20 Must-Visit Tourist Spots in Catanduanes (Rolling Hills, Beaches & More)

 alt=

I had a realization a few years ago when I visited Catanduanes: it is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and underrated provinces in the Philippines.

Often referred to as the “Happy Island,” Catanduanes boasts breathtaking nature, pristine beaches, stunning landscapes, and warm-hearted locals. In earlier times, the province was called the “Land of the Howling Winds.” Situated off the coast of the Bicol region and facing the Pacific Ocean, it’s a common path for typhoons, hence the historical name.

However, the residents, known as Catandunganons, aspire for their home to be recognized for more than just its weather challenges. With its verdant rolling hills, untouched beaches, and rich natural beauty, Catanduanes is a destination worth exploring, and I was fortunate to experience its charm.

Here are some reasons why you should consider a visit to this island. Below is a list of the top tourist spots we explored during our trip to the Happy Island.

1. Batag Beach

During our first day in Catanduanes, we explored the capital town of Virac. I felt that touring Virac is already enough for our Catanduanes trip. We get the comforts of living in a small city and yet it’s also very close to nature and beaches!

After exploring the downtown area, we traveled for a few minutes to the coastal area until reaching Batag beach. It’s a stretch of cream-colored beach perfect for relaxation that we all, city dwellers, badly needed.

That’s Mt. Mayon.

At the end of the pristine beach, there is a rock formation suitable for more adventurous travelers. This spot is just perfect for those Instagrammable photos too! You can never go wrong with a backdrop of nature, right?

After exploring the beach, we rested in one of the cottages. Batag Beach is open to the public, so there’s no entrance fee. However, if you’re with family and friends, you can rent one of the cottages for a minimal fee of 250 pesos.

2. Talisoy Beach

After enjoying the pristine beauty of Batag Beach, we traveled for less than five minutes to Talisoy Beach.

This beach piqued my curiosity. It is located in a small cove, surrounded by lush greenery and rock formations. Although it’s open to the public, it retains a sense of seclusion and privacy, which people living in big cities will appreciate.

There’s a part of the beach that serves as a turtle sanctuary. How wonderful is that, right? It’s heartening to see people exert such tremendous effort to protect marine species and our environment.

Talisoy Beach

As we walked along the beach, we noticed something on the rock formation. The edge of it resembles a replica of Jesus’ face. In the Philippines where the majority are Catholics, this holds significant meaning. This resemblance is why Talisoy Beach is sometimes referred to as Jesus Face Beach.

3. Twin Rock Beach / Igang Beach

After the beach-hopping, we had our lunch at Twin Rock Beach Resort, located in the capital of Virac. The locals also call this Igang Beach.

They served us some of the most delicious Bicolano dishes, and also my personal favorites like Laing and Bicol Express . We enjoyed our lunch while looking at the relaxing views of the beach and the famous twin rocks from afar.

Twin Rock Beach

It’s impossible not to notice the stunning rock formations just a few meters off the shore. The two islets are the main attractions from where the owners got the inspiration for the resort’s name.

Overall, it was a calm and relaxing experience overlooking the pristine beach with creamy white sand. Twin Rock resort is also one of the most developed resorts on the island, so you know what to do once you visit Catandaunes.

4. Summit View Park

You can witness an awesome sea of clouds in Catanduanes without strenuous hiking. Yes, you just have to travel for about an hour from Virac going to the municipality of Viga . Upon entering the town, you’ll witness the famous Summit View Park.

Summit View Park

Just climb the stairs for a few steps and you will experience the stunning sea of clouds. We went there early in the morning just to witness the breathtaking view. The best part of our experience is when the local officials and the Catanduanes tourism office prepared breakfast at the summit. It was definitely one of my most memorable experiences in Catanduanes.

So if you happen to be on the island, travel to Viga and witness the beauty of the town.

5. Lolong Point Lighthouse

After breakfast, we went straight to the municipality of Panganiban for more adventures. A boat was waiting for us to take us to explore Panay island. It’s an island off the coast f the province’s eastern part.

We traveled for about 30 minutes by boat until we reached the tip part of the island. A lighthouse was visible as we sailed closer to the shore. This is Lolong Point Lighthouse.

Siempre, papahuli paba naman ako? siempre kailangan ng selfie. LOL!

The beach itself is also a beauty of its own. They call it Kumagat Beach. The Panganiban tourism office prepared a brunch for us. It’s a type of kakanin with sauce. It was delicious. We stayed for a few minutes relaxing by the beach until it was time for us to hike a little to visit Lolong Point Lighthouse.

It was just a few minutes of hiking but the sun was unforgiving so be prepared just in case. Don’t forget your sunscreen , okay?

But once we arrived at the lighthouse, it was all worth it. We witnessed a 360-degree view of the entire island and the Pacific ocean. It was a perfect chance for picture taking or simply savoring the calm and relaxing vibe of the ocean. If you want to visit Lolong Point Lighthouse, it’s much better to coordinate with the Municipal Tourism Office.

6. Museo de Catanduanes

When you’re in the capital town of Catanduanes, allot some time to check out Museo de Catanduanes. We had a chance to visit the museum during our 5-day trip in the province. This is located in the same building where the Tourism office is located.

Museo de Catanduanes

The museum features some old artifacts, memorabilia, and also products made from Catanduanes, especially Abaca. It’s nice to know more about Catanduanes’ history and heritage before even exploring it. It will give the right knowledge and perspective about the Catandunganons.

7. Palestina Rolling Hills

We had our lunch on a floating cottage, feasting on some delicious dishes like humba and lots of seafood.

After that, the local tourism office of Bagamanoc arrived and brought us to another awesome tourist destination in the province. We traveled for a few minutes by boat then hiked for another 15 minutes going on top of the hills.

catanduanes tourism office

Once we arrived at the summit, we were welcomed by an awesome view of rolling hills, nature, and the blue ocean. “This is Palestina Rolling Hills”, the Catanduanes Tourism staff said.

Looking below these rolling hills are stunning and pristine beaches. One of these is Tabing beach which also has a mini cave that can serve as protection from the scorching heat of the sun.

8. Loran Beach

After enjoying Catanduances’ rolling hills, what a great way to end the day relaxing on an untouched beach. Before heading to the mainland, we made a side trip to Loran beach located on the other side of Panay Island.

Loran Beach

Aside from the beach, a few steps away and you can visit the old Loran station, a former US coastguard complex in the 50s and 60s located on top of a hill in Bagamanoc . This was once a site for crews of the US Coast Guard providing American submarines and ships with a lower frequency for long-range navigation. Now, it’s just an abandoned structure, but a nice way to get a glimpse of the place’s history.

9. Boto ni Kurakog

Off the coast of Bagamanoc, you’ll witness an interesting rock formation. And when you get the chance to get closer to it when you ride a boat, you’d realize that it looks like a male genital. Haha, The locals call this Boto ni Kurakog. Boto is a Bicolano word for penis and Kurakog? You might be asking who is he.

Boto ni Kurakog 2

Is this looks familiar to you? LOL

Well, legend has it that Kurakog was a giant who fell in love with a mortal. Since the woman’s parents were against it, she committed suicide which made him really depressed. He eventually died and part of his intimate body appeared in the middle of the sea which is now known as Boto ni Kurakog. There are many versions of this story, so don’t be surprised if you hear a slightly different one.

10. Paday Falls

Paday Falls is just one of the many awesome waterfalls in the province. Located in Brgy. Basak in Bagamanoc, it is a popular hangout for many tourists and even locals because of its close easy access to the main road. You don’t need any strenuous hike, unlike other waterfalls in the country.

Paday Falls

A few minutes of land travel to Bagamanoc proper, then a 5-minute walk, and you’ll arrive at Paday Falls. There are cottages that you rent for a minimal fee. Just enjoying the view of the waterfalls is already a relaxing experience, what more if you decide to take a dip in its cold water? This is highly recommended when you visit the town of Bagamanoc.

11. Sakahon Beach

Early in the morning, we traveled all the way to the town of Bato to visit a beach. Locals call it Sakahon beach. Aside from the nature and pristine beach, the best part is the warm welcome from the local officials. They even prepared a breakfast filled with local delicacies!

It was delicious and so filling, enough to give us energy throughout the day.

Sakahon Beach

This is delicious.

Catanduanes Delicacy

We then explored Sakahon Beach. No wonder more and more beachgoers enjoy this piece of nature. It’s peaceful and uncrowded. It has clear water and fine sand too.

I would love to spend more time there, but we still have to go to Baras, our next destination.

12. Binurong Point

Binurong Point is the most popular Catanduanes tourist spot on social media with all its stunning rolling hills and landscapes. Some are even saying that this is the Batanes of Bicol, but you know Binurong Point is a beauty of its own.

Binurong point

Once we arrived at the registration area, we hiked for about 30 minutes going to Binurong Point. A guide is required to ensure the safety of the group. It’s also an income opportunity for many locals in the area. We were quite surprised that the guide assigned to us was a woman, a mother. It’s my bad that I forgot her name but we had a nice photo together. She was a nice and helpful guide, trying to earn a living for her family and help her husband who is a fisherman.

Well, once we arrived at Binurong Point, I was speechless for a while. I was just silently staring at this glorious beauty of nature. When you’re in Binurong Point, all you’d do is just enjoy the beauty in front of you. Sometimes, you get to stare at some cows, but most of the time, you’d just enjoy the calmness and serenity that this palace brings.

13. Puraran Beach

After our hike to Binurong Point, we then traveled to experience another beach. This time it’s a surfing destination, the popular Puraran Beach.

But before that, we first made a quick stopover at Alon Surf Stay to have a quick brunch. We witnessed the stunning view of the Puraran beach from the resort. It was also nice of them to treat us to sweet and tasty pancakes.

Alon Surf Stay

The view from Alon Surf Stay.

Puraran Beach

Then, it was time to explore Puraran beach. It was obvious why this is a popular surfing spot. The sound of strong waves crashing through the shore was the dominant sound in the area. What a perfect way to chill at the cottages while enjoying the breeze from the ocean.

We had a seafood-packed lunch too. Delicious!

14. Hiyop Highlands

On our last day in Catanduanes, we traveled for less than an hour from Virac to experience another rolling hills. This is Hiyop Highlands located in Pandan, the northern part of Catanduanes.

Hiyop Highlands

Once we arrived, there were fences all over the place, an indication that the majority are actually private property. But we were able to find a good spot to enter and even enjoy the hills and the view.

At the end of the cliff is a stunning view of the beach below. Oh man, with so many beautiful places that we explored in Catanduanes, this has got to be one of the best. Here are the photos.

Hiyop Highlands

Cute and friendly local kid. Kamusta na kaya sya? 😉

15. Carangyan Beach

It was time to have lunch by the beach. We then went straight to Carangyan Beach Resort , one of the famous resorts in Pandan. We had some seafood for lunch and did our own versions of siesta by the beach.

Carangyan Beach

Luckily, we had a lot of time to spend at the resort. It was also a chance for us to swim and enjoy everything. Just like most of the beaches that we explored in Catanduanes, Carangyan Beach is raw and untouched. The view of some islets makes the experience extra special.

16. Delicia’s Farm

Before even the farm-to-table phenomenon became popular, Catanduanes already has its own – It’s Delicia’s Farm. Also located in Pandan , Catanduanes.

It’s a combination of a resort, farm, and restaurant. The food is of course organic and sourced from the farm. We had a chance to talk with the owner. He was such a joy to talk to. He also had a regular job but then decided to quit to put up this farm. I can still remember his questions to us during our chat. “Do you really want to work 9 to 5 for the rest of your life?”

Delicia’s Farm

Of course, most people in our group are employees from the tourism and LGU so it’s obvious what would be their possible answers, right? But for me who recently quit my corporate job at that time, I have the same answer as him.

They served us a lot of food like vegetables and roasted chicken. Aside from the farm, there’s also a small pool to accommodate guests.

17. Cagnipa Rolling Hills

“Save the best for last.” This is exactly what I feel when we visited our last spot for the day. We trekked a little passing through some hills until we reached the stunning Cagnipa rolling hills.

Cayniba Rolling Hills

Cayniba Rolling Hills

Cayniba Rolling Hills

I thought that I’ve seen enough of Catanduanes. I thought that we’d already witnessed the most beautiful views, but we were wrong. Cagnipa Rolling Hills’ beauty is jaw-dropping. We were there just a few minutes before sunset, so we witnessed a dramatic and stunning scenery as the last rays of the sun bid goodbye to the ocean.

What a great way to end our day exploring the province.

18. Tuwad Tuwadan Lagoon

Just near the Cagnipa Rolling Hills, there’s a rugged stair by the end of the cliff leading to the rock formations below going to a crystal clear blue lagoon.

Tuwad tuwadan Lagoon was named as such because according to some stories, you need to make this “ tuwad ” position, bending over, as you pass through the steep stairs. We were lucky that when we visited, there were already some cemented parts. Imagine going to this place years ago, you really need all the courage for this adventure.

Tuwad Tuwadan Lagoon

Below is a blue lagoon that looks like a swimming pool perfectly crafted by nature to blend with the rugged features. Some couldn’t resist the temptation, they finally gave in to the invite and took a dip into the lagoon. As for me, who is not a good swimmer, I just enjoyed the view. It was also a chance for us to take some awesome photos.

19. Cagnipa Beach & Cove

From the top of Cagnipa Rolling Hills, you’ll witness Cagnipa Beach and Cove. Located in Brgy. Balognonan, Cagnipa beach is secluded and can only be reached by motorbike or boat. But you once arrive there, everything is worth it.

With its azure and clear water, this is a perfect place to relax and commune with nature. If you want some adventure, you can snorkel and witness the abundant marine life too.

20. Virac and the Abaca Festival

The capital town of Virac is a charm in itself. It’s laidback but it offers you also the comforts of having access to delicious food and some leisure activities. Staying in Virac for a couple of days before embarking on a journey to the province is also a nice experience.

One of the best times to visit Virac is in the 4th week of May during the celebration of Abaca festival . It’s the main product of the province and during this time Catandunganons celebrate the bountiful harvest of Abaca and also the blessings that come with it.

Abaca Festival

Trade Fairs, Street dance, and Flores De Mayo featuring gowns made from Abaca are some of the events that you can expect during the festival.

So there you have it, these are the best tourist spots that I visited in Catanduanes when I explored the province. I know that there’s still a lot to explore, share your comments and recommendation below. Who knows, I might come back to Catanduanes and continue exploring this island wonder.

Catanduanes: Updated Guide to Happy Island + 5 Days Itinerary

I have said it before and will say it again — Catanduanes is one of the most underrated destinations in the Philippines. With its pastoral hills, cliffs, and beaches, you won’t run out of places to see and things to do in this province.

Catanduanes is located in the easternmost side of Luzon. It used to be called the “The Land of Howling Winds” since it’s position is open to the path of tropical storms entering the country. Recently, it’s being marketed as “Happy Island” which is a more positive nickname for this beautiful province.

Hali and I went here sometime in 2016. On the first day of our trip, I immediately knew that this place is special. We spent days exploring the province, from the hidden beaches in Caramoran to the now-famed Binurong Point in Baras. In most of the places we’d visited, there were few or no people at all.

Tourism in Catanduanes is relatively new. In fact, its local tourism branch was only established around 2016 as well. There is still so much to discover in Catanduanes.

Here’s a starter guide on your journey here, including a sample 5 days itinerary.

When is the best time to visit

How to get around, catanduanes travel guide map, 5 days itinerary in catanduanes, where to eat, budget and expenses, things to know before you go, what to read next:, how to get to catanduanes.

The easiest way to get to Catanduanes is to book a flight to Virac. As of this writing, Cebu Pacific flies once a day from Manila to Virac.

It will take about 15-16 hours of land travel to get to Catanduanes.

  • Option 1: From Manila (Cubao, Pasay or Alabang), ride a bus with direct route to Tabaco. Fare is about P840, and travel time is 11-12 hours.
  • Option 2: An alternative is to ride a bus to Legazpi. Travel time is 12 hours. From Legazpi bus terminal, ride a jeep or van bound for Tabaco.
  • From Tabaco, ride a pedicab to Tabaco Port.
  • Once in Tabaco Port, you can ride a passenger boat to either San Andres Port (P290 aircon, P220 non-aircon) or Virac Port (P320 aircon, P240 non-aircon). Travel time is about 4 hours. There is also a fast craft available to either port. Fare is P320 and travel time is shorter at 2 hours. However, schedules for the fast craft are limited.

It’s best to head directly to Virac Port, since Virac is the capital of the province and it’s easy to find hotels and resorts there. Other attractions in Catanduanes are also accessible from Virac.

If you got a ferry to San Andres Port, you can ride a jeepney or charter a tricycle to take you to Virac.

Here’s a simplified infographic on how to get to Catanduanes.

How to get to Catanduanes map

It’s important to plan your schedule carefully. As mentioned above, Catanduanes is in the path of tropical storms so it’s not recommended to go here the rainy season.

The best time to visit Catanduanes is during the summer months, from March to May.

From Virac, there are public vans, jeepneys, and tricycles that can take you around or to nearby towns.

The best way to explore Catanduanes is by chartering a private motorbike or tricycle. Rates vary depending on the destination. If you want to explore the attractions in Virac, a motorbike tour will cost you around P500. If you want to go further, it will cost P1000 or higher.

You may also rent a motorbike per day. Rate is around P500.

Top Attractions in Catanduanes

There’s a lot of places to see in Catanduanes. Most blogs only talk about Twin Rock Beach Resort in Virac, Puraran, and Baras but there are more options out there. You can beach bum, island hop, surf, or trek across rolling hills. If you’re into history and culture, there are also old churches and lighthouses you can visit.

Here’s a general rundown of the best attractions in Catanduanes.

Virac is the capital city of Catanduanes. Here you can find city attractions including souvenir shops. Virac is also known for its beaches. The popular ones are the Twin Rock Beach Resort  in Igang and Mamangal Beach Resort in Balite.

To explore Virac, you can move around via public transpo or charter a private tricycle.

Virac is the jump-off point to other municipalities in Catanduanes: to Caramoran and Pandan (left) or Bato and Baras (right). From here, it’s easy to charter a habal-habal or tricycle to get to Bato or Baras.

Places to see:

  • City tour : Virac Cathedral, Museo de Catanduanes, Virac Viewing Deck, FIAT House Inspired Chapel, souvenir stores
  • Beaches : Twin Rock Beach, Mamangal Beach, Balite Beach, Marilima Beach, Talisoy Beach

Twin Rock Beach Resort in Virac, Catanduanes

Caramoran is located on the western side of Catanduanes. The main attraction in Caramoran is the Palumbanes Islands , specifically Bitaog Beach in Parongpong Island.

To get here, from Virac town proper ride a bus or van bound for Pandan and get off at Barangay Baybay in Caramoran. Travel time is 3 hours.

Trips from Virac to Pandan are from 9AM to 1PM only. From Pandan back to Virac, the earliest van schedule is 4AM and the latest schedule is 12noon – 1PM only, except on Fridays where there are vans leaving at 3PM.

Once you get to Caramoran, register at the tourism office. This is also near the port where you can proceed to island hopping. Rates for boat rental start at P1000-1500 for a small one.

  • Palumbanes Islands: Bitaog Beach (Parongpong Island), Tignob Island, Calabagio Island
  • Toytoy Beach

Pandan is next to Caramoran.

The attractions here are close to each other. Cagnipa Rolling Hills is a scenic farmland. From here, you can see Carangyan Beach in the distance. You can also climb down to Tuwad-Tuwadan Natural Pool for a refreshing dip.

I don’t recommend going to the Hiyop Highlands because the trail consists of rough roads and there is nothing much to see there.

  • Cagnipa Rolling Hills
  • Tuwad-Tuwadan Natural Pool
  • Carangyan Beach
  • Hiyop Highlands view deck

Bato is located on the north eastern side of Catanduanes. This is the closest municipality from Virac.

Here you can visit Bato Church and waterfalls. You can also head to Sakahon Beach which is the jump-off point to Bote Lighthouse. The trek to the lighthouse is steep and takes about 30 minutes. I suggest leaving your backpacks in your vehicle. Local kids normally volunteer to guide you to the lighthouse — don’t forget to give them a tip!

Another attraction in Bato is Poseidon Rock, located in the village of Carorian. This is a fairly new attraction, with unique rock formations and natural lagoons. There are also snorkeling sites nearby.

  • Bote Lighthouse and Sakahon Beach
  • Bato Church
  • Maribina Falls
  • Cagraray Falls
  • Poseidon Rock (located in the village of Carorian)

Just further ahead of Bato, you can find the municipality of Baras. It’s known for Binurong Point and Balacay Point, which are scenic pastoral cliffs. You can visit either area for sunrise viewing.

Binurong Point is the more popular one. It’s located within the private property of Kayandit Ranch. It requires an easy trek of about 20 minutes.

Aside from these, you can also find Puraran. Unbeknownst to many people Catanduanes is  famous for its great waves . Puraran is its main surfing spot. In fact, every October, Catanduanes holds an annual surfing competition, the Majestic Puraran Surfing Cup. Surfing months are July to October. Beginners can also visit from March to June.

  • Binurong Point
  • Balacay Point

You can go all the way up to Gigmoto to visit several waterfalls and beaches.

  • Nahulugan Falls
  • Dororian Falls
  • Beaches: Sicmil Beach, Biong Beach, Macalanhog Beach

Bagamanoc is one of the least visited places in Catanduanes, but it’s worth visiting if you have time.

Ilihan Point is one of the most iconic spots in this province. It’s a phallic-shaped rock located in Bagamanoc Bay. It is also called “Boto ni Kurakog” or Fertility Island.

  • Ilihan Point
  • Padre Falls

Here’s a map from the Catanduanes Tourism Board listing the current tourist attractions in Catanduanes.

Catanduanes is part of Bicol Region, so you can enjoy Bicolano delicacies such as laing and bicol express.

Seafood is also available throughout the province. There is an abundance of fresh fish, as well as shrimps, crabs, and lobsters.

The food here is very affordable!

Salamat po ng marami for this detailed blog! Ask ko lang po sana yung sa Binurong Point. Kaya po ba sya i-trek kahit may karga akong bata? Salamat po!

Is fare to catanduanes included in your 4k budget?

Nope, I edited the text to clarify. Also pls note we traveled there back in 2016 pa and during our trip, habal-habal/tricycles do not have a standard rate so expect some adjustments when budgeting.

hi! is it possible na mag rent lang ng motorcycle mismo, yung kame yung magdadrive or habal type talaga? thanks

Pwede naman.

Kezia Sofia Francesca

Hi Kath and Hali! I’m a student studying in Catanduanes, and I hope you could help me because I chose to write an article about the island in a perspective asking, “why catanduanes isn’t THAT known” sort of way, especially in the point of view of people who are not native from the island like me. So I just wanted to ask the following questions, hoping you could help me in writing my paper :

1. Before coming to the island, what were your initial thoughts or ideas about catanduanes? 2. Why do you thinks that catanduanes is not that known or famous in other regions of the country especially in manila?

Your thoughts on these would really help, Thank you! and God bless!

Hi Kezia. I’ll answer you here instead of email.

1. As far as I remember (this trip was dated 2016), we didn’t really have any clear expectation about Catanduanes. We only that it’s “beautiful” from what other backpackers said and it’s where we can find the popular Binurong Point (often likened to Batanes). 2. There’s a lot of provinces in the PH that are not popular yet, Catanduanes is just one of them. You have to understand that the surge of local travel is a recent phenomenon. Catanduanes isn’t that “known” yet but this is starting to change now. Catanduanes though has a disadvantage in terms of commuting from Manila – unlike other places in Bicol which are easier to visit, you need to take an overnight bus and then a ferry to get to Catanduanes. If you’re a typical backpacker that only has 3-4 days to spare for traveling, this isn’t a good option. There are flights to Virac but the schedule is limited and can be expensive unless bought in a promo period. Also, Catanduanes may need more marketing for its tourism… Its geographic location renders it susceptible to strong typhoons, so it’s unlike other tourist attractions where the weather is usually good or at the very least more tolerable. (That saying, we dearly love Catanduanes and think it’s one of the best provinces in the country for traveling.)

I hope this helps. 🙂

Hello! Hoping you could answer. We’re planning to rent a car going to the east and west part of Catanduanes. Our trip is this coming May. We are group of 5. Do you think its possible for us to drive around the island? And is globe or smart LTE working all through out the island? We’re just planning to use waze or google map. Thanks!

Hi Meryl, I can’t remember how the signal was when we were in Catanduanes. I suggest asking the tourism office here – https://www.facebook.com/catanduanestourismpromotion/

Don’t count on internet. Outside Virac it’s very unreliable.

Hi! How much time will it take to island hop Palumbanes? and to tour Pandan? I was planning to squeeze the those two in one day. Hehe.

Depends on you. One day for those is doable, that’s what our friends did. 🙂

Hi meron ba kayo contact ng tour guide like habal sa Virac? tnx.

Hi, Gep. Sorry we didn’t get our driver’s number but you can always ask around.

mariaisquixotic

Catanduanes is a beauty that is so pure. Even if it’s always struck by typhoons during the rainy season, it still boasts of its wonder. I’m glad you found it as a happy place! Even if I’m from Albay and literally neighbors with the province, I haven’t explored it yet. Maybe next time though! Haha.

Btw, I noticed that you spelled Tabaco as Tobacco. I hope you could check it. 🙂

We read this super late! Must’ve been buried under all the comments. Thanks so much for pointing that out, changed it already. 🙂

Hi! To minimize hassle for land trip, you can book a bus ticket in bicolisarog.com for an rsl bus. You can leave your bags in there when you boarded the ferry and come back when the ferry arrives in san andres port. Fare is 825php for aircon bus. Hope this helps. Thanks for enjoying and promoting our happy island! 🙂

Mary Ann Clemente

Wow! Just P 4,000 for two people to tour Catanduanes? Count us in! I would try to take a plane though as I know how energy consuming it is to travel for 12 hours for a light sleeper like me. How I wish we have a drone by that time. Catanduanes really looks like Batanes.

It’s P4000 each for 2 people. I had to re-check that I got it right. 🙂 But yeah it really is cheap. Usually we spend about P5000+ each for a 4-day trip.

How do you feel about this story?

The Catanduanes Provincial Tourism Office has recorded a 37.8-percent increase in tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2023.

In an interview on Wednesday, Carmel Garcia, Catanduanes tourism office chief, said the raise came with increased economic opportunities for tourism enterprises.

She said based on their data, 35,363 tourists visited the island province from January to March, which is higher than the 25,656 visitors recorded in 2023.

Garcia said some 43,142 jobs contributed significantly to the province’s local economy with domestic tourism receipts, generating PHP39.9 million for the province and PHP11.5 million for foreign tourism receipts.

She said the generated jobs include tour guides, transportation personnel, porters, van operators, waiters, housekeepers, vendors and boat operators.

“The long weekend and Holy Week celebration contributed to the increase in tourist arrivals. With our consistent promotional posting on different platforms, it helped. The series of medical missions sponsored by foreigners also attracts tourists, and a group of foreign women surfers who consistently visit our province, really promotes us globally,” Garcia said.

She said with the continuous influx of tourists, the province also continues to increase accommodation establishments to cater to more tourists and conventions.

“As of now, we have 63 establishments in the 11 towns with 672 rooms. We are happy that some of our hotels here are now expanding their room accommodations, and additional facilities are being constructed. New resorts are expected to open this year. The increasing number also shows that we are now being known by local or foreign tourists as a convenient and exciting destination. We don’t just want them to visit the island, but we want them to return and enjoy Catanduanes,” she said.

Garcia said they are grateful that more regional conventions are held in the island province.

The province also recorded an increase in same-day visitors with 103,396 compared to 45,922 in the same period last year.

Trees for tourism

Garcia said the tourism office has an existing program called “Trees for Tourism” to ensure that the natural beauty of the island is preserved.

“Even local tourists, we encourage them to plant trees that include the coastal areas. Meron tayo ng mga species na hinihingi sa Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) so pag beach area ang punta nila, we encourage them, we coordinate with their tour coordinator na maging part ng itinerary nila (We have species that we request from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources so when they go to the beach area, we encourage them, we coordinate with their tour coordinator to be part of their itinerary),” she said.

Garcia said the island province has pristine beaches, scenic natural wonders and rich cultural experiences that are all easily accessible for quick explorations. (PNA)

CATANDUANES: Happy Island Ultimate Travel Guide

Catanduanes  also known as the “Happy Island”  is located in the Bicol Region and its the 12th largest island in the Philippines. The island is surrounded by Maqueda Channel in the west, Lagonoy Gulf in the south and Philippine Sea in the north and east.  The province’s capital Virac is situated in the east of Camarines Sur.

catanduanes tourism office

This island is a former sub-province of Ambos Camarines in the early 1900s and later of Albay but gained provincial autonomy when Congressman Francisco Perfecto filled House Bill No. 301 which separated the province from Albay. Isla de Cobos was the first name given by the Spaniards as many several tribes called cobos living in the area. Then later on called “Catanduanes” a hispanized term derived from the word tandu , a native beetle and the samdong tree, which were both found in abundance throughout the island. Common reference to katanduan or kasamdongan , meaning a place where the tandu or the samdong tree thrives in abundance.

catanduanes tourism office

According to some scholars this beautiful province has a high chance to be declared as UNESCO Geopark Reserve for its rich geologic history.

Catanduanes is a haven for tourists who loves nature tripping for it has beaches, islands, lagoons, caves, waterfalls and rolling hills. This island has a lot for offer, it’s like a one stop destination for it has variety of attractions that every traveller is looking for. I got the chance to explore this island for 6 days but I think I need to go back to explore more.

The easiest way to get to Catanduanes in by plane, there are flights from Manila to Virac or Clark to Virac via Philippine Airlines.   Avoid the hassle of going to Manila for your flight by booking via Clark International Airport . Travel time is approximately 1 hour. There are other options but the easiest and most convenient way to get to this paradise is by plane. You can book your flight at www.philippineairlines.com . You can also check other mode of transportation at: Mode of Transportation Going To Catanduanes.

Exploring the Happy Island

You can explore the nearby attractions by riding a tricycle fare is 8-12 pesos per person within Virac town proper. Jeepneys and vans are also available if you want to travel other towns but I recommend that you should hire a van via accredited tour operators.

Here’s the map of attractions in the island. There are a lot of places to explore but you should be mindful of the length of your stay as to maximize your time and visit most of them.

Attractions in Virac and nearby places

A little history about this town. The spaniards found a tribe under the leadership of one Datu Lumibao, scion of Datu Dumaguil who came to the Philippines with the 13 Malay datus and his wife Melbigan and son Macaco who settled near Vidak spring and founded the first civilized settlement with a score of servant followers and their wives. Some say Virac is a derivation of the word “Vidac” while others claim it is a contraction of the Spanish version of the word burac, meaning flower.

If you have limited time, you should explore Virac first and nearby attractions, if you have ample time like staying for 5 day you can travel right away to Pandan then spend the last 2 days in Virac and nearby areas. Here are must visit places are:  Museo De Catanduanes, Virac Cathedral, Mamangal Beach, Marilima Beach, Batag Beach, Talisoy Beach, Twin Rock Beach Resort and Hicming Falls, Maribina Waterfalls.

If you have enough time you can go to Bagamanoc, here are the must visit attractions: Fertility Island(Boto ni Kurakog), Paday Falls, Pusgo Island, Palestina Rolling Hills, Costa Marina, Loran Beach and Loran Ruins.

catanduanes tourism office

If you are fan of rolling hills, waterfalls and whitesand beaches, you can travel 2-3 hours from Virac going to Pandan. You will not notice the travel time for the road going there is scenic enough to take your breathe away. It’s highly recommended to go to Pandan if you have 5 days or more to explore Catanduanes. Some of the many attractions in Pandan are:  Palumbanes Island, TuwadTuwadan Lagoon, Cagnipa Rolling Hills, Hiyop Highlands, Parway Falls.

Every time I travel I make sure I try something new. Do what locals do as they say so I tried to carry 30 kilos abaca. It’s heavy! lol. A salute to all abaca farmers. Catanduanes is the country’s top producer of abaca. Abaca is used in making textiles, handicrafts, papers, currency notes and fashion products.

catanduanes tourism office

After trying to be an abaca farmer, I take a plunge in their fresh water pool and eat some of the freshly picked organic fruits. This farm is a must visit place in Pandan Catanduanes if you want to detox and relax your body. Experience the farm life at Delicia’s Farm .

This surfers paradise is situated  in the island eastern part. The Pacific waves make it a great place for surfing specifically in  Puraran Beach . For non surfers, it’s fine cream-colored sand and seaside rock formations are scenic enough while enjoying a refreshing swim. Other main attractions are  Binurong Point and Balacay Point.

catanduanes tourism office

Binurong Point  is one the main attractions in the Happy Island. Binurong is often refer as the small Batanes of Catanduanes because of its amazing vistas. You can reach it by hiking 30 minutes, the trail is already established so it’s easier even for beginners. To fully enjoy the view, hike as early as 5am to catch the golden sky brought by the sunrise.

In the late 16th century, Spaniards came to the country, they have introduced Catholicism to the natives, established parishes and built churches,  St. John the Baptist Church also known as the “Bato Church” is one of them, this old majestic landmark was built beside the highway parallel to the extensive Bato River. During our visit it’s under restoration as to preserve the beauty of this amazing landmark.

9 Must-Try Activities in Catanduanes – PH’s Happiest Island

It’s easy to see why Catanduanes is known as the “happy” island, with its rich history, culture, and stunning natural beauty—not to mention the warm and welcoming Catandungan culture. This island province located east of the Bicol peninsula, which consists of 11 municipalities—Virac (the capital town), Bato, San Andres, San Miguel, Bagamanoc, Pandan, Caramoran, Panganiban, Viga, Gigomoto, and Baras—, is one of the Philippines’ fastest-growing tourist frontiers, filled with sun-soaked, water-fueled, and nature-driven activities that will transport you in a one-of-a-kind tourism adventure.

Pack your island-hopping essentials for these nine must-try activities in Catanduanes.

catanduanes tourism office

Ride the surf in Puraran

Located at the municipality of Baras, the champagne-colored Puraran beach provides a safe and consistent surf coupled with “majestic” waves that are some of the fastest and deepest right-handed barrels in the world. This casual surf location has attracted an increasing number of international tourists and has hosted competitions where local and international surfers compete. Experienced surfers will want to hit the waves on September and October when the swells are at their peak. Anyone who wants to warm up and surf more manageable waves may hit Tilod, a neighboring cove that provides smooth, consistent waves all year long.

Soak up to the views of Cagnipa Rolling Hills

Located at the municipality of Pandan, Cagnipa is one of Catanduanes’ answer to Batanes’ mesmerizing topographic rolling hills. This rolling green hills that gaze out into the deep blue ocean and immaculate-white sand beaches will surely catch your gaze and feelings. No matter where you’re walking, you can take in gorgeous vistas. Views of pristine islands, lush hills, seas, and rocky coastlines are some of the most spectacular scenery in the area.

Camping, kite flying, and sunset viewing are just a few of the fantastic activities that Cagnipa Rolling Hills have to offer. The hike down a series of concrete steps leads to a tidal pool called Tuwad-Tuwadan Lagoon, where you may either swim or dive in.

Commune with nature at Maribina Falls

Take a plunge and cool down at the three-tiered Maribina Falls located at Bato. This serene falls with turquoise water is nestled with beautiful greenery. A 15-minute trek will take you from the busy main road to the serenity of the magnificent waterfalls. It is one of the most well-known and most accessible waterfalls on the island. It is about five meters tall with dazzling cascades of crystal-clear water. There are only a few cottages in the area, but you can choose to find a spot close to the waterfalls to relax and have a picnic.

Venture inside Luyang Cave

Explore Luyang Cave, a sanctuary used by the locals to escape the Moro invasions in the 1700s. Despite its poignant history, the cave park continues to draw visitors who wish to explore it and visit the clearing located a hundred meters from its exit.

Situated in Barangay Lictin, San Andres, the cave is filled with bats and towering rock formations. Here, visitors may enjoy a number of different activities, including hiking, prayer offering, spelunking, and photography.

Take in the sights of the Happy Island from a weather station

The PAGASA Weather Radar Station is located in Barangay Buenavista, Bato, Catanduanes, on a mountain summit that overlooks the Pacific Ocean. Make sure to plan a stopover at this weather station as it offers a breathtaking 360-degree view of the bay and surrounding islets. It’s best to visit around sunset to catch the shifting colors of the sky—from clear blue to vibrant oranges and reds—as well as the sea’s enchanting hues.

While at the station, you can also learn some interesting facts about its Doppler radar, which is used as a warning system for incoming typhoons. Inaugurated in May 2012, it’s the first radar of its kind to be built in the Philippines using new meteorological technology developed in Japan, acquired through a grant from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to PAGASA. Two other Doppler radars were built in Guiuan, Samar and Aparri, Cagayan.

Take a two-wheel tour on the island

Travelers who like the outdoors and prefer exploring on two wheels will enjoy Catanduanes. The happy island’s hilly terrain is steadily becoming a popular destination for bike and motorbike enthusiasts, thanks to flawless road links in all of its 11 towns. If you want to get immersed in the local culture, spend more time interacting with the people, and experience the natural beauty that you would otherwise miss, bring your bike or motorbike along (you can transport these to the island via a RORO ferry) and take it for a spin on Catanduanes’ 360-degree routes. There are 10 to choose from, all of which include stops at the island’s main tourist attractions:

  • Virac-San Andres (16.7km)
  • San Andres-Caramoran (33.4km)

St. John the Baptist Church, commonly known as the “Bato Church,” is the province’s oldest church. Notable for its beautiful Spanish-era structure, this architectural wonder stands proudly in the center of town. The church was constructed using mortar and coral limestones to resist strong typhoons, earthquakes, and other natural disasters. Get in touch with the church’s fascinating history by visiting for a quiet moment to reflect and explore. Bato Church is located on Del Rosario Street in Bato town.

Experience the culinary delights of Catanduanes

Catanduanes is not only filled with scenic environments and thrilling aquatic experiences. It is also an oasis of local delicacies and vast culinary offerings that are fascinatingly varied, rich in taste, and history. Some must-try delicacies are tilmok (steamed shellfish with coconut meat), sinalpungan (fried carabeef tripe), and ginataang tabagwang (river snails combined with malunggay leaves or pako in creamy coconut extract). You should also sample their signature sweet treats, such as dawa (made from small-grained, warm-weather cereals), kaluko (made with shredded taro and young coconut flesh cooked in coconut milk), and barisungsong (made from ground rice, coconut milk, sugar, and coconut).

How to get to Catanduanes

By Air : Flights to Virac Airport from Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) in Manila will take about one hour and 15 minutes. Before the pandemic, Cebu Pacific operated four flights each week. At present, however, the volume of flights has been reduced based on the number of passengers allowed and required by airlines.

By Land : You may also take a 10-hour bus ride or a private car from Manila to Tabaco City in Albay, then take a three-hour RORO ferry to Catanduanes. There are three ferries available. Two of them, the MB Regina Calixta and MV Star Ferry, both depart three times daily: at 7 a.m., 10 a.m., and 1 p.m. from Tabaco City and 6 a.m., 8 a.m., and 1 p.m. from San Andres, Catanduanes. Meanwhile, the MV Silangan V departs Tabaco City at 1 p.m and Virac, Catanduanes, at 7 a.m.

Where to stay in Catanduanes

You won’t find five-star hotels in Catanduanes, but you shouldn’t have trouble finding some excellent places to stay. A wide range of affordable accommodations are available on the island, including hostels, pension homes, and inns. These include DOT-accredited establishments like Angeles Homestay in Panganiban, Amenia Beach Resort in San Andres, and Casa Remedios Bed and Breakfast, E. Crown Hotel and Resort, and Villa Tolledo Tourist Inn in Virac.

Getting your essentials won’t be a problem, too, as Virac, the province’s capital, offers a plethora of retail options. There are two major malls: Center Mall and the Virac Town Center, a recently built commercial complex. Other Catandunganon shopping malls include, but are not limited to, Island Savers, Bazaar Supermarket, Virac Fortune Enterprises, Citizen, Century Family Mall, and VMart, all of which offer a variety of goods at affordable prices. There are also several public marketplaces and wet markets.

Several banks like BDO, China Bank, East West Bank, PNB, and Land Bank of the Philippines, among others, also operate on the island, so you don’t have to worry about your financing and banking needs. Regular banking hours are from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Saturday.

Health and safety protocols

Visitors to Catanduanes must follow stringent safety procedures until their arrival. Some important requirements include wearing face masks properly, maintaining appropriate social distance, and regularly washing hands. Catanduanes ready for influx of tourists

LIGAO CITY, Albay, Philippines — After two years of lockdowns and travel restrictions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, tourism players in the island province of Catanduanes are ready to welcome back tourists.

The province has been receiving numerous inquiries from potential tourists, particularly on requirements for those visiting the island since the airport in the capital town of Virac reopened on the first week of March, said provincial tourism officer Carmel Bonifacio Garcia.

The province has only three remaining active COVID-19 cases as of Friday. It has been under Alert Level 1 since March 1.

“There are no longer restrictions for tourists who are fully [vaccinated]. All they need to do is just present [vaccination] card and identification card, and for those who [are] partially [vaccinated] and unvaccinated, negative RT-PCR (reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) or antigen test valid for three days from the date of testing will do,” Garcia said.

She said with the lowering of the alert level, which is locally supported by an executive order issued by Gov. Joseph Cua, domestic flights had expanded and increased. The Catanduanes domestic airport is now catering to four flights every week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday) since March 4. By March 27, daily flights are expected to resume.

All operational

Businesses in the province have started to recover from the economic downturn brought on by the pandemic and have spruced up their establishments, Garcia said.

“All of the establishments are 100-percent operational and all set in welcoming the tourists,” she said on Sunday.

Garcia said the province’s tourism sector had lost around P245 million in revenues over the last two years as the number of leisure travelers dwindled. Some 242,408 tourists visited Catanduanes in 2019, dropping to 56,705 in 2020 at the onset of the pandemic. The number of guests eventually increased to 60,953 in 2021 as more people got vaccinated against COVID-19.

Catanduanes, dubbed as the “Happy Island,” is known for its tourist-drawing Binurong Point and Puraran surfing spot, both in Baras town; Tuwad Tuwadan Lagoon and Hiyop Highlands, both in Pandan town; Summit View Park in Viga town; the long stretch of white sand beaches along Mamangal village in Virac town; islet hopping in Carorian village in Bato town; and the waterfalls of Maribina in Bato and Nahulugan in Gigmoto.

Maribina Falls is the most popular and most accessible waterfall from Virac’s town proper. Its name is the combination of the two barangays where the waterfall is located: Barangays Marinawa and Binanwahan.

The falls is 10 kilometers from Virac town proper. The water from the falls cascades down the mountain into a series of pools that you can wade into.

Binurong Point of Catanduanes

Binurong Point in Baras town is a place that offers equally jaw-dropping views of the open ocean crashing against rocks.

Be prepared for a bit of a hike as you will be passing forest trails, hiking up former pasturelands, skipping through boulders, and walking on narrow paths. But the view from the top of the cliff. especially during sunrise, will be worth the hike.

Other viewpoints near Virac that are also worth visiting are the Balacay Point, and the PAGASA Weather Radar Station.

White sand beaches of Catanduanes

Its simple beauty will seduce you into taking a dip in the water or lie down on the sand to get the perfect tan. On a clear day, you can even spot Mayon Volcano in Legazpi, Albay from Marilima Beach.

There is also a small fishing community near Marilima Beach, so expect to see small fishing boats dotting the coast.

Right next to Marilima Beach is the small, but no less stunning Batag Beach. Its powdery white sand beach is bordered by coconut trees. Behind the trees are small hills that are similar to Bohol ’s Chocolate Hills.

It is said that on a clear day, you can see Mayon Volcano in Albay and Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon from the shores of Batag. Lounge, swim, and have fun with your friends and family while in Batag Beach.

Standing tall since the 1800s, St. John the Baptist Church, more commonly known as the Bato Church, is the oldest church on the island. It’s one of the most preserved tourist spots in the province due to its cultural importance.

The church is a simple, freestanding two-story structure made from coral stones. To get to Bato Church, you can take a 20-minute jeepney or tricycle ride from Virac to Bato.

According to local legend, Nahulugan Falls is named after a farmer and his carabao who fell while crossing the hilltop. Water then began to cascade from where the farmer and his loyal companion fell.

No matter what its real origins are, the Nahulugan Falls is a majestic wonder of nature. Getting to the beautiful three-tiered Nahulugan Falls in Gigmoto is like unwrapping a precious present.

The falls are surrounded by lush forests that filter the sunlight, giving the whole area a secret, magical aura.

Right within Virac is the equally beautiful Mamangal Beach. The beach is lined with trees where you can set up your sarong and lie down on the shaded sandy shore.

At low tide, you can easily see various seagrass in between wave-combed cream sand. Scuba divers can also take the plunge to see marine life off the coast of Mamangal Beach. It is just about 3 kilometers south of Amenia Beach.

Located in the neighboring town of San Andres is Amenia Beach, a long stretch of cream-colored sand and shallow waters that is safe for kids to swim in. At low tide, you can see wave-combed sand that stretches for miles.

If you want to feel as if you have a whole stretch of unspoiled beach all to yourself, head over to Balite Beach.

Locked in between a small fishing village and a mangrove forest, this beach is a hidden gem practically devoid of visitors.

It is also lined with trees along the shore, so you can watch the waves under the shade or while you mingle with the locals.

Also known as the Virac Cathedral, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception has beautiful stained-glass windows surrounding its walls. The church is a reminder of the religious heritage of the province.

Inside the cathedral, the ceiling has been remodeled and patterned to look like the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.  Virac Cathedral is located along Rizal Avenue at the center of town.

11. See the Jesus’ Face Rock at Talisoy Beach

Top 14 Catanduanes Tourist Spots: Beaches & Stunning Views in Virac and Nearby

Located in a small cove a few minutes from Virac town proper is the clean and well-kept Talisoy Beach, also known to locals as Jesus’ Face Beach because of the unique rock formation that is said to look like the face of Jesus Christ.

Beyond this unique feature, you can also go sunbathing on the fine white sand beach or swim in the cove’s clear, calm waters. The seabed is a little rocky, so make sure you wear aqua shoes if you want to take a dip.

You can rent a nipa cottage near the beach if you plan to stay in the area for the day.

Igang Beach is a popular spot for surf boarding and windsurfing. It’s also called the Twin Rock Beach because of the huge rock formations that are located on both ends of the beach.

Because the waters of this beach run quite deep, swimming is prohibited in most areas, though there is a deep pool near the rock formations that has become a popular diving spot for tourists.

Located at Igang Beach is the Twin Rock Beach Resort, so you can book your accommodations there before you explore the other beaches around Virac.

If you’re a fan of heritage, make sure to visit Museo de Catanduanes. The museum displays artifacts and memorabilia that tells the story of the province’s rich heritage and culture.

The museum is on the second and third floors of the old capitol building at Virac town proper and is open on weekdays. It is quite near food establishments too so you can grab a bite after visiting the museum.

A place for reverence and worship, this cave-inspired chapel at Cavinitan's Fiat House is a popular attraction not only for its devotees, but for travelers as well. Its floors and walls emulate the caves, with light from the altar illuminating the whole chapel. You'll feel the peace and quiet once you enter Fiat House.

Take a break from beach-hopping and spend a few minutes in quiet contemplation at this unique chapel that was made to look like a cave. Pray and contemplate while inside and enjoy the solemnity it brings.

(PNA)

VIRAC, Catanduanes (PIA) -- Linie Villaraiz and her friends from Masbate City have already made reservations for the 8th Abaca Festival, which will take place in the capital town of Virac in Catanduanes from May 27 to 31.

The young overseas worker recently returned from Taiwan to enjoy the various Philippine festivals in the month of May, with the Abaca Festival on top of her list.

Villaraiz says that they do not mind the tiring trip by sea and land to reach Virac for the festival next month, as they are eager to witness how the province lives up to its reputation as the country’s top abaca producer.

catanduanes tourism office

The festival's highlight is a float parade in which several participants showcase their creativity using brightly colored abaca and indigenous materials to showcase the local fiber industry, while marching through the town.

“Last year, I missed the fun when I was unable to join my cousins at the Abaca Festival. But next month, I can capture the moment by taking photos and videos of the floats, which are incredible, as shown in my cousins’ footage because of their unique designs,” Villaraiz said in the chat.

Catanduanes, through Republic Act No. 11700, was declared the “abaca capital of the Philippines” on April 25, 2022. This is to recognize the province’s significant role in producing the prized crop for export.

However, the abaca industry in Catanduanes has experienced struggles, particularly after being hit by a series of devastating typhoons in recent years.

Abaca farmers have suffered losses every time a strong typhoon battered the province, which is in the usual path of tropical storms.

According to the Philippine Fiber Industry Development Authority, the typhoons that hit Catanduanes caused a decline in the abaca output. Despite this, Catanduanes still accounts for 30 percent of the country’s annual abaca production. The Philippines supplies around 87 percent of the global abaca supply.

More than 13,000 farmers and 27,000 strippers work in over 33,000 hectares of abaca plantations across the island. The typhoons have significantly impacted their livelihoods, but they have shown resilience and have gradually bounced back after every disaster.

catanduanes tourism office

The Abaca Festival showcases the life and resilient spirit of the people of Catanduanes, according to the Tourism Promotions Board, the marketing arm of the Department of Tourism.

Provincial Board Member Jose Sonny Francisco, chair of the steering committee, said the festival pays homage to the province’s “abacaleros” and “parahag-ots,” referring to the abaca farmers and strippers, respectively.

The festival, which opens on May 27, will have the theme: "Pagkamoot Sa Abaca: Paglaom Asin Kusog Kang Islang Maogma.” (Love of Abaca: Hope and Strength of a Happy Island).

The opening ceremonies will be followed by a parade that will draw participants from 11 municipalities, from Imelda Boulevard to the Capitol grounds. The festival will also feature an agri trade fair for souvenirs and an abaca travel expo to raise awareness of the abaca industry.

On the penultimate day, the grand Abaca Santacruzan will be staged, a sort of fashion show. (PIA 5/Catanduanes)
