We have forged a new pathway for tourism development in Chhattisgarh with a fresh vision, strategy: Bhupesh Baghel

In a q&a, chhattisgarh cm bhupesh baghel describes the scope of tourism in the state. from religious tourism with ram van gaman path, to stunning and offbeat destinations in bastar and surguja, there’s something for every kind of traveller to chhattisgarh. edited excerpts:.

What is the USP of Chhattisgarh?

Bhupesh Baghel, Chief Minister, Chhattisgarh

Chhattisgarh, situated in the heart of India is rich in biodiversity and distinct culture. It’s the ninth largest state with a plethora of mythological tales and epics, archaeological and heritage sites dating back to the era of Kalchuris. The unique tribal relevance, has always created a special place for Chhattisgarh, as a religious, cultural and an incredible tourism destination of historical importance. Chhattisgarh is blessed with picturesque natural sites as well such as Buddhist Stupa in Sirpur, Chitrakot fall in Bastar , Tirathgarh Fall, Ganeshji’s Statue in Barsur, the oldest theatre in Ramgarh. There is a lot of scope in tourism in Chhattisgarh from Bastar to Surguja.

Chhattisgarh has come up with a new model of developing the economy by investing in projects such as the Ram Van Gaman Path. Do you think it can be a model for other states?

Nine sites in Chhattisgarh will be developed as tourist destinations in the first phase under the ‘Ram Van Gaman Tourism Circuit’ project. The ‘Van Gaman Path’ is the route taken by Lord Ram on his way to the 14-year exile, and he has spent most of his time in exile in Chhattisgarh. Besides developing tourist destinations, we also aim to create employment opportunities for the people of the state.

Ram Van Gaman Tourism Circuit Project, the first of its kind in the country has garnered appreciation from various leaders. Our neighbour Madhya Pradesh is also going to follow it. These schemes are a win-win as through them, the cultural and religious places are revamped and beautified, which will attract lakhs of tourists which will help in boosting the economy and will also create jobs for the youth.

Will projects such as Ram Van Gaman Tourism Circuit make the state a popular tourist destination?

Chhattisgarh has always stood out as an appealing option for the tourism sector. To treasure the memories of Lord Ram’s stay in Chhattisgarh and to encourage the culture and tourism in the state, we are implementing Ram Van Gaman Tourism Circuit. Under this project, the first phase involving the development of the 9 marked spots is being put into action. Apart from landscaping these places, the development of tourism facilities is also being planned to make the places at par with the world tourism standard. The projects will restore and develop all the places linked to Lord Ram starting from Koriya district in North Chhattisgarh to Sukma district in South Chhattisgarh.

All the places in the circuit will be developed and renovated according to the Ramayana theme. The project will not only inform and educate the new generation of the state about its glorious past but will bring tourists from across the world to our state. It will create new employment opportunities for the people besides making Chhattisgarh a tourism-friendly state.

You have been actively promoting the tribal culture in the state. Would you elaborate on its importance?

Our government is promoting the indigenous festivals, fairs, art, culture and tourism of the state. We want to take forward the culture of Chhattisgarh. Tribal communities have been exploited for years. We have organised various events to honour and celebrate tribal culture and to give a message that united we can move forward towards a better future of inclusive development. Chhattisgarh, has 42 tribes and 5 special backward tribes and their population is one-third of the total population of the state. All the tribes have a distinct cultural identity. Their dialect, festivals, dance, and deities are also different. We are always ready to observe, learn and showcase the cultural diversity of the tribes.

What initiatives has been taken by your government to promote the cultural heritage of Chhattisgarh?

Chhattisgarh is known for its rich culture and tradition. The tribal dominated state is famed for its multi-ethnic culture comprising varied forms of traditional art and crafts, folk songs and dances, regional festivals and fairs and amusing cultural fests. The state government has formed “Chhattisgarh Culture Council”, which would establish a new cultural identity of Chhattisgarh at national-level. It would also provide an opportunity to bring out the hidden talents of the state. The objective is to preserve, protect and promote the rich cultural heritage of the state, its literature, language and dialects, folk music, dance-drama, theatre, art, cinema, tribal and folk arts, and folk festival besides honouring the subject experts and encouraging them to share their knowledge and expand their work in this field.

Promoting Teej-festival, opening of “Gadh Kalewas” in every district to promote state’s ethnic food and declaring public holidays on Teej, Hareli, Chhath Pooja, International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples, Karma Jayanti and Cherchera Punni-Shakambhari Jayanti were some of the initiatives taken by my government to preserve and promote the state’s identity. Increasing use of the Chhattisgarh dialect in the administration has helped us in promoting the regional identity.

What efforts are being undertaken to change people’s perception about Chhattisgarh? Do you believe that your government will be able to attract tourists to visit remote areas like Bastar?

I want people to know that Bastar is the new normal. Tourists have to understand that there is much more in Chhattisgarh than Naxalism. Chhattisgarh has immense potential in tourism sector. There are many places and areas which are unexplored and my government has been working hard to promote these. We have connected Bastar through air services. We are also planning to organise art, culture, sports, theatre and other cultural events in Bastar as now it will be convenient for tourists, celebrities and participants from across the world to reach here.

What initiatives are being undertaken by the Chhattisgarh government to generate employment for the youth of Naxal-affected Bastar and get them to mainstream?

As I told you earlier, connectivity to Bastar will unleash major opportunities and possibilities for development in the region. It will lead to extensive growth and expansion in employment oriented sectors such as business, education, medical science, tourism etc. Think B (’Technology Hub and Innovation for Knowledge Bastar’) is an initiative for the youth of Bastar. Through this, we are encouraging the youth for innovation, self-employment and entrepreneurship. Another initiative is Badal (’Bastar Academy of Dance, Art, Literature and Language’) institution through which various tribal arts, folk songs, choreography, craftsmanship, culture, language, literature, food and clothing will be preserved and developed. With this, the youth will get work of their interest while staying connected with their roots. We have been successful in setting up a ready-made garment factory branded as DANNEX, a cashew processing unit, coffee and papaya production in barren land.

Various employment opportunities have been created for the youth in rural and forest areas. Several measures have been taken for procurement of forest produce at the minimum support price and we are doing their value addition too.The three-pronged strategy of trust, development and security to improve the law and order situation in the state proved successful in effectively checking the Naxal menace.

We are also promoting Bastar coffee which has unique flavor and Jashpur’s tea. We have also decided to open Bastar Café in Raipur and New Delhi to promote the homegrown coffee brand. There are plans to expand coffee cultivation to other districts of Bastar region, which includes seven Maoist-affected districts of Chhattisgarh to promote tourism and create employment opportunities.

What steps has the Chhattisgarh government taken to attract investments in the field of tourism?

Chhattisgarh has been making all efforts to provide a conducive environment to the investors. We have made several attractive provisions in the tourism policy of Chhattisgarh for tour operators, travel agencies, entrepreneurs and hoteliers. Along with the local investors, businessmen of other states are also being encouraged to invest. We have also adopted strategies to encourage private, community and public participation. Necessary facilities and new infrastructures are also being developed for tourists. Innovations such as construction of tribal tourism circuit, home stay arrangements, and guide training programmes are also being done. We have forged a new pathway for tourism development in Chhattisgarh with a fresh vision and strategy for a state blessed with an abundance of raw and unexplored potential.

Chhattisgarh’s tourism circuit has given a new roadmap of tourism development that passes through areas which were neglected and left unexplored despite being, a junction of nature’s beauty and cultural wealth. The major objective is to bring the development of forest dwellers residing in remote regions of the state, into the centre of the economy with the promotion and development of tourism sector in these regions.

Here faith has been linked to tourism. Is this the reason for focusing more on organising religious events at such a big scale in Chhattisgarh?

Chhattisgarh has very high-value culture and traditions. No era is complete without Chhattisgarh’s contribution — whether it is Tretayug, Dwaparayuga or the Buddhist era. Our presence is there in every era in the form of culture, folk, literature and tribal art. The state government’s objective behind organising such events is to make the people aware about the religious significance of Chhattisgarh. Pilgrims who go for ‘Char Dham Yatra’ are unaware that the fifth Dham is in the middle of the country. Pilgrimage of Shivrinarayan is called the fifth Dham of India. Shivrinarayan, situated at the confluence of Shivnath, Mahanadi and Jonk, has been important in every era. It is the place where Mata Shabri had fed Lord Rama sweet berries during the exile period.

How does the Chhattisgarh government plan to give religious tourism of the state international recognition?

Our religious festivals like Bastar Dusshera are already attracting tourists from across the world. We have also undertaken an initiative to organize the National Tribal Dance Festival to promote, preserve, and provide a platform to showcase the rich, vibrant, and state’s unique tribal culture and cultural exchange among indigenous people coming from across the country and abroad. This has given the state a special recognition at the international level. Each dance form in Chhattisgarh is a way of worshipping God.

How is Chhattisgarh taking forward the mission of organic food processing ? Is it helping locals?

Gothans are being developed into multi-activity centers, promoting livelihood activities through the production of vermi-compost, incense sticks, eco-friendly paint, paper cement and bricks with Cow dung as the base material. Other multi sector activities are also being promoted at the Gothan which includes milk production, fish farming, goat rearing, green fodder production, processing of minor millets like Ragi, Minor forest produce, lac, medicinal and aromatic plantations among other. These Gothans are now being developed into Rural Industrial Parks for production, processing and marketing of locally available commodities and products, for which capacity building of rural youth is being done and means of livelihood are being provided at the local level, that is improving their economic condition.

We are also establishing processing plants into an organised industry to benefit lakhs of tribal families. Chhattisgarh Tribals who live within the forest have greater value for flowers, leaves, tree saps, molds and more as these are converted into useful products.

Thousands of Women Self Help Groups are processing a long list of products which has created organic, natural and sustainable products for the society. From pickles to cookies, spices to coconut oils, the list is never-ending. Mahua flower collected in Chhattisgarh has made an international mark due to its premium quality. Mahua is being processed by the tribals into a variety of products such as ladoos, juice, cookies, chocolates and liquor. This has increased tribal’s income to many folds.

What are the destinations being covered in Ram Van Gaman Path circuit?

Ayodhya is Shri Ram’s ‘Janambhoomi’ whereas Chhattisgarh is his ‘Karmbhoomi’. In this project, the sites related to the exile period of Lord Rama are being conserved and developed from Korea district of North Chhattisgarh to Sukma district of South Chhattisgarh.

We have identified 75 places that echo the stories of Ram, Laxman and Sita living in the forests of Chhattisgarh. In the first phase, we have plans to develop 9 sites. These include: Sitamarhi Harchauka (Korea), Ramgarh (Sarguja), Shivrinarayan (Janjgir-Champa), Turturiya (Balodabazar), Chandkuri (Raipur), Rajim (Gariaband), Sihawa Saptarishi Ashram (Dhamtari), Jagdalpur (Bastar) and Ramaram (Sukma).

What is the importance of Ram Van Gaman Path Tourism circuit for Chhattisgarh and how is it being promoted by ?

When it comes to places of religious significance, Chhattisgarh has a long list to offer to tourists. Lord Rama resides in the heart of people of Chhattisgarh. The aim of Ram Van Gaman tourism circuit is to preserve the memories linked to Lord Ram’s stay in the state during his exile from Ayodhya. Chhattisgarh is also known as the maternal home of Lord Rama. Lord Rama spent most of the time in Dandakaranya region of Chhattisgarh during his 14 year exile. Moreover, the state, being the birthplace of Mother Kaushalya, Shri Ram is also worshiped as a nephew of Chhattisgarh. Therefore, Chhattisgarh holds special significance in the life of Lord Rama. For the purpose of conserving and beautifying the cultural heritage, traditions and relics of the Ramayana period in Chhattisgarh, we have started this project.

Chhattisgarh: ‘Ram Van Gaman Tourism Circuit’ project to be inaugurated on Oct 7

Under the ‘ram van gaman tourism circuit’, all significant places which lord ram had visited during his exile will be connected via road network and ultramodern facilities, the official said..

'van gaman path'

Nine sites in Chhattisgarh will be developed as tourist destinations under the state government’s ambitious ‘Ram Van Gaman Tourism Circuit’ project which will be inaugurated at Chandkhuri near Raipur on Thursday, an official said. As per mythology, the ‘van gaman path’ is the route taken by Lord Ram on his way to the 14-year exile, and it is believed he spent most of his time in exile in Chhattisgarh.

Chandkhuri, a village located 27 km from the state capital Raipur, is considered as the birthplace of Mata Kaushalya, the mother of Lord Ram. Under the ‘Ram Van Gaman Tourism Circuit’, all significant places which Lord Ram had visited during his exile will be connected via road network and ultramodern facilities, the official said. In the first phase of the tourism project, nine sites will be developed, including two in Surguja division.

“Of the two sites, one is ‘Sitamadi-Harchauka’ in Korea district, while another is in Ramgarh area of Surguja district,” a public relations department official said. The inauguration of the ‘Ram Van Gaman Tourism Circuit’ on Thursday from Chandkhuri is going to establish these two important places on the country’s tourism map, he said.

Grand preparations are being made to organise a three-day celebration on the occasion of Navratri (beginning from Thursday) for the launch of the project at Chandkhuri, he said. The official also said the first phase of development and beautification of the ancient Mata Kaushalya temple at Chandkhuri has been completed under the project. This temple is an important part of the ‘Ram Van Gaman Tourism Circuit’, he said.

During the exile period, Lord Ram had entered Chhattisgarh from Korea district and Sitamadi-Harchauka in Janakpur of Bharatpur Tehsil is believed to be his first stop in Chhattisgarh, the official said in a statement. There are 17 chambers in the caves of Sitamadi-Harchauka near the bank of the Mawai river. The place is also known as ‘Sita Ki Rasoi’ and a ‘shilakhand’ there is believed to be the footprint of Lord Ram, the official said.

According to research scholars, Lord Ram had passed through nearly 75 places in the state during his exile.

In the first phase, some of the selected places falling on the forest route taken by Lord Ram will be developed as tourist destinations at a cost of Rs 137.45 crore, an official earlier said, adding that the project will also create employment opportunities

Phase-I of Chhattisgarh govt's 'Ram Van Gaman tourism circuit' project to be complete by mid 2023

Shivirinarayan (Chhattisgarh) [India], April 8 (ANI): Chhattisgarh government’s ambitious project ‘Ram Van Gaman tourism circuit’ is expected to complete its first phase by the end of this year or by mid of 2023.

In the first phase of this project, the plan is to develop nine spots that fall on the forested route that Lord Rama traversed. These sites include Sitamarhi Harchauka (Korea), Ramgarh (Sarguja), Shivrinarayan (Janjgir-Champa), Turturiya (Balodabazar), Chandkuri (Raipur), Rajim (Gariaband), Sihawa Saptarishi Ashram (Dhamtari), Jagdalpur (Bastar) and Ramaram (Sukma).

Last year, on the occasion of Ram Navami, renovated Kaushalya Mata temple was inaugurated in Chandhkhuri.

Anil Kumar Sahu, Managing Director, Tourism Department Chhattisgarh told ANI that a total of 135 places have been identified by the state government where Lord Rama spent his time during his exile of 14-years.

“Of them, nine places will be developed in the first phase of the ‘Ram Van Gaman tourist circuit’ project. From Sitamarhi’s Harchouka in the Northern part of Chhattisgarh, the project will cover the area at Ramaram in the Sukma district in the state. Of the nine places identified for decoration and development in the first phase, work in Shivrinarayan has been finished,” Sahu said.

The official further said that “Chhattisgarh is being developed as a religious tourist place and the Chhattisgarh government aimed to finish the first phase target by the end of 2022 or in the middle of 2023.”

Asked whether the ‘Ram Gaman tourist circuit’ will increase tourism in Chhattisgarh, Sahu said, “A place named Chandrakhur, where development under this project was done in July 2021 and the inauguration was done in October 2021, is now attracting thousands of people. The place where hardly 50-100 people used to visit is now attracting 4,000 to 5,000 people everyday.”

With the project, Sahu said, religious places will be decorated.

“There is a plan for ‘Ram Gaman circuit’ in entire India but Chhattisgarh is the first state where this project is being given shape while other states are making only plans. Of the nine places identified in the first phase, work has been finished at two places and from are under development. The project has really impacted Chhattisgarh tourism. Tourism has increased in Chattish due to this project,” added Sahu.

The official shared the input at a state-level Ramayana recital competition at Shivirinarayan, a prominent pilgrimage centre, where Lord Ram had stayed for nearly 12 years of his 14-year exile.

The contest — the first such organised by the government — started as part of three-day (on April 8, 9 and 10) inaugural function of the first Phase works of ‘Ram Van Gaman tourism circuit’ project.

‘Ramayana Mandalis’ belonging to each district across Chhattisgarh took part in the competition with their renowned artists and singers performing ‘Manas Gayan’ (recital of Ramcharitmanas) during the event that will conclude on April 10 with state Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel inaugurating the renovated Shivrinarayan temple.

As per Chhattisgarh government officials, the state has a historical, archaeological and religious significance, and for the purpose of conserving and beautifying the cultural heritage, traditions and relics of the Ramayana period in Chhattisgarh, the work of infrastructure development, restoration and beautification is being done at nine places in the first phase of the project under ‘Ram Van Gaman tourism circuit’.

The Chhattisgarh government has chosen Shivirinarayan for the inauguration of the nine places under Phase-I of the ‘Ram Van Gaman tourism circuit’.

Shivrinarayan, a land of mythology and spirituality, lies on the banks of Mahanadi in Janjgir Champa district, around 130 km from Raipur. This is the place where Shabari, a character in Ramayana, is believed to have offered Lord Rama the berries that she tasted first to ensure he got only the sweetest ones.

According to the state’s cultural department, Chief Minister Baghel will dedicate to the people the development works carried out at Shivirinarayan as part of the state government’s ambitious Ram Van Gaman Path, a tourism circuit connecting all the places visited by Lord Ram during his stay in this region. It’s believed Lord Ram spent 12 of the 14 years of exile in areas that are now in Chhattisgarh.

Two days ago Baghel informed that the state government is developing nine places under the ‘Ram Van Gaman circuit’ project and Shivirinarayan is second on the list after the recent renovation of the ancient Mata Kaushalya Mandir, the only temple dedicated to the mother of Lord Ram, at Chandkhuri near Raipur.

Chhattisgarh government is developing a tourism circuit under the ‘Ram Van Gaman tourism circuit’ project from Harchouka in Sitamarhi, passing through Koriya district in the state’s northern region till Ramaram in Bastar’s Sukma district, which is in Dandakaranya.

Ram Van Gaman Tourism Circuit

Ram van gaman path.

Chhattisgarh is a state that is proud of its culture and traditions. It reveres Gods of all faiths and treats them as equal. However, Lord Ram has had the most significant impact on the state’s culture and history. He is not only a supreme deity who is worshipped and cherished but also an ideal of life for the state’s residents. Some of the most crucial scenes in Ramayana, an epic that narrates the life story and adventures of Lord Ram, take place in Chhattisgarh. It is to underpin this legacy of Lord Ram that the Chhattisgarh Government has come up with the idea of developing the Ram Van Gaman Tourism Circuit.

Historical Significance of the Ram Van Gaman Path and Ramayana

lord Rama image

Ramayana is one of the most iconic religious texts in Indian mythology. Its historical significance cannot be stressed enough. The epic has shaped the values of prominent leaders and pioneers of our society with its universal lessons of truth and the victory of good over evil. The Ram Van Gaman Tourism Circuit emphasizes this universal message of Ramayana by marking the path that Lord Ram had traveled in the course of his wanderings during his exile when he was accompanied by his brother Lakshman and wife Sita. The path will identify and mark the footsteps of Lord Ram as he led the arduous life of an ascetic, away from the fame and royalty of his Ayodhya palace. The Ram Van Gaman Path will, therefore, pay a worthy tribute to the important era in Treta Yug when Lord Ram set a glorious example of righteousness by following his father King Dashrath’s command.

History of Lord Ram in Chhattisgarh

lord Rama image

There are many facts that link Lord Ram and Ramayana with Chhattisgarh. The state is the maternal home of Shri Ram as his mother, Mata Kaushalya, was born in Chandkhuri, a town located 27 Km. away from Raipur. However, the most relevant connection between the Suryavanshi prince and Chhattisgarh is the fact that he spent about 10 years of the 14 years of his exile in the forests of the state. During this time, he is said to have traveled to 75 places, that the State Government wants to develop as religious tourism spots. Interestingly, the relationship between Ramayana and Chhattisgarh doesn’t end here.

The Ashram of the great sage Valmiki, who composed Ramayana in 24,000 verses, is said to be located in Turturiya village in the Balodabazar district. Additionally, it was this hermitage that Mata Sita had taken shelter in when she had been banished from Ayodhya. She had also given birth to the twins Luv and Kush here.

Retracing Footsteps of Shri Ram in Chhattisgarh

The Ram Van Gaman Tourism Circuit aims to retrace the sacred footsteps of Lord Ram in Chhattisgarh by developing all the places that he had travelled during his exile into tourism spots.

The State Government aims to complete the first phase of this project either by the end of 2022 or the middle of 2023. Under the first phase, 9 places have been marked for infrastructure development, restoration, and beautification.

Phase 1 in Ram Van Gaman Tourism Circuit.

Under the first phase of the Ram Van Gaman Tourism Circuit, the following nine places that are spread over a distance of 2260 Km. will be developed:

Reviving the Ram Van Gaman Path for Tomorrow

The Ram Van Gaman path will acquaint future generations with the traditions and relics of the Ramayana era in Chhattisgarh. It will make them aware of the cultural relevance of their state, encouraging them to preserve and protect their culture. The project dedicated to the memories of Shri Ram is set to achieve phenomenal success in securing Chhattisgarh’s place on the map of religious tourism.

Chhattisgarh CM to kickstart 1st Phase of 'Ram Van Gaman' project tomorrow to boost tourism

On the bank of Mahanadi, Shivrinarayan town as well as the entire state hopes to attract tourists in the coming days as Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel is set to inaugurate his government's ambitious 'Ram Van Gaman tourism circuit' project's first Phase works here on Sunday-- coinciding on the occasion of Ram Navami, the birthday of Lord Rama. Almost the entire Baghel government's cabinet is likely to be present in the grand three-day ceremony which was kickstarted on Saturday with the beginning of a Ramayan recital contest-- a first of its kind event organised by any government earlier in the state at this level.

For the purpose of conserving and beautifying the cultural heritage, traditions and relics of the Ramayana period in Chhattisgarh, the work of infrastructure development, restoration and beautification is being done at nine places under 'Ram Van Gaman tourism circuit'. The 8th Century old Shivrinarayan temple in Shivrinarayan town, a prominent pilgrimage centre, where Lord Ram had stayed for nearly 12 years of his 14-year exile in the Dandakaranya region of Chhattisgarh, is among the nine places whose works will be inaugurated by Chhattisgarh CM on Sunday.

The tourism department has identified 75 sites of Ram Van Gaman Path in Chhattisgarh based on various research papers and ancient beliefs after discussion with historians. All the sites echo the stories of Ram, Laxman and Sita living in exile in the forests of Chhattisgarh. As per the legend, in Treta Yug Chhattisgarh was known as Dakshin Kosal and Dandkaranya. Lord Rama travelled all the way from North India to Chhattisgarh, and after spending nearly four months at various places of Chhattisgarh, he moved to South India. Lord Rama had entered Chhattisgarh from a place named Harchauka Sitamadi via the Gawai river of the Koriya district.

In the first phase of this project, the plan is to develop the nine spots that fall on the forested route that Lord Ram traversed. These sites include Sitamarhi Harchauka (Korea), Ramgarh (Sarguja), Shivrinarayan (Janjgir-Champa), Turturiya (Balodabazar), Chandkuri (Raipur), Rajim (Gariaband), Sihawa Saptarishi Ashram (Dhamtari), Jagdalpur (Bastar) and Ramaram (Sukma). Last year, on the occasion of Ram Navami, Chhattisgarh CM had inaugurated and renovated the Kaushalya Mata temple in Chandhkhuri.

According to Hindu mythology from the age of Ramayana, Sabari Ashram is situated here. The temple of Shivarinarayan is a great piece of work by Vaishnav Shaili by the Vaishnav community. During Magh Purnima a grand fate is being organized here. It is a place of worth watching for tourists. Mahant Ram Sundar Das, Shivrinarayan Temple Mathadhees, told ANI that the place has the pride of being the birthplace of Mata Shivri.

"This place has the distinction of being one of oldest religious places. There is a confluence of three rivers-- Mahanadi, Jivnath river and Jonk river-- at this place. Situated on the banks of these rivers, this is Shivrinarayan Nagar, where Shivrinarayan temple is situated." Projecting the benefits of the works being done under the 'Ram Van Gaman tourism circuit', Das said, "Till now, we were not able to spread the importance of this temple. I congratulate Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel for raising the issue in his cabinet to develop 75 places where Lord Rama is stated to be visited during his 14-years exile.

"A total of 75 such places have been identified and Shivrinarayan has been set as the main centre point in the development and renovation work. In the first phase, mother Kaushalya's birthplace in Chandrakhuri has been developed, and the Shivrinarayan area is among those nine 'Ram Gaman tourist circuit' places which will be developed under this project." Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel will inaugurate all the works done under the 'Ram Van Gaman Tourism Circuit' project's first phase on the event of Ram Navmi-- the birthday of Lord Rama, he said.

Das said Chhattisgarh CM has organised a first-ever state-level Ramayana mela in which participants of various districts are taking participation in a Ramayana recital competition. "The winners will be awarded by CM. The first winner will be provided Rs 5 lakh, the second Rs 3 lakh and the third Rs 2 lakh as a reward."

Giving details about Shivrinarayan temple, Das said the temple is "one of oldest religious places and historians mention that it was constructed anytime in the 8th century". "This is one the tallest temple among all other temples constructed in Chhattisgarh so far. The carvings done on the stones of this temple seem to have been done on wood. The speciality of this temple is that Lord Shivrinarayan is seated here."

This town is named as Shivrinarayan in the name of this temple, said Das, adding, "all schools and colleges being opened here are named in the name of Lord Shivrinarayan". Chhattisgarh CM and his cabinet have done the work of expanding the pride of the state not only in India but on the world stage, Das mentioned

Asked about the benefit to the tourism sector due to 'Ram Van Gaman tourism circuit' project, Das said, "The tourists of foreign countries will come here and they will get a chance to see the places of Lord Shivrinarayan. The tourists will also get acquainted with the culture and rituals of Shivrinarayan." "Chhattisgarh CM's vision is to increase the income of people residing in Shivrinarayan and other places in Chhattisgarh by attracting tourism through renovation and development work on 'Ram Van Gaman tourism circuit'," said Das.

"Shivrinarayan is already accounted in one of the business regions but the development work being done in the region will certainly lead to an increase in income and source of business, and people will get benefits," he added. Shivrinarayan, a land of mythology and spirituality, lies on the banks of Mahanadi in Janjgir Champa district, around 130 kilometres from Raipur. This is the place where Shabari, a character in Ramayana, is believed to have offered Lord Rama the berries that she tasted first to ensure he got only the sweetest ones.

The inauguration of the first phase of works at nine places of the 'Ram Van Gaman tourism circuit' project is significant in terms of attracting more tourism to the state. (ANI)
