San Francisco unveils $2.5 million plan for free outdoor concerts
Spring is in bloom, and San Francisco’s flowers — and sound systems — are coming back to life.
On Monday, Mayor London Breed’s office announced SF Live, a series of free outdoor concerts running from May through October. In the coming months, bursts of blues, brass and bass are set to shake subwoofers at parks and plazas across the city, including Union Square, Civic Center Plaza and Crane Cove Park.
The series is scheduled to kick off May 4 at the Golden Gate Park Bandshell with four hours of electronic music, courtesy of DJs DJ M3, Galen and Doc Martin.
The SF Live website lists 21 concert dates. San Francisco hopes that the concert series, produced with $2.5 million of state funding, according to the city’s news release, will aid in the city’s economic recovery, boost local nightlife and raise SF’s profile as a historic hotspot for musical subcultures . (The SF Live website includes an “SF Music History” tab, which traces the city’s musical heritage from the beatniks of the ’50s to the punk scene of the ’80s and beyond.)
Most of the lineups are yet to be announced, but the first seven concerts offer a diversity of genres. A concert billed as Formerly Santana, featuring longtime Santana band members Bill Ortiz and Tony Lindsay, is scheduled for May 16 at Fulton Plaza. Bay Area saxophonist Howard Wiley is slated to lead a jazz jam at the Golden Gate Park Bandshell on June 1. Veteran blues singer Earl Thomas is booked for Union Square on June 13, followed by a DJ event on the 15th at the same plaza featuring SF mainstay Dean Samaras, as well as NYC and Chicago legends Oscar G and Marshall Jefferson. On June 16, 1970s Zambian rock band Witch is scheduled for the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater at McLaren Park, and Pacific Mambo Orchestra plans to rock Fulton Plaza on June 20.
To curate lineups for the shows, the city partnered with local venues, such as El Rio, Bottom of the Hill and the Rickshaw Stop, paying them stipends for their involvement.
“The SF Live project has been a bright spot for Bottom of the Hill this year,” Lynn Schwarz, owner of Bottom of the Hill, said. “It allowed me to book a headlining band I’ve always wanted to book but was too big for my venue.”
A second Stern Grove festival? Brand-new SF summer music series drops

Who needs Coachella’s bloated prices, gnarly winds and equipment meltdowns?
Starting with an electronic-heavy lineup on May 4 at the Golden Gate Park Bandshell, San Francisco has announced a brand-new summer festival of its own: a series of free outdoor musical performances called “SF Live” that will take place all summer at parks and plazas citywide.
Staged by the perennially popular clubs Monarch and the Great Northern, the debut is a full-on rave called “Electric Fields” bringing local veteran Galen of pioneering party Sunset Sound System to the park’s Music Concourse, along with fellow EDM heavy-hitters Doc Martin and DJ M3.
Less than two weeks later, Fulton Plaza will be home to “ Formerly Santana ,” a night of performances from ex-members of the hometown rocker’s band, in cooperation with nearby Civic Center bar Mr. Tipple’s.
SF Live runs through October, with weekday evenings and weekend afternoons devoted to indie rock, jazz ensembles and what’s being described as “high-energy pop acts.” Many of the details for additional concerts remain TBD, but a constellation of local bars and clubs, including Bottom of the Hill, Rickshaw Stop, El Rio, Kilowatt, the Chapel and Madrone Art Bar are all involved, ensuring a broad cross-section of acts.
Overall, SF Live’s vibe appears similar to that of the Stern Grove Music Festival, which has provided free outdoor entertainment for almost 90 years—except SF Live isn’t fixed in place. It’s all made possible through a $2.5 million state grant, conceived by Mayor Breed and the Mayor’s Office of Economic and Workforce Development and secured by City Attorney David Chiu during his time in the state Assembly.
Calling it a gem and a “bright spot for Bottom of the Hill,” owner Lynn Schwarz said the initiative allowed her to book an act she’d long been pursuing but which was too big for her Potrero Hill venue. SF Live, she added, will “help turn SF into a real music city again.”
The news comes as San Francisco has increasingly leaned on live entertainment to hoist itself out of the doom-loop doldrums. Tickets to Another Planet Entertainment’s alt-metal-heavy single-day festival reportedly sold out within 90 minutes of going on sale, proving that the appetite remains strong for huge gatherings in Golden Gate Park during the foggy month of August.
SF Live also roped in some considerable booking talent, as Noise Pop, the local promoter known for its annual festival every February as well as smaller events like the 20th Street Block Party, is helping to program the series. “We can’t wait for everyone to experience what we’ve put together,” said Noise Pop Industries CEO Michelle Swing.
The Union Square Alliance and Parks Alliance each received some funds to brighten up their respective parks and plazas. Perhaps most significantly, Illuminate—the arts organization responsible for large-scale projects like the Bay Lights and the laser rainbow that shone over Market Street during last year’s Asia-Pacific Economic Conference summit—is set to make the Golden Gate Park bandshell a hub of activity.
Primarily known for its visuals, Illuminate is the organization responsible for decking the bandshell out with the words “Lift Every Voice,” the opening phrase to what’s known as the Black National Anthem. Since August 2021, it has worked to stage some 400 live concerts there.
“We’re doing a lot of live music now,” said Illuminate founder Ben Davis. “Our vision is to restore live music’s swagger to San Francisco.”

Andrew Callaghan begins his CHANNEL 5 LIVE tour in San Luis Obispo
- Now Week Month
Beloved investigative journalist and YouTuber Andrew Callaghan began his “CHANNEL 5 LIVE” tour at the Fremont Theater on Thursday, Nov. 3. The show featured never-before-seen clips of Callaghan’s upcoming a24 -produced film, as well as performances from rappers and magicians.
Callaghan, who is known for his deadpan and wry journalism style, began his career back in 2019. With his first YouTube channel, “ All Gas No Brakes ,” Callaghan began to document what he often described as “America’s underbelly” while visiting flat earth conventions, Burning Man and the Talladega Superspeedway, to name a few. This content brought Callaghan and his team to seemingly every corner of the country.
Following a split with their old publisher, Callaghan and his team created a new channel called “ Channel 5 ,” which keeps their trademark humor but also approaches more serious topics with a more grounded lens. As of today, the team has covered the ongoing war in Ukraine, as well as the supreme court decision to overturn Roe V. Wade. With these, Callaghan still maintains his tendency to cover outlandish events such as “SatanCon” and a World’s Strongest Man weightlifting tournament.
Thursday’s show marked the first stop of Channel 5’s first-ever live tour. The crowd anxiously hummed before the show, not quite knowing what to expect. Finally, the lights darkened and Callaghan took the stage in the form of a video presentation. Dressed in his typically oversized formal wear, Callaghan announced the beginning of the show and then rewarded the audience with a series of new clips from the upcoming documentary.
Callaghan then took the stage in person, appearing in a vintage Cal Poly crewneck, and proceeded to introduce himself and some of his team, including Nic Mosher and Evan Gilbert-Katz. After this brief interlude, the audience was shown clips of an upcoming Channel 5 animation, and a full Channel 5 video that was deemed NSFW (not safe or suitable for work) for YouTube and even Patreon.
Interspersed between video clips were surprise live performances from memorable characters featured in Channel 5 videos. Namely, “ The Hoff Twins ” and “ Uncle Pill ” both took the stage to rap The show concluded with a Q&A session hosted by KCPR’s very own David Aronson. With the Q&A, the audience gained insight into Callaghan and his team’s process for filming and creating their videos. Questions were asked about interacting with the many eccentric subjects of Channel 5 videos and the process of creating their first documentary. The Channel 5 team seemed to be having just as much fun as the audience was.
Channel 5 is continuing to tour the country, making their next stop tonight in Bellingham, WA.

Mayor Breed Announces SF Live Concert Series
San Francisco, CA — Today, Mayor London N. Breed and the Office of Economic and Workforce Development announced a new outdoor concert series in San Francisco. Taking place between May and October 2024, the SF Live series brings arts and culture into our parks and plazas through free performances curated by live music and entertainment venues that showcase a variety of local, national and international talent.
SF Live debuts on May 4 at the Golden Gate Park Bandshell with “Electric Fields,” a celebration of electronic music presented by The Great Northern and Monarch and featuring performances by Doc Martin, Galen, and DJ M3. Additional events will take place across May and June at Fulton Plaza, Union Square, and the Jerry Garcia Amphitheater. More information about all upcoming SF Live events may be found at www.sflivefest.com This website will be regularly updated with announcement of new concerts in the series over the coming months.
"San Francisco recognizes the profound impact and contribution of our nightlife and entertainment industry, not only as a source of cultural vitality but also as an engine driving economic growth,” said Mayor London Breed. “SF Live will show off our talented local artists, promote our world class venues and boost the city as a premiere music and arts destination. And SF Live will bring the joy and fun our city and residents deserve right now.”
The goals of the initiative are to showcase and support the San Francisco music and entertainment sector, boost neighborhood vitality, activate open spaces and enhance the City’s economic revitalization through arts and culture. Funding through SF Live covered the costs of producing the outdoor event series as well as stipends to participating entertainment venues that curated talent lineups and promote the performances. The $2.5 million investment is funded through an allocation from the California State Legislature led by City Attorney David Chiu, when he was an Assemblymember.
“San Francisco’s live music scene is legendary and helps make us such a special city,” said City Attorney David Chiu . “I am thrilled the state funding we secured will support our live music venues, aid in San Francisco’s economic recovery, and bring a lot of fun to our neighborhoods. Thanks to OEWD and all of the participating venues for curating incredible talent and bringing us all together.”
“Nightlife and entertainment are economic drivers in San Francisco and will be critical to our city’s continued economic revitalization,” said Sarah Dennis Phillips, Executive Director of the Office the Economic and Workforce Development. “The SF Live concert series is a celebration of live music in San Francisco, and I’m really excited for our residents, workers, and visitors to experience the amazing concerts that SF live music venues are creating in our world-class parks and plazas.”
Each concert offers a diverse lineup of artists, ranging from rising indie bands to well-established jazz ensembles and high-energy pop acts. Attendees can expect a unique and dynamic concert experience that showcases the breadth and depth of San Francisco's musical talent. The SF Live concert series was produced in partnership with Illuminate, San Francisco Parks Alliance, Noise Pop, the Union Square Alliance and Plinth Agency.
“The SF Live project has been a bright spot for Bottom of the Hill this year. It allowed me to book a headlining band I've always wanted to book but was too big for my venue. Partnering with Illuminate, who knows the ins and outs of putting on larger productions in outdoor spaces, has allowed us to focus on the fun stuff! And knowing we're providing this programming to the general public for free is a really great feeling!” said Lynn Schwarz, owner of Bottom of the Hill. “This program is a gem that emerged from the darkness of the COVID era and can get our name out to people who might not be familiar with us, as well as help turn SF into a real music city again.”
Over the next six months, SF Live series concerts will take place throughout San Francisco at iconic open spaces and locations such as the Golden Gate Park Bandshell, Jerry Garcia Amphitheater, Union Square Plaza, Civic Center Plaza, Crane Cove Park, Fulton Plaza, and Eagle Plaza.
Participating entertainment and music venues include: Mr. Tipple’s, The Great Northern, Monarch, Madrone Art Bar, Bottom of the Hill, El Rio, Neck of the Woods, Great American Music Hall, Rickshaw Stop, The EndUp, Pandora Karaoke, Kilowatt, Cafe Du Nord, The Chapel, and The SF Eagle.
SF Live is closely aligned with other successful efforts to promote the City’s recovery through arts and entertainment, and to support the local music and entertainment sector. During the pandemic, Mayor Breed led several important programs to increase access to outdoor commercial and cultural activities, including the $3 million Music and Entertainment Venue Recovery Fund and the Just Add Music outdoor entertainment permit, which is now a permanent program. Since the end of the pandemic, Mayor Breed has continued to champion the nightlife and entertainment sector through fee waivers to help businesses continue to offer outdoor music and streamlining legislation to simplify entertainment permitting and reduce barriers for entrepreneurs starting live music venues.
SF Live is also made possible from the support of the Recreation and Parks Department. "SF Live embodies the natural harmony between music and parks,” said San Francisco Rec and Park General Manager Phil Ginsburg. “Concerts remind us that parks aren't just green spaces; they're stages for community gathering and celebration. Events like SF Live foster a deeper connection between people and their surroundings, amplifying the joy and sense of belonging that music brings to our outdoor spaces." Prior to the pandemic, an economic impact study by the City Controller found that San Francisco’s nightlife and entertainment sector -- including restaurants, bars, nightclubs, live music venues and performing art spaces -- generated $6 billion in local spending while employing over 60,000 people. Nightlife also plays a critical role in the City’s economic recovery and revitalization moving forward.

Study shows how keto diet can be effective for mental health disorders
Mental illnesses like bipolar disease and schizophrenia can be debilitating, but a new study shows how the keto diet can help. The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, low carb diet. The idea is to help with weight loss by starving the body of carbs for fuel. On the flip side, it could increase bad cholesterol, and potentially raise the risk of heart problems. Dr. Shebani Sethi from Stanford Health Care is in the field of metabolic psychiatry, and CBS News Bay Area anchor Ryan Yamamoto asked her about keto, and how effective it could be when it comes to mental health disorders. "The ketogenic diet is a moderate protein diet, it often gets misconstrued as a high protein diet," said Dr. Sethi. "So it's a moderate protein diet, low carbohydrate, low fat, and it is an intervention that we do use." "Right now we've tested it in those with serious mental illness like schizophrenia and bipolar, and we think it's helpful because it's helping stabilize neuronal membranes, stabilize mood," said Dr. Sethi. "And in the study, what we did is look at a 4-month period to see what the outcome would be for psychiatric symptoms and we improvements in sleep, mood, quality of life, even in some cases reduction in hallucinations frequency and voices that we hear for those with schizophrenia and psychosis," said Dr. Sethi. "So it's been a promising, positive outcome in this pilot study, but there's more research to be do, of course." The study was published in ScienceDirect.
