How do you start making a travel Reel for Instagram?

Malhotra begins with a clear-cut plan when making a Reel. “When crafting a compelling travel Reel, there are five key principles to bear in mind,” he says. “Prioritize high-quality footage and unique perspectives. Weave a narrative: Keep it personal and authentic. Emotions over beauty: Capture the essence of the locale. Audio is king: Choose complementary soundtracks. And lastly, timing matters: Share high-resolution content within the optimal timeframe.”

Savi and Vid stress that the video needs to be representative of the experience you are having or want viewers to have: “Be it a place you’re traveling to or somewhere you’re dining ! It needs to be impactful. If you can capture the audience within the first half, then that’s a sure-shot winner. Trending music is a no-brainer.”

For D’sa, it needs to feel authentic and real. “I have to keep it authentic, else it's not me,” she says. “Going viral should never be the reason to make a Reel. When you are truly enjoying yourself in a video, it shows. And that joy is infectious. Even though the quality of the video is of utmost importance, having fun and looking beyond trends is the key.”

Revati and Charles suggest being clear on what you are trying to communicate. “Some useful information ? A beautiful view? It’s then easier to make decisions while shooting, rather than ending up with a lot of footage that you don’t really like or can use.” They also recommend being the face of your Reel. “Don’t be afraid or shy to get in front of the camera! And talk. People love listening to people and seeing their faces to be able to put a face to the voice.”

What equipment do you use to make a travel Reel?

“When it comes to crafting cinematic Reels, my go-to gear includes the iPhone 14 Pro,” says Malhotra. However, he also relies on a versatile array of equipment to elevate his content. “I use the Sony Alpha ZV-E1 for vlogs, accompanied by a selection of lenses tailored to specific needs. The DJI Mavic 3 takes care of breathtaking aerial shots, while the DJI Avata provides wide-angle drone shots. In addition, my trusty GoPro HERO 12 swoops in to capture all the action.”

D’sa says, “95% of my Reels are shot on camera. But an iPhone camera is good enough to start.” While Savi and Vid use a full-frame camera, their phones, and a tripod to make their Reels with a multi-camera setup. Joshi also uses his iPhone camera to film most videos.

For Revati and Charles, it depends on the situation at hand. “Our trusted Sony a7R III camera is for when we need stellar footage." An iPhone camera works for easy shots; a Hollyland Lark Wireless Microphone for clear voice-overs, and to talk over distances.

Malhotra says, “If you're embarking on your journey as a travel Reel creator on Instagram, you'll be pleased to know that an iPhone is your all-in-one solution. In fact, it's the only equipment I believe you truly need.” Revati and Charles add, “The best camera is the one you already have and know how to use ! It’s simple, shoots some great footage and doesn’t have a steep learning curve. There are people who’ve shot such fabulous films with just their phones!”

Savi and Vid suggest you add a portable ring light to your kit to make closeup shots look instantly better.

Which apps or software do you use to edit videos?

“To fine-tune my masterpieces, I turn to a variety of editing tools. On my laptop, I rely on Final Cut Pro for comprehensive edits. When on the move, VN Video Editor is my choice for mobile editing, and I also harness the native Instagram Reels tab for those final touches,” says Malhotra.

Joshi also suggests the VN Video Editor app for edits on the go: “For those just starting out, simplicity is the key to success. You can accomplish most of your edits using the Instagram app itself. Remember, consistency is the linchpin of growth. Begin there, and venture into more advanced editing techniques as you go.”

For Savi and Vid, Adobe Premiere Pro takes the cake. “I enjoy playing around with fonts, grading, and colors. There are countless phone-friendly apps like InShot and Filmm that are great for beginners or for established creators to edit on the go.” D’sa uses Premiere Pro on her laptop too, but she prefers InShot for on-phone editing. “Though it might sound time-consuming, I would always recommend learning desktop-based software before one on a phone. That truly makes learning the process on the phone quicker. I personally started with Adobe Premiere on my laptop, but there is DaVinci Resolve , which is arguably the best and has a free version too.”

Revati and Charles use a MacBook Pro to edit. “It helps to have an SSD drive and a large-capacity Drobo to archive can save and access all the footage for later use. Of course, sometimes it’s as simple as shooting with your phone and editing on it, either with templates or with editing apps like VLLO . The edit must roughly be in your head before you shoot. Our 35-odd years of collective experience in shooting commercial films have etched that in our minds. Take people through a journey or discovery. Every piece of content is a story, even just info-dispensing ones! As a process, do a rough lineup, without worrying about the exact points you want to cut. If it makes sense, then begin cutting precisely. Walk away from it for a bit, and you will often return with great ideas. If you have a voice-over, having that in place with your rough cut will tell you whether you need fewer or more words. The superimposed text should be limited to just the few things you want to emphasize.”

What’s the key to a catchy caption on Instagram?

“Try to be unique with your words, and don’t be afraid to make it emotional. That’s when you will be able to create an interesting caption that connects with your audience,” says D’sa. While Joshi says, “Treat each reel differently. Ideally, keep it short, but in some cases, you might need to add more information in the description that wasn't in the reel, or cue to a bigger story.”

Savi and Vid aren’t afraid to keep their captions bulky: “We’ve always been storytellers, so we love writing long and meaningful captions. I would say one should go with their instinct while penning captions. If you enjoy short and impactful captions, go the one-line route! But if words give you joy or you have valuable information to share, write a lengthy descriptive one.”

“Don’t forget to provide any context or background info that you couldn’t add in the reel,” say Revati and Charles. “Ask a question—it’s great to get more engagement and comments. Write in your own voice, and make sure you don’t use phrases that you’d never utter. Use hashtags and keywords for added discoverability, and put relevant information in (cost, location, timings, etc). Lastly, since it’s happened to us, please don’t copy someone else’s caption!”

Malhotra adds, “Crafting an engaging caption is an art in itself. Here's the secret: Keep it concise and relatable. Always remember, that your caption serves as the second point of engagement. This means that if someone enjoys what they see in your reel, they'll be inclined to delve deeper into your caption. So, make your caption an extension of the story your video tells.”

What shouldn't you do when making travel videos?

“Make sure your content isn’t being uploaded in low-resolution. Remember that timing is everything. Don't post when your potential audience is catching the z's and try avoiding non-trending audios,” says Malhotra.

Savi and Vid suggest that you do not “overdo the filters and colors, as overly processed reels tend not to do well. Avoid too much text [on the video itself]. It gets tough to read and people love watching and listening more than reading. And don’t just copy trends mindlessly. If it’s you, then go for it.”

Joshi says, “Copying someone else’s style might work for a while, but you need to develop your own aesthetic. We personally feel there are no strict no's, except reels promoting irresponsible behavior that can cause societal harm, such as littering in public places, ignoring driving rules to film sensational content, or reinforcing sexist stereotypes,” say Savi and Vid.

Revati and Charles add, “Just post. Don’t wait to gold-plate it. The more you do it, the better you’ll get. Don’t worry so much about what people are going to think or how you look. You’re forgotten at the start of the next reel!”

15 Instagram Reels Caption Ideas For Travel Videos

Your perfectly planned vacation outfits are coming to life at your destination, and you’re getting fire footage that you can’t wait to share with your followers — only, caption got your tongue. The combination of jet-lag and margarita brain is making it very hard for you to come up with something witty or meaningful to say about your travels, which is really holding up your posting game. Instagram Reels is a great landing place for travel footage , because it’s more permanent than Stories, but won’t clog up your main grid. If you’re feeling particularly sentimental about your trip and want to save and share as much of it as possible, creating a scrapbook via 60-second Reels will give you something pretty special to look back at. The best Instagram Reels captions for travel will complement your sun-dappled # vacationgrams and leave your followers intrigued to keep watching.

If you have the time and mental clarity to opt for a lengthy, personal caption, detailing special moments or realizations you’ve had on your trip, power to you. But if your video speaks for itself and doesn’t need much context — save maybe a location pin or hashtag — you can get away with a generalized caption that lets people know what when they click play they’re going to get a taste of your trip . Here are some captions that will help your vacation stand out on Instagram Reels.

1. Greetings from...

If your video footage is basically a postcard, insert your location into this simple caption for a straightforward approach.

2. An upgraded view

When you’re sharing a particularly epic view — a summit at sunrise, a candy-colored beach sunset, a fairytale garden scene — this caption is perfectly understated, and yet suspenseful.

3. Roll the tapes

Finally edited together all of the best shots from your big trip? Your followers have been waiting for that vacation content, give them what they want!

4. Out of Office

If you’ve escaped corporate life for a bit and found yourself in some whimsical treehouse or beach hut, this caption will serve as a cheeky contrast from your typical florescent-lit content.

5. Sea you soon

View on Instagram

A little beach pun never hurt anyone.

6. Vacation mode: Activated

Once you get to your destination, unpack and slip on a robe or fill up the hotel tub with too many bubbles, you’re officially on vacation time.

7. On the road again

When you’re road tripping, this caption lets people know what you’re doing, without giving away too much — they’ll have to click play to learn more.

8. Eating my way through...

Insert your destination into the caption to share drool-worthy footage of a table with too many plates, or a montage of your favorite vacation meals.

9. Drinking my way through...

Did you just so happen to capture enough cheersing to create a montage? Insert the name of your destination into the title to show your followers what boozing in this destination looks like.

10. Catch flights, not feelings

Vacationing your way through a break up? This independent caption says a lot, without saying too much.

11. I want to live in this moment forever

That one travel video that you can’t stop rewatching because it makes you so happy deserves a caption this sappy.

12. Cabin life

For footage of actual cabin life, or very fancy life, if you’re partial to wit.

13. POV: You booked that flight.

A fast-paced clip montage of your trip’s highlights will inspire your friends and followers to do as the caption says.

14. Chasing sunsets

Did you just get back from your trip and realize that 90% of your videos are sunsets? No problem, lean into the theme.

The Gen Z word for “memories” is somehow a less cheesy option for a collection of highlights from your trip with no specific theme or order.

Are you planning a fishing trip, but not sure what rod and reel to take with you? Perhaps you want to find a lightweight, collapsible fishing rod to throw in your backpack for your next hike. Or maybe a high-quality, telescopic rod seems like a better fit.

The good news is, there is a great option just waiting for you!

The following is my guide to finding the best travel fishing rods. I include what to look for in the best road and reel, and include my top picks!

We use affiliate links and may receive a small commission on purchases. Thank you for your support.

What to Look for in a Travel Fishing Rod and Reel

The Best Travel Fishing Rod and Reel

No matter your skill level, from novice to advanced, you might wonder what to look for in a travel reel and rod. Especially if you have ever only used traditional fishing before.

No matter what, there are a few considerations to think about before purchasing so that you can find the best option for you and your needs.

Construction and Materials

In addition to finding the highest quality rod made from advanced materials, you want one that also offers excellent performance and high strength.

If you purchase a good quality rod, then you can expect it to have two important qualities: durability and sensitivity.

First, a durable rod will last you for years and many trips to come. It also will not break when it comes into contact with a strong fish.

Second, a sensitive rod easily alerts you when a fish is nibbling at the end of your line.

A travel rod is typically shorter and breaks down into several pieces. Many come as a two-piece rod, and some break down into as many as four pieces. Another option is a telescopic fishing pole, that folds into itself. And others are just very lightweight.

Most travel rods run about six to eight feet in length, fully assembled.

You'll want to choose your rod based on:

  • the types of lures you like to use
  • how long you need to cast
  • the types of fish you are catching
  • freshwater fishing vs saltwater fishing

Are you trout fishing or bass fishing? Fishing on a lake or the ocean? There's a rod for that. As for me, I'm Hooked on Kayak Fishing.

The term rod action refers to the spot on the blank where the rod flexes. A rod with a fast action bends towards the top of the blank. That means you will have increased sensitivity, but less flexibility. They work better with smaller fish because you can feel their nibbles.

Rods with a slow action bends at the bottom of the blank. You'll get the opposite with this rod action- high flexibility but low sensitivity. These work well for larger fish since they produce stronger nibbles.

If you plan to fish in ponds, lakes, or rivers for small bass, trout, or the like, then a fast action rod is better. If you will do offshore or surf fishing, then you want to look at medium or slow-action rods.

Combo vs. No-Combo

A combo fishing pole sometimes called a fishing combo or reel combo means that the rod and reel come together as one unit.

Generally speaking, you can usually get a higher quality rod and reel if you purchase them separately. However, sometimes you do not have a choice, and there are some good options out there if you do get a combo.

Consider Your Preferred Lures

The Best Travel Fishing Rod and Reel

The final thing to consider is the types of lures you want to use. If you use smaller lures like jigs or one made from soft plastics, then choose a six to a seven-foot ultralight spinning rod. It will provide you with the sensitivity you'll need.

If you prefer using deep crankbaits, you need at least a medium power rod. That means you want to look for a seven-foot medium-action casting rod. Opt for one with a slower gear ratio, such as 5:1.

Reels has received a lot of attention and enthusiasm from the social media community despite its recent debut. Furthermore, reels have a higher chance of reaching a wider audience than posts and stories, which is why travel bloggers should use reels.

Your account will reach more feeds and recommendations with relevant hashtags and quality videos.

For a reel to feature in the trend top list, there are some editing skills and Instagram reel tips every travel blogger should know. Here are some of 7 ways to edit the perfect travel-based reels:

good travel reel

1. A Picturesque Time-Lapse Video

There is something ethereal about the time-lapse video. Maybe it's because it captures the ephemeral moments of life so eloquently and poetically.

And that's precisely why you should capture a time-lapse video.

Usually, most phones have unique settings for time-lapse videos, but if yours aren't simple, use any video editing app. Now shoot the video like you usually do and increase its speed to 5x or 6x while editing.

Then, to complement the clip, play some tranquil and relaxing music.

Tip: When shooting video for time-lapse recordings, we recommend using a tripod rather than your hands to avoid a jittery, unpleasant interruption in the middle.

2. Nostalgic Photo Dump Reels

Reels need not always necessarily have to be a video or collection of videos, and they could also be a collection of pictures. Gather your favorite trip snaps and arrange them in a friendly manner, or better yet, let them be a jumble.

Using your video editor, import the photos you've picked and give each one a specific time, no more than 0.5x. After you've set the time, add some music, and your nostalgic photo dump reel is ready to go viral.

Tip: You can also add effects to the pictures to edit how they appear on the video.

3. Slow-Motion Video to Capture Fleeting Moments

There is no better way to display a beautiful landscape than slow-motion videos.

Usually, you will not need a third-party application since most cameras and smartphones already come with the slow-motion option.

Set the slow-motion feature and move the gadget to capture the moment, or you can simply capture the still moment with clouds passing by the scenery.

With tranquil music for the background, you now have masterpiece reels showing up on every feed.

Tip: For slow-motion videos, it is better to rely on tripods for the movement, as even the slightest jitter will ruin the vibe.

4. Panning Video Reels

This is probably the simplest reels trick that will not require special editing tricks.

All you will have to do is move your mobile camera from across the scenery, not too slow and not too fast, at a gentle, moderate speed. The key is to make sure the length of the video is not too long.

Tip: Depending on the vibe of the location, pair the suitable audio and add some text and the location of the place.

5. Transition Videos for the Excitement

Transition videos are quite popular nowadays. A series of events artistically blended and expressed in a 60 seconds short video captivates people's attention. Transition videos may take some effort, but it's all worth it in the end. You can either bring your transition videos or get help from someone else.

From the beginning of the trip to the destination, shoot quick shots of every part of your traveling. Combine the video later.

Shoot from multiple angles, present diverse views, go macro, capture movies in portrait mode, wide-angle, etc.

Combine these clips with a current peppy song to create a professional travel reel!

Tip: When adding special effects for each and every video, make sure not to exaggerate the effects and keep it simple.

7. Make Informative Video Reels

Different countries and cities have their own set of rules. Not everyone is aware of these rules, so you can help them by sharing the rules with videos taken from the city.

Viewers generally find instructive films to be quite informative, so your reel has a reasonable possibility of reaching a larger audience and garnering more Instagram likes and views. You can also take a look at the services provided by Megafamous for more likes and views on your posts and reels.

Combine all of the videos and use a photo editing application to overlay text over them. You may modify the look of your Instagram videos by importing your own typefaces.

Tip: Along with adding text to your video, add the specific rules and other essential information in the captions.

good travel reel

7. Share Your Food Experience

What a good vacation without good food? Right? Then why not use reels to share your culinary adventures?

Take videos of the restaurant or cafe where you are going to eat, and then take close-up shots of the waiter bringing the meal you ordered and the meal in the finest quality.

Since it's a travel video, share the traditional dishes of the city or country.

Make sure to note the dish's name as well as the restaurant. You can also include a brief review of the cuisine in the captions to ensure that your viewers take your advice seriously and save the video.

Tip: If it's spicy food, add dynamic music. Suppose it's a sweet dessert; add a melodious or a classical piece as the reel audio.

Reel in the Views: 5 Tips For Creating Engaging Instagram Travel Reels

Updated January 25, 2024

Most likely you’ve done some experimenting with Instagram Reels, and maybe even integrated them as a regular part of your Instagram strategy.

But have you noticed lately that your Instagram Reels get less views and engagement than they did a few months ago?

While I never recommend using social media as a main way to build your business for this very reason, social media can be a valuable way to grow your email list and provide social proof for your business.

That means having a robust social media presence is definitely worthwhile.

So, while posting an Instagram Reel or two isn't the surefire way to grow your audience that it used to be, there are still ways to create engaging content to attract more people to your travel accounts.

And you don't need to be a film director to make a splash with your video content. It's all about capturing the essence of travel – the sights, the sounds, the vibes – in a way that's authentic, engaging, and yes, a little bit fun.

So, whether you're a seasoned travel reels creator or just dipping your toes into the world of travel marketing, get ready to 'reel' in your audience with the right combination of creativity, inspiration, and strategy.

Tip 1: Craft a narrative with visual storytelling

When it comes to creating travel reels for your Instagram account, think of yourself as a storyteller.

The key? Crafting a narrative that transports your followers from their couches straight to the heart of your destination.

Keep in mind that not every reel or social media post needs to tell a story. A picture, after all, is worth a thousand words, and a great travel video can be worth a thousand pictures. Mix it up a bit by using both single-shot reels and combining multiple short video clips into a single reel.

Start with a Bang:  Every great story has a captivating beginning. Kick off your travel reel with something that grabs attention – a breathtaking view, a lively local festival, or maybe a tantalizing local dish.

This is your hook, your “hero shot”, the “wow” moment that makes viewers want to keep watching.

The Heart of the Story:  The middle of your reel is where the magic happens. This is where you unfold the story of your destination. Show clips of bustling markets, the serene sunsets, the laughter of locals, or the clink of coffee cups at a quaint café.

It's not just about showing places; it's about sharing experiences. Let your followers really feel the vibe of the place.

End with a Memory:  As all good things must come to an end, so should your travel reel. Conclude with something memorable – it could be serene landscapes, a peaceful night view, or even a teaser of what's to come next.

Leave your followers with a lingering sense of wonder, an invitation to explore more, both in their imaginations and, hopefully, in reality too.

Remember, reels can be short stories – and every frame counts. Your goal is to create a narrative that not only showcases a destination's beauty but also tells a story that resonates with your audience.

Tip 2: Use eye-catching visuals

High-quality visuals in travel reels are like the secret sauce that can turn a good story into an unforgettable one.

It's not just about finding pretty places. It's about capturing them in a way that feels authentic and mesmerizing.

Quality Over Quantity:  First things first, focus on clarity and quality. A shaky, blurred video of the Eiffel Tower at sunset? A big no-no.

Invest in a good stabilizer or tripod for your phone or camera. Clear, stable footage is more than just pleasing to the eye; it's a nod to your professionalism.

Find Your Angle:  Sometimes it's all about perspective. That hidden alley adorned with street art, the local market bustling with life, the silhouette of a city skyline at dusk – these are the scenes that tell a story.

Experiment with different angles and viewpoints to give your audience a fresh take on familiar sights.

Lighting is Everything:  Good lighting can be the difference between a mediocre shot and a masterpiece. The golden hour – just after sunrise or before sunset – is your friend. It's nature's filter, casting a warm, soft light that can make any scene look magical.

Authenticity is Key:  Yes, we all love those postcard-perfect shots, but realness resonates. Include the unexpected – the hustle and bustle, the quiet moments, the laughter and chatter. Show the destination as it is, in all its glory and imperfection.

Edit with a Light Touch:  When it comes to editing video, less is often more. Enhance your visuals with a video editor to bring out their best, but avoid overdoing it. Let the natural beauty of your scenes shine through.

Keep transitions simple and functional unless you're going for a full, epic cinematic approach.

The goal is to create a visual journey so compelling that your viewers can almost feel the breeze on their faces or smell the street food.

Tip 3: Embrace local flavors and showcase unique experiences

When it comes to travel reels, it’s all about capturing the essence of a place – its culture, people, and unique experiences.

This is where your reel transforms from a visual journey to an immersive cultural experience that highlights a travel destination.

Highlight local culture:  Let your reel showcase the vibrant tapestry of local culture. From traditional dances on cobblestone streets to artisans crafting wares using age-old techniques, these moments capture the authentic travel experience your audience craves.

Embrace authentic sounds:  Music is the universal language, and every destination has its own melody. Incorporate a trending song or audio clip into your reel that sets the mood and transports viewers straight into the heart of the destination. Make sure the audio you select complements the visuals instead of competing with them.

Cicchetti in Venice, Italy. The small sandwiches are stacked in a case, ready for purchase.

Food is a feast for the eyes:  Food is more than sustenance; it's a cultural journey. Showcase the local cuisine in all its glory – from steaming street food to exquisite local delicacies. Let viewers almost taste the flavors through their screens. Remember, food is not just about eating; it's about the experience, the preparation, the joy of sharing.

Capture customs and traditions:  Every place has its unique customs and traditions. Share these special moments – be it a local festival, a traditional holiday, or a daily ritual. These experiences offer a genuine glimpse into the local way of life and add depth to your reel.

Engage with locals:  Interaction with locals can add an authentic voice to your reel. A smile, a greeting, a shared moment – these are the encounters that bring warmth and authenticity to your travel reel.

Tip 4: Engage and connect by inviting interaction

Creating a great travel reel isn’t just about showcasing stunning destinations; it's about creating a two-way street of interaction with your audience.

Ask a question:  Questions are the simplest yet most effective way to spark engagement. At the end of your reel or in the caption, include a question related to your content. "Have you ever visited this beach?" or "What's your favorite local dish?"

It doesn’t work every time, but questions can spark comments, interaction, and ultimately get your travel reel seen by more people.

Include a call to action:  A call to action (CTA) is your cue to the audience to take the next step. It can be as simple as "Follow us for more adventures" or "Tag a friend who would love this."

If a reel goes along with a blog post on your website, use a CTA to drive people to your travel blog.

Thing of CTAs on your Instagram posts as a gentle nudge to get viewers to engage more deeply with your content.

Cross-post in your Instagram Story:  Don't let your content live in isolation. Cross-post between Reels and Stories to maximize reach and interaction.

Use Instagram Stories to highlight a reel. You can also create a poll or quiz that complements your reel. It's not just fun and interactive, it's an excellent way to understand your audience's preferences and tailor your content accordingly.

Respond, relate, repeat:  Engagement is a two-way street. When your audience takes the time to comment, make sure to respond. This helps build a community around your content and makes your audience feel heard and valued.

Also make sure you spend time searching for and engaging with other people’s content as well. It's important to give as much (or more) than you'd like to receive, and the Instagram algorithm seems to lean heavily toward rewarding accounts that spend a lot of time engaging with others.

By actively inviting interaction and engaging with your audience, you're not just creating content, you're fostering a community. This approach both extends the reach of your travel reels and builds a loyal audience that is more likely to engage with and share new posts.

Tip 5: Build a consistent Instagram Reels strategy

In the ever-evolving world of Instagram, one rule remains unchanged: consistency is vital. Consistent posting keeps your audience engaged, which means the Instagram algorithm is more likely to show them your new content.

Here are a few ways to help maintain a consistent posting schedule.

Set a realistic schedule:  Start by setting a posting schedule that is realistic and manageable. Whether it's twice a week or every other day, choose a frequency that works for you and your content creation process.

Consistency doesn't mean posting every day; it means posting regularly.

Plan ahead:  The key to consistency is planning. Use a content calendar to map out your reels in advance. This helps in maintaining a steady stream of content and avoids last-minute scrambles.

Consider seasonal themes, upcoming holidays, or local events that align with your travel niche.

Batch create:  Embrace the art of batch creation. Dedicate time to shoot or edit multiple reels. This approach not only saves time but also ensures you have a stash of content ready to go, keeping your posting schedule on track.

Quality over quantity:  While consistency is crucial, never compromise on quality for the sake of quantity. It's better to post less frequently with high-quality content than to post mediocre content just to stick to a schedule.

Monitor and adapt:  Keep an eye on your engagement metrics. What time of day does your audience engage the most? Which reels are getting more traction?

Use these insights to fine-tune your posting schedule and content strategy.

Stay flexible:  While consistency is important, so is flexibility. Be ready to adapt your strategy to new trends, feedback from your audience, or changes in the Instagram algorithm.

Building a consistent reel strategy is not just about keeping up with a schedule. It's about creating a rhythm that resonates with your audience. By staying consistent, you not only maintain visibility but also establish your brand as a reliable source of captivating travel content.

The bottom line: Your Instagram travel reels

As you create your travel reels, experiment with different styles and techniques, and discover what makes your content uniquely you.

Play around with different ideas, and see what resonates with your audience and feels true to your travel brand. Remember, it's about telling your story, your way, and watching as it unfolds into something truly beautiful.

The world is waiting to see your stories unfold.

Best Travel Fishing Rods for 2024

good travel reel

Choosing a travel rod for anglers who like to pack light and carry a fishing rod in their luggage on every where they travel requires a little planning and view of the options and fish you think you might encounter on your travels. We reviewed a wide gamut of rods and came up with a lot of options to consider as well as some great recommendations for which fishing rods we would suggest for a lot of different types of fishing and travel.

Things like size of the rod when disassembled, number of pieces, rod case, roll or bag, type of rod, how you will transport it, whether a telescoping rod makes sense and more need to be considered before choosing the best travel rod for your fishing plans.

Travel rods can come from 2 pieces up to 5 pieces not to mention the telescoping travel rod options out there. You might want to fit the rod in a suitcase, if so more pieces will break down into a smaller foot print. Or you might carry it with you which might give you more options for rods. You might want a hard case to protect the rod if you’re worried about TSA or some other party damaging your rods in transit. Or a rod wrap may suffice if it’s tucked inside of another hard case suitcase.

Know Your Travel Rods

Then there are the types of rod to consider including spinning travel rods, casting travel rods, telescoping travel rods as well as travel fly rods or specialty rods like travel swimbait rods or travel trout or panfish rods. Or any combination of the aforementioned.

If you plan to fish with light lures and light line, then a spinning travel rod might be the best option. If you plan to look for big bluegills or crappies specifically on your travels, then a long telescoping rod might make more sense or a small spinning rod like a trout rod might give you a lot of options for trout and panfish.

If you’re going for larger quarry, you will want a beefier rod that has a reel that can hold heavier line. Usually a baitcasting travel rod makes sense for bass, or big fish like walleye, pike, musky, stripers, etc.

Specialty rods like travel swimbait rods or extra long jigging rods might be just the ticket for probing unknown waters for specific types of fishing like jigging brush for crappie or casting oversized swimbaits for trophy bass and stripers.

Of course if you’re in to fly fishing, then a travel fly rod is hard to beat. There are some super high end and middle of the road options that are great rods that make a 9-foot fly rod fit into an over night travel bag with the travel fly rod option.

CONSIDER TELESCOPING RODS FOR TRAVEL

For some, a telescoping rod is an easy spur of the moment travel rod option to probe some nearby waters to see if they have fish available. I have buddies that keep telescoping rods in their trucks at all times and will break it out on their travels or while taking a lunch or after work on a work trip. It’s a quick and simple option.

Most of time telescoping rods are a bit lower quality. Or at least that was the case back when the only option was a low end push button spin cast combo for small panfish. There are, however, some newer options bringing this back as a real viable option for bass and panfish.

A Travel Combo Might Make More Sense

You can buy travel rods that are a rod and reel combo. This is often the case with telescoping options. But there are some better quality options in the multi-piece travel rods with a decent spinning reel. Most of the time. I want the best rod I can get and a good reel in my bag so I’m not fighting my equipment in the limited amount of time I get to fish on my travels. Especially those spur-of-the-moment unplanned fishing trips while traveling.

But when you get to a location and wished you had a rod and reel, a decent priced telescoping rod/reel combo can get you in the fish on an unexpected hot spot quickly and easily.

You Need a Travel Rod Case, Bag or Roll

Anymore your travel rod is going to come in a hard case, a roll or a bag. Regardless you need to take care to protect the pieces of the rod or the rod while it is compartmentalized so it’s not damaged in your travels.

A hard case might be a cloth case with a hard shell inside of it that zips closed on the end and the multiple pieces slide into little sleeves inside of it. Or it might be a hard outer shell with a soft interior that keeps your guides and blank parts protected. These are nice when you plan to carry your travel rods separate from your luggage. Or keep them in a vehicle on your travels.

A travel rod roll is just a cloth sleeve with individual pockets for each piece of the blank and then you roll it up with flap that closes on one end and tie it off with the attached ties. These can be nice for putting a rod or two into your other travel bags or a small compartment in your vehicle.

A travel bag can be just a cloth bag or a padded foam bag that houses and protects the rod simultaneously. I’m a fan of these as they keep your pieces from falling out as sometimes happens with rolls. And they keep the blank pieces with a bit of added protection. The padded bags are ideal in my opinion.

Best Travel Rod Brands

In the freshwater space, the best travel rod makers are often synonymous with the best rod makers. Makers like Daiwa, Shimano, St. Croix, Megabass, Ark Rods, Fenwick, and others have really solid travel rod options. Others that many don’t know offer travel rods have good options like Favorite, Bass Pro, and BnM Poles.

Here are the travel rod brands we reviewed and liked:

  • Favorite Fishing
  • B’n’M Poles

Having said all that, let’s take a closer look at some of our personal favorites in various travel rod categories.

Best Telescoping Travel Combo

Daiwa travel combo.

We chose the Daiwa Travel Combo as the best combo because it comes with a good reel, telescoping rod that is better than most and it’s own sling carry bag that is big enough to put several travel rods and reels in. This combo compacts down to 26 inches making it a perfect option for any trip whether it be in a car or a plane.

The rod is a 7-foot, 2-inch Medium power fast action rod. It’s a solid rod and stayed extended as we fished with it. The reel is a 2-bearing Daiwa Crossfire LT 2500. Even though it’s only 2 bearings, it performed very smoothly and effortlessly with a very smooth drag. It’s a solid spinning combo and it’s offered in EVA or Cork grips.

The combo costs $149 but if you just want a good combo without messing around with pairing rods and reels, this is a quick easy choice.

Best Travel Rod for Bass

Shimano zodias travel rod.

The fact that Shimano took one of their best rod lines and converted it into a high-end bass travel rod got me excited. And when I got the new rod in my hand, I was very impressed. I am a big fan of the original Zodias line and was so excited to see this level of quality in a 5-piece travel rod.

This travel rod condenses down to 19 inches when packed, meaning you can literally take it anywhere. And when full assembled you have a very high quality rod full of all the features of the high end one-piece blanks. The 5-piece construction gives the rod more uniform bend than a 2-piece model would.

It has so much power and a steady consistent load when casting. You will forget it’s a travel rod by your second cast. It’s a high end rod that just happens to be in 5 pieces. It has a CI4+ reel seat for lightweight strength and a full carbon monocoque grip which eliminates the use of EVA giving a light rod more sensitivity.

Hi-Power X construction which makes the blanks outermost layer wrapped with carbon tape form that X appearance on the blank that gives more precise actions to the rods with more strength.

You can really lean into fish with this rod without worry. It’s one of the nicest travel rods we’ve tested.

Runner Up: Daiwa Ardito Travel Rod

This is another high-end rod that has been brought down to a travel rod form factor. This rod comes with a very nice hard case and it breaks down to 30 inches (32 in its case). It features a V-flex ferrule joint system. These ferrules don’t require you to jam the rod pieces all the way together and then struggle to separate them. You simply push them until they snug together and you are all set. You can break down and put the rod together in seconds and be fishing as fast as you can thread your line.

The rod has a high-modulus blank, Fuji Aluminum Oxide guides, unsanded micro-pitch blank, split Eva grip and machined nut hood. It’s a high quality rod that pairs nicely with your favorite bait caster. It comes in 7-foot medium, 7-foot medium heavy and 7-foot, 6-inch medium heavy.

Best All-Around / Saltwater Travel Rod

St. croix avid trek rod.

This is a finely crafted American rod with incredible blanks offering uniform performance, strength and ultra-perceptive sensitivity. The premium cork full grip, and quality blanks featuring St. Croix’s IPC mandrels, SCII high modulus carbon, slim profile ART ferrules, Sea Guide Hero hi-grade guides with zirconia rings and stainless gun smoke frames, sea guide hook keeper, and a 15-year-transferable warranty.

This rod can literally do it all. Going to Louisiana to fish the marshes for bass and redfish, this is your rod. Strong, light, smooth, sensitive and easy to pack. The 3-piece rod is 6-foot, 6-inch MH rod with a lot of power but great castability. This rod is a joy to fish with and you can expect it to last a long time with that kind of warranty.

Best Telescopic Travel Rod

Bass pro aventur1 telescoping rod.

I was pleasantly surprised by the Aventur1 telescoping rod. It features 6 sections but 8 guides for uniform castability and a nice line path while fighting fish. The unique guide system has floating guides as well as guides permanently affixed to the rod sections. So you won’t fight with line on the blank on this travel rod.

The 7-foot medium power rod fished really well and I was pretty taken aback at how nice this rod fished for $59. A rod that will likely always be in my travel plans. With an RT2 graphite blank, Fuji aluminum oxide guides, Fuji reel seat, with EVA split grips and X-Wrap rubber cork butt cap, this is a pretty functional telescoping rod for travel fishing.

Best Big Swimbait Travel Rod

F5 departure travel rods.

The folks at F5 Custom Rods make some of the nicest big swimbait rods available today. These are custom made rods from blanks to handles to accents. They are often very selective in how they build rods and you usually have to get lucky enough to catch a rod on a drop. However, the F5 Departure Travel Rods are often in stock and I picked up a H and XH rod a year or so back.

These are two of my favorite big swimbait rods that I use for crankdowns like the Bull Shad 4×4 and the Toxic Whippersnappers, for glides like the 86 Baits Doomrider, KGB Swimbaits Chad Shad or the Deps Slide Swimmer 250 and of course for my jointed swims like the Bull Shad 8 inch.

The rods are both 3-piece rods and are custom made with a full extra long camo EVA handle. The ones the often sell are split grips. The rod blanks are solid. Even with three pieces I had no issues heaving big baits like the Slide Swimmer which weighs 6 1/2 ounces.

They are going to run you about $289 a piece for these rods. But I am so happy to have them because I can take a pack of my favorite big baits and a very high-end swimbait rod literally everywhere I go to chase trophies all over the country and out of the country for that matter.

Best Travel Rod on a Budget

Favorite fishing army geo rod.

This is an impressive rod not only for the price but for how well this 4-piece rod fishes and fights fish. We caught some really quality bass on this rod this spring and it is a legit fun spinning rod to fish. I love that I threw it in my suitcase, loaded up and went to Arkansas and broke it out and caught a bunch of nice bass that were moving shallow to spawn.

Even my brother-in-law enjoyed fishing with this travel rod. And at $39, it’s a hard rod to pass up. The 4 pieces in their hard travel tube are 26 inches. The pieces are barely 23 inches. The rod is a 7-foot, 2-inch medium-heavy spinning rod. I used it to skip Senkos around shallow cover a lot this spring. And it sets a nice hook and has a ton of backbone to land big bass. Our biggest on it was 6 pounds, 4 ounces this spring.

Runner up: Ugly Stik GX2 4-piece Travel Combo

At $44 at Walmart, you can’t go wrong with this nearly indestructible travel rod. The Ugly Stik has been the staple of affordable travel rods. They can take abuse and continue to catch and land fish.

Best Trout Travel Rod

St. croix trout series pack rod  .

For the adventurer who needs a light and packable trout rod to get to remote locations, this is the Cadillac of adventure rods. This rod says trout, but it’s a dynamite bluegill, crappie and even smallmouth rod for remote streams and creeks. It’s a beautifully built rod at only 2.9 ounces and 3 pieces, it compacts down to be no added weight in your backpack.

I paired it with a small 1000 spinning reel and 4-pound line and really enjoyed fishing this rod a lot. It will become one of my staple creek travel rods now. It throws little baits effortlessly and had a nice backbone for such a light rod. A real joy to fish with.

Best Panfish Telescoping Rod

Bnm poles little mighty telescoping rod  .

I have to admit, I’m a little blow away by this rod. I grew up crappie and bluegill fishing with my father in Florida and Arkansas with telescoping fiberglass rods from B’n’M Poles. So I have a lot of nostalgia when it comes to these types of rod. But the new Little Mighty Rod is something special.

While it’s not technically a travel rod, it’s a telescoping rod that reaches out to 20 feet and breaks down to barely 22 inches. It looks like a bright orange track baton but it extends to a masterful reach out and touch a crappie or bluegill telescoping rod quickly.

One word of caution, be sure you extend the rod small sections first. So grab the string tab on the tip and pull it out that way. Don’t slide the sections out by dumping the open end out or you will have issues with sections getting out of order and blocking each other. Same for breaking it down. Big sections first and be sure to leave the string out when you put the cap on.

Other than that, I enjoyed testing this rod a lot. I honestly didn’t think much of it when I got it. But after using it I can think of all sorts of places I want to take and fish with this rod. Once you get the hang of maneuvering 20 feet of rod with a fish on the end it’s a pretty fun stick to fish with.

This was my original travel rod and I’ve put a lot of miles on it. It’s caught fish in Nebraska, Arkansas, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi. This is a two piece travel rod that comes with a nice padded bag.

The rod joins together nicely and fishes so well. The very narrow blanks are durable and sensitive. I’ve caught fish just about every way you can on these rods. I have the 6-foot, 8-inch MH and the 7-foot, 6-inch MH rods and have flipped, frogged, spinnerbait fished, jigged, cranked, popped a topwater popper and burned a buzz bait with these rods. A great option that gives no sacrifice in performance in a 2-piece travel rod.

SixGill Argos Travel Rods

A very nicely made travel pack rod, the Argos Travel Rod is a 4-piece rod built on a 24T Toray Carbon blank. Comes with a 25 inch travel case. It fishes like your nicest bass rod but you can tuck it under a jacket and take it with you anywhere. The rod loads nicely on the cast and has enough back bone with it’s 7-foot MH frame to fight any size bass you might tangle with. A very nice travel rod option.

Zebco 33 Spincast Telescopic Combo

This is an affordable option at $25 but it’s not made to handle big fish in my opinion. It’s a great rod for catching panfish around a campsite, or of the dock on vacation. But it’s not made for fishing for larger fish. The rod bends easily at the tip under load and the line cuts across the rod to the next guide. So just be cautious with bigger fish on this setup. But for $25, you can catch the heck out of a bunch of panfish with this setup.

Hardy Zephrus FWS Travel Fly Rod

I haven’t had a chance to review the latest offerings from Hardy yet, but one of my all time favorite travel rods is my Hardy Zephrus FWS Travel Fly Rod. It’s a 9-foot, 5-weight rod. It is the perfect pack rod for hiking into remote streams and chasing fish on the fly. This is the Ferrari of travel rods in my opinion. Everything is first class from the aluminum case, styled bag, ferrule covers, and beautiful craftsmanship on the Sintrix 440 blank.

This 7-foot, 4-piece rod is another great do-it all travel rod. It’s a great rod for a lot of different species and lures in that 1/4 ounce to 3/4 ounce size. It breaks down to 25 inches so it will fit in almost all your bags and it comes in a nice hard case with a shoulder strap if you want to carry it on your back while you hike. It’s very well made and fished nicely with a variety of reels.

St. Croix Triumph Travel Rod

This work-horse travel rod serves a ton of different purposes. It’s 6-foot, 6-inch size makes it a great size for tight quarters. I loved fishing some small streams near the house with this rod. A fun little rod for wading creeks or winging around on bigger waters on your travels. It’s small form factor of 24 inches makes it a great pack rod to keep in your vehicle or throw in your bag on long trips. It’s a very nice blank divided into 4 pieces. It’s strong, sensitive and light. A great travel version of their very popular Triumph line.

Travel fishing rods are made for anglers on the go. Wherever you end up, there are new waters to seek out, so the addition of a dedicated travel fishing rod to the arsenal makes sense for aspiring travel anglers. The problem for many years was the lack of quality rods to meet the carry-on restrictions for fishermen traveling on planes. Multi-piece rods were much less common and inferior to more conventional rods; they were also more likely to break.

Thankfully, advances in technology and design have changed the landscape of angling travel. Rod companies are now able to provide traveling anglers with quality options, and the best travel fishing rods fish like their one-piece counterparts.

  • Best Budget & Best Combo: Ugly Stik GX2 Travel Spinning Combo
  • Best for Bass: Abu Garcia IKE Signature Series Travel Spinning Rod
  • Best for Saltwater: G. Loomis Escape GLX Series
  • Best Telescopic: KastKing Blackhawk II Telescopic Fishing Rod
  • Best Fly Rod: Orvis Clearwater

How We Picked the Best Travel Fishing Rods

My first travel-to-fish trip happened when I was seven. We ventured north to fish for northern pike and bass in the Thousand Islands area of the St. Lawrence River. Since that first trip, my wanderlust has persisted, spanning three continents, five countries, eleven states, and three Canadian provinces. I’ve carried rods to all of those places via airline, bush plane, panga, train, car, taxi, subway and hiking boots. In between those adventures, I’ve spent a lot of time talking with fishing industry professionals about travel fishing rods and other assorted gear. Cumulatively, this distilled experience proves highly useful in evaluating travel fishing tackle. While writing this review, I considered the following attributes:

  • Fishing Performance—comparative to one-piece rods
  • Packability
  • Materials and Construction

Best Travel Fishing Rods: Reviews & Recommendations

Ugly Stik GX2 Travel Spinning Combo is the best budget and best combo travel fishing rod.

  • Length(s): 5 feet (light power), 6 feet and 6 feet 6 inches (Both medium power)
  • Numbers of sections: 5 foot rod is 3 pieces; others are 4 pieces
  • Line Rating: Light: 4-10 pound; Medium: 6-15 pound
  • Strong, durable and sensitive graphite and fiberglass construction
  • More economical than buying individual components
  • Strong and durable Ugly Tuff stainless steel guides
  • Shakespeare four-bearing spinning reel, with double anodized aluminum spool
  • Cloth rod and reel travel bag offers only cosmetic protection; not suitable for checked luggage.

According to Shakespeare lore, the Ugly Stik received its now world-familiar moniker when a product management executive took one look at the first prototype blanks and said they were the ugliest he’d ever seen.

The most updated version is more aesthetically appealing, but it hasn’t lost its rugged durability or the signature clear tip segment. The Ugly Stik Travel Combo comes in three lengths and two power options (light and medium). Each rod is fitted with a solid Shakespeare four-bearing reel with oversized bail wire for added durability. And the entire combo is at a price point that won’t break the bank.

These travel outfits make a solid choice for those trips focused on activities other than angling where you just might be able to fit in a little fishing anyway. They also make excellent entry-level outfits for kids and fishing rods for beginners . From personal experience, I’ll also say that these rods can handle those unexpected trophies that have a knack for biting when you’re just helping the kids catch a few bluegills.

Abu Garcia IKE Signature Series Travel Spinning Rod is the best travel fishing rod for bass.

  • Length(s): 7 feet
  • Numbers of Sections: Four pieces—butt section, midsection and two tip sections for increased versatility
  • Tip Sections: medium light—for 1/8 to 5/8 ounce lures and medium for 1/4 to 3/4 ounce lures
  • Line Rating: medium light: 6-12 pound; medium: 8-14 pound
  • Two tip sections offers great versatility
  • Fishes like a one-piece rod
  • Excellent sensitivity
  • Doesn’t include a crush-proof case for checked luggage protection

Abu Garcia was smart to partner with Mike “Ike” Iaconelli in designing this rod. Twenty plus years as a bass tournament professional coupled with his additional experience as a city fishing enthusiast provided the ideal experiential foundation for crafting top notch travel fishing rods.

The Ike Signature Series Travel Spinning Rod is an exceptional value and an incredibly versatile fishing tool. Quality components are a significant part of the winning formula. The rod blanks are constructed from 36-ton graphite and finished rods have stainless steel guides and a high quality reel seat. The use of a continuous graphite ferrule is key to allowing this rod to fish like a one-piece rod. If all of this isn’t enough, then add in the best feature—the versatility provided with interchangeable tips. This combination allows you to fish an extended range of lures and finesse baits. Anglers looking for a more powerful bass fishing tool should consider checking out the casting rod version .

G. Loomis Escape GLX Series is the best travel fishing rod for saltwater.

  • Length(s): 7 feet in two power options, medium-light and medium
  • Numbers of Sections: three
  • Line Rating: Medium-light: 6-12 pound; Medium: 10-17 pound
  • Multi-taper design offers a superior blend of durability and performance
  • Nickel-Titanium RECOIL guides
  • High quality cork grip
  • Light weight
  • Difficult to find stock, at the moment

Very rarely will I say that a rod has the potential to enable a competent angler to catch more fish. The G. Loomis Escape GLX rods are an exception to this rule. Hands down, these are some of the finest fishing rods made today.

G. Loomis has been making fishing rods focused on performance since 1982. I bought my first GLX rod in 1999 and I still fish it today; I think that says a lot about both the quality and durability of the GLX line of rods. Loomis’ rod building expertise has led to superior travel rods that compromise nothing in a multi-piece design. Their proprietary Multi-taper Design process strengthens potential break points while reducing material application elsewhere. The result is strength and sensitivity. The Nickel-Titanium RECOIL guides used on these rods are amazingly tough and the cork grip provides a comfortable feel over days, months and years of fishing.

These rods are amazingly lightweight, given their strength, durability and ability to subdue large saltwater fish. This lightness in hand translates to greater comfort over a long day of fishing. The last cast of the day feels as effortless as the first.

GLX Escape travel spinning rods are available in two models. The medium power model is what I consider the ideal saltwater rod, able to handle large inshore species such as permit and bull redfish. In freshwater, this rod will handle most of the salmonid species, bass and pike. The medium-light model is also a phenomenal light saltwater rod, ideal for small bonefish, puppy drum and schoolie stripers. This rod is also a great crossover rod, whether for large trout, shad or smallmouth bass.

KastKing Blackhawk II Telescopic Fishing Rod is the best telescopic travel fishing rod.

  • Length(s): Casting —7 models from 6 feet, 8 inches to 8 feet; Spinning—7 models from 6 feet, 6 inches to 8 feet
  • Numbers of Sections: All models are telescopic
  • Line Ratings: 6-25 pound, depending on the model
  • Multiple models for diversity and flexibility
  • Quality materials and construction
  • Quick assembly
  • Still not as good as quality multi-piece rods
  • Segments can loosen after significant casting/fishing time

Though I’m not a telescopic rod fan, I see the usefulness of the concept, and the KastKing BlackHawk II is the best telescopic rod I’ve seen. These rods are particularly well suited for anglers who need the added convenience provided by a telescopic rod and aren’t logging serious hours of fishing associated with dedicated travel fishing trips. In other words, they’re ideal for when you’re on vacation and, suddenly, you have an hour or two to go fishing.

KastKing has provided an outstanding array of options, in both casting and spinning rod models. This selection is a great service for potential customers who need to find rods to fit a wide variety of angling scenarios, as well as the inevitable personal preferences.

The BlackHawk II rods are built using KastKing KastFlex 24-Ton Carbon Matrix blanks, with a solid glass tip. Snug-Fit ferrules, stainless steel line guides, graphite reel seats and comfortable EVA handles are used to create a nicely finished rod.

Orvis Clearwater Travel Fly Rod

  • Length:  9 feet
  • Line Weight:  5
  • Action:  Medium-Fast
  • Pieces:  4
  • Warranty:  25-Year
  • A bit heavy

The Orvis Clearwater took home the best value award in our fly rod test last year and was a favorite among our group of editors and testers. For starters, the Clearwater is one of the more affordable fly rods on the market, and it can hold its own with the premium rods that often see a price tag north of a grand. This rod went head-to-head with all of the top-end models, and after a quick blind-casting test, most of our editors put the Clearwater ahead of our favorite high-end rods.

As for performance, the Clearwater throws tight loops and can reach almost as far as any other rod. It’s a bit cumbersome, and you might get tired after a full day on the water. Anglers can pick up a Clearwater rod in sizes ranging from 2-weight to 12-weight. So no matter what fish you enjoy chasing with a fly, there’s a Clearwater rod for you. And since this is a travel fishing rod story, it’s worth mentioning that the Clearwater is a four-piece rod and can be carried on any plane in a rod tube. —Ryan Chelius

Things to Consider Before Buying a Travel Fishing Rod

Travel fishing can be as exotic as a once-in-a-lifetime globetrotting adventure, or as simple as a subway trip to the city pond or lake. In both scenarios, a more compact, travel-friendly fishing outfit will make transit to the destination easier. Before buying a travel fishing rod, consider what species of fish you’re targeting, spatial limitations, mode of transport and the all important time versus money equation.

Target Species

What type or types of fish will you be chasing, and where will you be fishing? An ideal rod for panfish or trout will be outgunned and frustrating to use when targeting big stripers or redfish. Rods and their counterpart reels (meaning the reel you always use with that rod) may be great in freshwater but not up to the abuse they’ll endure in a marine environment. I like versatility in my gear but not to the point of compromising my overall enjoyment. To this end, I think it best to establish realistic expectations and fully understand what my travel rods can and cannot handle.

Spatial Limitations

The first leg of the journey is a commercial airline behemoth with spacious overhead compartments that will easily accommodate your travel rod case. But the final hop comes via a de Havilland Beaver where space is severely limited. Or, perhaps you’re hiking into the backcountry for a multi-day camping and fishing adventure. In each of these scenarios, spatial limitations are different, and in each case it’s important to identify how compact your travel rod (or rods) need to be. This is a question best asked and answered before you depart.

Mode of Transport

In a perfect world, my rods never leave my oversight when I travel to fish. But often that’s just not realistic. So, I opt to plan for the worst and hope for the best. I like when rods come with a crush-proof case. If they don’t, it’s best to invest in a specialized travel rod case that will accommodate the rod or rods you plan to take. When trips require multiple transfers, the added peace of mind alone merits the investment.

If carrying a rod or rods onto an airplane, I find out the airline’s maximum dimensions for carry-on items. If I have any doubt about carry-on options, I make sure the cased rod I’m traveling with will fit in my checked baggage.

Time versus Money

This is an important equation that has additional variability based on a person’s disposable income and priorities. I once commented to a guiding client that I thought everyone should have one area of life where they indulge themselves. His response was, “Why just one?”

Realistically though, most anglers need to evaluate how often, and for how long, they’re likely to use a travel rod, and then factor that into their decision about which rod is best for them. An angler who might, or might not, use the rod once a year on a family vacation will want a different rod from the fisherman or woman who embarks upon one or more dedicated destination fishing trips each year.

Q: Can I carry-on a fishing pole?

According to the TSA (Transportation Security Administration), fishing rods can be carried on, as long as they meet the airline’s criteria for carry-on items. However, it’s best to always work with the specific airline you’ll be traveling with to fine-tune your carry-on planning. If you’re traveling internationally, be sure to also check with air carriers you’ll be flying with in the destination country or countries.  Adhere to their requirements, and your rod should remain in your hands from home to destination and back.

Q: How do you travel with a rod and reel?

I always want to travel with my rods in a hard, crush-proof case and my reels safely stowed in my carry-on fishing bag. Even if my travel rods are compact enough for airline carry-on, I still prefer to carry them in the protective hard case, as plans can sometimes change at the flight check-in. If I have to check the rods, at any point in the journey, I know they’ll be safe. Many people think about the flight process but don’t consider the auto travel on either end of the flight. In my experience, the transition points are when unprotected gear gets broken. Careful packing of your rods and reels extends the safety to these travel transition scenarios. In the “for what it’s worth” column, I’d rather arrive at a fishing destination without my clothes than my rods and reels. But happily this can be avoided by using a change of clothes as padding around your rods in the travel case. This way you arrive with your rods, reels and at least one spare outfit.

Q: Can you carry-on a 4-piece fly rod?

Yes, most conventional 4-piece fly rods will meet airline criteria for carry-on luggage. I’ve traveled with 4-piece, ten foot fly rods to Chile, Mexico, England and remote north western Canada. I’ve never had any difficulty carrying-on my fly rods. That being said, it’s still always best to check with the airline in-question in advance. If you’re working with an experienced fishing travel service, they can also provide their experience traveling to your destination. For additional thoughts on this topic, check out our in-depth breakdown of the best fly rods .

Q: Can I fly with fishing lures?

According to the TSA, fishing lures are defined as “sharp fishing tackle that may be considered dangerous.” They recommend sheathing or otherwise securing hooks; the lures should then be securely wrapped and packed in your checked baggage. Based on this information, any hooks, lures or flies in your carry-on could be confiscated. For anglers, the problem with this approach is the fear of arriving at a remote fishing destination with nothing to fish. To alleviate this concern, I pack a small selection of must-have flies or lures that I put in my carry-on bag—think of it as an emergency kit. I keep the selection small enough that I can accept the loss if it’s ever confiscated. The bulk of my fishing lures are packed safely in my checked bag and include duplicates of the essentials.

Q: What is the difference between a travel rod and a standard rod?

A travel fishing rod can break down into small sections or telescope into one small piece. A normal fishing rod is often one, two, or four pieces. This makes it a bit more difficult to travel with.

Q: Are travel rods worth it?

Having a fishing rod that can break down into small pieces is definitely worth it. You don’t necessarily need a “travel fishing rod,” but rather something that breaks down into three or four pieces so it’s easier to travel with.

Best Traveling Fishing Rods: Final Thoughts

Whether you’re embarking upon a bucket-list adventure fishing trip or hoping to get in a little fishing while traveling with the family, it all depends on your tackle getting to the destination unbroken and functional. That defines why travel rods have become so important for modern anglers, and the importance extends beyond airline travel. Try carrying a one-piece rod on a busy subway and you quickly realize the value of travel rods for close-to-home fishing.

Though many travel rods still fall short of their one-piece counterparts’ performance, advances in technologies and economies of scale have closed this gap. In some cases, the best travel fishing rods are indistinguishable from one or two-piece rods. To decide which travel rod is right for you, evaluate your target species, consider spatial limitations, mode of transportation and time versus money. Then, just add water and enjoy the fishing.

Our Top Choice

good travel reel

This multi-piece rod and reel combo can allow you to be prepared for every fishing opportunity at all times. It’s made from resilient materials and can be utilized for a variety of freshwater species. Given that the pole is made out of graphite, it doesn’t weigh too much and therefore, it will be a pleasure to hold in your hands.

Some owners might find that they have to retighten everything from time to time. This is an issue that occurs with many multi-piece travel rods.

Given its cost, the value it offers, and the fact that it is made from great materials, this unit is definitely worth checking out.

good travel reel

This ultralight system has been designed specifically for panfish, so you might not be able to utilize it for large and heavy species. Nonetheless, the product promises a smooth and reliable performance thanks to the excellent multi-piece rod and 4.9:1 reel. This alternative is also quite affordable, especially compared to others.

Various users say that it is still a better idea to opt for a telescopic rod and reel combo instead of a multi-piece one as the construction might be flimsy.

Because it is a durable and well-designed choice, you might have to give this one a shot, as well. It also doesn’t break the bank.

Also To Consider

good travel reel

In the neatly packed case supplied with your purchase, you will find a telescopic rod that is easy to put together, a graphite reel that offers smooth operation, and a wide variety of lures and accessories. The compact design makes it a fine choice for those who value portability above everything else. Comfort and convenience are two important traits of this combo kit.

Because both the rod and reel are relatively small, they are not suitable for catching big fish that might struggle a lot.

A compact and convenient kit that contains, besides a rod and a reel, all the necessary tackle so you can start fishing right away.

A multi-disc drag system makes the reel on this model an absolute winner because of the excellent performance offered.

You will surely appreciate the plethora of accessories offered, such as offset worm hooks, grubs, a crankbait, monofilament fishing line, and many others.

Everything about this kit caters to comfort and convenience, as you can tell from the soft-touch handle knob, and the stainless steel guides present.

You must know that both the reel and the rod are on the small side, so they might not be the best solution if what you have in mind is going after big fish that fight a lot.

4. Sougayilang Spinning Fishing Rod and Reel Combos

The telescopic fishing pole included in this combo is made from carbon fiber, so it’s lightweight and portable. Since you probably want to get this combo so that you can travel without any problems with your fishing gear in tow, that’s a significant benefit. Along with the rod, you will receive a dependable reel and multiple other accessories.

Among these, you will find three fishing lures, 110 yards of fishing line, and others. You will be able to go on your fishing trip without having to spend extra. You will notice that the rod is a bit stiff, and that happens because of the combination of fiberglass and carbon fiber.

The guide rings are made from ceramic, and that’s a puzzle since this aspect will ensure that the line will suffer significantly less friction on the retrieve. The reel comes with 13+1 ball bearings that offer smooth operation, while the EVA handle provides non-slip, comfortable performance.

Regardless of whether you go freshwater or saltwater fishing, this combo will serve you well.

The eyelets come unglued once in a while, so you will need to employ some maintenance to keep the setup working as it should.

Overall, the rod is not on par, quality-wise, with the reel, and you may want to replace it after a while.

5. Plusinno Fishing Rod and Reel Combos Telescopic Rod

If you’re looking for an affordable rod and reel combo to get you started with your fishing passion, this package from Plusinno could prove a smart investment in the long term. It is available in four sizes, ranging from 5.91 feet to 8.86 feet, depending on how far you want to cast and what type of fish you’re mainly interested in.

Keep in mind that the combo only includes the rod and the reel, so there are no lures or lines, which means you’ll have to purchase them separately.

The fishing pole provides perfect elasticity thanks to its high-density carbon fiber construction combined with fiberglass. As a result, you’re looking at a hard and durable product that will resist the wind, various water conditions, and the test of time.

The stainless steel hooded reel seat is made from the best materials to resist corrosion and rust caused by seawater, while the EVA fore grip adds comfort and ensures a good grip.

The telescopic fishing rod is portable, lightweight, and convenient to carry around, delivering a medium intensity power, suitable for many small and medium-sized fish.

Thanks to the instant anti-reverse function, the combo is equipped for high strength to allow you to enjoy a good fishing experience, regardless of your level of expertise.

The pole is made of high-density carbon fiber and fiberglass to deliver durability and strength, so you won’t have to worry about it breaking or chipping in time.

There is also the option to purchase the full kit that, apart from the rod and reel, also includes one line, one fishing lure, and a carrier bag for convenient and easy transportation and storage.

The set of the rod and reel, although sturdy, is also heavy and doesn’t seem weighted too well. It is also stiff which means you have to make some adjustments to match various types of fishing.

The stiffness of the rod may also cause hand fatigue and pain when you spend long hours with your rod.

6. Flying Fisherman Passport Travel Fishing Rod

Are you looking for a reliable yet affordable rod that will help you improve your fishing techniques and catch the biggest fish in the pond? The new Passport Travel rod from Flying Fisherman is made of high-quality Japanese graphite and includes an outstanding Portuguese cork for improved gripping. Besides, the handle will reduce hand fatigue even when you’re operating the rod for many hours in a row.

The product is available in three styles – light, medium, and heavy, depending on your fishing style and the kind of fish you would like to catch. The blank taper is specifically designed to increase strength, sensitivity, and performance, allowing you to easily sense whenever the fish bites the bait.

Unlike other products with similar price tags, this one is delivered in a protective case that will absorb shocks and will keep your fishing gear away from dust, salt, and sun exposure.

The item is designed to meet the needs of both professional anglers and amateurs, and it is available in three sizes, depending on your fishing style and technique.

The rod is made of superior-quality graphite that won’t chip, rust or corrode in time, while the cork-like handle ensures a firm grip. It will protect your hands from sweating and will prevent hand fatigue, even when operating the rod for a long time.

The blank taper will improve sensitivity, allowing you to feel even the slightest move of a fish that took the bait. As a result, you won’t let any fish escape.

The rod is delivered in a protective case that absorbs shocks.

Some customers mentioned the handle construction is quite flimsy, allowing it to bounce back and forth and losing balance.

It doesn’t absorb hand sweat as good as advertised either, so you may require extra protection if you plan on fishing in the hot summer sun.

Buying guide

Almost anywhere you go you can find at least one great spot to drop in a line, as long as you have your gear with you. Carrying around a 6 foot or even a 4 foot fishing rod is not always practical, and this can leave you without your gear. A travel rod and reel combo is easily portable so you are always ready to fish. If you are interested in the best rod and reel combo for the money but don’t know what to look for, the following tips in this buying guide will help you get started.

A.1 Best travel rod and reel combo - 1000

The travel rod and reel reviews all agree that you first one to decide on a budget before you start shopping. Not only will this help narrow down your choices, it will also ensure that the rod and reel combo is exactly what you need. While you don’t have to spend a lot of money on a good rod and reel, you do want to be careful and not purchase an inferior product. You don’t want your gear to break when you are in the middle of your trip.

Since this is a travel combo you want the rod to be easy to break down or collapse to a manageable size. This is true for rods of any size, even shorter 4 foot models. The construction of the rod will vary according to your needs and preferences, with graphite being the lightest and fiberglass the heaviest. Graphite is also sensitive, while fiberglass rods are less prone to breaking. You can also find composite rods which have some of the attributes of both materials.

Stainless steel guides are durable and resistant to corrosion, and will ensure you line flows smoothly. You also want to make sure that the handle is comfortable to grasp, and that it is wrapped in EVA foam or soft cork.

Spinning reels are typically preferred by experienced anglers since they have more control over their line. Beginners usually do better with a spincast reel since its closed face designed prevents snarls and tangles in the line. Both types of reels can be found with travel fishing combos, and the right one for you will often depend on your skill level. You do want to make sure that the gears and ball bearings are constructed from a durable metal so you can depend on a reliable performance.

Sougayilang Combo

3.Sougayilang Spinning Telescopic

The rod is constructed from a composite material so it is relatively lightweight, flexible and sensitive. This not only allows you to feel every nibble, but it also makes the telescopic rod easier to handle on long distance casts.

The durable guides ensure that rigging is a breeze, and since they are resistant to corrosion you don’t have to worry about friction interfering with the flow of the line.

The spinning reel is also designed to be lightweight, and to provide you with exceptionally smooth casts and retrievals.

Comprising a fishing rod and reel, this combo kit provides value for the money. Consumers who want to optimize every penny they spend on their fishing rig will appreciate this option.

Portable and proven to be easy to use, this choice features a carbon fiber fishing rod that offers a high density to deliver reliable performance through the years with its durability. The rod has an assembled length of 6.56 feet and retracts to an easy-to-transport 1.34 feet.

With its 11 ball bearings, the fishing reel in the package runs smoothly in releasing the line as well as during the cast. The device offers a variety of line capacities for versatility in functionality.

The rod’s portable closed length design does not compromise its capacity to handle heavy load and to still offer good elasticity.

A customer has noted that the reel seat appears to spin freely from the rest of the rod since it isn’t anchored to the pole that runs through the reel seat center.

Not only this, but the construction and feel of this setup can make you enjoy your angling trip a lot more. The neat thing about this combo is that it boasts a reliable graphite construction, thus making you entirely capable of enjoying a light, yet totally reliable feel. Smooth retrieves become a reality with the help of this ensemble as the reel comes with an extra bearing for this purpose.

What’s more, you won’t have any issue getting a solid grip on the situation as the pole has been outfitted with EVA foam grips. Besides, it’s worth noting that the product is accompanied by a miniature tackle box where you can store anything from your hooks to your swivels and lures. When it comes to portability, this Daiwa option is a net winner.

As for the user feedback, you might want to know that most of the fishermen and women who have chosen the combo say that it makes a great compact choice for those moments when a fishing occasion arises by accident.

Far from being just a toy tackle kit, this option features a full-size fishing outfit that you can effortlessly bring to any fishing location anytime.

In the briefcase-style hard case, you can find a removable, miniature tackle box that provides easy storage for essential gear including hooks, swivels, lures, and others. An integrated space is available for spare spools of fishing line.

Included in the package is a Daiwa Wilderness light action fly/spinning rod that breaks down into 6 pieces and when fully assembled, measures 6 feet 6 inches.

You won’t get hand fatigue too easily thanks to the rod’s EVA foam grips that ensure handling comfort. The component is also designed to be resistant to dents and chipping.

Attaching the fishing reel is easy thanks to the unlocking reel seat, which allows the rod to adapt to your reel of choice as well.

Although one customer likes the kit overall, they wish there was more space in the kit to accommodate more gear.

Ugly Stik Spinning Fishing Combo Kit

The item is available in two styles, one designed for freshwater, and the other one for saltwater, but we recommend purchasing them both to allow extended flexibility when fishing. The set contains a two-piece spinning rod and a reel.

The spinning reel is made of high-quality graphite that won’t chip or break when getting in contact with water. Therefore, you will be able to enjoy the same product for many years from now on. The items are both lightweight and durable, allowing you to easily carry them with you anywhere you go.

When purchasing this reel kit, you’ll also receive a high-quality fishing line, suitable for casting it in saltwater or freshwater. The maximum line weight the spool on this kit can hold is 17 pounds, enough for small-to-medium-sized fish. Moreover, you can cast it up to 225 yards away, making the product suitable for rock fishing and shore fishing.

Purchasing the kit, you’ll get all the necessary accessories for a fruitful fishing trip, including assorted tackles and a high-quality line that helps you cast up to 225 yards away and catch fish up to 17 pounds.

The two-piece spinning rod is lightweight and convenient to carry as it won’t occupy too much space in your luggage.

You can choose between the saltwater kit and the freshwater kit, allowing you to fully customize your fishing experience according to your needs and improving your chance of catching the big fish.

The spinning reel is made of superior-quality graphite and features a top coat that will prevent rusting or chipping when exposed to water or sun rays.

According to some customers who purchased the set, the handle is rather loose and flimsy, so you need to pay extra care when fishing for the big catch.

CAPACI Portable Telescopic Fishing Rod and Reel Combos

Another solution for those who want a complete fishing kit to take with them on their trips is this model from CAPACI. You will get a telescopic rod made from carbon fiber, a reel, a carrying bag, fishing line, and some accessories that will help you make the best out of your fishing adventure.

The fishing rod is made from a combination of high-density carbon and fiberglass so that you can experience proper heat dissipation, durability, and sensitivity. The guides are designed to offer a low friction coefficient to ensure that your line won’t get damaged.

The reel is another solid reason why this kit enjoys a lot of positive feedback from users. It is sealed to protect water and dust, while the line roller helps prevent twists and tangles. The bag offered for carrying all the elements of the kit is also of high quality.

The fishing rod included in this kit is made from durable materials that ensure that you will be able to use it for a long time.

You will also discover that the reel is a heavy-duty model designed to repel water and dust for long-lasting performance.

A dual knob design makes the reel stable, and you will be able to enjoy excellent control.

If you want to go fishing right away, you will be happy to see that there are 23 accessories included, along with monofilament line.

The rod is pretty stiff for what you might expect from a carbon fiber model, and that means that there is a risk that it might break at the tip.

Also, the monofilament line provided is not particularly sturdy, and you shouldn’t use it for anything other than small fish.

Eagle Claw Unisex’s Pack-It Spinning Telescopic Fishing Rod

This telescopic spinning rod comes with an adjustable length that allows you to easily carry it with you in your backpack, without occupying too much space or being too heavy.

It is made of durable glass, perfect for trunk, trail or turbo-prop. The handle is made of EVA foam to perfectly mold on your palms, ensuring a strong grip and preventing hand fatigue, even when handling it for many hours. Therefore, you will enjoy a fruitful fishing trip without hurting your hands in the process.

The reel seat is made of graphite, while the ceramic guides complete the look on this telescopic rod.

The product makes the perfect choice for anglers on the go and is suitable for both beginners and professionals, helping you catch more fish. Most customers who purchased the item agreed on its quality, stating that it is also affordable. So why not give it a try on your own and let us know what you think?

Solid and reliable, you can count on this telescopic rod to help you catch as many fish as you want, regardless of your skills.

The telescopic handle makes it easy and convenient to transport, as it can fit in any backpack without occupying too much space either.

The handle is made of soft and durable EVA foam, ensuring a stable and secure grip. It perfectly molds on your hands, reducing hand fatigue to a minimum, even when operating it for many hours.

We also liked that the item is lightweight, so you won’t have to worry about hurting your hand or your shoulder when transporting it.

When it reaches the maximum length, the product tends to get stuck in this position, defeating the entire purpose of having a telescopic rod in the first place. We suggest you handle the item carefully, without any sudden moves.

Its laid-back yet cheerful melody adds a mellow feel to travel videos, while its pleasant and easygoing tone complements your travel scenes and experiences with light and positive energy.

The song’s calm and soothing ambience makes it ideal for serene moments and slower-paced travel scenes. Its mellow vibe pairs well with peaceful and reflective visuals, creating a relaxed and meditative atmosphere such as a tranquil sunset or serene landscapes.

I find the song works best at 0.29 seconds into the track when the melody starts to kick in.

11. Makeba – Jain

This song has a catchy rhythm and a blend of diverse sounds, giving off a cheerful and vibrant vibe drawing from Afrobeat influences. Jain’s spirited vocals create an exciting atmosphere that captures the thrill of exploration and adventure with an exotic and adventurous feel.

There is also a little dance that’s popular with this track that you could try on the beach or any location. Not my cup of tea but each to their own!

12. Past Lives – Sapientdream

A song with 113 million views and 50k comments on YouTube must tell you something. Not that it was a commercial success or made for pop culture but that it’s a song that resonates with many of us in a different way.

This delightful and laid-back track will always remind me of my backpacking days in Thailand . With its calming melody and Johnson’s warm vocals, the album ‘In Between Dreams’ was the soundtrack of Southeast Asia in the mid-2000s.

The song is perfect for anyone wishing to showcase their travels to those perfectly laid-back, sun-drenched days in far-off destinations.

14. Follow The Sun – Xavier Rudd

Having been around since 2012, Follow The Sun, by Xavier Rudd, has slowly found its way into chilled, summer acoustic playlists on all streaming platforms.

The track presents a mellow and easygoing melody that is perfect for Instagram reels featuring travel experiences. The mellow, easy-going song encapsulates a laid-back, feel-good vibe, making it an awesome choice for relaxed moments during your travels.

Its soothing acoustic tones and Rudd’s complement the slower-paced, serene aspects of travel, making it an excellent match for peaceful and reflective scenes in your travel content.

15. Ocean Eyes – Billie Eilish

It’s hard to believe that this debut single from pop superstar Billie Eilish was released in 2015. Eilish’s soothing voice and the song’s dreamy, enchanting melody would go perfectly with serene landscapes, reflective moments, and scenic beauty.

Ocen Eyes offers a dreamy and introspective vibe that goes with breathtaking vistas, peaceful settings, and the emotional connection you can have during your dreamy escape.

It evokes a sense of wanderlust and introspection, enhancing the visual storytelling of peaceful and tranquil travel scenes in your travel videos.

This lively and uplifting tune radiates a sense of enthusiasm and adventure, perfectly matching thrilling travel experiences. With its upbeat rhythm and spirited lyrics, it’s an ideal choice for capturing exhilarating activities, vibrant city tours, and exciting escapades.

This song is an awesome choice for thrilling road trips or adrenaline-filled explorations. Using the verse and chorus separately can also alter the mood of your video depending on what you’re going for.

17. Now We Are Free – Hans Zimmer & Lisa Gerrard

What is it about Hans Zimmer? Not only is he one of the best composers out there, but he always seems to be on the soundtracks of my favourite movies!

Here he’s teamed up with Lisa Gerrard to offer a powerful, emotive track from the movie Gladiator that can beautifully complement your Instagram reels. The song’s majestic orchestration and evocative tones create a grand sense of adventure, fitting for breathtaking landscape shots and awe-inspiring travel moments.

It’s an ideal piece for scenic views, cultural explorations, and life-changing travel experiences. If you want to post serene sunsets or monumental landmarks, this track is the one you’ve been looking for.

18. Golden Hour – JVKE

I’ve only just found this track whilst looking for the perfect sunset song for one of my Instagram stories.

Jeff stands with a dog on the bank of a river next the U-Bein Bridge at sunrise.

Golden Hour is vibrant and upbeat with positive energy with lovely vocals, especially the atmospheric chorus. This catchy tune serves as an excellent backdrop for sun-kissed landscapes and exciting adventures.

Its joyful rhythm matches the carefree spirit of travel and can elevate the mood of your dreamy content. It would be an ideal match for lush sunsets, joyous experiences and outdoor explorations and there are now several variations of the song available.

19. Snowfall – Øneheart x Reidenshi

Although ‘Snowfall’ has no lyrics, it’s still a mellow and atmospheric tune that complements dreamy landscapes and snowy destinations.

With its tranquil vibe and ambient sounds, this song is an ideal match for serene and scenic moments captured during travels. You don’t have to just use it for snowy landscapes. It’s also great for peaceful settings and reflective journeys.

The song sets a calming tone for your videos and stories. The next time you want to capture the quieter, contemplative side of travel, use this soothing melody to show the beauty of what you’ve just caught on camera.

20. On Top of the World – Imagine Dragons

Want an uplifting and spirited track? Then ‘On Top of the World’ by the popular group Imagine Dragons is the one for you.

Its vibrant beat and jubilant energy will suit moments of adventure and triumph. With lyrics that evoke a sense of excitement, this song will add a positive and invigorating touch to your travel videos.

I think I’ve used this song nearly every time I’ve climbed to the top of something whether that be a mountain or a building. It never gets old!

21. I Got Summer on My Mind – Elli Eli

Those of us who remember the West Coast anthem ‘Still D.R.E.’ by Dr Dre will either love or hate this song that samples the track.

It feels like Sia has been around forever. While she had success with Zero 7, it wasn’t until 2015 that she broke through as a solo artist.

Unstoppable was released in 2016 and remains one of her biggest hits and most used songs in travel content. The high-energy and empowering track with its motivational lyrics fits so well with exploration, adventure, and personal triumphs.

The song’s powerful and confident message amplifies scenes of overcoming challenges and seizing the moment while travelling. Think summiting mountains and completing multi-day treks!

26. Riptide – Vance Joy

One of my favourite songs to use on my travel content, ‘Riptide’ by Vance Joy brings a light and breezy feel to reels and stories.

Jeff is on a motorcycle in Myanmar

I’ve used this one often and it worked well for things like road trips around Albania or motorcycle trips when visiting Bali or Vietnam!

The catchy ukulele riffs and upbeat tempo of this song are perfect for the carefree moments during your adventures. The track’s relaxed vibe creates an atmosphere of fun and leisure, ideal for visuals of road trips, beach outings, or exploration in beautiful locations.

It’s somehow energetic, yet relaxed making it an excellent choice for those scenes of casual exploration and memorable travel moments.

27. Blue Sea – Buffalo

When I hear ‘Blue Sea’ by Buffalo I instantly dream of far-off shores! It must be the sound of waves from this enticing and mellow track!

The calming melodies and soothing vibes create an ideal backdrop for any dreamy sea-related content. Whether that be cockatiels in a beach bar or simply chilling in a hammock the song gives off a peaceful and scenic feel.

There are no lyrics to this song so you could listen to it on an endless loop and never even realise!

28. Dancing In The Moonlight – Jubël

This 2020 cover of ‘Dancing In The Moonlight’ by Jubël is an upbeat track that takes a chilled classic and turns it into a lively, energetic song ready for scenes of fun and joy during adventures.

The song’s modern reimagining creates a cheerful atmosphere and inviting melody, making it a great choice for carefree moments, friendships, and vibrant travel scenes.

While this song is a great choice for your content, I would also suggest another Jubël hit – Klingande (wait for the dreamy saxophone part!)

29. On The Road Again – Willie Nelson

An utter classic that works on many levels! ‘On the Road Again’ was released back in 1980 and is a timeless anthem

The song encapsulates the adventurous spirit of being on the move, making it an excellent choice for any journey highlights. With its classic country sound and upbeat tempo, it’s perfect for road trips, exploration, and adventures.

Nelson’s spirited tune serves as an excellent choice for moments that capture the thrill and joy of travel experiences.

How Do You Make A Good Travel Reel?

Making a good travel reel, Insta story or TikTok doesn’t have to be difficult. You’ll naturally capture visually stunning content since you’re already travelling to epic destinations.

If you want to try and jazz up your reels and content, here are some tips to help:

  • Use different angles to create different perspectives (try wide angle.)
  • Check out some of the trending reels and stories for inspiration.
  • Add text, like titles and inspirational captions if you feel the viewer can benefit.
  • Choose an epic song for your travel reel from the list I just gave you.
  • Don’t let filters overpower your content.
  • Edit for the timing of the music if this adds to the flow.

Apart from that, the best advice is to just have fun with it. Remember that content is a result of your travel experiences, not the other way around!

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

OMG I dream to visit Moscow someday! Hope the visa processing would be okay (and become more affordable) so I could pursue my dream trip!

Yup, visa processing is the major downside! Agree! Time and the money consuming process…

Moscow Travel Guide: Best Things to Do + More [2023]

· everything to know about visiting moscow, including the best things to do and how to get around. ·.

the red st basils church in moscow on a white winters day

Moscow is Russia’s vibrant capital city, and it also happens to be the largest city in all of Europe. The city’s long and infamous history makes it one of the most unique places we have ever visited.

The architecture ranges from centuries-old palaces to uniform, gray concrete buildings. The people range from cold and private to warm and welcoming. Moscow is a city is strong juxtapositions, and we learned a lot during our time there.

This post will break down all you need to know about visiting Moscow, including the best things to do, how to get there, how to get around, and more.

The Best Things to Do in Moscow

1. explore the red square.

The Red Square is the heart of Moscow. Most of the city’s top attractions can be found here, including just about everything on this list. The Kremlin, St. Basil’s Cathedral, and Lenin’s Mausoleum are all located here, and the State Historical Museum and GUM are not far from here, either.

The Red Square is a common home for parades, protests, and seasonal celebrations. There are massive Christmas celebrations here, with food vendors and carnival rides set up in numbers.

2. Check Out the Ziferblat

The Ziferblat is a café in Moscow that is unlike any café we have ever been to. While most cafes charge you for your drinks and food, the Ziferblat charges you for your time.

Upon arrival, you are given a clock. When you leave, the barista calculates how much time you spent in the café and charges you accordingly. This concept was created to help visitors to be more intentional with their time, and the cafe itself is incredibly charming.

For a detailed look at everything you need to know before you visit, make sure you read my post about visiting the Ziferblat Cafe in Moscow .

3. Marvel at St. Basil’s Cathedral

St. Basil’s Cathedral is one of the most iconic churches in the world, and it was the single thing we were most excited to see while in Moscow. Built almost 500 years ago, St. Basil’s Cathedral is recognized by its colorful domes and whimsical style. The church is of the Russian Orthodox faith, and the inside is just as wondrous as the outside.

St. Basil’s Cathedral is located on the edge of the Red Square, making it incredibly convenient to visit. Entrance for non-worshippers costs 800 rubles, and tickets can be bought at the church

4. Explore the Kremlin

The Kremlin is the largest active fortress in Europe, and it is the site of most of Russia’s government affairs. In addition to government buildings, the Kremlin Complex is filled with courtyards, towers, and museums that are open to the public. If you have the time, you could spend a couple of days fully exploring all that there is to see in the Kremlin.

5. Walk Through Lenin’s Mausoleum

Vladimir Lenin is one of the most important figures in Russian history, and his body is located perfectly embalmed in a mausoleum in the Red Square. The Mausoleum is open to the public to visit, and as long as you are willing to go through a few security checks, it is easily one of the best things to do in Moscow. Its convenient location in the Red Square makes it a can’t miss attraction.

There is absolutely no photography allowed inside the Mausoleum. Do not test this rule.

6. Wander Along Arbat Street

The Arbat is a very popular street in Moscow that is lined with stores, cafes, and other touristy attractions. It is one of the oldest streets in the city, dating back to the 1400s. This street is both quaint and trendy, and there are many walking tours that introduce tourists to the neighborhood’s wonders and highlights.

7. Catch a Show at the Bolshoi Theatre

As a lover of the arts, it is hard to think of Moscow and not think of ballet. Russia has always been a top dog in the world of fine arts, and Bolshoi Theater is one of the best places to catch a performance. We were lucky enough to attend an Opera here, and it is a venue that you don’t want to miss out on if you enjoy opera, ballet, or orchestral performances.

8. Visit the State Historical Museum

The State Historical Museum is one of the most respected museums in Moscow. Despite its name, it is not really focused on the history of Russia as a nation. Rather, it contains a collection of artifacts from all throughout Russia’s history.

The museum’s collection is very broad in nature. It houses some items from indigenous tribes that used to occupy the region, pieces collected by the Romanov family, and more.

9. Wander Around GUM

GUM is an absolutely massive mall within walking distance of the Red Square. It isn’t just the size that draws visitors here; it’s the sense of luxury. The mall is so beautiful inside, much like the metro stations.

While visiting a mall might not sound like it belongs on a bucket list, this mall does. You will not want to miss out on visiting GUM while in Moscow.

10. Admire the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour

While St. Basil’s Cathedral is the most iconic church in Moscow, it isn’t the only one. The Cathedral of Christ the Saviour is absolutely stunning, with massive golden domes. It is the tallest Orthodox church in the world, and it is the seat of the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow.

It is located just about a mile from the Red Square, just south of the Kremlin Complex. You can walk to it from the Red Square in about 20 minutes.

How to Get to Moscow

Flying to moscow.

Moscow has three major international airports: Sheremetyevo (SVO) , Domodedovo (DMO) , and Vnukovo (VKO) . All three of them are directly connected to downtown Moscow by the Aeroexpress trains, which leave every 30 minutes throughout the day. By Aeroexpress train, you can expect to get to the city center in 25-45 minutes depending on the airport that you fly into.

Sheremetyevo is the biggest and busiest of the three airports, and it is the one you are most likely to fly into – especially if you are coming from outside of Europe or the Caucus region. We flew into Sheremetyevo on a direct flight from New York City.

I usually provide backup airport options, because flying right into the city isn’t always the cheapest way to get where you’re going. Unfortunately, when it comes to Moscow, don’t really have a choice other than to fly right into Moscow. It is a very remote city, and it is usually the cheapest place to fly into in Russia as a whole.

Since Sheremetyevo is so busy, you will probably find a great flight option anyway. I wrote in  my post about finding cheap flights  that using hub airports will lead to more affordable airfare, and the same logic applies here. Even though Russia’s national airline, Aeroflot, is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Moscow is still a major hub connecting passengers from all over the world.

Train or Bus to Moscow

Trains and buses are one of the most popular ways to get around Europe. However, they’re of very little use when you’re trying to get to Moscow.

Moscow is hundreds of miles from the nearest major cities. The only major European city that can even be reached within 8 hours on the ground is St. Petersburg, and even the Baltic capitals of Riga, Vilnius, and Tallinn are over 12 hours away.

If you want to get to Moscow, the best option is almost always to fly. While the train routes to Moscow are scenic, they simply take forever.

How to Get Around Moscow

METRO | TROLLEYS | TRAMS | BUSES

Moscow has one of the most memorable metro systems in the world. Its metro lines are very deep underground, and the stations are absolutely stunning. Each station has its own unique style, but all of them contain escalators that seem to go on forever.

turned-on chandelier on ceiling of moscow metro

The system was built in an effort to showcase the power of the Soviet Union and its bright future. The plans were a form of propaganda, but they resulted in what is still one of the most visually appealing subway systems on earth.

Moscow’s metro system isn’t just pretty. It is also very useful and accessible. The system has 17 lines that connect the city and its surrounding area.

But wait; there’s more!

The Moscow metro system is also incredibly affordable, with each ride costing less than a dollar. The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow, as it is almost impossible to beat the connection times and the low cost to ride.

Tickets can be bought at electronic, English-speaking kiosks in stations, or directly from ticket counters at certain larger stations. There are also day passes available, which are a very solid option if you plan on riding the metro several times per day.

The metro is by far the best way to get around Moscow.

In addition to the metro system, Moscow also has a network of buses, trams, and trolleys. This system is nowhere near as convenient or well-connected as the metro, though, and is likely of little use to you during your trip. There is no Uber in Moscow, but a similar app named Yandex is available if you need a ride in a pinch.

How Many Days Do You Need in Moscow?

Moscow is the biggest city in all of Europe, and it is absolutely loaded with things to do. You could spend weeks in Moscow and still find new things to do. Of course, most travelers don’t have that kind of time to spend in one place!

I recommend spending no less than three full days in Moscow, and ideally closer to five or seven.

Moscow is very spread out, and it can take some time to get from one major point to another. There are also so many places that are nice to just sit back and relax, which is hard to do when you’re in a hurry trying to cram activities into just a few days.

If you only have a week to visit Russia, I’d advise spending all of the time in one city. If you decide to split your time between Moscow and St. Petersburg, I recommend not trying to squeeze in any day trips beyond those two cities.

When Is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Moscow?

There are two different ways to approach this question. Personally, I think the best time to visit Moscow is around Christmas and New Year’s Day. While the weather will be absolutely freezing, Moscow is a surreal winter wonderland in December and January.

We were in Moscow right before Christmas. While it was very cold, you can always bundle up. Exploring the Christmas markets and pop-up ice skating rinks throughout Moscow is one of my favorite memories from anywhere I’ve traveled, and I dream of going back to do it again.

If you aren’t fond of the cold, Moscow is beautiful in the summer. It tends to get pretty cold in the shoulder seasons, so if you want warm weather, you should plan to visit in the summer. Moscow actually gets pretty warm in July and August, and there are a bunch of fantastic places to soak up the sun within the city.

The best time to visit Moscow is either around Christmas or from late May to August.

Is Moscow Safe to Visit?

While Moscow is a truly wonderful city, there’s no denying that visiting Russia comes with risks. As the country is run by an infamous communist dictator, concerns about visiting are valid. While we didn’t experience any sort of threat or negative treatment during our time in Moscow, we visited in a peaceful time.

In our experience, Russia doesn’t seem to detain normal Americans or Westerners to use as pawns. As a regular person, as long as you don’t commit any crimes, there is a slim chance you will run into any issues. However, Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

Russia will not hesitate to enforce its laws against foreigners, and illegal behaviors will likely land you in a very compromising position.

To make matters worse, Russia has a bad reputation for gang violence. While the Russian mafia has very little interest in normal Western tourists, they won’t hesitate to pick a fight with anyone who ventures into their sphere of influence. If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

If you seek out illegal substances or activities, you could be a target of the mafia.

Finally, since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, things are all very different. Russia is currently at war, and there are battles raging within 8 hours of Moscow. While it is still relatively safe to visit, that could change at any time as the war with Ukraine continues.

Is Moscow Worth Visiting?

Without a doubt, Moscow is worth visiting. It is one of the most unique major cities we have ever visited, and we hope to make it back one day. The Russian Orthodox churches are stunning, the city’s history is unlike any other, and the food is to die for.

While many visitors prefer St. Petersburg to Moscow, I think Moscow deserves a lot of hype of its own. Moscow is the beating heart of Russian culture and history, and it’s a place I highly recommend checking out if you have the chance.

When is the best time to visit Moscow? | Weather, budget, events by month

When is the best time to visit Moscow

Discover when is the best time to visit Moscow. In this blog post, I will talk about weather, budget and other things to know to choose the best time when to go to Moscow for you. I cannot account the times when we went in Moscow. Here are the pros and the cons of each month taking all main criteria into account!

I will first describe the main criteria that will help you choose when to go to Moscow:

  • Climate in Moscow: temperatures and weather

Special events in Moscow

  • Budget and visa

Then I will talk about each season (go directly to this party if you already have an idea of the desired departure date):

  • Advantages and disadvantages month by month

The weather cannot be the only criterion to decide when is the best time to visit Moscow for you. Even if the temperatures drop low, Moscow in December is just magical! This is why I advise to take into account several criteria at the same time. Also remember that it takes at least a month to get the Russian visa.

When to go to Moscow: climate and weather

The seasons are well marked. The mid-season months are not necessarily the best for the weather. However, they are not necessarily to be avoided, because, as we will see later, Moscow is a city that changes all the time and the prices can be more attractive. For example, for a lot of people winter is the best time to visit Moscow.

Weather in Moscow. Moscow is inland, making the city “more protected” from changing weather. For example, the weather is much more changeable in St. Petersburg. On the other hand, the weather in Moscow is more and more scorching in summer, we can then easily reach 30 degrees (for the Russians, it’s already the heat wave).

Moscow temperatures

As soon as you think of Russia, you want to do “Brrrr”. Let’s prepare our down jackets! Indeed, the Russian climate is not the mildest on the planet. However, it all depends on the region, because the country is very large. Moscow is almost at the same latitude as Copenhagen. As Moscow is relatively far from the coast, there is a pronounced continental climate. It is hot in summer and cold in winter.

In addition, global warming is there. For several decades, annual average temperatures have always been recorded above the past. I suggest you look at the averages over the past five years to be as close as possible to reality:

Sunshine and precipitation

Sunshine. This is surprising, but there is more sunshine in Moscow than in Paris or even in Berlin: 1,731 hours in Moscow, compared to 1661 in Paris and 1626 in Berlin.

Duration of the day in winter. We had questions about the length of the day in winter. So, here are a few things. As in Europe, the shortest days are in December. In Moscow, at the end of December, the sun rises around 9 a.m. and sets around 4 p.m. Then the day gets bigger until the end of June, when the day is the longest.

Precipitation. There is more precipitation in Moscow than in Paris (705mm against 637mm).

When is the best time to visit Moscow: interesting events

Moscow is a city that moves a lot. It is even said that this city never sleeps. So there are a lot of events, forums, exhibitions, conferences. Here I’m going to talk about the main recurring events that punctuate the year and that may help you decide when to go to Moscow.

End of year celebrations in Moscow

December 31 rather than Christmas. The Russians are eagerly awaiting the holiday season. Here on December 31 is like Christmas with us. Religion, “opium of the people” according to Marx, and, above all, its official absence marked the country during the Soviet years. This then reinforced the celebration of December 31, while Orthodox Christmas is January 7.

Russian calendar. In addition, it should be known that the first week of January is a bank holiday. Many Russians therefore do not work during this period. Europe also greatly influences the habits of Muscovites. Consequently, the Christmas markets start in early December and, for some, continue until early February!

Fairytale atmosphere. If you are wondering when to go to Moscow and you love the holiday mood, then the end of December – early January, and even February, is for you! There are many things to do during this time: for example, Christmas markets, decorations, winter games, skating rinks. In 2016, Moscow opened the largest ice rink in Europe. In short, the city is doing a lot of entertainment during this period and the general atmosphere is at the top! However, everything comes at a cost. You can see more detail below in the article, month by month.

When to go to Moscow

Visit Moscow in May

May 1 and 9 are two big festivals in Russia. Both dates are known worldwide. May 9 in Russia is May 8 with us in France. The signature that marks the end of the Second World War. The shift day is explained by … the difference in time zone.

The May 9 holiday is a very important holiday for the Russians. The Soviet human losses amounted to millions. So there are many families who have been directly affected by the war. The first big parade was organized by Stalin on June 24, 1945 in Red Square in Moscow. Later each year the USSR and then Russia organized a parade on May 9. Here is the video of the first parade dating from 1945 in color, then the last – that of 2016.

A disadvantage of the beginning of May. For the planned events, Red Square will not be completely empty. There are always installations for May 9, but also rehearsals. So, to the question “when is the best time to visit Moscow”, I would not say that May is the best one. You can find out more in the article “Moscow in autumn” below.

Throughout the year, the Moscow City Hall organizes free events (festivals, small markets, concerts, etc.) in the Red Square and in the streets of the city center. For example, there are two major interesting events:

  • Festival of Lights “Around the World”: in 2019, it was from September 28 to October 4.
  • Anniversary of the city of Moscow always celebrated the first weekend of September.

When is the best time to visit Moscow: budget, price seasonality, visa

Most touristy periods. Many travelers come to Moscow from May to October. This is the period when we see the most tourists in Moscow. In addition, many are also those who come at the end of December and at the beginning of January for the New Year. The beginning of May and the first week of January are also strongly requested, in particular by the Russians (school holidays, public holidays).

Accommodation. Hotel rates therefore necessarily increase during these periods of the year. But they do not go so far as to triple. To give an idea, count at least 80 euros in the city center for a double room with breakfast. You can read more about the districts of Moscow in my article: Where to stay in Moscow?

Guides and tours. Also take into account that during these periods it will be more difficult to find a guide at the last moment. It’s best to do it 2-3 months in advance. There will be more waiting or difficulty obtaining tickets during the months of high tourist influx: late December, early January, May, June, July, August.

Visa for Russia. The cost of the visa does not change depending on the month of the year. On the other hand, the deadlines can be longer if you make the request for the high tourist season (from May to October). Allow about a month. Getting the Russian visa is not complicated, there is a procedure to follow.

In Russia, the seasons are divided as follows:

  • Fall: September, October, November.
  • Winter: December, January, February.
  • Spring: March, April, May.
  • Summer: June, July, August.

Discover Moscow in autumn: when is the best time to visit Moscow in autumn?

From the beginning of September, we feel that the temperatures begin to drop gradually, especially at night.

Moscow in September

More and more travelers are choosing the month of September to go to Moscow. Because it is not cold yet and there are fewer tourists than in summer. Prices drop slightly, but remain higher than in the lean months of the year. There is also the city’s birthday on the first weekend in September, but also the “Around the World” festival towards the end of the month.

Moscow in October

You are likely to come across the colors of autumn from the beginning of October. The accommodation prices are starting to drop gradually. There is less waiting in the places to visit. Temperatures are not very low: during the day they are generally around +6 degrees. On the other hand, the only negative point can be the cost of plane tickets, if you leave during the French school holidays.

Moscow in November

It’s one of the least calm! Temperatures drop and can approach zero during the day in mid-November. Hotel rates are low, there are few tourists, and therefore less waiting in museums. It’s easier to get tickets for the Kremlin Palace of Armor, which can be very difficult in the summer. Guides also have more availability. So why not go to Moscow in November?

Discover Moscow in winter: when is the best time to visit Moscow in winter?

Winter is a very nice time to go to Moscow, because the Christmas and New Year decorations are installed from the beginning of December and are not removed until the end of February. To learn more about the different activities in winter, read this article: What to do in Moscow in winter? If winter temperatures scare you, check out Moscow in the spring (see below).

Moscow in december

Normally, negative daytime temperatures set in, although the weather can vary significantly from year to year. In general, from mid-December the snow is durable. It is from December 20 that more and more travelers come to Moscow. December 31st is celebrated like Christmas in France. Accommodation rates are higher from mid-December. It’s also more complicated to find a guide at the last moment. Furthermore, as in Europe, the days of December are the shortest of the year. But if you want to mark New Years Day, you will have lots of memories!

Moscow in january

January is also a very festive month. The first week of January is a public holiday in Russia. Besides, it’s also a week of Russian school holidays. There are more people in the streets, museums and everywhere in the city. To find out more about this time of year (Christmas markets, itineraries, etc.), read: Christmas and New Years in Moscow . Prices remain high during this week, but drop from mid-January.

Moscow in February

It’s the second quietest month of the year. In February, winter clearly takes its ease. The temperatures are the lowest, it’s a real winter! The days are longer in February than in December. So we’re enjoying the day more, and with the snow it’s really nice, because the weather in Moscow in February is pretty sunny. Accommodation rates are at their lowest, and the decorations are still there. So, if you are looking for when to go to Moscow, if the cold does not scare you and you appreciate the snowy landscapes, why not consider the month of February?

Discover Moscow in spring: when is the best time to visit Moscow in spring?

Spring is a contrasting period between March, which is still quite cold, and May, when we really feel the arrival of summer.

Moscow in March

The ice and snow begin to melt around mid-March. Winter is coming in March, but spring is not quite there yet. It’s the third quietest month of the year. It is therefore possible to visit the city more quietly. Accommodation prices are low, guides are available. The weather in Moscow in March is milder than in February. In addition, the days are longer, so you can take many walks.

Moscow in April

It is only from mid-April that we begin to feel the beginnings of sunny days. The weather in Moscow in spring and April in particular is getting milder and colder: we can expect +7 during the day. In addition, there are not many travelers yet and we fear to enjoy the places more quietly, but we feel that the start of the tourist season is approaching. Accommodation rates are lower than in May.

Moscow in May

The early May holidays attract many travelers to Moscow. There are also many Russians who come to the capital on public holidays. It is therefore advisable to plan visits in advance to avoid queuing once there. Red Square can be closed or partially closed for rehearsals for the May 9 parade, the same day and one or two days after. More info in: Moscow in May: events, budget, what to do?

Discover Moscow in summer: when is the best time to visit Moscow in summer?

All summer months are great, if you take temperatures into account. The weather in Moscow in summer is quite pleasant. However, in recent years, there have been great heat peaks or heat waves in July (30 degrees during the day).

Moscow in June

From June, you can take long walks in the city’s parks, very numerous and much appreciated by the locals. Boat trips are more enjoyable from June. On the other hand, the prices of accommodation in Moscow are higher than in the lean months. There are also more tourists. Book your hotel, tours and activities in advance.

Moscow in july

July is the hottest month, but we’re not on +40. Moscow is a city inland and therefore there is little fresh air, if it is very hot. We can do lots of walks to discover the city. We have written several complete itineraries so as not to miss anything of Moscow in our special Moscow travel guide. It also contains tips to save time and enjoy the city off the beaten track, as there are so many tourists during this time of year.

Moscow in August

Temperatures are starting to drop gradually, but there are still so many people. In order to be sure of the choice of accommodation, I advise you to book in advance. The same goes for guided tours or entrance tickets to the Kremlin. It’s also a good time to discover the city differently by going to places that are less touristy and more frequented by locals.

When is the best time to go to Moscow? In summary!

The best time to discover Moscow depends on the criteria you want to favor: the weather, the budget, the tranquility of the visits, the special events to be experienced on site.

In summary:

  • The peak tourist season in Moscow begins in early May and ends in late September.
  • Late December and early January is the best time to experience the holiday mood, but it comes at a cost.
  • End of January, February, March, beginning of April, November are the quietest months of the year, when you can visit the city more calmly and on a reduced budget.

<h3>Sun Joe MJ800M Reel Mower</h3> <p>For seniors like my parents, I recommend the <a href="https://www.campingworld.com/sun-joe-mj1800m-18-inch-quad-wheel-5-position-razor-sharp-cutting-blade-silent-push-reel-mower--130756.html" rel="noopener">Sun Joe MJ800M Reel Mower</a>. This reel mower has a nice ergonomic grip with padding that makes controlling the mower super easy. The padded handle is designed to "give" a little when squeezing and pushing and overall requires less hand strength to operate.</p> <p>I also love that the Sun Joe MJ800M reel mower has four sturdy wheels that allow it to stand up straight. This means no bending over to pick the mower up. Plus, it stores similarly to a vacuum. This stops my elderly parents from leaning over to pick up a heavy mower and prevents them from trying to pick it up and store it on a hook on the wall.</p> <p><strong>Pros</strong></p> <ul> <li>Quad wheels allow it to stand up</li> <li>Comfortable hand grips</li> <li>Nice design</li> </ul> <p><strong>Cons</strong></p> <ul> <li>Heavier</li> <li>Plastic wheels</li> </ul> <p class="listicle-page__cta-button-shop"><a class="shop-btn" href="https://www.campingworld.com/sun-joe-mj1800m-18-inch-quad-wheel-5-position-razor-sharp-cutting-blade-silent-push-reel-mower--130756.html">Shop on Camping World</a></p> <p class="listicle-page__cta-button-shop"><a class="shop-btn" href="https://www.cabelas.com/shop/en/sun-joe-18-quad-wheel-5-position-silent-push-reel-mower">Shop on Cabela's</a></p> <p class="listicle-page__cta-button-shop"><a class="shop-btn" href="https://www.basspro.com/shop/en/sun-joe-18-quad-wheel-5-position-silent-push-reel-mower">Shop on Bass Pro Shops</a></p> <h2 class="">What to Look for When Buying a Reel Mower</h2> <p>A traditional rotary <a href="https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/lawn-mower-buying-guide/">lawn mower</a> uses a flat, spinning blade that <a href="https://www.familyhandyman.com/article/lawn-cutting-dos-and-donts/">cuts grass</a> the way a machete chops tall grass in a field. By contrast, a reel mower (sometimes called a cylinder mower) functions more like a pair of scissors. Blades of grass are caught and cut between the spinning reel (the curved metal that resembles a strand of DNA) and a fixed horizontal blade called the cutting bar. The resulting clean, precise snip makes for healthier, more attractive lawns. That's why reel mowers are frequently the machines of choice for golf courses.</p> <p>Reel mowers have a reputation for being "old school" and quite frankly, it is well deserved. But reel mowers have a ton of qualities besides nostalgia that give them relevance in the highly technological age we live in today. Reel mowers don't require any external power source, are inexpensive and require very little maintenance.</p> <p>"The advantages of a reel lawn mower include a superior quality of cut and the ability to mow at very low heights, such as golf course putting greens," says Bob Mann, Senior Director of Technical & Regulatory Affairs at the <a href="https://www.landscapeprofessionals.org/" rel="noopener">National Association of Landscape Professionals</a>. "The chief disadvantage is that they are very difficult to maintain, requiring daily adjustments in order to cut correctly and require highly specialized and very expensive sharpening equipment making their use cost prohibitive."</p> <p>Here are some things you should look for when making a reel mower purchase:</p> <ul> <li><strong>Cutting width: </strong>When it comes to how much time you spend mowing your grass, cutting width is a huge part of the equation. Wider is better to reduce cutting time and make fewer passes. With reel mowers, cutting width also means more resistance and a more difficult push.</li> <li><strong>Cutting height: </strong>Reel mowers are great for warm-season grasses that require more frequent cutting to keep them short. Look for a reel mower with a nice cutting height range, down to about an inch or so of height.</li> <li><strong>Weight: </strong>Weight is truly a double-edged sword with reel lawn mowers. Best Reel Mower for Seniors

Sun joe mj800m reel mower.

For seniors like my parents, I recommend the Sun Joe MJ800M Reel Mower . This reel mower has a nice ergonomic grip with padding that makes controlling the mower super easy. The padded handle is designed to "give" a little when squeezing and pushing and overall requires less hand strength to operate.

I also love that the Sun Joe MJ800M reel mower has four sturdy wheels that allow it to stand up straight. This means no bending over to pick the mower up. Plus, it stores similarly to a vacuum. This stops my elderly parents from leaning over to pick up a heavy mower and prevents them from trying to pick it up and store it on a hook on the wall.

  • Quad wheels allow it to stand up
  • Comfortable hand grips
  • Nice design
  • Plastic wheels

What to Look for When Buying a Reel Mower

A traditional rotary lawn mower uses a flat, spinning blade that cuts grass the way a machete chops tall grass in a field. That's why reel mowers are frequently the machines of choice for golf courses.

Reel mowers have a reputation for being "old school" and quite frankly, it is well deserved. But reel mowers have a ton of qualities besides nostalgia that give them relevance in the highly technological age we live in today. Reel mowers don't require any external power source, are inexpensive and require very little maintenance.

"The advantages of a reel lawn mower include a superior quality of cut and the ability to mow at very low heights, such as golf course putting greens," says Bob Mann, Senior Director of Technical & Regulatory Affairs at the National Association of Landscape Professionals . "The chief disadvantage is that they are very difficult to maintain, requiring daily adjustments in order to cut correctly and require highly specialized and very expensive sharpening equipment making their use cost prohibitive."

Here are some things you should look for when making a reel mower purchase:

  • Cutting width: When it comes to how much time you spend mowing your grass, cutting width is a huge part of the equation. Wider is better to reduce cutting time and make fewer passes. With reel mowers, cutting width also means more resistance and a more difficult push.
  • Cutting height: Reel mowers are great for warm-season grasses that require more frequent cutting to keep them short. Look for a reel mower with a nice cutting height range, down to about an inch or so of height.
  • Weight: Weight is truly a double-edged sword with reel lawn mowers. It makes the mowing experience heavier when you have more weight but also helps the mower make it over bumps in the grass. I prefer mowers with a bit of weight.
  • Usability: Having a comfortable, easy-to-push reel mower is an absolute must. Once you get started using a reel mower, it can be a super pleasant and satisfying experience if the mower has the right features.
