Tips

The Churdhar trek takes you through a picturesque trail through mountain peaks, lush valleys, forests, and meadows. Like any other trek around the Himalayas, this also requires adequate preparation and certain important things that you should keep in mind to make your expedition a smooth and memorable one.

Carry a good camera with spare batteries and memory cards as you will come across several places along your trek that are worth capturing. The additional batteries are important as you may not find many places with electricity to charge them.

Do regular physical fitness training as well as exercises for mental endurance from months before the trek as these will assist you a lot during your expedition.

Reach the base camp a few hours prior to your actual trek to acclimatize yourself with the surroundings.

Remember that the last bus from Nohradhar to Solan is at 4 pm and to Rajgarh is at around 6.30 pm. So time yourself accordingly on your return journey or you may have to spend another night at the base camp.

Carry enough cash with you and do not rely on the ATMs at Nohradhar as they are closed on Sundays and other holidays.

You can avail a direct route from Churdhar to Teesri which can save you almost 2 hours. You can learn more about this route from the locals.

Do not remove your sunglasses when in the snow.

Wear collared t-shirts with full sleeves to protect yourself from sunburn.

Opt for a headlamp instead of an LED torch as it becomes extremely easy to work in the darkness when both your hands are free.

How to Reach

You have to first reach Chandigarh from where you will head to the base camp for the Churdhar trek. Chandigarh is well connected with most metro cities in India.

By Air: The nearest airport is the Chandigarh Airport which is well connected with Delhi and other places with daily flights operated by several airlines

By road: You can take a direct road route to Chandigarh from Delhi. You can book a private cab or one of the many buses that ply between the two cities. To reach the base camp at Nohradhar from Chandigarh you can either hire a taxi or opt for the local bus service. There are several buses available at the Sector 43-ISBT at Chandigarh. From here, you take a bus to Rajgarh and then another bus directly to Nohradhar.

The best time to go on the Churdhar trek is during the summer months preferably in the month of June which is also the peak tourist season here. During this time, the weather remains pleasant and ideal for outdoor activities like camping, and trekking.

Summer season: Summer season usually starts from the months of May and June when the temperatures range between 20 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius. Winter season: Churdhar trek is very different in the winter months than it is during the summers. The level of difficulty rises several notches in the cold season especially because of the amount of snow during this time. Churdur Peak Suggested Trekking Itinerary from Nohradhar

Day 1: Reach Nohradhar - Jamnala/Teesri After overnight Journey, you can reach Nohradhar in the morning. After a small rest and breakfast, you can start your trek. Carry water some food items along with you. The trek is full of rocks as we start but after that it becomes quite easy.

Jamnala is a plain meadow where you will find couple of shops for basic supplies, you can also take night halt in Jamnala if you reach late, otherwise you can continue your journey. Teesri is around 5 kms from Jamnala, which will be our night halt campsite.

Day 2: Jamala/Teesri - Churdhar Summit - Jamala/Teesri After 1 km of rocky trail, you will pass through forests followed by meadows, which offers scenic views. After a point, there were two routes to Churdhar peak. One was a direct and shorter but steep trail of 4 kms to the Churdhar peak. Another was via the temple, which was easy but 7 kms long. It is advisable (even by locals) that one should take the longer route and visit temple before the summit.

After visiting temple, resume your trek to Summit. The summit trek is still very hard and time consuming but offers breathtaking views. Trek down to Teesri or Jamala, as per the trekking speed, timing or guide recommendation. Night stay in Camps.

Day 3: Reach Nohradhar and Departure After morning breakfast trek down to Nohradhar and Departure.

In this travel guide, we’ll embark on a virtual exploration of the Churdhar trek, delving into the trail, the spiritual sanctuaries along the way, and practical tips for an enriching adventure.

1. Overview of the Churdhar Trek:

Churdhar, also known as Churi-Chandni Dhar, is the highest peak in the outer Himalayas of the Solan district in Himachal Pradesh. The trek is approximately 18 kilometers long, offering a mix of challenges and rewards for trekkers.

2. Best Time to Visit:

The best time to undertake the Churdhar trek is during the post-monsoon and pre-winter months, from September to November. During this period, the weather is pleasant, and the landscapes are adorned with lush greenery. Winter treks are possible, but they come with the challenge of navigating through snow.

3. Planning Your Itinerary:

  • Day 1: Solan to Nohradhar (Base Camp): The journey usually begins from Solan, with a drive to Nohradhar, the base camp for the Churdhar trek.

4. The Trail:

The Churdhar trek trail is known for its diverse landscapes and gradual ascent:

  • Nohradhar to Jamnala: The trek begins with a gentle ascent through oak and pine forests, leading to the meadows of Jamnala.
  • Jamnala to Churdhar Temple: As trekkers progress, the trail becomes steeper, leading through rhododendron-filled forests and vast alpine meadows. The final stretch involves a steep ascent to the Churdhar Temple.

5. Essentials to Pack:

  • Footwear: Sturdy trekking shoes with good grip are essential for navigating varied terrains, especially during steep ascents.
  • Clothing: Wear layers suitable for changing temperatures, including thermal wear for colder conditions. A windproof and waterproof jacket is advisable.
  • Backpack: Carry a comfortable and spacious backpack with essentials such as water, snacks, a first aid kit, and extra clothing.

  • Jamnala Meadows: The expansive meadows of Jamnala, adorned with vibrant wildflowers during the summer months, offer a tranquil setting for trekkers to rest and rejuvenate.
  • Panoramic Views: The summit provides panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges, including the peaks of Kedarnath, Badrinath, and the Gangetic plains.

8. Challenges and Considerations:

While the Churdhar trek is accessible to trekkers of moderate fitness levels, certain challenges should be considered:

  • Gradual Ascent: The trek involves a gradual ascent, making it suitable for trekkers of varying fitness levels. However, basic fitness is advisable.
  • Weather Conditions: Weather in the mountains can be unpredictable. Trekkers should be prepared for sudden changes in weather, including rain or snow.

9. Local Cuisine and Culture:

The villages surrounding Churdhar offer a glimpse into the local Himachali culture. Trekkers can savor local Himachali cuisine, known for its robust flavors and use of mountain ingredients. Interacting with the locals adds a cultural dimension to the trek.

10. Safety Tips:

  • Guides and Local Support: Engage local guides who are familiar with the terrain. Their expertise enhances safety and provides valuable insights into the region’s history and folklore.
  • Group Trekking: Trekking in a group enhances safety. If trekking solo, inform someone about your itinerary.
  • Emergency Contacts: Carry emergency contact numbers and be aware of the nearest medical facilities.
  • Leave No Trace: Adhere to the principles of responsible trekking by carrying back all waste and minimizing environmental impact.

11. Conclusion:

Whether you are a seasoned trekker seeking panoramic views or a pilgrim on a quest for divine blessings, Churdhar offers an experience that transcends the ordinary. As you stand atop the summit, surrounded by the grandeur of the Himalayas, you become part of a sacred tapestry that weaves together nature, spirituality, and the rich cultural heritage of Himachal Pradesh. Churdhar Trek: A Stunning and Remarkable Himalayan Trek

Churdhar Trek: A Stunning and Remarkable Himalayan Trek

The Churdhar Trek is located in Himachal Pradesh, not far from Chandigarh and Churdhar Mountain. It is at 3655 meters and is the highest peak within the Himalayan range.  Another name for this range is Churi-Chandni-Dhar. The area is named for Shri Chureshwar or Shirgul Maharaj because residents think that they formerly resided there.

Himachal news

The Churdhar Trek in Himachal Pradesh brings you to the Churdhar Top, named after ShriChureshwar or ShirgulMaharaj. He was thought to have lived here in ancient times. The peak is also known as Churi-Chandni-Dhar. Due to its connection to “ShriChureshwarMaharaj,” Churdhar is revered as holy and home to many temples.

The iconic Himalayan peaks, including Kinner Kailash, Shrikhand Mahadev, Kedarnath , and Badrinath, are visible from the top. This journey, snaking through numerous landscapes, is a treat for its travelers. The initial half of the trip is up a steep slope, and the last four hours are through rainy weather. However, the most impressive part of this trek is, without a doubt, the Churdhaar nature refuge. Beautiful wildlife like the Himalayan Black Bear, Musk deer Lanhur, and other species pose a threat to this refuge.

  • Discover Churdhar peak’s greatest attributes.
  • Discover Churdhar Wildlife Sanctuary’s magnificence.
  • First, learn about the significance of the local mythology surrounding this destination.
  • Then, see the far-off peaks visible from the top in a panoramic picture.

The Scheduling

In essence, you will reach three peaks:

  • 2,175 m Nauradhar
  • 2,855m Jam Nallah
  • 3,655 m Churdhar

One of the following routes will bring you to Nauradhar, where you will spend the night at the base camp before beginning the hike.

churdhar trek opening date

Day 1: Your trip from Nauradhar to Jam Nallah will begin at 6 am. You should wear appropriate trekking shoes because the trail is rocky and hilly. Reaching the peak will take you three to four hours. There, you can find a few dhabas and shops where you can buy food and other necessities.

Then, you will walk from Jam Nallah to Teesri, which is very simple with a well-defined track and takes you about 2 hours to finish. Along the way, you will see various lovely water streams.

Day 2: Day 2 of the walk will take you from Teesri to Churdhar, which is the hardest part of the whole journey. You should finish it in four hours or so.

Two paths lead to the Churdhar peak; one is a 4 km trail that gets you to the peak directly where the Lord Shiva temple resides. And the other is a 7 km trail that takes you via the temple and is less steep.

Day 3: The following morning, at around 8 am, you begin your descent toward Nauradhar. The journey back to the base will take about 5 to 6 hours. Then, you can board the 5:00 pm bus to Solan or another neighboring city where you want to return.

The Ideal Time to Visit

Although there is a different season to visit Churdhar, it is recommended to go on the journey between May and November, when the peaks are stunningly covered with snow. Temperatures in June and July range from 20°C to 28°C, with an average of 55mm of precipitation. Most tourists are present during this time of year. Your decision will rely on the experiences you want to have.

Roads are covered in snow from the end of December to the beginning of March, making it unsafe to attempt the Churdhar trek during these times of low visibility.

Churdhar Trek Overview

The Churdhar trek is the highest in the outer Himalaya region. The peak is also famous by Churi Chandani Dhar's name and is named after a great ancient Indian emperor Shri Chureshwar. The view from the top of the peak is unbelievable, and it feels like you are standing above the clouds. There are various Himalayan peaks visible from the top, and those peaks are – Kinner Kailash, Shrikhand Mahadev, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Swargarohini, Bandarpoonch, and some others. From the top point, other visible, beautiful places are – The Gangetic basin, Kufri, Kasauli, Shimla, Sutlej River, and chakrata. There are three different routes for reaching the summit, but the one called Nauradhar is the most popular among all 3. The very first km of the trek might be pretty tricky for a few beginners as the route compromises rocky and muddy landscape, and the way is a little steep. But it would be fine and get back to normal once you reach thick forests of pine trees, which take us to beautiful meadows.

8-km road from Nohradhar to cut long trek to Churdhar peak by 6 km

Construction by himachal pwd likely to be completed by july 2024 ..

churdhar trek opening date

Not only it’s a long trek to the enchanting Churdhar peak famous for the temple of local deity Shirgul Devta in Himachal’s Sirmaur district but also it’s been a bumpy road all these years for the local villagers and tourists, especially those taking the Nohradhar route. But the arduous 18-km walk from the town (Nohradhar) to the peak will be smoothened and the distance reduced by 6 km if Himachal PWD plans go as scheduled. The public works department is constructing a 8-km-long road, the completion of which will shorten the distance to the peak by 6 km.

Those coming from Chandigarh and Delhi NCR, the shortest and popular route recommended to this peak – a revered hill situated on the elevation of 3,467 metres – is from Nohradhar (in Sirmour district).

churdhar trek opening date

The construction of the 8-km-long and 7-metre-wide road was started in December 2022 and is likely to be completed by July 2024. Almost 60% of the work has been completed. It is likely to be developed into a motorable road by next year.

Interestingly, the proposal to construct this 8-km patch was first made in 2005, but it hit a roadblock due to fund shortage. Also, the area through which the road is being built was owned by villagers who gifted small chunks of their land to the government.

Over the years Churdhar peak has become a favourite trekking spot. Thousands of tourists trek through the steep and bumpy patch every year. A giant statue of Lord Shiva is also installed atop the hill which is an added attraction for the devout. Both local devotees and those from far-flung places across the country throng this place for religious purpose.

Festive offer

Churdhar peak is the highest peak in the outer Himalayas. It gives a panoramic view of snow-laden peaks of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. As per the record, George Everest, the first Surveyor General of India, had made many accurate astronomical readings and sightings of Himalaya mountains around 1834 from Churdhar peak.

“Almost 60% of the road construction work has been completed. It’s around 8-km-long and 16-metre-wide – a patch starting from Nohradhar to the last point Chardhar village. Once the road is completed, the overall distance to reach Churdhar peak will reduce by almost 6 km. It means – the first leg of the traditional trek, which is very steep and starts from Nohradhar, need not be covered. People can reach Chardhar village in motor vehicles. As of today, the steep trek starts from Nohradhar town. The road construction work could have been completed earlier had the recent incessant rain not got in the way. Many parts of the 8-km-long road were washed away in the rain. Heavy snowfall starts from November and it continues till March and that’s also a matter of concern here. Indeed, the road will be motorable by next year, although it’s an uphill task. The hills have to become stable for this. This process takes time because these hills are fragile,” Nitish Sharma, Assistant Engineer, PWD, Nohradhar, told The Indian Express .

Arvind Kumar, Superintendent Engineer (SE), PWD, Nohradhar, says, “Indeed, there is a proposal to build a ropeway from the point where the new road will end – up to the Churdhar peak, but not sure when the work will start and when it will get over. The under-construction stretch will be a rural road which will primarily benefit the local villagers, besides boosting tourism. The trek is vertical. The overall length of the road is 8 km. The road will shorten the distance by 6 km, that is, the long trek on foot.”

A visit at Nohradhar shows JCB machines, poclain machines clearing the passage and drilling the huge boulders which had fallen from the surrounding mountains. The under-construction road passes through at least 100 houses scattered in two villages – Chardhar and Khantio – situated on the outskirts of Churdhar Wildlife Sanctuary where any construction is prohibited.

punjab

Joginder Ram, a resident of Nohradhar and member of Churdhar Sewa Samiti, says, “The proposal of this 8-km-long road was made long ago. It has been in the pipeline since 2005. At that time tenders were allotted, but later they were cancelled due to shortage of funds. This time tenders were allotted successfully and the work got started. Trekkers, tourists coming from far-flung areas are the secondary beneficiaries of this road. The first beneficiaries will be the rural folk. People used to ferry their sick relatives in makeshift stretchers on their shoulders to reach Nohradhar. The area through which the road is being constructed was owned by villagers who gifted small chunks of their land to the government.” Joginder Ram was among many villagers who also gifted his land for the construction of road.

A Himachal Pradesh forest officer requesting anonymity says, “Churdhar Wildlife Sanctuary – spread in 56.16 sq km area – is a protected area where constructions are prohibited. Indeed, the temple premises of revered Shirgul Devta is in the sanctuary, but the construction of the temple was also allowed within a particular area.”

It is expected that many commercial activities primarily focused on tourists will shift automatically from Nohradhar to the last point where the road ends. At the same time, the prices of the surrounding land near Chardhar and Khantio have also shot up.

“Since the road construction started, people from Nohradhar, who are running hotels, ‘dhabas’, shops offering trekking equipment and others, have started approaching us offering handsome prices for our land which was earlier considered not-worthy. Once the price of one bigha was merely Rs 14,000, but now it has shot up to Rs 8 lakh. It is understood that once the road is built, tourists will prefer to reach the last point of the concrete road, instead of halting 8 km back at Nohradhar. I have 5 bigha land, but I turned down all the tempting offers. I know I will lose my equity if I sell my land,” Rajesh (54), a small farmer of Khantio village, told The Indian Express.

Sumit Khimta, Deputy Commissioner, Sirmour, said, “The road construction work is under PWD wing of Himachal Pradesh. The road will connect Nohradhar to far-away villages.”
