Event Details

George Ezra continues his phenomenal ascent with the announcement of his first ever headline arena tour. The tour takes in 10 arena shows across the UK, culminating in two shows at The O2 next March.

“WE’RE GOING ON TOUR!” says George. “And not just any tour, the biggest run of dates that I will have ever played, ending at The O2. Touring these new songs along with all of the first album has meant that the last year has been the most amazing twelve months imaginable, to all of you that have made a show so far, thank you. And to all of you that we will see next year, hold tight! Get practicing those songs, polishing off your dancing shoes, let’s make it one to remember.”

The announcement comes fresh from George headlining Boardmasters Festival and ahead of his long since sold out autumn 2018 UK tour this November. His acclaimed number 1 album Staying At Tamara’s is officially the biggest selling album released so far this year and remains in the top five of the Official Albums Chart 20 weeks after release, whilst his current single ‘Shotgun’ became his first ever number 1 single in June.

Staying At Tamara’s is George’s second UK Number 1 album, hitting the summit in March. Staying At Tamara’s also features lead single ‘Paradise,’ which peaked at Number 2 in the UK singles chart and has now been certified Platinum, and ‘Hold My Girl’, ‘Pretty Shining People’, ‘Saviour,’ and ‘Don’t Matter Now’. The album is available in digital, CD, cassette and vinyl formats, and arrived nearly four years after the release of his multi-platinum and also-chart topping debut album Wanted On Voyage.

Tickets are on sale now.

George Ezra review, O2 Arena, London: A clean-cut show from the most optimistic man in pop

The all-welcoming showman radiates niceness as he goes into full crowd-pleaser mode.

LONDON, ENGLAND - MARCH 13: George Ezra performs on stage at The O2 Arena on March 13, 2023 in London, England. (Photo by Gus Stewart/Redferns)

“These are some of the funnest shows we’ve ever done,” smiles George Ezra . What else do you expect from the most optimistic man in pop? Since 2014, the Hertfordshire singer-songwriter has mastered his own brand of all-welcoming positive-pop that’s won fans of all ages. Radio staple megahits like “Budapest” and the Joe Wicks-assisted “Shotgun” were infectious songs of gap year travel, widened horizons, and living life to the fullest. In a modern age where pop can sometimes feel cynical and exploitative, here was charming young George to remind you this stuff was meant to be fun.

Last year’s third album Gold Rush Kid , the 28-year-old’s third consecutive chart-topper, added some gloomier concerns. Among Ezra’s usual happy fare, there were a handful more reflective songs of struggles with mental health and OCD, the strain of touring and imposter syndrome; in interviews, he suggested he nearly quit music altogether.

But there’s no sign of any of that tonight. Omitting any of Gold Rush Kid’s darker material, this is Ezra in full-on crowd-pleaser mode. Aware he has an audience ranging from grannies to young children – I’ve never been to a show with more pre-school aged kids in the crowd – he serves up a big-hearted, clean-cut pop show for all the family, full of bold primary colours and illustrated visuals.

George Ezra: 'It's hard for the human brain to understand death'

When the brass section of his backing adds calypso flavour to songs like “Blame it on Me” and “Green Green Grass”, the drawings of palm trees and exotic locations make you feel like you’re at a holiday resort. During an acoustic interlude, including a lovely take on the slowly incessant “Hold My Girl”, the sketched, twinkling night-time moon and stars recall the front page of a Lewis Carroll book. With Ezra, there’s something for everyone.

But then Ezra’s whole vibe – the friendly lad you met in halls at university who played in the hockey team – has proved as winnable as his songs. He just radiates niceness: with his slicked-back hair and denim jacket with Gold Rush Kid written on the back – think 50s rocker cast in an E4 drama – his face beams all night. When he addresses the crowd, which he does with utmost sincerity, he often does so with his arms outstretched, as if he’s trying to give the whole place a giant hug.

After 32 years, Take That still bring the house down

The music follows suit. There are few surprises, save a noisy take on “Did You Hear the Rain?”. Tracks like “Pretty Shining People” and “Cassy O’” are precision tooled for the hooks to sound huge and easy to sing along to, which they duly are. That isn’t to damn with faint praise: to produce songs so meticulously well-crafted that maintain an air of carefree bonhomie is no mean feat, even if over 90 minutes there are lulls that can veer into the wrong side of naff.

Yet he can’t go wrong with the big hitters. “Green Green Grass”, a song about death that looks forward to the knees-up at the wake, is undeniable dance-pop. The frenetic chorus of “Paradise” adds a flash of excitement that you didn’t realise was missing. This version of “Budapest” is fairly perfunctory but that barely seems to matter: it’s sung back at deafening volume. He ends the night with the bassy groove of summer-worshipping “Shotgun”, by which time everyone has a smile as wide as Ezra’s.

The number one album was released in March last year and went on to become the biggest selling record of 2018 and was nominated for Album of the Year at the BRIT Awards.

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

How does one account for the runaway success of the slew of slightly soulful, pleasant young men who have colonised the upper reaches of the charts in the wake of Ed Sheeran? Perhaps it’s that they offer a safe space: something that approximates rock (or R&B, or soul, or whatever old genre you care to name) but without any hint of danger, or unpredictability.

It seemed telling that George Ezra’s stage was set up like a living room — mock picture windows at the backdrop, floor lamps and pot plants scattered around the stage — because his music is cosy rather than confrontational. His are songs for whistling around the kitchen, for playing while you tidy up. The show even began with a mock clock radio going off and a breakfast show DJ announcing “the songs of a beautiful man”. But the effect of so much domesticity was that when he closed his eyes while singing — which he did often — it might have been because he was trying to remember whether he had placed his online delivery of groceries, rather than because he was transported by ecstasy.

There’s not necessarily anything wrong with music so disconnected from rock’n’roll’s original impulse — an arena tour with two nights at the O2 testifies to how thoroughly Ezra has been embraced by the British public: there were tiny kids here, and there were old people, and everyone in between. And he was very competent in his deracinated renderings of assorted genres: rockabilly (“Cassy O’”), ska (“Get Away”), blues rock (“Did You Hear the Rain?”). But for all his terrific voice, his is a very pastel kind of blues: he may be the only artist in history to have been sent off on a train trip around Europe by his label to get some things to sing about on his first album (the resultant “Budapest” was treated like the second coming of The Beatles by the crowd), and who followed that by popping off to Barcelona for a month to get ideas for its follow-up. He’s not so much The Gap Band as The Gap Year Band.

In fact, with his cheerily blokey aw-shucks manner, what he summons is the memory of another British entertainer who tamed a wild music and became a family favourite. It’s just possible that George Ezra is the new Tommy Steele .

“While I was on the walk, I started receiving mixes of the new songs I had been working on, so the journey was sound-tracked by the new album and each made the other more meaningful.

George Ezra at the O2 in London. 19 March 2019

George Ezra: Britain’s bard of blue-sky thinking

The O2, London His detractors call him cheesy, but behind Ezra’s clean-cut image there are suggestions of a deeper artist waiting to emerge

M ost musicians are nighthawks. Should you wish to see one of these shady characters live, a little section of the New Yorker magazine has some sound advice. “Musicians and nightclub proprietors lead complicated lives,” runs the disclaimer in its Night Life listings section: “It’s advisable to check in advance to confirm arrangements.”

Singer-songwriter George Ezra is not a disreputable nighthawk: he allies himself with the larks and the doves. On this first of his two nights in London, the screens either side of the stage flash up a digital clock reading 06:59. As it turns to 7:00, a recording of the Radio 1 Breakfast Show host – and fellow son of Hertfordshire – Greg James announces “the songs of a beautiful man”.

This is Ezra clocking on, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, reversing the usual circadian rhythm where the sun sets on the working day, ties are loosened, a glass of something is poured, and the cool liquid yin of night holds sway.

A professional ray of sunshine, Ezra brings the glare of the daytime into the notional cool of the night. The stage for this arena tour set may feature low-lit, fringed Victorian lamps, but the arena is saturated with pastel lights and a backdrop of big windows, with virtual sunlight streaming in occasionally. As his biggest hit , saved for the end of the night, puts it: “I’ll be riding shotgun/ Underneath the hot sun.”

Ezra’s is summer fare, often reading like travel-core for entitled gap-year youth, all “bikini bottoms and lager tops”: plenty of Apollo and not much Dionysus.

Leading a six-strong band through his two No 1 albums, Ezra operates at a level of wholesome uncool with which, to his credit, he seems perfectly well-adjusted. Chris Martin, the granddaddy of nice British guys in music, used to bristle when Coldplay were dismissed as namby-pamby rather than louche and arty. Ezra is able to wink at the haters. The video for his latest single, Pretty Shining People , finds his output being analysed by a record company staffed by children. A wall-chart graph maps “catchiness” against “edginess”. The dearth of the latter sets off a big red alarm. But the kids are persuaded – they drop their sneery pretensions and dance around.

Ezra’s two No 1s peddle levels of blue sky not heard since Katrina and the Waves’ Walking on Sunshine : also intentional. His stated purpose for Staying at Tamara’s , a comeback second album that has proved more popular than his first, 2014’s Wanted on Voyage, was to provide succour in an age of anxiety. “What a time to be alive if you’re prone to overthinking,” runs Pretty Shining People, before dissolving into a more banal chorus-conclusion “we’re all right together”. Ezra encourages the ostrich in all of us: “Don’t think about that stuff,” runs It Don’t Matter Now.

Provide succour it did, not least to the record company: if you’re not counting The Greatest Showman soundtrack (and we shouldn’t), Staying at Tamara’s was the biggest-selling album in Britain in 2018.

Straight white boys-next-door are doing exceptionally well at pop of late. You can’t help but notice the epidemic of singer-songwriters dominating British music, and the justified hand-wringing this has brought. Britain’s pop economy used to produce David Bowies and Kate Bushes and other such outre characters and sell them to vast numbers of people, runs the lament. You might blame our current bland singalong fare on a retrenchment in popular tastes that goes hand in hand with Brexit (in reality, it has always been with us), or – intriguingly – the ripple effect of the German pop market that sometimes leads ours, as my colleague Laura Snapes wrote last week . Either way, the numbers are very much in favour of unthreatening bards.

Tonight, the least threatening of them all just keeps turning up the UVA and UVB. A three-piece horn section bathes every song in even more vitamin D. Cavorting around, the brass add fanfares, a hint of ska or little frissons of South Africa (on Sugarcoat ) or New Orleans to an already ebullient set, managing not to overplay, contributing just the right amount of texture and heft, never quite becoming cheesy.

George Ezra Performs At The O2 ArenaLONDON, ENGLAND - MARCH 19:

Even in a field full of nice guys, Ezra radiates charm. One of the rarely mentioned upsides of his high levels of positivity is that, even on his more troubled or low-key songs, he never overemotes, screwing his face up the better to gurn his “soulfulness”. He is a genial host, if perhaps a little too schmaltzy and formal at times. In the runup to Budapest , the big hit off his first album, he overexplains the concept of Inter-Railing. When he relaxes, however, you see why he hosts a well-loved podcast .

Ezra confesses to buying a bottle of rum off a stranger in a park, the better to medicate himself through watching Eurovision in Sweden (that’s why he never made it to Budapest originally: he got too trollied). The crowd cheers. “Don’t clap that! You’re better than that! Think of the children,” he grins. He had, he said, never watched Eurovision before. It’s just one hint that Ezra might not be as thoroughly banal as his detractors might imagine.

The other is his voice. Ever since he first appeared on the radar in 2013 with Did You Hear the Rain , people have remarked upon the big, sorrowful voice marinated in bourbon emanating from the body of a jolly twentysomething from the home counties, a baritone redolent of a barrel-chested bluesman (Ezra has cited Lead Belly and Howlin’ Wolf as formative influences). He has been known to play Dylan covers with his dad and his friends.

It’s a bit of a cliche, talking about a voice you could listen to reading the phone book, but it’s Ezra’s resonant rumble that makes his music intriguing. When the jolly veneer slips a little, on Saviour , he can pull off a few minutes of atmospheric intensity that seem like the work of a completely different guy. Beyond the feelgood anthems, there might just be a more interesting artist, politely biding his time.

George Ezra review, O2 arena, London: ‘Prius of pop’ grins back at people who sneer at him

George Ezra ’s is a theatre of the ordinary. The first of his two sold-out O2 arena shows begins when a giant alarm clock flicks from 06:59 to 07:00, and Radio 1 presenter Greg James announces the start of the breakfast show. The set is designed like a living room: there are lampshades, a few modest house plants, a rug. There’s probably an unopened electricity bill milling around somewhere. At last month’s Brit Awards, where Ezra won Best Male Solo Artist, Jack Whitehall jokingly accused the 25-year-old of being the “Prius of pop”. Clearly, he has decided to lean into it.

Still, Ezra has always been more charming, his songs more compelling, than people like to admit. Absolutely incapable of cynicism, he makes balmy bops with Graceland riffs and cheeky asides; his number one single “Shotgun”, with which he ends the night, is so delightfully buoying that it manages to get away with the line: “Bikini bottoms, lager tops, I could get used to this.” And there is a quiet rumble of darkness behind his perky, sun-soaked music, too. On second song of the night “Get Away”, he sings of being “shut down by anxiety”, even as he’s bobbing along on the balls of his feet and beaming at the crowd as if we’re all in on a great joke together.

The best albums of 2019 (so far)

“Pretty Shining People” also has a deceptively gloomy edge to it. “What a terrible time to be alive if you’re prone to overthinking,” he opines in his booming baritone (that voice took people by surprise when Ezra first emerged in 2014, incongruous as it was with his cheeky, Milkybar Kid face). As he sings, his image is projected, bathed in red, on the large framed “windows” behind him – a stained glass Ezra.

A few other moments of drama come courtesy of three impressive brass players, who instigate a Mardi Gras-style breakdown on “Blame It on Me”. The rest of his songs, though, are left exactly as they are on record, so as not to interfere with the mass singalong.

  • The Cure have finished recording their first album in 10 years
  • Albums: The Brian Jonestown Massacre plus Karen O and Danger Mouse
  • The Cinematic Orchestra make a remarkable comeback on To Believe

Later, Ezra risks toppling his reputation as a Nice Young Man by admitting he bought a bottle of rum off a man in a park in Sweden, in order to get as drunk as possible watching Eurovision with three Swedish girls. He just about recovers: “Don’t cheer that! Think of the children.”

Ezra is a cogent, charismatic showman, who grins back at those who sneer at him. It is an endearing talent, but in an arena this size, he could do with trying something a little more ambitious.

Perhaps next time, he could even venture out of his living room.

George Ezra cancels London O2 show due to acute vertigo diagnosis

The singer-songwriter is currently on tour promoting his third studio album, Gold Rush Kid. He won the Brit Award for British Male Solo Artist in 2019.

George Ezra has cancelled a performance at London's O2 Arena on Tuesday after being diagnosed with acute vertigo.

A statement posted to the 29-year-old 's Twitter page read that he had been feeling "incredibly unwell" before seeking medical attention.

The singer-songwriter is best known for hits including Green Green Grass, Shotgun and Budapest.

The statement read: "He's been diagnosed by a doctor as having acute vertigo and as a result we sincerely regret to announce that tonight's show at the O2 in London will not be able to go ahead as planned."

Hi everyone, unfortunately George has started feeling incredibly unwell this afternoon. He’s been diagnosed by a doctor as having acute vertigo and as a result we sincerely regret to announce that tonight’s show at the O2 in London will not be able to go ahead as planned. — george E Z R A (@george_ezra) March 14, 2023

A vertigo attack can last anywhere from a few seconds to hours, according to the NHS.

It is a sensation that you, or the environment around you, is moving or spinning, and can cause a loss of balance, dizziness or sickness.

A follow-up statement shortly after said those with tickets for the cancelled show will remain valid as they look to reschedule the date.

George Ezra tour 2019: How to get tickets for his London O2 shows and which songs will he play?

george ezra tour o2

George Ezra will continue his astronomic rise when he embarks on a run of massive UK concerts this month.

The chart-storming singer-songwriter will be playing his first ever headline arena tour in March, taking in some of the country’s biggest venues along the way.

It comes after the success of his two best-selling albums, Wanted on Voyage and Staying at Tamara’s, which spawned a number of hit singles including Shotgun and Budapest.

Ezra will be playing two dates at the O2 as part of the tour. If you’re heading out to see him at either of those dates, this is everything you need to know.

When is George Ezra playing at the O2?

Ezra will play two dates at the Greenwich venue, on March 19 and 20.

What are the stage times?

Exact set times are yet to be revealed, although doors will open at 6.30pm. Usually, the main act takes to the stage at 9pm, with things wrapping up before 11pm.

Who is the support act?

Sigrid will play the opening slot for Ezra on both O2 dates, as well as for the rest of his UK tour in March. The Norwegian singer is one of pop’s rising stars, having been named as the winner of the BBC Sound of 2018 poll. Check out the songs Strangers, Don’t Kill My Vibe and her latest single, Sight of You, for an introduction to her music.

What songs will George Ezra play?

Ezra seems to have settled upon a winning formula when it comes to the setlist, playing a similar string of songs at each of his gigs over the last few months. If you don’t want to spoil the surprise, skip this section — if you want to get into the mood though, read on.

The setlists have been pretty evenly split between favourites from his first two albums, Wanted on Voyage and Staying at Tamara’s.

These are the songs Ezra is most likely to play:

  • Don’t Matter Now
  • Pretty Shining People
  • Listen to the Man
  • Did You Hear the Rain?
  • Hold My Girl
  • All My Love
  • Blame It on Me

Are there tickets still available?

Standing tickets have all been snapped up for both dates, but there are still some seats left. Check out the O2’s official ticketing partner, AXS , to buy them before it’s too late.

How to get there

The best way to get to the O2 is on the Tube. North Greenwich on the Jubilee line is the designated station, just a couple of minutes’ walk from the area. It’s well marshalled on big event days, meaning you should be able to get into and away from the gig with little problem.

There are also a number of buses — 108, 129, 132, 161, 188, 422, 472 and 486 — which all stop at North Greenwich station.
