Auckland - Rangitoto Island Volcanic Explorer - Everyday AND Auckland Shore Excursion

  • Duration: 5 Hours (approx.)
  • Location : Auckland, Auckland
  • Product code: AKL - SX - RIVE

Journey through rugged lava crop on board a 4WD road-train, while learning all about the 600-year-old volcano’s fiery past. You’ll arrive at the base of the summit, and from there it’s just a short climb to the very top for epic views.

Return ferry – The tour includes return ferry journey to Rangitoto Island from downtown Auckland - right around the corner from where all ships dock (with the exception of Ovation of the Seas, a slightly longer walk from the Viaduct Events centre tender point, then over the drawbridge, past Princes Wharf).

Journey on a 4WD road train - Once you arrive on Rangitoto Island, pass under the hand-carved waharoa (gateway) and make your way to the road-train parked just alongside the wharf, where your ranger guide will greet you. Board the train, and enjoy the ride through the lava fields and native forest.

Final climb and scenic views - The tour vehicle will take you to the base of the summit cone, where there are approximately 300 boardwalk steps which lead you to the summit for amazing 360-degree views of Auckland Harbour and the Hauraki Gulf. For your descent, the road-train travels the western side of the island and in time for the return ferry.

Historical commentary - Your knowledgeable guide will recount the island's unique history. Learn about the major eruption that formed the volcanic peak, and the human past – from Maori settlements to historic bach communities built in the 1930s.

  • Half Day - tour duration including ferry travel is four hours
  • Guided 4WD road train tour through 600-year-old volcanic landscape
  • Transport to the base of the summit, and short climb to the top for panoramic views
  • Commentary about island's history and geology
  • Return trip to the wharf via the western side of the island
  • Return ferry to Rangitoto Island from downtown Auckland

A reasonable level of fitness is required for the walk to the summit. Please note there are approximately 300 boardwalk steps. The walking part of this tour may not be suitable for pregnant women, or people recovering from surgery.

Exploring Rangitoto: Auckland's Volcanic Island

fullers rangitoto volcanic explorer tour

Thanks for all the information, is really well documented! I´ll be visiting Rangitoto for sure after reading your post. I´m going to Auckland in February and wondering what type of clothes should I take? I know is summer time, but I´ve read that climate can vary a lot. Thank you!

fullers rangitoto volcanic explorer tour

Hi Ana! Thank you very much. I visited Rangitoto on the first week of March (tail-end of summer in the Southern hemisphere) and it can get warm during that time of the year. Also, the trail is composed of basaltic rocks that emit heat, so I recommend you wear light clothing and bring plenty of water. It is also true that Auckland weather can really get unpredictable, so I suggest to check the weather forecast too. But in general, Auckland weather is the best in February. Wishing you a great trip ahead! Cheers!

Rangitoto Island

Formed by volcanic eruptions around 600 years ago, Rangitoto Island is the newest in the Hauraki Gulf island group situated around 8km northeast from Auckland, and is considered a natural icon of the capital city. The large circular island is connected to Mototapu Island by a causeway but can only be reached for a day trip by ferry or water taxi from Auckland.

Rising 259m above the sea, the most popular activity on Rangitoto Island is the two-hour return hike from Rangitoto Wharf to the summit of the extinct crater for 360-degree views of Hauraki Gulf, Auckland city and Waitemata Harbour. There are also several short and long walks around the island to take in the unique volcanic geography of the island, which includes flowing lava fields, native bushlands and the largest pohotukawa tree forest in the world with over 200 species of plants including moss, ferns, flowering varieties and trees. The island is home to native seabirds and whales and dolphins can be observed throughout the Hauraki Islands.

Due to its unique natural attributes, Rangitoto Island is considered a treasure island for conservation purposes and visitors are asked to ensure this public reserve remains pest-free. Accommodation is not available on the island however there are a few bach (small beach house) communities which were built around Rangitoto Wharf, Islington Bay and Beacon End which date from the 1920s and '30s with private holiday homes and boatsheds as well as a community hall, tennis courts and swimming pool. Visitors can swim in the pool located at the wharf or at Islington Bay.

Fullers ferries make the 25-minute trip to Rangitoto Island daily at set times. The ferry terminal is located at 99 Quay Street in downtown Auckland, and tickets for the return trip are NZ$28 for adults and NZ$14 for children. The Rangitoto Volcanic Explorer Tour is also available for NZ$60 for adults and NZ$30 for children aged five to 15, and under-fives are free if sitting on an adult's lap. The five-hour tour includes the return ferry trip and a guided tour around the island by 4WD road-train.

The Rangitoto Island Volcanic Explorer Tour is a must see attraction...

It's strange to think you will tour New Zealand's youngest volcano and see how the last eruption created this popular tourist destination in Auckland. We toured the island on a tractor and trailer (the only suitable transport) and made our way to the walkway - then walked up what seemed hundreds of steps to the top. Well rewarded by the most spectacularly stunning 360 views which were made better on this clear and sunny day. Our guide was knowledgeable and knowing a little about the history of Auckland's "volcanic" past made it all the more meaningful. We were pleased to hear it is now extinct!!

Great boat trip. Have been many times. Picnics at Mckenzies Bay (Rangitoto Lighthouse) by private boat Rangitoto Wharf by ferry. Or Islington Bay by ferry. They all have tracks to the top (Great view on a clear Day)

My friend and I had so much fun hiking up Mt. Rangitoto and seeing the fantastic views from the summit. The hike itself is not hard at all, but still feels like a workout, which was perfect for us. We were lucky that we did not miss the ferry which comes to the Island only about 4 times a day, the last time it comes to the island is around 4pm so make sure to plan ahead and keep an eye on the time.

Try and go on a still, calm and sunny day. Auckland does have quite a few of these! Reasonable fitness is required. Children love the the lava caves and the thrill of helping the older generation!! We climbed straight up the face of Rangitoto and were amazed at the regrowth of the flora. Hadn't been on Rangitoto for probably 20 years. Lunch on the top was magic. Don't forget a packed lunch and something to drink. We had caught the 10am ferry over and planned on returning to Auckland on the 3pm one. We took a longer route back to the ferry and walked through acres of scoria fields. Worth the effort.

A thirty minute ferry trip from Auckland City and you arrive at Rangitoto Island. The climb to the viewing points at the top of the island provides fantastic views over the Hauraki Gulf but you need to be reasonably fit as the climb up to the summit is quite steep. The other option is to take the volcanic explorer. Bring plenty of food and drink and enjoy the wonderful island.

It's a volcano and you can climb it! Experienced hikers will not find this difficult. The trail could be a little better marked. Although we did go from a lesser used pier as there was unusual wind that day. If you're not sure, like I wasn't, then follow the crowd. The terrain never lets you forget that you are climbing a volcano because of the black jagged rocks on nearly the entire path. Visiting the lava tubes is an absolute must. The signs point you to one set of tubes that you can walk through very comfortably, but there are more tubes in the area! They require getting down and dirty though as you'll have to crouch or even crawl through them. Not recommended for anyone who is hesitant. The darkness and uneven, low ceilings makes it easy to hit your head. Finally the crater on top makes you know for certainty if you ever had any doubt that you just climbed a volcano. It long cooled, so it's grown over with trees, but its still easy to recognize. Video of my trip in Auckland including Rangitoto https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vN-tYOtDRZU

Moscow: City Sightseeing by Car/Bus

Visiting a new city is akin to going on a first date, it is something you will never forget. Many people imagine Moscow as just a bunch of sporadic landmarks: Red Square, the Kremlin, Lenin’s Mausoleum and GUM. There is so much more to this wonderful city than that and even though we only have a few hours, we will do all we can to show you everything we know and love about our capital in one fell swoop. We will take you on a journey through the ages, from centuries ago, right up to the modern day, soaking in the sights of this vast and bustling metropolis. Bright, luxurious and both ancient and modern at the same time, Moscow invites you on a date you’ll never forget!

On our sightseeing bus tour of the city, you will see:

  • The wonderfully historic city centre and its unique museums, magnificent cathedrals, the exquisite Chambers of the Romanov Boyars and of course, the famous towering red brick walls of the Kremlin, The charming beauty of the Alexander Garden awaits the capital's guests - a lush green oasis in the midst of the glass and concrete clad metropolis, basking in the etherial aura emanating from the whitewashed stone walls of the restored Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the world- renowned fairytale onion domes of St. Basil's Cathedral and other impressive monumental buildings such as the library built in Lenin's honour - the Russian State Library - and the State Duma.
  • The Lubyanka KGB headquarters is notorious to members of older generations and although nowadays, the face of the secret police has changed dramatically, the looming enigmatic building on the waterfront maintains its aura of mystery, shrouded in a variety of murky rumours and dark myths. Then, there’s another of Moscow's main attractions - the marvellous Bolshoi Theatre, yew simply cant leave Moscow without taking in its breathtaking architecture. Engrained in the fabric of Russia's cultural heritage, virtuoso performers such as prima ballerina Galina Ulanova, opera singer Feodor Chaliapin and pianist, composer and conductor Sergei Rachmaninoff once stood centre stage of this vaunted institution.
  • The memorial complex on Poklonnaya Hill was constructed in the glory and honour of our heroes who defended our nation in the many crucial battles of the Great Patriotic War (WWII). This is a place that embodies a particularly acute and inextricable link between older ancf younger generations. Moving on to the Moscow International Business Centre, not dubbed ‘Moscow City' for nothing, a true glimpse of the future in the present. This incredible, rather jaw-dropping project in the capital has shown that Moscow has come to accept the age of the skyscraper. Finally, the stunning views from the observation deck at Sparrow Hills will leave professional and amateur photographers alike itching to capture them. How could one resist?

On your first day, you’ll be treated to a panoramic, drive-by tour of Moscow to get a feel for the immense scale of one of the world’s most rapidly developing urban centres. The city’s history unfolds in real-time as you pass lavish imperial mansions, solemn Soviet structures and luxurious modern shopping centres.

Day two kicks off exploring Moscow’s historic centre on foot, followed by a tour of the Kremlin, the seat of Russian power and political intrigue for centuries. Stand in the Red Square, surrounded by the stunning architecture as you hear stories of the people and events behind many of Moscow’s most iconic landmarks.

On your final day, we’ll head beneath the city for a tour of the Moscow Metro and its famously ornate underground stations. Art lovers should hit up one of Moscow’s many world-class galleries such as the Tretyakov State Gallery, the Pushkin Museum or Garage, Moscow’s cutting-edge contemporary art museum. History fans can follow a Soviet trail through the city including Stalin’s Bunker, while those seeking a more indulgent experience can browse trendy neighbourhoods like Kitay Gorod or shop for everything from fashion to kitsch souvenirs at the enchanting Izmaylovo Flea Market. Foodies can head to one of the countless speciality stores sampling vodka, caviar and chocolate.

Russia Moscow Tour

Day 1 Panoramic city tour

Welcome to the glorious capital of Russia, Moscow! You’ll be met by your driver at the airport and taken to your centrally located hotel.

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.
