchase a day pass in advance ( which you can do by clicking here ), but it’s also along Ocean Drive, so you can swing by during your drive and combine these two attractions.
  • Fort Adams Beach is a very small beach, but it also has plenty of free parking, and the park is also free to visit, so this is a great and easy option if you want to get to the water easily and without paying anything.

Gooseberry Beach in Newport is one of the best to visit.

10. Take A Sailing Tour

One of the absolute best things to do during a Newport, RI day trip is to head out onto the water. My favorite tour that I’ve done has been with Classic Cruises , which is a sailing tour on schooner Madeleine along Narragansett Bay. I’ve found the prices to be very fair for such a great experience, and it’s very easy to book online (I highly recommend booking at least 2-3 days in advance on weekends because they fill up fast).

The views from the water while sailing around the waters of Newport are incredible!

During my cruise with them, they provided lots of fun information about the area, and even offered to take pictures of everyone with the sails in the background. It was a great experience, and one of my favorite things I’ve done to make Newport, RI worth visiting.

11. Hit Up The Shops

Shopping in Newport is plentiful, and there’s a great mix of franchised stores and independent boutiques to pick from. Definitely be sure to walk down Thames Street if you’re looking for some unique finds.

But there are so many shops in Newport that you could spend your entire day visiting the shops and still not see them all.

Shore Soap Company is one of the best shops to visit on a Newport, RI day trip.

Best Shops In Newport, RI

If you’re looking to scope out the best shops and boutiques for your Newport, RI day trip, below is a list of my favorite places to pop into when I visit. Of course, there are tons of places to shop in Newport, and I always seem to discover a new favorite during each visit, but these are my staples:

  • Shore Soap Co. – The flagship store for this Rhode Island-based handcrafted soap company is always so fun to visit, and one of the reasons Newport, RI is worth visiting.
  • Kiel James Patrick – I’ve already mentioned them, but their store is really inspiring to visit in-person, and such a treat to peruse! This is a great place if you’re looking for modern/classic New England clothing.
  • Seashells in Bloom – A really lovely mix of jewelry and floral pieces made out of seashells.
  • Wald & Sea – An incredibly inspiring home goods boutique. I’m pretty sure I always leave here with something for our home!
  • The Space & Tea Exchange of Newport – A really fun place to re-stock your kitchen pantry, as well as find some cute and unique gifts.
  • Cottage & Garden – A amazingly curated boutique with antiques, garden decor, home goods and gifts.

12. Tour The City By Trolley

If you want to cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time, and also pass by some of the best mansions, and take a tour of Ocean Drive, then a trolley tour is definitely the way to go (and it’s pretty affordable!).

A trolley tour is a great way to get around Newport without having to worry about parking.

You’ll board an old-fashioned trolley at the Newport Bus Terminal, and cruise around the city for 90 minutes with a professional guide giving you all the best historic and interesting information about the city.

Tip : There is plenty of parking at the bus terminal, but it is paid. You’ll only need to spend about $3-$5 to park while you’re gone on the tour, though.

Click here to book your Newport, RI Trolley Tour!

13. Explore Fort Adams

We’ve touched on the beach at Fort Adams State Park, but you can actually explore the historic fortress, which is the largest and most complex coastal fortress in the U.S., and also a National Historic Landmark. Fort Adams has history dating back to 1824, and was an active fortress up until World War II, so there are so many stories and things to learn while visiting. And since it stands guard over Narragansett Bay, there are also wonderful water views to be had.

Fort Adams is an incredible historic attraction to visit when in Newport, RI.

Tip : To visit the fortress itself, you’ll need to purchase tickets for either self or guided tours. Parking is free!

14. Take A Lighthouse & Mimosas Cruise

If sailing isn’t your thing, Classic Cruises also offers a Lighthouse and Mimosas cruise, where you’ll get to see the area’s lighthouses, sip on delicious mimosas and snack on madeleine cookies.

The tour is 75 minutes long, and rather than boarding the Madeleine schooner, you’ll hop onto the Rum Runner II, a classic motor yacht that was originally built in 1929 to help mobsters smuggle alcohol during prohibition. So even just being able to say you were on a boat with such a cool history is pretty exciting, and this is definitely one of the best things to do in Newport, RI.

While the focus of the tour will be lighthouses, the crew will also be able to point out different locations along the way, and they’ll also play some fun music during the cruise to elevate the atmosphere.

15. Dine At America’s Oldest Tavern

The oldest tavern in the U.S. is the White Horse Tavern , and it can be found right in Newport! For an upscale but cozy dining experience, this is a must while on your Newport, RI day trip. The menu focuses on local seafood, and also has caviar service and a great raw bar, and offers a modern take of traditional New England cuisine (they always have vegetarian dishes as well for those who don’t eat meat).

When you visit Newport, RI for a day trip, you can dine at the country's oldest tavern!

For certain holidays throughout the year, they also have a great brunch, so for special occasions like Mother’s Day or Easter, this is a great place to consider if you happen to be visiting Newport to celebrate your mom, or during the spring holiday.

Reservations are definitely recommended, especially for weekends and special brunch experiences. Reservations can be made on their website via Open Table. Click here to make a reservation .

16. Tour The Historic Homes

While Newport is home to some of the most amazing Gilded Age mansions, it’s also have some beautiful residential homes and neighborhoods that are so fun to admire. If you walk away from the waterfront areas, you’ll be able to get lost in the historic streets and find gorgeous homes dating back to the 1600-1700s. These beautiful clapboard-style homes will often have plaques telling you when it was built, and come in all kinds of different colors. It’s always fun to stroll through the streets and imagine what life was like back when these beautiful homes were first built.

Touring the historic homes is a really great way to connect with history on your Newport, RI day trip.

17. Get A Lobster Roll At Newport Lobster Shack

If you’re looking to get an amazing lobster roll during your Newport, RI day trip, be sure to stop at Newport Lobster Shack . Located right in downtown at Long Wharf, this place is a casual little shack that serves up the best of New England fare like chowder, lobster bisque, lobster rolls, fish ‘n chips and fries. You’ll also find covered seating next to the shack overlooking the water.

A fresh lobster roll in New England is always a good idea.

The best part about Newport Lobster Shack is that everything is caught locally by fishermen in the Newport Fisherman Cooperative, so this will be some seriously fresh seafood! In the summer, there will be longer lines, but it’s definitely worth the wait. It’s also open year-round, so if you happen to visit during off-season, you’ll still be able to grab some delicious food.

Free Things To Do In Newport, RI

While most things in Newport cost money, there are some free things that you can do (some of which we’ve already covered on this list). Most of the free attractions and activities in Newport are outside of the city, so if you’re on a tight budget, you may have to leave Newport’s downtown area to get to some of the more budget-friendly places. Below is a list of free things to do in Newport, RI during your day trip.

Cliff Walk is such a great place to visit in Newport because it's completely free.

  • Fort Adams State Park Beach
  • Cruise Ocean Drive
  • Window shopping in downtown Newport and Thames Street
  • Bowen’s Wharf, Bannister’s Wharf & Long Wharf
  • Goat Island Lighthouse
  • Ballard Park
  • Beach parking will be free after Labor Day and before Memorial Day
  • Prescott Farms (Middletown)
  • Jamestown Windmill (Jamestown)
  • Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge (Middletown)
  • Beavertail Lighthouse (Jamestown)
  • Colt State Park (Bristol)

Forty Steps along Cliff Walk is a must-see for really beautiful views.

How Should I Spend A Day In Newport, RI?

The great thing about this destination is that most everything is fairly concentrated in the downtown area, so it’s very easy to plan your Newport, RI day trip. But if you’re a little overwhelmed and looking for help to make the best itinerary for your trip, I’ve put together a list of things to consider to help you make the most of your day.

The mansions are one of the best things to do when visiting Newport, RI.

Tip 1: For day trips, I always suggest arriving early and staying for dinner to really make the trip worth it. Arriving early is also nice because you won’t have to worry about parking areas filling up quickly, and you’ll be able to enjoy a couple of hours in the morning before most other tourists begin to arrive and fill the streets. I would suggest you try to arrive by 9a.

Tip 2 : Before your day trip, it’s a good idea to decide what you want to experience with the fewest crowds, and then plan to do that in the morning. For example, if you’re looking to experience the Cliff Walk without as many people, you may want to do that first thing when you arrive. Of if you’d like to experience downtown and Bowen’s Wharf while it’s still quiet and just as the shops begin to open for the day, do that first.

Tip 2.5 : I’ve been to Cliff Walk first thing in the morning, as just before sunset, and even though it’s really nice and pretty much deserted in the early mornings, it doesn’t ever feel too crowded in the late afternoons/early evenings. My personal tip would be to head into downtown Newport for some quiet moments in the morning.

Tip 3 : Plan your tours and your excursion to Goat Island Lighthouse (if you decide to do that) after lunch. This is when Newport will start to fill in with more people, and the tours and lighthouse will be a nice way to escape the crowds for a couple of hours.

Tip 4 : If there’s a restaurant you really want to visit, check and see if they take reservations. This is especially important during peak season and on weekends for dinner. This will eliminate wait times, and help you make the most of your time during your Newport, RI day trip.

Tip 5 : Since Cliff Walk/Bellevue Avenue are about a mile away from the shops and restaurants in downtown Newport, keep this in mind as you plan your day. Usually, I’ll start my Newport, RI day trip in the downtown area, then drive to Cliff Walk just before dinner, and end my day at Castle Hill Inn for dinner and sunset.

How To Get Around Newport, RI

The best ways to get around Newport are by walking, biking or driving. If you love to explore places by bike, Newport does have about 6 miles of designated bike lanes throughout the city, but keep in mind that traffic can be congested in peak season, and the bike lanes are not separate from the road.

Driving around Newport is easy, but you will run into traffic getting around the city during peak season. It’s best to park your car, and spend the day exploring by foot or bike.

Is Newport, RI Walkable?

Newport, RI is very walkable! To get to most attractions, you won’t walk more than a mile, and likely much less than that. Most of the shops and restaurants are concentrated together, and the only places that will require longer walks to get to would be Cliff Walk and Bellevue Avenue (where the best mansions are), and Goat Island Lighthouse. Those will all be about a mile from Bowen’s Wharf in downtown Newport, but the walk will be pleasant and easy.

If you’d like to explore Ocean Drive, this is one thing I don’t suggest you do by walking. Driving is definitely the way to go in this case.

If you’d like to visit Castle Hill Inn for lunch or dinner, you will have to drive there as well since it’s 4 miles outside of downtown Newport.

Is There Uber In Newport, RI?

Yes, Uber is available and easily accessible throughout the entire city of Newport. If you need to get from downtown Newport to Cliff Walk or Bellevue Avenue, and aren’t up for a walk, Uber is actually a great option so you don’t have to move your car.

Where To Park In Newport, RI

Parking in Newport can be tough and overwhelming if you don’t look into it ahead of time, and to keep your day trip as stress-free as possible, I highly suggest you research parking before your visit and have a plan in place. The parking area I really like and use every time I take a Newport, RI day trip is either the Newport Gateway Center Parking Lot, or the parking garage located right across the street at 1 W. Marlborough Street.

For an overview on your parking options, and tips for downloading the Newport parking app called Passport Parking, click here.

Once you get to your parking spot, I suggest you leave your car there all day, unless you don’t plan to come back downtown for the rest of the day (for example, if you leave downtown to do the Cliff Walk, and don’t plan to come back downtown, you can certainly leave the parking area to drive to the Cliff Walk).

Best Places To Eat During A Newport, RI Day Trip

Besides the places mentioned in the list (White Horse Tavern, Castle Hill Inn and Newport Lobster Shack) there are a few other places I love to eat at when I visit Newport. Here some of my other favorites:

  • Diego’s – Awesome Mexican place with amazing tacos, quesadillas and margaritas. Great outdoor patio at Bowen’s Wharf.
  • Wharf Southern Kitchen & Whiskey Bar – Great spot for small bites and drinks (think hush puppies, fried pickles and tater tots), or a nice dinner with very homey and Southern influence.
  • Brick Alley Pub & Restaurant – Really great casual place with a mix of comfort/pub food and seafood. A Newport staple.
  • Newport Sticks And Cones – Great ice cream place!
  • Look for stands all over downtown selling Del’s Lemonade!

Is Newport Better To Visit Than Providence?

Newport and Providence are both cities in Rhode Island that make for wonderful day trips and weekend getaways, but they’re very different, and one isn’t better than the other. Newport is worth visiting if you’re looking for a more upscale and ritzier feel with lots of opportunity to be by the water with the Cliff Walk, boating tours, beaches and tons of harbor-front walkways.

Providence is an under-rated city that has a more urban feel with lots of opportunities to experience local theater, incredible restaurants, tour prestigious universities like Brown and RISD, explore museums, visit a wonderful zoo and also a place where you can take romantic gondola rides up and down the calm river that runs through the city.

Depending on the vibe you’re looking for during your day trip, both make excellent options.

Definitely walk down to each wharf along the water in Newport.

Can You Take A Train From NYC To Newport?

No, Amtrak does not have a train that goes directly into Newport. You will need to take a train from NYC to Providence, and then take the ferry from Providence to Newport. Alternatively, you can also take a train from NYC to Kingston, and then take a Ride Share, taxi or car service to Newport.

This route isn’t recommended for a day trip, and is better for longer stays in Newport, as the entire journey will likely take 4 or more hours one-way. Keep in mind that the ferry only operates seasonally, so plan accordingly.

How To Get To Newport From Boston

The best way to get from Boston to Newport, RI is to drive, as there is no direct public transit route. The drive from Boston to Newport is about 1.5 hours, depending on traffic, which makes for a very easy day trip!

🚙 Need to rent a car for your Newport day trip? Click here to check out the best prices on Discover Cars!

If you don’t have a car and need to rely on public transit to get from Boston to Newport, there are a few options. You can either take a train from Boston’s South Station to Providence, and then a bus from Providence to Newport. Or, take a bus from South Station in Boston to Providence, and then another regional bus from Providence to Newport.

Once you arrive in Providence, it’s also possible to take the ferry from Providence to Newport, which takes 1 hour.

Best Time To Visit Newport

June-September is high season for Newport, with July and August bringing the most crowds. During this time, everything will be open, and you’ll experience the best weather, and most people will agree that Newport, RI is worth visiting during this time.

To avoid the crowds, I actually love visiting in May before Memorial Day, and in late September. Parking will be free at most lots and meters during these times, the weather is a bit more mild, and there are fewer crowds (but everything is still open).

Wandering around each wharf is one of the most fun things to do on a Newport, RI day trip.

What Is Newport, RI Known For?

Newport has become known for hosting the Newport Folk Festival, an internationally-recognized music festival where famous artists such as Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and Joan Baez have performed. Newport is also known for its lavish and historic Gilded Age mansions, as well as being widely considered as the Sailing Capital of the World.

Know More about this tour

After the downtown Boston pickups are completed, begin the 1.5-hour drive to Newport, Rhode Island. Enjoy a snack and listen to the guide provide a bit of history about Newport, a sailing destination for many that’s known as America's First Resort. The first stop is at the Breakers mansion, the grandest of Newport’s summer mansions and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and financial preeminence in turn-of-the-century America. Spend two hours here, part of which can be enjoyed with a self-guided audio tour. Don’t forget the photo-worthy ocean view behind the mansion. Then take a 1-hour narrated city tour of some other Newport sites. See the St. Mary’s Church complex. This National Historic Shrine is where President John F. It’s also the oldest surviving Jewish synagogue building in North America. Traveler Reviews

Loved every minute. Chris was a wonderful guide and gave us a great tour. It was super nice to have someone else do the driving and planning. So well organized!!!

Spectacular views, gorgeous American “castles,” charming town & wonderful guided history lesson. Couldn’t have been better. We are already planning our next trip that will include more Boston area attractions, and if we’re lucky, we’ll get Chris as our guide again.

We enjoyed the guide’s sense of humor and positive energy. In between stories were amazing! She also creates a lovely relaxing atmosphere.

This is the second trip I’ve taken with this company. Lucia was our driver on this trip and was again an excellent host. Snacks and bottled water are provided complimentary on the van. Traffic and time permitting, she makes extra stops. We stopped at a shipyard and the Lizzie Borden house. The RI coast is beautiful and the mansions are opulent. Downtown Newport is a cute waterside town with lots of shops and restaurants. There is actually good shopping there including some high end if you’re into that. I highly recommend Kirwin’s Ice Cream also. Hotel pickup was prompt and the planning was seamless. New England Trips really does a nice job and their service is great.

Lucia was great. Very well worth it. Two mansions were included, plus plenty of snacks and water. We also did tour of island and town. Full day and great way to end our vacation.

The tour was a great experience! The tour person was very knowledgeable of Newport and it’s history. The houses were AMAZING.

I had a great time. Nice day trip, tore guide was extremly nice and helpful. Lucia was a great tore guide who did a good job telling every about the trip and things we would see and history. Thanks for a great day.

Marble House was closed. No notice from you. Travelled across the country to see it. Would have canceled if you had notified me it would closed that day. I believe that is exactly the reason you didn’t notify me. It was closed for a flower show that had been scheduled months in advance. Plenty of time to notify ticket holders prior to the tour date.

A rewarding tour. The driver/tour leader was highly competent, friendly and helpful. We toured 2 homes and had enough time in each to explore the rooms. A very handy app provided lots of information in each house. We also had the chance to explore Newport town. For lunch.

Lucia was great! The breakers mansion was fascinating. The backyard view was incredible! The only drawback was that the marble mansion was closed. But the town and the elms mansion compensated for it. I wish to go back again someday to see the marble mansion.

Very efficient booking and tour service. Everything was smooth and easy – from booking the tour online, to arranging for the pick up place and on the tour itself. The 14-seater bus was spacious and comfortable enough. Snacks were provided on the trip making it quite a worry-free and enjoyable one. These little things do matter :) Newport is a charming place and the Newport Mansions breath-taking. The pace was just right. Would definitely use them again, this time for Martha’s Vineyard!

Boston Traveler: Sightsee, Sail, and Sip in Newport This Summer

The little City by the Sea is serving up big fun this season.

From day trips to weekend getaways, our biweekly Traveler newsletter shows you the best of New England and beyond.

boston day trip to newport

Newport has always been an ideal destination for Bostonians looking for a quick day trip. But if you feel like you’ve “been there, done that,” think again. With splashy new luxury hotels and enticing restaurants and activities, you now need more than just a day or two to explore all this bustling seaside town has to offer.

Ogling Gilded Age mansions along the famed 3.5-mile Cliff Walk remains a must, especially for those new to the area. But if you’d prefer to keep away from crowds, Fort Adams State Park (home to the Newport Jazz Festival, held this year July 30 through August 1) and Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge are also scenic spots to enjoy a leisurely stroll.

For a touch of culture, the Newport Art Museum showcases more than 3,000 works from the 18th century to the present day. The International Tennis Hall of Fame started welcoming visitors again in April and features a fascinating exhibit called “The Original 9,” which tells the story of the women who took a stand against wage discrepancies in the professional game. And God’s Little Acre , an African Colonial cemetery, gives new life to the story of people involved in the transatlantic slave trade.

Thrill seekers, meanwhile, will also find plenty to keep them busy. Family-friendly Rail Explorers USA , which opened in 2017 in nearby Portsmouth, lets you literally ride the rails as you pedal your way down decommissioned train tracks with views of Narragansett Bay and magnificent homes. For an even more adventurous diversion, the America’s Cup Yacht Racing Experience allows guests to hoist the mainsail and race along the bay in authentic 12-meter sailing yachts.

Quench your thirst after a long day of sightseeing at Newport Vineyards : Spread over 100 acres of farmland, the complex is New England’s answer to Napa after undergoing a multimillion-dollar renovation that greatly expanded its restaurant, on-site brewery, and vineyards. When it’s time to dine, head to the newly opened Stoneacre Garden , which serves up farm-to-table dishes on its glorious rooftop deck—or take advantage of the restaurant group’s picnic service, which offers delightful spreads set up in some of Newport’s most beautiful settings. Then savor a nightcap at the Salvation Café , a hidden gem beloved by locals for its tiki-inspired cocktails and mojito bar. Just don’t tell anyone else about it.

GETTING THERE

It takes less than two hours on Route 24 to reach Newport’s shores. Or enjoy a leisurely 2.5-hour ride on Amtrak, which has eight departures from Boston to Newport daily.

STAYING THERE

The 57-room Brenton Hotel is one of Newport’s newest waterfront luxury properties, offering intriguing amenities such as sunset cruises on a private yacht and a rooftop bar with spectacular views of the harbor. The 84-room Hammets Hotel , another new property on the wharf, pays homage to the working-class maritime roots of the city with nautical-themed design touches throughout.

I love this list! Boston is such a cool city and I love the idea of spending more time there and venturing out so this list is so helpful!

So many great day trip options from this city! Nice when there is that option, for travellers, it means you can extend your holiday. Make Boston your home base and see some of those smaller towns you have listed. I would love to see more of the nature, in New Hampshire, like Mount Major or Massachusetts with Martha’s Vineyard.

Such great day trip plans even a month of stay there will not suffice to experience it all! The short day trips really sound good and doable. I have not been to Boston yet, but hopefully I will some day with this helpful post! Great pic to go with the post.

Wow! So many things to do. It would really be worthwhile to make Boston a base for a week and do these trips to immerse yourself in the region.

Visiting the east coast has always been something i’ve wanted to do. I’ve seen Boston & DC but that’s about it! Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, Main, I want to see them all!

Funny enough I’ve heard most of these day trips destinations from Boston although I don’t know their locations to Boston. I would like to visit most of them, but I think Fall be the best time?

Some of the locations are close enough for a day trip but would plan an early start in the day because even though they are close enough for a day trip, traffic can play a big factor especially during rush hours… planning a trip to the South Shore or Cape Cod offers only 2 travel lanes for most of the trip once you are on Route 3 which starts in Braintree which is about 9 miles south of Boston and the from Braintree to the beginning of the cape it’s about 45 miles or so… I mention this trip because I am very familiar with this section of MA and I live in Plymouth which is about 10 miles from Cape Cod… The Fall or Spring would be best as far as traffic to the cape but many places close down from Oct to Apr because many businesses depend on tourists during the Summer.

You are right about Boston traffic being a bugger. It is always best to consult Google traffic before leaving, start early or consider public transport. I love travelling in shoulder season.

While there’s still so much to see and do on my actual Boston list, I *did* take a day trip from Boston during one of my visits. We followed your recommendation to visit Providence, RI, and had a lovely day!

I just love the northeast and you’ve given me even more places to explore up there! Perfect fall long weekends!!!

Cape Cod, Massachusetts would be my #1 choice. Haven’t been since I was little and have such fond memories!

I have been to Boston several times now and even took a trip up to Maine & Connecticut once but I have been quite lax on visiting the other areas. For me, I really want to see more of the New England Coastal areas like Providence and I know Darcee would love to see Martha’s Vineyard!

Enjoy history and picturesque seaport towns on these Newport, Rhode Island day trips

Newport is ideally situated for exploring the history and natural beauty of southern New England.

Delve into its historic relics from the past, amble through picturesque seaport towns or soak up a sunset at one of the region’s most beautiful beaches on these day trips from Newport .

Roger Williams Park in Providence, Rhode Island

Providence, Rhode Island

Why go: For a taste of city life

Rhode Island’s creative capital is an urban escape from Newport’s seaside splendor when you need a break from the summer crowds. This state capital and college town has undergone a renaissance in recent decades and today is one of New England’s hippest cities.

Use The Avenue Concept app to take a self-guided tour of Providence’s colorful murals and vibrant public art. Get a taste of the city’s bustling food scene on a Rhode Island Red food tour, or try the local brews at The Guild PVD’s  beer garden on the Providence Pedestrian Bridge.

While taking in the skyline views, stroll over to Plant City , a plant-based food hall, or pick up a tasty treat at one of the many food trucks located downtown. Give your legs a break and explore downtown on the water with a boat tour , kayak rental, or even a gondola ride .

Finish off your day with a coffee and cannoli in DePasquale Square in Federal Hill, Providence’s “Little Italy” district.

How to get to Providence: Providence is an hour-long car drive from Newport. Head west on Route 138 across the Newport Pell Bridge, Cross over the island of Jamestown until you reach Route 1 north. Follow this to Route 4 north and merge onto Interstate 95 north to Providence. For a more relaxing option, try the Newport-Providence ferry , which operates seasonally.

Best vegan restaurants in Providence, Rhode Island

Mystic River Bridge in Connecticut

Mystic, Connecticut

Why go: For the seafaring history

Newport has its share of historic relics, but Mystic Seaport brings that past to life through a recreated 19th-century seafaring village and living history museum. A perfect spot to bring kids who enjoy getting hands-on with learning, families can watch coopers and blacksmiths at work and tour onboard historic vessels such as the Charles W. Morgan, the world’s last surviving wooden whaleship.

Before leaving town, stroll through the scenic downtown district, with its restaurants, boutiques, and independent toy shop. Stop for a slice at the classic Mystic Pizza (the inspiration for the movie by the same name) and grab a cool treat at Mystic Drawbridge Ice Cream while watching the boats sail under the lifted bridge. On the drive back, stop in Westerly, Rhode Island for a ride on the Flying Horse carousel .

How to get to Mystic: Mystic is an hour’s drive from Newport on Route 138 west to Interstate 95 south, or you can take the scenic route along the coast on Route 1A and Route 1.

Plymouth, Massachusetts

W h y go: To learn about the Wampanoag culture

Plymouth is a seaside town that played an important and complicated role in U.S. history. It was here the Pilgrims first arrived and began colonizing the Indigenous homeland of the Wampanoag.

The nearby Plimoth Patuxet Museums provide a glimpse into the Wampanoag people and what life was like in a 17th-century English settlement.

Downtown at the State Pier, board a full-scale reproduction of the Mayflower , the ship that first brought the Pilgrims to Plymouth in 1620.

From late spring through October, ships depart Plymouth harbor to the whale feeding grounds at the Stellwagen Bank Sanctuary with a high probability of viewing these majestic creatures. Grab some fresh seafood at Cabby Shack on the town wharf before heading back to Newport.

How to get to Plymouth: It’s just under two hours from Newport by car. Head north on Route 24 towards Fall River and continue until you reach Route 44 east towards Plymouth.

Boston Harbor at night

Boston, Massachusetts

Why go: Delve into American history

With a rich Revolutionary War history and captivating neighborhoods to explore, Boston is an essential day trip from Newport.

Youngsters will be delighted to throw “tea” into the harbor at the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum , while a guided tour on the Freedom Trail will resonate with older adolescents who have learned a little about American history.

Head inside to one of Boston’s many museums, including the distinctive Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum or the interactive Boston Museum of Science . Pick up something to eat at one of the many food stalls in the touristy Faneuil Hall , Eataly or the locally-focused Boston Public Market .

Don’t forget to taste test the cannolis from Mike’s Pastry and Modern Pastry in the North End and solve the age-old dispute of which bakery is better.

How to get to Boston : Boston is an hour-and-a-half north of Newport by car on Route 24 north to the Interstate 93 expressway, or, take an Amtrak or MTA train from Providence to Boston’s South Station to avoid downtown Boston’s high parking fees.

How to spend the perfect weekend in Boston

Salem, Massachusetts graveyard

Salem, Massachusetts

Why go: Get into the spooky holiday

If you’re visiting in the fall, a day trip to the historic town of Salem is a spooky way to celebrate Halloween while enjoying the beautiful autumn palettes on display in this seaside town. From the brilliant yellow Ginkgo leaves carpeting Armory Park, to the orange and red leaves framing the Derby Wharf Lighthouse, this part of New England really puts on a show.

The Salem Witch Museum provides a background to the tragic Salem witch trials, while a ghost tour will introduce you to the elusive specters that some believe haunt the town. Less macabre, the House of the Seven Gables , is a national historic landmark and setting of Nathaniel Hawthorne's novel of the same name.

Before you leave, make time to walk along the waterfront and tour the Friendship of Salem , a replica of a 1797 East Indiaman tall ship. Indulge in some lobster mac and cheese or a juicy lobster roll at Finz Seafood and Grill before the drive back.

How to get to Salem : Salem is under two hours by car from Newport, just north of Boston off of Interstate 95.

Springfield, Massachusetts

Toddlers and the young at heart will get a kick out of the playful Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum and Dr. Seuss Sculpture Garden. Thrill-seekers will enjoy hair-raising adventures at the Six Flags New England amusement park just outside of town. Be sure to stock up on holiday gifts or make your own candles at the Yankee Candle Village , and don’t miss a stroll through the Christmas Bavarian Village to get into the holiday spirit.

Fall River, Massachusetts

Why go: For the military history

Military buffs will appreciate walking the decks of the five National Historic Landmark U.S. Naval ships and other craft at Battleship Cove , America’s Fleet Museum in Fall River. Dive in and see what it is like to be a sailor on a Navy warship in World War II or the Vietnam War.

Stop in at Patti’s Pierogis and sample some of the many flavors of these traditional Polish dumplings.

How to get to Fall River: Fall River is just a mere half-hour north of Newport by car on Route 24, making for an easy day or half-day trip.

A classic Cape Cod lobster roll

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Why go?: For a beachy retreat

When you’re craving wide, soft sand beaches, rolling dunes and spectacular sunsets plan a day trip to Cape Cod . For a shorter day, stick to the beautiful beaches of the Upper Cape, including the calm waters of Mayflower Beach in Dennis, where you can walk out for hundreds of feet and search for shells and sand dollars when the tide is low. Or, try Old Silver Beach in Falmouth and jump on the Shining Sea Bike Path from Falmouth down to Woods Hole.

If you are willing to drive a little further, a visit to the Cape Cod National Seashore includes gorgeous beaches, hiking trails, and inland saltwater ponds. Stop for a brilliant sunset at Skaket Beach and enjoy some fresh seafood at Nauset Fish and Lobster Pool before heading back up Cape.

How to get to Cape Cod: It takes a little over an hour by car to get to Cape Cod from Newport, and can increase depending on how far out on the Cape you want to go and traffic. Just head up Route 24 to Interstate 195 and turn east and cross the Bourne Bridge onto the Cape.

18+ Best Day Trips From Boston For Families

Posted on Published: 12/03/2023

Boston is so centrally located in New England. It’s the perfect spot for a family vacation because you’ll be able to see a wide variety of family attractions, including cultural and historic spots.

In addition, you can stay at a hotel in Boston and take several different day trips – seeing different attractions and maybe even a different state. Within a short driving distance, you’ll find historic towns, coastal cities, family attractions, and sandy beaches. While there are so many different options, here are some of our favorite day trips from Boston.

Disclosure: Note that we’ve received complimentary admission to some of the Boston day trips and attractions mentioned here. All opinions are my own. This post contains affiliate links and a purchase through one of these links may result in a commission paid to us.

The Best Day Trips From Boston

Table of Contents

Boston Harbor Islands, MA

This is one of the easiest day trips from Boston . You won’t even need a car to get there. During the summers, you can head to the ferry at Long Wharf in Boston. There, you can board for a short trip to one of the several islands making up the Boston Harbor Islands State and National Park.

These islands offer a variety of different amenities and programs, so review everything before deciding where to go. There’s no “best” Boston Harbor Island – it will really depend on what you want to do.

There are different ferries going to the different islands, so you’ll want to know which one you are choosing before getting to Long Wharf and purchasing ferry tickets. Food options vary on the islands, so research in advance so you aren’t left hungry.

We’ve enjoyed a trip to Spectacle Island, where my kids were able to explore tide pools and hang out on the small beach. Some of the islands also have great spots for exploring, so plan and pack appropriately. Many families enjoy traveling to Georges Island, which is the most popular island.

There, you’ll find a Civil War-era fort that you can walk around. Georges Island is often the first stop on the ferries to the other islands, so you may be able to combine it with another island.

Portsmouth, NH harbor

Portsmouth, NH

Right over the New Hampshire border is Portsmouth NH, a coastal town filled with shops and restaurants. There’s also the Water Country water park and several outdoor parks. It’s located about an hour outside of Boston. Despite its location in another state, it’s actually pretty close to Boston and is a great spot for a day trip.

Grab lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants for some gorgeous views. History lovers may enjoy a trip to Strawbery Banke Museum, a living history museum. I love shopping around the small town.

The Breakers Exterior

Newport, RI

Less than a two-hour drive from Boston, you’ll find Newport Rhode Island, where you can step into the gilded age. This gorgeous town is a vacation destination in itself. Newport was once the preferred summer vacation spot for rich families including the Vanderbilts, who owned the Breakers and Marble House mansions as summer homes.

Both of these properties, as well as other Newport Mansions , are available to tour during your trip to Newport. Arrive early, as these properties get busy, especially during the weekends. They are open seasonally, so check out operating hours before

You can also take a boat ride, visit the International Tennis Hall of Fame, check out a baseball game, shop, eat, and so much more while you are in Newport. It’s definitely a place that you could visit for more than one day.

But, if you only have time for a day trip, I’d focus on seeing one mansion (probably the Breakers) and then heading to Brick Marketplace/Thames Street. There, you’ll find quaint shops and restaurants right on the waterfront.

Newport is also home to beautiful amazing beaches, as well as the Cliff Walk. If you are doing a day trip from Boston, leave early so that you can enjoy all of these attractions. It’s located on Aquidneck Island which is accessed via bridges.

See more things to do in Newport with kids here .

Mystic Seaport exterior

Right over the RI border is Mystic, CT, located less than a two hour drive from the downtown area of Boston. There, you’ll find Mystic Seaport, the largest maritime museum in the United States. It’s mostly outdoors, so it’s a great place to visit in nice weather.

Kids also love the Mystic Aquarium, which is one of my favorite aquariums to visit. Don’t miss the Beluga whales! Mystic Aquarium features the largest outdoor beluga whale exhibit in the United States. The whales are so interactive and fun to watch.

Across the street from the Mystic Aquarium is Olde Mistick Village, where you’ll find shops and restaurants in a quaint little historic village. It’s fun to walk around there, and there are several restaurants where you can grab lunch.

See things to do in Mystic here. While it’s a great day trip, you could also stay one or two nights here.

Cape Cod is one of the most popular vacation destinations in New England. While I’d probably recommend that you’d stay overnight (just like Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket), you could also go to the Cape for a day trip . It offers beautiful beaches, fantastic outdoor activities, and delicious, fresh seafood.

In the busy season, you’ll want to arrive at the beaches early. Cape Cod traffic is notoriously bad, so it’s best to drive at an off-peak time. It’s one of the most popular tourist destinations in the area, especially in the summer.

Some of the best places to visit on Cape Cod include:

  • Provincetown

While you are there, make time for some of the famous ice cream and lobster rolls you can get in the summer months.

Plimoth Plantation garden

Plymouth, MA

Any history trip to Boston should include a day in Plymouth, MA. There, you can see Plymouth Rock, and explore Plimoth Plantation (which was recently renamed Plimoth Patuxet Museums). If your vacation plans include a trip down to the Cape Cod National Seashore, you’ll find Plymouth on the way. But you definitely only need a day there, so it’s an easy day trip from Boston.

There are plenty of delicious restaurants and great shops in Plymouth as well. If you have limited time, I’d recommend only going to Plimoth Plantation. Plymouth Rock, while famous, is pretty disappointing in person.

Rockport Massachusetts Motif #1

Rockport, MA

North of Boston is Cape Ann, where you’ll find Rockport, MA . This quaint seaside village is one of my favorite places to visit for the day. Bearskin Neck is the perfect spot to visit for an afternoon.

It offers shops, restaurants, and art galleries. You’ll also want to photograph Motif #1, an iconic fishing shack that is one of the most photographed buildings.

There are also several beaches on Cape Ann – including several in Rockport.

Gloucester waterfront

Gloucester, MA

Right next door to Rockport on Cape Ann is Gloucester MA . Famous from the TV show Wicked Tuna, as well as the movie The Perfect Storm, Gloucester is a fun seaside town known for delicious seafood.

In addition to the waterfront restaurants, you’ll also find several beaches in Gloucester (Good Harbor is our favorite). Many whale watching cruises leave from this town as well. In my opinion, Gloucester is the perfect day trip for a beach day.

Lobster roll with chowder

Kittery, ME

Kittery Maine is the first Maine town that you’ll find right over the New Hampshire border by Portsmouth, NH. It’s mostly known for some fabulous outlet shops. There are several outlet malls, all located on the same street. It’s easy to drive to each plaza, park, and shop.

During your day in Kittery, Maine, you can also explore Fort McClary State Park and be adventurous at Take Flight Adventures. Be sure to stop at one of the many seafood restaurants and stands to pick up a delicious lobster roll.

Options include Bob’s Clam Shack and Robert’s Maine Grill (where the lobster roll and chowder pictured above came from). While in Kittery, you’ll also want to stop at Yummies, a store filled with all kinds of candy.

If you want, you can combine a trip with Kittery with a stop in Portsmouth, NH. They are in different states but are adjacent. It’s easy to visit both.

See things to do in Kittery here.

Concord, MA

If you want to visit Walden Pond , made famous by Henry David Thoreau, you’ll need to head to Concord, MA. Located about 40 minutes from Boston, Concord is also home to Minute Man National Historical Park. If you don’t have a car or don’t want to drive, there’s also a commuter rail station in Concord.

If you do choose to drive, you can also visit Lexington, home of historic sites from the Revolutionary War. Head to Lexington Common (Battle Green), the start of the American Revolution. History lovers may enjoy the Liberty Ride, a guided tour through Lexington and Concord with costumed guides.

Salem Witch Museum

Home to the infamous Salem Witch Trials , Salem, MA is about 50 minutes from the city. Almost everything that you’ll want to see in the coastal city of Salem is located right in the same area. Once you arrive for your day trip to Salem , you can park and walk around without needing your car.

In addition to several museums dedicated to the Salem Witch Trials (the Salem Witch Museum is one popular museuem) and The House Of The Seven Gables (made famous by the Nathaniel Hawthorne novel, you can also explore the Peabody Essex Museum right in the city.

The museum features a large collection of Asian art and hosts lots of family activities throughout the year. It’s closed on Mondays, so be sure to visit on a different day.

Salem is located on the waterfront, so you’ll also be able to do a short boat trip or tour. There are also many walking tours of the city if you want some guided narration while you are visiting.

Sturbridge, MA

West of Boston, you’ll find Sturbridge, MA. Anyone interested in history may enjoy a trip to Old Sturbridge Village, a living history museum. It’s a little over an hour from Boston and is an easy drive down the Mass Turnpike. Purchase tickets online in advance to save time in line.

Springfield, MA

This city, located about 90 minutes from Boston, features a number of family-friendly attractions. Sports fans will want to visit the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. It’s several floors of sports memorabilia, as well as a full basketball court. You’ll probably want to plan to spend a couple of hours there.

There’s also a relatively new Dr. Seuss Museum that younger kids will enjoy.

Wrentham, MA

Want to shop for bargains on brand names? Wrentham Massachusetts is home to the Wrentham Village Premium Outlets, where you’ll find high-end outlets including Burberry, Bose, Coach, kate spade, and Tory Burch. It’s a short drive from Boston.

Getting There

For most of these day trips from Boston, you’ll probably want to rent a car. There are other options to getting to some of the places, including Amtrak train (to Mystic and north to Maine on the Downeaster ), commuter rail, and ferry. In most cases, driving is the easiest, and parking isn’t too difficult unless you are going to a beach in the summer.

You may also find that you want to stop at more than one location, making it useful to have a car. Many of these towns are spread out, and walking everywhere isn’t an option. If you don’t have a car rental for your Boston vacation, you should be able to just rent one for the day.

  • LyraeT 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Absolutely fabulous - highly recommended! HI there, Myself and my two daughters took this tour on our recent trip to Boston. Derek (our driver and guide) arrived at our hotel bang on time, our meeting time arrangements, pickup and locations were simple and efficient. Derek had a wealth of knowledge being a local - had loads of information, Boston and local history, movie locations, anecdotes of famous characters, the Boston Tea Party and how the Revolution kicked off, being from the area he knew loads. The movie locations were amazing, Derek knew all the great locations of movies from The Town, The Departed, Gone Baby Gone, Good Will Hunting, even stopping at bars and pubs from the movies for a bevvy, telling us little tidbits about the movies, TV shows and locations that only the locals know - all in the comfort of his amazing Audi (not sure of the model but a big comfy one). We went all over Boston, to world class bakeries in the North End, over to Charlestown, South Boston, Boyleston Street, taking us to some special places, retail shops etc again only the locals know about.. One cool thing, Derek put on a scene from the movie 'The Town' on his dash screen we could watch as we actually drove past it - fabulous! I cannot recommend this tour enough - Derek was fun, informative and professional. Do yourself a favor if you're into movie location tours or history, or just as a 'Get to know Boston' introduction Derek can customize your tour basically to what interests you - my daughters and I had a fabulous time and came away with so much local knowledge... We loved our time in this amazing city! Highly recommended. Read more Written November 13, 2019
  • dyannd57 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Boston Derek was great and a lot of fun! He made the tour seem more like a new friend showing you around his city instead of those official tour guides that stick to a script and site. The flexibility that allows you to modify and suggest specific sites you would like to see made the tour even better. Derek is very knowledgeable and was more than willing to answer any questions or provide suggestions on places to eat or see. A great way to see Boston. Read more Written November 5, 2019
  • 07lisa09 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Do Not book This Tour I booked this tour two weeks in advance through Viator and received a confirmation email. I was in Boston for one day visiting from a cruise ship. On the day of the cruise I called the limo service 15 minutes prior to the tour to let them know of our location. 20 minutes later the limo service called me back to tell me our tour was canceled stating they didn’t have a driver for the tour. They explained they called Viator to cancel and Viator told them not to contact us the clients, and Viator would contact us. I never received a phone call, email or refund notification that the tour was canceled from either company. When I called Viator they told me the tour was confirmed. They called the limo service and the limo service explained to Viator the tour was canceled. I had to ask Viator to issue me a refund as they still didn’t understand what was happening. I was traveling with my 80 year old parents and Viator couldn’t offer me a reason why the communication didn’t take place between the limo service and their company. I explained how disappointed I was because if I had known the day before the tour was canceled I could have made alternate plans. If you are looking for a reliable tour to take place on the date and time you booked do not book this tour. No one will contact you if it’s canceled and you will be left wondering what happened with little explanation or customer service. This was a terrible situation to be in an unfamiliar place when it’s hot and with elderly parents. This experience was with Viator, but since the tour is offered on Trip Advisor I want to make potential customers aware of the situation was in as the limo company could just as easily cancel a confirmed reservation with Trip Advisor with little to no warning. • David K 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles The only way to go! Derek was excellent. To have a private driver take you on a tour of Boston makes the experience so much more enjoyable. You pick and choose where and what you want to see and do. I wanted to incorporate part of the Freedom Trail route with this tour and he kindly accommodated that. I love that there’s no rush or following a crowd aimlessly. It was in, out and go - important when time is of the essence. We got great tips about where to eat in Boston and we even stopped to buy one of the infamous Boson cream pies from the best bakery in Boston. When we got notice that our flight was delayed for five hours Derek dropped us to the train station so we could catch the Amtrak to NYC. This turned out to be a saviour as it was ultra comfortable and so enjoyable (we will never fly from NYC to Boston again ) plus we ended up ten minutes from where we were staying in Manhattan. We had spent a day in Boston, ostensibly for a campus tour of Harvard for my daughter, but also to learn as much as possible about the birth of Independence, as quickly as possible. The Flexibility with Derek allowed for that, plus we went in the afternoon which was the only time we could go and other tours only left in the morning. Super commentary too, insightful and funny. We left so much more knowledgeable than when we started. We were only two people but if you had six it would be much cheaper per person. Plus with the SUV you feel safer and you could see much more. Derek is an excellent driver and he knew when traffic would be busy and worked the schedule around that. All in all it was a super experience. Read more Written August 2, 2019

  • shawnW673 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Bad driver experience—rough 4 hours If we had a better driver, this would be a very different review. Here’s my experience. (And if you look at my other reviews, they’re normally very positive. I also tried to email the company before writing this review, but their supplied email doesn’t work.) I booked the 3 hr private Freedom Trail Tour several months in advance as I wanted my two teenage nieces and I to end our cruise in Boston on a high note. The company had strong reviews on Trip Advisor and was described as high-end. This was not our experience. Our guide’s English was hard to understand—my teenage nieces understood little of the conversation—but that was minor compared to our other complaints. Here’s a detailed listing: 1) when he picked us up (a tad after the meeting time, vs most drivers who are there waiting for us) he had a cup of Dunkin’ Donuts coffee in his hand. The front seat was full of various personal stuff that he had to move aside so I could sit down. Way too casual and messy vs what I was expecting. 2) he immediately told us that the car we had was an upgraded vehicle (it was a basic SUV) that should cost an extra $150. It took a lot of conversation before we clarified that there was no extra charge. He also told me the customary tip was 20-25% (!) very off-putting and a poor start before we were even out of the cruise terminal. 3) He had the drivers seat pushed all the way back, and the seat inclined all the way back, so my (petite) 13-yo niece had the seat pressing against her legs. After the first stop, I asked him to move up his seat so my niece had leg room—he gave her about an inch or so. She was uncomfortable the entire tour. 4) the front seat was so full of his stuff I had his constantly-buzzing cellphone by my leg and his gum and other stuff sliding off the console onto my lap. 5) the entire time it was clear he had a bad cold or some kind of sinus infection. I even asked him about it early on, hoping he’d get the hint and take an allergy pill or something. He coughed, snorted and hacked nonstop. Only once, at the end of almost 4 hours, did he even bother covering his mouth when he coughed. Extremely gross and my nieces were freaked out. 6) it was a blistering hot day, hours-long tour, and we were offered no beverages. I’ve had Lift drivers provide cold water, but nothing from him. 3-1/2 hours in, I saw a water bottle in the pocket by my door and said, “is this for us?” and proceeded to confiscate it for my nieces and I. He didn’t seem pleased. We did enjoy seeing Boston, but dreading every time we were in the vehicle. It was a bad experience. I travel extensively and have lots of drivers/tours for comparison. This experience fell far short of my expectations and the description of services. Read more Written July 9, 2019

We were picked up at our hotel and after a very interesting and informative tour he dropped us off at or hotel at the end.We never felt like we were on the clock...such a nice experience. It was perfect from beginning to end. We had our two grandkids with us and he gave tons of historical information and loads of jokes to keep us all happy and invested. Last week we went to Boston and were travelling with two seniors with mobility issues and a 7 month old and a 3 year old so we booked with Elite Limo for quite a few runs throughout the week including airport transfers. They were always on time, the cars were immaculate and in good condition. Derek ended up driving us for the week and he was so pleasant, easy to talk to and fun it made a great stress free week for us. One night we got dropped off to a restaurant that didn't turn out to be what we expected and had to call Derek to turn right around and come back for us to take us to another restaurant and he did it with no problem or complaints. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this service and we will be using them again in August on our return. Read more Written June 12, 2019

  • Fort Adams State Park Beach
  • Cruise Ocean Drive
  • Window shopping in downtown Newport and Thames Street
  • Bowen’s Wharf, Bannister’s Wharf & Long Wharf
  • Goat Island Lighthouse
  • Ballard Park
  • Beach parking will be free after Labor Day and before Memorial Day
  • Prescott Farms (Middletown)
  • Jamestown Windmill (Jamestown)
  • Sachuest Point National Wildlife Refuge (Middletown)
  • Beavertail Lighthouse (Jamestown)
  • Colt State Park (Bristol)

How Should I Spend A Day In Newport, RI?

The great thing about this destination is that most everything is fairly concentrated in the downtown area, so it’s very easy to plan your Newport, RI day trip. But if you’re a little overwhelmed and looking for help to make the best itinerary for your trip, I’ve put together a list of things to consider to help you make the most of your day.

How to Get to Newport Beach

Neighborhoods to visit in newport beach, how to get around newport beach.

John Luciano/Courtesy of Pelican Hill Resort

The city of Newport Beach in Southern California’s Orange County is known for its beaches, surfing, boating, shopping, and luxurious lifestyle. It’s a destination for dining in upscale restaurants or casual pubs and shopping in exclusive designer shops or browsing in beachfront boutiques. Its harbor is home to seagoing vessels from electric Duffy boats to multi-million dollar yachts, and the vibe is an eclectic mix of upscale, casual, beachy, and refined.

“The city boasts several micro-neighborhoods," Orange County food and travel writer Jenn Tanaka told Travel + Leisure. "Historic beach cottages at Crystal Cove State Park, opulent homes dotted along the hills of Newport Coast, renowned golf courses at The Resort at Pelican Hill , a quaint maritime village on Balboa Island. A ferry ride across the marina takes visitors to Balboa Fun Zone with its vintage ferris wheel, Duffy boats, and whale watching tours.”

Incorporated in 1906, the city has attracted vacationers from its early days, and in the 20th century, many celebrities made their homes in Newport Beach. Actors James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, and Shirley Temple were known to frequent the area, but the most famous celebrity resident was John Wayne, known as “The Duke.” His home can be seen on harbor tours, and the Orange County International Airport was named for him.

“Surf culture is the backbone of Newport Beach... experienced locals catch waves at The Wedge, while children splash at Corona del Mar,” Tanaka said. Elegant resorts, family-oriented hotels, and laid-back cottages provide visitors a place to stay while they enjoy the beaches, hiking trails, and attractions of Newport Beach. In summer, the population swells, and when the weather cools in late autumn, the secluded beaches welcome visitors to explore tide pools or stroll along the shore.

The Resort at Pelican Hill

Guests can stay in a bungalow guest room or suite with a private terrace and limestone fireplace, most with ocean views. Crystal Cove Beach Cottages

For a unique stay steps from the beach, the rustic cottages at Crystal Cove State Park , built around the 1920s, are a popular choice. Preserved and restored to meet current requirements, the cottages offer vintage furnishings, basic facilities, and plenty of character. Each cottage is equipped with a refrigerator and microwave. Linens and towels are provided, but traditional hotel services like daily housekeeping are not available.

Cruise the harbor in an electric boat.

Rent a Duffy boat for the perfect way to experience Newport Beach’s harbor, ogle multi-million dollar mansions, and cruise among resident sea lions. You can relax while you enjoy the easy to manage electric boat, sometimes called “golf carts on the water.”  With a rental of two to four hours, you can either bring along your own food or request snacks and drinks for an additional cost.

Play golf on a stunning championship course.

At The Resort at Pelican Hill , two courses, the North and the South, offer thrilling challenges and memorable views. Famed course designer Tom Fazio took full advantage of the remarkable terrain, ocean breezes, and rolling hills. The Golf Academy is the place to improve your game with private lessons, golf clinics, and the latest 3D equipment to evaluate your swing.

Spend an afternoon whale watching.

You have a good chance of spotting whales throughout the year in Newport Beach. Gray whales can usually be seen from December through April during their annual migration. Blue Whales visit the California coast to feed on krill from May through October. Even if a whale doesn’t show up, you’ll see schools of dolphins and groups of barking sea lions.

The Best Times to Visit

The weather in Newport Beach is generally mild throughout the year, with the warmest months from July through September when temperatures reach into the low 70s, and occasionally a bit higher. Winter months are cooler with some rain, and temperatures rarely dip below 50. In May and June, coastal cities experience a marine layer, causing the cool, cloudy mornings that locals call “May Gray” and “June Gloom.”

The cooler seasons are perfect for hiking, biking along the coast, and strolling along the beach. Surfers are in the ocean year-round, with wetsuits when the water is colder. For beachgoers, the warm summer and early autumn sunshine are their favorite times in Newport Beach.

Ten great New England spas for hydrotherapy, massage, and more

After the winter, don’t you deserve to indulge yourself a little.

Four photos from different spas put together in a composite

W hile a day at the spa might seem self-indulgent, well, that’s the point. And spas can make sense even for under-indulgent travelers, offering a restorative, often-otherworldly experience without the need to book a plane ticket, and in many cases, a hotel room. After a long winter, don’t you deserve that? (You do.)

Tree Spa at Hidden Pond in Kennebunkport, Maine

As if Maine weren’t peaceful enough already, Tree Spa, part of the upscale Kennebunkport resort Hidden Pond, quite literally ups the ante with three tree house-inspired treatment rooms built on platforms elevated 8 feet above the ground.

Nestled in a white birch forest, with buildings connected by a wooden catwalk, the spa — which opens for the season on May 2 — is an extension of Hidden Pond’s earthy luxury. Interiors are a delight, with birch wood chandeliers, Moroccan rugs, leather seating, and, in the couples suite, an electric fireplace.

But what sets Tree Spa apart are its transformative treatments, which use a combination of organic products and oils and scrubs made with ingredients picked fresh from gardens around Hidden Pond, including rosemary, mint, and lavender. Standouts (available for both men and women) include the Kennebunkport Delight, a full body scrub and massage, and the Sole Soothing Herbal Leg and Foot treatment, a pressure-point treatment designed to target tired calves and feet. For $255, the new-for-spring Breathe Deeply and Slow Down brings together aromatherapy with a manuka honey scrub, full-body massage, and scalp massage. Afterward, relax by one of two on-site pools with a tall glass of water blended with mint or an herb-infused cocktail from restaurant Earth.

Spa at Topnotch Resort in Stowe, Vermont

The 35,000 square-foot-spa at Topnotch has something for just about everyone, with 30 treatment rooms and more than 100 treatments on offer for women, men, and even kids.

For the grownups, the Botanical Crush Body Treatment is a full-body mineral salt scrub — using lavender, ginger, neroli, or grapefruit-black pepper body oils — and the Total Hops Massage uses oils infused with locally-grown hops to help reduce inflammation, flush out toxins, and balance moisture levels. The options for children include the Scrub-a-Dub Facial, a “gentle and relaxing” treatment using products appropriate for young skin, and the reasonably-priced Fizzy Bomb Pedicure, a foot soak, moisturizing massage, and nail shaping and polish ($35).

The spa’s newly-renovated fitness center features treadmills and Peloton bikes with views so breathtaking you’ll forget about the machines’ 22-inch screens, plus yoga and Pilates classes, and indoor and outdoor tennis and pickleball courts. Water offerings include indoor and outdoor pools and hot tubs. Hotel stays April 15-June 20 can receive 25 percent off during the Spring Foliage Getaway event.

A long, rectangular pool in an indoor area with lots of windows and skylights. There are green plants giving it a tropical feel as well as lounge chairs.

The Bodhi Spa in Newport and Providence

The Bodhi Spa’s approach to whole body detoxification adopts hydrotherapy as its focus. That means hot mineral baths, cold ice plunges, and aromatherapy steams using mineral blends formulated for healthy skin and muscle and joint restoration.

For $85, the spa’s signature 2½-hour Water Journey includes hot mineral baths at two different temperatures, a cold plunge, time in the eucalyptus steam room, and infrared sauna and dry sauna sessions. The experience aims to hydrate skin, help relieve water retention and congestion, stimulate circulation, reduce inflammation, and lower stress levels. The one-hour Water Journey Express, available only at 8 p.m., is $55.

There are also massages for individuals and couples, facials, and body treatments, including the standout Crown to Sole, which combines a facial with hot and cold stone massage, a warm foot scrub, and cupping therapy, which uses suction to increase blood flow to targeted areas. New this season, the Bodhi Lift Facial uses massage and facial cupping to stimulate the deep muscle fibers of the face to improve muscle tone for a brighter, more “lifted” look. A third location is set to open this summer in Norwood, Massachusetts.

The Spa at Winvian in Morris, Connecticut

Set in a quiet corner of the 113-acre Relais & Chateaux property in the hills of Litchfield County, the Spa at Winvian rounds out its parent hotel’s emphasis on quiet luxury. There are six rooms — two are roomy enough to accommodate a couple and have wood-burning fireplaces — inside a light-filled, country-modern building made of reclaimed barn beams, steel, and metal cable and featuring a glass-encased Meditation Lounge and reflecting pool.

A wide variety of facial and hydrotherapy treatments and massage — which can be done outdoors, weather permitting, between Memorial Day and Labor Day — include a couples facial followed by champagne, and Ashiatsu massage, for which a therapist uses parallel bars hung from the ceiling to help balance barefoot on your back. Special packages also let guests explore Tibetan sound therapy and private yoga sessions. After Memorial Day, the heated garden-side pool welcomes spa-goers for a post-treatment swim and a snack.

Astraea at the Longfellow Hotel in Portland, Maine

The in-house spa at the new Longfellow Hotel, set to open in May in Portland’s historic West End, will juxtapose its urban surroundings with an extra emphasis on relaxation and disconnection, and a focus on body and mind. Astraea was the goddess of the stars and of justice in Greek mythology. Here, that means a spa menu centered around massage, sauna, and meditation, plus a commitment to donating a portion of proceeds from all sales to local nonprofit Full Plates Full Potential.

A “meditation experience room” will feature state of the art “sleep loungers” — adjustable lounge chairs designed to promote relaxation and sleep — while two private infrared sauna rooms will use radiant heat-producing light to encourage sweat at lower temperatures than a traditional sauna. Sea-inspired products will star in many of the massages and body wraps, including the Seaweed Leaf Wrap, which is intended to detoxify, firm, and soften skin by wrapping guests in Laminaria seaweed leaves from the Irish organic brand VOYA.

The Spa at Mandarin Oriental Boston

A luxurious bathroom with black tile floors and walls. There's a large soaking tub and a separate shower with rainfall waterhead. A woman is preparing the soaking tub.

There’s little that this 16,000-square-foot urban oasis at one of Boston’s most high-end hotels doesn’t do. There are all the usual suspects — massages, scrubs, facials, all with an Eastern flair, plus steam rooms and “experience showers” that combine ambient sound, light, and aromatherapy.

But what makes the Spa at the Mandarin Oriental stand out this year are its new multi-day wellness retreats. These ultra-luxe escapes — a three-day, three-night option starts at $4,398, including lodging and meals — are designed to be holistic and immersive. The Inner Strength program focuses on reflection, rest, and renewal through Himalayan sound-bathing meditation, private yoga, and Pilates in the just-renovated fitness center, as well as massage designed to help promote sleep. Outer Strength incorporates more challenging movement classes, massages aimed at muscular healing, and postural therapy. Both programs feature whole foods and plant-based meals and one-on-one coaching sessions, as well as optional reiki energy healing and guided forest bathing at Arnold Arboretum and on the Charles River Esplanade.

The Spa at Chatham Bars Inn

The spa at this well-established Cape Cod inn draws inspiration from the air and the ocean. To start: the Healing Seaweed Body Wrap, which begins with a dry brush exfoliation followed by a white algae body mask and a full body massage with warm algae oil. The Ocean Massage uses soothing, warm stones to make massage strokes from head to toe. New for spring, the signature Dermasound Facial uses water and ultrasonic frequency to exfoliate surface debris, including oil, dirt, and bacteria, and smooth fine lines and rougher textures without leaving the skin red or inflamed.

For the full experience, book one of 12 adults-only spa suites located just above the spa. Each is outfitted with an oversized hydrotherapy tub, sauna, steam shower, and fireplace. All spa services are discounted 25 percent on select dates in March. In May, the spa’s Zen Garden opens for the season, featuring five outdoor treatment cabanas where guests can enjoy a variety of massages, including the Aroma Journey, which uses oils custom-blended according to guest preference and, in season, herbs and flowers grown on site.

Location: 297 Shore Road, Chatham

Five cabanas with massage tables, candles, and other equipment are set up in an outdoor garden. The cabanas are set up on wooden decking and the area is surrounded by trees and other landscaping.

The Spa at the Woodstock Inn in Vermont

Two levels of light-colored wood and white brick lend a contemporary feel to the Woodstock Inn’s spa, which has earned LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification from the US Green Building Council. A recent $10 million restoration created a space with vaulted ceilings filled with natural light.

Treatments change with the seasons. For spring, the 60- to 90-minute-long Mud Slide — named after Vermont’s “mud season” and starting at $186 — is a scrub, wrap, and full-body massage using products that feature espresso, chocolate, and sweet cream. Guests are invited to fill out a “personal care guide” in advance of a visit to be paired with the right treatment and therapist. A perfect day might sandwich spa time with some physical activity on the inn’s hiking trails or 18-hole golf course (weather permitting); a partnership with New England Falconry across the way lets guests spend time with trained hawks. Afterward, wind down at the spa’s outdoor fireside jacuzzi and sauna, which offer full bar service.

Kripalu Center for Yoga & Health in Stockbridge

This Berkshires center was forced to close in January after a burst pipe caused over $100,000 in flooding damage. But now set to reopen March 29, Kripalu is gearing up to remain a destination for restoration and wellness in Western Massachusetts. The signature Retreat & Renewal program is a customizable experience that includes unlimited yoga and movement classes, access to the center’s vast network of walking trails and its kayaks, and the option to add on treatments.

Offerings include acupuncture, crystal energy work, sound healing, tarot readings, and Ayurvedic treatments such as Marma Balancing, in which a light-pressure massage is meant to balance one’s energy, and Abhyanga-Garshana, a massage and dry silk-glove exfoliation. (Options for those under 18 include acupuncture, reiki, tarot readings, and energy balancing.) All public spaces are tech-free to encourage wellness, and all breakfasts in the dining hall are silent, based on the idea that eating mindfully reduces stress, elevates immunity, and aids in digestion.

The Spa at Wentworth by the Sea in New Castle, New Hampshire

A photo of a person wearing a soft-looking, white spa robe with the Wentworth name embroidered on the left side of the chest.

The Spa at Wentworth by the Sea is a favorite for girls’ weekends and bachelorette parties for its serene setting — gardens, clay tennis courts, two marina-front pools, and sprawling spa — and its location just 10 minutes from downtown Portsmouth. An extensive massage, facial, and body treatment menu is bolstered by more uncommon offerings such as Gua Sha, a detoxifying facial massage that uses jade stones to smooth, firm, and lift, and HydraFacials, a medical-grade, but gentle, skin care treatment that combines lymphatic drainage with LED therapy to cleanse and hydrate skin.

Another service that makes the spa stand out is its brand-new Salt & Sound Lounge, which offers halotherapy — also known as “salt therapy.” For $75 for a 30-minute session, fine salt particles are pumped into the air in an enclosed, climate-controlled space. The breathing treatment is meant to reduce inflammation, break up congestion, and absorb allergens — just in time for spring pollen season.

April Fools' Day pranks: Apps to translate baby stoner sayings, a ghostbuster at Tinder

Every april 1, brands and companies want to get some laughs – and attention – with goofy new 'product' launches. here are some ideas from companies such as sweetgreen, welch's and omaha steaks..

If you don't like Mondays, this one may especially be grating. It's April Fool's Day , when you should trust no one and question everything.

The roots of April Fools' Day may date back before to before the 15th century. But the modern-day April Fools' Day has become a day to prank a friend, family member, co-worker − or your customers.

Even though some companies have had April Fools' pranks backfire , marketers continue to issue spoof products in attempts to get some laughs and attention.

Already ahead of April Fools' Day, 7-Eleven has hinted at a possible prank product: In addition to new Lemon Lime, Green Apple and Sweet Orange flavored 7-Select sparkling waters, out now with partner Miracle Seltzer, there's a fourth flavor coming April 1: Big Bite Hot Dog.

The hot dog-flavored water "combines the mouthwatering experience of 7-Eleven’s iconic Big Bite Hot Dog into one refreshing beverage – ketchup and mustard included," the convenience chain says in a press release . "Say goodbye to the days of alternating bites of a hot dog with sips of a beverage, now those on the go can swap the bun for bubbles."

Krispy Kreme: A special doughnut deal for April Fools' Day

Will Big Bite Hot Dog sparkling water be sold? Its availability will be announced April 1. However, some reporters were sent a can of the drink. USA TODAY can confirm that it definitely smells like hot dog water and has a smoky aftertaste.

If you are interested in trying it, both 7-Eleven and Miracle Seltzer have hinted at having some to give away on their Instagram pages. (If you get a can, share with a friend as it's 16 ounces.)

Here's a roundup of many of the brand-related April Fools’ gag announcements. You've been warned.

Sour cream & onion flavored soda

Despite the proliferation of crazy-flavored products including Peeps-flavored Pepsi , Frank's RedHot sauce-flavored Vlasic pickles and Doritos Nacho Cheese-flavored liquor , healthy soda brand OLIPOP and Pringles are not really teaming up to bring to market a Sour Cream & Onion soda.

The product would have been "a match made in heaven … to bring the delicious, tangy flavor of Pringles’ Sour Cream & Onion flavor to life in liquid form with prebiotic benefits," the companies said.

Stoner lingo translation app

Another dream team prank product: Rosetta Stoned, a mobile app from Rosetta Stone and medical marijuana company Fluent , that "bridges the conversational gap between novice users and seasoned stoners in any social setting."

Da da decoder

Infant equipment site BabyQuip has its own language-bridging lark: the “Baby Translator” app, to decode your baby's secret language.

"Say 'goodbye' to restless nights as you decode your baby's coos and cries instantly, providing you with the understanding you need as a parent, all in one convenient app," it promises.

An AI-powered plush doll

Custom stuffed animal maker Budsies already makes selfie plush dolls with a built-in voice recorder. Its April Fools' spoof: Artificial intelligence-enabled dolls that "come programmed to learn everything about you and to become your new best friend."

A 50-pound Bearabuddy

Sorry to the 3,500 or so who have already signed up to buy Bearaby's Jumbo Benji plush toy, which is four times the size of its regular weighted plush toys and twice as heavy as its heaviest weighted blanket . This isn't actually going to be sold. But it is real and will be making its home in the lobby at The Child Mind Institute in Harlem to welcome children and their families. More weighted plushies are due the day after April Fools' Day, the company says.

A sleeping bag to go bananas over

The Dole Banana Peel Sleeping Bag, conveniently promoted as being available on April Fools' Day only, is made from actual banana fiber and "allows parents to escape into their own cocoon of sensory deprivation."

A full-body cleaning suit

Outrageous clothing company Tipsy Elves has a special product for April Fools' Day: The Mopsie. You don't need paper towels anymore, you can use your body to clean up those messes, with this "innovative, wearable microfiber towel jumpsuit" for "effortlessly soaking up spills and messes with ease." There's also a Baby Mopsie for "hard to reach places."

Korean BBQ deodorant

Kevin's Natural Foods , which has paleo- and keto-certified ready-to-cook and easy-prep entrées, is touting a new line of personal care products inspired by its food dishes including Korean BBQ Deodorant, Cilantro Lime Toothpaste, Lemongrass Basil Shampoo and Tikka Masala Sunscreen.

"These new face, body and hair care essentials will help fans prioritize self-care inside and out," the company says.

Omaha Steaks' meaty sprays

Omaha Steaks has its own personal care prank product: Meaty Spritz sprays with flavors such as Omaha Fog, Hog Haze, and Cock-a-Doodle-Dew.

"The world’s first protein-infused, flavor-packed, portable pump spray … (to) enjoy all the mouthwatering flavors of your Omaha Steaks gourmet favorites no matter how far away from the kitchen you are!" the company says.

Sriracha toothpaste

Asian sauce maker Lee Kum Kee , which makes Sriracha Chili Sauce and Sriracha Mayo Dressing, is introducing – not – its Siracha Mayo Toothpaste. It's "fiery and creamy goodness … is sure to spice up your morning dental routine."

Post-salad dental kit

Need some less powerful toothpaste? Sweetgreen offered these fanciful personal hygiene products as part of its Sweetgreen After Salad Kit, which is "designed with your pearly whites in mind … offering everything you need to freshen up post-meal."

Choose from Miso Ginger Toothpaste, Spicy Cashew Mints, Lime Cilantro Dental Floss, and Sweetgreen Toothbrush and Floss Picks.

Fruit juice lip gloss

More personal care prank products: Welch’s Juicyfuls Juicy Fruit Lip Gloss – now available in five flavors: grape, orange, peach, strawberry and raspberry – made with real juice from Juicefuls fruit snacks so "you get that irresistible sweet flavor you love, all in a lip gloss that's as fun as it is nourishing."

Protein-powered seasonings

Quest Nutrition , maker of protein powder, snacks and other products, has a prank product line of seasonings including All Purpose, Lemon Pepper, and Garlic Herb, each of which deliver "21g of protein, 2g of net carbs and less than 1g of sugar."

If you want to try Quest's real products, you can use code NOJOKE for free shipping on online orders over $49 April 1-3.

Superpowered Superfeet?

These would certainly come in hand on a run, but – sorry – it's a jogging joke. Superfeet SuperBoost Power E-Soles gives you 8 hours of continuous battery-powered boost, for almost Iron Man-like propulsion. "All the comfort and support of Superfeet , now with electrifying performance," the company says in a video about the prank product. "It's like having a powerful electric motor in your shoes."

Scotch tape-branded Scotch?

This shenanigan seems like a blend that could stick: Scotch Whisky by Scotch Brand. The whisky "features a nose of cherry wood and a delightfully smooth finish that hits like a well-wrapped gift."

Who you gonna call when ghosted? This new title at Tinder

Dating app Tinder announced a new April Fools' Day hiring quest for a Vice President of Ghost Hunting to help combat "one of dating culture’s most prevalent vices – ghosting," a practice inflicted on 78% of singles already in 2024 (an untrue fact from Tinder).

Patrón's bringing back a beloved liqueur. No kidding.

Patrón patrons get some good news today. The premium tequila maker chose April Fools' Day to announce the return of its Patrón XO Cafe tequila-based coffee liqueur, which was discontinued in 2021. Since production ceased, devotees took to social media and signed a petition asking parent company Bacardi to bring it back.

Made with Patrón Silver tequila and Arabica bean coffee – the dry liqueur can be sipped straight, in cocktails and as dessert topping – Patrón XO Cafe will begin arriving in stores again later this month.

Say it with dead flowers

Don't forget to put roses on your April Fools' Day list. UrbanStems has this "special" delivery, The Dead Inside Collection, "an assortment of dead flower bouquets, dead plants, half empty vases, and more for the pessimist in your life." But, for real, check UrbanStems' social media accounts including Instagram for how to get 20% off an order of real flowers.

Cheesecake Factory's real deals

The Cheesecake Factory  also has a deal that's no joke: Sign up for the chain's Cheesecake Rewards loyalty program on April 1 to get an Any Slice, Half Price reward, redeemable for 50% off any slice of cheesecake or layer cake, with any food or beverage purchase (no gift cards).

Those who were members before April 1 will find something special in their account on Monday, too: either a free slice of cheesecake each month for a year, a free whole cheesecake, a free slice of cheesecake, $5 off $25 purchases, or $10 off $40 purchases. (All rewards redeemable by April 16; can be redeemed for dine-in, to-go and DoorDash.)

New merch from Dunkin', bonus points in app

Dunkin' announced it is going back to its roots and rebranding to just "Donuts'" on Monday, April 1. To celebrate the rebrand, the company is selling "Donuts'" merch, including sweatshirts that read "DONUTS," on ShopDunkin.com .

Additionally, Dunkin' Rewards members will receive 3x bonus points on any donut order through the mobile app on April 1.

Urban Outfitters launches 'Name Three Shirts' movement

Urban Outfitters said it is launching a global movement to "stand in solidarity against band-tee-shaming" by launching a new collection called "Name Three Shirts."

The t-shirt line "playfully mocks the gatekeeping attitudes of older generations who insist that band-shirt wearers should be required to name songs by those artists," the company said in a news release.

The line, which features revamped logos from bands such as The Grateful Dead, Joy Division and Led Zeppelin, is a "playful jab at the attitudes of older generations, and fights back against the misogynistic undertones of the infamous ‘name three songs’ line of questioning," Urban Outfitters said in the news release.

The collection of shirts is available online and in select Urban Outfitters stores starting April 1. You can shop the collection online here .

Auntie Anne's, Frontier Airlines collaborate on Pretzel Plane

Auntie Anne's pretzels and Frontier Airlines announced they have collaborated on the newest addition to Frontier's fleet: the Pretzel Plane.

According to a news release, the plane includes new in-flight entertainment featuring Auntie Anne's pretzels rolled seat-side, the "luxurious" smell of hot, fresh pretzels throughout the cabin and airplane-shaped pretzels if you're feeling hungry.

Moe's Southwest Grill, Sonic team up to introduce a Queso Slush

Two popular fast food chains announced a collaboration that is sure to be polarizing.

Moe's and Sonic announced a new beverage, the Queso Slush, a queso-flavored slushie. "The frozen goodness of a Sonic Slush meets the delicious flavor of Moe's queso."

Most people in Massachusetts will be able to see a partial solar eclipse in just under a week, but there are places in New England where a total eclipse can be seen.

Northern areas of New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine will be the best places in New England to see the moon fully cover the sun on April 8, but tens of thousands of people have already made plans in those places to do just that.

"As a region, we're completely sold out across hotels and short-term rentals," said Jeff Lawson, director of Hello Burlington and vice president of tourism and marketing for the Lake Champlain Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Lawson said with rooms sold out, people making day trips from Boston and New York will make up the majority of eclipse watchers — which means their will be heavy traffic.

Burlington, Vermont, and other communities in northern New England are closing streets and setting up designated parking areas on the day of the eclipse.

"Definitely do not plan on pulling over on the side of the highway during the eclipse. You'll probably have some attention from the local police," Lawson said.

Officials in New Hampshire's North Country, from Pittsburg to Colebrook, are urging day trippers to stick to designated parking lots and roads. With a nor'easter bringing wintry weather Wednesday and Thursday and some already muddy fields, they are also warning drivers to stay on main roads.

Colebrook Town Manager Tim Stevens said the North Country shares only four tow trucks for the entire region.

"We definitely don't want people's fields ruined and we don't want people's cars stuck there for quite some time," Stevens said.

People who want to see the total solar eclipse from a mountain should stick to places that have a planned public viewing, such as Stowe Mountain Resort in Vermont.

"Mountaintops may seem like great places to watch the eclipse (but) the backcountry is not a good place to be right now," Lawson said. "It can be very cold, the weather can change fast and it's covered in snow and ice at the moment."

New Hampshire officials also warned that people who are planning on making a day trip to see the total solar eclipse should take a vehicle with four-wheel drive.

How Caitlin Clark, Iowa beat LSU in Elite 8 to advance to Final 4

Caitlin Clark, Iowa avenge last year's loss to LSU, advance to Final 4

Iowa prevailed Monday in a tightly contested battle between two of the most-hyped stars and teams in women's college basketball, as the Hawkeyes took down the defending champion LSU Tigers 94-87 to return to the Final Four.

Led by star guard Caitlin Clark with a game-high 41 points, the No. 1 Hawkeyes pulled ahead in the second half — as Clark put up 12 points in the third quarter to help Iowa carry an 11-point lead into the fourth. Clark finished with 12 assists and seven rebounds and shot 13-of-29 from the field, including 9-of-20 from 3.

The No. 3 Tigers opened the game with strong rebounding (with 12 boards in the first compared to Iowa's five), while the Hawkeyes relied on their 3-point shooting, which proved too much for LSU's defense.

Tigers star Angel Reese finished with 17 points and a game-high 20 rebounds. Reese briefly exited in the first half after falling underneath the basket. She hopped directly to the bench without putting any weight on her right leg but returned shortly after exiting. She later fouled out with 1:45 remaining and LSU trailing by 10 points.

The contest marked a rematch of last year's title game, which LSU won 102-85 over Iowa to claim its first national championship. Iowa is seeking its first title and will face the winner of No. 1 USC and No. 3 UConn in the Final Four on Friday.

Iowa vs. LSU showdown exceeded the hype.

ALBANY, N.Y. — It’s felt like Iowa and LSU have been on a collision course for a full year now, ever since the teams clashed in the national championship and one very famous basketball player taunted another very famous basketball player at the end.

So, on Selection Sunday, when the selection committee unveiled the women’s NCAA Tournament bracket, and we saw that these two teams could meet again — this time in the Elite Eight — we all immediately circled it. Many of us filled out our brackets in hopes that our picks could help it come to fruition, despite how difficult both teams’ paths would be to get here.

ALBANY, N.Y. — Caitlin Clark’s final assist of the night won’t count. It came moments after the final buzzer, when she launched the game ball from midcourt to her brother Colin, seated eight rows behind the Iowa team bench. After catching a perfect pass — what else would you expect from Clark? — he tucked the ball under his arm, and later, inside a black jacket to conceal it.

This is astonishing. According to Synergy, Caitlin Clark had a hand in 77.7 percent of Iowa's points tonight.

With 1:45 remaining and LSU trailing by 10, Angel Reese has fouled out.

The Moda Center is showing the Albany Elite 8 matchup on the Jumbotron, and the crowd went wild when Clark drained the 3-pointer to put Iowa up 80-69. Hawkeyes fans are everywhere, even if they're not playing in the building.

After scoring 13 points in the first half, Reese has only four points in the second half and is a mere 1/10 from the field.

Flash from the past

In last year's Elite 8 matchup, Caitlin Clark had a triple-double with 41 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds. With 4:49 left tonight, Clark has 37 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds.

If Iowa wins tonight that was a Clark 3-pointer that will get played countless times on reply. Clark was as animated as she's been after a made basket, pounding her chest multiple times with her team now up 11.

Shannon Ryan

Clark passed Temeka Johnson for most assists in the NCAA Tournament (137), per ESPN broadcast.

I do love the stars. But honestly, my two favorite players to watch in this game are Kate Martin and Flau'jae Johnson. They are the hearts of their teams.

Statistically, the game is meeting pregame numbers. Iowa averages 11 3-pointers a game, while LSU averages barely four. That's the number at the end of the third quarter. Likewise, LSU holds a 12.5 rebounding average this season and is up 17 in that area.

The box score says that LSU has eight fastbreak points and Iowa has six, but the Hawkeyes' ability to push the tempo and get easy runouts after LSU misses and makes was key in the third quarter (and has been all night, frankly). LSU wasn't helped by the fact it shot only 19.2 percent from the field in the third quarter. Iowa leads 69-58 with 10 minutes to play.

Flau'jae Johnson is doing literally everything she can for LSU tonight on both ends of the floor. She's keeping the Tigers in this. Grabbing rebounds and getting putbacks, blocking shots ... she's been terrific even as LSU trails.

After that last turnover, Kim Mulkey turned toward her bench and banged her hands into her head three times. That was LSU's second turnover this quarter but any mistakes combined with its shooting woes have plagued the Tigers.

Iowa's Addison O'Grady might lowkey be the MVP of the game so far. I really thought the Hawkeyes would have a hard time without Hannah Stuelke for extended periods, and O'Grady has battled in the paint.
