Disneyland-Motor-Boat-Cruise-to-Gummi-Glen-(1991)

1991's Motor Boat Cruise to Gummi Glen .

Motor Boat Cruise was an attraction at Disneyland in Anaheim, California which opened in 1957 on the border of Fantasyland and Tomorrowland . The waterways of the Motor Boat Cruise shared space with other attractions such as the Viewliner train and bridges for Junior Autopia .

History [ ]

The design of the boats appears very similar to those illustrated in a "Boat Ride Apparatus" patent filed by Edgar A. Morgan and Karl W. Bacon, of Arrow Development . Arrow Development was involved in the design of many attractions at Disneyland between 1953 and 1973 .

Major changes took place in 1959 to the three attractions in the area. The Viewliner and its railroad track were gone. Instead, the elevated beam of the new Disneyland Alweg Monorail curved overhead. The new Fantasyland Autopia and an expanded Tomorrowland Autopia replaced the Junior Autopia. The lagoon which had once been home to the Phantom Boats was used for the Submarine Voyage but the Motor Boat Cruise remained.

In 1991 , as part of the Disney Afternoon Avenue event, the Motor Boat Cruise became the Motor Boat Cruise to Gummi Glen . Plywood characters from Disney’s animated television series Adventures of the Gummi Bears made Gummiberry Juice along the waterway.

On January 11 , 1993 , the Motor Boat Cruise closed permanently, in part due to the negative reactions to the Gummi Bears overlay, as well as the necessity of its operating budget for the nearby Mickey's Toontown . On September 4 , 2001 , an attraction considered by Walt Disney Imagineering to be the true successor to the Motor Boat Cruise, Aquatopia , opened at Tokyo DisneySea in Japan.

Is there a child in your life who wants to be the captain of a boat? Then Yesterland has a ride for you. It’s the Motor Boat Cruise , a voyage past attractive landscaping, including flowering trees, bushes, and beautifully arranged rocks.

Perhaps you were expecting show scenes along the waterways, possibly featuring characters from animated Disney movies or television shows. Sorry. There’s none of that—unless you wait until 1991.

Pier for loading, with unloading on the other side.

It’s now your turn to board a genuine motorboat. The single bench seat is perfect for two adults and one or two small children. The large steering wheel is in the middle, so everyone has access to it.

There are floating channel markers to provide guidance, but are you sure you want to trust a young child to steer? The waterway includes treacherous looking rapids, with boats missing dangerous rocks by just a couple of feet. There are also Monorail pylons and steep embankments.

Don’t worry. The boats are on a track. The steering wheel is just as useful as on Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride . In other words, it doesn’t do anything.

So just sit back and enjoy the ride. Wave to the kids driving Autopia cars. And try to figure out whether the gas pedal on the floor is any more functional than the steering wheel. (It does seem to make the boat’s engine somewhat louder.)

Okay, so it’s not the best ride in the park—but what else were you going to do with that “B” Ticket ?

At Disneyland, the Motor Boat Cruise opened in June 1957 on the border of Fantasyland and Tomorrowland, sharing space with other attractions. As Viewliner trains went speeding by, young motorists crossed the waterways on Junior Autopia bridges.

In 1959, almost everything changed in the corner of Disneyland where the Motor Boat Cruise , Junior Autopia , and the Viewliner had been. The Viewliner and its little railroad track were eliminated. Instead, the elevated beam of the new Disneyland Alweg Monorail curved gracefully overhead. The new Fantasyland Autopia and an expanded Tomorrowland Autopia replaced the Junior Autopia . The original Tomorrowland Lagoon, which had been home to the Phantom Boats from 1955 to 1956, was rebuilt as the crystal clear lagoon of the Submarine Voyage .

Instead of joining the Viewliner and the Junior Autopia as mere memories, the Motor Boat Cruise survived.

Mickey’s Toontown, “Opening January 1993”

Although the Motor Boat Cruise survived the 1959 reconfiguration of Tomorrowland, it didn’t survive the 1993 opening of Mickey’s Toontown a few hundred yards away. The word on the internet was that to control overall park operating expenses, the operating budget for the Motor Boat Cruise had been reallocated to Mickey’s Toontown. So, on January 11, 1993, the Motor Boat Cruise closed permanently.

Remnants of old canals

After the Motor Boat Cruise closed, Disneyland gave the loading pier and landscaped grounds a new name: Fantasia Gardens. The canopy that once provided shade to guests waiting for the ride now provided shade to guests enjoying food from Fantasyland counter-service and outdoor vending locations—or just taking a break from the crowds of Disneyland.

In 2008, the loading pier became one of Disneyland Park’s three designated smoking areas. It made a particularly good one—providing a pleasant, shaded outdoor space for smokers, while being easy for nonsmokers to avoid.

Long before Disneyland eliminated all smoking within the park in 2019, the pier had reverted to nonsmoking. That made sense due to the 2009 opening of Edelweiss Snacks nearby.

Canal to nowhere

For years, the waterways sat unused, seemingly ready for a new ride with new boats and new show scenes.

Anyone still hoping that a new ride could reuse the old Motor Boat Cruise infrastructure will be disappointed to learn that’s no longer possible. There have been too many changes, eliminating much of the canal route, especially when the Fantasyland Autopia and Tomorrowland Autopia were combined and reconfigured to become the Autopia Presented by Chevron .

It’s amazing that the Motor Boat Cruise , a low-key little ride from 1957, survived almost 36 years.

Ultimate Guide to the Boats of Walt Disney World

by Mickey Blog · July 17, 2018

Riverboat Disney World

You’ve doubtlessly boarded several boats if you’ve ever visited Walt Disney World Resort. Pirates of the Caribbean and Living With the Land’s attraction vessels definitely count, but those types of boats run on tracks and don’t require a captain…but they are certainly boats! Have you opted to take the boat to Magic Kingdom instead of the monorail? Have you taken a boat from The Contemporary to The Polynesian? How about one from Epcot to Hollywood Studios? The attraction boats have a big job: make sure the guests are transported into whatever story is being told, that’s a huge task! Believe it or not though, these other boats have an arguably bigger job: transport guests TO and FROM the magic, as fast and comfortably as possible! The water transportation is so often overshadowed by busses and monorails that it is about time they, and their trusty captains, got the recognition they deserve! Here’s your ultimate guide to the Boats of Walt Disney World!

Water Launches

Believe it or not, there are 5 vastly different types of boats that run daily all across Walt Disney World Resort, and they are meant for one purpose and one purpose alone: to get you from point A to point B quickly, comfortably, and absolutely free of charge. The Water Launches patrol the lake that connects Disney’s Polynesian Village, Disney’s Grand Floridian, Disney’s Contemporary, Disney’s Fort Wilderness and Wilderness Lodge , and the Magic Kingdom. These vessels are easily recognizable by two distinct features: they are the smallest of the water craft and they are the lowest to the water. You can catch one of the Water Launches from any of the above ports and you’ll soon be off on your leisurely yet speedy journey to your destination!

Motor Cruiser

The motor cruisers patrol the waterway that connects Bay Lake to Seven Seas Lagoon and takes passengers from Fort Wilderness Resort and Campgrounds to the Magic Kingdom from well before the park opens ‘till after closing. Contrary to the Motor Launches, these boats are HUGE! Their jutting, pointed bows are the giveaway for these gigantic water taxis, and their massive scope is best highlighted when you see one of these babies docked next to a seemingly puny Water Launch! Even if you aren’t staying at the Wilderness Lodge Resort area, a tour on this watercraft takes you over a man-made water bridge that is totally worth the trip! Their size is only rivaled by that of the Magic Kingdom Ferry.

Magic Kingdom Ferry Boats

Speaking of those Magic Kingdom Ferries, they’re the next up on our watercraft tour of Walt Disney World! If you’ve ever chosen to ride the Ferry instead of the Monorail, you know just how many people these boats can accommodate on a single journey. Have you ever worried that hundreds upon hundreds of passengers boarded the boats ahead of you and you’d have to wait for the next boat? Me too, but I bet that you too fit on that boat as each one can hold up to 600 guests at a time! Each of the Ferries are unique, and next time you ride, make sure to check out the history behind the name of your vessel- there are plaques and photos inside each one describing the person from which the boat derived its name!

River Cruisers

After a long, hot day of walking in the Parks, I love to spend my evenings at Disney Springs ! One of my favorite things to do is to walk through the Springs at night without an agenda and pop in and out of different restaurants, shops, and bars as my travel buddies’ hearts desire…but at the end of a day in the Disney Parks, walking is often the last thing I want to do! That is where the River Cruisers come in to save the day! If you’ve been to Disney Springs and looked out over the water, you’ve doubtlessly seen the flat, ferry-looking boats that chug their way across the vast and gorgeous waterways. Not only are these boats great for weary feet that want to make it from the West Side to the Marketplace, they are the boats that connect Disney Springs with Saratoga Springs and the Port Orleans Resorts!

Friendship Boats

Inside Epcot, all across Crescent Lake, and down the river to Hollywood Studios is where you can board the indoor-only Friendship Boats. Save for the Motor Cruisers, these are the only boats that offer indoor (aka air conditioned) seating- which is exactly what the doctor orders on a hot and sticky Central Florida afternoon! The boats connect the Boardwalk, Yacht and Beach Clubs, Swan and Dolphin, Epcot, and Hollywood Studios. Phew…that’s a lot of ground- or should I say water- to cover! When you’ve got a boat responsible for covering that much open water that weights as much as the Friendship Boats do…it’s no wonder it takes almost 25 mins for the boat to make it from Epcot to Hollywood Studios! You can also find the Friendship Boats inside Epcot- they’re the handy cruisers that make the trip from World Showcase Plaza to the heart of World Showcase an easy breezy experience!

Transportation Cards

If you’re as interested and intrigued by the different boats of Walt Disney World as I am, you’ll definitely want to start collecting Transportation Cards! If you’ve never heard of them before, you can read up on the whole experience here  and join in on the fun the next time you visit ! All you have to do is ask your Captain for a card, and you’re well on your way to starting a great collection! Who has ridden every single one of the Walt Disney World boats? Let us know in the comments, we can’t wait to hear all about your experiences!

Meet Tradewinds, the New Motor Cruiser at Walt Disney World

by Kyle Johnson | Oct 7, 2021 | Walt Disney World News , WDW Blog

walt-dinsey-world-tradewinds-motor-cruiser-boat-rear-featured_disney-parks-blog

There’s just something so magical about taking a motor cruiser boat during your stay at WDW. This month, just in time for The World’s Most Magical Celebration , Walt Disney World is adding a new motor cruiser to its fleet called Tradewinds .

[metaslider id=”50088″]

Transportation Cast Members Crucial to Tradewinds Development

@disneyparks Welcome to the motor cruiser fleet Tradewinds! 🛥 #Disney #DisneyParks #DisneyWorld #DisneyCastLife #Transportation #MickeyMouse #WaterCraft ♬ original sound – Disney Parks

According to WDW Resort Public Affairs Manager Meghan Caprez, the name Tradewinds comes from Walt Disney Imagineering and watercraft Cast Members . It’s a reference to the trade winds that blow across the equator—fitting given that motor cruisers shuttle guests across Bay Lake and Seven Seas Lagoon like a gentle breeze.

Cast Members were also involved in the design of the new cruiser . Their input helped dictate everything from cabin space to the location of the pilothouse.

These cast-sourced tweaks make the Tradewinds unique from the other three motor cruisers in the Walt Disney World fleet . If you need help picking it out, it’s the one with bright orange, yellow, white, and teal colors .

Making the christening and maiden voyage of the Tradewinds all the more important is the fact that it’s the first new motor cruiser to join the fleet in almost 30 years .

Transportation Guest Experience Manager Collin Garton tells Disney Parks Blog that the addition of the Tradewinds is “a really big deal for our cast .” Facility Asset Management Project Planer in charge of Tradewinds Greg Klesaris agrees, saying that it was a true team effort.

“From Transportation Operations to our engineers, everyone has come together to get the job done , and it’s been really great getting to collaborate with all of these people,” Klesaris says.

The fruits of their combined labors have paid off, because the Tradewinds is a beautiful boat that guests at WDW Resort are sure to enjoy .

Motor Boat Cruise

BACKSTORY (1955—1993): On July 20, 1955, Disneyland debuted the Tomorrowland Boats in the lagoon that would eventually be home to the Submarines. This attraction was a snoozer; only 542 guests rode them at opening. Compared to the other unique and fun attractions, the slow-moving and unexceptional Boats just couldn’t compete. On August 16, 1955, they were rechristened The Phantom Boats and redesigned with tailfins that were apparently a mechanical nightmare. They quickly got a bad reputation for stranding guests in the lagoon.

There were a total of 14 gas-powered fiberglass marvels painted in bright colors, designed by Bruce Bushman. Poor mechanical design caused the  motors to constantly overheat; every night the boats had to be rescued and repaired. “Pilots” for the boats were added to help the situation, but despite all their efforts, the Phantom Boats received the dubious distinction of being the first permanent Disneyland attraction to be closed. By the end of 1955, they were taken out of commission. There was a brief attempt to change the attraction to a Florida Everglades type “Airboat” (guests could even see signage proclaiming their June 2, 1956 opening). The new boat was built and even tested, but ultimately vetoed, so as a last resort, the Phantom Boats came back for one more chug around the lagoon in the summer of 1956.

1957 marked the debut of “The Motor Boat Cruise” in a nearby lagoon. This very sedate “B” Ticket attraction took away any control that guests had over the boats by putting them on a track. No steering or acceleration. Guests leisurely road around the Fantasyland/Tomorrowland lagoon while the Viewliner, Autopia, Monorail, and PeopleMover “sped” by (depending upon what year you were riding the boats of course!). Cast members operating the attraction wore cute sailor outfits. The next transformation occurred in 1991 when it was rethemed “The Motor Boat Cruise to Gummi Glen.” Plywood characters from Disney’s animated “Gummi Bears” TV show made Gummi Berry juice along the waterway. Mercifully, this snoozer of an attraction was finally removed for good in January 1993 when Mickey’s Toontown was constructed. The pencil sharpeners  had to choose between one or the other, and the Motor Boat Cruise lost. Today, this area is now known as the Fantasia Gardens.

JOHN WAITE REMEMBERS…

John Waite, Disneyland Resort Alumni, recently contacted me and was kind enough to share his memories of The Motor Boat Cruise attraction. John came to California in October 1955 and worked at the Disney Studio from January 1956 until Van France got him a job working for Milt Albright at the opening of Holidayland. Here is his story:

The Motor Boat Cruise – what memories!  Back in 1957 I was a ride operator on the original Motor Boat Cruise.  If you refer to old photos of Tomorrowland you will see the Motor Boat Cruise with the Viewliner train running along one side with the Midget Autopia across the way.  At that time the ride had a curved covered (for the guests) loading area.  The ride operators wore white sailor pants, white and blue stripped tee shirt and white captain’s cap.  It was summer and very hot.  There were two courses for the boats as in the later version that narrowed down to one channel through the loading area.  The track system was different in that it consisted of two pipe rails for each channel except, as noted before, in the loading area.  Under the boats there were three rollers – one at the bow and the other two at the back corners.  These rollers when making contact with the pipe rails, kept the boats on track – sort of, as you will read later.  The boats could actually be steered as there was enough space between the rails to allow a driver to turn the boat slightly.  There was a large open water area at the back of the ride where the boats made a large circular turnaround,  then they came back through the rock and rapids area as the later version did.  Ride operators did not enjoy the luxury of the air controlled gates at each load position as the later version used.  Instead, the ride operators had long aluminum poles with a wire cable loop at the end of it.  The boat engines were always going and the operator would hook the loop over the cleat at the bow of the boat as it came into the station, follow it to the first open space, and through shear strength, stop the boat until the guests disembarked and the next riders were safely seated before unhooking the loop and letting the boat go on its way.  As I recall there were underwater gates at the start and finish that would direct the boats alternately to Channel 1 or Channel 2.  The loaders lined up on the dock to catch their boats and bring them to a stop.  It took some strength to hold the boats during the load/unload process and new operators ended up with blistered hands until their hands toughened up.  We felt in good shape with all the physical labor it took to run the ride.  Now the plot thickens—what we found early on was that the guests had no idea how the boats were controlled under the murky water.  Since there was a little steering between the rails, one guest would try to bump their buddy in the next lane.  Of course he couldn’t do it, but steering against the rail slowed the boat down and if it was slowed long enough the next boat caught up to it and jammed the two boats together.  If it was the outside channel we could usually reach it with the poles and pull the boats apart.  However, if it was the inside channel or at the turnaround area, one of us would hand our wallet to another operator and jump into the water and wade out to the boats to separate them.  This was fine on a hot summer day, and of course we would then have to go to Wardrobe to get a dry costume.  This problem became quite common and we got permission to wear our wet costume until it dried out.  If this problem happened back in the turnaround area, it presented another problem.  This area was the deepest part of the ride.  On me the water came up to my armpits.  Now imagine a child in a boat that has suddenly stopped back there and then see a man jump into the water and approach them with only his head and shoulders visible.  Usually our first job was to reassure the children that everything was all right and then go about separating the boats..  This problem seemed to get worse as the summer progressed.  One of the operators was also a life guard.  He asked if he could wear his swim trunks and stay in the water in that back area.  He did that for several days until one day a water maintenance worker poured a water treatment chemical into the water and the life guard broke out with a rash.  That ended us having an operator in the water all the time.  Needless to say, the W.E.D. designers went to work to redesign the ride with a guide system similar to the one used in “It’s A Small World” attraction.  At that point the guests could no longer steer their boats.  Also the loading area was changed to two separate channels with air operated gates that held the boats during load/unload.  This was much better for the ride operators, although the guests had enjoyed the ability to steer the boats in a limited way.  The loading area and part of the channel layout is still visible across from the Matterhorn Bobsleds.

The boats worked just like the Autopia. They were confined to a course by an underwater system that allowed the helms person to drive the boat in a limited way. The water could not be allowed to rise too high because then the boats would float over the confinement system. The main problem with the boats is that the engines were unreliable. They tended to over-rev because of the prop drive system, and over-heat because of lack of cooling.

The Motor Boat Cruise was located in the man-made pond in between It’s A Small World and the Matterhorn Bobsleds attraction. Wait, are you confused? Maybe you have never heard of or seen this spot. We don’t blame you. Disney does a pretty good job of keeping this area a little hidden. If you aren’t looking for it, you will probably miss it. But it wasn’t always that way. This body of water once housed a fun boat ride for all ages. The best way to find the abandoned area is to head over to Edelweiss Snacks in Fantasyland. Walk behind the tiny food stand where you’ll find a seating area. This was once the loading dock for the former attraction.

Once upon a time, there were three different Autopia attractions in the park: Fantasyland Autopia, Tomorrowland Autopia, and the (now problematic, we know) “Midget” Autopia. That last one was for children only, no adults were allowed. Even though there were three official Autopia attractions, there was an unofficial fourth version. This version did not allow guests to drive cars around though. Instead, they got to drive motorboats around the small waterway. It was called the Motor Boat Cruise.

disney motor boat cruise

Once on board your own small boat, you could push the pedals at your feet, place your hands on the wheel and drive all around. You could venture through secret canals and enjoy the view of Fantasyland and Tomorrowland around you–and Disneyland ducks. Parents need not worry about their kids behind the wheel though, it didn’t actually work. The boats were guided by a metal track. Each boat could fit about 2-3 people. The boats were all different colours, just like the Autopia cars.

Gummi Bears Re-Theme

As part of the Disney Afternoon Avenue event in 1991, the Motor Boat Cruise received an interesting overlay. One of the popular shows on Disney Afternoon was Disney’s Adventures of the Gummi Bears . So 2D plywood set pieces of the Gummi Bear characters were added around the land of the attraction. The attraction became The Motor Boat Cruise to Gummi Glen.

Needless to say, this was not a popular decision. It felt cheap and rushed. Not to mention the fact that the idea of it was just kind of odd.

The Motor Boat Cruise to Gummi Glen only lasted about two years. In 1993, the whole attraction was shut down permanently. This decision was made in part because of the negative reactions to the Gummi Bear overlay. However, the main reason for its final closure was that Disney needed more room in the budget to create Mickey’s Toontown.

disney motor boat cruise

The boats and plywood characters were removed. However, the former loading dock is still there. For several years following the closure, it was a guest smoking area. When Disney banned all smoking in their theme parks, the area became a quiet, little-known seating area. Occasionally, you can find Alice and the Mad Hatter meeting and greeting guests in this area as well.

Motor Boat Cruise

Motor Boat Cruise Fantasyland attraction at Disneyland; opened in June 1957, and closed on January 11, 1993, with the area becoming Fantasia Gardens. In 1991 (March 15 to November 10) it was redecorated to become a special Motor Boat Cruise to Gummi Glen. This attraction was popular with children, who enjoyed piloting their crafts around the waterways under the Autopia bridges and Monorail beams, but adults found it pretty tame.

Motorboat Cruise to Gummi Glen

March 1991 – June 1993

Tomorrowland – The Motorboat Cruise to Gummi Glen technically sat in Tomorrowland, though its location is now considered part of Fantasyland . To find the loading dock, visitors followed the Fantasyland walkway toward It’s A Small World . They’d see the dock on the right, just after Autopia ’s track and before the Small World plaza.

Disneyland already had an existing Motorboat Cruise attraction in operation, so the Gummi Glen addition was a re-theming, not a completely new ride. The re-theme occurred as part of the “Disney Afternoon Avenue” event, which featured new overlays and character appearances across Fantasyland. The event proved to be a massive failure, closing by the end of 1991. But the Gummi Glen theming lasted until 1993, until the attraction closed for good.

Travelers aboard the Cruise to Gummi Glen ventured along a hidden track within the lagoon. The tour looped around the base of the Monorail , the edges of Autopia, and the shores of the Small World Plaza. Along the way, the boats passed plywood characters from the Gummi Bears television series.

The Motorboat Cruise to Gummi Glen never became a popular attraction in the park, but it stayed open a solid two years after the rest of the Afternoon Avenue attractions closed. Finally, Disney closed the waterway in 1993, giving full attention to the brand new Mickey’s Toontown . The original Motorboat Cruise never returned, and the dock transformed into a popular seating area in the rear of Fantasyland.

The Motorboat loading dock is still in the park; today it’s a covered seating area.

7 Comments on Motorboat Cruise To Gummi Glen

It took me so many years to confirm that this attraction existed. I had such foggy childhood memories about this, that at one point I wasn’t sure if this was even real or just a dream. I believe a few years back I commented on your Rescue Rangers Raceway article that I was looking for evidence of both of these ride and it how I ended up finding your website.

Haha I’m so glad you found it!!! I hate when you vaguely remember something and aren’t totally sure if you’re imagining it or not 🙂

I feel like you are me, because I too thought this ride was a dream after years of explaining it to people and NO ONE knowing what I was talking about.

I just caught Gummi Glen being shown for about 2 seconds in a YouTube about the history of Toontown and was like what!??.. rewound, paused the video and freaked out!!

So happy this actually existed, life feels more real now. 🙂 Thanks for providing the details about it!

Yeah, it was a real itch in my brain for the longest time. Like you, once I found this I felt like something had finally been put to rest. You don’t often get that kind of resolution in your life.

My earliest memories are going to Disneyland during the Disney Afternoon stint, and seeing Plane Crazy, and while I know I rode this, I don’t remember it at all!

When I was a Cast Member I dined inside the Eat Ticket, one of the backstage commissaries, which has many attraction vehicles and signs, one of the Motor Boats, complete with Gummi Bear name, hangs from the ceiling!

That’s super cool to hear one of the Motor Boats survived! Thanks for sharing 🙂

Yikes. This is like worse quality overlay than six flags. Shocked it even lasted a few months.

And that could mean a wild ride in the Everglades or sailing sunset cruises on one of the Orlando area's attractive lakes.

Orlando Airboat Rides

One of the things Florida is most known for is its famous airboat tours. Sign up for this fun adventure whether you’re in Fort Lauderdale or Miami, within Everglades National Park, or Orlando on Shingle Creek, on the headwaters of the Florida Everglades.

You won’t soon forget an exciting airboat ride when you visit the Orlando area, with a chance to see Bald Eagles and other endemic tropical birds, alligators, and crocodiles (maybe even a baby alligator).

Airboat rides are particularly popular amongst nature lovers. These special boats allow you to glide on the unique marshes and swampland of the Central Florida area. We thoroughly enjoyed our Florida airboat experience.

Sign up for a 90-minute fun and educational Orlando airboat tour to encounter the real Florida with experienced captains. Alternatively, secure your spot for a 1-hour sunset airboat tour and hope for one of Florida’s famous colorful sunsets.

Most airboat tours take place rain or shine. Just in case, we recommend traveling to Florida with a poncho or thin raincoat of some sort. Be sure to check in for your tour at least 30 minutes before the experience.

Orlando Boat Tour on an Airboat with Transportation

This tour includes pick up and drop off in Central Florida (including designated Disney World and Universal hotels), a BBQ lunch, a printed photo, and admission to their animal rescue Wildlife Park, where you can see birds, big cats, and reptiles.

The entire experience – from transportation to the boat ride – lasts around 7 hours, including the drive to and from the Everglades area. The Florida Everglades are approximately 45 minutes to an hour's drive each way from Orlando. Choose from a 30-minute or 60-minute airboat ride when you book your experience .

Orlando Sailing Tours

How about enjoying Orlando’s lakes with wind power? Sailing tours are the perfect way to glide on the water. And a sunset sail is incredibly romantic, to boot!

Private Morning Sail

Set sail on a 2-hour private sailing tour, starting at 10:00 am. Adventure awaits on Lake Fairview for up to four guests.

This area is just north of College Park near downtown Orlando and 15 minutes from Orlando’s Lieu Gardens. Don’t forget to bring towels if you want, though water is provided (and lakes are calm anyway, so you shouldn’t really get wet!).

Advanced reservations are required.

Private Lake Sunset Sail

Sail on Lake Fairview, approximately 10 minutes from downtown Orlando, 30-35 minutes from the Disney theme parks (including the Disney Springs area), and 25 minutes from Universal.

This 2-hour private Orlando boat tour can fit up to four people, and they allow you to bring your own snacks and beverages onboard. We recommend bringing a bottle of wine or champagne!

We recommend bringing along a wine tumbler set for your sailboat adventure!

Kayaking Tours

Connect with nature from the comfort of a kayak and get in some exercise too. Orlando boat tour options for kayaking are plentiful.

Kayak with Manatees

Head 45 minutes north of Orlando for your chance to kayak with manatees! These cute and friendly mammals are famous in the Sunshine State, where they come to enjoy the warm water for the winter.

Whether you’re a novice kayaking trying it for the first time, or an experienced pro, this tour is for you if you want to see a plethora of wildlife.

Glass Bottom Boat Kayak Tours

If you want to see the fish below the water’s surface without snorkeling, sign up for a glass-bottom kayak tour. See through the bottom of the boat on this Orlando boat tour and have the chance to view the colorful fish and marine plant life beneath you.

Try a Rock Springs guided kayak eco-tour as you glide on the crystal-clear water for two hours. You’ll learn about the local ecosystem, stop for photos, and have the opportunity to swim in the springs. Opt to jump into the water from a rope swing for a thrill during this adventure.

You can also opt for a sunset tour in a glass-bottom kayak . Paddle through the Winter Park Chain of Lakes and canals in a peaceful setting. Your knowledgeable guide will point out interesting nature homes along the way and share some history of the area. You’ll also be able to stop for photos where you like!

This tour is likely to sell out: Reserve Now

Winter Park Evening Clear Kayak Glow in the Dark Tour

If you want to add a fun element to your kayaking adventure, sign up for a Winter Park kayak tour at night with a glow-in-the-dark kayak. The boats are illuminated with nighttime lighting!

They will surely be a good photo opp and fun outing as the lights make the water beneath you glow.

Another great option is this Neon Night Glow Paddleboard or Clear Kayak experience on Lake Ivanhoe.

This unique boat tour allows you to see Orlando’s skyline at night as you paddle along with the help of your guides, the moonlight, and the colorful lights beneath your kayak or paddleboard.

Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour

One of our favorite Orlando boat tours is in Winter Park. It was established in the 1930s, decades before Walt Disney World opened in Lake Buena Vista.

This pontoon boat tour starts near the well-known Park Avenue area. Set out on your scenic cruise from Lake Osceola to the Winter Park Chain of Lakes as your guide takes you through the manmade canals.

Sail past stunning homes in Winter Park, where you will have breathtaking views of the opulent private homes in the area (which is one of the reasons we enjoy the boat tour).

You will have a chance to see wonderful some of Florida’s beautiful birds, like Blue Herons and large cranes, as you travel on several lakes.

Each boat holds a maximum of 18 passengers. Be sure to bring cash or a check to buy your tickets because credit cards are not accepted. We advise purchasing tickets in the morning on weekends, even if you plan on going later in the day. It’s a very popular tour, and tickets often sell out quickly.

Winter Park Scenic Boat Tour is closed on Christmas Day. Otherwise, tours leave daily on the hour, starting at 10:00 am. The last tour is at 4:00 pm.

Day Trip Boat Tours from Orlando

While the Orlando boat tours listed above are within 30 minutes, on average, from Orlando, it’s worth mentioning there are more boat tour options nearby within a 2-hour drive. Here are some additional Central Florida boat tour options.

Mount Dora Lake Tours

One of our favorite destinations from Central Florida is 45 minutes north: the quaint town of Mount Dora . There’s so much to see and do there in the afternoon or morning; a boat tour is the best way to extend your trip to a whole day.

Take a 2-hour pontoon boat tour with a departure point at the historic hotel, the Lakeside Inn. Enjoy your leisurely cruise around Lake Dora and The Harris Chain of Lakes, including the famed Dora Canal.

The all-weather 25’ boats can cruise rain or shine thanks to their retractable clear covers for the sides of the boat. Choose from one of two daytime tours, or their third option to cruise during sunset.

Clearwater Beach with Dolphin Encounter Cruise

This 12-hour full-day tour begins with pick-up at 7:30 am. You’ll head west of Orlando to the popular Florida destination (Clearwater Beach), where you will take a cruise to encounter bottlenose dolphins in their natural habitat.

While this means that you aren’t guaranteed to spot dolphins, your tour guide will do his or her very best to find them. You may see these beautiful mammals up close by the boat or further in the distance if they appear in the ocean. Part of the fun is the anticipation.

A one-hour dolphin tour boat ride is sandwiched between hours of free time on a Gulf Coast beach. For only $10 more, you can purchase a wristband for the boat ride that allows you to have unlimited beer, wine, and vodka punch.

Pickup and drop off are included at one of three major locations of your choice (Disney areas included). This means that all you have to do is sign up for the tour and be at that location for pick-up time.

Choose from the three pick-up locations listed below:

  • Walt Disney World area, on Epcot Resorts Blvd. (northern area of the parks)
  • Walt Disney World area, at Maingate Lakeside Resort in Kissimmee (area of the Disney World theme parks that is further south)
  • International Drive (close to Universal) at Senor Frogs

Clear Canoe Boat Tour Near Orlando at Silver Springs

This clear canoe boat tour is approximately halfway between Orlando and Gainesville at Silver Springs. The drive is approximately an hour and 45 minutes from downtown Orlando.

You’ll do a self-guided tour after the kayak company representative meets you and gives you a laminated map and some brief instructions. Paddle near Cypress Trees and see turtles, ducks, birds, and a chance to see manatees during the winter season, when they swim to Florida’s warm waters.

Dan and I often like to explore an area freely, on our own. Maybe you’re the same way! If so, this is a great tour for you in the Orlando area, as long as you can rent a car to get to the meeting point or take a taxi/Uber or Lyft there.

Orlando Boat Tours at Walt Disney World

Did you know that you can rent motorized boats at Disney World? It’s one of the best things to do at Walt Disney World, besides the parks.

Rent a Sun Tracker® Pontoon boat by the half-hour for up to 10 people. You can also opt to kayak or canoe from Fort Wilderness by the hour.

One of the most singular boat tours in Orlando, or perhaps anywhere, is an Amphicar boat tour. Be a passenger and the envy of all onlookers in a cool convertible car that drives right into the water. This experience is available at Disney Springs restaurant, The Boathouse.

Lastly, you can book a specialty cruise to see the fireworks. You don’t even have to be a hotel guest to do so! Snacks and soft drinks are included in a memorable cruise on a 25’ boat.

You can also request for a festive banner and/or balloons to be set up on the boat, which is included in the cost (request at the time of booking). It’s a great thing to do for you and your partner or up to 10 guests total, whether a proposal, anniversary treat, or family reunion.

What to Bring for Orlando Boat Tours

Florida's heat can be brutal, depending on the time of year. No matter the month, you definitely need to protect your skin from the sun. The sun in FL is strong, year-round.

Be sure to pack the following if you’ll be on the water in sunny Florida:

  • Refillable water bottle (the ice will stay intact for hours in the MiiR bottle, our favorite insulated wide-mouth bottle)
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • SPF lip balm
  • Eco-friendly bathing suit
  • Rash guard

Conclusion for Best Orlando Boat Tours

Whether you want to captain a boat yourself, row your way through Florida’s waters in a kayak, see gators on an educational airboat ride, or go on a romantic sailboat cruise around one of Central Florida’s lakes, an Orlando boat is a wonderful Florida activity.

It will connect you with nature, get you out in fresh air, and allow your body to absorb vitamin D in the Florida sunshine. Sign up for an Orlando boat tour and explore this southern state in a unique and adventurous way.

Six presumed dead after cargo ship crash levels Baltimore bridge

BALTIMORE — A major Baltimore bridge collapsed like a house of cards early Tuesday after it was struck by a container ship, sending six people to their deaths in the dark waters below, and closing one of the country’s busiest ports.

By nightfall, the desperate search for six people who were working on the bridge and vanished when it fell apart had become a grim search for bodies.

“We do not believe that we’re going to find any of these individuals still alive,” Coast Guard Rear Admiral Shannon N. Gilreath said.

Jeffrey Pritzker, executive vice president of Brawner Builders, said earlier that one of his workers had survived. He did not release their names.

Up until then, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore had held out hope that the missing people might be found even as law enforcement warned that the frigid water and the fact that there had been no sign of them since 1:30 a.m. when the ship struck Francis Scott Key Bridge.

Moore expressed heartbreak after officials suspended the search for survivors.

"Our heart goes out to the families," he said. "I can’t imagine how painful today has been for these families, how painful these hours have been have been for these families."

It was a crushing blow to the loved ones of the missing men, who had waited for hours at a Royal Farms convenience store near the entrance of the bridge for word of their fate.

Follow live updates on the Baltimore bridge collapse

The tragic chain of events began early Tuesday when the cargo ship Dali notified authorities that it had lost power and issued a mayday moments before the 984-foot vessel slammed into a bridge support at a speed of 8 knots, which is about 9 mph.

Moore declared a state of emergency while rescue crews using sonar detected at least five vehicles in the frigid 50-foot-deep water: three passenger cars, a cement truck and another vehicle of some kind. Authorities do not believe anyone was inside the vehicles.

Investigators quickly concluded that it was an accident and not an act of terrorism.

Ship was involved in another collision

Earlier, two people were rescued from the water, Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace said. One was in good condition and refused treatment, he said. The other was seriously injured and was being treated in a trauma center.

Moore said other drivers might have been in the water had it not been for those who, upon hearing the mayday, blocked off the bridge and kept other vehicles from crossing.

“These people are heroes,” Moore said. “They saved lives.”

Nearly eight years ago, the Dali was involved in an accident. In July 2016, it struck a quay at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium, damaging the quay.

The nautical commission investigated the accident, but the details of the inquiry were not immediately clear Tuesday.

The Dali is operated and managed by Synergy Group. In a statement, the company said that two port pilots were at the helm during Tuesday's crash and that all 22 crew members onboard were accounted for.

The Dali was chartered by the Danish shipping giant Maersk, which said it would have no choice but to send its ships to other nearby ports with the Port of Baltimore closed.

The bridge, which is about a mile and a half long and carries Interstate 695 over the Patapsco River southeast of Baltimore, was "fully up to code," Moore said.

National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy said that her agency will lead the investigation and that a data recorder on the ship could provide more information.

"But right now we're focusing on the people, on the families," she said. "The rest can wait."

President Joe Biden vowed to rebuild the bridge and send federal funds.

"This is going to take some time," the president warned. "The people of Baltimore can count on us though to stick with them, at every step of the way, till the port is reopened and the bridge is rebuilt."

Speaking in Baltimore, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg echoed the president's promise.

"This is no ordinary bridge," he said. "This is one of the cathedrals of American infrastructure."

But Buttigieg warned that replacing the bridge and reopening the port will take time and money and that it could affect supply chains.

The Port of Baltimore, the 11th largest in the U.S., is the busiest port for car imports and exports, handling more than 750,000 vehicles in 2023 alone, according to data from the Maryland Port Administration.

Image: Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapses After Being Struck By Cargo Ship

Writer David Simon, a champion of Baltimore who set his TV crime drama "The Wire" on the streets of the city he once covered as a reporter, warned online that the people who will suffer the most are those whose livelihoods depend on the port.

"Thinking first of the people on the bridge," Simon posted on X . "But the mind wanders to a port city strangling. All the people who rely on ships in and out."

Timeline of crash

Dramatic video captured the moment at 1:28 a.m. Tuesday when the Dali struck a support and sent the bridge tumbling into the water. A livestream showed cars and trucks on the bridge just before the strike. The ship did not sink, and its lights remained on.

Investigators said in a timeline that the Dali's lights suddenly shut off four minutes earlier before they came back on and that then, at 1:25 a.m. dark black smoke began billowing from the ship's chimney.

A minute later, at 1:26 a.m., the ship appeared to turn. And in the minutes before it slammed into the support, the lights flickered again.

Maryland Transportation Secretary Paul Wiedefeld said the workers on the bridge were repairing concrete ducts when the ship crashed into the structure.

At least seven workers were pouring concrete to fix potholes on the roadway on the bridge directly above where the ship hit, said James Krutzfeldt, a foreman.

Earlier, the Coast Guard said it had received a report that a “motor vessel made impact with the bridge” and confirmed it was the Dali, a containership sailing under a Singaporean flag that was heading for Sri Lanka.

Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge Collapses After Being Struck By Cargo Ship

Bobby Haines, who lives in Dundalk in Baltimore County, said he felt the impact of the bridge collapse from his house nearby.

"I woke up at 1:30 this morning and my house shook, and I was freaking out," he said. "I thought it was an earthquake, and to find out it was a bridge is really, really scary."

Families of bridge workers wait for updates

Earlier in the day, relatives of the construction crew waited for updates on their loved ones.

Marian Del Carmen Castellon told Telemundo her husband, Miguel Luna, 49, was working on the bridge.

“They only tell us that we have to wait and that they can’t give us information,” she said.

Castellon said she was "devastated, devastated because our heart is broken, because we don’t know how they have been rescued yet. We are just waiting for the news."

Luna's co-worker Jesús Campos said he felt crushed, too.

“It hurts my heart to see what is happening. We are human beings, and they are my folks,” he said.

Campos told The Baltimore Banner that the missing men are from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico.

Active search and rescue ends

The Coast Guard said it was suspending the active search-and-rescue effort at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

"Coast Guard’s not going away, none of our partners are going away, but we’re just going to transition into a different phase," Gilreath said at a news conference.

Maryland State Police Superintendent Roland L. Butler, Jr., said it was moving to a recovery operation. Changing conditions have made it dangerous for divers, he said.

Butler pledged to "do our very best to recover those six missing people," but the conditions are difficult.

"If we look at how challenging it is at a simple motor vehicle crash to extract an individual, I'm sure we can all imagine how much harder it is to do it in inclement weather, when it's cold, under the water, with very limited to no visibility," he said.

"There's a tremendous amount of debris in the water," which can include sharp metal and other hazards, and that could take time, Butler said.

'A long road in front of us'

Built in 1977 and referred to locally as the Key Bridge, the structure was later named after the author of the American national anthem.

The bridge is more than 8,500 feet long, or 1.6 miles. Its main section spans 1,200 feet, and it was one of the longest continuous truss bridges in the world upon its completion, according to the National Steel Bridge Alliance .

About 31,000 vehicles a day use the bridge, which equals 11.3 million vehicles per year, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

The river and the Port of Baltimore are both key to the shipping industry on the East Coast, generating more than $3.3 billion a year and directly employing more than 15,000 people.

Asked what people in Baltimore can expect going forward, the state's transportation secretary said it is too early to tell.

"Obviously we reached out to a number of engineering companies, so obviously we have a long road in front of us," Wiedefeld said.

smashed up side of a huge ship with a metal bridge collapsed on it

Cargo ship that hit Baltimore bridge was involved in Antwerp collision in 2016

The Dali was reportedly detained in Belgium after scraping side of quay and significantly damaging part of hull in good weather

  • How Baltimore’s Key Bridge collapsed – a visual guide

The same vessel that hit the Baltimore Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday, destroying it and sending people and vehicles tumbling into the water, was also involved in a collision while leaving the port of Antwerp, Belgium, in 2016.

According to Vessel Finder and the maritime incident archive Shipwrecklog, the Dali – a 948ft (290-meter) cargo ship with a capacity of 10,000 containers – was leaving the container terminal of Antwerp heading to Bremerhaven.

As it did so, its bow reportedly swung around, causing the stern to scrape the side of the quay, significantly damaging several meters of the hull.

The ship was reportedly detained by authorities afterward and docked in Deurganckdok, Belgium . There were reportedly no injuries or adverse pollution.

According to Vessel Finder , the weather was fine at the time, and the incident was reportedly blamed on the ship’s master and pilot on board.

What are flags of convenience?

A ship flying a flag of convenience means the owner has registered the vessel in a country other than their own. The ship flies the ensign or flag of that country, known as the flag state and operates under its laws, typically laxer than the owner’s own.

For a ship owner, the advantage of this arrangement includes comparatively fewer regulations, lower employment requirements, and thus cheaper labour, cheaper registration fees and lower or no taxes.

For crew members, the disadvantages tend towards lower working standards, fewer rights and little protection. They are opposed by the International Transport Workers' Federation.

Panama, which has the largest ship registry globally, followed by Liberia, operates an “open registry”, allowing foreign owners to register ships under its flag. It guarantees anonymity to the owners, making it difficult for them to be held to account.

The practice began in the 1920s in the US, when owners of cruise ships registered their vessels in Panama so that they could serve their passengers alcohol during Prohibition.

Karen McVeigh , senior reporter

It is unclear what crew were aboard the ship. Vessel Finder said at the time that the ship, which was built in South Korea in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries, was owned by the Greek company Oceanbulk Maritime but was chartered by Maersk.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) confirmed on Tuesday that the Dali was registered in Singapore and had 22 crew on board, with Maersk adding in a statement that the crew were all Indian but none of them were Maersk crew or personnel. It said the ship was operated by the charter vessel company Synergy Group.

Maersk has been approached for comment.

About 2.6km (1.6 miles) of the Baltimore bridge collapsed on Tuesday when the Dali crashed into it, causing a number of vehicles to fall into the Patapsco River below. At least seven people were being searched for with two rescued, including one in critical condition, officials said on Tuesday at a pre-dawn press conference.
