Chittorgarh Fort in Rajasthan: The Complete Guide

Chittorgarh Fort

Illustrious Chittorgarh Fort was the capital of the world's longest ruling dynasty, the kingdom of Mewar, for an expansive eight centuries. Not only is it regarded as the greatest fort in Rajasthan, it's one of the most sizable forts in India and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fort was the scene of many dramatic and tragic events during its time, some of which served as inspiration for the controversial 2018 Indian period drama movie "Padmaavat" (based on an epic poem that recounts the legend of Queen Padmavati, wife of 14th century monarch Maharawal Ratan Singh).

The origin of Chittorgarh Fort can be traced back to the 7th century, when Chitrangad Mori of the Maurya dynasty is said to have laid its foundation. The fort came into the possession of Bappa Rawal, who established the Mewar dynasty, in the mid 8th century. However, there are conflicting accounts of how it happened. Either he received the fort as a dowry gift, or seized it in battle. Nevertheless, he made the fort the capital of his extensive new kingdom, which stretched all the way from Gujarat state to Ajmer, in 734.

All was well until 1303, when the fort was attacked for the first time by Allaudin Khilji, brutal ruler of the Delhi Sultanate. Was it because he wanted the strong and strategically-positioned fort for himself? Or, as per to folklore, was it because he desired the king's gorgeous wife Padmavati (Padmini) and wanted her for his harem?

Regardless, the outcome was devastating. About 30,000 of the fort's occupants were murdered, the king was either captured or killed in battle, and Padmavati immolated herself (along with the other royal women) to avoid being dishonored by Allaudin Khilji and his army.

The Mewars managed to reclaim the Chittorgarh Fort and re-establish the rule of their kingdom there in 1326. Rana Kumbha strengthened most of the fort's walls during his reign from 1433 to 1468. The second attack on the fort took place a couple of centuries later in 1535, by Sultan Bahadur Shah of Gujarat who was keen to expand his territory. By that time, the Mewar rulers had developed their kingdom into a military force to be reckoned with. It didn't stop the Sultan from winning the battle though. Although the king's widowed mother, Rani Karnavati, appealed to Mughal Emperor Humayun for help, it didn't arrive in time. The king and his brother, Udai Singh II, escaped. However, it's said that 13,000 women collectively immolated themselves in preference to surrender.

It was a short-lived victory because Emperor Humayun quickly expelled the Sultan from Chittorgarh and reinstated the inexperienced young Mewar king, Rana Vikramaditya, perhaps thinking he could easily manipulate him.

However, unlike many Rajput rulers, the Mewars didn't submit to the Mughals. Pressure was applied, in the form of a grueling attack on the fort by Mughal Emperor Akbar in 1567. His army had to dig tunnels to reach the fort walls, and then blast the walls with mines and cannons to breach them, but finally succeed in taking over the fort in 1568. Rana Udai Singh II had already made his getaway, leaving the fort in the hands of his chieftains. Tens of thousands of common folk were slaughtered by Akbar's army and another round of mass immolation was committed by Rajput women inside the fort.

The Mewar capital was subsequently re-established in Udaipur (where the royal family continues to live and has converted part of their palace into a museum ). Akbar's eldest son, Jehangir, ended up giving the fort back to the Mewars in 1616 as part of a peaceful alliance treaty. However, the terms of the treaty prevented them from carrying out any repair or reconstruction works. Later on, Maharana Fateh Singh added a few palace structures during his reign from 1884 to 1930. Locals have built homes inside the fort though, forming a whole village within its walls.

Chittorgarh Fort is spread across 700 acres atop a 180 meter (590 foot) high hill about two hours northeast of Udaipur, in the southern part of Rajasthan state. The hill and fort are situated near the Gambhiri River, making the setting particularly spectacular.

How to Visit Chittorgarh

The fort is ideally visited on a day trip or side trip from Udaipur , where the nearest airport is located. The most convenient way of getting there is to hire a car and driver from one of the many travel agencies in Udaipur (expect to pay around 3,500 rupees for a full day) and take National Highway 27.

Those who are traveling on a budget may prefer to go by train to Chittorgarh. If you don't mind getting an early start (which is a good idea to avoid the searing heat), the 12991/Udaipur City - Jaipur Intercity Express departs Udaipur at 6 a.m. and arrives in Chittorgarh at 8 a.m. Expect to pay about 200 rupees to get an auto rickshaw from the train station to the fort. Shared autos are available for less. To return to Udaipur, catch the 12992/Jaipur-Udaipur City Intercity Express back at 7.05 p.m. Alternatively, if you'd prefer an earlier afternoon departure, there are a number of other trains to choose from.

The Palace on Wheels and Royal Rajasthan on Wheels luxury trains also stop at Chittorgarh.

Chittorgarh Fort is free to enter and open all the time. However, you'll need to buy a ticket if you want to visit a few specific monuments such as Padmini Palace (the main attraction). The cost is 40 rupees for Indians and 600 rupees for foreigners. Admission is from 9.30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (last entry) daily. The government museum inside Fateh Prakash Palace also has a separate entry fee of 20 rupees for Indians and 100 rupees for foreigners. It's closed on Mondays.

The fort's substantial size will require you to have some sort of transport to get around. If you don't have your own car, you can hire a bicycle or auto rickshaw for the day. These are available from near the ticket counter, along with tourist guides (recommended if you want to learn about the detailed history of the fort). If you decide to hire a guide, make sure you bargain and choose well. Their rates and knowledge are variable.

Allow a minimum of three to four hours to see the important monuments. They're all marked on Google Maps, which provides an easy way of navigating. Ideally, time your visit to enjoy sunset at the fort too.

September through March are the best months to visit the fort, as the summer heat (from April to June) is quite savage and this is followed by the monsoon season up until the end of August. Chittorgarh doesn't receive much rain, so it remains uncomfortably hot throughout the monsoon.

Make sure you have sun protection such as a hat, sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes.

Do note that there are monkeys inside the fort. They tend to behave themselves but can be unpredictable and are hence best avoided.

In addition, the fact that the fort is free to enter means that a lot of locals hang out there. Females, especially foreigners, may receive unwanted attention and feel uncomfortable at times.

If you'd prefer to stay in Chittorgarh rather than visit it on a day trip, Chittorgarh Fort Haveli is a decent budget option that's located inside the fort walls near Rampole Gate. Rates range from 1,500 to 2,500 rupees ($20 to $34) per night for a double. The superbly refurbished Padmini Haveli Guesthhome , in the village inside the fort, is also a wonderful place to stay. Expect to pay 3,500 to 4,500 rupees ($48 to $62) per night, including breakfast.

Padmini Havel has a rooftop restaurant that serves delicious vegetarian Rajasthani fare. It's a refreshing spot to end the day, or have lunch.

What to See

Entering the fort is an experience in itself, as you'll pass through seven massive fortified stone gates called pols . The fort is in the process of being restored and renovated, with the works expected to be completed by 2020. Until then, unfortunately not all of it is accessible.

Padmini Palace, not surprisingly, draws the biggest crowd. This white, three-story building is actually a 19th century replica of what Queen Padmavati's original abode may have looked like. Maharana Sajjan Singh ordered it to be constructed in 1880. Unfortunately, much of it is dilapidated. Most people visit it only because of the famous legend connected to it. The fort's other authentic places are worth seeing more.

The sprawling 15th century palace of Rana Kumbha is the largest structure in the fort and hints of how glorious his reign must've been. Rana Ratan Singh II's evocative palace was added in the 16th century and sits secluded by a lake on the far northern side of the fort. Its location, away from the central monument area, means it's less crowded and a great place for photography.

Inside nearby Fateh Prakash Palace, the newly-restored government museum has an extensive collection of weapons, royal paintings, medieval sculptures, a model of the fort, and magnificent recreation of the royal durbar of Mewar kings. It's worth visiting to learn more about the fort and its historical importance, as well as for the beautiful palace architecture.

The fort has two distinctive landmark towers—Vijay Stambha (the Tower of Victory) erected by Rana Kumbha to mark his triumph over Mohammed Khilji of Malwa in the 15th century, and the 12th century Kirti Stambha (the Tower of Fame) built by a Jain merchant to exalt the first Jain tirthankara (spiritual teacher) Adinath.

The fort's multitude of water bodies, to sustain a vast army, are of interest. The major one is picturesque Gaumukh reservoir on the western side of the fort, not far from Vijay Stambha. It's considered to be sacred by locals and has fish in it that you can feed.

Chittorgarh Fort is also associated with another renowned historical figure in India, Meera Bai, a spiritual poet and devout follower of Lord Krishna. She married Mewar prince Bhojraj Singh in the early 16th century. After he was killed in war, it's said that she refused to commit sati (throw herself on his funeral pyre) and moved to Vrindavan to further her devotion to Lord Krishna. The Meera temple near Vijay Stambha is dedicated to her. There are numerous other well-maintained temples to see, including some magnificent intricately-carved Jain temples.

The place where royal cremations happened, known as Maha Sati , is a grassy ground below Vijay Stambha. Apparently, it's where the royal Rajput women immolated themselves as well. Rajput women hold an annual Jauhar Mela procession inside the fort in every February to commemorate the bravery of their ancestors who chose this death before dishonor.

If you're keen to hear stories about the fort's history and characters involved in it, you may wish to stay back to attend the evening sound and light show at the fort.

What Else to do Nearby

There's enough to do in the area to occupy a full day. It you want to go shopping, avoid buying anything inside Chittorgarh fort (you'll pay too much and/or get poor quality products). Instead, trawl the markets in Chittorgarh town. Popular ones are Sadar Bazaar, Rana Sanga Market, Fort Road Market, and Gandhi Chowk. You'll find an array of goods including metalwork, textiles, miniature paintings, traditional Thewa jewelry, leather shoes, puppets, and handmade toys. Akola printed fabrics, made from vegetable dyes, are a specialty of the region.

Nagri , about 25 minutes northeast of Chittorgarh alongside the Bairach River, was an important ancient town known as Madhyamika. Excavations have found punch-marked coins there that are believed to date as far back as about the 6th century BC. Rajasthan's oldest Vishnu temple, from the 2nd century BC, was also uncovered at Nagri. The town flourished during the Mauyan and Gupta periods, and remained an important religious center up to the 7th century. It's in ruins now, although old coins apparently still turn up.

There are more things to see in Bassi village, about 15 minutes further on from Nagri. Handicrafts such as sculptures, pottery and woodwork are a highlight. Other attractions are temples, step wells and cenotaphs.

If you're traveling by road from Udaipur to Chittorgarh, Sanwariyaji temple dedicated to Lord Krishna, can be visited on the highway about 50 minutes from Chittorgarh. It was recently grandly rebuilt and looks captivating.

An enchanting beauty propels an entrancing beauty, and an entrancing beauty only thrives. It transcends ages and time!Sometimes it is a legendary figure that becomes a page in the history books, and sometimes it is a monument, a reminder of a great era.

The Chittorgarh fort in Rajasthan continues to fascinate historians even today. A visit to Chittorgarh fort, which covers an area of around 700 acres and has a perimeter wall of 13 km, is a must for travelers who want to see India’s most awe-inspiring architectural marvels.

It is one of the most significant forts of Rajasthan. As the local saying goes, if there is a fort it is Chittorgarh, the rest of them are smaller fortresses. Rajput valour, pride, sacrifice, and loyalty are reflected in this fort. As part of the ‘Hill Forts of Rajasthan’ World Heritage Site, it was also declared a World Heritage Site in 2013 by UNESCO.

The Chittorgarh fort is the biggest reason to visit Chittor in Rajasthan. In this article, I will highlight the must-see sites inside the massive fortress. I’ve also added destinations close to Chittorgarh that might be worth a spot in your bucketlist.

1. Chittorgarh Fort

Chittorgarh Fort has a significant place in Indian history. Built by the Maurya Rulers in the 7th century AD, This fort is the largest in India and it is located in Rajasthan State. Spread across 692 acres of land, it is a remarkable example of the then Rajputana architecture.

Today, Chittorgarh Fort is a popular tourist spot filled with the heroic memories of the Rajput Rajas and Kings of the previous. Perhaps this is a major reason why tourists love to come here in great numbers annually. In 2013, Chittorgarh Fort was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The interesting thing is that Chittorgarh Fort was once known as the “Water Fort” as it had about 84 water bodies. This was way back in history, however. Today, out of these 84 water bodies only about 22 are left.

The Chittorgarh Fort is also believed to be a haunted site as many lives were lost here due to the Rajput Pratha (a ritual or tradition) of Jauhar. As such, many people avoid visiting the fort during the evening hours.

2. Padmini’s Palace (Maharani Shri Padmini Palace)

Queen Padmni’s palace is one of the best places to visit in Chittorgarh. This palace was the residing place of Rani Padmini (also hailed as Queen Padmavati) who was the wife of Maharana Rattan Singh, the monarch of the Mewar Kingdom who ruled between 1302 and 1303 CE.

The magnificent palace is a historical landmark connected to Rani Padmini’s act of selflessness after Delhi Sultan Alauddin Khilji stormed Chittorgarh. Many legends boast the bewildering beauty of Rani Padmini. It is said that her beauty won many hearts. One of which was of Alauddin who challenged to win over Chittor and Maharana Rattan Singh to make Rani Padmini his queen.

The two-story monument is elevated on rocky ground and stands quite strongly in the heart of the Chittorgarh Fort. A lotus pool surrounds the fort, adding to the attraction’s appeal. The pool, with its colourful lotuses portraying grace and beauty in the rocky Chittor Fort, makes one think of how magnificent this location must have been for royal women back in the day.

Visitors from all over the world come to Chittorgarh to see the impressive historical site and learn about the Rajputs of the Mewar Kingdom’s exploits and sacrifices. When Alauddin Khilji attacked the palace, the Rajput women gave their life at the Padmini Palace. Their willingness to battle or die rather than risk dishonour demonstrates their valour and courage. The Padmini Palace, albeit smaller than the other palaces on the grounds, is seen to be lovely and enthralling because of Rani Padmini’s beauty, intelligence, and charm as well as the tragic tale surrounding her demise. When one visits the monument for oneself, the palace’s intriguing history becomes much more apparent.

The Padmini Palace is open for visiting from 8AM to 6PM. One can visit this historic palace on any day since it remains open for all days.

3. Vijay Stambh (Tower of Victory)

Located 600m away from Kumbha Palace and 8km from Chittorgarh Railway Station, Vijay Stambh or Victory Tower is an imposing historical monument located in Chittorgarh Fort of Rajasthan, India. This is also one of the best places to visit in Chittorgarh.

Maharana Kumbha of Mewar constructed the beautiful Vijaya Stambh in 1448 AD to mark his victory over the combined forces of Malwa and Gujarat led by Mahmud Khilji. Dedicated to Lord Vishnu, Vijay Stambh is a 9-story tower with a height of 37m. Made with red sand stone and white marble, this tower has a balcony on each level.

Rana Kumbha’s court scholar, Atri, began writing an inscription in the uppermost story that provides a thorough chronological chronicle of the lives and accomplishments of the monarchs of Chittaur. His son Mahesh later finished it.

The Rajput-styled Vijay Stambh is adorned with musical instruments, swords, god and goddess representations, and architectural embellishments. The Ramayana and Mahabharata are depicted in intricate sculptures on the tower. The tower is a remarkable example of religious pluralism practiced by the Rajputs.

Vijay stambh is open daily from 9:45AM to 6PM.

4. Kirti Stambh (Tower of Fame)

The Kirti Stambh, also known as the Tower of Fame, is a famous and an ancient tower built on the premises of the Fort of Chittorgarh by Rana Kumbha to commemorate his victory over the Khilji Dynasty.

It is the oldest tower at the premises of the fort and it towers up to 22 meters from the base. Based on the Solanki style of architecture, this tower attracts tourists from all over the world, so don’t miss it.

This seven-story tower, renowned for the elaborate carvings of Digambar, contains a lovely Adinatha statue on the second floor. As one ascends to the top floor, one is treated to breathtaking beautiful vistas of Chittorgarh.

5. Gaumukh Reservoir (Gau Mukh Kund)

A sacred spring of water called Gaumukh Kund is located on the western side of the renowned Chittorgarh Fort. Gaumukh literally translates to “cow’s mouth.” The water eventually enters the reservoir after passing through the rock fissures. Travelers are permitted to feed the reservoir’s fish.

Another well-known sight is the Rani Bindar Tunnel, which is close to this reservoir. This tunnel, according to a tradition, connects to a room below ground where Rani Padmini of Chittorgarh executed “Jauhar.”

6. Fateh Prakash Palace

The Fateh Prakash Palace is one of the most popular places to visit on the Chittorgarh Fortress. This palace was built during during the reign of Rana Fateh Singh, and it served as Rana’s residence. Built in Rajasthani style, it is decorated with beautiful wall paintings that showcase legends from Rajasthan. The Fateh Prakash Palace now houses a museum.

7. Rana Kumbha palace

One of the most fascinating places to see in Chittorgarh fort is Rana Kumbha Palace.The palace’s enormous size in its damaged state serves as a reminder of what an imposing building it once was.

The largest structure in the Chittorgarh Fort, Rana Kumbha Palace has a rich history. People like Bappa Rawal, Maharana Kumbha, rani Padmani, and Princess Meera Bai, among others, lived there.

This palace is also linked to the tragic story of Panna Dhai, who gave her infant son as a sacrifice in order to preserve baby Udai Singh. This palace’s dungeons are also thought to be where Rani Padmani and the other women who lived there killed Johar.

8. Meera Temple & Kumbhshyam Temple

The Meera Bai Temple in Chittorgarh was constructed using a style of North Indian architecture that features four pavilions on each side of an open arcade in the area of the chamber. It is situated within the grounds of the Kumbha Shyam Temple at the Chittorgarh fort.

A modest Lord Krishna temple was constructed close to the Kumbh temple at the behest of Meera Bai, an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna. Maharana Sangram Singh was the builder.

Built by Maharana Kumbha in 1449, Kumbh Temple is also known as Kumbha Shyam Temple (Temple of Varah). In the temple, there is also a small Chhatr that was constructed in Rai Das’ (Swami Ravidas’) of Varanasi’s honour.

Meera Bai’s personal place of prayer was the Kumbha Shyam Temple. She stayed here for a very long time in devotion to Lord Vishnu. She served the needy and the pilgrims who were visiting with her personal fortune since she had good intentions. Meera Bai was a devotee of the Guru who originated in Varanasi. Her guru, Swami Ravidas, also known as Swami Raidas, has a Chattri at the Kumbha Shyam Temple. In this holy site, the footprint imprints of Guru Ravidas have been preserved.

9. Kalika Mata Temple

This temple dedicated to Lord Bhadrakali. The Kali Mata Temple was built in the 14th century, and is made from the ruins of the 8th century sun temple that was destroyed after the attack by Allaudin Khilji. The temple attracts a large number of visitors during the annual fair held near the temple complex. People from far and wide visit the temple to pay homage to Goddess Kali.

Chittorgarh, visit the land of india’s finest fort.

Chittorgarh resonates with stories of Rajputana bravery, pride and passion. The bards of Rajasthan sing tales of courage and sacrifice recounting stories that are known to every child and adult in the city. Chittorgarh is named after its most imposing structure, the Chittorgarh Fort which stands atop a 180 metre high hill and is spread across 700 acres. Chittorgarh Fort has had a tumultuous past. This bastion of the Rajputs has faced violent attacks thrice in its entire history. The first was in 1303 when the Sultan of Delhi, Ala-ud-din Khilji, in 1533, it was Bahadur Shah, the Sultan of Gujarat, who caused immense destruction. Four decades later, in 1568, Mughal Emperor Akbar attacked and seized the fort. It was finally in 1616, under the rule of Mughal Emperor Jahangir that the fort was returned to the Rajputs.

Light & Sound Show at CHITTORGARH FORT

Chittorgarh Fort Light & Sound Show is a traditional light & sound show featuring mesmerizing impacts of DMX controlled LED luminaries, gobo lights, 5.1 audio surround system. Show depicts history of the fort, its foundation, its rulers, wars & battles fought at the Fort, attack by Alauddin Khalji. Light and show is appearing twice in this section. At first and at last. VIJAY STAMBH

Vijay Stambh (the Tower of Victory) was built by Maharana Kumbha between 1440 AD and 1448 AD to immortalise his triumph of defeating the Muslim rulers of Malwa and Gujarat. Built partly from red sandstone and partly white marble, this architectural wonder is nine-storey tower decorated with detailed sculptures of Hindu gods and goddesses. Narrow steps lead to the terrace where one can catch a spectacular view of the entire town from the balconies.

KIRTI STAMBH

This Tower of Fame is dedicated to Adinathji, the 1st Jain Tirthankara (great teacher). Adorned by the figures of the Digambars (Jain monks), this seven-storied tower was built by a wealthy Jain merchant in 12th century AD Is also located nearby Jain temple of Nemi nath ji, Adinath ji and Parshwanath ji.

Constructed by Maharana Fateh Singh, this palace functioned as his residence. It was built in the Rajput style of architecture as a declaration of his taste for art and culture. It has now been converted into a museum. The palace has a vast collection of wood crafts of Bassi village, post medieval statues of Jain Ambica and Indra from Rashmi village, weapons such as axes, knives and ancient shields, clay replicas of regional tribal people clad in their traditional costumes, paintings, and crystal ware. JAIN TEMPLES

The fort of Chittor has six Jain temples contained within its walls. The largest among them is the temple of Bhagawan Adinatha which has 52 ‘devkulikas’.Satbees Deori Jain Temple is situated on the right side in front of Badi Pol in Chittorgarh Fort. Probably because of the total 27 deities built in the temple, it is called the satbees deori temple. The craftsmanship done on the inside and outside in these temples is amazing. KALIKA MATA TEMPLE

Built in 8th century AD, this ancient structure was initially constructed to worship the sun god. In the 14th century, Rana Hameer rebuilt it and then temple was dedicated to Goddess Kali, the symbol of power and valour.

Tulja Bhawani Temple

Dedicated to Goddess Durga, this temple was built by Banveer, Maid in 16th century. Legend says that it is named after Banvir who donated various ornaments (Tula Dan) equaling his weight for relief funds. In the later period, due to the dominance of the Marathas over the Chittorgarh fort, the Marathas may have installed the idol of their adorable mother goddess Tulja Bhavani in this temple, after that this temple has come to be known as the temple of Tulja Bhavani.

GAUMUKH RESERVOIR

Gaumukh Reservoir is a deep tank that is fed by a spring. The spring emerges from a rock formation resembling a Gaumukh or ‘cow’s mouth’. The tank is considered sacred by the locals.

RATAN SINGH PALACE

The winter palace of the royal family, it overlooks a small lake. Although fairly rundown now, it is an interesting place to explore and attracts many tourists.

RANA KUMBHA PALACE

A ruined edifice of great historical and architectural interest, this is one of the most massive monuments in the Fort of Chittor. Due to the restoration of this ancient palace by Maharana Kumbha, it is known as Kumbha Mahal. The original palace predates Kumbha. The main entrance to the palace is the Tripolia Darwaza, which is currently closed. The open area in front of the Tripolia door is called Darikhana. On the right side of the Darikhana are situated the Suraj Gokhada and the main palace and on the left side are the Janana Mahal and Kanwarpada’s palaces. There are many dungeons under the palaces which may have been due to the construction of new palaces above the chambers of the earlier palace. Many historians have expressed the estimate of Jauhar in these cellars.

KUMBHA SHYAM TEMPLE

Kumbhashyam Temple was built in the 8th century. Originally this temple was dedicated to Lord Varaha (boar). Maharana Kumbha renovated this temple in the fifteenth century and the idol of Kumbhashyam was installed in this temple. Built in Indo-Aryan style is a wonderful example of architectural craft.

MEERABAI TEMPLE

Meerabai, an ardent devotee of Lord Krishna’s, worshipped him at this temple. The structure is designed in the classic North Indian style of temples. It rises from a raised plinth and its conical roof can be seen from far. The temple houses a beautiful shrine surrounded by an open porch with four small pavilions in four corners.

MENAL TEMPLE & WATERFALL

80 kilometrs from Bhilwara, on the Bhilwara-Kota road is a beautiful waterfall where the water falls to a depth of 150 metres into a V-shaped valley with great force, making for a beautiful sight. People from all corners of the State flock to take it in. The best time to visit the Menal Waterfall is from July to October.

Nagari is a village situated 18 Km North of Chittorgarh, on the banks of river Berach. In the ancient era, it was known as Majhimika or Madhyamika .According to the inscription found in Barli, near Ajmer; in 443 BC, this town was named as Majhimika. It was a flourishing town from the Mauryan period, and remained so up to the Gupta period. The excavations found here are surrounded by many interesting facts and show the signs of strong Hindu and Buddhist influence. A large number of punch marked coins, along with other old coins were also found in the excavations. In the first century, Nagari was ruled by the Sibi tribes. The coins of the Sibi tribe found here have the legend ‘majhamikaya sibi janapadasa’. The Sibi tribes were probably defeated by yavans (Greeks). Patanjali, the contemporary of Pushyamitra Sunga, has mentioned in his Mahabhashya, about the attack of the Yavans (Greeks) on Madhyamika in 150 BC. After then, Nagari came under the influence of the Western Kshatrapa in the 2nd century. In the 3rd century, Nagari was ruled by the Malavas. Later, it was conquered by the Huna king. Major tourist attractions in Nagari include the Ancient Shiva Temple, Hathiyon ka Bara, and Ubhdivat or the Prakash stambh.

BHAINSRORGARH FORT

Bhainsrorgarh Fort is perched on a steep slate ridge, about 200 feet high, surrounded by the Chambal and Brahmani rivers. It is located 235 kilometers north-east of Udaipur and 50 kilometers south of Kota. Upon seeing this grand fort and its fascinating beauty, British historian Colonel James Todd once said that if he was offered a jagir (estate) in Rajasthan and given the option to choose, it would be Bhainsogarh. This fort has a remarkable history, it was built by Rawat Lal singh-II son of Rawat Kesari Singh of Salumber. Bhainsrorgarh was granted to Lalsingh as jangeer by Maharana Jagat Singh II of Mewar in 1741 AD. and there are various legends about this place. But, there is no accurate information about who built the fort and exactly when it was built. However, the Bhainsrorgarh Fort is believed to be built in the 2nd century and there are several folklores about who built the fort. It passed through the hands of several clans before becoming a part of the Mewar Kingdom. It is believed that Allauddin Khilji also attacked this fort and destroyed all the old temples and buildings, that’s why the older history of this fort still remains unknown. Bhainsrorgarh Fort has now been converted into a luxury heritage hotel by the erstwhile royal family. Surrounded by rivers on three sides and nestled among the Aravali ranges and dense forests, the beauty of this fort attracts tourists from all over the world.At present this fort is being operated as a Heritage Hotel.

BAROLI TEMPLES

The ancient temples of Baroli, a wonderful example of Hindu architecture, was built by the Huna rulers in the 9th Century, and is located on the confluence of Brahmani and Chambal rivers in Rawatbhata which is at a distance of 115 km from Chittorgarh district. The main temple in these is the Ghatseshwar Mahadev temple, apart from which there are 9 temples within the temple complex. The Shringar Chauri built opposite to the Ghateshwar Mahadev Temple is the premise of the marriage ceremony of ruler Allaat of Mewar and Huna Princess Hariyadevi. Through this marriage, a connection between the Guilla and the Hunas was established.

JAIMAL AND PATTA’S PALACE

Located inside the the Chittorgarh Fort, Jaimal and Patta’s Palace is a symbol of the bravery and gallantry of the Rajputs. According to historian Gaurishankar Hirachand Ojha, in 1567, as Akbar’s giant army surrounded the fort of Chittorgarh with an intention to attack the kingdom, the chieftains of Maharana Uday Singh (ruler of the Mewar dynasty, presently Chittorgarh) unanimously decided that it was wise at the moment to send Maharana's family to the hills in the company of some warlords. Following this, the responsibility of protecting the fort was given to Rathod Jaimal and Sisodia Patta. In the war, Jaimal and Patta sacrificed their lives while exhibiting extraordinary valour. Impressed by their fearlessness, Akbar himself ordered the construction of figures of the two brave hearts sitting on their elephant outside the Agra Fort. The statues were later removed by Aurangzeb. In the Chittorgarh Fort, where Jaimal and Patta had lost their lives, one can find a cenotaph made in their honour.

BHAMASHAH KI HAVELI

Chittorgarh is a city that resonates with Rajputana pride, passion, and bravery. Full of forts and palaces that let you travel back to the past, Chittorgarh has a number of places of interest that can satisfy a traveler’s soul. One of the lesser known places in the city, Bhamashah ki Haveli elicits a sense of former grandeur that well befits the person it was made for. Bhamashah has held quite an important place in Rajput history, being one of the most well-known ministers to Maharana Pratap. He and his brother Tarachand are well known as warriors of great acumen, having fought a number of battles under MaharanaPratap, including the one at Haldighati. Infact Maharana Pratap ran out of funds for his fight against the Mughals, when Bhamashah and Tarachand gave him their own wealth. Located in front of the topkhana in Chittorgarh, the Haveli has been maintained by the Archeological Survey of India. Surrounded by custard apple trees, there is also a Mahadev temple near the Haveli, and right behind are the Moti Bazaar and Nagina Bazaar as well. At the entrance, you are greeted by a pillared verandah which was most likely used as a place to meet the common folk and guests. Venturing further inside, you can glimpse a number of rooms that rise up to three floors at places. The location of the Haveli is such that it doesn’t see a lot of footfall, but it is one place that is definitely worth a visit the next time you are in Chittorgarh.

On the Chittorgarh Udaipur Highway a grand temple of Sanwaliya ji situated in Mandafiya village, where millions of devotees visit every year. According to the local residents, in the year 1840, on the basis of the dream of a shepherd named Bholanath Gurjar, three idols were found in the excavation on the border of Bhadsauda-Bagund village, in which one idol was established on the boundary of Bhadsauda-Bagund village and the temple was constructed is known as Prakatya Sthal. The second idol was installed in Bhadsauda village and the temple was constructed there is the oldest temple. The third grand temple is situated in Mandfiya Village known as Sanwaliya ji Dham Temple. Bassi Village

The ruins of a medieval fort built in the 16th century and the Shiva sagar Kund and temples are the main places of intrest in Bassi Village. Bassi village is famous for its wooden art. The small wooden temples built here are called Kavad which depict the episodes of mythological stories.

Samidheshwar Temple

A wonderful example of medieval India's temple architecture the Samidheshwar temple was built in the 11th century by Parmar Raja Bhoj of Malwa. This temple also known by the name of Tribhavannarayan and Bhoj Jagti .Solanki king Kumarpal of Gujarat came to see Chittor after defeating Arneraj (Anoji) Chauhan of Ajmer in 1150 AD. He had offered prayers in this temple and had also presented a village to this temple and had put his inscription there. Maharana Mokal got it renovated in 1428, due to which it is also called Mokal ji's temple. Three facesed idol of Lord Shiva placed in Samidheshwar Temple is very similar to the main idol of Lord Shiva of Elephanta Cave of Mumbai.

Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary established in 1988 is situated at a distance of five kilometers from Bassi village. This sanctuary falls in Vindhyan hill range, The forest here used to be the hunting ground for erstwhile rulers of Mewar. Old artistic Audhis (Hunting Towers) are worth seeing. The diverse habitats like wetlands, groves of mixed woodlands and stands of Dhok and Khair trees enrich the area with a variety of animals like Chital, Sambar, Common fox, Wild Boar and Leopard. The Orai, Bassi and Sarana are excellent sites for many migratory and resident birds specially Sarus Crane.

Sitamata wildlife Sanctuary is spread over the Aravali and Vindhyachal ranges. It is the only forest where teak trees of building value are found. The thickly vegetated sanctuary has about 50% teak trees beside salar, tendu, amla, bamboo and bel etc. Three rivers flow through the forest; Jakham and Karmoj are the major ones. The key fauna of the sanctuary are leopard, hyena, jackal, fox jungle cat, porcupine, spotted deer, wild bear, four horned antelope and nilgai etc. The most important and conspicuous animal of the sanctuary is the flying squirrel, which can be observed gliding between the trees during thr night.

FEED FISH AT GAUMUKH RESERVOIR

Best Places to Visit in Chittorgarh

The former capital of the Sisodia Rajput dynasty of Mewar, the city is located in Rajasthan. Chittorgarh or Chittaurgarh is a city and a municipality in Rajasthan state of western India. It lies on the Berach River which is a tributary of the Banas. The city of Chittaurgarh is located on the banks of rivers Gambhir and Berach. The city is famous for its bravery, pride, and passion. You can hear the tales of their heroes from everyone in the city. The people of the city worship Meera. Located on the banks of rivers Gambhiri and berach, the city is also known as Panna dai. The city was attacked thrice by many kings. It was finally in 1616 when the city was returned to the Rajputs. During the war. The men fought to the death and the women committed Sati.  The city is also famous for the Garh( fort)at Chittor which is the greatest Indian and tourists from all over the world come to explore the city. 1. Chittorgarh Fort

The first and one of the most beautiful places to visit in Chittorgarh is Chittorgarh fort. This UNESCO world heritage is one of the largest forts in India. The fort is located 175 km to the east of Udaipur. The fort was the capital of Mewar. The fort is situated on a 180meter high hill on the banks of a river beach. The fort resembles Rajput’s bravery. Pride and honor. There are seven gates to the fort which are the hanuman gate, Ganesh gate, Bhairon gate, Padan gate, Jodla gate, Lakshman gate, and the main gate which is the ram gate. It is believed that the water body near the fort was created by the legendary hero of Mahabharata, Bhishma. It also said that the fort was conquered by Alauddin Khilji to force the wife of Raja Ratan Singh, rani Padmini, to marry him. After which the ladies of the fort including Rani Padmini committed Jauhar. The ownership of the fort was transferred to many kings from Alauddin Khilji to his son to bahadur shah to Akbar. The women committed Jauhar in the fort many times and there were many losses of lives. The fort was spread across an area of 700 acres at 180 feet high hill. The fort has 65 structures which include temples, palaces, memorials, and water bodies. There is also a Meera bai temple. There are two towers of victory inside the fort which are Vijay Stambha(Tower of Victory) and Kirti Stambh(Tower of frame). For once you will lose yourself in this beautiful fort. You will require 3 to 4 hours to explore the fort. You should not miss sunset time at the fort. And beware of monkeys inside the fort.

2. Vijaya Stambha

The Vijaya Stambha is an imposing victory monument. It is situated within Chittor Fort in Chittorgarh, Rajasthan, India. Also known as the “Tower of Victory” , the tower is situated in Chittorgarh fort. Constructed by the Mewar king, Rana Kumbha, in period 1448 to commemorate his victory over the combined armies of Malwa and Gujarat that was led by Mahmud Khilji. The tower is dedicated to Lord Krishna. The inscribed slabs in the uppermost story contain a detailed genealogy of the rulers of Chittaur and tell a story of their deeds. These slabs are ascribed to Ran Kumbha court scholar, Atri and his son Mahesh. The names of the architect, Sutradhar Jaita, and his three sons who assisted him, Napa, Puja, and Poma, are beautifully carved on the eighteen floors of the tower. Tourists can have a spectacular view of the entire city from the tower. The tower is 37.19m long and built of red and white marble stones. Tower has images of gods, weapons, musical instruments, and many more. Tourists should not miss the night view of the beautiful lights at the tower. A tour of Chittorgarh will be incomplete without visiting this tower. One will have a great feeling of victory and enjoy old architecture. Tourists have to climb 157 steps to reach the tower.  The top floor of the tower contains an image of the goddess Padmavati. The tower is a great piece of architecture and a major tourist attraction. 3. Kalika Mata Temple

Kālikā Mata Temple means “the great black Mother”. This temple belongs to a Hindu goddess and serves as a pilgrim center at the summit of Pavagadh Hill in the Panchmahal district, India, within the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park. It dates back to the 10th or 11th centuries. The temple consists of three images of goddesses: the central image is of Kalika Mata, flanked by Kali on the right and Bahucharamata on the left. On Chitra sud 8, a fair is held at the temple which is spiritually attended by thousands of devotees. The temple is known to be the site of one of the Great holy Shakti Peethas. One can reach easily to temple with the help of a ropeway. Kalika Mata Temple is an 8th-century Hindu temple that has been located within the Chittor Fort in the Chittorgarh municipality of Rajasthan state in India. The upper parts of the structure are more recent in today’s time.

4. Meera Temple

This temple has been dedicated to Meera Bai, a mystic poetess and great devotee of Lord Krishna. She was born in Kurki village near Merta to Ratan Singh Rathore and was married to Bhojraj, son of Rana Sanga of Mewar. The temple is constructed in the Indo-Aryan style by Rana Kumbh.  There are statues of five human bodies outside the temple indicating that all castes and creeds are treated equally. Her faith in lord Krishna was unshakeable which can be told by the story that she survived even after drinking poison that was sent by her in-laws.  Devotees sit quietly inside the temple and perform meditation. There are carvings on the walls and pillars of the temple depicting stories of Meera bai, lord Krishna and their sacrifices for each other. It was the only place that was not seized by Alauddin Khilji.

5. Padmini Palace

Padmini who is also popularly known as Padmavati was a legendary 13th–14th-century queen also known as Rani (in Hindi) of the Mewar kingdom of present-day India. Several 16th-century texts mention her, of which the earliest source is Padmavat, an epic fictionalized poem written by Malik Muhammad Jayasi in 1540 CE. The palace is also called the heart of the Chittorgarh fort. The palace is a three-storied white building. The palace is surrounded by a lotus pool which multiplies the beauty of the palace.  It is the place where raja ratan Singh showed the mirror image of Rani Padmini(also known as queen Padmavati) to Alauddin Khilji. Allaudin Khilji was mesmerized by her beauty and decided to win her by attacking raja ratan Singh. In the fight, Raja Ratan Singh was killed which led to many women including Rani Padmini committing Jauhar. The palace attracts tourists from all over the world and is a major tourist attraction in Chittorgarh fort. The palace can be explored for 45 minutes to 1 hour. The palace is located 5km away from Chittorgarh fort and auto-rickshaws are available. Rani Padmini was a great combination of beauty, brains, and strength as she chooses to kill herself rather than face dishonor from enemies and gives a strong message to all the women. September to March is the best time to visit the palace.

6. Kumbha Palace

Kumbhakarna popularly known as Rana Kumbha was the ruler of the Mewar kingdom of western India. He belonged to the Sisodia clan of Rajputs and was the son of Rana Mokal Singh of Mewar by his wife Sobhagya Devi, a daughter of Jaitmal Sankhla, the Paramara fief-holder of Runkot in the state of Marwar this place is one of the oldest places to visit in Chittorgarh. The architectural view of this place is really very appreciable. You should visit here once for a better traveling experience at Chittorgarh.

7. Gaumukh Kund

The place is also known as Gaumukh Kund. the place is shaped like the mouth of the cow and hence named Gaumukh Kund. Gaumukh Kund is also called “Tirth Raj” and no one knows from where the water is coming in the Gaumukh Kund. Gaumukh Kund is a sacred water body that is situated in the western part of the Chittorgarh Fort. ‘Gaumukh’ stands for ‘mouth of a cow’. The water flows through the cracks in the rocks and falls into the reservoir. The water flows 365 days from the cow’s mouth. There is also a statue of lord shiva and goddess Laxmi near the place where the water flows from the cow’s mouth. Devotees come here to complete their holy journey. Tourists should not miss the sunset view of the reservoir. Feeding ng of fishes in the reservoir is considered a ritual activity and tourists also feed the fish. Smadeshwar temple is also located near the reservoir. The binder tunnel is a nearby tourist attraction and is the place where Rani Padmini committed Jauhar. the reservoir can be visited at any time of the year and is a major attraction for holy pilgrims. 8. Ban Mata Temple

Ban Mata is also known as Sisodia Rajput Kuldevi. There are gates in three directions( east, west, and south)  to enter the temple. This temple was originally built by Maharana Hamir in the 1300s for Maa Barvadi. Now an idol of Mahalakshmi has been consecrated in the Annapurna temple. Devotees from all over India came to worship the goddess. There are thousands of devotees during the Navratri time. Earlier Sisodias used to worship the goddess Durga. But once she fought with the demon Banasura and conquered him. It is believed after losing Chittorgarh in a battle, Maharana Hamir went to Gujrat where he met Maa Barvadiji, who blessed him and advised him to fight again. She sent her son- Baaruji to help the Maharana and also gave him 500 horses. With the blessings of Maa, the Maharana was able to win back Chittorgarh and then decided to build the temple. Then she was known as ban Mata Ji. The temple is situated on a 500ft high hill.

9. Bassi Wildlife Sanctuary

The sanctuary is a perfect destination for wildlife enthusiasts in places to visit in Chittorgarh. The sanctuary is 25km away from the city and home to animals like panthers, cheetahs, wild boars, hyenas, jackals, four-horned antelopes, foxes, and many more. There are also many birds in the sanctuary like a peacock, blue ball, cuckoo, eagles, whistling duck, and many more. The best time to visit the sanctuary is from October to November when there is an autumn season in which the sanctuary looks astonishing. The sanctuary is spread across an area of 15,290 hectares on the west border of the Vindhyachal mountain ranges and was established in 1988. The sanctuary also has dry forests which include Dhok, Churel, and Butea. Tourists can also find herbs and beautiful flowers. It is the best place to spend time with your family and loved ones and enjoy some relaxing time by enjoying the beauty of this small place. This place is located 90km away from Chittorgarh on Chittorgarh-Bundi road. The place is the best picnic spot. It is also known as mini Khajuraho as there are beautiful landscapes and temples around the place. The famous menal waterfall is a major tourist attraction. Tourists can also find a variety of birds and animals near the waterfall.  The waterfall has a height of 150feet and is located on the river Menali.  There are many temples in the menal and one of the most famous temples is the Mahabaleshwar temple. The temple is dedicated to lord shiva and was built in the 11th century AD by king Someshwar and his wife queen Suhavadevi. There are also temples like dev Narayan temple, mental hanuman temple, Joganiya Mata temple, and many more which attract many devotees. Tourists can also explore the wildlife of menal by taking a jungle safari or a bird-watching session. The village and the temples were also visited by Prithviraj Chauhan during the summers. The place can be visited any time from June to February but it is advised to visit post-monsoons as streams are full of water.

11. Sanwariyaji Temple

The temple is located 40km away from Chittorgarh on the Chittorgarh-Udaipur highway. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna. It is believed that in the year 1840, Bholaram Gurjar, who was a milkman, had a dream that there were three idols under the round in the Chappar village. When he woke up and dug at the place, he found three idols of Lord Krishna. One idol was taken to Mandaphia, the other to Bhadsoda and the third idol to Chapar and all three locations became temples. The temples are at a distance of 5km from each other. The Madaphiya temple was recognized as Sanwalia Ji Dham . Thousands of devotees came every day to visit the temple and attract a large number of devotees during Janmashtami time.

12. Kirti Stambh

Kirti Stambh is the tower situated in Chittorgarh fort. It is 22 feet high and constructed by Jain merchant, Jeeja Bhagerwala under the rule of Rawal Kumar Singh. The tower is seen as a holy pilgrimage for Jain devotees. Kirti Stambh is also known as the tower of the frame . The tower is dedicated to the first Jain Tirthankar, Sri Adinath. The tower has seven floors and after reaching on top tourists can have a spectacular view of the surroundings. The tower is constructed in Solanki style and attracts tourists from all over the world. The best time to visit is during winter as the heat is bearable and nights are cool. In the remaining part of the year, the temperature is very high so it is not advisable to visit during summertime. You can also book a guide to having perfect knowledge about the place. The guide is available at INR 500.

13. Ratan Singh Palace

This historical palace is located inside the Chittorgarh fort. Ratneshwar lake adds charm to the beauty of Raja Ratan Singh’s palace. The palace also includes a beautiful garden and a temple dedicated to Ratneshwar Mahadev. The flowers of the garden were also watered by maharaja Ratan Singh. On the top floor of the palace, tourists can have an astonishing view of the sunset. The palace was used for ceremonies and functions by the royal family.  This palace is a must-visit to places to visit in Chittorgarh. The palace is also famous as a haunted place as it is believed that there are spirits of the people who were killed in the fort. While the Rani Padmini palace was served in summer and Raja Ratan Singh palace was served in winter.
