Indie-Rock Band Choir Vandals Is Ready To Mix Things Up

The three members of Choir Vandals were all previously part of other St. Louis bands — bands they loved but that all broke up for various reasons. Since they formed the indie-rock band in 2013, it's become their longest running gig yet.

And now, they’re getting to perform at the Pageant on Saturday. It’ll be their first in-person performance since the start of the pandemic. And they’ll be joined by a lineup of local acts they consider longtime friends: Foxing, Lé Ponds, Parisian and MANAPOOL.

“I'm gonna be seeing so many people, so many friends, for the first time in a long time, so I'm really excited for it,” drummer Wil McCarthy explained on Thursday’s St. Louis on the Air .

Vocalist/guitarist Austin McCutchen added: “As a St. Louis musician, this is the top of the list.”

McCutchen and McCarthy talked with host Sarah Fenske about their evolving artistry, the band members’ secrets to getting along, and the joys of touring — something they miss after the pandemic stopped them in their tracks.

Before that, they toured across the country and in the United Kingdom.

“A lot of my favorite memories of just being alive have been on tour in a smelly van with three or four other guys,” McCutchen recalled. “Just getting to play your music that you wrote in St. Louis, Missouri, all over the world — there's no other feeling like it.” Even so, he reiterated, the band will likely not tour “until it's completely safe to do so.”

In the meantime, the band is working on a new album, one that feels like a new direction with more of a 1960s-’70s rock sound and “a little twang to it,” McCutchen said.

McCarthy explained: “It's always a little different, because we collaborate after Austin has a basic song idea. So when he starts coming at us with these completely off-the-wall ideas, based on what we're used to, it poses an interesting and fun challenge.

“I love that if Austin throws us a curveball, we're gonna try to hit it out of the park.”

Vocalist/guitarist Austin McCutchen says, “This record is the first opportunity we have had to really show what this band is. We poured a lot of ourselves into these songs. It’s the result of eighteen months of searching for our identity while struggling with a world that is indifferent to whether or not we exist.”

“Dark Glow” was produced by Tate Mercer (Daisyhead, Better Off) and mastered by Doug Van Sloun (Bright Eyes, Cursive, Tokyo Police Club).

Kingston High School's choir, band and orchestra join together for 'Masterworks' performance on May 16

M ay 5—KINGSTON, N.Y. — Kingston High School's choir, band and orchestra will join together in a "Masterworks" concert on Thursday, May 16, at 7 p.m. at Pointe of Praise Family Life Center, 243 Hurley Ave.

Josephine Griggs, a junior who sings in the choir and serves as its communications director, estimates the show will feature anywhere from 60 to 70 students ranging from freshmen through seniors. Featured will be the entire choir, select members of the masterwork orchestra and string orchestra and members of the school Band.

She said this year's program features much more advanced music than last year's show, which marked the first time the concert returned since the COVID-19 pandemic. As in past years, the performance will be led by longtime guest conductor David Leighton, who once worked with the Metropolitan Opera in New York City but is not retired.

Griggs said featured pieces will include Bach's "Magnificat," the "Hallelujah Chorus" and "Glory Lord." She added that the performers are very familiar with both pieces as they always do it during their holiday Mendelsohn concert.

Griggs said she feels there's been more interest in music since the pandemic.

"I think there's a lot more anticipation," she said. "People are new to band, choir and orchestra. We're all working to learn difficult parts."

She admitted the pandemic still weighs on everyone in the music department.

"There was so long where we were on the computer and were not playing together or singing together," she said. "It's been a lot of work to get us over the hump and back to where we were before."

That has included dedicating more time on rehearsals and music, according to Griggs. "It's really worth it," she added.

Lawrence Lohman, the choir's director for almost 20 years, said he feels the Kingston High Music Department came out of the pandemic exceptionally strong. "My colleagues in other schools are struggling and we came back very quickly," he added.

Lohman said he can't think of another high school in the state that does a joint project involving choir, band and orchestra like "Masterworks" offers. "It's a very unique experience," he said.

Lohman said he works closely with Leighton, who was once a piano prodigy at the Julliard School of Music, on the complex classical pieces the students perform. They include Bach, Handel, Haydn's "The Creation," Mendelsohn's "Elijah" and even operatic scenes. "The kids go down to the city and work with him, and he comes up here," Lohman added.

Soloists will return to this show for the first time since the pandemic, he said.

"These are singers who don't have microphones that have to project over an orchestra," Lohman said, "They're specially trained over an orchestra."

Lohman said the church located off Hurley Avenue is a spectacular venue for such a show. "It's the best acoustical space in Ulster County," he added. "The sound in there is phenomenal."

The choir is coming off a first-place performance in its category at the Music in the Parks program at the Six Flags Great Adventure theme park in New Jersey, according to Lohman.
