Maritime Museums tell the exciting & intriguing stories of Naval past, the high seas and mans journey through the powerful Oceans. His Ship, how he navigated and most of all how great ocean battles were won & lost out in the blue ocean battlefield.

The  Mariners Museum & Park  has many fantastic exhibits throughout. Such as the  international Small Craft center  which features a wide variety of naval vessels from all over the world! Spread out over 17,500 square foot the center houses 150 boats from 42 different countries. A unique international focus is a real highlight at the Mariners Museum & Park.

There area is great for all ages/audiences & features a variety of interesting categories from Maritime Environment to Materials and cultures etc.

The Conveyance category highlights, the various boats & equipment used for transportation and harvesting the ocean jewels.

Experimental & Hybrid Boats:

The experimental section is an interesting one which uses boats to test certain theories via experiment. This can be really informative & interesting.

Another interesting section is the live conservation area, where staff & volunteers work on the boats!

Action Photography Exhibit:

"Seziing the moment" The evolution of Action Photography is a fascinating exhibit of 20th Century Maritime photography from the Horace Havemeyer III Collection. These provide a real look back in time into the rough seas of yesteryear.

USS Monitor Center & Foundation:

USS Monitor Center features the infamous "BATTLE OF THE IRONCLADS". Outlining the Civil war era, USS  Monitor  and CSS  Virginia  meeting head to head at Hampton Roads, VA. This was the first battle of the ironclads in 1862 & although neither ship won the battle both proved the triumphant power of Iron over wood.

This kick started a revolution in Ship design, warfare and even psychology! With William Keeler (USS Monitor) saying to his wife "There isn't enough danger to give us glory" , "The Poetry of the profession is gone!

14. Battleship Cove Mariners Museum

Location: fall river, massachusetts.

" Battleship Cove  is dedicated to the preservation of a historical memorial providing the public with an educational experience to honor patriotism and country ."

As home to the largest collection of naval vessels anywhere in the world, Battleship Cove is a real great place to visit. From the USS Massachusetts Battleship to the USS ST Paul "the fighting saint" a cruiser which served proudly in World War II, Korea, and Vietnam until she finally retired in 1971...a real record breaking career.

Other Great vessels include the destroyer USS Joseph P. Kennedy, the USS lionfish Submarine and even the Soviet-built guided missile corvetter Hiddensee.

Battleship Cove Mariners Museum USA

Other Great highlights include RMS TITANIC exhibit which explores the  "The Birth and Death of a Titan: the Story of the TITANIC," which opens in April 2019.

The  Maine Maritime Museum   opens the doors to Maine’s Maritime history, at the  Kennebec Riverside facility. This 20 acre facility is the United States only in tact historic wooden shipyard, intriguing galleries and even a fully working boating shop!

Due to it's prime waterfront location the Maine Maritime Museum offers cruises daily to catch a glimpse of some of the most iconic lighthouses!

The Bath Iron works tour is immersive 2.5 hour tour which will taking you through "Building Americas Navy" and give you insight into the construction, people and ships which make it all happen! At the end of it you will definitely have their popular phrase stuck into your head “Bath Built is Best Built.”

12. Mystic Seaport

Delve back in time & learn about the historic art of wooden shipbuilding. When you visit an astonishing birds eye view can be seen from the visitors gallery. From there you can see the entire workshop, including the woodwork machinery such as an 85 foot spar lathe. Other highlights include a old school saw mill and a metal working shop.

This is really a step back in time with many New England trade shows & businesses staffed with period musicians, storytellers and skilled craftspeople!

You should also check out the USS Becuna, "Becky" is a WWII submarine launched in 1944. This pride of the U.S did five wartime patrols and is credited with sinked 3.5 Japanese Merchant ships.

In 1951 it was converted to what is called a (Guppy 1A type) this gave it an advanced radar and torpedo weapons such as Nuclear Warheads!

Independence Seaport Museum also has a range of fantastic workshops from Cruiser Olympia improvements such as skylights & benches to the National Whaleboat project & even the construction of various sailboats.

The Maritime Museum also runs some fun activities, such as Kayaking excursions down the Delaware river!

This great wooden ship was completed in 2016 by staff and many volunteers from the Museums "Workshop on Water".  This one is great fun for kids to climb on board & pretend there pirates!

10. USS Constitution Museum

The USS Constitution Museum has a mission to engage all generations in the story of “Old Ironsides”  and spark excitement about maritime heritage and naval service!  With the worlds oldest warship still afloat the USS  Constitution is a true symbol of the honor, and courage of America’s sailors.

The Naval Yard

Originally Built as one of the six naval shipyards in the United States, the Charlestown Navy Yard was a centre of innovation, haven for many talented craftspeople, and even the home to officers, sailors, and Marines for over 174 years!

These days, you can catch a glimpse of the two Museums, the USS Constitution and the USS Casin Young. Which took part in several pacific battles in WWII and even survived two direct Kamikaze hits!

9. Washington Naval Museum

The  Washington Naval Museum  is the only naval museum which fully records and gives a intriguing overview into the history of the U.S. Navy from its inception to the modern day.

Opened to the public in 1963, the flagship of the U.S Navy has a range of interesting exhibits from historic Naval Gun Factory, to a few submarine exhibits one such is titled "Dive! Dive! Dive!  U.S. Navy Submarines!"

8. Michigan Maritime Museum

Location: south haven, michigan.

Michigan Maritime Museum  offers a great opportunity to gain some insight into Maritime heritage of the Great Lakes. Spread out over 5 buildings, exhibits are always popular and active with everything from Boat building to maritime skills lessons and a whole host of other activities!

With a modern habor and beaches close by there is a great community vibe around the area and various on water experiences with are really interactive.

The most popular on water experience is the  Friends Good Will.  This tells the intense story of her pivotal role in trade during the 1800s & war of 1812.

The replica tail ship allows visitors to hop on board & set sail. With the sails billowing and 6 pound cannon looking mean, the most fantastic way to experience true history, is by living it!

7. Los Angeles Maritime Museum

Location: san pedro, los angeles, california.

The  Los Angeles Maritime Museum  , is an interesting Museum with a variety of exhibits such a monuments from the USS Los Angeles to the history of LA Harbor fishing "Caught, Canned, Eaten" and even an exhibit called "20,000 hardhats under the sea" a century of commercial hard hat diving! There are also a variety of interactive kids exhibits to keep the little ones engaged.

6. San Diego Maritime Museum & USS Midway

USS Midway Museum  is home to the longest serving aircraft Carrier in United States Naval history! It served between the years of 1945 to 1992.

4. Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum

The  Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum   located in St Michaels, Maryland on the Miles River is dedicated to preserving and exploring the history and culture of the Chesapeake Bay region.

Responsible Travel: A Unique Approach To Sustainable Marine Tourism

Sustainable tourism goes beyond reusing towels and sheets, hotels with LED lighting and some locally sourced food. In our work looking at coastal sustainable development issues, we cannot reach agreement – tourism is a powerful force for bad, and sometimes for good. Nearly everyone has experienced a life changing moment due to a travel experience. Many have learned cultural tolerance by replacing their myths with knowledge due to travel. And, sometimes tourism can help protect cultural heritage, social balance and ecological balance.

Tourism, fast becoming the largest global business, employs one out of twelve persons and produces $6.5 trillion of the world’s economy. Residents, combined with the more than 180 million tourists that flock to the coasts each year, place heavy demands on the unique natural systems and resources that make coastal areas so attractive and productive. Tourism also affects the food chain, according to the National Climate Assessment 2014 Global Change Report . The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) believes about one-third of food produced for human consumption in the world each year is lost or wasted, and that the tourism industry has a role in this.

Protecting local marine resources is one of the most urgent needs in promoting sustainable tourism. Sustainable coastal tourism can help preserve artisanal fishing communities, allow for subsistence fishing, protect the environment and make positive contributions to sustainable economic development. To that end we should look to create more and increase the size of marine protected areas (MPAs). This will improve the ability of local people to supply fish, and for managing supply with safer local systems for aquaculture.

How To Help Protect Marine Resources

When it comes to marine protected areas and tourism, that means good management of no-take areas and fishing areas to ensure high quality, low impact fisheries to deliver to restaurants, resorts and residents.  It means ensuring that everyone abides by the same set of rules in protecting resources—from reefs to seagrass meadows to the creatures themselves.  It means making sure hotels, businesses and residences do not contribute sewage and other pollution into the marine protected areas—or the waterways that feed into them.  It means engaging everyone in preventing litter, reducing use of single-use plastics, and finding ways to address waste management at every level. MPAs can be major tourist attractions, which broaden coastal communities economic options. In well-managed MPAs tourists can see endangered species, coral reefs and beautiful beaches. The fee tourists would pay would support conservation and livelihood of the local communities.

One way to look at this is “community self-governance,” which takes on a community-based approach and encourages local people to take ownership and become environmental custodians. With help they can develop policies and programs to protect fisheries, locally owned small businesses and ocean resources.

The Resort Partnership Strategy

The Ocean Foundation ’s President, Mark J. Spalding, has worked in the field of responsible coastal tourism for over 25 years. He has focused on developing strategies for human activities in which healthy natural resources support healthy human communities that thrive economically, socially, aesthetically and environmentally. His diverse professional and personal experience is brought to bear on each new project. As such, he established a unique model of “resort partnerships” to assure that tourism development benefits the communities in which they are located, under the rubric of “Love this Place and its People.”™ As part of this work, our team developed an award-winning set of Coastal Sustainable Development Standards.

Our resort partnership strategy is designed to provide funding over time — not just up front — to meet the needs of the community as well as to address the maintenance and enforcement elements of conservation areas that may have been established as part of the resort’s initial design. The focus is both on land and in the water, with 1% of the gross revenue from coastal and island tourism developments. We only work with developers who incorporate best practices into their developments for the highest levels of social, economic, aesthetic, and ecological sustainability during planning, construction, and operation. Public-private partnerships like these to promote sustainability and conservation are more than just a market trend and a PR strategy—this model helps to ensure the long-term success of the project by proactively addressing the social, ecological, economic and aesthetic impacts of the development. Otherwise, the tourism project risks undermining the natural beauty of the place, and the unique cultural aspects that attract travelers in the first place.

Give Back Through Travel

Many of us have had the luxury of traveling at some point in our lives, but how often do we give back to the communities we are visiting or how effective is our philanthropy in those communities? The impact of tourism and travel on the community or environment that is being visited isn’t always at the forefront of travelers’ minds, which is why organizations such as The Ocean Foundation and our programs such as our resort partnership model are so important.

It can be hard for tourists to discern which practices are sustainable and beneficial to the community and which aren’t so great. As one may do before any trip, we suggest doing a little research into the resort, hotel, area you are staying and see what kind of practices they have in place. There you will find information on tourism companies that are dedicated to the community and environment as well as easy tips for making your trip as sustainable as possible.

Almost all of us have deep emotional connection to the coasts and ocean.  Whether it is for stress relief, health and wellness , inspiration and recreation, when we journey to the sea, we want it to live up to our fond memories or the beautiful photographs that inspired our choice.  And we are disappointed when it does not. The seas also provide delicious seafood which is enjoyed by tourists and locals alike.

While marine adventures excite and inspire, they also provide important benefits for local communities. Marine tourism supports local jobs, such as surf instructors and dive guides. It also generates visitor spending at nearby hotels, restaurants, and other establishments. Marine tourism fees can even subsidize conservation and help fund marine protected areas. Marine tourism includes those recreational activities which involve travel away from one’s place of residence and which have as their host or focus the marine environment. Such environments include waters that are both saline and tide affected (Orams 1999 ).

The use of the sea for recreation and tourism has grown extensively over the latter half of the twentieth century and on into the twenty-first century. This growth is being experienced globally, both in terms of locations, activities, and numbers of participants. Over the past three decades, a feature of this growth has been the expansion of activities driven by the invention and adoption of new technologies. These advances have spawned specialized communities of marine tourists who travel to locations which allow them to engage in their specific passion. Thanks to its vast size, you can access the Great Barrier Reef from various points along the Queensland coast. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park was established in 1975 to protect the reef's fragile ecosystems. Within its borders lie more than 2,900 coral reefs, 600 continental islands, 300 coral cays, seagrass beds, and many mangrove islands.

Gliding off the edge of the continental shelf over 90-meter drop-offs can feel like flying over an underwater jungle.

If you're based in Port Douglas and prefer to experience the reef on a sailing adventure, the Low Isles Great Barrier Reef Sailing Cruise from Port Douglas is a great option. It includes a full-day sailing catamaran cruise to Low Isles, where you can snorkel straight off the white-sand beach, guided by a marine biologist, with the chance to see green sea turtles. The trip also includes a glass-bottom boat coral viewing, a guided beach walk, and a tropical buffet lunch.

Quicksilver operates popular cruises aboard high-speed catamarans from Port Douglas with coach transfers from Cairns. Trips typically include presentations by marine biologists, dive or snorkel experiences, and coral viewing in a semi submersible. For a more intimate and peaceful experience, you can charter a sailboat. Idyllic mooring spots include dazzling Whitehaven Beach and Butterfly Bay . Bareboat charters are also available from Cairns or Airlie Beach to the outer Great Barrier Reef and are especially popular around the Whitsunday Islands. You can learn the ropes with a qualified instructor or charter vessels with an experienced crew.

A scenic flight is a great way to appreciate the awe-inspiring magnitude of this natural wonder. Helicopter and seaplanes soar over the mottled expanses of coral reefs and palm-fringed islands. Options range from 15-minute flights to full-day flying trips, with water sports and lunch included.

One of the best natural features of the Great Barrier Reef to see from the air is Heart Reef . This naturally formed heart-shaped coral reef is a favorite venue for romantic flyover proposals.

If you want to see the reef from more than one perspective, the Great Barrier Reef Scenic Helicopter Tour and Cruise from Cairns is an excellent option. This full-day tour includes a 25-minute flight with informative commentary and a chance to snorkel, swim, or dive along the reef.

If you're based in Cairns, you can take a day trip to one of these beautiful tropical islands. Green Island , about a 45-minute cruise by high-speed catamaran from Cairns, is the most popular but also the most crowded of the two. Popular things to do here include snorkeling, glass-bottomed boat tours, and seeing the world's largest captive croc at Marineland Crocodile Park . You can also stay overnight at the Green Island Resort .

If you prefer a more peaceful, low-key island escape, Fitzroy Island is a great choice, with better snorkeling opportunities, scenic hiking trails, and lovely white-sand and crushed-coral beaches.

A fun way to experience these islands is on the Green Island Day Trip from Cairns and the Fitzroy Island Day Trip from Cairns . Both these trips include return transport to the islands, and you can tailor your itinerary to include other activities such as snorkeling, glass-bottom boat tours, and more.

Magnetic Island is part of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and is famous for its beautiful beaches, secluded bays, and resident koalas. It's about a 20-minute ferry ride from Townsville .

Magnetic Island National Park covers more than half the island and protects these lovable creatures, as well as the other species that make their home here, including many nesting sea turtles.

Popular things to do on Magnetic Island involve nature, history, and the water. You can hike along 24 kilometers of walking tracks, explore historic World War II forts, kayak, snorkel, dive reefs and wrecks, horseback ride, enjoy a spa treatment, or shop at the local markets and galleries.

Big-game fishing is also excellent in the surrounding waters, with the chance to catch coveted species such as marlin, sailfish, tuna, and mahi-mahi. Accommodations on the island range from campsites and the mid-range Island Leisure Resort to the upscale Peppers Blue On Blue Resort .

You can access the island, affectionately known as "Maggie Island" by the locals, via the 20-minute Magnetic Island Round-Trip Ferry From Townsville , or you can take your own vehicle across on the car ferry.

Lizard Island is a tropical escapist's fantasy. This ravishing and remote island lies in the far north of the Great Barrier Reef, about 250 kilometers northeast of Cairns. Here, you'll find 24 secluded beaches and coral reefs just offshore in a luminous blue lagoon.

Lizard Island National Park protects the rich wildlife here, which includes the island's abundant namesake monitor lizards, as well as flying foxes, snakes, and prolific birdlife. Some of the other islands in the national park are popular nesting sites for seabirds, particularly terns.

On Lizard Island's northwestern side, the exclusive 40-villa Lizard Island Resort is a favorite hideaway for honeymooners and couples. This luxury all-inclusive retreat offers five-star service, gourmet meals, day trips to deserted beaches and top dive sites such as the famous nearby Cod Hole , and snorkeling in the flourishing fringing reefs right off the beach.

On a budget? Campsites are also available on the northwest side of Lizard Island at Watsons Bay. You can access the island on a scenic flight from Cairns.

About 110 kilometers north of Townsville, Orpheus Island is a peaceful island retreat within the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Tranquil bays and fringing reefs provide the perfect playground for nature lovers, and a national park protects the local flora and fauna.

The island is tiny. It's only about 12 kilometers long and one to 2.5 kilometers wide and lacks roads or formal hiking trails. The only way to access the island is by charter or private boat, keeping visitors to a minimum.

If you want to stay overnight, camping is available at Yanks Jetty, South Beach, and Pioneer Bay. The only other accommodation on the island is the beautiful Orpheus Island Lodge , an exclusive retreat with a maximum of only 28 guests at a time who arrive by helicopter from Townsville (30 minutes) or Cairns (1.5 hours). Popular things to do at the resort include picnics on secluded beaches, fishing, snorkeling, dive trips, and spa treatments. You can also borrow a dinghy and explore the island's beautiful bays on your own.

You can explore the Great Barrier Reef's southernmost islands on day trips. Protected by national parks, these three islands are all popular destinations for nature lovers, with the chance to see turtles, manta rays, and whales in typically crystal-clear waters with excellent visibility.

About eight kilometers from the town of Cardwell, Hinchinbrook Island is Australia's largest island national park. It's known for its dramatic topography, with craggy headlands, rainforests, waterfalls, pristine beaches, and mangrove-fringed estuaries. You can access the island, by private vessel or commercial ferries from Cardwell.

About 80 kilometers from Bundaberg, Lady Elliot Island sits in a Green Zone, the reef's highest protection zone, with superb diving and snorkeling opportunities. Turtles, manta rays, dolphins, sharks, and whales are among the abundant marine life in these waters, and the island is also home to a popular, no-frills eco-resort. You can access the island on a scenic flight from Bundaberg, Hervey Bay , Brisbane , or the Gold Coast .

Lady Musgrave Island is also a top spot for wilderness lovers. Camping is a popular pastime here, thanks to the island's beautiful lagoon, sheltered anchorage, and regular ferry service. Green and leatherback turtles, rays, and seabirds are among the rich wildlife found on the island and in its reef-dappled waters. 11. Belize Zoo

Belize Zoo is home to a wide variety of animals, from jaguars and ocelots to tapirs and toucans. It’s a fun and exciting place to learn about the immense biodiversity of Belize and makes for an educational and exciting day trip.

10. Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary

Get off-the-beaten-path in the rugged, mountainous Cockscomb Range. The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary situated in this stunning region of Belize is home to an incredible variety of wildlife and is the only jaguar reserve in the world.

Home to an estimated 170 species of birds, the sanctuary is also known for its wide array of mammals, reptiles, and amphibians. The best way to experience the sanctuary is to take a guided tour.

You’ll have the best chance to spot a variety of animals as you hike through the rainforest and up to the summit of the Cockscomb Range. Along the way, you’ll gain insight into the conservation efforts that are taking place in the sanctuary.

Located in the heart of Belize’s Orange Walk District, Lamanai is one of the largest and oldest Mayan archaeological sites in Central America. Its ruins date back to 1500 BC.

Today, visitors to Lamanai can explore the ancient Mayan city and marvel at its impressive monuments. This includes the towering High Temple, which stands almost 60 feet tall. Other highlights include the Jaguar Temple, which features a large jaguar head on its façade, and the Mask Temple, which is decorated with a large mask of the god Kinich Ahau.

One of the most interesting facts about Lamanai is that it’s still largely unexcavated. Meaning you can get a real sense of what life may have been like for the ancient Mayans. Lamanai will leave you with unforgettable memories that you’ll cherish for a lifetime.

8. Iguana Conservation Project

Spend the day among reptiles at the Iguana Conservation Project in San Ignacio.

The Iguana Conservation Project is focused on preserving the endangered Green Iguana species. The center includes a breeding program, which works to grow the population of the Green Iguana, and a sanctuary where rescued and injured iguanas are cared for.

If the Green Iguana isn’t already exciting, the sanctuary is also home to a variety of other species, such as parrots, toucans, and monkeys. Visitors can take a guided tour of the sanctuary where you’ll peel back the layers and better understand the region’s wildlife.

Round out your visit at the research center, where students and scientists come to study the iguanas. The center is open to the public and offers educational tours and presentations.

7. Secret Beach, Ambergris Caye

Located within the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, ATM is an ancient limestone cave that was used by the ancient Maya for religious ceremonies and rituals. It is home to the remains of 14 sacrificial victims, several stoneware ceramics, and various ancient artifacts.

Situated along a 16-mile stretch of white sandy beaches is the coastal town of Placencia.

This list should include Rio Frio Pools and the nearby cave. ATM Cave should probably be #2 or #1, although it might not even be open to the public much longer.

Stayed a week on Ambergris Cay at condo called Belize shores. Great jumping off point for touring Mayan ruins, snorkeling, eating out/ walking San Pedro . Great vacation, people friendly, good food, American dollar is currency .
