Port Funchal cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Funchal, Madeira Island Portugal. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Funchal is the principal port and the capital and largest city of Madeira (Portugal's Autonomous Region / Archipelago), with population around 105,000. Funchal is also one of Because of Portugal's most traveled destinations due to its cultural importance and historical heritage. Madeira's total population is over 250,000.

As cruise port, Funchal is one of the world's most visited New Year's Eve destinations (featuring a grandious fireworks display) and is one of the call ports included in most voyages to Spain's Canary Islands leaving roundtrip from the UK.

Cruise ships berth very close to downtown - at around 20-min walking distance from the port. There are taxis available and sometimes a free ferry service across the dock. The seafront area features several floating restaurants. Funchal's historic downtown is marked by mosaic pavements, narrow cobbled streets, cozy cafes and bars, numerous restaurants and cafes and several large outdoor markets selling local produce.

Tourists can take the modern cable car up to picturesque Monte to see the Church of our Lady and then take wicker-work toboggan ride down previously cobbled streets. A taxi is needed to visit the Botanical Gardens. These tranquil gardens are laid out on terraces with views of Funchal and Ribeira de Joao Gomes Gorge. From Funchal tourists can visit the small fishing village of Camara de Lobos, the 2nd highest sea cliff in the world at Cabo Girao, or Riveira Brava, high up into the clouds to Encumeada, Sao Vicente, Pico do Arieiro, Santo da Serra.

Madeira is often described as the "Island of Eternal Spring." Situated off the coast of Morocco, Funchal is Portugal's other world. Entirely volcanic in origin, the peaks of Madeira stretch out of the sea from "valleys" in the ocean depths. The volcanic soil combines with mild climate to produce an abundance of green and multicolored vegetation. Along Madeira's centre runs a mountain chain providing a spectacular contrast to the fertile coastlands where principal crops like sugarcane, grapes and bananas flourish. Terraces of farmland extend into the hills and add tiers of green beauty to the landscape.

Madeira Airport Cristiano Ronaldo (aka Funchal Airport) is named after the Madeira-born football player. The international airport is located approx 13 km (8 mi) east-northeast of Funchal and serves mostly flights to European large-city destinations, mainly due to the island's importance as a vacation travel destination.

By annual traffic, Funchal Airport is ranked Portugal's 4th busiest (after Lisbon , Oporto and Faro-Algarve) and is operated by country's airport authority company ANA Aeroportos de Portugal. Regularly scheduled flights connect daily to UK ( London , Bristol , Manchester), Germany ( Dusseldorf , Frankfurt , Hamburg , Leipzig, Hannover , Munich , Stuttgart ), France ( Paris , Lyon , Nantes , Bordeaux , Marseille ), Belgium ( Brussels ), Portugal (Lisbon, Ponta Delgada Azores ), Spain (Canaries, Bilbao , Madrid ), Switzerland ( Basel , Zurich, Geneva), Italy ( Milano ), Luxembourg City .

Port Funchal

In August 2016, a wildfire through the Madeira island affected some of the cruise itineraries with included visit to Port Funchal (locode PTFNC). P&O Cruises canceled the Azura ship's August 11 call at the port, replacing it with a day at sea. The wildfire was caused by August's high temperatures and strong winds. It prompted the evacuation of over 1,000 (residents and tourists), destroyed around 40 homes near Funchal and killed 4 people. Due to the smoke, flights to and from Madeira Airport were also disrupted. The fire started on August 9 (allegedly by arson) at the S Roque parish. It quickly spread throughout the island's southern part and to Funchal.

On New Year's Eve (NYE / December 31, 2017), the Port had docked a total of 10 cruise vessels celebrating here the new 2018 with a grandious fireworks show. The ships included MS Balmoral ( Fred Olsen ), 3 AIDA ships ( AIDAprima , AIDAsol , AIDAvita ), Mein Schiff 2 ( TUI ), CMV Columbus , Queen Elizabeth ( Cunard ), Horizon ( Pullmantur ), Ventura ( P&O UK ) and Marella Dream ( Marella / Thomson ). During NYE 2019, the cruise port reported a record day with 13 ships for the fireworks show - Balmoral, Columbus, Marco Polo/CMV , Amera/Phoenix Reisen , Saga Sapphire , AIDAcara , AIDAstella , Mein Schiff 3/TUI , Zenith/Pullmantur , P&O Aurora , Queen Victoria/Cunard , Marella Explorer , Ocean Majesty/Majestic International .

On December 18, 2017, Galp Energia completed at Port Funchal the first-ever in Portuguese seaport refueling of an LNG-powered  cruise vessel ( AIDAprima ) carried out at a Portuguese port.

  • Owned by Carnival Corporation and operated by  AIDA Cruises , AIDAprima is supplied (bunkered) by Galp LNG. The liner has average daily consumption of 42.000 standard households. LNG for the ship was delivered via cryogenic cistern truck, maintaining the gas at very low temperatures. Port's LNG supply service is partnership with the Sousa-owned Gaslink company that specializes in transportation and logistics between mainland Portugal and Port Funchal.
  • Galp Energia is Portugal's only integrated oil and gas operator. The company specializes in oil and natural gas production and refining, marketing and sales, as well as power generation. In 2016, Galp Energia reported a turnover of EUR 15 million and Net Income RCA EUR 537 million. The company employs around 6500 people, has active presence in 11 countries, and operates 25 refineries and 1435S service stations.
  • In seaports, Galp provides low-emission bunker fueling through LNG supplies, having the capacity to refuel LNG-powered vessels at any seaport in Portugal. Logistics are via partnership with Grupo Sousa.

In 2017, AIDAprima (inaugurated in 2016) started a year-round scheduled itinerary program with 7-day cruises to Madeira and Canary Islands leaving roundtrip from Gran Canaria and Tenerife .

In July 2018 was inaugurated the weekly ferry service Madeira-Portugal mainland (between Funchal and  Portimao ). The service is provided by Naviera Armas and is available during the summer months only (thru late-September). Ticket prices are between EUR 29 (Madeira residents) and EUR 85 (non-residents).

For New Year's Eve 2018, in Port Funchal docked 10 different cruise liners bringing 34,000+ tourists. The largest among the visiting on Dec 31st vessels were Queen Victoria ( Cunard ), Ventura  ( P&O UK ), Marella Dream ( Marella UK ),  AIDAnova ( AIDA ), Zenith ( Pullmantur ), Balmoral  ( Fred Olsen ), Columbus and Marco Polo ( CMV ).

Ships to Madeira Island dock along a long quay at the harbor, located at just 20-min walking distance from downtown.

In 2022, the cruise port reported a record year with handled 323 ship calls, or +8% (25 more visits) in comparison to the pre-COVID 2019 (298 handled calls). The number of received tourists was 417730. APRAM (Madeira's Port Authority) also reported that due to weather or sea conditions, a total of 17 booked cruise berthings were canceled in 2022.

The approach to the harbor is pretty with an excellent view of the city and the wooded hills above it. From the dock, it is a good 15 to 20 (depending how far along the quay the ship is docked) minutes slightly uphill walk into the center of town. Not recommended for wheelchair users, as the pavement is pretty but uneven.

Along the coast to the left there are main hotels, including the famous Reid's, where Churchill was a frequent guest. Traditional high tea is still being served here (about 30 Euros). Many new 5 stars hotels have recently joined in this area.

Taxis from dockside to the center of town are Euro 7.50 per taxi.

There is a shuttle bus to the city center for $9.00 (return ticket), sometimes free, depending on the cruise line.

A new cruise terminal with gangways and a few shops is in place. No duty free. Free WIFI. Tourist information desk.

Sightseeing:

This city is the capital of the island of Madeira. Funchal, where rows of white houses climb the hillsides, is comprised of three distinct sections. The Old Zone, or Old Town, on the east side, boasts historic architecture. The west side is the "touristy" hotel area, with attractions like the Casino Gardens, Quinta das Cruzes Museum and bustling Carriera Street. Between the two you'll find the city center which brims with museums such as the Madeira Wine Institute.

Many nice webcams .

Tours Excursions Transportation:

There are buses (6 Euro for an all-day ticket) and reasonable priced taxis running along the coast road. The tourist information office has printed suggested routes.

Hop on Hop off bus : Open bus with two decks, drives you around the most beautiful and historical points of the Town of Funchal. The route lasts one hour and fifteen minutes in Funchal. Recorded information is available in Portuguese, English, German, French, Italian and Spanish. The ticket for this route is valid for a whole day allowing you to get on and off the bus whenever you wish. Most buses run a 20 to 30-minute schedule (yellow line), the blue line which runs to Camara de Lobos (a small fishing village of the past) runs less frequently. Be sure to flag these buses down when you want to hop on again!

Both buses stop at the cable car station (Teleferico), which provides a rather nice trip up the mountain. 16 Euro round trip and 11 Euro one way. Or go down with the Monte Toboggan . Still in use today, they attract thousands of tourists every year who want to make this exciting experience of sliding at high speed on narrow, winding streets down to Funchal. These two-seater wicker sledges glide on wooden runners, pushed and steered by two men traditionally dressed in white cotton clothes and a straw hat, using their rubber-soled boots as brakes. About 20 Euro pp.

Hiring a car is a good option as they are inexpensive and it is a relatively easy island to navigate. As you drive up the hills, the weather can change rapidly, with mist and rain reducing visibility and there are also, some narrow cliff top roads to cope with, which can be slow-going if you are stuck behind a tour bus, so allow yourself enough time, also to give you the freedom to stop at the many viewpoints and interesting villages.

Hiking the irrigation ditches, called levadas , is also a popular way to explore the island. There are hundreds of miles of walking trails along the levadas, some of which are strenuous: such watercourses are not unique to Madeira: what is unique is their accessibility and extent. You need only venture a little way off the main roads to begin to appreciate Madeira's myriad aqueducts - for their beauty, ingenuity of design and for the courage and determination needed to bring the concept to its present glory. The island's irrigation system now comprises an impressive 2150 km (1350 miles) of channels, including 40 km (25 miles) of tunnels - and the work started centuries ago.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here .

Nearby Places:

The volcanic island of Madeira is covered in colorful flowers and fruit trees. Madeira is a small island only 35 miles long and 13 miles wide. However, the rugged mountains and tortuous roads make it seem much larger. Just a speck in the Atlantic, some of Madeira's residents in outlying villages have never even been to the main city Funchal, much less to the mainland because of the ruggedness of the countryside. About half of Madeira's residents live in the picturesque capital of Funchal.

Câmara de Lobos : apart from its wonderful bay, has several points of interest such as Pico da Torre, Curral das Freiras, Boca dos Namorados, Boca da Corrida and Cabo Girão Skywalk. Camera de Lobos can be reached by bus from Funchal (5 km).

One of the most traditional feasts, and certainly the largest, is the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, which takes place on the 15th of August. It is incredible the amount of people who pay reverence to the Virgin Mary of Monte . If you are on the island at this time of the year you might like to go up there and get your own impressions. From 14 to 15 August This is considered the main religious folk festival in the region

The Church Our Lady of the Mount, patron saint of Madeira, is also very popular with pilgrims who come here to pray or fulfill vows by the tomb of Emperor Karl I of Austria. Karl I died in 1922 at Quinta do Monte, now called Quinta Jardins do Imperador or Quinta of the Emperor's Gardens. It is a lively celebration lasting two days and transforms the romantic, picturesque parish of Monte into one of the busiest places in Madeira, full of traditional food and drink stalls and plenty of music.

Shopping and Food

Most shopping streets in Funchal are all pedestrian areas and are very well maintained and are lined with sidewalk cafes and restaurants. Most stores remain open when cruise ships are in town. However, the boardwalk market is closed during siesta.

The locally caught Espada, Scabbard Fish, can be enjoyed simply grilled with lemon, or the more traditional battered version served with deep fried locally grown bananas! This is banana country! Do not forget to visit the local "Mercato" which is the center of town. Open mostly in the morning.

Madeira wines are labeled according to one of the four types of grape used: Sercial, pale in color and very dry; Verdelho, golden color with a medium dry taste; Bual, dark gold and medium sweet; and Malmsey, the original grape which produces a sweet wine with a rich chestnut brown color.

Soft drinks include fresh fruit juices, one of which, maracuja, is a particularly delicious passion fruit nectar.

Hop on hop of bus

Funchal also offers hop on hop of busses. They are not able to come to the pier, but they will send their representatives over. Aks them where to pick up the bus. This location will probably be about a 1,5 km walk or a 7,50 euro taxi ride. The nice thing about this service is that it goes further than the city of Funchal. They go along the coastline as well even towards Camara de Lobos.

Public Transport

Public transport in Madeira is a really nice and cheap way to go. A day ticket for public transport will cost you just under 6 euro. Single prepaid ticket 1,35 euro and on board ticket 1,95 euro. The tourist information has printed suggested routes to take with public transportation.

There a lot of hikes on the island. Most of them are on the Levada’s. These are irrigation ditches created by the slaves in the 15th and 16th century. It was created to get the water from the wet to the dry areas. Today these Levadas have become hiking paths. You need to plan a hike like this ahead and it is wise to contact the local tourism information for the latest updates on them.

The name Nun’s valley comes from the nuns who escaped Funchal through a secret, narrow footpath into the valley where they hid from the French pirates who invaded Madeira. The only road going to the village was made in 1959. It twists and turns through the valley and the scenery is amazing.

  • Safety, emergencies, and basics

Funchal is one of the most visited cruise port of call in the South European Atlantic itineraries during the Spring-Summer season with 597.818 passengers and over 300 cruise ship visits in 2019.

The cruise port of Funchal has a very appealing character. The port area is neat and well-kept. Overall, Funchal is safe; the locals are friendly, polite, and speak English well. Cruise passengers with walking difficulties will find it straightforward to wander around in Funchal independently. However, there are just a few things to do for those cruising with families.

Where is Funchal's cruise port

Funchal, the capital city of Madeira's archipelago (with a population of around 111,900), is located in the Southern European Atlantic region. The city and the cruise port are on Madeira Island's southern coast, on the Atlantic Ocean's shore.

Funchal is 608 miles (979 km) southwest of Lisbon on the coast of Portugal, 295 miles (474 km) north of Santa Cruz de Tenerife , and 603 miles (970 km) southeast of Ponta Delgada (Azores) ) .

Ships dock on a small dedicated cruise port with a breakwater parallel to the coast with quays for up to 3 vessels to berth. A fourth cruise ship may dock on a smaller pier on the shore, close to the CR7 Museum (Cristiano Ronaldo portuguese soccer player).

There is a terminal building in the port of Funchal. At the cruise terminal or just outside, passengers will find almost all essential services and amenities. Cruise visitors can walk to the heart of Funchal, which is no more than 1 mile (1.6 km) from the port. But you will find taxis right outside the cruise terminal charging €7.50 euros per taxi (up to 4 passengers) one way. And there is also a shuttle bus.

There is a shuttle bus in Funchal cruise port provided by the port authority charging US$9.00 (return). However, most upper-premium and luxury cruise lines offer the shuttle bus complimentary. The shuttle bus pick-up is just outside the terminal. The shuttle drop-off is in the historical city center, either or on the main street or a square. The shuttle bus drop-off locations have changed in recent years, and it would be misleading to specify one in particular.

Cruise terminal services and amenities

The cruise terminal is at the center of the long breakwater pier. Cruise passengers will find at the cruise terminal or right outside on the long breakwater the following services and amenities:

  • ATM and Money Exchange kiosk
  • Brochures and maps
  • Souvenirs, gifts, and local crafts vendors
  • International Press Kiosk
  • Taxis with sightseeing fares
  • Hop-on hop-off buses
  • Tuk-tuk sightseeing
  • Self sightseeing small electric cars

Cruise visitors can enjoy many attractions in Madeira independently, but cruise excursions are advisable to sites where a qualified guide will add extra awareness. You can easily explore the historical center of Funchal on your own, either on foot or with sightseeing services. Simply put, there are four possible ways to discover Funchal (Madeira):

  • Book a Shore Excursion
  • Sightseeing services
  • Taxi, Uber or Lift

At the time of publishing this review, both City Sightseeing and Yellow Bus Tours have been suspended due to Covid-19. However, both operated very successfully in Funchal in the past. And it is expected these services will be operational once cruising resumes. Click on the links below to check schedules and prices. Here are the sightseeing services for cruise visitors that usually run in Funchal:

  • City Sightseeing - hop-on hop-off
  • Yellow bus tours - hop-on hop-off
  • Tuk Madeira City Tours

MADEIRA’S no 1 OFFICIAL GUIDE since 1997

  • Funchal Port

Port of Funchal

Historically, the Port of Funchal exists since the end of the 19th century, although the construction of the modern port infrastructure itself was completed only at the beginning of the 21st century. During the archipelago's colonisation, for instance, the loading and unloading of goods and passengers was done directly on the pebble, being strongly conditioned by the state of the sea.

Due to the strategic geographical position of Madeira, in the centre of the Atlantic Ocean, near the Canaries and North Africa, until World War II Funchal Port was a stopover point for large ships, which used to stop here during their routes between Europe and the American and African continents. Thus, in the 20th century, besides being an important trading place, with the loading and unloading of goods and passengers, it gradually gained tourist relevance. Currently, the main port of Madeira island is particularly known for welcoming many cruise ships , which stop here and then continue their journey to other destinations.

Funchal city centre is within walking distance from the International Maritime Passenger Terminal ( Gare Marítima Internacional do Porto do Funchal ), an infrastructure that is extremely relevant to the increasingly competitive cruise ship segment.

Located at Pontinha pier, in a natural bay surrounded by the blue sea and the green mountains, it's impossible not to be touched by the impressive views when arriving by sea: besides an amazing perspective of the whole city, it becomes clear to you that this is a blooming island that rises spectacularly from the ocean towards the clouds. The terminal's modern construction offers more comfort, as well as better access and safety conditions for those arriving on the island. Thus, a high number of cruise ship passengers are able to embark and disembark more quickly and efficiently according to international safety regulations.

This port is very busy in the summer months, as well as in October and, of course, December, with the 31st being the busiest day of the year, as many cruise liners choose Funchal bay, already embellished by the Christmas lighting, as the stage of the New Year's Eve fireworks.

Funchal harbour also welcomes Lobo Marinho , the ferryboat that every day assures the maritime connection between the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo , with a duration of 2 hours and 20 minutes and the possibility of transporting vehicles.

Funchal, Madeira – A Cruise Port Guide

Funchal, Madeira

This popular cruise port features on many transatlantic cruise itineraries and is also a favourite destination for many winter sun cruises from the UK so we thought you would like a Funchal M

adeira Cruise Port Guide.

is the main town of an island in the Atlantic off the west coast of Africa but, oddly, as Madeira is part of Portugal it is therefore part of the EU and Schengen Zone. The island is volcanic and rises sharply out of the sea – making for a good deepwater port close in to the main town, Funchal and dramatic views of the cliffs, the airport and the mountains above when arriving and departing.

funchal cruise port arrivals

The harbour is quite small with only a single cruise ship docking at one time. There is a very small Cruise Terminal with little in the way of facilities except a taxi rank. There are no shops, Duty Free or free wifi. However you can use your UK contract phone data here if you have an EU roaming allowance.

Funchal Harbour

As always it is worth checking out if anything special is happening while you are in port also if there is a saints day which could affect opening hours. You will find lots of information here and there is a good downloadable map of Funchal here.

What is within walking distance of Funchal cruise dock?

Madeira is a great port stop as you can DIY a lot of things almost without losing sight of the ship! There is a lot that you can see that just a short walk into town from the Cruise Terminal.  From the ship it is a 20 minute uphill walk into town, the pavement is uneven and the walk not recommended for wheelchair users. Taxis from the ship to the centre of town are €7.50 per taxi. But you don’t even have to leave the port for the first place worth noticing, you will pass it before you reach the end of the harbour arm!

Nini Design Centre

  • Nini Design Centre This Design Centre opened in late 2015 dedicated to the work of Nini Andrade Silva, a famous interior designer, born in Funchal and trained in Lisbon. There is a permanent exhibition of her work, spaces for temporary exhibitions, a shop, a restaurant and a cafe with spectacular views. Open from 11.00 every day & worth a visit more here.

Whale Watching

  • Whale Watching

tours run from Funchal harbour. The deep waters around Madeira and nearby Islands contain almost 30 species of cetaceans including Common Dolphins, Atlantic Spotted Dolphins, Bottlenose Dolphins, Striped Dolphins, Pilot whales, Fin whale, Bryde’s whales, Killer whales and Sperm whales. Trips take place all year round depending on weather conditions, find out more here.

in addition to whale watching there are shorter, gentler tours that may include swimming stops in summer. More info on all types of boat trip here .

Cocktails at Reids Hotel

  • Reids Hotel

If you walk away from the port and up to the left you will reach the famous hotel Reid’s whose walls are adorned with pictures of the famous people who have stayed there such as Sir Winston Churchill who was a visitor in 1950. Other well known guests, whose signatures are in the hotel’s Golden Book (kept safely locked away) include Empress Zita of Austria, King Edward VIII (the Duke of Windsor)  Princess Stephanie of Monaco, Antarctic explorers Ernest Shackleton and Robert Falcon Scott, actors Roger Moore and Gregory Peck, writers Rainer Maria Rilke and George Bernard Shaw.

Traditional high tea here is very popular and many ships include a visit in the itinerary. Just a warning, groups are served in the newer extension to the hotel so if you want to eat tea (or lunch with cocktails) on the famous terrace overlooking the harbour I recommend looking relatively smart, arriving by taxi & booking in advance (you need to book an early seating, tea starts at 3.00 – check the ships departure time to be sure how long you’ve got). Otherwise you will gently be directed to the newer extension which has a similar view but is not as special. More here.

is really colourful with some vendors in traditional local dress and is worth a visit. This is a mixed fruit, vegetable, flower and fish market, just inland from the cable car station. Look out for some vibrant woven local bonnets on sale… Open from 7.00 to 7.00pm Monday to Saturday

Dried Chillies for sale in Funchal Market

  • The Madeira Story Centre

is quite close to the market. An interactive museum covering Madeira’s history, it has a Bistro with a terrace and is open 10.00 to 19.00 seven days a week

11.png

  • Funchal Cathedral is about the same distance from the market but in the opposite direction and worth a visit if you are nearby ( you could walk this way from the toboggan rides too). The brown and white building with late Gothic architecture has nave and side aisles and dates back to 1485. It has an impressive Mudéjar ceiling with geometric and animal designs carved into cedar and juniper wood and inlaid with ivory. It is probably the oldest building on the island
  • Museu CR7 Stay on the flat and walk around the port to the right you will reach the Museu CR7 , a museum dedicated to Madeiras most famous resident Cristiano Ronaldo and his footballing career highlights and trophies. He is a very popular local resident and supports many island events and institutions for example the hotel built above the museum is owned by a partnership between Ronaldo and local Pestana Group.

What can I do on a hike or bus from Funchal cruise dock?

12.png

  • Madeira Cable Car .Keep walking past the CR7, the marina and along the Avenue Do Mar to reach the Madeira Cable Car , it is about a half an hour walk from the ship (buses aren’t very convenient and would take just as long) or a 9 minute taxi ride. The Cable car costs 11€ one way or 16€ return. This takes you up to the Spa town of Monte for

Monte Palace Tropical Garden

  • Monte Palace Tropical Garden

The magnificent 70,000 sq meter Monte Palace Tropical Gardens are also accessible by bus and car and will fill a few hours easily. Thisvery carefully maintained garden of has several styles with a huge exotic plant collection as well as ponds where you can see Koi fish, swans and ducks. There is also a Museum with sculptures, a famous mineral collection and a tile collection from palaces, churches and private houses throughout the former Portuguese empire. Entrance is €12.50 and there is a good coffee shop.

Monte Palace Tropical Garden

  • Nossa Senhora do Monte Church The 18th century Nossa Senhora do Monte Church sits at the top of a flight of 60 steps but this beautiful, richly decorated church is worth the climb! If you feel really fit you can then climb the church tower too for even more specula views! Inside the church you will find the tomb of the last Austrian Emperor Karl – the last of the Hapsburg family – who lived in exile in Monte until his death in 1922.

Nossa Senhora do Monte Church

The Fountain of the Virgin

17.png

Our Lady of Monte is the patron saint of Madeira and her image is in a niche at the entrance to Monte Municipal Park, also known as Leite Monteiro Park. This large public park has ancient trees, lovely gardens. a lake and bandstand. From here it is a short walk to…

The Jardim Botânico

The Jardim Botânico cable car

which takes you on across the valley to the Botanical Gardens. The cable car route is 1600 metres long and up to 100 metres high! The route takes nine minutes and has great views back down to Funchal Harbour and City as well as a fantastic view of the mountains and forest around João Gomes River.

Botanical gardens

The Jardim Botânico da Madeira

dating from 1881 these lovely gardens are on a steep slope with a wonderful collection of plants from all over the world, with colour all year round and excellent views over the Bay of Funchal from the garden terraces. This is accessible by taxi from the port and then you could take the cable car across to Monte and go back down to town on…

The Monte Toboggans

The Monte Toboggans

this is an adventurous way to get back back down to town! Originally these sledges were a fast means of transport to Funchal for the citizens of Monte and their goods. First used in the 1850s and still in use today, they attract thousands of tourists every year. The experience of sliding at high speed on the narrow, winding streets is exciting and unforgettable! The wicker sledges hold two people and glide on wooden runners guided by two men, traditionally dressed in white cotton suits and a straw hat, who use their rubber-soled boots as brakes. The downhill journey goes to Livramento & costs 30€ for two people. The 2km journey takes about 10 minutes reaching speed up to 48 km/hour. Adventurous, yet safe, an ‘old-fashioned’ toboggan ride to make your way down from Monte is the perfect contrast to the 20th century cable car ride going up and is great fun! You will find the Monte toboggans at the bottom of the stairs leading up to the Nossa Senhora do Monte Church Opening hours: Monday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm. Sunday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. From their end point you can take a local bus or taxi back to the ship or you could walk back down to the harbour in an hour or so which will take you past the Cathedral.

What should I do by private tour or cruise excursion from Funchal cruise terminal?

1.png

The island is very mountainous and rugged, land is so precious that you will see houses, crops and animals clinging to the side of the island. The new airport in the north of the island is worth watching out for as you cruise by… it is known to be one of the most hazardous airports in the world and definitely much nicer to see from the sea than it is to land on by plane!

Cliffs just past Camara de Lobos

Although distances in the island are small the roads are very mountainous so a drive will take longer than you think. You could certainly see a lot of the island with a days private tour, taxi or car hire. Driving laws are as in the UK although they drive on the European side of the road and you need to be confident on narrow mountain roads. There is one ‘motorway’ on the island but otherwise the roads are pretty tortuous. You will find branches of Europcar, Sixt and Hertz in Funchal as well as many local companies. A days car hire is quite reasonable and as it is within the EU relatively safe but if you’re not sure about driving then you could hire a taxi for the day or book a driver and guide. Various places you might want to think about visiting include…

Camara de Lobos

is a small and picturesque fishing port with a black, volcanic beach – about 8km south of Funchal

Camara de Lobos

is slightly further along the coast will bring you to one of the tallest cliff in the whole of Europe at 580m high. If you’re feeling brave (and it isn’t too windy!) you can walk out on the Skywalk, a glass platform suspended out over the drop!

Cabo Girao - would you dare…?

Walk the Levadas

As you travel the island you will notice that every inch that can be cultivated has been utilised. As part of this, there is a system of Levadas (irrigation Channels) that were created in the 16th century to take water from the wetter, windy North side of the island to the more temperate areas of the south. They run across the Paul de Serra plateau in the centre of the island and provide lovely shaded walks and waterfalls. From the car park at the Rabacal viewpoint you can walk or get a minibus to the forest station- depending on time available and fitness obviously! You should consider a guided trip here from the port as this gets you a long way off the beaten track!

The Levadas - an ancient irrigation system

Pico do Arieiro

is the highest point on the island which is accessible by car. It is about about 45 minutes drive from Funchal and you will find a cafe & gift shop at the viewing terrace. There are wonderful views but choose a clear day or you will only look down at the clouds!

Pico do Arieiro

is the islands highest peak. It is a tough 7km hike from Pico do Arieiro or drive on to Achada do Teixeira for a much gentler 2.8km uphill walk to the top, an estimated 3 hour round trip from the carpark. Details on short hikes in Madeira can be found here. As always, keep an eye on the time…….!!

Pico Ruivo

Scenic Tours

if you are happy to take a driver or tour there are many dramatic views, waterfalls, picturesque villages and wonderful bays all around the island. You will not find much in the way of facilities but you will find local restaurants and bars. A fun way to do it would be on a Motorbike and sidecar tour….

Motorbike and sidecar

I hope you enjoyed reading about how to spend your cruise stop in Funchal and that it will be useful on your cruise. Funchal features on many Transatlantic crossings, repositioning and Canary islands cruises – if you are looking for inspiration you could start here …

Funchal port guide: What to see, do & eat in Madeira city

Madeira cruise port calls are made to the splendid city of Madeira – here’s how to make the most of your time on the Portuguese island.

Words by Laura French

From colourful cobbled streets and elegant Baroque architecture to flower-bedecked gardens and quaint taverna patios, Funchal knows how to charm – and sailing into the port here is nothing short of spectacular, with dolphins frequently spotted bounding around the shore as the hills unfurl before you in swathes of lush green.

There’s history in abundance, from the Gothic remnants of the intriguing Old Town to the crumbling walls of the 17th-century fortress, and there’s plenty to do too, from tucking into a Michelin-starred meal to gliding above the city in a cable car.

So where should you start if you’re calling into this picturesque port on your next cruise? We’ve put together an insider guide to the key things to do, see and eat in the city, including the lesser-known spots to put on your radar.

How to get from Funchal cruise port to the city centre

Funchal cruise terminal is around a mile from the centre of Funchal, so you can walk into the city in around 15 minutes, or take a shuttle bus for around £7 return. You’ll also find taxis right outside the Madeira cruise port.

What to see and do from Funchal cruise port

Wander the zona velha.

At the heart of Funchal is its atmospheric Old Town – a mishmash of quaint, cobbled alleys where locals gather on taverna patios and bars and restaurants and boutiques spill out from candy-coloured buildings.

Unmissable here is the Sé Cathedral – a 15th-century Gothic masterpiece boasting an intricately-carved wooden ceiling and ornate altarpiece – and the Palácio de São Lourenço, a well-preserved fortress built in the 16th century, now home to a collection of art from Portugal and beyond.

It’s also the home of several museums – among them the Madeira Story Center, which explores the history of Madeira – and the Forte de Sao Tigo, an imposing, 17th-century citadel built to protect Funchal from pirates following an attack in 1566.

But the highlight has to be Santa Maria Street, an art-filled alley whose doors have been painted in striking murals as part of a project to revitalise the area; think a mermaid on a swing, colourful portraits and paintings depicting cultural traditions by artists from Madeira and beyond.

Explore the Mercado dos Lavradores

When you’re done pottering, swing by the colourful Lavradores market [below, left] to stock up on local produce – expect banana passionfruit, custard apples and monstera deliciosa (or ‘delicious monster’), an unusual-looking fruit that can only be eaten when ripe. You’ll also find plenty of products made from the island’s chestnuts, alongside freshly caught (if pungent) fish and various other delicacies; come on a Friday morning for the best turn-out.

Taste Madeira wine

Madeira has long been known for its fortified wines, and you aren’t short on places to sample the stuff in the city during a call to Funchal cruise port. Among the best-known spots is Blandy’s Wine Lodge, where guided tours can take you around the museum to learn more about the history of winemaking on Madeira – from its 16th-century origins to the present day – with a tasting included afterwards.

Also worth a visit when you cruise Madeira is H.M. Borges, founded in 1877 in a former cereal mill and one of only two companies in the city that produces the wine on-site, and Pereira D’Oliveira, which sells the oldest Madeira wines you can get (the first dates as far back as 1850, when it was founded).

Take the cable car to Monte

For picturesque views over Funchal and the surrounding valley on your Madeira cruise port stop, hop in a cable car from the seafront to reach Monte. This elegant, villa-lined neighbourhood is home to the Monte Palace Tropical Gardens [below, centre & right]– once the private residence of British Consul Charles Murray, now boasting lavish fountains, whimsical sculptures and exotic plants alongside a tranquil Japanese pond.

From here you can take a second cable car to reach the Madeira Botanical Garden, built in traditional Baroque style and boasting around 2,000 species of flora alongside sweeping views over the valley.

The real highlight, though, is the journey back down; traditional wicker baskets mounted on wooden skids leave from Monte, whisking you down the hills and into Livramento, just outside Funchal, on a ride to remember.

Swing by the beach

After some beach time on Madeira cruises? The island isn’t short on dramatic, black-sand beaches and there are several around Funchal; head to Praia Formosa, 10 minutes outside the centre, for a mix of pebbled and sandy shoreline, or swing by São Tiago, located in front of its namesake fortress, for shallow, swimmable waters dotted with colourful fishing boats.

Where to eat and drink in Funchal cruise port

When it comes to food and drink while exploring beyond Funchal cruise terminal, you aren’t short on options, with traditional tascas (small tavernas) rubbing shoulders with Michelin-starred spots and fine-dining haunts.

For authentic Madeiran dishes, great steaks and a lively atmosphere, head to local favourite Zarcos and order a side of milho frito, or maize cubes, then follow it up with passionfruit mousse (Madeira is big on maracuja).

Sentidos is well worth a visit for its fresh seafood – try the parrotfish – while Kampo deserves to be on the list if you’re looking to push the boat out, with small, creative plates spanning the likes of oxtail ravioli, fresh sardines and a truffle-stuffed, doughnut-like Berlin ball, all cooked in an open kitchen.

Just as impressive is Il Vivaldi, serving Mediterranean dishes in what feels like an opulent palace – think gold-framed mirrors and chandelier-esque light fixtures – and Armazem do Sal, dishing up the likes of black scabbard fish with lime risotto and filet mignon in romantic, low-lit wood-and-stone surrounds.

On the drinks front, you won’t go thirsty during your call at Funchal cruise terminal; Bar Number Two is one of the best places to try the island’s famous drink, Poncha – a deliciously sweet concoction made with aguardiente de cana, honey, sugar and orange or lemon juice – while the city’s growing craft beer scene can be sampled at FugaCidade, tucked away on a side street and serving Portuguese wines and cheeses.

For something a little more suave, head to Galáxia Skybar, set on the rooftop of the Savoy Palace hotel and featuring a galaxy-themed bar; think star-covered ceiling, sparkling LED lights and silhouetted mountain views to accompany mixologist-made cocktails. Try the Space Truck, made with Madeira wine, Campari and hazelnut-infused gin, for a toast you’ll long remember.

Saturday 20th April - Funchal

I managed to sleep for a few hours as the alarm was ringing at 12.30am. Left the house 2.15am to Bristol Airport, the journey was smooth and uneventful as no traffic on the road. There was no queue at the EasyJet bag drop (3.30pm) with no delays in security. The departure lounge was initially quiet but became very busy later on.

The 6.25am EasyJet flight boarded on time with a 3hrs 15 min flight time. The Airbus A321 neo the largest aircraft on EasyJet’s fleet was 5 years old and the flight was smooth and uneventful. I sat in row 28B which was one row in front of the emergency exit. This was a very unusual seat as there was a large space (the size of a seat) on the window side with two seats before the main corridor. The other seats had a 3-3 configuration. After an excellent flight landed at 9.50am, 20 minutes early.

After a short ten minute wait at passport control the baggage came off the plane very fast. Pre booked a private transfer with Madeira Airport Transfers, 24 euros. The driver was waiting in arrivals and the journey was fast and comfortable, arrived in the hotel at 11am. Unfortunately, an early check in wasn’t possible so walked into Funchal old town and had a drink and snack at O Tacho Da Velha restaurant on Rua Dom Carlos. I only ordered a drink and a chicken toasted sandwich but had to send the sandwich back as the chicken was extremely hard and the bread was dry and tasteless. Ended up returning to the Porto Santa Maria and enjoyed a lunchtime snack and spent a few hours relaxing around the pool. The weather was very pleasant with a mixture of sunshine and cloud & felt warmer than 23C. For further information on the hotel, see review below:-

Spent most of the day walking and returning to various places from my previous trips. Walked from the Porto Santa Maria along the promenade towards the lido area, Funchal looked as beautiful as ever with the palm trees, flowers and ocean views. Excellent weather with lots of sunshine. There were no cruise ships in the port and not many tourists around. Walked up the steep hill by the Pestana Carlton to the lido area passing Reid’s and the Cliff Bay . Called into the Porto Mare (stayed there for 10 days on my last visit nearly 2 years ago) and walked around the pool which looked as beautiful as ever. Also visited the Pestana Grand (stayed there four times), noticed the plants have grown in the garden, they were planted when the palm trees were cut down due to bad weather over three years ago. I will always have a soft spot for the Pestana Grand but it appears you can only book half board which is a shame.

Enjoyed a coffee in the Magic tea house, the butterflies are still flying around and prices continue to be very reasonable. Returned to Funchal along the coastal promenade and enjoyed the pleasant views of the ocean with lots of palm trees and flowers. Joined the main road back to Funchal and the weather started to cloud over but the temperature was perfect for walking (23C) with no wind. Called into the Beer House on the main promenade (delicious ice cream) and returned to the hotel. Didn’t venture far in the evening as enjoyed a light snack in the hotel. Excellent food and reasonable prices.

Monday 22nd April - Camara de Lobos

Caught the local Rodoeste bus to Camara de Lobos, see timetable below:-

https://www.rodoeste.com.pt/assets/front/pdf/schedules/locality/CAMARA%20DE%20LOBOS.pdf

Purchased the bus tickets from the kiosk next to the bus stop or you can purchase from the driver 2.20E. The weather fluctuated between long cloudy and sunny periods with a comfortable temperature 23C. The journey took 30 minutes due to heavy traffic, lots of bumps and twists and turns along the coastal road.

I have visited Camara De Lobos over ten times during the last 20 years and noticed a big difference as it more commercialised and much busier with lots of tourists. It’s the first time I’ve seen a very long queue of people waiting for a photograph by the statue of Winston Churchill. On the positive side it’s still pretty with lots of ocean views, just busier. Enjoyed a coffee in the Pestana Churchill Bay which was very pleasant and walked up the steps towards Funchal and enjoyed the beautiful views of the boats and ocean. The walkway to Funchal is still closed by the Orca Praia hotel. Walked as far as I could and caught the bus back to Funchal.

Funchal was very busy as there were two cruise ships with an additional 9,500 visitors on the AIDAcosma (German ship) and Marella Explorer . I looked at the cruise schedules and deliberately escaped the city which was an excellent idea. The restaurants were jam packed with visitors so ate in hotel which was a perfect and relaxing end to the day. For further information about the cruise ships, see link below:-

https://www.madeiraislandnews.com/2024/04/more-than-9500-people-arrived-in-funchal-on-board-two-ships.html

Tuesday 23rd April - Botanical Gardens.

Travelled to the Botanical Gardens by local bus (number 31) which leaves from Avenida Do Mar, opposite the Palacio S Lourenco on the promenade side. It’s also possible to catch bus 31A & 29, fare 1 euro 95 & tickets are purchased on the bus. Journey time approximately 20 minutes. Entrance fee 7 euros 50 cents. My last visit to the botanical gardens was in June 2005 & I couldn’t remember a great deal.

The gardens have more than 2,500 exotic plants from various parts of the world and covers an area of 80,000 m². Lots to see and do but you really need good mobility (steps, uneven ground, steep slopes) to see them at their best. In addition to the beautiful plants and flowers the views of the Bay of Funchal are fantastic, could even see the cruise ships in the background. The weather was glorious with lots of sunshine (24C). Walked around the gardens for over two hours and enjoyed a drink on the outside terrace, prices were reasonable. I had an excellent visit, the gardens exceeded my expectations but I would try to visit on a sunny day.

When returning to Funchal I walked up the main high street Avenida Arriaga and enjoyed an ice cream in the Ritz cafe which was very pleasant. Walked around the Municipal Gardens which were very pretty and colourful with different types of plants and strolled back the hotel.

Wednesday 24th April - Jasmin Tea House

Started the day with an early morning walk to see the sunrise directly outside the hotel. The sky had different shades of oranges and red with different reflections. The ocean was calm and still with expensive yachts and two big cruise liners on the opposite side. I also saw a large moon in the far distance above the Cliff Bay. Apart from a friendly Portuguese woman taking photos and the odd runner there weren’t any people around, the best time of day to take photos. The weather was similar to yesterday, lots of sunshine with a temperature of 26C.

After breakfast had a walk along the main promenade and saw the Cunard Queen Elizabeth cruise liner. When the cruise passengers started to arrive in large tour groups caught the 47 bus (final destination São João Latrão) to Jasmine Tea House on the Levada Dos Tornos halfway between Monte and Camacha. The bus fare was 1 euro 95 cents, journey time approximately 20 minutes. The stop for the tea house was nearly at the end of the line but a kind local woman pressed the bell to stop the bus. The bus was half empty & was full of locals with no tourists. The tea house is located on a quiet mountain road in the middle of nowhere with no shops or restaurants close by. The bus stop is directly outside the tea house at the bottom of the short steep driveway.

On arrival, climbed some steep steps (some uneven ground with a hand rail) and enjoyed a short levada walk which was very pretty with lots of green trees, plants and flowers with great views. Walked the same route back and enjoyed a snack and drink in the tea house. The tea house has a small garden with beautiful views and was very quiet, peaceful and relaxing. There were only two other guests in the tea house and I recognised them as I asked them if the Camara de Lobos promenade was open a few days ago, what a small world! Prices in the tea house very reasonable. I had a tea and two fruit scones with jam and butter. The scones were fresh and crumbly but the texture was not like an English scone as more like a cake. The tea was served in a china cup with a bright blue tea pot and red milk jug. There are also light snack options and various cakes including apple, lemon and banana all 3 euros. There is a blackboard with the bus times back to Funchal. I had an excellent visit and would definitely recommend if you want to visit somewhere different with not many tourists.

Thursday 25th April - Funchal to Madeira with EasyJet

Time to wave goodbye to Madeira and travel back to Bristol. Madeira Airport Transfers arrived a few minutes early at 8am for the journey back to the airport. The roads were extremely quiet due to a bank holiday and the journey back to airport was fast and smooth. There was a small queue in the EasyJet bag drop but security was fast. I watched planes land on the outside terrace, saw the incoming aircraft land early. A perfect day for flying with a mixture of sun and cloud with no wind. After passport control boarding was very disorganised and confusing with long queues and people standing everywhere in a small space with not many seats.

The flight departed promptly at 11.30am with a flying time of 3hrs 15 min. The aircraft was under a month old and the flight was smooth. Landed in Bristol 10 minutes early at 2.50pm. Another excellent flight with EasyJet, 10/10.

You’ve obviously had a good break. I only wish the page forward links were at the top so no need to scroll all the way down every time. Did you avoid the mosquitos at the botanic gardens? The cafeteria beside those frog pools seemed to be rife with them. Still got the scars.

Glad you’re all continuing to enjoy the report.

Steve - Had no mosquito bites. Thinking about it, the pond by the cafeteria is probably a magnet for mosquitoes but the thought didn’t cross my mind. I hope your scars disappear soon.
