The Tattoo has a proud history stretching back almost seven decades. Following the production of ‘Something About a Soldier’ in the Ross Bandstand in 1949, it was decided to create an event which ran alongside the existing Edinburgh Festivals. The official Tattoo was duly created with its first performance in 1950.

As it makes its return to the Edinburgh Castle Esplanade in 2022 with a new show titled  Voices’,  The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo will celebrate the power of connection with a spectacular combination of music, dance and military precision from some of the world’s leading armed forces and cultural performers.

For 2022, the Army is confirmed as the lead service. You can enjoy the legendary sound of the Massed Pipes and Drums that will echo around the Esplanade as part of  Voices , supported by Tattoo pipers and drummers, and musicians from UK Military Regiments.  You will be pleased to know that the Tattoo dancers and Shetland fiddlers will also join the line-up, with international acts and further details about  Voices  announced in the coming months.

Memorable moments:         - 2012 marked the 65 th Anniversary of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo - 2005 saw one of the largest gatherings of pipes and drums in the event's history - 1968 was the first year when The Tattoo was seen in colour on TV - The first Lone Piper was Pipe Major George Stoddart - 1952 the first overseas regiment, Band of the Royal Netherlands Grenadiers participated       

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo  never ceases to amaze and 2024 will be no exception.

You'll get to see some of the very best pipe bands from across the globe such as the award-winning Royal Scots Dragoon Guards and the Royal Highland Fusiliers, providing heart-stopping sights and sounds for the whole family to enjoy. Marvel at the dare-devil motorcycle routines and enjoy a kaleidoscope of music, dance and breath-taking re-enactments of international battles.

The show's finale is probably one of the best, if not sombre, moments of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo as silence again takes over the arena as the 'Evening Hymn' is sung, the sounding of the 'Last Post' and the lowering of the flags. All eyes are then drawn to the Castle ramparts where the Lone Piper plays his haunting lament before a colourful display of fireworks illuminates the skies and voices unite to sing  'Auld Lang Syne'.

What to pack Brolly, camera and a fleece or jumper as it can get cold in the evenings. Might also be worth taking a few sweets, snacks and a drink to have during the military spectacular. Also, don’t forget to double-check that you have your Edinburgh Tattoo tickets in your bag – you won’t want to be refused entry when you’re there!

What to wear The wonderful British weather can be temperamental at the best of times but hopefully when you visit it will be a glorious summers evening. It might be worth considering the worse and have a brolly on standby as well as warm clothing as the evenings can get chilly! There is a bit of an uphill climb to Edinburgh Castle where the event takes place so comfortable shoes are a must.

Before you go Might be worth checking the weather forecast on TV to see what it will be like for the evening that you see the Edinburgh Tattoo. This will help in deciding what to wear for the evening. The Tattoo has never been cancelled due to bad weather and in August it tends to be quite pleasant with a gentle breeze blowing from the west. Still check the forecast though – just in case!

Etiquette The Edinburgh Military Tattoo is one of Scotland’s biggest & best-selling spectacles in the calendar and attracts an audience of 217,000 people each year. With this in mind, do not disturb the enjoyment of others with your mobile going off at inopportune times, make sure it’s switched off or turned to silent before the show begins.

Where do you queue? There is only one queue to get into the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo and that starts at Johnston Terrace, round the hub to the Castle. It is wise to follow instructions given by the local police and security staff who will make sure you get into the Tattoo safely and on time. If travelling by coach, be prepared for a short walk uphill to the Castle Esplanade as unfortunately coaches cannot park any closer to the event.

When does it start and how long does it last? Doors open 45 minutes before the start of the performance and spectators are advised to be seated 15 minutes before it all begins. Personal belongings and baggage will be subject to a search. The event lasts for approx. 1.5 hours.

Things to be aware of It is worth remembering that Edinburgh Castle and the surrounding areas are extremely popular with tourists and can get quite congested so do allow yourself plenty of time to enable you to get through the crowds and to your seat at the Tattoo. Also try to avoid performances where TV recordings take place (12-16 Aug 2013) as the camera gear can get in the way of your enjoyment of the event.

Access to the Tattoo The location of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo may present some access difficulties for some. There is a short walk of 80 metres up a steep incline along an old cobbled path to the Esplanade. Once in the venue, you will be required to walk a further 60 metres followed by a dozen or so steps to get to the front rows of all the spectator stands. All seating at the Edinburgh Tattoo is quite steeply tiered.

Is it wheelchair friendly? There are facilities to accommodate wheelchairs at all performances of the Edinburgh Tattoo. All patrons in a wheelchair are required to be accompanied by an able-bodied person. There are disabled toilet facilities located on the Esplanade. Wheelchair spaces are located at the front of Sections 1-5 and 12-17 as well as at the top of Section 10.

Vehicle Passes You are only allowed to transport wheelchair patrons onto the Esplanade if you have a Vehicle Pass. The area must be cleared at least 60 minutes prior to the start of the performance. The Vehicle Pass does not allow you to park on or near the Esplanade. You are required to report to St Giles Street approx. 100 minutes before the performance to be guided by the Police onto the Esplanade. You will need to apply for a pass at the same time as ordering tickets for the event.

What not to miss With so much going on at the Edinburgh Military Tattoo, it can be easy to miss something vital especially if you need to nip to the loo! You definitely won’t want to miss the fireworks display at the end of the Tattoo on Saturdays (selected dates), the Lone Piper playing on the Castle Ramparts , massed pipes & drums from the Scottish regiments as well as the popular Top Secret Swiss Drum Corps.

What else can you do in Edinburgh? Whilst in Edinburgh you can hit the shops in Princes Street , enjoy street entertainment along The Royal Mile , have a drink and maybe sample some haggis in one of many quaint pubs in the city. If you’re short of time and want to see as much of Edinburgh as possible, such as Holyroodhouse, Jenners Department Store as well as the Old and New town, hop on a sightseeing bus for a whistle-stop tour of the main sights!

Full Tour Itinerary

From Edinburgh, we head for The Kelpies. During our stop, we'll be able to get up close to these towering horse-head sculptures, which celebrate the role that heavy horses played in Scotland's industrial past.  

Next, we head northwards and pass Stirling with views of its impressive Castle, the Wallace Monument and the Ochil Hills beyond.

Then it’s into the Highlands through the scenic beauty of the Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park , once home to the infamous cattle thief and rogue,  Rob Roy MacGregor . We’ll hear tales of his adventures as we make our way through the sprawling Strathyre Forest.

Next, follow the shoreline of beautiful Loch Earn before stopping in Crieff to visit Scotland’s oldest whisky distillery. On your visit to Glenturret , you will learn how the ‘water of life’ is made, and you can sample a wee dram for yourself.

There will also be time for a leisurely lunch in the distillery’s award-winning restaurant.

Explore the peaceful  Hermitage and take a short woodland walk to see the spectacular Black Linn Falls on the River Braan.

Next, stop in Dunkeld with its spectacular cathedral on the banks of the River Tay before returning south through Highland Perthshire and through the ancient Kingdom of Fife. You’ll get amazing views of the Forth Bridge as we make our way back to Edinburgh. 

Back in Edinburgh, you will have free time to have dinner and explore the city before making your own way to Edinburgh Castle.

Tell me what the visit to a whisky distillery will be like?

A visit to a traditional whisky distillery is a feast for all the senses. After a warm welcome you’ll normally have a short audio/visual presentation on the the history of the distillery and the traditional methods used in the distilling process.

Next is a tour of the distillery where you you will experience all stages of the whisky making process from mashing and fermenting to distilling and maturation.

Your tour will end with a tutored tasting of a malt whisky and the opportunity to buy a souvenir of your visit in the distillery shop.

The group size is normally between 16 and 33 passengers, however at times of peak demand larger coaches may be used.

Mid-to-late morning, you'll be treated to a coach transfer into the centre of the city, where you can shop, sightsee and explore this historic city.

In the evening you'll enjoy included entry to the world-renowned Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Following our pick-up this morning, we will travel to Belfast for the 11:30hrs Stena ferry to Cairnryan. We will travel towards Ayr where we will have a comfort break before the next stage of our journeytowards Glasgow. This year we will be staying at the 3 star-Best Western Garfield House Hotel. Our estimated time of arrival at our hotel is 17:30hrs. Time to settle in before our evening meal.

Depart Hotel 10:30hrs Friday 9th August & Thursday 22nd August It will be a long day today, so we recommend comfortable shoes. We’ll travel into Edinburgh where we will spend the full day in the city centre with free time to enjoy theatmosphere and festival activities. Due to strict parking regulations at this busy time please listen carefully as our driver gives instructions ofwhat time and exactly where in the city we must rejoin the coach (usually Waterloo Place at 18:45). We must then travel to a dedicated parking area (usually Chambers Street) for the evening where we willdisembark. The coach must remain here until the conclusion of the Tattoo. Please ensure you return tothis point after the event tonight. Time then to join the throng of visitors all making their way up to the Castle for the 21:30hrs show.

NOTE: We do not return to the hotel until after the show. Dinner is not included tonight.

Depart Hotel 10:00hrs As we begin our journey homeward bound, we will travel towards the outskirts of Ayr. We will have a comfort break at Dobbies Garden Centre – a convenient location which offers restaurantand toilet facilities. We will then resume our journey to Cairnryan where we will check in for the 15:30hrs ferry home to Belfast and it’s time to say our good-byes. NB: Your driver will confirm/ amend departure times as necessary for the duration of the tour.

The Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a spectacle of music, light and precision movement performed by the massed pipes and drums of the Scottish Regiments and military units from all over the world. Steep rocks form a dramatic backdrop to the Tattoo’s castle setting and, when subtle lighting picks out the lone piper playing a lament from the ramparts, few in the audience fail to be moved by the atmosphere. NB Access to the Tattoo is via a steep gradient, which may be a problem for people with walking difficulties.

An unhurried drive north with a convenient lunch stop en-route.

After breakfast we first make our way to the Ocean Terminal at Leith for a visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia. Home to the British Royal Family for over 40 years, where we can follow in their footsteps as we explore this floating Royal residence with a fascinating audio tour. From here we head inland visiting the unique sight of The Kelpies, the world’s largest, equine sculptures which are monumental tributes to the horsepower heritage vital to the early industries of central Scotland

After a relaxing morning in our hotel, we make our way to Edinburghto enjoy a guided tour of the city and see some of the many famous sights. Enjoy dinner in the heart of Edinburgh before we visit the renowned spectacle of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

The university town of St. Andrews and the East Fife fishing villages are our destinations today. Discover the cathedral and castle ruins before we continue to Crail and Anstruther, before returning via the delightfully named Pittenweem and St. Monans.

We return home with a convenient lunch stop en-route.

Join us as we visit one of the world’s most spectacular shows, staged at the equally spectacular and inspiring Edinburgh Castle. The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is a truly remarkable and internationally-acclaimed event which incorporates the unforgettable music of the massed pipes and drums, the massed military bands, as well as imaginative graphics, state-of-the-art lighting, singers, dancers and many other performers from around the world. We have secured tickets for Friday night’s performance which means we can spend the afternoon in Edinburgh to sightsee at leisure. A leisurely ride to the shores of Loch Lomond ends this brief visit to Scotland.

People with walking difficulties must be aware that access to the seating at the Tattoo is via steep stone steps with no lift access.

Day 1: Journey to Scotland

On the first day of your trip, you'll step aboard a comfortable coach at your chosen local joining point and sit back and relax as you travel to Scotland and on to your hotel. We make our way to the charming and popular Hotel Rob Roy, in Aberfoyle (or similar), well located and within easy coaching distance of Edinburgh. Upon arrival, enjoy a delicious evening meal at the hotel's on-site restaurant, where you'll be treated to a variety of mouthwatering dishes made with fresh, local ingredients.

Day 2: Edinburgh-Edinburgh Tattoo

After a leisurely breakfast and a relaxing start to the day, you'll have the afternoon to explore Edinburgh at your own pace. Mid-to-late morning, you'll be treated to a coach transfer into the centre of the city, where you can shop, sightsee and explore this historic city.

In the evening you'll enjoy included entry to the world-renowned Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Marvel at the stunning performances and breathtaking displays of music and dance as you take in this once-in-a-lifetime event. After the show, you'll be returned to your hotel where the remainder of the evening is at leisure before a restful night's sleep.

Day 3: Scotland to home.

Over one thousand performers from throughout the Commonwealth will offer up a fantastic show against the stunning backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.

On day two, there's and included full day excursion to Edinburgh where you can explore the historic city centre and enjoy the festival atmosphere. We will then transfer you to Edinburgh Castle* for the highlight of your holiday, the Edinburgh Military Tattoo - a truly amazing sight and sound spectacular which will include traditional pipes and drums, Highland dancers, intricate displays by cavalry and military dog teams and much more.

The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo is an annual series of military tattoos performed by British Armed Forces, Commonwealth and international military bands, and artistic performance teams on the Esplanade of  Edinburgh Castle in the capital of Scotland. The event is held each August as one of the Edinburgh Festivals. This is a spectacular, and an experience not to be missed.
