Door County Trolley has been a staple in Door County since May of 2000. To learn about how this tour company began we must start with AJ Frank. AJ was a home care nurse for 12 years in Milwaukee. In 1999 he went on vacation to Savannah, Georgia with his wife and newborn son. They took a tour and he thought to himself, “I can do this!” Upon returning to their home in Cedarburg, AJ and his wife Cheryl sold their house, quit their jobs, and moved their family to Door County. He bought his first trolley and started Door County Trolley.

At Door County Trolley we believe in providing our guests with the best possible experience. Had a wonderful time with our friends on the tour! Enjoyed all of our visits to the wineries, distillery and cheese shop. A highlight of the tour was definitely the sleigh ride. Enjoyed our lunch at the beautiful English Inn. Our tour guide Henk was just a delight, with wonderful stories about the history of Door County and lots of greats spots to visit. Would highly recommend this tour to anyone!

My friends and I celebrated my birthday by doing a wine, spirits and beer trolley tour. Our Trolley tour guide John, made us laugh and kept us entertained all day long. We drank, we laughed, and we got home safe! Thanks to the Door County Trolley company for making this trip a memorable one! Can’t wait to go back on another tour!

I give this activity a 10 out of 10! Absolutely amazing with a great guide, beautiful scenery, and fantastic music. The entire trolley was interactive and you were able to quickly make friends with others out for a good time. Our guide definitely made a difference in keeping everyone pumped and did an amazing job of keeping us all engaged. I will be back for another tour and couldn't be happier to have used this service for our first girl's weekend!

We did this tour with a group of ten and had reserved online (highly recommended for a group). We did the murder and mayhem tour and it was fun and informative. The driver was engaging and he obviously knew a lot about the area, he had very good recommendations for places to eat or visit for the weekend. It a great way to see the area without having to battle the traffic.

Wow! What a fun night on the Ghost tour of Door County! Our trolley driver and tour guide, Ed, was such a spectacular storyteller and historian! I totally recommend this tour. Whenever I return to Door County, I’ll book the Murder and Mayhem tour because Ed guides that tour as well! Thanks so much Door county trolley!

Loved the scenic tour. Tour guide Boyd was very friendly, funny and informative. I’ve been to Door County many times. This tour filled in the blanks of places up there that I’ve wondered about. I would love to come back & do some of the other tours available. I would highly recommend this tour.

Door County Ghost Trolley Tours - Must see !!

We went on the Door County Ghost Trolley Tour this weekend and LOVED it. Our driver Ross was great! We heard many stories, went into the Noble House and even have pictures that we believe have figures/ghosts in them. We went to a lighthouse and also to a cemetery in the state park where some of people in the stories were buried. This is a MUST see! I ain't friend of no ghost ! Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah

This was a 2-hour trip via trolley around Fish Creek. Very personable driver/tour guide. The trip stopped at some sites around Fish Creek that were said to be haunted, and we learned some stories of people who fell upon misfortune (loss of lives). I guess I was entertained overall, but I guess I would have hoped to see something spooky-haha! We toured a "known" haunted house, we stopped in front of 3 or 4 other houses that had "ghost stories" associated with them (sitting out front the house, sitting in the trolley, while the story is being told), stopped at the water front to learn of a ship's ill fate (Fish Creek townspeople), went to a cemetary where some of these folks were buried, and did stop at a lighthouse to learn about another "ghost" there. I think the tour could have been better if we were allowed to explore the light house (inside-we all just stood outside at night) or for example, the light house had visitors who wrote entries in the visitor's log describing "odd" events that occured. To see some of those original entries (somehow, even photo copied or on display IN the light house maybe??, or the tour guide had some to show??) would have made it more "convincing". That said, it was nice to be chauffered around town, learn of some of the town's predecessors, had a great tour guide/driver, and wonderful "ghost music" to set the mood during the trolley ride. It's OK for kids, but it may not keep them entertained for long enough...I'd suggest maybe 8 and older (I took my 5 year old-she liked the music on the trolley, but didn't like the stories, got bored, etc).

We just returned from the trolley tour of the Lighthouses in Door County. You could take this tour in the early part of your trip to DC and find out what the "must see" sights you want to plan for the rest of your trip! Our driver was John, he was funny, friendly, and full of great information about the area. Lunch at Gordon's Lodge was included in the price and was great! Very recommended way to spend a few hours learning about the area and seeing the lighthouses!

Great way to see highlights of Door County! We booked the Wine/Brewery/Distillery and lunch tour on our first day and it was phenomenal. Nice funny tour guide, timely departure, well planned stops and nice guests that joined us on this tour. I highly recommend this company!

We went on the Ghost Tour with Ed and had such a great time! We were running a little late getting there as our reservations said to check in about 30 minutes prior to the tour starting. We were able to call and were told that as long as we got there before the tour starting time, we would be fine. We just made it! The ghost stories were a little spooky, but Ed also made the tour funny and lightened the mood with his personality! It was a fun way to learn about the area that was a little different than the wineries or the cute shops. We made several stops along the tour and at about four of them we actually got out of the trolley and did a little exploring, including the Noble house and a cemetery. While we didn't encounter any ghosts, we would still highly encourage this to anyone interested!

There are eleven light houses in Door County, WS which were needed because of the treacherous waters during the late 1880's when shipping resources from the area was important to the economy. Now many of those light houses are private and not accessible to the public. During our Lighthouse trolley ride we saw four and were able to enter two. Several lighthouses have not been renovated either. What I found interesting is how low they are not like the tall lighthouses I'm used to. The history was interesting and seeing the inside where families of like 9 lived, was unbelievable! We had a nice boxed lunch withBoar's Head lunch meat with our tour. Our driver/guide John, a local, had SO many stories; quite a character! I thought I was on a driving comedy show

Door Co. Trolley is a definite must when visiting! We did the scenic tour and our tour guide John was so knowledgeable and entertaining. He is a lifetime local to the Door County area so we appreciated all the "insider knowledge" that was shared and local recommendations. Tickets are affordable and well worth it for the 1.5 hour tour. For anyone thinking about doing this for groups/bachelorette's- we saw at least 6+ bachelorette parties boarding a trolley with cocktails in hand so I'm sure they had an amazing time! The winery/cocktail trolley is on our list for our next visit. :)

Love the trolly. Always have a great time, and the drivers are the best. we have gone three t8mes and can't wait for the next.

This was a decent tour, provides history of the area and takes you around the local spots. Tour guide was friendly and provided good restaurant suggestions. You can order alcoholic beverages, buy local cheese and beef snacks, and shop their gift shop. I think the tour can be shorter for a lesser value.

Went on the door county trolly for the ghost tour. It was great to learn about the history of door county. Our tour guide did an amazing job with the music, dressing up, and taking us to 3 different stops. My favorite was noble house and learning all about the family, their history, and haunting stories of faces being in the windows. Lastly We decided to purchase the ghost cups as a cute souvenir and had the cherry lime wine slushes to bring along the tour. I'm not a slushy person and prefer bitter cocktails or wine but these were delicious. We would 10/10 recommend and we are planning on doing another tour next time.

I went on a tour with a bachelorette group and we all had a lot of fun! We went to a winery, distillery, and a brewery. And then after they take you to get lunch. We went to a pizza and pasta place (good thinking to get people carb loads). Overall, all the places were good. The brewery was everyone's least favorite and we wished we would have been able to go to another winery instead (being in wine country you shouldn't just go to one winery on the tour). The food was very good at the restaurant and they gave us all cheesecake for dessert as well. The vibe was pretty good on the trolley through out the day. Some of the people get pretty wild, and our bachelorette group was surprisingly the least rowdy group! The tour guide was also decent and seemed to want everyone to have a great time. I would recommend this in a group setting, but not if it is just a couple people in your group.

7 Scary-Fun Door County Haunted Attractions

Published October 4, 2023 Last updated October 4, 2023

Fall has arrived, and Halloween is right around the corner! In addition to gorgeous autumn colors, harvest foods and decor, beautifully carved jack-o'-lanterns, kids in adorable costumes, and eating way, way too much candy, October means it's time to seek out some thrills, chills and outright frights to get yourself into Halloween mode.

Whether you're an aspiring ghost hunter or someone who appreciates a good ghost story, these bone-chilling locations and spooky trolly rides are frightfully fun ways to spend Halloween in Door County.

Alexander Noble House

From unidentifiable sounds and strange faces in mirrors to apparitions and even ghostly figures appearing in photographs, there's no shortage of scares at the  Noble House , one of Fish Creek's oldest residences.

An eerie man stands on the porch of the old, haunted Noble House.

The local blacksmith and postmaster Alexander Noble built the house for his children in 1875 after two consecutive tragedies struck. First was the death of his wife and family matriarch, Emily, and second was a house fire that destroyed their first home.

From the moment they entered the new home, the family experienced strange happenings and unexplained phenomena that visitors still report today—including those mysterious sounds, disappearing faces, frightening apparitions, mysterious lights and orbs, children's cries and an eerie "mist" that forms at the site of the house fire and sometimes takes on the vague form of a woman. Many locals suspect Emily haunts the property in search of her beloved children.

Haunted Tales from Door County's Historic Pub

The Shipwrecked Brew Pub boasts a storied past as rich as its craft beers. Initially constructed in the 1800s, this brewery and taproom has been known for its paranormal activity for years, a reputation that didn't wane even after the building was ravaged by fire in 2017 and rebuilt in 2018.

ghost tour trolley door county

Rumors suggest it's home to multiple spirits, perhaps the restless souls of rugged loggers and laborers from the 1800s or gangsters like the infamous Al Capone, who sought refuge here to evade the law. Legends whisper of IRS agents who mysteriously disappeared after visiting Capone at the pub, leaving behind  faceless, nameless spirits who might have passed through the doors and never departed.

Employees and patrons have reported eerie occurrences within these aged walls. Unexplained mists, doors rattling, and walls quivering have sent shivers down spines. The uncanny includes small but inexplicable events, like finding pennies standing upright in peculiar locations.

One particular tale that lingers involves the ghost of Jason, believed to be Al Capone's illegitimate son, who met a tragic end in the attic of the building. There's even a curious account of a police call about a child on the roof, only for responders to find nothing.

Wisconsin's Oldest and Most Haunted Pottawatomie Lighthouse

Nestled on Rock Island, just off the northern tip of Door County, is the state's oldest lighthouse — the Pottawatomie Lighthouse . Erected in 1836, when Wisconsin had yet to achieve statehood, it was initially watched over by David Corbin, who rests in eternal slumber on the island.

ghost tour trolley door county

Today, the lighthouse has been painstakingly restored as a live-in museum, offering visitors a glimpse into what life was like in 1910. Dedicated guides inhabit the lighthouse each summer, conducting daily tours for curious souls who dare to visit.

Yet, there's more to this historic site than meets the eye. Reports of strange occurrences abound, with visitors noting eerie noises, doors opening and closing of their own accord, and unexplainable "thumping" sounds that seem to emanate from thin air. Some believe these phenomena are the handiwork of David Corbin's lingering spirit, occasionally making his presence known as he roams the second floor.

The Sherwood Point Lighthouse Haunting

Perched on a cliff's edge south of Sturgeon Bay , Sherwood Point Lighthouse has stood as a guardian since its construction in October 1883. This lighthouse overlooks a treacherous area known for shipwrecks. Keeper Henry Stanley's niece, Minnie Hesh, visited him and eventually married William Cochems, who became lighthouse keeper in 1889. They raised their family here until Minnie suddenly died in 1928.

Sherwood Point Lighthouse

After William's retirement in 1933, the lighthouse became a retreat for Coast Guard members, but Minnie's spirit seemed to remain. Visitors reported mysterious footsteps on the stairs, voices within the building, the clinking of teacups and glassware, dishes being washed, beds being neatly made and apparitions on the staircase. Minnie's presence, while eerie, is friendly, and her laughter echoes through the building. The Coast Guard eventually invited the Northern Alliance of Paranormal Investigators to explore the haunted lighthouse. Despite their best efforts, equipment malfunctions hindered their research.

While the Sherwood Point Lighthouse is not open to the public, you could have a chance to see it on a guided tour during the Door County Lighthouse Festival . This twice-a-year event offers access to 11 lighthouses not typically open to the public.

The Haunted Chambers Island Lighthouse

Located on the remote Chambers Island in Door County, the Chambers Island Lighthouse has a rich history, once housing brave keepers and their families who served as beacons to protect the rugged coastline. The first to take up the post in 1868 was Lews Willaims, his wife and their 11 children.

Chambers Island Lighthouse

As time passed, the lighthouse fell into disrepair, and in 1976, Joel Blahnik, a Coast Guard boat captain, and his wife and son moved in to take care of the structure. On their first night, Joel heard strange footsteps and a door closed even though they were alone on the island. Visitors reported eerie feelings and encounters with an unearthly presence, too. Tools began mysteriously disappearing and reappearing in unlikely places, leading Blahnik to believe the ghost was the original keeper, Lewis Williams. A group of nuns visiting in 1987 broke the haunting through prayer. The next time you visit Chambers Island Lighthouse, you might wonder if the spirit of Light Keeper Williams has returned. You'll need an appointment to enter this lighthouse.

Shipwrecks & Death’s Door

Door County shipwrecks are a well-known attraction for snorkelers, divers, and kayakers, but the often-tragic history and stories behind the wrecks are often overlooked.

A diver explores a shipwreck deep under the surface of Lake Michigan.

While a kayak tour of shipwrecks or a trip to a museum may not leave you with that wild just-saw-a-ghost feeling, these are great places to start to understand some of the region’s darker history.

You can learn more about these tragic wrecks and the stories—and souls—behind them at the Door County Maritime Museum’s locations in Sturgeon Bay or Gills Rock.

Haunted Trolley Tours

For a spine-tingling adventure, jump aboard a Door County Trolley , offering two spooky tours: Ghost Tour of Door County and the Haunted Pub Crawl.

Door County Trolley Ghost Tour

On the " Trolley of the Doomed" ghost tour , you'll hear tales of ghostly sunken ships, haunted lighthouses and mysterious happenings on the darker side of this spirited peninsula. For more intoxicating tales, join the haunted pub crawl and visit three of Door County's haunted pubs and taverns. Both are so popular that advance purchase tickets are recommended before tickets sell out.

Door County has so much haunted activity; a book and a movie were made. You can read " Haunted Door County ," filled with ghostly history, or watch " Ghosts of Door County " to follow five paranormal investigators as they dig deep into the peninsula's haunted past.

As you can see, history and mystery intertwine in Door County, and even the most picturesque locales seem to harbor secrets and spirits. As you ponder a world beyond the realm of the living, start planning to experience some of the otherworldly in Door County.

Door County Trolley Announces New Ghost Tours

By Door County Pulse , Peninsula Pulse – June 12th, 2009

ghost tour trolley door county

Door County Trolley has created two new tours full of things that go bump in the night. In addition to the Northern Door ghost tour, the Haunted Olde Sturgeon Bay and Haunted Trolley Pub Crawl will visit unusual, intriguing and sometimes notorious haunts throughout the city.

“Sturgeon Bay has more than its share of ghost stories,” says AJ Frank, owner of Door County Trolley. “They are more recent and are tales of notorious crimes; often murder, which is very unusual in such a small town.” The haunts include two lighthouses, a cemetery, the waterfront, and stops at four haunted houses.

The Haunted Trolley Pub Crawl features visits to four of the Peninsula’s spirited taverns and pubs.

The Haunted Olde Sturgeon Bay tour is offered at 7 pm on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday through August 28. Beginning September 4, tours are at 6 pm on Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. All tours depart from Stone Harbor Resort.

The Haunted Trolley Pub Crawl will begin July 10, and continue through October on selected Friday evenings. Tours will depart at 7:30 pm from the Carrington Pub & Grill at Landmark Resort.

In addition to the Ghost Tours, Door County Trolley offers a variety of themed-tours throughout the year. Including Scenic Narrated Tours, Lighthouse Tours, and Premier Wine Tours. All Trolleys are heated and protected from inclement weather.

For specific tour information, reservations, pick-up and drop-off arrangements call Door County Trolley at 920.868.1100 or visit http://www.doorcountytrolley.com .

Take a ghost tour by trolley in Door County this Halloween season

Trolley of the Doomed tour guide shares a haunted tale from Wisconsin's Door County peninsula.

It's the Halloween season and there are tons of activities to enjoy around the state. Door County is an ideal place to visit this time of year, not only because of the beautiful fall foliage but for the wide range of Halloween activities they've got there.

If you're up for a bit of a scare and a good history lesson, then look no further than the Trolley of the Doomed . It's a ghost tour offered by Door County Trolley Inc. The tour takes guests to 10 different sites on the peninsula including a lighthouse, a sunken ship, a graveyard and what the owner of Door County Trolley calls, "a real haunted house."

Trolley of the Doomed tour guide shares a haunted tale in one of Door County's graveyards.

"It's a wonderful tour that takes you to 10 stories and we tell you those stories and these are not made-up. Nobody's jumping out with chainsaws, these are real stories told right where they occurred," AJ Frank, the owner of Door County Trolley explains.

Frank says he has guests that report strange occurrences or unexplained images in photographs several times a week. He says although the tours can be scary, they are family-friendly and kids five and older are welcome on the tours.

Door County Trolley also offers a Haunted Pub Crawl . That one and the ghost tour only run during the Halloween season but all year-round they also offer a Murder and Mayhem Tour .

"They're very intricate murders. Murders you would never think that would be in a sleepy little county like Door County. We tell you who did it, why they did it, what happened there after. [If you like] any kind of murder mysteries or anything like that, as far as TV shows, you're going to love the Murder and Mayhem Tour," Frank says.

They also offer a variety of other tours year-round including a family ride, a narrated scenic tour and of course, wine tours.

There's more Halloween activities where that came from. Anne Sayers, the Tourism Secretary for Travel Wisconsin recommends the Red Barn Haunted Corn Maze .

"It's full of surprises so prepare yourself for 1/2 mile of fear as you navigate the maze with only a black light. And you'll board a haunted hay ride to and from the maze. And that's, of course, if you make it through the maze," Sayers says.

Red Barn Corn Maze

Sayers also recommends a stop at the Wood Orchard Market to pick up a fall treat or drink.

"Browse the shelves of locally produced goods from cherry flavored everything, horseradish sauce, honey mustard and so much more. The Wood Orchard Market also sells apple varieties that are hard to find elsewhere," Sayers says.

For a spirit Sayers says the One Barrel Brewing tap room is a good stop for seasonal craft brews. They even have a beer that pays tribute to one of the stops on the trolley ghost tour!

For food, Sayers recommends Mezzanine where you can dine for breakfast, lunch or dinner on their rooftop patio or keep cozy inside where Sayers say you can, " try Wisconsin favorites with a Door County twist, such as the house breaded cheese curds that are served with — this sounds so good — lavender, cherry chutney or you can go with pan fried whitefish bought locally from the Baileys Harbor Fish Company ."

For hikers or bikers looking to fuel up she also suggests grabbing a sandwich or soup from MacReady Artisan Bread Company .

"They prepare hearty sandwiches, high quality ingredients and of course, it's Door County, so you're going to find bread made with locally grown tart cherries and dried cranberries," Sayers explains.

Door County offers a wide variety of lodging and it can be difficult to narrow down the right place to stay. Sayers says the newly modernized cottages at Alpine Resort offer privacy and modern comfort with a lakeside view. Or for a family friendly option, the Newport Resort , which is centrally located in Egg Harbor.

Frank says no matter how you spend your time in Door County, a fall visit is a must-do.

"For me, it is about the people that visit in October. Yes, we have all the color and the beauty and the chill in the air, but really when people come to Door County, they come with the expectation to have fun and relaxation and you see it on their faces and very few places do you find that. But especially in autumn, it's a time when people would come up to visit are just in the best mood and it's great," Frank remarks.

The perfect way to get a feel for Door County is to take one of the “Old Time” Door County Trolley Tours. It’s an ideal starting point for your adventures on the peninsula.

Door County trolley

Door County Trolley Tours currently has 16 trolley tours, but if you can’t decide which one to take, begin with the 90-minute Narrated Scenic Tour .

The scenery is magnificent! Not only does it take you to cliffside vistas overlooking the islands, but you’ll also learn legends and lore, a little history, and discover some of the best places to wine and dine in the county.

Peninsula State Park

We spent a good portion of the tour in Peninsula State Park (Wisconsin’s most popular state park). One of the reasons for its popularity is the Sunset Bike Path, a 9.6-mile crushed limestone trail running through the boreal forest, cedar wetlands, and meadows out to the beach.

Our guide told us that the winding roads through Peninsula State Park were designed to encourage visitors to meander and take their time.

There are also miles of hiking and biking trails, snowshoe trails, cross-country ski trails, and rugged off-road mountain bike trails. In the winter, the upper roads are closed to cars but open to snowmobiles.

We hopped off our trolley at Sven’s Bluff Overlook (one of the most photographed spots in Door County).

The sweeping view of Green Bay and its coastline is magnificent.

Sven's overlook

Our trolley tour also took us past the 65-foot Eagle Tower. Visitors may climb the stairs to the top or take the 800-foot ramp to the observation deck.

The view is scrumptious from up there. (This may be something you want to come back and explore later.)

More Fun Facts About Door County

  • The Niagara Escarpment is a massive limestone cliff ridge running from New York State (its name comes from the cliffs of Niagara Falls) through Ontario, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Illinois. It’s the very foundation of Door County.
  • Fish Creek was the first big tourist destination in Door County, and early visitors arrived by steamboat.
  • When National Geographic published a photograph with a feature entitled “Wisconsin’s Door Peninsula, A Kingdom So Delicious” in 1969, Door County exploded into a wildly popular USA travel destination.
  • Door County has 11 lighthouses , four of which can be toured.
  • Legend has it that Door County’s name comes from the narrow and treacherous strait between the northern tip of the peninsula and Washington Island. The unpredictable waves and currents and underwater rocks caused many a shipwreck and death over the years. As a result, the passage was dubbed Porte Des Morts (Death’s Door, in English), and the name, though shortened to just ‘Door,’ stuck.
  • Summer theater is alive and well in Door County, with two outdoor theaters showing live performances all season long.
  • Typically the second or third week of October is the prime leaf-peeping season, and in Door County, the vibrant colors last longer—up to two weeks.

Our trolley ride took us through several charming villages, and our guide shared lots of fun facts and history about each one, as well as recommendations on where to eat.

We learned about seafood boils, supper clubs, farm markets, and more. Here’s a tip for whitefish fans: At the Post Office restaurant, they’ll ask you if you want your fish de-boned!

At the end of the tour, he mentioned the many other Door County Trolley Tours available: food and drink-themed, ghosts, true crime (the six most gruesome murders in the county), a lighthouse tour, holiday-themed, and a shortened family ride for those with young children.
