The 2023-built Oceania Vista cruise ship is the first of two "ALLURA Class" 1200-passenger ships similar to the sisterships Marina and Riviera but with some key design changes related to outdoor spaces and passenger accommodations.

The newbuild Vista is the Oceania fleet 's 7th member. It was constructed by the Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri in Genoa Italy (at Sestri Ponente Yard) and scheduled for inauguration in 2023 May. The sistership Allura will be launched in 2025.

Like all fleetmates, the vessel (IMO number 9876957) is currently Marshall Islands /France- flagged (MMSI 538009952) and registered in Majuro .

History - construction and ownership

Oceania Cruises is a US passenger shipping company and luxury travel brand owned by NCLH-Norwegian (shipowner), Between April 2007 and September 2014, the company (as part of "Prestige Cruise Holdings") was owned by Apollo Management LP - one of the world's largest private investment equity funds. Since September 2014, Oceania and the sister company RSSC-Regent are owned by NCLH - acquired at a total cost of USD 3 billion.

Oceania ships offer luxury cruises with relatively shorter itineraries, as well as Around The World voyages up to 180 days in length.

Decks and Cabins

Oceania Vista staterooms (613 total in 16 grades) include 149 Suites, 444 Balcony cabins (of which 6x Solo/Studios), and 20 French Balcony. Most cabins are sized 245 ft2 / 23 m2. The largest passenger accommodations are the aft-facing Owners Suites (1335 ft2 / 124 m2 plus 665 ft2 / 62 m2 wraparound terrace).

Unlike the other fleetmates, Oceania's ship Vista has no Oceanview (cabins with non-opening windows) and Interior cabins (without windows).

The boat has 15 decks , of which 11 are passenger-accessible and 6 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Oceania Cruises Vista ship offers 12 total dining options (4 of which are fleet-firsts) and has four reservations-only / specialty restaurants, plus a Lido Buffet restaurant and casual food bars. Specialty restaurants come with no additional charge but require reservations for dinner.

The Ember Restaurant, as design, resembles a French bistro and focuses on traditional French cuisine specialties. At the Ember is hosted the exclusive 2-hour "Cellar’s Wine Luncheon" (food and wine pairing) served by the ship's Head Sommelier and his team.

The other restaurants are Polo Grill (steakhouse), Toscana (Mediterranean), Red Ginger (Asian), and Grand Dining Room.

The Grand Dining Room (2-decks high MDR) offers an expanded menu (with new items from Chef Jacques Pepin), daily-changing appetizers, soups, salads, entrees.

Red Ginger is a pan-Asian specialty restaurant with a 5-course "tasting" and a-la-carte priced menus. Menu items include Spicy Roast Duck, Beef Rendang, Thai Sweet Potato Curry.

Ember (124-seat complimentary dinner restaurant, reservations-only, offers French food by chef Pepin)

Grand Dining Room (340-seat complimentary restaurant for open-seating Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, offers French-inspired dishes, menus are changed daily)

Waves Grill is a casual fast-food bar serving the Pool Deck with made-to-order daily specialties and gourmet gelato/fresh-made ice cream. On offer are burgers with sides of fresh-made salads, coleslaw, hand-cut fries.

Terrace Cafe & Bar is a complimentary, casual buffet restaurant open for Breakfast-Lunch-Dinner (daily changing menus), with both indoor and outdoor sitting. Terrace Bar also doubles as a small Pizzeria. In the evenings, Terrace Cafe transforms into "Tapas On The Terrace" restaurant serving traditional Mediterranean food.

Culinary Center facilitates cooking classes and demos, and also hosts "Gourmet Explorer Series" which consists of 20 new cooking classes. The "La Technique" is an exclusive cooking class focusing on Jaques Pepin's techniques. The Culinary Center Dining Room is a VIP restaurant bookable for private dinners or exclusive food-and-wine pairing.

Aquamar Kitchen (24-seats) is a wine bar at surcharge, offering wine tastings and a 7-course dinner menu.

Toscana (96-seats) is a complimentary Italian restaurant (dinner-only, reservations-only), complimentary offering traditional Italian food. The menu includes items like Octopus/Truffle Carpaccio with Champagne Vinaigrette, Artichoke-Parmesan Timbale with Black Truffle Sauce, Homemade Gnocchi with Pesto, Lobster Risotto, Pan-Fried Sea Bass. Oceania Vista's godmother (chef Giada De Laurentiis) created two signature dishes served only in the Vista ship's restaurants Toscana and Grand Dining Room.

Polo Grill (98-seats) is a complimentary Steakhouse restaurant but reservations are required. All beef-based dishes are with 28-day dry-aged (USDA-certified) Black Angus Prime Beef. The menu also includes premium seafood (like Grilled Swordfish and Maine Lobster Au Gratin).

"Privee" is a small-capacity (10-seats) private dining room available for booking at USD 1000 (for the entire room). The gourmet dishes are part of Oceania's Chef's Table experience, with a 7-course dinner menu.

"The Bakery at Baristas" is a specialty coffee bar and a patisserie serving freshly baked pastries.

In October 2015, Oceania Cruises announced a plan to combine the "Toscana" and "Polo" restaurants into the new "Tuscan Steak" (steakhouse and seafood restaurant). The new venue's design is marked by quality wood paneling decorated with platinum and silver. Its dinner menu includes items like "Bistecca Alla Fiorentina", "Maine Lobster & Shrimp Fra Diavol", "Tuscan Porterhouse Steak", Oceania's signature pork chops "Iberico de Bellota". At the entrance, there is a wine cellar with a selection of fine wines.

  • The Grand Staircase is a signature feature of the Atrium's Lobby level marked by a floor-ceiling wire art pillar of crystals.
  • Martinis Bar is also redesigned, with plenty of comfortable seating (2-seat couches and armchairs), custom-designed sculptural lighting casts, a grand piano (for live performances in the evenings).
  • The Grand Lounge features plenty of cozy alcoves (furnished with angled sectional sofas and armchairs), a gold-infused color palette, custom-designed sculptural lighting, contemporary artworks.
  • Horizons (observation lounge & bar) is designed with wraparound floor-ceiling windows, a central circular bar (with high chairs), plenty of seating (mainly 4-seat round tables with armchairs) and provides white-glove Afternoon Tea service and live musical performances.
  • Pool Deck features a rectangular swimming pool flanked by two large Jacuzzis (outdoor whirlpool hot tubs) and is surrounded by a sunbathing space with padded loungers and small tables. The pool's sundeck area is on two decks - the lower level has the pool and sun loungers, while the upper level also has umbrella-covered outdoor wicker furniture (daybeds and deckchairs).

New dining options (9) are exclusive to the Oceania Cruises' ALLURA ships (Vista and Allura). Details on the new culinary experiences, as well as on the boat's public spaces and staterooms are to be gradually revealed in the coming months.

Ember Restaurant offers American cuisine specialties for lunch and dinner, with menu items like Braised Short Beef Ribs with Creamy Parmezan Polenta, Grilled Swordfish Steak with Seasoned Asparagus, Thai Crab Cakes with Aioli Sauce, Smoked Chicken Cobb Salad with Avocado Dressing, among others

Aquamar Kitchen offers more wellness-themed (organic) food, with healthy- and vegetarian menu items. For Breakfast are offered raw/cold-pressed smoothies and fresh juices, homemade healthy granolas, avocado toasts, veggie power bowls, breakfast burritos/wraps. For Lunch are offered Slow-Roasted Salmon with Quinoa-Tabbouleh-Tahini Sauce, Grilled Yellowfin Tacos with Cabbage Slaw, Fried Chicken Sandwiches (on fresh-baked whole grain buns).

Such as her sister ships Marina and Riviera, Oceania ship Vista sports some of cruising's most palatial rooms, featuring furnishings from Ralph Lauren Home and layouts by Dakota Jackson of New York and S.B. The ship's Theater (Vista Lounge) hosts 4 main show productions developed by a professional team of producers, technicians, and performers to bring Oceania's onboard entertainment to the highest level. The first three productions (announced in March 2023) are titled "Into the Night", "Headliners", "The Anchor Inn", and "The Music Triangle".

  • Into the Night (choreographed by Britt Benae Stewart who is an American professional dancer and choreographer on the dance competition TV series "Dancing with the Stars") is a dance-themed production mixing dancing with styling and American Idol-like entertainment.
  • Headliners is a VIP concert showcasing a resident cast/crew (vocalists and instrumentalists) performing some of the world's most popular songs from the repertoires of music icons like Bee Gees, Cher, Celine Dion, Adele.
  • The Anchor Inn is a UK-themed song-and-dance production set in the "Anchor Inn Pub" where a group of professional musicians celebrates the British music's "good times" by recreating some of Britain's greatest hits by celebrities like Shirley Bassey, Tom Jones, Rod Stewart, Dusty Springfield, Madness.
  • The Music Triangle show is themed on the history of music.

Positioned midship on Deck 14, the Sun Deck is served by the Polo Bar and is fitted with padded loungers and deckchairs, 4-seat tables, showers.

Forward on Deck 15 is the Aquamar SPA Center. The ship's wellness complex consists of Spa Terrace, Spa Whirlpool, Steam Rooms, Treatment Rooms, Styling Salon, Spa Club, Fitness/Gym, and Boardroom (card playing and board games). Spa Club treatments include Acupuncture, Ayurveda, Healing Energy, Body Wraps and Scrubs, Skin Care, Tanning, Massages and Exotic Treatments.

Aft on Deck 15 is the Fitness Track (Power Walking/Jogging Track) and two deck game zones - Shuffleboard (starboard) and Croquet/Bocce (portside).

Forward on Deck 16 are two sports facilities - Paddle Tennis Court and the adjacent 9-hole Golf Putting Green (Mini-Golf Course with golf driving nets), along with a teak sundeck area with padded loungers and low tables.

Itineraries

Oceania Vista itinerary program was officially announced on September 9, 2021, and sales/bookings opened on September 16th.

Oceania Vista's Maiden Voyage is currently scheduled for May 13, 2023 (rescheduled from April 14th). The 7-day "Founder's Cruise" (itinerary May 13-20, from Civitavecchia-Rome to Venice ) will be hosted by Frank J. Del Rio (NCLH-Norwegian's President and CEO) and will also commemorate Oceania brand's 20th anniversary.

The boat's inaugural cruise season starts with Mediterranean itineraries. On January 8, 2019, the shipowner NCLH (Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd) announced a shipbuilding order with Fincantieri for two units planned for Oceania Cruises . Both vessels are of the new Allura-Class - the next stage of the fleet expansion project OceaniaNEXT. The new boats are designed and built by Fincantieri, with scheduled deliveries in 2023 (Vista) and 2025 ( Allura ).

The 67000 GT-ton ALLURA-Class ships have capacity 1200 passengers plus 800 staff-crew. These are new class mid-sized cruise vessels similar in design and amenities to Oceania's 2011-2012 newbuilds Riviera and Marina . The contract price for each of the newbuilds is ~EUR 575 million (per unit). NCLH obtained export credit financing with favorable terms to fund 80% of the total contract price, subject to certain Italian government approvals. As of 2019, NCLH had 10 cruise ships on order and planned for deliveries through 2027. Of those, 7 units were for NCL-Norwegian , 2 for Oceania , 1 for RSSC-Regent .

MS Vista was launched/floated out from drydock at Fincantieri's Sestri Ponente shipyard ( Genoa ) on February 25, 2022. The special event was led by godmother/madrina Anna Trucco (shipyard employee) and attended by Giuseppe Torrente (Shipyard Director) and His Excellency Monsignor Tasca (Genoa's Archbishop).

On February 27, 2023, Oceania announced that Vista ship's godmother will be Giada Pamela De Laurentiis (1970-born Italian-American chef, restaurateur, TV personality). Giada De Laurentiis was the host of Food Network's culinary TV show "Giada at Home" (215 episodes/30-min each aired in the period 2008-2015). She owns two restaurants in Las Vegas (Nevada) - Giada (2014-opened, in The Cromwell Las Vegas Hotel & Casino) and Pronto by Giada (2018-opened, in Caesars Palace Hotel & Casino).

For the ship's outfitting, Fincantieri contracted LTH-Baas AS (1934-founded, Tallinn Estonia -based company) which is a marine turnkey provider of integrated services for both passenger and merchant ships. During Oceania Vista's construction, LTH-Baas completed 500+ different works, including the installation and testing of pipelines, exhaust systems (gas boilers, steam, condensate), evaporator and osmosis systems, freshwater cooling system, potable water tanks and storage/distribution systems, water filling system of the swimming pools, fire system, open deck washing, fire extinguishing system, air controls, heat recovery, as well as final outfitting of the passenger staterooms.

Oceania Vista vessel (hull/Sestri Ponente yard number 6308) was officially delivered on May 1st (2023). The christening ceremony (on May 8th) was held in Valletta Harbour, Malta . The event was led by the godmother and attended by Frank A. Del Rio (Oceania's President) and his son Frank Del Rio Jr (Oceania's Chief Sales & Marketing Officer) while Harry Connick Jr (1967-born American jazz singer, pianist, actor, TV host) performed in a 1-hour concert on the ship.

The naming ceremony was the highlight of the "VIP Christening Voyage" - a 7-day roundtrip itinerary from Civitavecchia-Rome visiting Naples .

In April 2023, Oceania signed with the 2014-established premium brand "Chapter 7 Whisky" a deal to create an exclusive 20-year aged Chapter 7 special cask whisky (batch of a total of 304 bottles) to celebrate its 20th anniversary as well as the launch of the Vista ship. The exclusive bottles are available for onboard purchase (via Harding+/part of Harding Retail UK) only during Oceania Vista's inaugural season (2023).

World Cruise 2026

On March 13, 2024, Oceania opened for booking Vista's first Around The World Voyage .

The 180-day roundtrip itinerary departs from PortMiami (Florida USA) on January 6th (2026), traverses 3 oceans and 18 seas, and groups a total of 101 ports/destinations (in 43 different countries), 11 overnight port stays, 82 UNESCO sites.

In addition to the World Voyage 2026, Oceania Vista introduced "Global Wanderlust" (120-day itinerary from San Diego  to Miami) and "World Odyssey" (197-day itinerary from  Los Angeles  to Miami).

Signature regions along the westbound route include Southeast Asia, Australia/New Zealand/South Pacific Islands, Europe, and South America.

180-day world cruise prices started at US$59700 per person (French Veranda Stateroom with double occupancy), inclusive of first-class roundtrip airfare, land transfers, bonus/complimentary amenities (laundry services, visa package, Internet access, crew gratuities, luggage delivery, shore excursion credit, beverage package during lunches and dinners).

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

Oceania has long prided itself on being a culinary- and destination-focused cruise line, and Vista upholds that reputation. While the newest ship is still geared toward the line’s core demographic—travelers 55 and up—the flexible dining options, health-conscious menus, inventive bars, and well-balanced itineraries are likely to appeal to a slightly younger audience, too.

Tell us about the ship in general.

Oceania’s first new ship in over a decade set sail in spring 2023, and can hold 1,200 passengers. It marks the start of the line’s new Allura Class, and boasts all-veranda cabins (a first for Oceania), a staff-to-guest ratio of 2:3, three new culinary venues, and stronger Wi-Fi, thanks to the adoption of SpaceX’s Starlink technology.

Who is onboard?

During the christening sailing, passengers consisted of journalists from around the world, travel agents, longtime fans of the brand, and friends and family, with nearly every decade accounted for. Typically, Oceania guests tend to be 55-plus, with a mix of couples, solo travelers, and families with adult children looking for a food and beverage-focused experience, and a mix of well-known and off-the-beaten-path ports of call. While children are allowed onboard, there is no kids’ programming.

Describe the cabins.

I stayed in a Concierge Level Veranda Stateroom, which had more than enough elbow room for two guests, thanks to the seating area—there’s a small couch and a chair in front of the dresser and mirror—and balcony. Decorated with cool gray tones, marble and leather accents, and crisp white bedding, the rooms feel upscale but not ostentatious. We were particularly delighted by the large bathroom, especially the shower, and the seemingly endless storage space throughout the cabin; little things like the USB chargers on either side of the bed were appreciated as well.

New to the ship are Concierge Level Solo Veranda Staterooms, offering solo travelers a spacious room in which to rest their head (though that shower size definitely leaves something to be desired), a generous balcony, and access to an airport-like lounge on their floor with snacks and beverages. Guests in Concierge Level cabins also get perks like priority embarkation, a welcome bottle of Champagne, and free laundry service (up to three bags).

On the other end of the spectrum, the Oceania Suite is like a luxury apartment at sea, with a dining table, wet bar, massive balcony, and two bathrooms, one with a standalone bathtub. The Vista and Owner’s Suite are even more elaborate.

Tell us about the crew.

The crew was kind and welcoming, though not overly attentive. Our cabin steward introduced himself on the first day and was a friendly face throughout the week. As the ship is on the smaller side, you can expect to recognize crew members quickly (some may pop up in more than one dining venue). The hero of our sailing was Pablo at the shore excursions desk, who was incredibly patient and helpful when we showed up on day one without a clue what we wanted to do, and a long line behind us.

What food and drink options are available on board?

Of the ship's 11 culinary spaces, three are new: Aquamar Kitchen, where you can offset richer meals with poké bowls, smoothies, or avocado toast; the Bakery at Baristas, serving freshly baked pastries, finger sandwiches, and an impressive breakfast assortment (so much smoked salmon!); and a new signature restaurant, Ember, which was designed to mimic New American restaurants in northern California. It has a cozy feel and is meant to be a slightly quicker dining experience, with family-style sides and hearty entrees (lobster mac and cheese, porcini-dusted bone-in ribeyes).

Returning guests will be happy to see Oceania staples like Toscana, an Italian restaurant where a cart filled with a dozen or so oil and vinegar bottles gets rolled over to you with your bread, and Red Ginger, a pan-Asian restaurant featuring dishes with Thai, Korean, Japanese, and Malaysian influence (the watermelon duck salad came highly recommended, and was in fact delicious). It’s worth nothing that none of these specialty restaurants come with an upcharge.

While not new, Vista ’s Waves Grill stays open for dinner as a pizza joint, and is a great place to dine on days when you come back to the ship late or are eager for a casual dining experience—the pizza was fantastic, and there are at least three different burrata appetizers to choose from, along with a great selection of wine.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

The Aquamar Spa and Vitality Center is one of the most beautiful spaces on the ship. Don’t skip a visit to the terrace, where you can relax on plush lounge chairs (including heated ones) in between dips into the plunge pool or hot tub. While the main pool is by no means a party scene, this space is markedly more serene, thanks to its tucked-away location at the back of the ship. As for the treatments, standard fare is offered: massages, facials, hair and nail services, salt scrubs.

Tell us about the activities and entertainment.

Pickleball devotees will be happy to know there is an outdoor court; golf putting greens, shuffleboard, and lawn games like cornhole line the top deck, too. The resort-like pool is a popular space to hang, and at night, guests can visit the casino, the adjacent Founder's Bar (where drinks come smoking, scented, and otherwise made to be photographed), the theater, and the piano bar.

There’s tons of experiential programming on offer as well. Head to the Artists’ Loft to take a class with the talented artists-in-residence, or visit the expanded Culinary Center for cooking demos and classes developed by executive chef Kathryn Kelly.

How was the experience for families?

This isn’t the line to choose if you’re looking for a kids’ club, wave pools, or Go-Karts (Oceania’s sister brand, Norwegian Cruise Line, is better suited for that). Guests under 18 (and over six months) are allowed, but must stay in the same stateroom as an adult, and can’t participate on shore excursions or land tours without an accompanying adult.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

The christening cruise sailed from Rome to Rome, with stops in Naples; Valletta, Malta; and Ajaccio, France in between. ( Vista will spend most of 2023 in Western Europe, then move to North America and the Caribbean.) We had an overnight in Valletta, something Oceania is working to do more of, along with offering more late-night stays for single-day ports, so that guests can spend more time on land. Their itineraries do a good job of mixing well-known cities with smaller, lesser-known ports, and the shore excursions include both highlights tours of historical sites and landmarks and programs geared toward returning visitors; we heard great things about the pizza crawl in Naples.

Anything we missed?

Oceania offers a great middle ground in terms of experience and offerings—both grand and cozy, with a wider range of fare options than luxury lines, since it’s not all-inclusive. Go for excellent food and beverage, unique ports, good service, and a comfortable space you’ll be happy to come back to at the end of busy days on land.

Oceania Cruises is spreading out its largest tablecloth ever with the arrival of Oceania Vista, its first new ship in more than a decade set to spend the winter sailing season brining its culinary offerings on cruises out of Miami.

The 67,700-gross-ton, 1,200-guest ship that features 11 dining venues is the largest in the now seven-ship Oceania Cruises fleet, but only slightly over the line’s last two ships Marina and Riviera. A sister ship to Vista named Allura is due in 2025.

Oceania is the upper premium sister line to Norwegian Cruise Line and has looked to carve out a unique space focusing on both on-board offerings and destination excursions that cater to the gourmand while not growing too large for its target demographic.

“We really felt there was a huge space in between the premium brands who are actually moving more of mass market because they were building bigger ships — Celebrity, Holland America, Princess,” said cruise line President Frank A. Del Rio. “They left their old premium formats and started going more contemporary so we kind of snuck in between.”

Vista builds on the line’s prowess, once again relying on menus from famed French chef Jacques Pépin, who has been the line’s executive culinary director for two decades, but guests might be surprised to not find his signature restaurant Jacques on board in favor of a new concept called Ember.

“Jacques is not really out in a way because we are cautious of what we have done by introducing Ember,” said Oceania Cruises’ Senior Culinary Director Alexis Quaretti. Instead, his French dishes can be found in the main dining room with a different appetizer, entrée and dessert every day, enough for a 14-day sailing.

That opened up the space to create Ember, which is built to resemble the tasting room of a Napa Valley vineyard serving American farm-to-table fare including dishes conceived by Pépin.

“So, yes, it is a different atmosphere but definitely I love very much Ember, with its nice design, the wood effect, and at least we can still have some of the Jacques Pépin dishes on a daily basis in the main dining room,” Quaretti said.

Ember’s menu includes things like blackened crab cakes with corn salsa and tomato sauce; roasted beetroot salad with goat cheese, shallots, green beans and hazelnuts; porcini-dusted bone-in ribeye with foie gras-truffle demi-glace and breadcrumb-crusted tomato Provençale; and roasted apple tart with served with San Francisco favorite Humphry Slocombe-brand sweet summer corn ice cream.

Also lending her celebrity name to the ship is godmother Giada De Laurentiis, who has for now two signature dishes in the ship’s Italian offering Toscana as well as in the Grand Dining Room including her specialty of lemon spaghetti with jumbo shrimp.

Another new venue to Vista is the Aquamar Kitchen, a healthy concept that combines a family-style table setting that spills over into al fresco outdoor seating.

While it has make-your-own poke bowls and four kinds of avocado toast, there is plenty of indulgence to found within the menu as well such as the butternut squash soup, yellowfin tuna tacos with guacamole, crunchy chicken sandwich with chipotle mayo and the buffalo mozzarella tomato basil panini. Plus it has fresh juices and smoothies such as the spicy sweet “Pure Immunity,” which is OJ, ginger, turmeric and cayenne pepper.

The venue is packed during sailings as it offers a variety of options that set it apart from other lunch fare on board.

Another packed venue is the Baristas coffee bar now with its own bakery that serves up sweet and savory pastries throughout the day.

For those who enjoy learning the art of cooking, the ship offers the largest ever version of The Culinary Center, now with 24 individual cooking stations. For an extra cost, those on board can partake from dozens of new options pulling from a fleetwide library of more than 100 classes designed by the line’s culinary enrichment director and executive chef Kathryn Kelly.

Kelly introduced the kitchen on Oceania’s Marina, and it has since been on board Riviera and the new ships of sister cruise line Regent Seven Seas.

“It’s been an absolute joy ride to develop a program that guests come in — some of them are very talented home chefs, others have never picked up a knife — and have them tell our chefs that it was the experience of a lifetime.”

She says the classes have evolved just as those who have sailed.

“Ten to 15 years ago, when we were teaching cooking classes, we would get on a map and say, ‘Can I show you where you are? Do you even know what country you’re in? ‘ And now it’s not. It’s like, ‘There’s 17 cuisines in Italy. How are they different?’ So we’re seeing that kind of migration of sophistication in a lot of guests that is really rewarding for us as educators.”

Also key to Oceania’s footprint in the market are the unique culinary excursions offered at each of its ports of call, something Kelly and her team spend curating throughout the year.

Kelly said it’s designed to satisfy guests that are thinking, “‘I’ve been to Florence and I’ve checked all the boxes. Now what I want to do is something a little different.’ So they want to be able to go off and explore and maybe take that afternoon and find that special little restaurant somewhere. … I think that the trends that we’re seeing are a little bit more adventuresome, people are feeling a lot more comfortable about sort of street food or more authentic indigenous kinds of foods.”

The ship stands apart from its predecessors with the majority of the interior spaces created by Miami-based Studio DADO, which also had a hand in the new Prima class of ships for Norwegian and spaces on board Regent Seven Seas ships as well.

“What we have to really do is sort of look at trends beyond our design world,” said Studio DADO founding partner Greg Walton “One of the things we look at and we nickname it — we call we’re future casting. We look at all kinds of design, from fashion to automobile design, what’s happening in every kind of industry that involves design, even looking at things like small household appliances.”

The ship’s dining venues in particular each feature a design story to be discovered. The Polo Club steakhouse, for instance, pulls on the history of polo, and how it originated in Persia, and thus a tiled entryway that resembled a Persian rug gives way to the more traditional English stylings within. It even pulls color schemes that pay deference to Wellington, Florida, the polo capital of the South.

Ember, though, is among Walton’s favorite new space, including the faux flame created by a mix of light and mist that provides atmosphere to what feels like a California vineyard.

“The big accomplishment in this space is the fireplace, because there’s no such thing as an open flame on a ship, not even in the galleys,” he said. “At night when you come in here, there’s people who walk up” and place their hand near the flame. He said even the scent of wooden logs under the fireplace lends itself to the sensory experience.

The line often sails to a variety of destinations skipped over by major cruise lines, often built around culinary adventures.

The Miami-based will visit ports including San Juan, Puerto Rico; Gustavia, St. Barts; Roseau, Dominica; Bridgetown, Barbados; St. George’s, Grenada; Castries, St. Lucia; St. John’s, Antigua; Fort-de-France, Martinique in the Eastern Caribbean and Costa Maya, Mexico; Roatan, Honduras; Colon, Panama; Santo Tomas, Guatemala; Puerto Limon, Costa Rica and Belize City, Belize in the Western Caribbean.

The ship begins its winter run Nov. 19 and runs through the end of March.

​​I woke up to gray skies as Oceania Vista pulled into the port of Naples, Italy. Determined to reverse my weather luck, I went to deck 12 for a Morning Sunrise smoothie at Aquamar Kitchen. It worked. Some combination of the restaurant’s white-tile backsplash and baby-blue accents and the tropical smoothie brightened my mood. Heartened, my husband and I decided to brave the rain and set out in search of life-changing pizza. 

Last week, I was one of 1,200 passengers on Oceania Cruises’ first new ship in 11 years. With the debut of Vista , the brand, owned by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings, rolled out its new Allura class of ship. It’s the first Oceania vessel where every room has a balcony, and it launched with Starlink (yes, the Elon Musk Wi-Fi), which was strong enough for me to take a Zoom call in the middle of the Tyrrhenian Sea with my camera on. Of Vista ’s 11 bars and restaurants, three are entirely new to Oceania — including a high-end cocktail counter that’s giving Death & Co. at sea, and the health-focused Aquamar with made-to-order salads, protein-dominant lunch bowls, and pressed juices.

There are, however, venues that faithful Oceania cruisers will recognize, like steak house Polo Grill and Italian restaurant Toscana, also on the Oceania-class ships, Riviera and Marina , and the older Regatta-class vessels. I was particularly excited to eat at Toscana, not only because I’d heard about the olive oil cart, but because Giada De Laurentiis — the ship’s godmother who sailed with us and christened Vista in a portside ceremony in Valletta, Malta — supplied two recipes for the menu. As someone who watched a lot of Everyday Italian in the early aughts, I felt strongly about trying her signature Capri-inspired lemon spaghetti. The lemon-cream sauce with grilled shrimp and capers delivered . It was easily the most talked-about dish on board, with the exception of the duck-and-watermelon salad at pan-Asian restaurant Red Ginger.

I hit the jackpot – which, on Vista , isn’t winning big at the deck-six casino, it’s scoring a Red Ginger reservation — about halfway through our cruise, as we sailed from Malta to Naples. From our corner table, my husband and I took in the glass-and-gold light fixtures and the geometric black aluminum dividers that created cozy seating nooks near the windows. We dug into tuna and salmon sashimi, pork-and-vermicelli spring rolls, and — of course — the famed duck-and-watermelon salad (which lived up to the hype), all paired with a Sonoma chardonnay. The showstopper, though, was the medium-rare bulgogi rib-eye plated on chic, blue-rimmed Tokyo Design Studio ceramic. We capped our night at Martinis — bet you can guess what that bar serves — where a pianist plays every night and the well of Elton John covers and The Botanist gin seemingly never runs dry.

Most nights, though, Founders Bar was the spot. New to Oceania, its most ambitious bar aboard has a menu of 26 intricate cocktails that use house-made syrups and top-shelf booze like Whistle Pig and parsley-infused Grey Goose. Of those cocktails, we tried nine (a decent showing, but not our best), and kept coming back to the Not So Sure, a potent take on an old fashioned made with Earl Grey tea–infused Woodford Reserve bourbon.

We marveled over the mixology — smoke, bubbles, and botanical spritzes were all part of the show — with other industry insiders, including Oceania executives and travel advisors who’d joined the preview sailing. Still, the onboard demographic was typical for Oceania, which tends to attract travelers in their 60s. That’s where the stories are. We dined with one couple, in their mid-80s, who have done two month-long stints on Oceania ships. They spent our meal at Ember, Vista ’s new American restaurant, telling us about the preparations that go into cruising the east coast of Africa to safeguard against Somali pirate attacks. Another gentleman, who grew up visiting Malta, sent us to the Valletta pub where actor Oliver Reed spent his time while shooting “Gladiator.” (Apparently, one night, Reed challenged British sailors to a drinking contest — and died in that very bar. At the unassuming pub on a Valletta side street, you can buy a shirt with Reed’s final, unpaid bar tab: eight pints; 12 double rums; 14 whiskeys. We opted for a slightly more restrained order.)

That said, the ship really is putting in the work when it comes to appealing to millennials. There’s the excellent Wi-Fi; pickleball ( America’s fastest growing sport , by the way, with NPR reporting “the strongest growth among players under 55”); a very Sweetgreen-like salad counter at Aquamar; and a coffee shop that looks like one in walking distance of my home in L.A. (marble counters, gold accents, leather bar stools) and pulls an espresso shot of similar quality. 

Meanwhile, Oceania has vastly expanded the number of tours and excursions available, something that should also appeal to a younger crowd. “These aren’t the run-of-the-mill shore excursions that everyone is used to on cruises,” promises Frank Del Rio, Jr., the new president of Oceania Cruises, in an interview with Travel + Leisure . All in, the company has developed more than 100 of these new, smaller-group choices, which leverage the expertise of locals and unlock under-the-radar activities, as T+L   contributing editor Sarah Greaves-Gabbadon recently reported . These “Go Local” tours brought Greaves-Gabbadon to locals’ homes in little-known destinations, like the “Croatian hamlet of Škopljanci (population: nine), where a local farmer welcomed me with homemade cherry schnapps.” 

Eager to find my own version of a nine-person town with cherry schnapps, I opted for a spin around Corsica that promised a visit to the mountains of Vizzavona and “Corsican snacks.” We took an astounding drive from the western port city of Ajaccio to Hôtel-Restaurant Monte d'Oro in the center of the island. I found our guide easy to tune out (she was, indeed, a local, but her monologue felt more suited to an old-school cruise tour of 50 people, rather than a group of 20 snack enthusiasts). But I loved watching the landscape transform from beach and sparkling sea to Alps-rivaling mountain views as our bus climbed 3,815 feet to Vizzavona. Waiting for us inside the hotel, the oldest on Corsica, dating back to 1880, was an impressive charcuterie spread, served under vines weeping down from wood-paneled ceilings. After lunch, I chatted with a server about the biodynamic red wine they were pouring and cozied up in the hotel’s sitting room, where I pulled a Molière biography from a paperback-cluttered shelf and read quietly aloud to my husband. I assume he loved it.

I did absolutely no research on Corsica  – beyond reading the excursion pamphlet on my flight from Paris to Rome, and skimming Napoleon's Wikipedia page. And yet, I still wound up on a stunning stretch of the island I would have never known about. I didn’t have to worry about how to get there. All I had to worry about was how long I had before my husband’s patience ran out on my very slow French-to-English translation of Molière’s life.

Other culinary adventures are a key part of Oceania’s effort to appeal to all age ranges. On Vista, there are 17 new culinary tours on top of an already robust lineup of cooking classes. Executive chef Kathryn Kelly says, in various ports, foodies will head to the market (like the main open-air agorá on Corfu, Greece ), with shopping assignments and euros from Vista chefs. Then, they’ll come back on board for a class at the ship’s culinary center, which is three times larger than the ones on older ships.

After a morning of shopping and an afternoon of Corsican charcuterie, I returned to my cabin and posted up on my balcony to watch as we pulled away from Ajaccio. My concierge-level stateroom, at 270 square feet, had a sizable balcony, a queen-size bed, and a double shower. (I spoke to several experienced Oceania cruisers who were beyond excited about the increased size of the showers.) Though the rooms are about the same square footage as those on other Oceania ships, the Vista designs make smarter use of the floor plan, said Greg Walton, CEO of Studio Dado, the firm that designed most of the ship. To take one example, closets were moved from next to the bed to a spot closer to the door, which freed up room to expand those showers, Walton explained in a conversation with T+L.

The new Allura-class Vista has more suites than others in the Oceania fleet, too: there are 14 Oceania Suites (up to 1,200 square feet); eight Vista Suites (up to 1,850 square feet); and three Owner’s Suites with Ralph Lauren Home decor, two massive terraces, and 2,400 square feet of space. 

As we sailed away from Corsica, I went up to the main pool area, which Walton said is “designed to feel like a resort” with cabanas and light wood–colored accents, ordered a barrel-aged Negroni, and took it with me to the whirlpool. After my soak, I watched the sunset from Polo Grill, over martinis and filet mignon, and then went back to Founders Bar, to continue my absolutely crucial cocktail-sampling mission. 

After seven days on Vista — the longest I’ve ever spent on a ship — I was surprised by how much I wanted to stay on board. I wasn’t ready to part with my new routine, from early Morning Sunrise smoothies to Not So Sure cocktails before bed. “Next year, 40 percent of our trips will be 30-plus days or longer,” Del Rio says. Dubbed Grand Voyages, those itineraries have been extremely popular among Oceania guests as they return to cruising. “We have the 180-day around-the-world cruise that we also sell in segments,” he adds.

Vista will sail in Europe this summer — a June itinerary, for example, goes from Athens to Istanbul in 10 days, from $5,089 per person , including food; select wine, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages; six shore excursions; and a $600 credit to use on board toward spa services or top-shelf drinks. The ship will come stateside in the fall, starting with an 11-day sail from New York to Montreal, then head to the Caribbean for the winter. A seven-day round-trip cruise from Miami, visiting Mexico, Belize, and Honduras, starts at $2,228 per person (or $318 a day for the trip, including food, non-alcoholic drinks and house wine, four excursions, and a $400 onboard credit).

Launched in 2012, Oceania Riviera is scheduled to complete a refubishment in December 2022. The upgrade will feature new furnishings, remodeled bathrooms, lighting and additional outlets and USB ports.  Oceania Riviera features larger staterooms than the line's older ships. The 1,250-passenger, 800-crew-member ship is identical to Oceania Marina and includes Inside, Ocean View and Veranda staterooms. The ship also offers suites that range from 420 to 2,000 square feet. Other pursuits available on the ship include treatments at the spa, painting at the Artist Loft and cooking classes at The Culinary Center. With amenities and organized events geared toward older cruisers, Riviera isn't a great choice for those traveling with children.

Riviera will split its time between the Middle East,  the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, Asia and more.

Oceania sailings range in price depending on such factors as cabin type, ship, destination and length of trip. Keep in mind that Oceania is an upscale brand that prides itself on gourmet cuisine and onboard service — and its rates tend to reflect that.

For those looking for a weeklong cruise in the Caribbean, a trip departing from Miami and stopping in Mexico, Belize and Honduras starts at $1,399 per person. If you’re interested in Europe, a 10-day trip from Rome to Barcelona starts at $2,470 per person. Both rates are based on double occupancy in an inside stateroom.

Those who want to make like Magellan can book the 180-day around-the-world cruise starting at $48,499. A shorter, but still luxurious, 72-day itinerary in Asia starts at $19,599. Suites will increase the cost of the cruise but add more space for you to relax in your cabin.

The cruise line has announced a new base fare package called “simply MORE,” which comes with a host of inclusions. These include round-trip flights, airport transfers, shore excursions and a beverage package for all guests in the cabin.

What is the best Oceania ship?

Oceania has eight ships in a range of sizes; the smallest accommodates just under 700 passengers, while the largest can hold up to 1,250. The cruise line has a low staff-to-passenger ratio, between 1.5 and 1.7 staff per passenger, which allows for more personalized service. Many of its ships have capacity for 684 passengers, which means they can feel less crowded than larger ships.

The best Oceania cruise ship is its newest one — Vista. Every room has a veranda, plus space for storage, rain showers in the bathrooms and upscale furnishings.

What is the newest Oceania ship?

The newest Oceania ships are the Vista, which set sail in 2023, and the Allura, which is scheduled to sail in 2025. Both of these are on the larger end of its fleet, with a capacity for 1,210 passengers.

Oceania Cruises loyalty program: Oceania Club

Oceania Club members earn credits on each cruise they take, with more points awarded for longer cruises. For example, a cruise that lasts up to 24 days earns one credit, cruises for 25-34 days receive two credits, and trips longer than 158 days get 15 credits.

Earning status can take a while unless your first cruise is lengthy. If you’re looking for elite status on a cruise line, Oceania isn't especially rewarding for people who cruise occasionally.

How to earn Oceania Club credits

Travelers earn credits based on the length of a sailing. Even a three-week cruise earns just one credit, which means it can take some time to reach the first elite tier — Bronze, which requires five credits. Even though they’re part of the same holding company, you won’t earn Oceania credits when sailing with Norwegian or Regent Seven Seas.

How to redeem points

There are no points to redeem with Oceania Club. The primary purpose of the program is earning credits to reach different elite status tiers. At each level, there are various benefits you receive when on a cruise.

The 3 types of Oceania Cruises ships, explained

Among upscale cruise lines, Oceania Cruises has one of the simplest fleets.

All six of the ships that the Miami-based line currently operates fall into one of just two groups, known as "classes" in cruise industry lingo: the Oceania class and the Regatta class.

Each of these two groups is made up of ships that were constructed around the same time to the same basic design. If you know one member of the group, you know them all.

Oceania also has two more vessels on order that will make up a new, third class of ships at the line. But the first of these vessels, which together will be known as the Allura class, doesn't arrive until next spring.

An introduction to Oceania Cruises ships

Oceania Cruises is an upscale line — that is, it offers a higher level of service and aims for a higher-end customer than mass-market brands such as Norwegian Cruise Line , which is owned by the same parent company. Like all upscale lines, it operates smaller, less crowded (and pricier) vessels than you'll find at the more mass-market brands.

At 66,084 tons, Oceania's two biggest ships currently in operation, Marina and Riviera, are less than half the size of the biggest Norwegian vessels and just a third the size of the biggest ships operated by Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises . They also hold far fewer passengers — just 1,250 apiece, assuming two people per cabin.

Unveiled about a decade ago, the two ships make up what is known as the Oceania class at Oceania, and — for a few months more, at least — they are the leading lights of the Oceania fleet.

The four other ships that Oceania currently has in operation (Nautica, Insignia, Regatta and Sirena) are significantly smaller and older than the Oceania-class ships, and they hold far fewer passengers. They make up what is known as the Regatta class at the line.

The relatively small sizes of all six ships as compared to mass-market vessels — and resulting intimacy — is part of what you're paying for when you sail with Oceania. The ships may not have all the gee-whiz deck-top attractions of megaships such as Royal Caribbean 's Wonder of the Seas . But they offer serenity at sea in a relatively uncrowded setting, with a higher crew-to-passenger ratio than you'll find on mass-market vessels, more high-end restaurants and more elegant accommodations.

The smaller size of the ships also allows them to call at lesser-visited ports around the world that the big ships can't access — one of the big allures of sailing with a smaller-ship line such as Oceania.

Come May 2023, Oceania will be unveiling the first vessel in the new Allura class of ships mentioned above, which will be just a tiny bit bigger than the Oceania-class ships.

The Allura-class ships aren't yet sailing, but when they do begin service, they will be the new stars of the Oceania fleet.

The first of the two ships, to be called Vista, is due to arrive in May 2023. It promises an elegance and refinement unlike anything that has been seen before at the line.

At 67,000 tons, the vessel will be a tad bigger than Oceania's last two ships, Marina and Riviera. But it'll carry fewer passengers (1,200 versus 1,250). That means its "space ratio" of space per passenger will be higher.

The space ratio of a ship is considered a measure of how upscale it is, with higher space ratios typically corresponding to more luxurious vessels.

As for decor and amenities, Oceania has promised an "evolution" of the intimate, residential-style interior venues for which its ships are known. Vista will retain such Oceania signatures as a Grand Staircase at its center and a Grand Lounge that serves as a central meeting point, as well as a martini bar, Aquamar Spa and a Horizons observation lounge.

The top deck of the ship will revolve around a tranquil pool area, and — as is the case with all Oceania ships — the ship's interior will have a full-blown casino with an accompanying bar.

Vista also will feature a larger variety of cabin sizes than earlier Oceania vessels, ranging from standard balcony cabins measuring 291 square feet (the largest standard balcony cabins in the industry, according to the line) to an array of suites that measure up to 2,400 square feet.

Among new cabin categories will be Oceania's first solo cabins — six in all. They'll measure a spacious 270 square feet and have their own balconies, something that is relatively rare for solo cabins on ocean ships.

In fact, every cabin on Vista will be a balcony cabin — a first for the line. Every cabin will have either a full balcony or a more limited French balcony. The ship will have no windowless "inside" cabins or balconyless "ocean-view" cabins.

The solo cabins, notably, also will be concierge-level cabins, which means they will come with access to a private, keycard-accessed concierge lounge and complimentary use of the ship's Spa Terrace.

In another upgrade as compared to Oceania's other ships, Vista will boast 12 different culinary options for passengers — four of which will be new concepts for the brand.

The newcomers include Ember, serving "inventive American" cuisine, and wellness-focused Aquamar Kitchen (think smoothies, organic "power bowls" and yellowfin tacos with white cabbage slaw). Also new will be the Culinary Center Dining Room, an ocean-view space offering food-and-wine pairing experiences that will tie to the ship's cooking classroom. A new Bakery at Barista outlet will serve fresh-baked pastries.

Signature Oceania eateries making a return include the Polo Grill steakhouse, Italian-serving Toscana and upscale Asian venue Red Ginger.

A second, as-yet-unnamed Allure-class vessel is due to debut in 2025.

The two Oceania-class ships are the current belles of the ball in the Oceania fleet (at least until the arrival of the Allura-class ships). They are newer and bigger than the four other Oceania vessels currently sailing, with bigger and more elegant cabins, and a wider array of high-end eateries.

You'll find the Oceania-class ships feel more spacious than the line's four other vessels, and they have an overall elegance that takes them to a higher level. That said, they also carry a lot more passengers than Oceania's other ships — 1,250 as compared to 684.

If you're the sort of person that prefers traveling in smaller groups, the line's smaller Regatta-class vessels might be a better fit.

Overall, the Oceania-class vessels have a residential feel, which is something they share with all Oceania ships. You can sit back with a book in a wing-back leather chair in the English-style libraries on the ships, or sip a martini while listening to a piano player in their elegant Horizons observation lounges. The main pool areas on the vessels are classy and relaxing, with teak decking and rows of plush chaise lounge chairs facing sparkling pools.

Each of the vessels has four superb specialty restaurants that are in keeping with Oceania's foodie focus — none of which comes with an extra fee. They are the Polo Grill steakhouse, Italian Toscana, Asian-fusion Red Ginger and French Jacques (the latter the creation of famed chef Jacques Pépin, a culinary adviser to the line).

In addition, each ship has a main Grand Dining Room that also has a Jacques Pépin tie-in; he created the venue's signature dishes. The restaurants serve up Continental cuisine with menus changing daily.

Also for foodies, Riviera and Marina each have a high-end cooking classroom where passengers can learn how to make dishes themed around an ingredient or the regional cuisine of your cruise destination. It's a feature you won't find on the line's smaller ships.

Among other enrichment offerings (a big part of the Oceania formula) on the ships are art classes taught by an Artist in Residence in a dedicated space called the Artist's Loft. In addition, each of the ships has a theater where guest speakers lecture regularly, often on topics related to the destinations the ships visit. The theaters also are the setting for evening performances by an ever-changing array of guest entertainers such as pianists, classical string quartets and vocalists.

A swanky spa, outdoor running track, golf putting green, pickleball court and even croquet and bocce courts round out the activities available on board.

Cabins on the vessels also have a residential feel and are much more spacious than the cabins you'll find on the line's smaller ships. Standard balcony cabins, for instance, measure a generous 291 square feet, which the line boasts makes them some of the largest at sea.

Unlike the soon-to-debut Allura-class ships, these vessels also have ocean-view cabins, which measure 240 square feet, and windowless "inside" cabins, which measure 174 square feet. They typically are priced lower than balcony cabins and can be a good entry-level option for passengers looking to save.

The ships also are loaded with bigger suites, some as big as 2,000 square feet, with elegant decor crafted by famed designer Dakota Jackson and furnishings from Ralph Lauren Home.

Regatta class

Ships in class: Nautica (2000), Sirena (1999), Regatta (1998), Insignia (1998).

Size: 30,277 tons.

The Regatta-class ships have long been at the core of the Oceania fleet, and they continue to be highly popular with Oceania fans. About half the size of the line's Oceania-class ships, the four vessels in the series offer a much more intimate atmosphere than the Oceania-class ships with fewer bars, restaurants and entertainment areas.

Like the Oceania-class ships, the Regatta-class vessels have a residential feel, with interiors that revolve around small central reception halls with grand staircases that lead to a single deck with bars, lounges, a casino and a main restaurant.

The main restaurant, the Grand Dining Room, is where passengers dine most nights. But each of the ships also has one of Oceania's signature Polo Grill steakhouses and a Toscana restaurant serving Italian cuisine — both located near the tops of the ships. That's just half the number of specialty restaurants that you'll find on the Oceania-class ships.

Each of the ships, at the top, also is home to a relaxing outdoor pool area, as well as an interior observation lounge called Horizons and a casual eatery called the Terrace Cafe. Each of the vessels also has a small spa with steam rooms, salon and fitness center, as well as a small library. Additional top-deck features include a small putting green area.

Cabins on Regatta-class ships are notably smaller than those you'll find on the line's newer ships, with balcony cabins measuring just 216 square feet. Despite regular updates, they also can feel a bit dated as compared to newer Oceania ships.

All four of the Regatta-class vessels are now more than 20 years old, and they are showing their age in some areas.

That said, they remain wonderful vessels on many levels — one being that their small size allows them to access ports around the world that bigger ships can't visit. This allows them to sail more-interesting itineraries, in many cases, than you'll find on bigger ships.

Along those lines, Oceania often deploys the Regatta-class ships on its more far-flung, destination-rich itineraries, including some of the cruise industry's longest around-the-world cruises.

For the coming year, for instance, Insignia is scheduled to sail a 200-day world cruise out of San Francisco (starting on Jan. 15) that will bring stops on five continents including Antarctica.

In general, the Regatta-class ships appeal to cruisers who care more about the destinations they will be visiting than about having a lot of onboard options for dining, entertainment and activities.

Regatta-class trivia: The four Regatta-class ships and the four vessels in the fleet of rival line Azamara are sister vessels. They all once belonged to long-defunct Renaissance Cruises. You'll sometimes hear cruising aficionados refer to them by their Renaissance-related class name, the R class.

Bottom line

The Oceania Cruises fleet is relatively easy to understand. As of now, there are just two types of Oceania ships operating, a number that will grow to three in the coming year. All the ships have the same upscale, residential feel, with the main differences among the ships being their size and the number of eateries and bars you'll find on board, as well as the size of their cabins.

If a spacious cabin and more restaurant and bar choices are what matters to you most when cruising, the line's Oceania-class ships or soon-to-debut Allura-class ships are the most logical choice. If you prefer a smaller, more intimate environment with fewer people and don't mind giving up some amenities to have it, the Regatta-class vessels might be a better fit.

Oceania Debuts New Mediterranean Sailings for 2025

Oceania Cruises announced new 2025 Mediterranean itineraries, ranging from nine to 56 days, according to a company statement. 

The line’s Marina and Nautica will set sail in the Mediterranean, Aegean and Adriatic.

The 16 new voyages feature destinations including Athens, Barcelona, Istanbul, Rome and Lisbon, allowing guests to explore resort towns such as Monte Carlo, Cannes, Positano and Sorrento.

“Oceania Cruises is rightly renowned for its inventive and captivating itineraries, and our array of 2025 Mediterranean sailings is the perfect way to spotlight one of the most popular and exciting cruise regions of the world,” said Frank A. Del Rio, president of Oceania Cruises. “With shore excursions to inspire everyone, from active adventurous types to history buffs to foodies, our small, luxurious ships are the perfect way to discover this majestic region of the world.”

Not all cruise passengers want to fill their suitcases with ball gowns and tuxedos, and luxury cruises no longer necessarily mean headache-inducing rules relating to what should be worn when. There are no formal nights on sailings with Oceania Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises and SeaDream Yacht Club. The dress code for SeaDream Yacht Club is simply “country-club casual” although guests are asked to avoid wearing t-shirts or jeans to dinner.

I went on 2 of Royal Caribbean's largest and newest cruise ships. I enjoyed them, but they're not for everyone.

  • Both megaships are jam-packed with people, amenities, and dining options.
  • But if you want a quiet cruise to unique destinations, they might not be for you.

Before booking a vacation at sea, travelers should always research the best cruise line and ship for their needs.

If you're looking for a cheap and fast trip, try Margaritaville at Sea . Craving something more upscale? Consider Oceania Cruises.

But if you're looking for high-end sailing to unique destinations, I'd suggest avoiding Royal Caribbean's megaships .

Royal Caribbean has become synonymous with giant, family-friendly cruise ships

By 2028, Royal Caribbean wants one-third of its fleet to be megaships.

The latest addition, the 1,196-foot-long and 248,663-gross-ton Icon of the Seas, entered service in January, unseating Wonder of the Seas as the world's largest cruise liner.

Together, the two vessels can fit over 19,000 people — about 4,500 crew and 14,500 guests. Each ship has eight neighborhoods and there are 29 bars and 48 eateries between them.

I've attended complimentary sailings on both Wonder and Icon, the longest of which was three nights on the latter. From their colorful pool decks to the inescapable crowds, as a solo-adult traveler, I was equal parts entertained, overwhelmed, and overstimulated.

But admittedly, I had fun. I do love a good waterslide; Wonder has three of them and Icon has six.

If you want to go on a cruise with your children — and if they, like me, love activities like rock climbing and mini golf — Royal Caribbean's megaships could be your best option.

Wonder and Icon are jam-packed with activity spaces like ice-skating rinks and ziplines.

But don't expect a peaceful retreat. The rowdy, bar-hopping adults and screaming children at the water playground aren't conducive to a relaxing vacation.

Megavessels might not be for you if you want a quiet cruise

If you want a relaxing vacation — maybe one that doesn't involve crowds of children — you shouldn't stay on either Royal Caribbean yacht.

There are many ways to have a luxury vacation on Icon of the Seas . But unless you want to pay for upcharged amenities at every turn, you'd be better off spending more upfront to reserve a premium cruise line — especially if you're interested in cruising for the destinations, not the ships.

After all, like most of Royal Caribbean's largest vessels, Icon and Wonder exclusively sail in the Caribbean.

Some destinations, such as French Polynesia, have set restrictions on which cruises can travel there amid concerns about pollution and overcrowding.

If stopping at these ports — or, really, anywhere outside the Caribbean — is at the top of your vacation wish list, you'll have to travel on a smaller Royal Caribbean ship or go with a different cruise line like Oceania , Silversea, and Regent Seven Seas.

You might not get a waterpark, but you'll get a quieter vacation to locations no megaship will likely be allowed to visit.

Tammy Barr, who says she worked on cruises for three years, reveals in a new Insider essay the six things she’d never do on board.

Barr’s nauti list includes shelling out for dining upgrades or a drink package; touching certain surfaces with bare hands; wearing a room key as a necklace; using improper maritime grammar; and risking not returning to the ship on time.

She doesn’t mean to be a keel-joy, but she stern-ly advises against “supplementary” dinner items.

“I know $12 may not seem like much for a steak or lobster tail at dinner, but the cost of the cruise is supposed to include your food,” Barr penned for Insider. “So, even though I enjoy lobster, I stick with the items without the upcharges.”

Data from late 2023 found that a five-night cruise in the Caribbean cost around $736 per person — a colossal 43% hike compared to the same time in 2019, as demand for cruise vacations spiked following the COVID-19 pandemic .

Barr keeps costs in mind while counseling against unlimited drink packages, especially for passengers who plan to leave ship bars to go ashore for the day.

And third, Barr suggests touching common surfaces such as elevator buttons with knuckles or elbows.

“This strategy has worked for me, as I have never contracted norovirus, even when it was running rampant on a ship I was on,” Barr shared. “It’s quite contagious and can linger on your fingertips even after using hand sanitizer. I’d definitely rather be safe than sorry.”

13 outbreaks of norovirus — an easily spread stomach bug — were reported on cruises in 2023, the most since 2012, when there were 16 confirmed outbreaks.

The first norovirus cruise outbreak of 2024 was logged in January, on a Celebrity Cruises ship.

Also to stay safe, Barr recommends not wearing your room key around your neck, as it looks “pretentious” and “like an invitation to be robbed.”

Also, make sure to make it back to the ship on time, so you don't wreck your vacation.

Speaking of con-sea-ted, Barr is particular about how she identifies ships.

“Ships have proper names, and so do not require a definite article. For example, ‘Tomorrow I am embarking on Discovery Princess,’ or ‘I enjoyed scenic cruising on MS Westerdam,'” she imparts to the Insider audience.

And finally, make sure to make it back to the ship on time, so you don’t wreck your vacation.

Just last month, Norwegian Cruise Line left eight passengers stranded on a tiny island in Africa after their private tour ran late.
