Eagles say goodbye to Austin — and here’s why they’ve never been cooler

eagles farewell tour texas

“I’m sorry,” two separate friends offered when I told them where I was going on Friday night. “Why are you listening to this?” my best friend asked me when she came over as I prepared to check into Hotel California.

At some point, liking Eagles — the band whose greatest hits album in 2018 overtook Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” to become the best-selling album of all time , according to RIAA — became corny. And to that, I say: Take it easy. An arena full of diehard fans sure did Friday at Moody Center, for the first show of a two-night Austin stand on the legendary group’s The Long Goodbye tour, billed as their for-real-this-time farewell.

My first Eagles live experience was in 2010, when I saw them on a whim as they headlined that year’s Austin City Limits Music Festival. “Oh, I know all these songs by heart,” I remember thinking, even though 1970s rock is not my passion. Such is the power of cultural osmosis and Don Henley.

On their final tour, popular music icons Henley, Joe Walsh, Timothy B. Schmit and their flock — including ringer Vince Gill and Deacon Frey, the son of late founding member Glenn Frey — again proved that there’s something special, and a little eternal, about 52 years of ubiquity.

Here’s what it was like to say a long goodbye to Eagles. The band plays their second Austin show at 7:30 p.m on Saturday at Moody Center.

Eagles flew through a history of hits.

First things first: All legacy acts should include a clip parade of their indelible moments from their past half-century of hitmaking. Heck, if it’s good enough for Bruce Springsteen and Cher, it’s good enough for the Greek chorus of California cool.

The digital scrapbook ended and the real memories began. All Eagles stood at mics lined up at the edge of the stage, cast in light that looked like someone paused a thunderstorm at just the right moment. A beautiful rendition of “Seven Bridges Road” opened the show, coursing with harmonies, bluegrassy plucking and baby boomer emotion.

As with that 2010 ACL Fest set, Friday was an almost overwhelming experience of realizing how much the band’s hits are programmed in all of our DNA. “Take It Easy” came second, with Deacon Frey taking lead on the band’s 1972 debut single, written by his dad and Jackson Browne. Frey tended to sing with his eyes closed; it felt like communion.

“He does sound just like him,” a concert-goer behind me said when Frey finished singing his dad’s lyrics.

The irrepressible, rubber-faced Walsh, on the other hand, seemed to commune with the elder gods of a far-flung dimension, so deep was he in the groove and the good times.

Every number, a singalong: “One of These Nights,” “Lyin’ Eyes,” “Take It to the Limit,” “Witchy Woman,” “Peaceful Easy Feeling” and “Tequila Sunrise” all came in quick succession.

Don Henley and Joe Walsh are your favorite rock & roll uncles

“Welcome to whatever this is,” Henley deadpanned in the first bit of crowd banter of the evening. The original boy of summer called Austin a good music town and recalled playing in the Texas capital since he was 18 or 19 years old.

“I’ve played every dive bar and s___ hole in this town,” he cracked.

The first thing the band did when they got off the plane this week was get a “big, bubbly plate of Tex-Mex,” he said.

To cheers, Henley promised the crowd a “two-hour vacation from all the madness out in the world.” Seemed like a lot of folks had let the sound of their own wheels drive them crazy and were ready to let loose.

The audience only got one selection from Henley’s considerable solo catalog: “The Boys of Summer,” natch. He dedicated the song to Jimmy Buffett, who died in 2023 and had his own history with Austin . “Boys of Summer” remains an undeniable, enduring standard of the modern age (I personally first vibed with The Ataris’ 2003 pop-punk cover , but that’s because I’m an insufferable millennial child). The licks would not be denied, the synths put a pair of Wayfarers on every head and golden stage lights bathed the arena.

Walsh, meanwhile, cut up and let loose. “I had some wonderful times in Austin, according to the police report,” he joked during one bit of banter.

His solo cuts got even more of a workout, including an adrenaline-surging performance of “In the City” and a crowd-winning rendition of “Life’s Been Good.” He sounded like an alley cat. It was perfect.

Glenn Frey’s presence was felt.

Glenn Frey, who died in 2016 , loomed over the show. A photo of the guitarist filled the big screen after one number from Deacon Frey and garnered huge applause.

While the younger Frey served as his father’s literal legacy, Gill did his old friend proud, too. The celebrated country singer-songwriter (and Mr. Amy Grant to some of us) sang with warmth all night. A strong falsetto and tender, yearning tone on “Take It to the Limit” made me want to catch a solo Gill show sometime.

Peaceful, easy feelings took roost

As the show rounded up on 11 p.m., and as the old heads started to feel their $20 drinks, the significance of this farewell pulled at your gut. A one-two punch of “Life in the Fast Lane” and “Hotel California” was liable to send you into a fugue state. Over the course of the night, so many guitar riffs sounded like lazy Saturdays. So many bass lines sounded like a thousand limes plunking into a thousand cheap Tecates.

See, the strum of an Eagles hit is baked in the sun and baked into your brain. You’ve eaten fried shrimp by the lake to these songs. You’ve watched highway stripes tick off road trip hours like an asphalt metronome to these songs. You’ve bought pants at Dillard’s to these songs.

Just in time for the emotions to flow, the band returned for an encore that included the most potent version of “Desperado” you’ll ever hear. Eagles might be checking out, but they can never leave — not really, as long as the world knows every chorus by heart. Sounds pretty cool to me.

LOS ANGELES , July 6, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — After more than 50 years of touring, and consistently selling out arenas and stadiums worldwide, the Eagles announced today that their upcoming “The Long Goodbye”  will be the band’s final tour.

Thirteen shows will be initially announced. The first set of dates will begin September 7, 2023 , in New York .

The Eagles’ long-time contemporaries and fellow Hall of Famers, Steely Dan,  will be joining these historic shows and commemorating their own 50+ year career.

Presale tickets and VIP packages will be available starting Wednesday, July 12 for all announced shows. The general on-sale will start Friday, July 14 at 10:00 AM local time.

During “The Long Goodbye,” the Eagles – Don Henley , Joe Walsh , Timothy B. Schmit , with Vince Gill and Deacon Frey – will perform as many shows in each market as their audience demands. The tour is expected to continue into 2025.

Over the band’s more than 50 years of touring, the Eagles have performed more than 1,000 concerts around the world, accounting for more than 15 million tickets. Eagles’ tours have consistently ranked in the Top 10 of both concert industry publications, Billboard and Pollstar .

In the Fall of 1971, the Eagles formed, pioneered, and personified a uniquely American musical style blending country, folk, R&B, rock, and pop sensibilities, and would go onto become one of the most creatively and commercially successful bands of all time.  In today’s faddish, fractured, rock landscape, the Eagles retain an appeal that transcends both generation and genre, cementing the band’s role as enduring musical icons.

The Eagles have sold more than 150 million albums worldwide, scored six #1 albums, and topped the singles charts five times. They earned six GRAMMY Awards, were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, in their very first year of eligibility, and received the Kennedy Center Honors in 2016.

The band’s Greatest Hits 1971-1977 is the best-selling album in history, with the RIAA certifying the collection at 38-times Platinum.  Hotel California is the third best-selling U.S. album in history, certified 26-times Platinum.  After its release in 1976, it topped the charts and earned two GRAMMY Awards for “New Kid In Town” and “Hotel California.”

The Eagles announce farewell tour: 'The time has come for us to close the circle'

eagles farewell tour texas

The Eagles will embark on their own long road out of Eden this fall for a farewell tour expected to last into 2025.

"We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful," the band said in a statement. "Everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle."

Dubbed The Long Goodbye, the Eagles' final shows will kick off Sept. 7 at Madison Square Garden in New York. Only the first handful of dates are being announced with Boston (Sept. 11), Denver (Oct. 5), Atlanta (Nov. 2) and St. Paul, Minnesota (Nov. 17) among them.

Presale tickets and VIP packages go on sale July 12; the general on-sale begins 10 a.m. local time July 14.

Also along for the jaunt will be Steely Dan, longtime contemporaries of the band who will commemorate their own five-decade-plus career.

In announcing their plans to end their "52-year odyssey," the Eagles – composed of Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit – noted they will play as many shows in each market as the audience demands, even if it requires returning to certain cities. The band will be joined onstage, as they have since the 2016 death of founding member Glenn Frey, by Vince Gill and Frey's son, Deacon.

Shortly after Frey's death at the age of 67, Henley indicated the Eagles would no longer tour. But following a pair of special classic-rock-focused festivals in 2017 – Classic West and Classic East, organized by their longtime manager Irving Azoff – they resumed regular live performances.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famers and six-time Grammy winners have played more than 1,000 concerts throughout their 50 years of touring. Their recently wrapped Hotel California Tour – named for their landmark 1976 album, which they played in its entirety with a backing orchestra – grossed about $250 million over 90 shows, according to music industry trade publication Pollstar.

In thanking fans for their years of support, the band concluded, "This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on."

The Eagles are ready to fly one last time, soaring for a farewell tour this fall to cap off their five decades of touring.

“The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds,” the “Hotel California” and “Desperado” hit-makers said in a Thursday statement.

“We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful. Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle.”

The Los Angeles-formed rock band — eternally associated with the Southern California country-rock sound — will launch their “Long Goodbye” tour in New York’s Madison Square Garden on Sept. 7, announcing 12 additional dates Thursday with the possibility of more to come. “The official farewell tour is currently in the planning stages. We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round. So, scheduling information will be released as dates are set,” said the band, whose current lineup includes drummer and vocalist Don Henley of Dallas, famed guitarist Joe Walsh, bassist Timothy B. Schmit and guitarist Vince Gill. Gill joined the band after founding member and guitarist Glenn Frey died at 67 in 2016. (Frey’s son Deacon also played with the band for nearly five years before announcing his departure in 2022.)

“The difficulties of booking venues for multiple nights may require us to return to certain cities, depending on demand. But, we hope to see as many of you as we can, before we finish up,” they said. “Most importantly, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for embracing this band and its music. At the end of the day, you are the reason we have been able to carry on for over five decades. This is our swan song, but the music goes on and on.”

The six-time Grammy Award-winning group and Rock & Roll Hall of Famers will be joined by contemporary act Steely Dan, whose members will also commemorate their own half-century-spanning career.

The bands have scheduled shows through mid-November in Boston; Newark, New Jersey; Denver; Indianapolis; Detroit; Cleveland; Atlanta; Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina; Lexington, Kentucky; and St. Paul, Minnesota. The full schedule can be found at eagles.com . The Long Goodbye tour follows their recently expanded Hotel California tour, named for their landmark 1976 album that they played in its entirety during the tour, which wrapped in Baltimore in April.

Presale tickets and VIP packages for the “Long Goodbye” will be made available on July 12 for all announced shows. General on-sale begins July 14.

The eagles say goodbye to houston as part of farewell tour with steely dan.

Eagles band 2021 lineup

The Eagles are making their final visit to Houston.

Houstonians will experience one of those crazy nights in 2024. The Eagles are bringing their The Long Goodbye tour to the Toyota Center on Friday, February 16, 2024.

The Eagles are ready to fly one last time, soaring for a farewell tour this fall to cap off their five decades of touring.

“The Eagles have had a miraculous 52-year odyssey, performing for people all over the globe; keeping the music alive in the face of tragic losses, upheavals and setbacks of many kinds,” the “Hotel California” and “Desperado” hitmakers said in a Thursday statement .

“We know how fortunate we are, and we are truly grateful. Our long run has lasted far longer than any of us ever dreamed. But, everything has its time, and the time has come for us to close the circle.”

The Los Angeles-formed rock band — eternally associated with the Southern California country-rock sound — will launch their Long Goodbye tour in New York’s Madison Square Garden on Sept. 7, announcing 12 additional dates Thursday with the possibility of more to come. However, no California dates have yet been announced.

Welcome to the ‘Hotel California’ saga: Missing lyric sheets, rare book dealers and a relentless Don Henley

In July, three men were indicted in an attempt to sell the manuscripts, stolen property belonging to the Eagles’ leader. But the story begins in the ’70s with a shelved biography.

Aug. 25, 2022

“The official farewell tour is currently in the planning stages. We want to give all our fans a chance to see us on this final round. So, scheduling information will be released as dates are set,” said the band, whose current lineup includes drummer and vocalist Don Henley, famed guitarist Joe Walsh, bassist Timothy B. Schmit and guitarist Vince Gill. Gill joined the band after founding member and guitarist Glenn Frey died at 67 in 2016 . (Frey’s son Deacon also played with the band for nearly five years before announcing his departure in 2022 .)

The six-time Grammy Award-winning group and Rock and Roll Hall of Famers will be joined by contemporary act Steely Dan, whose members will be commemorating their own half-century spanning career as well.

The Eagles’ Glenn Frey spun sun-baked SoCal ballads that will endure

Few bands were better at distilling the vibe of Los Angeles in the 1970s than the Eagles, and as its singer and guitarist, Glenn Frey served as a sort of mellow ambassador of our city.

Jan. 19, 2016

The bands have scheduled shows through mid-November in Boston, Newark, Denver, Indianapolis, Detroit, Cleveland, Atlanta, Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C., Lexington, Ky., and St. Paul, Minn. The full schedule can be found here . The Long Goodbye tour follows their recently expanded Hotel California tour , named for their landmark 1976 album that they played in its entirety during the tour, which wrapped in Baltimore in April.

Presale tickets and VIP packages for the Long Goodbye will be made available July 12 for all announced shows. General on-sale begins July 14.
