Celebrity Eclipse Itineraries

Celebrity eclipse review, review of celebrity eclipse.

The 2010-built Celebrity Eclipse cruise ship is the 3rd of the Solstice-class Celebrity Cruise boats, together with Equinox , Silhouette , Solstice , Reflection . Celebrity Cruises Eclipse ship was scheduled for "Celebrity Revolution" drydock refurbishment on April 1, 2020.

The vessel (IMO number 9404314) is currently Malta- flagged (MMSI 249666000) and registered in Valletta .

History - construction and ownership

Celebrity Cruises was founded in 1988 as the Greece-based Chandris Line (cruise shipping operations between 1974-1996). In 1997, Royal Caribbean International (RCI) merged with "Celebrity Cruises Ltd" to become "Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd" (RCCL). The "X" on ship funnels is the Greek letter chi (standing for "Chandris"). Common features of Celebrity Cruises ships include aft located glass-walled dining rooms, signature alternate dining venues, bars and lounges, spacious Atrium lobby areas, a large number of balcony staterooms, large sundecks with swimming pools, The Retreat (adults-only sundeck with full-size swimming pool, Jacuzzi, cabanas, poolside full bar service). Rooftop Terrace (top-deck outdoor lounge-restaurant-cinema), large Spa (with Thermal Suites), premium retail shops selling top-brand merchandise.

Celebrity Cruises Solstice-class ship model (Eclipse., Equinox, Silhouette, Solstice, Reflection)

The 2900-passenger ship Celebrity Eclipse is the 3rd Solstice-class vessel, preceded by Celebrity Equinox and Celebrity Solstice, considered to be the most environment-friendly in the world, with a photovoltaic system, optimized hull design, efficient lighting system, and hull coatings - innovations, which save 30% more energy. Celebrity Eclipse went into dry dock in April 2015 and came out in May with new features: the Cellar Masters wine bar became the Gastrobar, serving 40 and even more craft beers. Passengers are now able to order drink and food on iPads. A frozen drink bar, the Slush, was added to the pool area. The American-style casino became more British with twelve British-themed slot machines. Eclipse also boasts a private photo studio.

Decks and Cabins

Celebrity Eclipse staterooms (1425 total, in 30 grades) include 66x Suites, 1145 Balconies, 70x Oceanviews, 140x Inside cabins. Most staterooms are sized 195 ft2 / 18 m2. Around 85% of all passenger accommodations have a private step-out balcony. Most balconies are sized 55 ft2 / 5 m2. Wheelchair-accessible cabins are 30. The largest are the Penthouse Suites (1290 ft2 / 120 m2 with terrace sized 390 ft2 / 36 m2).

The boat has 15 decks , of which 14 are passenger-accessible and 8 with cabins.

The multiple dining events include the Moonlight Sonata (MDR), BLU (offering exclusive dining to guests in Aqua Class), Cafe al Bacio, Oceanview Cafe, Mast Grill, the Continental, Murano and Tuscan Grille. Celebrity Eclipse Wiki

Celebrity Cruises Eclipse ship was launched on February 28, 2010. The liner belongs to the company's Solstice-class vessels, with sisterships Equinox , Reflection , Silhouette , Solstice . Eclipse was built by Meyer Werft at Papenburg Shipyard (Germany) .

As newbuilds , Solstice-class liners were among the most environment-friendly marine vessels ever constructed. The Eclipse ship has an efficient hull design coated with light-emitting diodes and an innovative photovoltaic system. This way, the boat's energy-saving increases ~30% compared to a similar-class passenger vessel. Solstice-class also featured the fleet's first new cabin types and categories (ConciergeClass, AquaClass). Around 85% of all passenger staterooms have private step-out balconies.

The ship's namesakes are the two Scenic Yacht Cruises' superyachts Scenic Eclipse (2019) and Scenic Eclipse II (2023).

Celebrity Eclipse Review: Luxury On The High Seas

Celebrity Eclipse

Celebrity Cruises has a strong brand and positions itself as an premium cruise line. I sailed on the Celebrity Eclipse ship as part of my honeymoon cruise from Vancouver to Hawaii, and in this review, you’ll discover what we loved about the ship.

The Celebrity Eclipse offers weekly to Alaska out of Vancouver from May to September in 2023. However, the Celebrity Edge will replace the Eclipse to Alaska starting in 2024.

You can also sail on the Eclipse from Los Angeles, Boston, and Fort Lauderdale. Other destinations also include South America and Antarctica.

On our cruise, the Eclipse lived up to that reputation. If you are a Cruise Critic follower, contributor, or read cruise reviews, the Eclipse won many 2019 Cruisers’ Choice Awards, including:

#3 Best Overall Ship #9 Best Cruise Ships Cabins #7 Best Cruise Ships for Fitness & Recreation #6 Best Cruise Ships for Public Rooms #1 Best Cruise Ships for Service #2 Best Cruise Ships for Value

Celebrity Eclipse Facts

Celebrity Eclipse is a Solstice-class cruise ship operated by Celebrity Cruises. She was the third vessel built in the Solstice series, later followed by the Silhouette and the Reflection.

While the Millennium class ships like the Celebrity Summit are popular, the Solstice class is 30% larger. The Eclipse is the sister ship of Celebrity Solstice , Celebrity Equinox, Celebrity Reflection, and Celebrity Silhouette.

Celebrity Eclipse First Impressions

We boarded the ship at the downtown Vancouver Cruise Terminal after taking the Skytrain from Vancouver airport. It was my first time aboard a Celebrity Solstice-class ship, and once on board, it’s timeless décor impressed me.

Immediately after setting foot on the ship, we were handed a glass of champagne. What a nice touch because it made us feel like we were at a party, a celebration.

This created the perfect start to our honeymoon. Plus, the crew that greeted us were all smiles as we began our leisurely tour of the ship.

The first thing I couldn’t help but notice was the amazing décor. Celebrity is a premium cruise line and makes extensive use of art throughout the ship.

Eclipse library

Its central atrium features a large tree which reaches up to the skylights. Above it, a stunning library with high ceiling provides a great place to read a book.

There was a sense of class and sophistication as we went through various restaurants, bars, lounges, and sitting areas.

Celebrity Eclipse Obstructed Balcony Review

While searching through some cruise deals, we chose Celebrity Eclipse for its itinerary. We had booked an obstructed balcony cabin, and it was immaculate and much what I expected.

Celebrity Eclipse obstructed balcony overlooking the lifeboats

There was ample storage for our clothes and luggage, but we have learned to pack ‘efficiently’ over the years.

Surprisingly, there was storage over the bed. While we didn’t use this storage area, it would come in handy if you’re cruising with more than two.

The stateroom had a large sofa, desk, mini-fridge, and flat screen TV. However, it lacked the USB sockets next to the bed.

While we had an obstructed balcony cabin and could see the top of the lifeboats, it didn’t distract from our enjoyment of the balcony.

The bathroom was roomier than other cruise lines, and I especially liked that the shower had a door and no pesky shower curtain.

It also had plenty of storage, and there was no need for an over-the-door organizer that most cruisers like to use.

cruise cabin bathroom

The Celebrity Eclipse has almost 1300 staterooms ranging from a 183 sq. Ft inside cabin to the 1291 sq. Ft penthouse suite with a separate bedroom. 85% of the cabins have a balcony, so you can enjoy the sea views and relax on your deck.

We later cruised on the Solstice and chose an inside stateroom to compare the space. It was just as roomy with lots of storage too.

CruiseCritic Reception

If you are not a member of CruiseCritic, consider signing up ahead of time. That way, you can attend the private reception put on by the Eclipse Captain and crew at the start of the cruise.

It’s an excellent opportunity to meet other passengers and the crew. Sometimes these groups organize a cabin crawl, which gives you the opportunity to see other staterooms.

Daily Planner

The newsletter is delivered to your room daily throughout the cruise. It is packed with information, and one of the handiest sections is The Daily Planner listing all the activities, games, and entertainment available throughout the ship.

Celebrity Eclipse aft

One handy feature of the Daily Planner is that it is printed in multiple languages for the convenience of Celebrity passengers. During port days, the newsletter highlights suggested shore excursions

Like many cruise lines, Celebrity encourages guests go paperless, and use their app instead. The app features a “my calendar” which keeps track of restaurant reservations, spa treatments, and shore excursions.

The daily planner allows you to look up activities, entertainment, and excursions. If you’re hungry, you can find what’s open at a glance.

Celebrity Eclipse Dining Options

Celebrity Cruise Lines is known for its high-quality dining, and the Eclipse is no exception. In my opinion, Celebrity has the best food of any cruise line I have experienced.

Luminae restaurant for suite guests

The Eclipse has a mix of complimentary dining venues and some specialty restaurants. If you’re cruising in Aqua class, you’ll have access to Blu, and guests in suites can eat at Lumiere.

Reserved for Celebrity Eclipse suite passengers, the Luminae restaurant offers a culinary experience with extraordinary service. The décor is beautiful and elegant as you would expect for passengers in more expensive accommodation.

Described as “globally inspired and cutting-edge dining,” the menu varies but includes entrees such as Veal Cannelloni, Seared Cod, or traditional fare such as Grilled NY Strip.

Main Dining Room

Other than the occasional specialty restaurant, such as Le Petit Chef, we had most of our dinners during the late dining (8:30 pm) seating in the Moonlight Sonata. The décor is stunning, and the seating is spread over two levels.

They also have a two-story glass wine cellar that showcases approximately 1,000 bottles of wine.

The service here is exceptional, and because you have the same waiter/waitress each night, you quickly get to know your servers.

We were greeted by name each evening, and the service was some of the best services I have ever had – on land or at sea!

Moonlight Sonata Restaurant

Since Karen suffers from life-threatening allergies, eating in the same restaurant each night is far safer. Each evening, the Maitre D would visit and go over the next day’s lunch and dinner menus with Karen to accommodate her food allergies.

On evenings when I was feeling particularly hungry and adventurous, I would order two entrees. There were always certain staples on the menu each night, such as New York Steak.

However, they would also add variety with other choices each evening.

Many cruise lines have traditionally had a formal night where guests were required to dress up (suit and tie for the men and formal dresses for the women) when dining in the main dining room.

However, recently, this has changed on Celebrity with their announcement to “Say goodbye to Formal Night, and hello to Evening Chic.”

Men can now wear pants or designer jeans with a dress shirt, button-down shirt, or sweater. A sports coat or blazer is now optional. Women can wear a skirt, pants, or designer jeans with an elegant top, but a cocktail dress is optional.

You can still wear a tuxedo or formal gown on Evening Chic nights if you prefer. Cruises that are seven nights or longer will have two Evening Chic nights, and cruises 6-nights or shorter will have one Evening Chic night. During our ‘Evening Chic’ nights, Karen and I still dressed to the nines!

Oceanview Café

Desserts at the buffet

The Oceanview Café is the daily buffet that is open daily from early morning until late in the evening. We had most of our breakfasts here, and other than occasionally waiting for a table during peak times, we always had a great experience.

Regardless of your food preferences, allergies, or dietary restrictions, you are always able to find something delicious to eat.

Karen was especially thrilled to find food marked with labels showing if they were gluten-free, lactose-free, vegan, or vegetarian.

Table clearing service was always prompt, so the entire crew had been well trained to provide the best customer experience.

One of my favorite times on our cruise was during Easter. The chefs put out a fantastic display of chocolate and various desserts that were colorful and delicious.

Throughout the Oceanview Café, Easter eggs were randomly left for passengers to take. The Easter bunny even showed up to hide eggs for the kids in the Lawn Club.

Eater bunny at the Lawn Club on the Celebrity Eclipse

They would also do occasional culinary themes during dinner. One evening, the theme was Indian cuisine, which was my favorite.

Specialty Dining

The Eclipse offers several specialty dining restaurants at additional costs and not included in your cabin fare. The specialty restaurants each offer a different culinary experience, but all are worth trying depending on your dining preferences.

The specialty restaurants include Murano, Tuscan Grille, Qsine (Le Petit Chef), and Sushi on 5.

The Murano is a classic French-inspired restaurant and offers fine dining in an elegant setting. The menu includes caviar and entrees such as Chateaubriand for Two, Dover Sole Veronique, and Lobster.

Murano specialty dining menu

While we didn’t dine in the Murano on this trip, we tried the food on the Celebrity Solstice , and it was amazing.

Tuscan Grille

Not surprising, this restaurant is Italian-inspired, but its location at the rear of the Eclipse is one of my favorite features because it provides some fantastic views.

It has the perfect spot to catch a beautiful sunset, depending on where you are traveling. The Tuscan Grille menu features homemade pasta, Lobster Alfredo, various steaks, and more.

Qsine – Le Petit Chef

Le Petit Chef at Qsine offers a fantastic dining experience that uses 3D video and multimedia while dining. Qsine is one of the specialty restaurants, and it is best to reserve ahead of time if you want to ensure your seat.

Qsine is also a Celebrity Cruise Line exclusive, which is even more reason to experience it if you are cruising on the Eclipse.

Le Petit Chef is a miniature character that creates your meal for you via a presentation that plays out on your table. The performance is exceptionally well done and entertaining at the same time.

However, the food didn’t quite match the excellence from the other specialty venues. In our opinion, Le Petit Chef is more about the show than the cuisine.

The menu consisted of two different main courses to maximize the impact of the integrated show. During your dining experience, the lights dim, and the silent Le Petit Chef appears on your table while he catches or cooks your next course.

Sushi on 5 offers the traditional sushi rolls, sashimi, hot pots, nigiri, and starters. If you don’t want to eat Japanese for dinner, you have the option to go for lunch.

Sushi on 5 menu

Unlike other specialty restaurants which have a set price, at Sushi on 5, the cruise line charges a la carte pricing. We found the pricing very reasonable.

It’s important to note if you are gluten-free, Sushi On 5 has gluten-free soy sauce to accompany your meal. They can also accommodate other food allergies.

We ate at Sushi on 5 for lunch one day. The service was great and the sushi delicious. We tried the shrimp tempura udon and sunset roll. Both were extremely fresh and well presented.

Sushi on 5 Sunset Roll

Celebrity Eclipse Entertainment

Celebrity prides itself on providing enjoyment for all ages that is high quality and in line with its premium brand. While most cruise lines tout their entertainment, I was very impressed with the range of shows and especially the quality of performers.

Unlike other cruise lines, Celebrity Cruises allows passengers to take photos and encourages them to share them on social media.

The Eclipse Theater is the main stage and provides the same show twice nightly to correspond with the two main dining options.

During our 12-day cruise, we saw rock concerts, local Hawaiian performers, and incredible shows. Our favorite, “Topper,” was similar to Cirque de Soleil.

Topper production show characters next to a giant top hat

Celebrity Central is a smaller theater reserved for movie screenings, comedy shows, and other specialty entertainment. The Easter Sunday Service took place during our Easter cruise in the Celebrity Central Theater.

As one of Celebrity’s largest ships, the Eclipse has many activities available regardless of your age. For me, that is one of the reasons that I prefer to sail on a bigger ship – especially during ‘at sea’ days.

For those of you that are courageous karaoke fans, you have to give the nightly club a try. I can’t sing a song without being way off-key, so I tended to just enjoy the show. Karaoke sessions are held in the Quasar on the Promenade Deck (deck 4).

It was lots of fun, and while you sometimes hear the same people singing the same song multiple nights, there’s always a cheering audience with warm applause.

On a couple of nights, some of the “amateur” singers were professionals who sang in touring bands, so they set a high bar, but regardless of your singing ability, everyone had a great time.

Silent Disco

Silent disco is not unique to Celebrity Cruises, but this is a ‘must-try’ evening activity. It’s a fun activity where everyone on the dance floor is wearing a wireless headset but listening to different tracks of music. You can pick your own theme, and the headsets glow in different colors according to the type of music.

Even if you can’t dance, everyone shakes away and makes a fool of themselves as they jive to their favorite tracks. If you take off your headset, you can occasionally hear cruisers singing along to different tunes. During Silent Disco, you can change your theme if you don’t like the track playing.

The Library

The Library is an impressive two-story sanctuary in the large atrium with beautiful sunlight from the above glass ceiling. Stocked with lots of games and books to pass away the hours, it’s a popular spot amongst cruise ship passengers.

Celebrity Eclipse library

During busy times such as sea days, it’s best to arrive early if you want to grab a table or comfy chair because families or groups will sit for hours playing bridge or other games.

Celebrity’s Hot Glass Class

Unique to Celebrity Cruises is the Hot Glass blowing studio . While any type of fire is usually banned on all cruise ships for obvious reasons, the fire in the kiln burns throughout the entire cruise.

On the Eclipse, head to deck 15, and you’ll find the hot glass blowing class next to the Lawn Club. The Hot Glass Class offers amazing demonstrations and classes where passengers can make their own unique glass sculptures under the guidance of expert instructors.

Jeff Mick and Victoria (Torey) Buckland led the classes during our Celebrity Eclipse cruise.

Fortunes Casino

The casino is your typical fair with a large number of slot machines, gaming tables, and other places to take your money. Yes, you can probably tell I’m not much of a gambler because I know “the house never loses” in the long run.

Since Hawaii does not allow any gambling, the casino remained closed as we toured around the islands during our Honeymoon cruise.

Canyon Ranch Spa

Focused on fitness, beauty, and wellness, the Canyon Ranch full-service spa provides the perfect sea-day amenities. We thought the thermal spa was especially nice as the heated beds overlooked the ocean.

Thermal spa

At Canyon Ranch, you can enjoy a wide variety of activities and services such as fitness classes, massages, skin treatments, teeth whitening, and much more.

Martini Bar

With its ice-covered surface and entertaining bartenders, the Martini Bar is worth a visit even if you’re not a drinker.

We visited the Martini Bar a couple of times just to watch the talented bartenders create intriguing cocktails and the show-stopper Martini Flight in full action.

Children and Youth Services

Celebrity has the Fun Factory for kids and X Club for teens. During peak family season, these areas can often have hundreds of kids of all ages, and the area is professionally managed with a wide variety of activities.

Kid and youth programs are not unique to Celebrity, but they can provide a welcome escape for your kids who may not want to do what you are doing, and they give a chance for all kids to make new friends during the cruise.

The “Super” Captain

I have traveled on several cruises, but I have not encountered a ship captain quite like the “Super” Captain. Captain Leonardos Palaiokrassas is a fourth-generation Captain and has been with Celebrity since 1997.

While most captains participate in the obligatory “Meet the Captain” evenings, the Super Captain could be seen almost daily walking about the ship, engaging with passengers, being on stage in a comedy act with the Cruise Director, welcoming passengers during embarkation and debarkation, and more.

We had the incredible privilege of interviewing him during one of the port days. We found him to be honest, humble, professional, and a genuine person concerned about the welfare of his passengers.

Celebrity cruise ships have two captains who alternate with 3-month terms throughout the year. We had the great fortune to have Captain Leo on our honeymoon cruise to Hawaii.

The Pool Deck

Celebrity Eclipse resort deck

No cruise ship is complete without the popular pool deck. Located on the Resort Deck, passengers can find plenty of loungers to enjoy the sun.

There is a kids shallow pool next to a sports pool, plus a wet zone. Surrounding the pool area are four hot tubs.

Indoor pool

Additionally, the inside pool with two hot tubs provides a sanctuary for the adults to escape the little ones. A covered pool is a must for sailing areas like Alaska, where the weather is unpredictable.

Celebrity’s signature touches of elegance did not go unnoticed with their two-person, padded loungers surrounding the pool. These padded lounging beds were ‘calling us’ to curl up and relax the moment we saw them.

Two person lounger

Laundry Services

Celebrity does not offer a self-service laundromat, so passengers must pay to have clothes laundered during the cruise.

This is something to consider during your vacation because the laundry service available on Eclipse is expensive. Be prepared to add USD 50 to your bill if you have even a modest bag of laundry.

We knew this in advance, so we took enough clothes to last our 12-day cruise from Vancouver to Hawaii. To save money on laundry, I had seen more than one passenger carrying a large plastic bag of laundry that they carried off the ship to use the local laundromat during one of the port days.

Medical Services

Every cruise ship, by necessity, has an area to deal with passengers who may be struggling with various health-related issues. Since motion-sickness is something some passengers experience, you can get Gravol (or similar) to help you throughout the cruise.

The service is open from 8 am-11 am and 4 pm-7 pm daily.

Final Thoughts

Both Karen and I felt had an amazing honeymoon on the Celebrity Eclipse. Our 12-day cruise was magical because of the incredible service, dining experiences, different shows, and the beautiful ship. I have friends who have told me, “they only cruise with Celebrity,” and I can understand why.

If you’re a new cruiser, I would highly recommend the Celebrity Eclipse as one of the premium ships within the Celebrity fleet. Karen and I would gladly cruise with them again.

I hope this Celebrity Eclipse review has provided some useful information and that you will consider the Eclipse on your next cruise!

Breaking news, astronauts’ eerie view of the solar eclipse shown in insane video.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Astronauts on the International Space Station had an eerie view during the total solar eclipse on Monday as the Moon’s shadow raced across the planet’s surface.

Waiting for totality on Earth took more than an hour after the partial eclipse began, but the low-Earth orbit’s view provided context for how fast the Moon’s shadow is moving. According to NASA, the eclipse shadow travels at 1,100 mph at the equator and up to 5,000 mph near the poles.

The astronauts living and working on the ISS orbit the Earth about every 90 minutes, witnessing 16 sunrises and sunsets in 24 hours and up to five eclipses a year.

On Monday, the astronauts could not only see the eclipse as the Moon blocked the face of the Sun, but the Moon’s shadow down on Earth as it blocked the sunlight over the path of totality – looking like a floating black hole on Earth down below.

The ISS wasn’t the only view of the solar eclipse from space. SpaceX founder Elon Musk shared the video below, which was taken by a Starlink satellite in low-Earth orbit.

The video shows the Moon’s umbra or shadow as it moves across the planet.

While the Moon was moving in front of the Sun’s face, solar and Earth-observing spacecraft recorded the eclipse in real time.

The Moon's shadow, or umbra, is pictured covering portions of the Canadian provinces of Quebec and New Brunswick and the American state of Maine in this photograph from the International Space Station as it soared into the solar eclipse from 261 miles above.

NOAA’s GOES-East satellite tracked the Moon’s shadow moving across the Pacific Ocean and North America while the European Space Agency’s Proba-2 satellite recorded the eclipse looking toward the Sun.

From Delta's solar eclipse flight to $200 sound healing ceremonies, here's how people are splashing out to celebrate the eclipse

  • Visitors are expected to flock to states like Texas and Maine to enjoy solar eclipse views.
  • Some are looking for a more unique experience, spending up to $6,000 on tours.
  • Others are spending their cash on more spiritual practices like sound healing ceremonies.

Insider Today

Visitors are expected to flock across the US to enjoy the best views of the solar eclipse; some are traipsing their tents and vans across the country and others are booking into hotels.

The "path of totality" — where the moon will appear to block the sun completely — will stretch from Texas to Maine. And choosing the right location is worth it according to some experts .

Southern states like Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Illinois may experience over four minutes of totality , longer than the average solar eclipse in this century.

But some solar eclipse fans want a more unique experience, splashing thousands of dollars on tours, flights, and rituals.

Here is how people are going above and beyond to get the best views:

Delta Air Lines special solar eclipse flights

Delta Air Lines is offering a flight from Austin to Detroit for those eager to view the solar eclipse from 30,000 feet in the air.

The flight has been planned to maximize passengers' eclipse experience, from selecting an aircraft with extra-large windows to determining the precise departure time, Delta said in a press release.

Related stories

A one-way ticket for the flight started at $749 and went up to $1,150 for those looking for a first-class seat, per CNBC .

The popularity of the first ticket release led the airline to release a second solar eclipse flight, this time from Dallas to Detroit.

A $200 sound healing retreat claims to harness the energy of Mother Earth during the solar eclipse

For those looking for a more spiritual way to enjoy the event, a small business in Vermont offers an 8-hour sound-healing retreat.

The day starts with a talk from an astrologer before launching into a selection of rituals involving herbal ointments (made especially for the eclipse) and sounds from "crystal singing bowls and medicine drums", according to the event's website.

It says the event hopes to provide a "peaceful environment" among the crowds that are expected to visit Vermont.

A $5,000 Texas trip includes viewing the eclipse from a vineyard with private guides on hand

Travel company Smithsonian Journeys offers four different solar eclipse tours in Texas that start at $4,995 and go up to $6,695 for a five-day trip.

In the build-up to the eclipse, customers had private astronomy talks, visited a solar observatory, and hiked through canyons.

The eclipse day itinerary takes place in a vineyard with wine tasting and time in the garden to watch the four minutes of complete darkness with guides available to answer eclipse-specific questions.

Some of the tours end the evening with a riverboat dinner cruise.

A 22-day cruise off the coast of Mexico, with guest lectures from a physicist

Holland America Line's Solar Eclipse Cruise set sail on April 5 and plans to be off the coast of Mexico in the path of totality on April 8.

The ship will be placed in the "perfect location for guests to see the eclipse," said Bill Prince, vice president of entertainment for Holland America Line, on the company's blog.

Despite the eclipse only lasting up to 4 minutes out of the 22-day cruise, the experience is padded with lectures and top tips from University of California San Diego Professor Adam Burgasser.

The price of this cruise isn't publicly available, but the company's other 22-day cruises can cost $3,175 a person.

Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.

Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA .

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality.

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Cruising Altitude: What it was like to see the eclipse from a plane

Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?

Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet.

Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.

Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship

Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.

Must-See Photos from Today's Incredible Eclipse

The first total solar eclipse in North America since 2017 was viewable Monday

Ron Jenkins/Getty

Millions of North Americans turned their faces skyward today, April 8, as the moon passed between the sun and the Earth during the first total solar eclipse anywhere in the United States since 2017 .

Throughout the day, as people ( hopefully ) donned their eclipse-viewing glasses and waited for the skies across America to turn dark in what will be the last total solar eclipse over the U.S. for the next 20 years, many shared pictures of themselves and others celebrating what has been dubbed the Great American Eclipse.

From lines out the door to purchase eclipse glasses to star selfies, see all the ways North Americans experienced the eclipse on Monday.

People in the city of Mazatlan, Mexico, took pictures of the sunset on Sunday, April 7, in preparation for the next day's eclipse. Mexico's west coast was said by experts to be one of the ideal locations to view the total solar eclipse.

"Don't be a Space Cowboy and try to look directly at the sun," the singer added, a nod to *NSYNC's song "Space Cowboy (Yippie‐Yi‐Yay)."

'It's an Elmo Eclipse!'

Many eclipse visitors to northern New England pulled an all-nighter trying to leave

A trip that should have taken Associated Press reporter Nick Perry two hours instead took 12 as he and thousands of other eclipse watchers tried to make their way home Monday. (AP video: Nick Perry)

FRANCONIA, N.H. (AP) — Thousands of visitors to northern New England communities in the path of the total solar eclipse were told to pack their patience for the trip. In some areas, they needed it for up to 12 hours after the event started, inching their way back home on packed interstates and secondary roads.

In New Hampshire, travelers were stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic in the northern part of the state through at least 2 a.m. Tuesday, clogging up southbound Interstate 93. Southbound traffic on Interstate 89 also was heavy Monday evening. Southbound traffic was backed up in parts of Maine for several hours.

New England had clear skies and mild weather Monday, making for ideal viewing conditions for totality. In New Hampshire, people flocked to places such as Lancaster, Stewartstown, Colebrook and Pittsburg, near the Canada border.

But the roads were swarmed on the trip back, and traffic came to a standstill in some areas.

“People were just pulling over on the side of the road going to the bathroom, people were pulling over to shut their cars off, sleeping in their cars all over (U.S.) Route 3,” said Scott Lacourse, who left his vacation home in Pittsburg with his wife and their two dogs at 6:30 p.m. They got home to Londonderry, New Hampshire, nine hours later. That’s nearly three times longer than usual.

“Every rest area, any pull-off, anything, was full,” Lacourse said, adding that there also was no cell service.

Some people who had paper maps with them navigated their way through back roads. Others were running out of gas, and some broke down. Some people opted for the dangerous maneuver of driving across a median ditch and turning back onto northbound lanes. At least one car got stuck in the ditch. Some people who tried to stop for fast food along the way were met by a long line and the realization that the staff had stopped taking orders.

Lacourse and his wife, Sirena Holobinko Bogdahn, thought that if they left later in the day traffic would be cleared, but that wasn’t the case.

In spite of that, “it was well worth it,” she said of the eclipse viewing. “It was so amazing.”

John Martin, who was visiting from Massachusetts, described it as a “creep and a crawl” near Franconia, where Route 3 feeds into the Franconia Notch Parkway, a one-lane mountain pass in each direction, before expanding into the multilane interstate.

“You’re looking at your GPS trying to get off of 93 to find something a little quicker, and everybody else was thinking the same thing,” he told WMUR-TV.

New Hampshire state officials had warned travelers that the return could be slow going and encouraged people to stay in the area, which usually sees its most tourists during the summer and the fall foliage season, for a while.

“To our friends visiting from out of state, remember: there’s no sales tax in NH, so feel free to stay a bit longer!” Gov. Chris Sununu had said Friday.

Traffic also slowed to a crawl in other states.

In Maine, the traffic on Route 4 south from Rangeley to Farmington was heavy and slow several hours after the eclipse but never completely stopped, averaging 8 to 15 mph for much of the 40-mile drive along the two-lane rural road that threads mountains and hills.

In Paducah, Kentucky, which was in the path of totality, along with communities to the west in Illinois, thousands of people crossed the Ohio River after watching the eclipse. Post-eclipse traffic also moved very slowly in places such as southbound Interstate 65 in southern Indiana, and along southbound Interstate 81 in New York and Pennsylvania.

McCormack reported from Concord, New Hampshire. Associated Press journalist Robert Bukaty in Portland, Maine, contributed to this report.
