No amenities have been announced yet, but the company said the ship will feature “innovative Disney experiences along with the dazzling entertainment, world-class dining and legendary guest service that set Disney Cruise Line apart.” The ship, which will be based outside of the US, will also be one of the first fueled by low-emission green ethanol.

The finished boat will have room for 6,000 passengers and around 2,300 crew members. That would make it smaller than its sister was expected to be— Global Dream II was supposed to have room for 9,000 passengers—but the 208,000-gross-ton boat will still be the world’s seventh largest and the largest in Disney’s fleet. The conglomerate did not reveal how much it paid for the Global Dream , other than to say it was secured at a “favorable price.”

“Our cruise ships give us the unique opportunity to bring Disney magic to fans no matter where they are, and the addition of this ship will make a Disney Cruise Line vacation accessible to more families than ever before,” Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products, said in a statement.

Disney Cruise Line Announces Purchase of Partially Completed Global Dream Cruise Ship – Expected to Set Sail in 2025 Deployed Outside of the United States

Today, Disney announced the acquisition of a partially completed ship that will bring the magic of a Disney Cruise Line vacation to new global destinations. Disney will work with the esteemed Meyer Werft shipbuilding company to complete the cruise ship previously known as the Global Dream in Wismar, Germany. The ship will be renamed with certain features reimagined under the world-renowned expertise of Walt Disney Imagineers and is expected to set sail in 2025.

DCL Early Concept Art Genting Dream Takeover

“Our cruise ships give us the unique opportunity to bring Disney magic to fans no matter where they are, and the addition of this ship will make a Disney Cruise Line vacation accessible to more families than ever before,” said Josh D’Amaro, chairman, Disney Parks, Experiences and Products.

The acquired Global Dream project will help Disney Cruise Line’s fleet to grow to 8 cruise ships and will not impact the 7th Triton Class cruise ship scheduled for after the launch of the Disney Treasure schedule for a 2024 launch.

The new ship, to be based outside the United States, will feature innovative Disney experiences along with the dazzling entertainment, world-class dining and legendary guest service that set Disney Cruise Line apart. The exterior will be adorned in the iconic, Mickey Mouse-inspired colors of the fleet, complete with signature red funnels.

The 208,000-gross-ton ship is expected to be among the first in the cruise industry to be fueled by green methanol, one of the lowest emission fuels available. Disney Cruise Line expects the passenger capacity to be approximately 6,000 with around 2,300 crew members.

MV Werften Global Class

Construction will be completed at the former MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany, under the management of Meyer Werft, the Papenburg-based company that built the Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish. The ship’s previous owner filed for bankruptcy before completing the vessel, enabling Disney Cruise Line to secure it at a favorable price and within the capital expenditure guidance The Walt Disney Company provided on its recent earnings call. The project also secures employment for hundreds of former MV Werften employees and will provide opportunities for numerous maritime industry suppliers in the region.

When the construction halted at MV Weften at the beginning of 2022, the 208,000 GT Global Dream was three quarters complete. The cruise ship, which measures 342 meters (1,122 feet) in length, beam of 46.4m (152ft 3in), with a 9.5m (31ft 2 in) draft. Originally, the ship was designed to carry 9000 passengers.

The Global Dream was originally ordered on March 3, 2016, with the keel laid on September 11, 2018

More details about the maiden voyage, itineraries and onboard experiences will be announced at a later date.

I hope they have a designer who has sailed on a ship before design this one as opposed to the Wish…….

' src=

I couldn’t agree more. Wish was a huge disappointment for us. Terrible layout, ridiculously small pools, awkward arrangement of stations in Marceline Market, rock hard sofas in the staterooms…definitely a “one and done” for us.

' src=

200% agreed! Once was enough for me!

' src=

Will this be ship #8 or are they going to cancel the third Triton class ship?

' src=

Will help the fleet expand to 8 ships.

Should have read it slower, I see this will be #8. Based outside the US makes me think they will finally break into the Asian cruise market.

' src=

That’s where this ship was supposed to be based anyway. Makes sense.

' src=

That is a monster of a ship that might eat up DCL in the end. Way too big to offer a premium product

' src=

I really hope they create some kind of subsidiary for this and don’t make this 6 funneled monster and instead make it closer to its original design under a different company centered around the Asian market.

' src=

NO! I was really hoping this was just a rumor. I think this is a (literally) HUGE mistake. How can they put the quality of theming we’re used to on a ship this massive? I have zero interest in this. I would prefer they build more ships the size of the Wonder and Magic. I LOVE those ships. I’m guessing it will cruise out of Asia – they can keep it!

I would also love to see a new build closer to the size of the Magic-class.

' src=

@ Heather and Scott, I agree 100%

' src=

i’m willing to bet they got a “GREAT” deal on this hull since it’s been sitting around with nowhere to go. Maybe saving a few bucks on construction will allow for lower sailing rates… and I realize how stupid that sounds as I type it. LOL!

' src=

Off to Asia (China?) and will cater for that market. Casino taking a good portion of the space.

Casino is being removed, according to the news article released in Germany.

' src=

Where will it’s itinerary’s be

' src=

Too big for my tastes!

' src=

The interesting thing to me is that Disney is going to have a single ship in their fleet that isn’t like the others and that they didn’t get to spec out. With the target sailing market also being separate from the rest of DCL, this acquisition will result in what I expect to be a very different experience from the rest of DCL. (And the opportunity for a sibling ship is lost since the Global’s sister ship wasn’t as far along and is already nearly fully scrapped out.)

' src=

I’m betting they will keep it in the Asis market as it makes sense of the ship as it was designed for that area and market. I’m betting $1.00 to a dozen donuts it will stay over in Asia and wouldn’t come to the US waters for a while. Good move Disney buying a cruise ship on the clearance rack.

Disney Cruise Line Finalizes Purchase of Mega-Ship, the Global Dream

  • by John Frost
  • November 16, 2022 December 14, 2022

global dream cruise ship capacity

Update : According to news outlet capital.de, Disney Cruise Lines paid roughly $42 million for the Global Dream mega cruise ship. That’s a massive discount of 97% below what the ship was originally projected to cost.

The ship is only 75% complete though, Disney is projected to spend more than $900 million finishing the ship. Captain Mickey and team will have to add in DCL’s famous level of detail and rework some of the top-deck features that weren’t targeting Disney’s typical audience of passengers.

Disney is also expected to convert some of the staterooms into other spaces as the announced guest capacity for the ship was 6,000 but the Global Dream was originally planned to host 9,000 guests.

What sort of features would you like to see on the Global Dream when it sails again, with a new name, in 2025?

Original story below

In order to expand the Disney Cruise Line vacation experience to new international locations, Disney has been negotiating to acquire a mega cruise ship that was only about 75% complete when the original company went bankrupt. The cruise ship then known as the Global Dream will be finished in Wismar, Germany, by Disney and the prestigious Meyer Werft shipbuilding business.

As the company that was building the ship went into insolvency, Disney was able to get a good deal from the creditors. So even with the cost of expected upgrades and new finishes, it will be a quick and affordable way to bring the Disney fleet to 6 ships.

Disney is working with Meyer Werft to complete the construction at that MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany. Meyer Werft is the Papenburg-based company that built the Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish and is scheduled to build two sister ships to the Disney Wish.

The ship will be given a new name and have some of its features redesigned by the world-famous Walt Disney Imagineers. As you can see in the concept art above, the exterior will be adorned in the iconic, Mickey Mouse-inspired colors of the fleet, complete with signature red funnels.

Some of the original concept art for the Global Dream reveal that the top deck was originally planned to be very much like an amusement park at sea, which would be a big departure from the Disney Cruise Line experience, so we expect a lot of changes to happen there.

global dream cruise ship capacity

Plus Disney Cruise Lines are known for their interior theming and attention to detail when it comes to the guest experience from the cabin and its furnishings to things like carpeting and those character based touches.

Disney Cruise Line expects the passenger capacity to be approximately 6,000 with around 2,300 crew members. The Disney Dream, Fantasy, and Wish currently hold around 4,000 passengers. At a huge 208,000 gross tonnage that would make this ship the 7th largest cruise ship world-wide if it were sailing today.

The new ship, which Disney plans to base outside of the United States, will be updated to include Disney quality experiences along with the usual dazzling entertainment, world-class dining and legendary guest service that guests expect from Disney Cruise Line.

The ship was originally intended for the waters of China and The Walt Disney Company has expressed interest in finding a home port for one of its ships closer to its patrons in nations like Japan and China. So that would be our guess as to a final destination.

The ship will be among the first in the cruise industry to be fueled by green methanol, one of the lowest emission fuels available. While it’s not emission free, perhaps Disney will buy carbon offsets to make it a net-zero carbon ship. That would be great for the battle against climate change.

Disney has said the new ship is scheduled to set sail in 2025.

Set to be the world's biggest cruise ship, the 'Global Dream' is now seeking a buyer

The vessel, which sits unfinished in a german shipyard, reportedly cost $1.8bn to build.

A number of potential buyers are lining up for Genting Hong Kong’s Global Dream — the unfinished mega-liner set to be the world’s biggest cruise ship by capacity — and a deal needs to be signed by summer when the company’s closed German shipbuilder will run out of cash, said the liquidator overseeing the sale.

Still, the ship will not be sold in a rush despite it sitting unfinished in a German shipyard that has filed for insolvency, according to Christoph Morgen, the German court-appointed provisional insolvency administrator for MV Werften, the shipbuilding unit owned by Genting.

The vessel’s sale, which began with three potential buyers, has now attracted a “significant number” of interested parties, including investors who are keen on it as part of a larger purchase that includes operator Dream Cruises, Mr Morgen told Bloomberg News.

“We will have a speedy process, but there is no need for a fire sale,” Mr Morgen said from Berlin. “Our target is to get the highest price.”

The Global Dream reportedly cost $1.8 billion to build and lenders had financed about €1.4bn ($1.6bn) for the ship’s construction.

Mr Morgen declined to give a price for how much it will cost to complete the ship but said he wants interested buyers to bid for the whole value of the completed vessel and not simply “completion costs plus a little on top".

The cruise ship is currently under construction. AP

Because Global Dream is so heavily financed — credit was provided by a consortium of more than a dozen lenders and four guarantee providers — a sale will not make much difference to Genting Hong Kong.

MV Werften’s provisional insolvency in early January was a critical turning point for the company, which became the world’s biggest cruise operator to seek court assistance to protect its assets during the Covid-19 pandemic when it filed a wind-up petition days later.

Genting reported a record loss of $1.7bn in May as the pandemic ravaged the cruise ship industry.

Mr Morgen said his priorities include finding buyers for the shipyards under MV Werften and the Global Dream vessel.

He is optimistic a deal will be struck before or by summer, when the shipyard in Wismar, Germany that is building the mega Global Dream runs out of money. Once that happens, it will be harder for the shipyard to return to normal operations, he said.

The 342-metre liner, about as long as a football field and designed to carry 9,500 passengers, was heralded as ushering in a new era of mega ships that could tap Asia’s growing cruising market.

Although some potential buyers are interested in only purchasing the Global Dream to add to their fleet, others are keen on a Genting package that gives them access to the Asian market, said Mr Morgen.

Most of the interested parties are cruise ship companies or operators backed by private equity, he said. Some serious investors have already signed non-disclosure agreements to engage in talks.

“There are potential buyers looking at an entry package to enter the Asian cruise ship market by buying Dream cruises as a business plus vessels currently operated by Dream cruises, plus Global One and potentially Global Two,” said Mr Morgen, referring to the mega ships by their original generic names.

Billionaire Lim Kok Thay, Genting Hong Kong’s recently resigned chairman and chief executive, expressed early interest in purchasing the ship, said Mr Morgen.

The sale is not contingent on the buyer completing the ship’s construction at the Wismar shipyard where it now sits, he said.

A shipbuilder waits in front of the stern of the Global Dream. AP

The ship was about 72 per cent finished when the German government and Genting could not agree in December on plans to finance $620 million to help complete it and keep the shipyard in business, according to a letter Mr Kok Thay wrote to creditors in January.

Genting had a written plan by mid-2021 to wind up MV Werften and place it in a “solvent liquidation”, said Mr Morgen.

The fully financed plan detailed how MV Werften would pay all its creditors in the liquidation process, and the plan had been analysed by an independent auditor. It was decided that Global Dream would be the last vessel built by the shipbuilder and the company had stopped taking in any new customers, Mr Morgen said.

Although there was still some hope that alternative scenarios could be developed in order to continue operations, there was “no permanent continuation of the MV Werften business”, in the plan, Mr Morgen said.

“MV Werften planned to finish construction of the vessel, repay all debt, repay the state and have some equity value left,” said Morgen.

German Economy Minister Robert Habeck said his government did everything in its power to save MV Werften.

Mr Habeck said on Monday that the government would be willing to subsidise the final construction of the Global Dream with a “new reliable investor”.

If a buyer for the Global Dream contributes 10 per cent of construction costs, there is a “real chance” to secure the construction financing from the existing construction financing lender and convince the state to guarantee it, said Mr Morgen.

Global Dream II’s sister ship Global Dream at MV Werften’s Wismar shipyard in January

Unfinished and unwanted 9,000-passenger cruise ship to be scrapped

Lower hull of Global Dream II to be disposed of after shipbuilder filed for bankruptcy

What was meant to be one of the world’s largest cruise ships is being prepared for its maiden voyage – to a scrapyard.

Global Dream II , which was designed to hold more than 9,000 passengers, had almost been completed at a shipyard on Germany’s Baltic coast. However, the shipbuilder MV Werften filed for bankruptcy in January 2022 and the administrators cannot find a buyer for Global Dream II.

The German cruise industry magazine An Bord reported that the lower hull of the liner is to be disposed for scrap price.

The administrator Christoph Morgen reportedly told a press conference on Friday that the ship needed to be moved out of MV Werften’s Wismar shipyard by the end of the year because the yard had been sold to Thyssenkrupp’s naval unit, which plans to build military vessels there.

Demand for cruise ships has collapsed since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.

Global Dream II and its sister ship Global Dream – which is not being scrapped for now – would have been the world’s largest cruise ships by passenger capacity when complete.

At 208,000 tons they would have been jointly the sixth largest cruise ships by size, just behind Royal Caribbean’s five Oasis-class ships.

Disney to complete and transform former Global Dream

facebook

The ship will be among the first cruise ships to be powered by green methanol

The giant cruise ship left partially completed in the wake of the collapse of Genting Hong Kong has been acquired by Disney Cruise Line. The ship, formerly known as Global Dream, will be completed at the MV Werften shipyard in Wismar, Germany, under the management of Meyer Werft, the Papenburg-based company that built the Disney Dream , Disney Fantasy and Disney Wish .

Disney Cruise Line says the ship will be based outside of the United States and that it expects the passenger capacity to be approximately 6,000 with around 2,300 crewmembers.

While exterior changes will see the ship carry the iconic, Mickey Mouse-inspired colors of the fleet, complete with signature red funnels, less visible changes will see the 208,000-gross-ton ship become among the first in the cruise industry to be fueled by green methanol.

Meyer Group has set up a new operation, Meyer Wismar, to handle the project.

“When Disney approached us to jointly complete the ship, we saw great opportunities,” ” says Thomas Weigend, managing director of Meyer Werft and Meyer Wismar. Meyer stands for innovation, so we are especially happy to deliver a ship that will be among the first in the industry to be powered by methanol. That will require an elaborated transformation of the ship’s engines, additional tanks and many more measures that will make the ship one of the most future-proof. The ship can cruise climate neutral as soon as green methanol is available. In addition, the waste management onboard will be updated according to the newest technology available.”

Disney says “the ship’s previous owner filed for bankruptcy before completing the vessel, enabling Disney Cruise Line to secure it at a favorable price.”

ANOTHER SUCCESS FOR CHRISTOPH MORGEN

The acquisition marks another success for the insolvency administrator of the MV Werften Group, Dr Christoph Morgen, a partner in law-firm Brinkmann & Partner

Insolvency administrator goes to work at Genting’s German shipyards

“Today is a very good day for the shipbuilders in the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and for the maritime supply industry in Northern Germany,” said Dr. Morgen. “Several hundred current and previous employees of MV Werften, colleagues from Meyer Group and numerous suppliers will complete the impressive shipbuilding project in Wismar over the next two years so that it can set sail for Disney Cruise Line as a sustainable family cruise vessel in the future. As part of the design changes, the buyer is placing a special emphasis on sustainability and will therefore, for example, convert the ship to an environmentally-friendly methanol propulsion system. I am very pleased about this contract as it confirms the excellent work that has been done so far by the MV Werften staff. At the same time, it underlines the significance in shipbuilding and the exceptional know-how Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania as a region owns.”

The task now, says Brinkmann & Partner, is to prepare for the restart of work at the Wismar shipyard. According to current plans, Meyer Werft will contribute its extensive expertise in the construction of complex and innovative cruise vessels. It will lead the work to be carried out and completed by previous and current MV Werften employees as well as colleagues from Meyer Group on the ship in Wismar. The vessel’s construction period is estimated to be approximately two years.

Dr Morgen will actively support the project at the Wismar shipyard by leasing the yard to Meyer Group. In addition, the approximately 100 MV Werften colleagues still employed during the insolvency will contribute to the vessel’s completion, while Maritime Engineering GmbH, a company founded during the insolvency and now with a staff of 100, is also providing services for the project.

How long will the transformation take? Disney Cruise Line expects the ship to sail in 2025.

The Taipan was sold to OM Ships, a German religious organization, in May 2022 . The new owners plan to transform the 1989-built vessel into a missionary ship and floating bookshop.

The world’s largest-capacity cruise ship - GHK's Global Dream - is unfinished and up for sale

CruiseMapper logo

The sale of GHK-Genting Hong Kong's unfinished liner MS Global Dream lured plenty of potential buyers, including the billionaire Lim Kook Thay (Genting Group's Chairman and Board Executive).

GHK, the bankrupt parent company that shuttered Crystal Cruises  after  two vessels (Serenity and Symphony) were seized for unpaid fuel bills , is now looking to sell what is being billed as the world’s largest cruise ship  by  passenger capacity .

Global Dream, which is still unfinished in a German shipyard, is expected to become a 9500-passenger cruise liner when she is finished.

Due to the bankruptcy, the GHK's shipbuilding subsidiary MV Werften was placed into insolvency by a German court. It's been assigned to an administrator, Christoph Morgen, who is responsible for selling Global Dream.

According to Morgen, there was a “significant number” of companies looking to buy not only Global Dream but some who would like to buy GHK's subsidiary Dream Cruises , too.

Global Dream reportedly cost ~USD 2 billion but is said to need a half-billion to be completed.

Dr. Morgen has not confirmed the price tag for the ship's sale, but revealed he was looking for "completion costs plus a little on top".

Interested parties and serious investors have been visiting the shipyard with delegations and requesting details about the vessel.

According to Morgen, Mr. Lim was among those who had expressed early interest in the sale and believed he was looking to buy the cruise ship cheaply and take the build elsewhere. The billionaire resigned as Genting's chairman & CEO days after the company went into insolvency.

The current world's largest cruise ship - RCI-Royal Caribbean ’s  Wonder of the Seas - debuted on March 11, 2022.
