Ho ho ho! 6 Ohio towns worth visiting this Christmas season

christmas places to visit ohio

Ohio certainly has a heart for Christmas and the holidays.

There are elaborate light displays in many towns across the state.

And many of Ohio's zoos, including Akron , Columbus and Cincinnati, put lights on practically everything with the exception of the animals to make things festive and bright at night.

There are even some towns that sound so Christmassy − like Germantown, North Star and Sugar Creek − they should be a setting for a Hallmark movie

But there are a few towns in Ohio that stand out as a definite destination for Christmas travelers.

Roscoe Village, Ohio

Roscoe Village is a fully restored Ohio and Erie Canal town located in Coshocton and is like stepping back to the 1830s.

There are places to shop, eat and even drink.

But at Christmastime, the village is aglow with holiday decorations as visitors learn about holiday traditions from a bygone era shared by village residents and artisans.

There are free Christmas Candlelighting Ceremonies on Dec. 2 and 9 in the historic village.

Steubenville, Ohio

Ohio is home to what is billed as the world's largest collection of life-size nutcrackers.

These colorful creations take up residence in the Nutcracker Village in Steubenville.

There are some 200 nutcrackers on display from Nov. 21 to Jan. 6 that are the creations of local artists.

The nutcrackers depict local celebrities like native son Dean Martin and others like Sherlock Holmes, Santa and even the characters from the Wizard of Oz.

There are a variety of events in and around the town, including entertainment and outdoor markets.

For more, visit steubenvillenutcrackervillage.com .

Morrow, Ohio

The Village of Morrow, located in Warren County, is home to the popular Christmas Ranch .

This family-run Christmas attraction has been featured on "Good Morning America" and others, including HGTV.

The light display that requires an admission has more than one million lights and synchronized holiday music.

Guests walk through the displays and can visit Christmas shops, Santa's bakery and café and take a train ride.

Learn more about the Christmas Ranch, which is open through Dec. 23, at thechristmasranch.com.

Mason, Ohio

Kings Island is a place to be in the summer.

But come winter the park is transformed into a winter wonderland with more than seven million lights.

WinterFest takes over the amusement park in Mason, and for the price of an admission ticket guests can enjoy 12 winter wonderlands on select nights in November and December.

There is live entertainment, food and even a nightly parade.

The park's Royal Fountain is transformed into an ice-skating rink, and the park's replica of the Eiffel Tower is turned into a giant Christmas tree.

And weather-permitting, guests can ride 20 of the park's rides including the Mystic Timbers roller coaster.

For more, visit visitkingsisland.com .

Medina, Ohio

Medina's historic town square looks like something right out of a Christmas movie.

Its Victorian gazebo was even replicated on a float for the 2011 Rose Parade.

There are quaint shops and restaurants that are all decked out for the holidays.

But what puts Medina over the top is the Castle Noel Christmas museum .

This museum is billed as America's largest year-round Christmas attraction filled with a large collection of movie props, including the Buddy the Elf costume and props from the Grinch movie.

Cousin Eddy's actual RV used in the National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation movie is even parked there.

The museum is also home to a large collection of Christmas store window displays from New York's department stores, including Sak’s Fifth Avenue, Bloomingdale’s and Lord & Taylor.

Be sure to make reservations online for a tour as timed slots fill up fast during the holidays.

For more, visit castlenoel.com .

Cleveland, Ohio

Cleveland is home to one of the most beloved − at least by Ohioans − Christmas movies of all time.

The classic "A Christmas Story" movie that came out in 1983 was filmed − in part − in the city.

You can visit Downtown, where some of the outdoor scenes of the Christmas parade were filmed.

Downtown's Public Square is decked out for the holidays with displays you can walk past and through.

Nearby is the former Higbee Department Store where Ralphie asked Santa for his beloved Red Ryder BB gun. It's now home to the Jack Cleveland Casino .

And best yet, you can visit Ralphie's House that has been restored to look just like the sets in the movie.

Across the street is a large gift shop and museum with memorabilia from the museum.

You can even spend the night at the Bumpus House next door − sans the pack of dogs that stole the Christmas turkey.

Packing List When Searching For The Best Christmas Lights In Ohio

If you are searching, here are some tips on how to pack lightly when packing when heading to the best light displays in Ohio.

A concealed travel pouch may be one of the most important items you bring along when searching for beautiful Christmas lights.

It is always important to protect your personal information. Identity thieves are everywhere.

This unisex RFID-blocking concealed travel pouch is lightweight and comes in several colors. It has lots of organization to give you peace of mind. You can place it under your clothes next to your body to carry your ID safely.

If you have a pouch already that does not come with RFID protection, as I do, these RFID sleeves are the perfect solution.

If you are planning on taking a lot of pictures with your phone you will definitely want to consider an external charging battery . This Anker high-speed phone charging battery is the exact one I carry with me on all of my trips.

I like that it holds its charging capabilities for several uses so I do not have to worry about it while out and about, and if I forget to recharge it at night, it will still be good to go the next day.

My daughter gifted me with this FugeTek selfie stick and tripod setup for my birthday. I absolutely love it! It is made of lightweight aluminum and is so easy to use.

It has Bluetooth connectivity and is a breeze to use for taking Insta-worthy selfies at all the cool Christmas lights displays.

I never much believed in using packing cubes when traveling. That is until I tried them. Now I am hooked. These are the exact cubes I use to stay organized when I pack for a trip!

You will want to bring your own refillable water bottle with you.

I never leave home on a trip without my Bobble filtration bottle . The 18.5-ounce size is perfect for your adventures and it fits nicely in the pocket of a backpack.

The replaceable carbon filters ensure you will always have fresh water.

Perhaps you are traveling a long distance and packing space is a premium in your suitcase, or in your car. Then this collapsible silicone foldable water bottle would work well for you. Would not take up much space at all.

You will want a backpack or daypack with you to store snacks, your water bottle, phone, extra clothes, etc.. . No matter the time of day or evening.

This foldable water-resistant backpack would be great. And it comes in many different colors!

As you can see when it comes to celebrating Christmas in Ohio there are so many places to choose from.

From Christmas tree farms in Ohio to cities adorned with festive decorations Ohio offers a lot.

Whether you go to one of the drive-thru displays or walk around some of the city lights, I know they will all deliver that festive charm.

Wherever you go I hope you have an amazing time and please come back and tell me all about it.

Christmas Journey is two holiday “journeys” or “walk-through” experiences for families that share the good times of Christmas past.

A Christmas Carol transports visitors to the time of Charles Dickens, where they become part of his classic holiday story in this interactive journey. It features period holiday music, theatrical lighting, and the decor of the season. Authentic period costumes, memorable characters, and beautiful decorations greet visitors as they experience the enduring tale of Ebenezer Scrooge and Tiny Tim in a way not seen before.

Visitors are immersed in the heart of Victorian England as they enter Scrooge’s musty manor house. Here, they are met by period-costumed guides who act as storytellers on an adventure through Dickens’ tale. The guides play multiple roles in this updated version of the story and, at times, even get the guests involved in the action.

Along the journey, which takes 8-10 minutes, visitors experience the London of the early 1800s, with alleyways, wrought iron fencing, and flickering gas lights. During the journey, guests are visited by Jacob Marley and the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future (presented in a unique, fun, and unexpected fashion) as they wind their way through Scrooge’s counting house, Bob Cratchit’s home, and a cemetery with weeping willows.

Wondering where to find Santa? You’re in luck, we are tracking his sleigh and reindeer so we can give you in the inside scoop on where to find him this year.

Eat breakfast with Santa and his friends at one of these locations.

Or head out to get pictures with Santa , including details on soothing Santa events for those with special needs and even places to get photos with your pets.

The perfect tree is waiting for you at one of these local Christmas Tree Farms . Take the family on an adventure to cut down your tree or choose from one of the freshly cut trees. Plus many of the farms also offer fun activities and extra special touches.

Drive around and see the Amazing Christmas Lights . From community light displays to the neighborhood houses with thousands of choreographed Christmas lights set to music – and many are FREE!

Grab your family and head out to one of the seasonal outdoor skating rinks . Admission is typically inexpensive (and sometimes FREE) and there is a small fee to rent ice skates (assuming you don’t have a pair of your own).

When it comes to popularity, The Buckeye State has no shortage of it. Filled with popular sports teams, Midwest culinary creations, and easy road trips to everywhere in the state, it’s also filled with quirky roadside attractions to make you giggle and smile. This is our list of fourteen quirky things to visit in Ohio.

Not used as a way of showcasing the summer and winter solstices in England but instead, a field of giant corn cobs, Cornhenge, officially titled Field of Corn (with Osage Oranges Trees), in Dublin pays homage to Sam Franz and Ohio’s agriculture. Working with Ohio State University, Franz helped to create several varieties of hybrid corn, and the 109 cobs were carefully placed on the land that was used. Fashioned to look exactly like the Corn Belt Dent varietal, each six-foot-tall cob offers a different perspective on the three individual ones used as reference.

Please do me a favor and close your eyes. Think of the Amish and an Amish community. Do you see women wearing dresses and kapps, men in pants with suspenders and wide-brimmed hats, all piled into a shiny, black buggy being pulled by a chocolate-colored horse? I bet if you continue to think about it, you may even be able almost to hear the clippity-clop of the horse’s hooves.

That’s what the Amish, to us English (non-Amish), look like at first glance. But when I started to dig deeper into the community in Shipshewana, Indiana, and what it holds near and dear, what I learned was eye-opening, at the very least. My experience changed how I now see Amish folk and why I have a new respect for them and their culture.

2. Horse-Drawn Buggy ATM

Head to the opposite corner of The Spirit of ‘76 Museum in Wellington, and you’ll spy a cool piece of Americana that’s also an ATM Machine. Officially called “Ye Olde Automatic Teller Machine,” the original piece has been a delight to see since 1999. Originally built to resemble an Amish horse-drawn wagon, it was refurbished in 2015 and put back on display as a horse-drawn wagon in 2020.

Visit the famous Lakeview Cemetery in Cleveland with its 100,000 graves, and you’ll either love its serenity or steer away from one of the creepiest places in Ohio. For those who find it beautiful, the Crying Haserot Angel gravesite is worth seeing. With “The Angel of Death Victorious” sitting prominently on Francis Haserot and the family’s gravesite surrounded by beautiful marble, compliments of the statue’s bronze weathering, it looks like it’s crying black tears.

To encourage cooperation between the Native American tribes in Ohio and the white settlers, he signed the Treaty of Greenville. Created by Ralph Hemlick and installed in 1990, the 12-foot-high piece was created with native limestone that was stacked and then mortared in place.

With the honor of being the “World’s Largest Troll Collection” by the Guinness Book of World Records, The Troll Hole Museum in Alliance will not disappoint fans of the toy. Taking an abandoned building and fixing it up, owner Sherry Groom has collected the brightly-colored hair dolls since she was five years old. Today, the museum showcases over 8,000 trolls and has over 25,000 pieces of troll memorabilia. Including a Troll Hall of Fame, Troll Cave, and Scandinavian Trolls history rooms, guests come away with a newfound knowledge of the cute collectible.

This is one habit that owners wish would stop. Cats are predators; most will retain those hunting instincts even in a domestic environment. That’s why we are presented with dead mice and birds, especially in their younger years. There are conflicting stories as to why this happens. It could be that they think we’re hungry, or maybe they are just showing off. I prefer a friend’s theory that it’s a warning, and the cat says, “Feed me, or you’re next.”

6. Feline Historical Museum

As a self-professed crazy cat lady, there’s no way I could talk about quirky things to visit in Ohio without mentioning the Feline Historical Museum in Alliance. Starting in 1990 with a mere 100 books on the four-legged cuties, its library now houses over 8,500. In addition to the reference material, educational displays throughout the building trace the history of cats. If you love a good “Where’s Waldo?” hunt and search, keep an eye out for the museum’s live cats that roam around.

I’ve had the pleasure of visiting the World’s Largest Crystal Cave on Put-in-Bay Island near Sandusky, and it truly is a gem, pun intended. Located at Heineman’s Winery, it was discovered while drilling for a well on the grounds in 1897. Filled with the mineral celestite, when you tour the geode, you’ll have to traverse up and down steep stairs, but it’s worth the exercise as you’ll get a history lesson and a sample of wine included with admission.

Bellefontaine has two street accolades: “The World’s Oldest Concrete Street” and “The Shortest Street in America.” Named after one of eight U.S. Presidents hailing from Ohio, McKinley Street claims to be a mere 15 feet long, while others have stated it’s 30 feet long. Once dubbed “The World’s Shortest Street,” the city had to change its official sign when Ebenezer Place in Wick, Scotland, which came in at only six feet, nine inches long, was given the title.

9. American Sign Museum

If you think you need to go to Las Vegas to see giant neon signs, Cincinnati has you covered instead. The American Sign Museum is all about keeping commercial signs and sign-making popular by showcasing their art and history. With 20,000 feet of space spanning multiple rooms, it’s like walking through 100 years of design and technology. Opening in 2012 as the current location, owner Tod Swormsdedt has outgrown previous homes compliments of a love of Americana signs.

Ahh, the days of the gangsters. They stole and robbed and did unspeakable deeds, but their place in American history gets more popular with each passing year. One of history’s most famous gangsters, Public Enemy #1, Charles Arthur Floyd, aka Pretty Boy Floyd, was gunned down in a field outside of East Liverpool on October 22, 1934. Taken to a local mortician at Sturgis Funeral Home in the city, his death mask was made out of pottery slip and now can be seen in that same basement, although the funeral home is now a bed and breakfast.

Hit the timing right, and you may spy on an artist working on a replica carving.

If you’re familiar with painter George Surat, his masterpiece Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte will undoubtedly bring a beautiful water scene to mind. As for Topiary Park in Downtown Columbus, creator James T. Mason gets the accolade for the seven-acre recreation. In 1989, when he and his wife pitched the concept to the Ohio capitol city, James created everything from the bronze frames that make up the topiaries’ interiors but carved out the pond and created hills. With 54 people, three dogs, a cat, a monkey, and eight boats, yew trees were used for each piece.

The rock world sadly lost Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, but he was remembered on the forum via this tune. “Bridge Burning” may be a lesser-known number from this band, but it certainly has one of the best intros.

13. Dave Grohl Alley

Running parallel from Market Street in Warren, Dave Grohl Alley pays homage to Nirvana’s and Foo Fighter’s famous drummer and all-around cool dude. Grohl, born in Ohio, moved to Alexandria, VA, when very young but still has family ties to the city. With murals dedicated to the musician created by local artists, its color palette is as vibrant as the man himself. If that wasn’t enough to encourage rock fans to visit, it’s also the home to the “World’s Largest Drumsticks,” made from 23-foot-long poplar logs.

An outdoor sculpture at Willard Park in Cleveland, the Free Stamp is the “World’s Largest Rubber Stamp.” Measuring in at 28 feet 10 inches by 26 feet by 49 feet, it was commissioned by Standard Oil of Ohio in 1985.
Discussions about places to visit in Montenegro tend to begin with Kotor, and it is easy to see why. Kotor packs plenty into its relatively small borders, with a proud maritime history allied to modern cafes, restaurants, and bars, plus some of the most alluring churches in this part of the world. Stop for a romantic courtyard lunch at Pržun before taking the arduous walk up to the fortress walls, where the ultimate view of the Bay of Kotor awaits.

9 Best Places to Live in Ohio, According to Local Real Estate Experts

Here's what you need to know before moving to Ohio.

christmas places to visit ohio

aceshot/Getty Images

Ohio, with its vast river valleys, scenic rolling hills, lush state parks, UNESCO-listed sites, and top-notch entertainment, receives over 200 million visitors each year . But the Buckeye State has also emerged as an increasingly popular destination to call home, welcoming over 200,000 new out-of-state residents in 2022 , most relocating from Florida.

While everyone's reasons for putting down roots in a new place are different, several factors make Ohio a desirable place to live. The state's low cost of living, eight percent lower than the national average, and affordable housing — the median home price is $217,698 — are certainly a major draw both for young families looking for a place to settle down and retirees seeking a budget-friendly destination to spend their golden years.

And there are plenty of charming communities to consider — from peaceful small towns to bustling cities, these are the best places to live in Ohio.

"One of the best things about Dayton is that despite its size, it still has a small-town feel — you'll be greeted with a smile and polite hello no matter where you go," Dayton-based president of Irongate Inc., Realtors Rhonda Chambal said of this city of over 137,000 residents. Dayton is home to one of the largest Air Force bases in the country, employing over 30,000 people. Healthcare, defense, and education are three of the city's most important industries, with an unemployment rate of four percent , just 0.1 percent higher than the national average.

Chambal explained that the relatively low cost of living (about six percent below the national average), proximity to larger cities (Cincinnati and Columbus are about an hour away), good-rated school districts, diverse dining options, and a rich cultural scene attract people to the area.

Another major draw? According to Zillow, the median home value in Dayton is around $143,000 , over $200,000 below the national average.

With 10 percent of Cincinnati covered in parks, the third-largest city in Ohio is also one of the nation's greenest. Sports fans here have three professional teams to support, but it is art enthusiasts who probably have it best. With over two dozen top-notch museums and at least 10 performance venues and theaters, the city is an art lover's paradise.

"While most of the state is very flat, Cincinnati is set among rolling, green hills overlooking the Ohio River, offering outdoor recreation year-round and a milder climate than our northern neighbors," Steve Early, a realtor at Sibcy Cline Realtors/Luxury Portfolio International , added. "From suburbs with large yards to urban living on the streetcar line with award-winning dining only steps away, this affordable city has never been more vibrant and diverse."

Because the city is rooted in history, newcomers can find all types of homes — from historic Victorian and craftsman houses to modern apartments and urban lofts. But best of all, home values here are well below the national average — currently around $235,00, according to Zillow .

Nestled on the shores of Lake Erie, Toledo is the perfect home base for those seeking scenic waterfront views, a laid-back lifestyle, and endless outdoor recreation. The city's bustling art scene includes the world-class Toledo Museum of Art. And sports fans will thrive here — Toledo has many sports venues and a Minor League Baseball team. But most importantly, the city blends low cost of living — almost 28 percent below the national average — and affordable housing. In fact, Toledo's real estate market was ranked best in the country in 2024. Currently, median home values stand at about $116,000, also attracting many retirees on a budget .

This beautiful northeast Ohio city recently outperformed 150 urban areas nationwide and ranked first in U.S. News & World Report's list of the most affordable places to retire . Thanks to its bustling arts scene, excellent healthcare facilities, proximity to larger cities, and affordable cost of living (18 percent lower than the national average), Youngstown is an excellent place to call home, whether you're a young professional or a senior.

"On the business spectrum, Youngstown is home to several companies, including the DeBartolo Corporation, Steelite International, and Gasser Chair. Youngstown has successfully changed the narrative from 'Rust' to 'Tech Belt,' leading the way in 3D printing and additive manufacturing, thanks to our nationally recognized business incubator ," Patrick Burgan, owner and broker at Burgan Real Estate , explained.

And even though home prices are on the rise, they are still much more affordable than in other areas of the country; the median home price in the Mahoning Valley is $178,000.

If access to world-class healthcare facilities is a priority, then Cleveland should be at the top of your list. The city is home to two of the largest multi-branch medical centers in the country, The Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals, as well as several children's hospitals.

"Adding to Cleveland's appeal is that we're known for diversity and culture. University Circle is a hub for global arts, higher education, culture, and science," Janis McCormick, regional vice president of Ohio East at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services/Luxury Portfolio International , said, noting that the city's year-round cultural festivals, local craft brewery scene, and street fairs also add to its appeal with newcomers. The city is also ranked one of the best places to retire in the country , where monthly expenses don't exceed $1,700.

In terms of real estate, McCormick explained that the city offers a range of architectural styles.

"For instance, we have urban, country, and small-town settings. You can find a bungalow on the river just a short walk from the city center or a 10-acre ranch estate. We also have a lot of very neat midcentury modern homes built around the time of the Frank Lloyd era that are sprinkled throughout Cleveland," she added.

Median home values in Cleveland hover around the $100,000 mark , which makes the city one of the most affordable urban areas in the country.

To say that Columbus is booming right now would be an understatement. The city's population grew faster than any other metropolitan area in the U.S. in the second half of 2023, primarily thanks to its affordable cost of living and housing.

"It is a goldmine for anyone looking to move their career up a notch," Julie Wills, a real estate agent at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, said. "Here, you've got everything from big Fortune 500 companies to buzzing startups and a whole spectrum of industries, from tech to healthcare. Throw in top-notch schools and a vibe that's all about family, and you've got yourself more than just a place to visit."

10 percent of the city's population is aged 65 or over, which is good news for those who want to retire here, as the city also offers plenty of activities for seniors .

Home prices in Columbus have been on a steady upward trajectory for the past eight years, with no sign of slowing down. However, they are still affordable for first-time buyers. The median home price is around $240,000, and Wills explained that as values keep climbing, those who invest in property right now are looking at a "sweet return down the line."

Just like a few other places in Ohio, Akron was also recently spotlighted as a sought-after destination for retirees, but the city, which is also the birthplace of NBA superstar LeBron James, has a lot to offer families and young professionals. A beautiful parks system, excellent healthcare facilities, arts centers and museums, the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad, and a Minor League Baseball team are just some of the amenities and urban facilities that make Akron a wonderful place to live.

"Akron has grown so much over the years. Businesses are booming and people are excited to move here," Ann Kyner, vice president and regional manager at Howard Hanna Real Estate Services , said. "We have a little of everything here — from charming historic homes to colonial and ranch-style residences. Just outside our downtown area, there are communities with horses and stables. It doesn't take much of a drive beyond the city center before you find a more rural vibe, complete with equestrians riding the trails."

And while real estate prices have gone up over eight percent since last year, the median home value has remained under $130,000, according to Zillow .

If bustling Columbus is not your cup of tea, consider this mid-size town of about 50,000 just 40 miles east of Ohio's capital. Newark is undergoing a major downtown restoration, making the town even more attractive to new residents. The city is a great place for families thanks to its many parks and green spaces (the 775-acre Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve is nearby), good schools, and affordable home prices — the current median house value is $217,000, up 10 percent since last year.

Highlighted as the third-best emerging housing market in the country in a recent report by The Wall Street Journal and Realtor.com, Canton is an under-the-radar town an hour south of Cleveland. One of its most well-known landmarks is the Football Hall of Fame, but Canton is chock-full of galleries, museums, parks, and top-notch dining spots.

"Canton is very affordable and full of places for adventure and new experiences," Dominic Fonte, a real estate agent at Cutler Real Estate/Luxury Portfolio International , explained, noting that the town's neighborhoods offer a great variety of schools, amenities, and home styles such as ranches, apartments, and new construction residences.
