Best time to visit.
Greece generally has a mild, Mediterranean climate, with July and August being the busiest months for tourism. With warm weather and plentiful sunshine, this is a great time for visiting the islands, swimming in the sea and lazing on the beach. Summers are generally hot and dry, with daytime temperatures rising to 30°-38°C (85°-100°F).
By mid-September, temperatures begin to fall and crowds thin, but it can still be hot. The weather remains generally calm and balmy well into October. If you can't get to Greece in the spring, and beaches are not your primary goal, this is a fine time to visit. By late October, ferry service and flights are cutting back and most facilities on the islands begin to close for the winter. But the cooler atmosphere makes Athens and the mainland all the more pleasant.

Culture and customs
Greece’s culture is very much influenced by its ancient past. The hallmarks of Western medicine, philosophy, drama and government can all be attributed to the mighty ancient Greek civilization – which is an incredible source of national pride. Traditional music and dance are still valued and used to commemorate celebrations throughout the year. The circle dance, for instance, dates to the Byzantine period. Even contemporary cuisine has its roots in ancient tradition.
Greeks place a high amount of value on ‘kefi’, which loosely translates to joy or passion. Life is meant to be lived to the fullest. For this reason, meals are leisurely and social gatherings are frequent, typically involving drinking, dancing and lively discussion. Common Greek customs, like smashing plates and dancing with a glass of water on your head, are considered expressions of kefi.
With more than 90% of the population being Greek Orthodox, religion plays an important part in everyday life. Religious festivals and ceremonies are commonplace, both in the mainland cities and small rural villages. Christmas and Easter are particularly important dates on the calendar, although religious celebrations are not limited to these times as there are daily, weekly and annual rites and rituals performed all throughout Greece’s mainland and islands.
Food and drink
Greek cuisine favours simplicity and relies primarily on fresh local produce. Think vegetables, beans, nuts and grains; grilled meats and fresh fish; parsley, garlic, dill and mint; and punchy cheeses such as feta, kefalotyri and halloumi. Drinks-wise, locals will savour a Greek coffee at a kafeneio (coffeehouse) or glass of anise-flavoured ouzo (diluted with water) at an ouzeri – along with a couple of mezedhes (appetizers) – for hours. There’s also tsipouru (fermented distilled grape skins), raki (a tsipouru from Crete) and retsina (white wine flavoured with pine resin).

Geography and environment
Sharing land borders with Albania , Bulgaria , Turkey and Macedonia , Greece is located in Southern Europe and is surrounded by the Ionian, Mediterranean and Aegean Sea. Consisting of the mainland peninsula and an archipelago of more than 3000 islands, Greece is typically mountainous, containing peaks, karsts and canyons all over. Despite the mountainous topography, there is much arable land in Greece with small-scale farms successfully producing olives, peaches, melons, grapes, tomatoes and grain for export and local use.
Greece’s highest peak, Mount Olympus, is famed for being the dwelling place of the 12 ancient gods in Greek mythology. The islands are mostly uninhabited and are formed in small chains (called archipelagos) within the Aegean Sea. Santorini , Mykonos and Corfu are among the more popular islands with tourists, though Crete and Evia are the largest islands.
History and government
Early history.
The early history of Greece is among the world’s most fascinating, and like the other ancient civilizations of Egypt and Rome, Greece has many monuments still standing after centuries. The Greeks have been both the conquerors and the conquered, withstood the Plague and other natural disasters, and birthed some of the greatest literature, scientific developments, mathematical formulas and thought movements.
Recent history
In 1821, the Greeks fought against Ottoman rule during the Greek War of Independence, which resulted in Greece being recognized as an autonomous region in 1828. This was a time of great upheaval for the Greek people, with political assassinations, battles and plundering. After autonomy was granted, many years of change followed, with continued war and confrontation alongside intermittent periods of relative peace. The two World Wars had a profound effect on Greece, with many battles fought in Greece during the early 1940s (during the Axis occupation). Athens was liberated from this occupation in 1944 and the Greek government was restored. Greece joined the United Nations (as a founding member) in 1945 and NATO in 1952. During this time, many Greeks started moving to other parts of the world in a mass wave of widespread migration. The USA , Australia and Europe were popular destinations in this move, which saw hundreds of thousands of Greeks immigrate to other lands. In 2004, Athens successfully hosted the Summer Olympics once again. Yet more recently, Greece has come under the shadow of the European debt crisis which has crippled the economy. Despite this, the spirit of the Greek people endures as it has for eons.

10. Sail around Greece
You know those moments in life when you wonder, is this even real? On a sailing trip in Greece’s Cyclades Islands, that happens a lot. Learn more about our sailing tour in Greece .
From public markets and designer boutiques to European chain stores, Greece has every aspect of retail cornered.
If you are in the market for traditional Greek handicrafts, consider supporting the local economy by purchasing goods in the region that produces them. This includes silver from Ioannina; ceramics from Sifnos and Skopelos; and embroidery and lace from Crete, the Ionian Islands, Rhodes and Skiros.
Shopping hours vary throughout Greece. Stores in large cities and tourist areas are typically open from 9 am to 9 pm, while shops in other areas close around 2 or 3 pm and reopen between 6 and 9 pm three days a week (Tuesday, Thursday and Friday). Most stores are closed on Sundays.
Things to buy in Greece
1. komboloi (worry beads).
These stress-relieving resin beads are meant to be turned through your fingers as you muse over life. With roots deep in ancient Greek cultural tradition, they make a great souvenir for friends wanting a slice of authentic Greece.
2. Botanical skincare
Greece is home to many brands of premium, organic skincare. Stock up on luxurious olive oil soap or enriching yogurt-based moisturizers before you head home.
Travel safely and ward off evil by attaching a Mati (an ‘Evil Eye’) to your backpack. They’re cheap, available almost everywhere in Greece and are a great reminder of your travels in the Aegean.
4. Jewellery
Whether you prefer gold, silver, amber resin or colourful beads, Greece has a huge variety of jewellery on offer. Prices are typically lower than in many other parts of the world, so it’s likely you’ll be able to snap up a few bargains.
Festivals and events in Greece
The Greeks have been partying since the dawn of Western civilization. Take Epicurus – he dedicated his life to seeking out pleasure, creating a philosophy now known as Epicureanism. As you travel through Greece you’ll encounter religious celebrations – Greek Orthodox is the main player here – that span the nation, as well as smaller celebrations that are regional affairs or isolated to particular islands. Expect food, drink, dancing and music, and plenty of throwbacks to the ancient Greeks. The only Greek tragedy is that you can’t fit every festival in.

When is the best time to visit Greece?
Greece is best experienced outside of winter for most travellers. The best time of year depends on what kind of holiday you’re after – whether you’re more interested in soaking up the island sun or ancient history.
Is it safe to visit Greece?
Greece has historically been a very safe place to visit though petty crime, like pickpocketing, can be an issue in well-touristed areas. Travellers should remain alert when visiting crowded places and keep an eye on their belongings.
Do you need a visa for Greece?
Greece is a member of the Schengen Convention, which means that if you travel to an EU member country or countries, like Greece, for a total of less than 90 days, a visa is not required. Citizens of Australia, New Zealand, Canada, the US, the UK and other member countries of the EU and Schengen area are included under this arrangement. Other countries do require a visa to visit Greece.
Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.
Is tipping customary in Greece?
There is not a strong tradition of tipping in Greece, particularly among the locals, but it’s become expected that tourists leave small tips while travelling through the country.
What is the internet access like in Greece?
You’ll be able to find wi-fi at most hotels, cafes, bars and restaurants throughout the well-touristed areas of Greece. Alternatively, you can pick up a local SIM card with a data package for continued access.
Can I use my cell phone in Greece?
If you wish to use your cell phone while in Greece and you are not from an EU country, you’ll need to pick up a local SIM card or activate global roaming before you leave home.
What are the toilets like in Greece?
Flushable, Western-style toilets are the norm in Greece. You may need to pay a small fee to use public toilets in some areas. Keep in mind that the Greek plumbing system isn’t the greatest and you may be asked to put toilet paper in the bin rather than flushing it.
What will it cost for a...?
Greece’s unit of currency is the euro:
- A takeaway souvlaki or gyros = EUR € 3-6
- Bottle of wine from the supermarket = EUR € 5–8
- Meal in a local cafe = EUR € 15
- Meal in a nice restaurant = EUR € 20+
- Ticket for the Acropolis (including other ancient sites) = EUR € 10-20
- Domestic beer (Mythos or similar) at local bar = EUR €3-4.50
- Espresso coffee = EUR €1.50
Can I drink the water in Greece?
Drinking the water in Athens and Thessaloniki is safe unless otherwise marked. On the islands, however, the water may not be suitable to drink.
For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water instead.
Are credit cards widely accepted in Greece?
Credit cards are widely accepted in Greece , particularly in the tourist areas. It’s actually a legal requirement, as a response to the financial crisis, that working Greek citizens aged below 65 have a credit card so most hotels, shops, cafes and restaurants should offer the option of paying by credit card.
It’s still worth having some euros on hand, if only to tip the bartender at your favourite island bar and guarantee quick service all evening.
What is ATM access like in Greece?

What is the weather like in Greece?

Is Greece safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?
Greece is one of the most popular LGBTQIA+ holiday destinations in the world, with a long history of same-sex relationships dating back to Sappho, the Greek poet, whose home island of Lesvos has become a pilgrimage site for lesbians. Though same-sex marriage is not legal, marriages performed in the EU have been recognized since 2018 and discrimination against sexual orientation or gender identity is banned by law.
For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting Equaldex or ILGA before you travel.
If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.
Is Greece accessible for travellers with disabilities?
Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.
Though access to sights and hotels has improved in Athens over recent years, Greece is a difficult destination for travellers with disabilities. It’s a hilly, rocky place covered in cobblestones, particularly on the islands, and the economic situation has meant that there are minimal public funds to improve the situation.
If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.
What should I wear in Greece?
What to pack for Greece will depend on where you're going and what time of year you decide to visit. Comfortable walking shoes are essential all year round, as is a jumper in case a cool wind blows.
If you visit in summer, you’ll need light, breathable clothing, sunglasses, a hat, swimwear and sandals.
If you’re heading to the mountains on the mainland, it’s best to be prepared for everything as the weather can change quickly.
What are some common phrases to learn before travelling to Greece?
Greek is a very difficult language to learn. However, it's easy enough to master a couple of common words such as 'hello' (yah-soo) and 'please' (para-kah-LOE). Not only will this help you communicate with the locals, but it'll allow you to form a deeper connection to the places you're visiting and the people you meet along the way.
How many islands are there in Greece?
There are roughly 6,000 islands and islets in Greece, of which only about 200 are populated. Each island offers spectacular views of the surrounding seas, golden beaches to lie out on, and ancient old towns full of fascinating sites.
How will I travel around Greece?
Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are heaps more fun.
Depending on which trip you're on while in Greece, you may find yourself travelling by:

The surrounding seas of the Aegean , Ionian and Mediterranean are dotted with Greece’s paradise islands, of which there are 227 inhabited islands. Holidays to the Greek Islands are always popular, with Crete, Santorini, Lesbos and Mykonos among the best-known islands, although there are hundreds of little-known islands to discover on a tour of Greece . Furthermore, the romantic charm of these islands, as portrayed in the blockbuster movie Mamma Mia makes a honeymoon to Greece a popular choice among newlyweds. The only question is which Greek Island to visit!
If you’d rather stick to the mainland, you’ll find plenty of unspoilt beaches along the whooping 16,000 kilometres of coastline. Although Greece’s gorgeous Mediterranean climate is well-suited for an all-inclusive beach vacation, the interior of the country is filled with picturesque mountain scenery, perfect for more active pursuits. In fact, 80% of Greece is mountainous, where you’ll find the famous Mount Olympus , home of the Greek gods.
In the ancient capital of Athens , you’ll find bucket-list sights such as the Acropolis , the Parthenon and the Theatre of Dionysus , where you can walk in the footsteps of legendary Athenians such as Plato , Pericles and Aristotle.
There are infinite things to see and do in Greece ; it could take a lifetime to truly experience the richness of this ancient civilization. Endless cultural gems, warm hospitality and stunning natural scenery make travel to Greece eternally popular. From island-hopping in the Aegean to consulting the mysterious Oracle in Delphi or exploring the magical monasteries of Meteora , the possibilities are endless on a trip to Greece.
The best time to travel to Greece for a beach vacation is during the summer months when you can enjoy long, sunny days and balmy evenings. Travelling to Greece for sightseeing is recommended in the spring and autumn , before the crowds of summer and when the temperatures are better suited to exploring the country’s cultural delights.
History of Greece
The history of Greece is tightly bound with the history of Western civilization as a whole. Ancient Greece is credited with the creation of democracy, mathematics and the Olympic Games and stories of this mighty civilization have captured our imaginations for centuries.
The Golden Age of Ancient Greece took place around the 5th and 4th centuries BC . During this important period, Greece was divided into city-states, known as polis, the most famous of which were Athens, Sparta, Delphi and Thebes , among others. Each polis had its own laws, languages, customs and governments and there were often conflicts and struggles between the states for domination of Greece , known as Hellas at the time. The legacy of this period can be seen in some of the country’s most inspiring monuments, such as the Parthenon in Athens , the Sanctuary of Delphi and the ruins of Olympia . A vacation to Greece is incomplete without visiting at least a few of the ancient sites from this Golden Age.
Following the Macedonian takeover and death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC , Greece soon came under the control of the ever-growing Roman Empire . The days of the organised polis were over, but self-governance was still allowed by the Romans , although there was strict supervision. Nevertheless, the Romans admired the intricacies of Greek culture and the customs and language of Greece travelled far and wide across Europe thanks to the Roman Empire. The Roman Agora and Hadrian’s Library in Athens were both constructed during this era, and are must-see sights on a tour of Greece.
After the split of the Roman Empire , Greece became part of the Byzantine Empire for several centuries. You’ll find a number of Byzantine Churches throughout Greece , recognisable by their domed roofs. In 1453 the Fall of Constantinople marked the end of the Byzantine Empire and Greece came under the control of the Ottomans. It was not until 1821 that Greece declared its independence, although struggles and conflicts over territory continued for many years.
In the 20th-century, Germany occupied Greece during the Second World War and in 1944 a complicated and violent civil war took hold of the country. Finally, in 1975 , Greece became a democracy once more and it later joined the European Union in 1981.
Nature in Greece
Greece is a perfect travel destination. As well as legendary historical sites and vibrant national culture, Greece is also filled with unmissable natural wonders. On a trip to Greece , you’ll find pristine beaches, ancient caves, canyons, lush forests, beautiful waterfalls, rugged mountain ranges, endless vineyards, and of course, plenty of olive groves!
From the snow-capped mountains of the north to the white-sand beaches of the Cyclades Islands , Greece offers a cornucopia of natural beauty and countless opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. Some of the most breathtaking natural wonders to explore on a Greece vacation include the magical underground lake in the Cave of Melissani on the island of Kefalonia, the giant rock formations and monasteries of Meteora in central Greece and the azure Blue Caves of Zakynthos.
Mount Olympus National Park , home to the highest peak in the country, is a haven for walkers with plenty of hiking routes, waterfalls and caves to explore. If your tour of Greece takes you to the historic island of Crete , be sure to explore Samaria Gorge National Park . A biosphere reserve, this magical 16-kilometre long gorge was carved out by a small river and offers all kinds of exciting walking and climbing routes along its narrow pathways and dramatic cliff faces.
Greece is also home to some of the most diverse wildlife in Europe, including brown bears, wildcats, jackals and wolves, not forgetting the sea turtles and dolphins you’ll find around the shores of the Greek Islands.
Greek Culture
With thousands of years of history, Greek culture is rich and vibrant, filled with traditions, music, folklore, delicious food and socialising. In fact, socialising is a pillar of modern Greek culture, which you can observe on the terraces of any cafe, where groups of all ages take time out of their days to catch up over coffee or a refreshing glass of ouzo , the famous Greek aperitif.
Greek culture comes to life at the dining table and the timeless trinity of feta cheese, olives and olive oil are sure to leave your taste buds enlivened. Washed down with a generous glass of local wine, Greek cuisine is an important part of Greek culture and certainly a highlight of any trip to Greece.
Of all the elements of Greek culture, language is perhaps the most important. Known for its unique alphabet, the Greek heard today is directly derived from Ancient Greek , something the locals are fiercely proud of as it has endured for millennia.
If you travel to Greece you might be fortunate enough to experience some of the vibrant cultural festivals that are scattered across the annual calendar. Most festivals are closely linked to Greek Orthodox traditions , but you’ll find different regional celebrations, dances and folk music throughout Greece.
On a vacation to Greece , you’ll appreciate the laid-back way of life. You’ll likely find that life moves at a slower pace, especially in the Greek Islands , giving you plenty of time to enjoy the delights of this beautiful country.
Travel to Greece , the Cradle of Western Civilization, where nature, culture and history combine to create a one-of-a-kind destination. From the mysterious ruins of Knossos in Crete to the windmills of Santorini , there are endless treasures to explore on a trip to Greece.

In southeastern Europe, the idyllic islands of Greece sit amidst the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, encompassing the Aegean Sea. As the cradle of ancient civilization, Greece is home to many ancient ruins like the Acropolis of Athens in the heart of Ancient Greece. In the southern part of the Aegean Sea, Crete is the largest of the Greek islands and home to the main Bronze Age archaeological site, the Palace of Knossos, the home of the Minotaur. In the northern part of the Aegean Sea, Mykonos offers sun-kissed, sandy beaches, beach clubs and vibrant nightlife. South of Mykonos, the white-washed buildings of Santorini are perched atop cliffs that sit gracefully against the azure skies, offering one-of-a-kind views. Greece is a living canvas of awe-inspiring history and natural splendor. Embark on a journey through both the ancient wonders and contemporary delights, and taste the country's rich culinary heritage with flavorful Mediterranean dishes.

Whether you’re looking for a place to explore history, dive into local culture, or relax on the shore, Greece offers tempting options for travelers. On our guided tours to Greece, you’ll find itineraries for travelers of all types, making it easy to find the one that fits your interests.
- Meteora, Athens, or Delphi. Greece is home to some of the most important historical sites in the world, including the Acropolis, the Parthenon, and the Temple of Zeus. These sites offer a glimpse into the ancient world and its rich culture. If you’re a history buff, our Athens & Ancient Greece tour is right up your alley.
- The Greek Islands or Pelion. If sunshine and coastlines are more your style, island-hopping in the Aegean Sea is a good option for you. Take two weeks to explore all they have to offer on our The Greek Islands: Mykonos, Santorini & Crete tour .
- Santorini, Crete, or Athens. Greece is a foodie’s paradise, with a rich culinary tradition that spans thousands of years. From the islands’ fresh seafood to the mainland’s hearty stews, there’s something delicious for everyone to enjoy.
- Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini. For first-time visitors and those who only have a week to get away, our shorter Greece tours are a great way to go. Our A Week in Greece: Athens, Mykonos & Santorini tour introduces you to the highlights of each location—and leaves you with vacation days to spare.
A Greek Islands tour has something for every type of traveler—beach lovers, foodies, hikers, and history buffs. Here are five of the best islands to visit in Greece:
- Mykonos. A favorite of jet setters, Mykonos has all of the ingredients for a good time: gorgeous beaches, bohemian-chic restaurants, and lots of options for nightlife and entertainment.
- Santorini. The beaches here are famous not for their golden sand, but for their black-and-red-rock sand. Head to the hilltop town of Oia at sunset for the quintessential Santorini experience.
- Paxos. If you’re a beach lover, Paxos has some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. The sand is soft and white, and the water is clear, making it perfect for snorkeling or scuba diving.
- Naxos. Looking for stunning beaches, lush vegetation, and traditional villages? Naxos offers it all. The village of Apiranthos is known for its whitewashed houses and its cobbled streets.
- Crete. The largest of the Greek Islands, Crete offers beautiful beaches, scenic hikes, and interesting history. It’s also considered the culinary hub of the islands.

There’s no question about it: Greece always makes a great getaway. In recent years, especially, it’s become a clear traveler favorite. Summer is the most popular time for visitors, and the islands tend to become crowded with sun-seeking adventurers then.
If you have the flexibility to travel at other times of the year, the best time to visit Greece is in the off-season. When temperatures are cooler, you’ll be able to immerse yourself in the true essence of the country. Check out one of our Greece guided tours, A Week in Ancient Greece: Athens, Delphi & Olympia , which is specifically designed to make the most of the cooler months.
Certain islands aren’t accessible during the winter, but this time of year is excellent for visiting the mainland. Hop between Mykonos and Santorini in the fall and spring for the ultimate Greek getaway.
In a land of rich history, rugged ruins, and remarkable beauty, the must-see destinations on our trips to Greece focus heavily on ancient attractions. But it’s not all about history. The towns, cities, and islands where you’ll find the top attractions offer exciting venues to explore, both old and new.
- The Acropolis. One of the most important archaeological sites in the world and a masterpiece of classical Greek architecture, the Acropolis is home to some of the most iconic landmarks in Greece, including the Parthenon, the Erechtheion, and the Temple of Athena Nike. Its museum houses more than 3,000 artifacts, from sculptures to jewelry, and offers stunning views of the Acropolis and the city of Athens.
- Ancient Agora. Originally the center of political, social, and religious life in Athens, this site was home to significant buildings, including temples, stoas, and law courts (the trial of Socrates took place here). Today, it’s a popular tourist destination featuring museums, archaeological sites, shops, and restaurants.
- Temple of Olympian Zeus. One of the largest temples in the ancient world, this colossal temple in Athens is dedicated to Zeus. While only 15 of the original 104 marble columns remain standing, the ruins are among the most impressive in Greece.
- Panathenaic Stadium. The site of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896 and the 2004 Summer Olympics, this ancient stadium in Athens, made entirely of marble, was built in the fourth century B.C. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is also a popular venue for concerts and other events.
- Acropolis of Lindos. Set on a high cliff overlooking the Aegean Sea on the island of Rhodes, the Acropolis of Lindos is a beautiful and well-preserved archaeological site featuring a number of temples and other ruins.
- Palace of Knossos. This ancient palace located on Crete, with its amazing frescoes and artifacts from the Minoan civilization, is one of the most important archaeological sites in Greece.
- Samariá Gorge. A national park located on the island of Crete, Samariá Gorge is one of the longest gorges in Europe and a popular destination for hiking and camping.
- Meteora monasteries. This group of monasteries, located in central Greece, is built on top of towering sandstone pillars and offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside.
- Santorini. The island of Santorini is one of the most popular destinations on trips to Greece. It is known for its stunning caldera, whitewashed buildings, and blue-domed churches.

- Visiting museums and galleries. Greece’s museums and galleries are a testament to the country’s rich history and culture. You’ll find artifacts from Greece’s most important archaeological digs in the Acropolis Museum and the National Archaeological Museum.

Greece has typical Mediterranean weather—usually mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. However, the weather can vary greatly depending on the region and time of year, so checking the forecast before traveling on any of our Greece tour packages is essential.
- Respect for traditions. Greeks are very proud of their culture and history, so it is important to be respectful of their traditions. This includes dressing appropriately for visits to religious sites.
- Greeting people. It is customary to greet people with a handshake and a kiss on the cheek. Of course, you can choose what feels comfortable for you.
- Dining. While in some countries it is considered rude to not finish your meal, in Greece it is considered polite to leave some food on your plate at the end of a meal.
- Tipping. It is customary to tip in Greece, but the amount is up to you. A tip of 10–15% is generally considered acceptable.
- Greek Orthodox Church holidays and festivals. Pay attention to the calendar because many businesses are closed on these days.
Greek food is famous for its use of fresh, seasonal ingredients, its simple yet flavorful cooking methods, and its emphasis on healthy eating. Our trips to Greece are guaranteed to be full of meals featuring fresh, delicious fruits and vegetables. Some typical ingredients in Greek cuisine include olive oil and feta cheese, as well as grilled fish and meat. Some of the most popular dishes to try on Greece trips include:
- Souvlaki. A grilled skewer of meat, usually lamb or pork, served with pita bread, tomatoes, onions, and tzatziki.
- Gyros. This is a similar dish to souvlaki, but the meat in gyros is cooked on a vertical rotisserie. You can find this popular street food all over the country.
- Moussaka. A traditional Greek baked dish made with layers of eggplant, ground beef, béchamel sauce, and feta cheese.
- Spanakopita. Served as an appetizer or main course, this savory pie is created with fresh spinach and feta cheese enclosed in crispy phyllo dough. Spanakopita is best enjoyed warm.
- Tzatziki. On a hot day, this refreshing dip made from yogurt, cucumbers, garlic, and herbs hits the spot. Enjoy it served with pita bread, vegetables, or meats.
- Olives. Olives are grown in many parts of Greece, but the Peloponnese region is the largest producer. The dark purple Kalamata olive, famous for its rich flavor, is one of the most well-known varieties of Greek olives.
- Feta cheese. This traditional Greek cheese—salty, tangy, and crumbly—has been produced for centuries. Often used in salads, dips, and sauces, feta makes a delicious snack or appetizer.

We recommend packing light for your trip to Greece. One suitcase and one carry-on per person is a good guideline to follow; you should feel comfortable managing your baggage at the airport. If you’re visiting the islands, you’ll likely have to bring your bag with you on the ferry, so make sure you’re comfortable carrying it. After you’ve booked one of our Greece tour packages, we’ll give you information about how to prepare for your particular trip and even share a packing list in our mobile app.
- Sun protection. For all our trips, especially during the summer months in Greece, we recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
- Layers. We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
- Comfortable walking shoes. Since you’ll be exploring new destinations with local guides, a comfortable pair of walking shoes is essential to have with you. Those walking shoes will come in handy while exploring the rugged ruins of Ancient Greece or the volcanic shores of Santorini.
- Dressier attire. If you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance on our trips to Greece, you may want to pack dressier attire.
- Full-coverage layers for religious sites. On our Greece tours, it is preferable not to visit churches, temples, or other religious sites with bare legs or shoulders, and staff at these sites may deny entrance on this basis.
- A small day bag. Many churches and museums will not allow you to bring in large backpacks for security purposes—you’ll need to check them at the door. However, you can wear a small day bag on your front, like a cross-body travel bag or stylish mini backpack.
- An RFID money belt or wallet. Greece’s city streets can get busy, and like in any country with many tourists, you’ll want to be wary of pickpockets. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) can protect your credit card info from electronic theft, and a money belt will conceal your cash without ruining your outfit.
Once you’ve reserved one of our tour packages to Greece, we’ll send you detailed information about what to bring with you. Don’t forget to download the Go Ahead app before you take off, so you’ll have all the info you need about your trip right in your pocket.

Iconic Greece & the Cyclades
With some of Europe’s oldest civilizations developing in this country, impressive monuments still stand as proof of the empires that once called the ancient Panhellenic capital home. While the mainland’s architecture will take you on a trip through time, the Cyclades of Mykonos and Santorini will inspire you to cherish the simpler things in life. Endless blue seas, whitewashed buildings at dramatic angles and pink skies play backdrop to the distinctive cultural heritage and fascinating local traditions of a millennia-old and multifaceted civilization. Local favourites of fresh seafood, strong Ouzo liquor, sun-filled tomatoes, perfectly ripe olives and organic feta cheese will quickly become yours, too.

Our happy travellers rave about Greece
Every day was amazing.
Wow, everything was great. Every day was amazing and an adventure. The hotels were beautiful and the meals were fantastic. The tours were fantastic. So well-organized, so glad we did it. We loved Caroline (our Group Guru) and Harris (our National Guide in Greece). Fantastic trip! You see so much. A great vacation. Caroline made sure we were all ready and kept us secure. Loved all the tours, bus, ferry and flights. I wouldn’t change a thing. We were thrilled with the service, the excursions, and food.
Highlights for me include Olympia, lunches, Acropolis, Santorini, and Mykonos. Nice to have rest and leisure time in Mykonos and a glass of wine at the pool. I also always had fun times on the bus!
Fantastic & professional
Everyone was very friendly and easy to talk to. Joe Ennis (our guru) was absolutely fantastic and professional. Thank you so much! The food was great!! The sites we saw were right up my alley. I think just getting to know the people in the group was my favourite. I am not usually the most outgoing guy, but everyone was great.
Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly
The highlights were seeing so much of Greece and the fabulous food and wine! Our Group Guru, Joe, added humour, a sense of security and professionalism to our tour. He was very sensitive to all of our needs and wants, and always made sure we were taken care of! Our National Guide was extremely knowledgeable and friendly, it was a pleasure to have her as our guide!
Impressed with the staff
We are again most impressed with the Approach office staff as they were always so eager to answer our pre-tour questions and sent us very useful gifts. Hats off to you guys!

Good to know
Faqs - booking greece flights, does toronto pearson offer any facilities for nursing mothers.
Yes. At Toronto Pearson, nursing mothers can take advantage of the Mamava freestanding lactation suites that are located both airside and landside in the airport. These freestanding units provide the necessary amenities for a nursing mother, including enough space for luggage or small children.
Does either Toronto Airport offer exclusive lounges where I can wait for my flight to Greece, even if I am flying on an economy ticket?
Yes. At Toronto Pearson, you can pay at the door to access the Plaza Premium Lounge, either in Terminal 1 or Terminal 3. If you are flying on Air Canada, you can buy a lounge pass to the Air Canada Maple Leaf Lounge in T1. If you are flying American Airlines, you can pay to access the American Airlines Admirals Club in T3.
Can I find a direct flight from Toronto to Athens?
Yes. Air Canada, Lufthansa, and Agean Airlines all offer non-stop flights from Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to Athens, where you will land at the Athens International Airport (ATH). You can also find a number of one-stop flights to Athens on airlines such as Air Transat, Air Canada, SWISS, Air France, Delta, British Airways, and others.
What city should I fly into if I am visiting Crete?
Crete has two major international airports, The Heraklion Airport (HER) and the Chania International Airport (CHQ). CHQ tends to be the more convenient airport if you are visiting Western Crete. HER is the more popular airport, the second largest in Greece; therefore, it is likely that you will have more ticket options landing at HER. However, it is often the case that you can find cheaper tickets to CHQ.

How does KAYAK's flight Price Forecast tool help me choose the right time to buy my flight ticket from Toronto to Greece?
KAYAK’s flight Price Forecast tool uses historical data to determine whether the price for a flight to Greece from Toronto is likely to change within 7 days, so travelers know whether to wait or book now.
What is the Hacker Fare option on flights from Toronto to Greece?
Hacker Fares allow you to combine one-way tickets in order to save you money over a traditional round-trip ticket. You could then fly to Greece with an airline and back to Toronto with another airline.
What is KAYAK's "flexible dates" feature and why should I care when looking for a flight from Toronto to Greece?
Sometimes travel dates aren't set in stone. If your preferred travel dates have some wiggle room, flexible dates will show you all the options when flying to Greece from Toronto up to 3 days before/after your preferred dates. You can then pick the flights that suit you best.
Top tips for finding cheap flights to Greece
- Morning departure is around 62% more expensive than an evening flight, on average*.
- When you book your flight through KAYAK from Toronto to Greece, you will most likely depart from the Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), Toronto's primary international airport. However, be on the lookout for cheap tickets that might depart from Toronto’s smaller airport, the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport (YTZ).
- If you want to relax your muscles before your long flight to Greece, you can treat yourself to a massage in one of the retail spa locations at Toronto Pearson (YYZ). In Terminal 3, you'll find three different Be Relax Spa locations and one Wellbeing Spa.
- When you are flying from Toronto to Corfu, you'll be landing at the Corfu International Airport (CFU). You can find significantly cheaper tickets through KAYAK from Toronto to Corfu if you choose a flight that has two stops and involves a self-transfer. This means that when you change airlines during a stop on your flight, you will have to collect your baggage and check in again for the next leg of your journey.
- If you are interested in exploring northern Greece, consider flying into the city of Thessaloniki. You will be landing at the Thessaloniki Airport Makedonia (SKG). When you are flying from Toronto to SKG, you can sometimes find the cheapest flights departing from the Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport YTZ.
- If you want to enjoy the sunny beaches, dazzling nightlife, and historic windmills on the Greek island Mykonos, you can fly from Toronto into the Mykonos International Airport (JMK). Air France, Air Transat, Lufthansa, and SWISS are among airlines that offer flights from Toronto to JMK with one stop in cities such as Paris, Athens, London, and Zurich.
Top 5 airlines serving from Toronto to Greece
The connecting flight lay over was 4.00 hours, the gate agent booked me on the next flight which was about to depart at no extra cost.
Actually the flight was on time. New plane, food was okay but not great.
Old plane, hard seats, 1.30 hours delay, while seating on the plane waiting for departure.
Great boarding. Everything was on time. Plane was a bit old and the crew could have provided better drink service.
Boarding was a little chaotic but it was a very large flight. It just wasn’t fast. And there was no noticeable difference between zones boarding.
Crew was pleasant. Aircraft was very dated and uncomfortable for our nearly 4 hour flight. We were in row 17 and they ran out of purchasable food by the time they got to us.
We were lucky enough to arrive at the right time. The staff at YYZ did our complete check in and luggage tags for us. Even made sure we knew where we were to head next and how to get there. It truly was one of the best and easiest check inside. Thanks team.
Compagnie efficace et bons prix. Les sièges en classe club pourraient être plus confortables.
Lisbon, make sure to get food , coffee prior to going to boarding gates as there is no food being served after. Only vending machines. A lot of check points to get to the boarding gates. Not enough seating for passengers waiting to board. Crew was very courteous and kind.
Once we got through the long line at security, everything was very good from boarding to exiting the place. The flight crew was very friendly. What Air Transat could do much better is to put us through to TSA Pre-Check since my wife and I are Nexus members. We have never enjoyed this privilege with Air Transat, but, we always get this with Air Canada at the FLL airport. So, this is possible to do.
did not get the seats we had specially paid for
This is a no frills airline. You cant expect much for the price. Low cost flight, clean, nice staff. That's all I need for the price. If you want more, book with another airline and pay more. For Europe trips, PLAY is the ONLY airline I use
Misleading instructions for check in. Although I did virtual check in and was instructed to head to security, once I was at security, they told me to go back to Play ticket counter and get paper tickets. Also, beware that Play doesn’t participate in TSA PreCheck. I didn’t know that, despite entering PreCheck info when I purchased the tickets. I wasted time in the TSA PreCheck line as well. So we had two setbacks at check in.
It's a budget airline, so forewarned is forearmed. Yes, you pay for everything like carry-on, checked baggage, seat selection, but that's becoming the case with major airlines. Bringing your own snacks and entertainment on board is highly recommended. It's no frills, but the crew, the plane and the flight itself was great. If you want pampering go for a larger airline. If you just want to get from A to B in comfort and safety, Play is a great choice.
It is a low cost airline. Staff are courteous. There is no entertainment. Food is purchased.
Upon boarding, the people at the gate were extremely rude, there were no outlets on a 6 hour international flight, there was no entertainment, all food and drink was purchase only (even snacks), and my seat reclining function was fully broken. The only redeeming quality was the flight attendants were extremely nice. This was by far the worst flight I have ever been on in my entire life
I don’t know how international flights can’t have media screens to keep people entertained for the long flight. Ugh.
Typical experience for budget airline. Boarding from KEF required bus transit from the gate to plane, so if you had "priority boarding" it was useless as it was simply a free-for-all when getting off the bus. But still no issues with getting our luggage into overhead bin so not really a problem.
Was very apprehensive about flying Play, but the flight was fine. Nothing special, nothing horrible. Fair price to get from New York to Iceland.
I wasn’t able to check in online the day before or the day of because their web configuration or business model idk. I arrived an hour early and check was closed and there was no one around to speak to and eventually was told there was no possible way to get a digital ticket despite I had no luggage to check and would have easily made it through security to boarding and had to pay for a new ticket for $330 ontop of the $169 I spend for the ticket and then I missed my rental car for $305 because I only arrived at midnight instead of noon that I was originally intended. All booked through kayak. I hope there is some kind of insurance from kayak because this was totally preventable had I not been blocked by play air from getting my check in and plane ticket.
It was an excellent experience, traveling from Toronto to Denver with United.
Ontime boarding. Almost 1 hour take off delay. We could have boarded slightly later since the pilots were in traffic
I go am isle seat because it was half empty Food strike no food available
Flight was delayed, jeopardizing the following connections. Food was terrible. Crew was great.
This was the first AC flight in a long time that we experienced no delays or frustrations. The gate attendant was extremely polite and accommodating to my husband who has Parkinson’s disease which made boarding extremely stress free. Flight departed ON TIME and was a smooth ride. If only all my AC experiences could be like this.
Great experience on this Air Canada flight. Everyone was polite and respectful, even the passengers are very polite.
My wife and I especially liked the fact that the Toronto agent went beyond expectation to allow my wife and I to sit together. There was no option for us when we booked our seats. Very thankful!
I didn’t like the fact that all the customs officers went to lunch so I was in line for 90 minutes due to where the staff directed me. We were told three very different reasons for why the plane was delayed. It was a crowded plane with difficult storage situations for the Carry On bags. The Air Canada airline staff were all very good and professional. I was so disappointed in my cheese and fruit box as the cheese had molded and the fruit wasn’t fresh so I couldn’t eat the majority of the food. This was the last meal I could find as the restaurants had closed when I got in to my destination. I think you could work on improving the food quality.
Once again my complaint is how close the seats are together. Also, the bathrooms were not very clean by the second half of the flight.
Excellent in flight service, perhaps the best we've ever had. Business class feels tired and needs improvement to compete with other airlines. The food looked good but tasted terrible. Check in was quick, the flight arrived early and our luggage was on our flight with us.
Air Canada from Edmonton to Toronto was disappointing but Lufthansa from Toronto to Frankfurt was excellent.
Departure was delayed by 2 hours and passengers were sitting on the plane.
I ended up buying (for $340) "extra space" seats because I my flying partner was given a STY boarding pass, leading me to conclude that she was on standby and that we had to buy seats on the flight. I later learned that the flight was not sold out and that we could have gotten on as usual. To be honest, I felt swindled.
I'm Canadian. I have the unfortunate experience of pretty not having the choice to fly with them. THEY ARE TERRIBLE.
Got auestioned multiple times by gate agents. They ran out of chicken for the first meal. Slept pretty good on it and had good entertainment.
Terrible. This airline will cancel flights at very short notice.
Everything was fine except that the ground personnel in Toronto wasn't able to operate the jet bridge, so that everybody was stuck in the plane after landing for 40 min, so I missed my connection.
Right before boarding and we pass through the x—ray we had to open our luggage again. This could be avoided.
The flight attendants were just awesome. Friendly, professional, timely, etc.
They have more than 4 hours delay, and broken all my bags
Great little city hopper plane. Unfussy and roomy. Nice little snack provided too
Entertainment catalog certainly needs an upgrade to include better and latest content. Food was not good at all - they need to cook something edible. Five starts to the crew and on tim performance of British airways though!!
Annoying customer pushing my seat did not make this pleasant.
We have business class seats from Los Angeles to London. The crew is friendly and provided great service. The flight was very comfortable and very smooth. Will use this airlines again in the future.
Staff , Comfort and Food were excellent. My individual lamp did not work so I could not read, neither my novel nor the menu.
It was ok but not at a business class standard No entertainment system available which is poor for a 3+ hour journey Food was ok and service was good though
Late boarding with inconsistent excuses. Bulk head seats were very small and uncomfortable. 1 tiny candy bar and a water were only food provisions. Food for purchase was unavailable.
Boarding ,checking in was easy and quick . Comfort was not good.
Good flight. Was delayed, but that wasn’t a big deal. The crew were nice. Unfortunately the seats still recline, I had to ask the passenger in front of me to get her seat upright, as she made herself too comfortable and I was unable to move in my seat. EasyJet seats are fixed now to avoid such aggravation. About one third of the plane was empty, but when I checked in before departure, I was unable to change my seat without incurring expenses. That leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.
Taking off and landing was so smooth. I like the food too. Served 3 meals on both flights. I have been telling my friends to take British airways
