Another option for transportation is to take a bus from Florence to Pisa. The best option for bus transportation is to travel with FlixBus as it’s the only company offering direct bus transportation between the cities.

The journey is around an hour to an hour and a half, making the cost and travel time the same for both bus and train transportation. You can view bus schedules here .

The downside to bus transport is that bus stations are typically outside of city centers, with Florence’s bus station (Villa Costanza) being around 8 km outside of the city and Pisa’s bus station being 2 km outside of the city.

Although transportation from the station to the city is convenient and quick, it still makes it a bit more inconvenient, especially if you only have one day in Pisa to explore.

If you’re traveling by car for your Florence to Pisa day trip, it’s just a short 1 ½ hour drive from Florence. The drive itself is a special journey, passing through small Tuscan towns and rolling dreamy hills before arriving at your final destination.

This also gives you the option to have a few stops and detours along the way to make an extended day trip and Pisa itinerary. 

With all of that being said, it is important to keep in mind that these are both busy Italian cities, so I recommend leaving and arriving at times that aren’t rush hours as traffic can be dense.

As for parking, it can be tricky to find a parking spot but ​​there are a few car parks a few minutes away from the Leaning Tower of Pisa, with a few of those being free to park in.

There are also a few car parks outside of the city center with shuttles into the historic city to save you the stress of finding a parking spot.

The area that you’ll be most intrigued to visit is the “centro storico” or historic center of Pisa, located North of the River Arno. This area is just like any other Italian town or small city, with exquisite piazzas, medieval churches, and magical corners tucked away off of the city’s alleyways.

Wandering through the historic center is one of the best things to do in Pisa and it almost feels like something out of a classic Italian movie, taking in sights of locals going about their day, the warm Italian sun determined to melt your luscious gelato, and old buildings lining narrow streets on every corner.

Piazza dei Cavalieri 

Within the historic center of Pisa, the biggest and one of the most important squares is the Piazza dei Cavalieri or “the Knights’ Square”.

The Palazzo dell’Orologio or “Clock Palace”, located in the square is a key part of history with it once being the seat of the government in medieval Pisa and is an integral and interesting part of Pisan history to witness during your visit.

Every city has its main shopping street, and Pisa is no different, with the Borgo Stretto or “Narrow Street” spanning the center of the city. Borgo Stretto is quite literally its name, a narrow street full of all sorts of shops, restaurants, and cafes.

The street is mostly pedestrian and still mostly has small artisan shops and independent restaurants, unlike many other places all with the same high street shops.

It’s a delight peeking into the windows of the shops on the Borgo Stretto, whether it’s an old book store, a stylish boutique, or a local artisan selling handmade leather goods.

Off of the Borgo Stretto, make a point to wander down the small alleys as most of the time you’ll find yourself in small Tuscan piazzas in the middle of everyday Pisan life. 

Botanic Gardens

If you’re a traveler keen to find nature while traveling in a city, the Botanical Gardens of Pisa are located within the historic center and just a few minutes walk from the Knights’ Square.

Founded in 1543 by physician and botanist Luca Ghini, the Botanical Gardens are a lovely oasis with plants to discover from pretty much every part of the world, all in the center of medieval Pisa.

There is an admission fee, but every first Sunday of the month is “Green Sunday” with free entry if you’re lucky to visit on one of those dates.

Piazza dei Miracoli

The most easily identifiable landmark in the city of Pisa is the Piazza dei Miracoli or “Square of Miracles”.

With the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Duomo di Pisa, the Baptistery, and Campo Santo all in one spot, the Square of Miracles is pretty much an outdoor museum in itself, making it no surprise that the square itself became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

All three components of the square are supposed to make up the stages of human life and it’s truly a remarkable and unique complex of monuments and sacred sites in the center of Pisa. 

For admission tickets aside from the Cathedral with free admission, you can purchase individual or combination tickets for any of the sites within the Square of Miracles. To save time when you arrive, you can also purchase tickets in advance here for the Leaning Tower or a combination ticket here .

Leaning Tower of Pisa

Undoubtedly the most visited and famous part of Pisa, the Tower of Pisa is more than just an independent tower, it’s the bell tower adjoined by the neighboring Cathedral of Pisa.

As the tallest bell tower in all of Europe, the particular and famous leaning design of the tower was actually a mistake and design flaw by mystery architects in 1173.

At 8 stories high, the Tower of Pisa is worth more than just visiting to take a famous picture of it from the outside. The tickets to enter and climb the Tower of Pisa are pricey, though the view from the top offers outstanding views of the city (and don’t worry, you’re completely safe inside, even if it is a bit lopsided!).

Opening hours for admission to the inside of the tower vary depending on the time of the year that you visit, so make sure to check opening hours in advance.

Pisa Cathedral & Campo Santo

Next to the Tower of Pisa at the Square of Miracles is one of the most astonishing churches in Tuscany, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and no visit to Pisa is complete without seeing this incredible building.

In 1063, architect Buscheto designed the grand cathedral in a new combination of styles from Eastern architecture, Byzantine features, and Lombard decoration. From the marble exterior of the cathedral and the bronze doors guarding the front of the cathedral to the gold ceiling of the interior, I highly suggest visiting inside the Cathedral during your time in Pisa.

Visits inside are free, but you must reserve an admission time in advance. With tickets to either the Tower, Campo Santo, or Baptistery, you can visit the Cathedral at any opening time, which is open every day. You can also book a guided tour .

On the back end of the Cathedral, you’ll also find the “Campo Santo”, or the cemetery of Pisa, the youngest of all the monuments of the Square of Miracles.

Historical legends claim that the cemetery was built with holy soil from Jerusalem, and because of this, over time the cemetery has become a holy ground in its own right.

Whether the legend is true or not, it’s a beautiful spot in Pisa to visit; from the well-maintained green area to the stunning frescoes lining the inside walls of the cemetery.

The Baptistery

Also located in the Square of Miracles is the Baptistery of Pisa, the tallest baptistery in the world at 55 meters high. Dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, ths incredible building took almost a century to build, resulting in a unique combination of architectural styles, both Romanesque and Gothic style architecture.

If you’re particularly interested in history, the Renaissance mastermind Galileo Galilei was baptised here in 1564, so it’s the perfect place to take a walk through Tuscan Renaissance history.

Make sure to stop by the Baptistery to round up your visit to Pisa’s most monumental and historic square, the Square of Miracles. 

Arno Riverfront 

After spending time wandering through the Historic Center and Square of Miracles in Pisa, a great way to round out your one day in Pisa itinerary is to head to the Arno Riverfront.

While the Arno River holds the most popularity from Florence with its famous painted riverfront views with the classic Ponte Vecchio Bridge, the Arno River actually terminates at the Pisa Marina before flowing into the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Spending time walking along the Arno River is the perfect way to spend time taking in the scenery along this famous Italian river without the masses stuffing in to take photos along the river in Florence.

Walking alongside the banks of the Arno River is a wonderful way to get away from the crowds of the center while admiring the Tuscan beauty of Pisa reflected on the calm river water.

Located in a medieval monastery beside the Arno River, The ​​National Museum of San Matteo is easily the most popular, with displays of historic ecclesiastical works from Pisa and surrounding areas.

If you’re particularly interested in Renaissance art and classic frescoes from the period, The Sinopie Museum is another solid option, where you have the opportunity to observe the early, original graphic sketch copies of frescoes from back to the Middle ages. 

Both museums have the option to purchase combination tickets with any of the monuments at the Miracles Square, giving a great opportunity to save money on a day trip to Pisa.

Beyond the city of Pisa, if you’re searching to spend more time in the western part of the Tuscany region, the quaint, sleepy Tuscan town of Lucca is just about 45 minutes away by train or 25 minutes away by car.

Florence to Pisa by Train

From Santa Maria Novella Train Station, Florence there are plenty of trains that run to Pisa Central, Pisa on a daily basis. There are 2 types of trains that shuttle this route- the fast trains with limited stops and the slow trains. There's barely a 15 minute difference between the two so either should do fine. The only glitch we see with travelling via train to Pisa is that Pisa Central is about 1.5kms away from the happening Piazza dei Miracoli which houses all the attractions. During summer, the 20 minute walk can be taxing, but if you manage to catch a cab or bus from the Pisa Central station, you should be good to go.

Florence to Pisa by Bus

There are regular coaches/buses that ply between Florence and Pisa. The 2 most reputed coach companies that are reliable and economical are Terravision and Autostradale. However, these coaches do not enter the city premises in either cities, hence you may have to catch a can or bus from the bus stop to get to Piazza dei Miracoli. Pisa is located about 83km (51mi) west of Florence, well within the range of a day or even half day visit independently by public transport or a choice of tours available.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa is one of the most famous structures in the world and is what every first time visitor to Pisa is looking to see, but it is a part of a complex of separate attractions around the Piazza dei Miracoli where it is located.

For tourists to Pisa everyone makes for the Piazza dei Miracoli (Miracle Square) to the north-west of the city of Pisa, a World Heritage Site.

The Leaning Tower is of course the star, ably supported by the Cathedral (Duomo).

Leaning Tower of Pisa - why does it lean?

Constructed as the bell tower to accompany the cathedral, the tower began to shift on its foundations in 1178, before the architect, Bonanno Pisano, had completed the first three tiers.

Fortunately, the lean has now been halted, due to tricks with cables and counter-subsidence. The tower now leans on an angle of 4.1m (13 ft), rather than the previous 5m (16ft).

Public transport between florence & pisa.

By train Florence to Pisa

Trains run to Pisa from Santa Maria Novella Train Station Florence at the western edge of the historic centre 3 to 4 times an hour during the working week and at least hourly trains at the weekend.

There are two types of trains that run the route, the faster trains take an hour or slightly less, the slower trains take 10-15 minutes longer. The fare is the same for either class of train.

The station at Pisa is called Pisa Central Station. In terms of facilities it has a left luggage office.

The main glitch with travelling by train is that Pisa station is south of the river about 1.5km (1 mile) from the Piazza dei Miracoli (Miracle Square) where the Leaning Tower of Pisa is located on the north side of the river.

It's a 20-minute walk through the largely pedestrianised city centre, or there are local buses, even a hop-on hop-off tourist bus.

The TrenItalia website has English language pages and timetables and online advance e-ticketing. On some shorter urban journeys it is not possible to buy tickets online.

Note: When using online ticketing and travel planning systems they use the Italian name of Florence, which is Firenze.

Pisa attractions: practical information for independent visitors including tickets

The Pisa attractions are open all year round though opening hours are quite complex and seasonal.

For the majority of visitors the sole reason is the famous leaning tower which is located in Piazza dei Miracoli (Miracle Square) just to the north of the city centre.

Piazza dei Miracoli is a pedestrianised area, free to access with the main attractions listed below within the square, plus tourist offices, gift shops and exhibitions as well as ticket offices.

In the summer months (April to October) the Leaning Tower of Pisa is open from 9am to 9pm with the other attractions at similar times. For the full opening times, go to the official website link at the top of the page.

Between Piazza dei Miracoli the city centre and the railway station the route is lined with restaurants, bars and places to eat of all types.

Cathedral (Duomo)

The Cathedral (Duomo) is open to tourists and entrance is free. If you wish to visit only the Cathedral you can collect your coupon for a maximum of two people at the ticket office.

Baptistery, the Monumental Cemetery, the Opera del Duomo Museum and the Sinopie Museum.

If you want to visit more than one of the above, you can buy combination tickets for all permutations of the attractions. If you bought a combination ticket for all 4 attractions the cost would be under half if you purchased tickets separately. You can buy these tickets from the ticket offices on the day.

Leaning Tower of Pisa

You’ll have a strict 30 minutes to climb to the top, take in the views and head back down, so be sure to make every second of your time in the tower count.

The 294-step staircase can be disconcerting; with steps slanting different ways, but you’ll be rewarded with fantastic panoramic views over Pisa from the top.

Especially in the summer months it's worth purchasing tickets in advance to avoid the queues.

Tickets for the Leaning Tower can be purchased online from the official website (a maximum of 20 days and a minimum of 1 day prior to the date of the visit, and subject to availability) but the booking system is very poor.

Walking between the railway station & the Leaning Tower of Pisa

From the Pisa Central Railway Station it's about a 20-minute walk to the Leaning Tower of Pisa right through the city centre. Unfortunately there is little in the way of signage.

Exiting the front entrance of Pisa Central Railway Station you will find the NH Cavaleiri Hotel directly opposite, you go down the road to the left of the hotel. After about 100m you come to a large piazza, cross directly over and enter the pedestrianised road called the Corso Italia which forms the main shopping street through the city centre.

Eventually you come to a broad river flanked by busy roads at a small square, cross the bridge to another small square on the other side. Take the pedestrianised lane on the left hand side of the back of the square/piazza. Any signs to Piazza Dei Cavaleiri are pointing our way.

After about a 100m a lane joins from the left and shortly after is a small square (Piazza Giovan Battista Donati). Immediately after the square/piazza fork left along the Via Ulisse Dini that takes you to the large Piazza Dei Cavaleiri.

Continue directly across Piazza Dei Cavaleiri, there are three exits opposite. Going dead straight is the Via Dalmazi, but our way is the Via Corsica, just before the Via Dalmazi on the left. After just 20m along the Via Corsica go straight over at a crossroads and the Via Corsica has become the Via Dei Mille.

After about another 75m, the second right is the Via Santa Maria, lined with restaurants aimed at the tourist. The Via Santa Maria takes you all the way to the Leaning Tower of Pisa and Piazza dei Miracoli (Miracle Square).

The Borgo san Jacopo is one of the most exclusive restaurants in Florence. There are just four tables on a small terrace, but this terrace offers breathtaking views of the Ponte Vecchio. The star chef, Peter Brunel, offers mouthwatering entrées. Save room for the purple potato sorbet with various toppings, including gold leaf, for dessert.

A popular stop for many tourists is La Menagere. La Menagere is home to both a café and cocktail bar, but you’ll also find beautiful bouquets in the flower shop as well as quality Italian homeware in the store. Dinner entrées can include everything from spaghetti with squid to beef with pears.

Nightlife & Entertainment

While it’s common to stop for a cocktail in the evening before turning in, nightlife in Florence is relatively calm. In fact, one of their most popular bars offers cappuccino and pastries in the morning, a light lunch in the afternoon, and a buffet dinner as well as cocktails in the evening. This bar, known as Caffe degli Artigiani, is in the center of the artisan district.

The La Casa del Vino is a popular wine bar near the center of town. If you’re looking to try some of the top wines in the area of Tuscany or even find some less common wines from all over the country, you’ll want to stop by. To go with the extensive wine list, there is a menu of light snacks that includes meats, cheeses, crostini, and salads.

Getting Around

Getting around by car in the city of Florence is nearly impossible. Much of the city is off-limits to drivers. Of those streets that are drivable, many are narrow and might even be one-way. If traveling by car is necessary, you’ll want to take a taxi. However, taxis are quite expensive.

The best way to get around Florence is on foot. In fact, it’s possible to walk from one side of the city to the other in less than an hour. If your feet are getting tired or you have a longer distance to travel, a bus system is available. You can find tickets at local convenience stores.

Accommodations

If the city of Florence had a theme, it would be luxury. From the historical sites to the most modern hotels, from street food vendors to well-known eateries, Florence is the epitome of luxury. You’ll find the attractions in Florence mostly based on the history and food of the region. While the Statue of David is arguably one of the most popular sights to see in Florence, getting in to see Michelangelo’s famous artwork can take some time. Lines are usually very long, but it’s worth it.

You may also want to stop at Piazzale Michelangiolo , a terrace overlooking the city. The skyline of Florence seen from this terrace is the same often seen on postcards. Late afternoon or early evening are ideal times to visit as the crowds have died down.

There is no shortage of museums to visit while in Florence. Gucci Museo, or the Gucci Museum, is quite fun and a bit different than most other museums in the area. An archeological museum, the Museo Archeologico, features much of the regional history prior to the Medicis.

The Galleria dell’ Accademia is home to the Statue of David and other popular exhibits such as several Stradivarius violins and famous paintings. Be sure to see the Uffuzi Gallery as well to see the Renaissance period masterpieces.

Pisa is at once the best known and the most mysterious of TUSCAN CITIES. Its most celebrated monument (THE LEANING TOWER) has become, along with the COLOSSEUM, gondolas and spaghetti a symbol for the entire ITALIAN REPUBBLIC. Pisa's origins are unknown. The city lies at the junction of two rivers, Arno and Auser (now disappeared) in the Ligurian Sea forming a laguna area. The Pelasgi, the Greeks, the Etruscans and the Ligurians have variously been proposed as founders of the city. Archeological remains from the 5th century BC confirm the existence of a city at the sea, trading with Greeks and Gauls. The presence of an Etruscan necropolis was discovered during excavations in the Arena Garibaldi in 1991. From the 11th to the 13th century, PISA's powerful navy ensured the city's dominance in the western Mediterranean. Trading links with SPAIN and NORTH AFRICA led to a scientific and cultural revolution reflected in the splendid buildings at the era:

DUOMO, BAPTISTRY and THE CAMPANILE (BELL TOWER).

Pisa's decline was assured when the ARNO began to silt up. Salt marsh, partly a nature reserve now divides the city from the sea.

The Leaning Tower of Pisa (Italian: Torre pendente di Pisa) or simply The Tower of Pisa (La Torre di Pisa) is the campanile, or freestanding bell tower, of the cathedral of the Italian city of Pisa. It is situated behind the Cathedral and it is the third structure by time in Pisa's Piazza del Duomo (Cathedral Square). Although intended to stand vertically, the tower began leaning to the southeast soon after the onset of construction in 1173 due to a poorly laid foundation and loose substrate that has allowed the foundation to shift direction. building: the 13th century square tower at Suurhusen and the nearby 14th century bell tower in the town of Bad Frankenhausen (Sunday Telegraph no 2,406- 22nd July The height of the tower is 55.86 m (183.27 ft) from the ground on the lowest side and 56.70 m (186.02 ft) on the highest side. The width of the walls at the base is 4.09 m (13.42 ft) and at the top 2.48 m (8.14 ft). Its weight is estimated at 14,500 tonnes. The tower has 296 or 294 steps ;the seventh floor has two less steps on the north-facing staircase. The tower leans at an angle of 3.97 degrees. This means that the top of the tower is 3.9 meters from where it would stand if the tower were perfectly vertical.

Driving down from the Fort, passing the old gate to the city, the Porta Romana, we come to the imposing Pitti Palace, which hosts many galleries and museums (Gallery of Modern Art, Costume Gallery, Palatine Gallery,Royal Apartments, Coach Museum, Silver and Porcelain museums, etc) and a magnificent park called the Boboli Gardens. Next we head for the dead center of the downtown, to the Piazza della Repubblica, surrounded by the historical literary cafés, where long ago important intellectuals gathered together. Following the Via De'Calzaiuoli, which connects Piazza del Duomo ( S. Maria del Fiore, the Baptistery, Giotto's Bell tower) to Piazza Signoria (Palazzo Vecchio, Uffizi, etc.) you will be able to admire the best masterpieces of Renaissance art, breathing in the magical atmosphere that only Florence can offer, a marvellous tour of Florence.

The Basilica is the largest Franciscan church in the world. Its most notable features are its sixteen chapels, many of them decorated with frescoes by Giotto and his pupils, and its tombs and cenotaphs. Legend says that Santa Croce was founded by St Francis himself. The construction of the current church, to replace an older building, was begun on 12th May 1294[1], possibly by Arnolfo di Cambio, and paid for by some of the city's wealthiest families. It was consecrated in 1442 by Pope Eugene IV. The building's design reflects the austere approach of the Franciscans. The floorplan is an Egyptian or Tau cross (a symbol of St Francis), 115 metres in length with a nave and two aisles separated by lines of octagonal columns. To the south of the church was a convent, some of whose buildings remain. The Basilica became popular with Florentines as a place of worship and patronage and it became customary for greatly honoured Florentines to be buried or commemorated there. Some were in chapels "owned" by wealthy families such as the Bardi and Peruzzi. As time progressed, space was also granted to notable Italians from elsewhere. For 500 years monuments were erected in the church including those to:

MICHELANGELO BUONARROTI, GALILEO GALILEI, GIOACCHINO ROSSINI, NICCOLO' MACHIAVELLI and many others.

Florence was the cradle of Renaissance culture. Through the patronage of the Medici court, the city became the home of artists and people of letters. It was certainly the cultural reference point of the 15th and 16th centuries. During the 13th and 14th centuries, a number of illustrious people were recognized in every endeavor. Giotto, Cimabue, Arnolfo di Cambio and Orcagna left behind their masterpieces in the city of Lily. These provided a model for the entire world of Tuscan and Italian art. For the shop or the hungry soul, there are also many shops and "trattoria" to dive into, so everyone in the group can satisfy their desires whether it be a sharp leather jacket, or a scrumptious plate of pasta! How to get from Florence to Pisa (by train, bus and tour)

Pisa is an easy day trip from Florence and if you have time to include it in your Italy itinerary, definitely do it! It’s just an hour away, and yet it feels worlds away from Tuscany’s most popular city. Pisa is not just worth for seeing the famous Leaning Tower – we found that there’s more to Pisa than this very touristy landmark, and when you venture further away from the main sights, you’ll discover a pleasant Italian town. It’s also a welcome change from super touristy Florence – if you’re not sure how many hours to spend in Pisa, you can definitely plan in a full day. In this article, I will share all the different options how to get from Florence to Pisa, how long they take and how much each option will cost you. And while not all of them work in reverse, I’ll also share what works best if you’re looking to get from Pisa to Florence.

How to get from Florence to Pisa

There are four different options to get to Pisa from Florence: by train, by bus, by rental car or as part of an organized tour, if you don’t want to deal with the logistics of planning and traveling independently in a foreign country.

Florence to Pisa by train

The easiest way to get to Florence to Pisa is by train. Trains run roughly every 15 minutes, and the ride takes about one hour.

Trains leave from the Florence train station “ Firenze Santa Maria Novella “. They arrive at “ Pisa Centrale “. The train station in Pisa is about 20 mins walking from the Leaning Tower. Pisa is a small city and very walkable. There’s also a bus that goes past the Leaning Tower, but the bus journey actually takes longer than walking because the route (Linea 21) goes in a big loop around the city. If you have mobility issues, there’s a hop-on hop-off bus during the summer months.

Note: Uber does not operate in Pisa.

I used Omio.com and TheTrainline.com to look up prices and train times – a couple of things to note about trainline (which I use to book train tickets all over Europe):

• As you can see below, some trains are slower than others. If you want to take the fastest train (45 mins) , it costs a little more. The fast train also offers 1st class seats for only a dollar more.
• Book your ticket in advance . Trains do fill up, especially during high season. It is also cheaper to buy your ticket in advance instead of buying it at a ticket machine in the train station.
• Remember to use the Italian spelling when you look up train times from Florence to Pisa – Firenze instead of Florence.
• If you book via Omio or Trainline.com, you can pay by credit card or via Paypal .

You can also book your ticket via the official Trenitalia website (Italy’s primary train operator). Tickets can be paid by Paypal, credit card and debit card.

Pisa to Florence by train

Of course, the above train ride also works in return – you can stay until late in the evening and have dinner in Pisa and still make it back to Florence before midnight.

The last train from Pisa to Florence leaves at 10.30pm and arrives in Florence at 11.50pm (duration 1 hour and 20 mins).

The last fast train from Pisa to Florence leaves at 9:32pm and arrives in Florence at 10:32pm.

Florence to Pisa by bus

There’s also a bus from Pisa to Florence, but I wouldn’t recommend it, unless you’re going directly from the airport, because that’s where the bus leaves from in Florence and it goes straight to Pisa airport . If you’re taking a budget flight from Pisa airport, this is a great connection. Alternatively, you can take the PeopleMover bus from Pisa Airport to the train station for 5 Euros and then take the train to Florence from there. The bus ride from the airport to the train station is only 5 minutes.

There’s also Flixbus , which takes you from the Villa Costanza Coach Station in Florence to the Fermata Flix Bus Station (Pietrasantina Park) in Pisa, and vice versa. If you’re lucky, you can score a ticket for US$4.99, but since they charge a $3.99 service fee on top of that and reserving an assigned seat is another $1.49, you’re not really saving any money by taking the bus. I also want to mention that the Coach Station is not in the city center of Florence, so you’ll also have to figure out how to get there.

Generally, the train ride from Florence to Pisa is more comfortable and you don’t risk getting stuck in traffic when taking the train, so I would 100% recommend taking the train over taking the bus. Especially since the price for a ticket is the same!

Florence to Pisa by car

We rented a car in Italy and drove around Tuscany without any problems, so if you already have a rental car, it’s an easy drive to Pisa, about 1 hour 15 mins, if you don’t hit traffic.

Note: You can’t drive inside the city walls, so you’ll have to find parking outside this area, which is known as ZTL (zona traffica limita – limited traffic zone). There are many parking lots in Pisa – some of them free, like on Via Ugo Rindi (near Via Piave) – a 10-min walk from the Leaning Tower. The largest parking lot near the Leaning Tower is the Via del Brennero (Via Paparelli) Parking, which has 750 parking spaces. However, you can’t use this car park on Wednesdays and Saturdays, because there is a market. This parking lot is about 20 mins walking from the Leaning Tower.

If you have to pay for parking, it’s usually less than 1 Euro per hour.

Florence to Pisa by organized tour

If you don’t want to deal with trains, buses or rental cars, and you want to make the trip to Pisa as easy as possible, consider taking an organized tour to Pisa from Florence. There are a number of tours that just offer day trips to Pisa, but you can also book a tour that includes several towns in Tuscany .

- Piazza Duomo

Your guide will lead you through picturesque small alleys before reaching one of the most famous sights: Piazza Duomo, where the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore stands. 

This imposing Gothic cathedral is enriched by one of the greatest masterpieces of architecture: the dome by Brunelleschi. 

Brunelleschi is one of the most important architects of all time. His studies on perspective and his appreciation for classical art represent the Renaissance spirit. 

The dome was Brunelleschi ’s greatest accomplishment. In some ways, it’s a very traditional building, but it’s also incredibly innovative.

Brunelleschi based his designs on the Pantheon in Rome, but created something truly original. The sheer size and scale of his architectural vision – as well as his remarkable building techniques – were a challenge to the Roman tradition.

- Piazza della Signoria

In the Middle Ages and Renaissance, Piazza della Signoria (Signoria Square) was the political heart of Florence.

This square is also an open-air museum, filled with magnificent buildings and statues.

There is no better place to learn about the history of Florence and its fascinating politics. Your guide will tell you the story of the Medici, the most influential family in Florence, and their contribution to creating the city’s identity. 

In the Renaissance, art was an expression of power. 

In Florence, it was mostly the expression of the power of the Medici, who commissioned some of the most famous artworks in the city. 

As you stroll through the square, you’ll admire the impressive facade of Palazzo della Signoria. Its entrance is decorated by a replica of Michelangelo’s David and by the Hercules and Cacus by Baccio Bandinelli. 

Next to the square, you’ll also see the Loggia dei Lanzi, a portico decorated with many important sculptures. One of the most famous is the impressive bronze sculpture of Perseus with the Head of Medusa by Benvenuto Cellini

- Ponte Vecchio

Running through the middle of Florence city center is the Arno river. 

After Piazza della Signoria, your guide will take you to the famous bridge known as Ponte Vecchio.

Ponte Vecchio is the oldest bridge in Florence, dating back to the Roman Age. 

This unique walkway across the river is also the location of traditional jewelry stores and goldsmiths. 

Above the stores, you can still see a corridor that connected the two main residences of the city rulers (Palazzo della Signoria and Palazzo Pitti), which allowed them to go between the two palaces without walking among the crowds. 

Ponte Vecchio is not only one of the most iconic sights in Florence, but also an important part of its history. It’s truly a must-see sight.

- Michelangelo’s David and the Accademia

2. Pisa (Campo dei Miracoli)

Once you arrive in Pisa, your driver will take you to Campo dei Miracoli in the historic city center. Here, you’ll have some free time to explore (about 20-30 minutes).

This unique square has some of the most iconic buildings in Italy: the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Duomo, and the Baptistery. 

Since you will soon have to get back on your ship, you won’t have time to enter the buildings. But you will have the chance to walk through Campo dei Miracoli and enjoy the magical atmosphere of this lovely city. 

It’s also a great location for taking pictures – the perfect way to remember your Tuscan trip.

Afterward, it will be time to get back in the car. Your driver will take you back to the port of Livorno, where you can continue with your cruise, sailing away with some wonderful memories of Tuscany.

The booking for these tickets is possible 45 days in advance,  the earlier the better – they run fill-up quickly . Be sure to bring photo ID if you have a ticket to climb the tower of Pisa.

Pisa , once served as one of the main Italian maritime republics , until the sand and sediment from the Arno river moved the shoreline towards what is now Livorno and your port of call.

From mysterious beginnings, this city is now famous worldwide for its  leaning bell tower , Pisa also boasts a beautiful cathedral, one of the earliest known universities (from the 1200’s), over 20 churches and home to many special talents like that of Andrea Bocelli.

We will start with an amazing panoramic view from above at Piazzale Michelangelo where you can see the major monuments and the Florence skyline . We will skip the lines and  view the white marble statue David by Michelangelo , as well as many other famous sculptures and paintings at the Accademia. ( The museum is closed on Mondays ).  

Our walking tour of the city will include visiting the  Cathedral Santa Maria del Fiore  (outside only) and the  Baptistery  which is located in front of the marble facade of the church. We will also explore the antique, cobbled-stone streets of Florence and view  Piazza Signoria , the impressive town hall from the 14th-century,  Ponte Vecchio  which spans the  Arno River ,  Dante’s house  and the beautiful church of  Santa Croce , the final resting place for several of Florence’s illustrious giants – like that of Michelangelo and Machiavelli.

The capital of Tuscany,  Florence , is a gem to behold. It’s antique origins reach as far back as the Etruscans and Romans and the city streets are filled with subtle reminds of their influence. The Medici family had a large influence on its growth to power and epicenter for the arts. They were experts amassing funds to conquer neighboring towns (including Pisa) and known as great patrons to the arts, which are the basis for many of their renowned museums including the Accademia and the Uffizi Gallery.

Pisa or Florence? Which Tuscan City Should I Visit?

So, will it be Pisa or Florence? Both of these Italiano towns are up there with Italy’s bucket-list locations, there’s no doubt about that. They each host eye-watering sights, from leaning towers to great cathedrals. They both ooze charm and character, offering cobbled alleys brimming with trattoria and cafes, along with age-old churches and bustling piazzas.

There’s actually history here. Florence and Pisa had beef for much of the 14 th century, when they fought bloody skirmishes like the Battle of Cascina (famously painted by a certain Michelangelo). Later, Pisa was joined into the Republic of Florence, cementing one’s status as the first city of Tuscany and the other as a largely cultural hub with a prestigious university.

Truth be told, we think both towns should be on any list of must-sees in Italy . They’re enthralling bouts of history and art that sum up the riches of the Tuscan region. This guide is for those who only have time for one. It picks out five key aspects of each to weigh up which is best for you this year. Benvenuto!

Pisa or Florence for sightseeing?

City breaks in Italy and sightseeing are a match made in heaven. Even the uglier towns on The Boot are hardly ugly at all. Most come loaded with some sort of 500-year-old palazzo or intriguing church. And when it comes to Pisa and Florence, you’re talking two of the most famous, most iconic, most stunning cities there are in the whole country.

Let’s begin in the Tuscan capital. Florence spreads over the Arno River from a hilly district of botanical gardens into a downtown UNESCO site: The Historic Centre of Florence . That’s a sightseer’s dream come true. At its center is the hulking Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, a 13 th -century duomo that’s regularly hailed as the most perfect in the country (a country that’s riddled with duomos, that is!).

Check the roof, which is topped by the glimmering outline of Brunelleschi’s Dome. Or look west to the octagonal Baptistery of St. John, a Lombard-style shrine with mosaic interiors and a 1,000-year story to tell. From there, a jaunt to the Arno River is a must, taking you through the narrow streets to the Ponte Vecchio, Florence’s iconic jeweler’s bridge. That’s also where you’ll find the immense Uffizi Gallery . One of the finest art collections in the world resides within, including works by Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli.

Pisa certainly isn’t short on sights but there’s really one that stands out from the crowd: The Leaning Tower of Pisa. That slightly sloping campanile is much more than just a crooked belltower. It’s become the veritable symbol of the city and one of the most iconic sights in the whole of Europe. The good news is that it rises smack dab in the middle of the Piazza del Duomo, another UNESCO World Heritage Site and the main nerve center of sightseeing here.

So, after you’re done with the compulsory keeping-up-the-tower pic, be sure to turn your gaze towards the stunning cathedral and baptistry, both of which were built between the 1000s and 1300s! The old town area spreads south and east of the Leaning Tower of Pisa, through grand lanes of bistros. Head that way and you should eventually come to the big Piazza dei Cavalieri, where mighty Renaissance palaces and equestrian statues loom on high. Also don’t miss Pisa’s premier museum, the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, which chronicles the artistry of the mighty church and its belfry.

Winner: Florence. Pisa has no shortage of sights, but Florence is the cultural capital of Italy, so it’s got to win here.

Pisa or Florence for ease of travel?

Pisa and Florence are both in the same region: Tuscany. They’re both tucked under the Apennine Mountains north of Rome, close to the very heart of the country. But most important for travelers who are yet to arrive in the land of pizza and pasta? They both have their own airports.

Despite Florence being the regional capital, Pisa International Airport is actually the busier of the two arrival points. It’s the 10 th busiest airport in Italy as a whole, with connections that come in from all over Europe, along with some long-haul links to Doha (connecting to the Far East) and one or two going south to Africa. However, by far the most prolific carrier here is Ryanair. That budget option runs year-round connections to major hubs like London Stansted and Brussels, bolstered by oodles of seasonal links to the likes of Frankfurt, Fez, Ibiza, and Warsaw.

The airport in Pisa is located on the south side of the city, close to the entrance to the main E80 motorway that runs up the Italian west coast. Pisa isn’t directly on Italy’s high-speed train line, so you’ll need to link via Florence if you want to ride the 300km/h locomotives from the Eternal City. That said, there are some direct Regionale or Frecciabianca trains that complete the route in a couple of hours.

Florence has a smaller airport than Pisa. It sits about four miles to the north-west of the historic center of the city, just on the cusp of the mountains. It misses out on the most famous names in the low-cost industry (namely Ryanair and easyJet) but does have some budget arrivals thanks to Vueling. Other popular connections in include the hop from Heathrow with BA and the link to Schiphol with KLM.

Generally speaking, though, there are fewer summertime flight arrivals into Florence than its compadre to the west. On the flip side, Florence is a major kingpin on the Italian rail network. The uber-fast Frecciarossa trains pass through here from Milan, Venice, and Rome, so there are links to the capital and other awesome Italian towns basically every hour of every day. Oh, and Florence lies on the course of the main E35 motorway, too. That’s the backbone of Italy that goes south to Naples and north to Milan.

Winner: Draw. Pisa has more flight arrivals for sure, but Florence is easier to get to by train and car.

Pisa or Florence for food?

It’s no secret that food is concern numero uno for lots of travelers bound for The Boot of southern Europe. Hey, this is the home of pizza and pasta, after all! Thankfully, neither Pisa nor Florence will disappoint on that count. Both of these cities are Tuscan to the core. And that means Tuscan food and all the rich red wines and earthy dishes that goes with it.

Florentine cooking is heavily influenced by the fertile valleys and the rugged Arezzo hills that surround the city. They’re a figurative breadbasket of mushroom-filled forests, winelands, organic farms, and tomato plantations. Already tempted? Just wait until you see the stacked stalls of the Sant’Ambrogio Market and the Mercato Centrale, where butchers hang smoked porchetta meats and vibrant courgetti flowers are piled high. There are also some key dishes that everyone visiting Florence should try:

• Bistecca alla Fiorentina – One of the thickest-cut steaks you’ll ever see, simply grilled with wild herbs like rosemary and always served with a compulsory glass of Chianti.
• Lampredotto – Bear with us here, because this meat-packed sandwich is made from the fourth stomach of a cow, stewed in broth, and mixed with herbs. It might not sound great, but you’ll be queuing for more!
• The wine – Florence is much closer to the heart of the Tuscan wine regions than Pisa. Head south to enter the protected growing area of Chianti (arguably the most famous in the country). Keep going and you’ll come to the stunning Val d’Orcia.

Pisa is further west and closer to the coast. It’s also nearer the wooded hills of the Apuan Alps. The upshot? There’s a real intermingling of influences in the cuisine, coming from different terrains and farms and growing techniques. There’s still a touch of the hearty cucina povera of Florence, only here the menus are infused with Ligurian seafood and shellfish, truffles from Barga and Lucca, freshwater fish from the Arno valley, rich Tuscan wines – the list goes on and on. Some local specialities include:

• Sullo scio – A mix of chopped tagliatelle pasta, rosemary-infused tomato sauce, chickpeas, and garlic. Very tasty and very local.
• Stuffed eels – Not our cup of tea at all, but hey, if you like garlic-filled eels fresh out of the Arno River, be our guest!
• Pisan beef skillet – Heavy beef cuts in thick tomato, red wine, and spiced sauce, often served with parmesan cheese and truffle.

Winner: Florence, but only because it’s nearer to the wine regions. Basically, you’ll eat well ANYWHERE in Tuscany.

Pisa or Florence for day trips?

Unless you’re planning on a straight city break to either Pisa or Florence, the chances are you’re going to want to see a little bit of the Italy that surrounds these cities. Or let’s put it this way – if you’re not yet planning a day trip out to the countryside during your trip but do have the time, what are you thinking!? Some of the most stunning portions of The Boot are on the doorstep here.

Pisa is best situated for explorations throughout western and northern Tuscany. That’s a very intriguing region; very different to the rolling farms and fields that appears on the postcards. There are soaring mountains in one direction, sparkling seas in another, and rustic hill towns to the south, so you’ve got plenty of options. We should also mention that Florence is one of the most popular daytrip destinations from Pisa. A quick train that takes just a whisker over an hour links the two multiple times per day. Of course, that also works in the other direction. Other options for excursions from Pisa include:

• Lucca (30-minute drive) – An absolutely stunning medieval city that’s encircled by high walls and has big central towers, Lucca was once a very powerful state to rival both Pisa and Florence.
• Apuan Alps (1-hour drive) – Prepare to be stunned by the mountains that dominate the far northern reaches of Tuscany. Called the Apuan Alps, they often look like the Alps proper, offering jagged marble bluffs, ancient quarries, and wooded hiking trails that always seem to be empty.
• Cinque Terre (1.5-hour drive) – See the iconic pastel villages of the Ligurian coast. Pure romance.

Outings from Florence are really all about experiencing the rustic landscapes of inland Tuscany. The region extends only a little to the north and east from here, where it creeps into the depths of the wild Apennines. To the south is wine country par excellence. We’d say both directions have their draws, including:

• San Gimignano (1-hour drive) – Arguably the most enchanting hill town in Tuscany, San Gimignano is a series of towers and terracotta-hued houses clustered on a cypress-ringed hill. You won’t want to leave.
• Chianti (1.2-hour drive) – Calling all wine lovers, Chianti stretches south from Florence. Offering endless wineries and agrotourism B&Bs, it’s perhaps the premier wine valley in the country.
• Siena (1.5-hour drive) – Some say Siena is the most stunning city in the world, let alone just Italy. We love the bustle of it, especially in August when the Palio is in full swing.

Winner: For us it’s Pisa because of the variety you get with the mountains and the coast.

Pisa or Florence for price?

There’s not really that much in it when it comes down to the cost of a vacation in Florence compared to the cost of a vacation in Pisa. That’s mainly because these cities are so close together, and both are big tourist draws. Neither is cheap. In fact, they are among the priciest destinations in Italy, with only Rome, Milan, and Venice topping them. Most estimations put the average cost of a seven-day trip somewhere in the region of between $1,600-2,000 per person.

Hotels in Florence are notorious for costing a packet. You’re probably looking at around €85-200 ($99-230) for something in the midrange category in the high season summer months if you want to stay in the historic quarter or nearby. It’s close to that in Pisa, but you can score boutique B&Bs in the center starting at about €70 ($81) per night, so just a touch cheaper perhaps.

Food wise, you can expect to pay a whole load more when eating in the main tourist areas (that’s around the Piazza del Duomo in Pisa and in the historic center in Florence). The problem is that Florence’s tourist center covers pretty much the whole city, so you’ll need to move to areas like Santo Spirito or San Marco to catch the budget eats there.

Winner: Pisa, but only just.

The verdict

Florence and Pisa are two of the most fascinating cities in Italy. They’re also super close together, so we’d say try to visit both – a train links them in just over an hour, you know? If that’s not doable, then it’s really 50/50. Pisa has the leaning tower and a more chilled town vibe, and it’s close to mountains and the sea. Florence is better for entering the Tuscan winelands and is much more of a full-on city. It really comes down to what you’re after.
