Rotting Christ to Embark on 2023 North American Tour

The post Rotting Christ to Embark on 2023 North American Tour appeared first on Consequence .

Greek black metal masters Rotting Christ have announced a 2023 North American tour.

Dubbed the “Under Our Black Cult Tour,” the month-long trek kicks off on February 16th in Houston and runs through March 14th in Orlando. The band’s Season of Mist labelmates Carach Angren and Gaerea, along with UADA, will provide support. Tickets are available via Ticketmaster or via the individual venue links .

Prior to the tour, Rotting Christ will be aboard the 70,000 Tons of Metal cruise, which departs from Miami on January 30th and returns to port on February 3rd. The band will be playing two sets, including a full performance of 1993’s Thy Mighty Contract to mark the seminal album’s 30th anniversary.

The aforementioned LP helped define the melodic black metal sound that became synonymous with the Greek black metal scene. Rotting Christ have since taken a more gothic/symphonic direction and continue to release albums at a steady clip, with 2019’s The Heretics being the most recent entry in their large discography.

Rotting Christ + Borknagar Announce Rescheduled 2022 North American Tour Dates

Rotting Christ 's "Devastation on the Nation" North American tour that was originally set to kick off in March 2020 has officially been rescheduled for Spring 2022. While the dates have changed, the bill remains the same (minus Imperial Triumphant) and features support from Borknagar , Wolfheart  and  Abigail Williams .

The trek, which finds Rotting Christ promoting their most recent release,  The Heretics , is set to launch on April 21 of next year in California and will wrap up over one month later, concluding back in California on May 22. See the new list of dates below.

Tickets that were purchased for the original 2020 tour dates will still be honored and anyone seeking a refund for those stops can seek one at the point of purchase.

Due to the community spread of the coronavirus in North America, the "Devastation on the Nation" trek was postponed as local governments clamped down on public gatherings, banning any events of 100 people or more. Shortly after, the CDC (Center for Disease Control) urged gathering be limited to no more than 50 people, which was followed by the White House tightening social distancing measures, putting a cap on public gatherings at just 10 people.

The show was amazing, the night with Rotting Christ and Moonspell was great in Toulouse.

Rotting Christ played some old songs and songs from the new album The Heretics.

The sound in Metronum was really good like always.

I've liked Rotting Christ for a while. Quite liked what I listened to without delving too deeply into them. Oh and I never saw them live before.

Big Mistake. On every count.

About 25 seconds into their performance, all that changed. The energy from the crowd for them was matched by the energy on stage. Epic riffs. Enthusiastic interactions with the crowd, capped off by a truly amazing performance. They came, they rocked, they left their music ringing in our ears. I'd love to know the setlist they played but I was too in awe at the energy and speed they played at and being spun and bashed around in the epic moshpit to try guess what I was listening to!

In 2020, brothers Sakis and Themmis Tolis were bestowed the immortal honor of having a newly discovered fossil species named after them! Two researchers from the Natural History Museum in Luxembourg,  Dr. Ben Thuy and and Dr. Lea Numberger, recently found a new brittle-star species and decided to name it “Brezinacantha Tolis” in honor of the Tolis brothers. More info on the discovery and its etymology can be found  HERE .

ROTTING CHRIST  previously revealed a coveted collaboration with the creators of the PS4 game “Mortal Shell,” which featured the band’s epic track “Χ Ξ Σ (666)” in the official trailer! The game was released worldwide in August of 2020. The trailer can be seen at  THIS LOCATION .

It’s not  ROTTING CHRIST ‘s first encounter with the gaming industry. The band was discovered on a poster in the game ‘The Last of Us Part 2’ along with label mates  HORRENDOUS !

Here is what the press has to say to about ‘The Hererics’:

“The band’s present incarnation is as a melodic tour-de-force, proficient in writing devastating earworms with gradated arrangements without a trace of insidiousness. Their sound is richly sumptuous, smoothly opulent and, most importantly, unmistakably Rotting Christ.” – Metal Injection “On lucky-number-13, ‘The Heretics,’ Rotting Christ have delivered an true ace—the culmination of the Greeks’ successes, in fact. The record is dark, heavy, mystical, memorable and fucking awesome all the way through.” – Decibel Magazine “’The Heretics’ is the proverbial middle finger to all their doubters and is in contention for best metal album of the year for this writer.” – Metal Underground “’The Heretics’ is probably the most hook-laden Rotting Christ album since ‘Aealo.’ Tracks such as ‘The Time Has Come’ and ‘Vetry Zlye’ put this album over the top of their Mount Zeus altitude of releases.” – Metal Underground “For these 10 songs, Rotting Christ not only troll the world of religion at large, but also impugn its implications—war and woe in the name of any god, “neo-messiahs” who invoke religion to commandeer power, the persecution that follows.” – Bandcamp Daily “To say that they’ve found a sound would be putting it politely; Rotting Christ not only found a sound, but they also basically defined it and then later let it define them.” – No Clean Singing “The band have mastered the art of “guitar riff as weapon” by this point, and, as mentioned before, have absolutely zero issue heading back to that well across The Heretics‘ ten songs.” – No Clean Singing “Holy Satan’s Hellfire can we discuss this new album ‘The Heretics’ (out now, Season of Mist)? You wanna talk about a grand slam fucking home run, well here it is!! Not since ‘The Satanist’ from BEHEMOTH has something grabbed me simultaneously by the throat and by the balls the way this album has.” – Amps & Green Screens

ROTTING CHRIST  have reached another peak in their long career that now spans over more than three decades. The Greeks have literally stood the test of time. With a steady core line-up and their well-honed live delivery,  ROTTING CHRIST  are filling concert halls and reap enthusiastic crowd reactions wherever they go. This demonstration of love from their followers is not just driven by nostalgia as the band has managed to evolve and grow, while staying relevant beyond the classics with their highly acclaimed latest albums such as ‘Aealo’ (2010), ‘Κατά τον δαίμονα εαυτού’ (2013), and ‘Rituals’ (2016).

Now, with the new offering ‘The Heretics’,  ROTTING CHRIST  are opening a brand new chapter. With confidence and skills derived from experience, each song represents its own sonic universe. Guitarist and vocalist Sakis Tolis in collaboration with his brother Themis on drums achieve a perfect balance of amalgamating their classic and unique style of riffing and rhythm with exciting new elements sprinkled in to keep their material exciting and fresh. The experienced is enhanced by Jens Bogren’s equally clear and transparent yet also massive as well as sombre mix and mastering at his widely renowned Fascination Street Studios (AMORPHIS, BORKNAGAR, MOONSPELL, DEVIN TOWNSEND, and many more).

ROTTING CHRIST  were founded by Sakis Tolis and his brother Themis in the year 1987. Starting out on a basis of death and grind, the Greeks had already embarked on a darker musical journey by the time their debut full-length ‘Thy Mighty Contract’ (1993) was revealed. On the following seven albums covering a ten-year period from ‘Non Serviam’ (1994) to ‘Sanctus Diavolos’ (2004),  ROTTING CHRIST  steadily defined their own distinct style by experimenting with elements from death, heavy, and gothic metal without betraying their black roots. At the same time, the band went from underground heroes to headliner status. With the highly acclaimed ninth album, ‘Theogonia’ (2007), the Greek stalwarts added an unmistakable native element to their sound, which has remained with them as a signature trademark ever since. Exploring the mythical legacy of cultures around the globe led to  ROTTING CHRIST ‘s massively successful latest release, ‘Rituals’ (2016). With more than 30 years, 13 studio albums, a dozen EPs, singles and split releases, as well as more than 1.250 shows under their belt, 2018 marked the year of ‘Their Greatest Spells’ (2018), where they musically revisited their exciting legacy to connect their past with the present.

‘The Heretics’ marks another step in the evolution of the Greek masters. Buckle up for a fascinating musical ride through the woes of religious wars, Zoroastrianism and the eternal war between good and evil.  Metal at its best!

Melodic Black Metal - Greece

Rotting Christ Band

In the dimly lit catacombs of extreme metal, one name stands as a monolith: ROTTING CHRIST . Sakis Tholis and his brother Themis started this band together back in 1987. In the three decades since, these Greek titans have left their blackened imprint all over the metal world. They’ve released 13 studio albums and played more than 1,300 concerts around the globe. Underneath all this hard work, Rotting Christ have but one vision – an urge to not only push the boundaries of extreme metal, but to keep reinventing themselves along the way.

Rotting Christ’s evolution has unfolded across several distinct chapters. After starting out closer to the barely controlled chaos of grindcore, they went on to establish the iconic sound of Hellenic black metal. Their albums often embrace refined gothic soundscapes, only to plunge back into the depths of blasphemous fervour. Each chapter marked another, further exploration, and an unwavering commitment to push boundaries.

But the real turning point came in 2007, when Rotting Christ signed a pact with Season of Mist. They unleashed a series of albums for the French label that defied any and all expectations. From the piercing Theogonia and the symphonic grandeur of Aelo to the ritualistic intensity of Κατά Τον Δαίμονα Εαυτού , the cinematic experiences created by Rotting Christ became a spectacle of bombastic atmospheres, mesmerizing choirs, and neo-classical arrangements. The unexpected is their modus operandi, with the use of various languages (Latin, Arabic, Greek, English) as well as the extensive use of famous poetry woven into their music, like Edgar Allan Poe’s ‘The Raven’ on The Heretics .

In 2019, Rotting Christ’s epic journey continued with The Apocryphal Spell compilation, which offered fans an intimate glimpse into unreleased and rare material. This allowed them to gather strength, preparing for the release of their next, highly anticipated, 14th full-length studio album:

Pro Xristou .

Pro Xristou (‘Before Christ’ in Greek), serves as a fervent tribute to the last Pagan kings who resisted the onslaught of Christianity, guarding their ancient values and knowledge. In this thematic odyssey, intricately woven through tracks such as ‘The Apostate’ and ‘Ygdrassil’, Rotting Christ delves into the legacies of historical figures such as Flavius Claudius Julianus and Nordic mythological kings, embodying the might of Pagan wisdom in the face of Christian adversity. The album encapsulates the essence of Rotting Christ’s signature style – melodic, yet harsh at times – reinventing themselves yet again, while remaining rooted in their 35-year legacy.

Pro Xristou

It’s time to unleash the beast, as ROTTING CHRIST unleashes Saoirse, the latest single from their forthcoming 14th studio album – the monumental Pro Xristou. A 35-year-strong journey through the catacombs of extreme metal spearheaded by the inimitable brothers Sakis and Themis Tolis gives you the backdrop of what should rightly be anticipated.
