Hunter Hayes is “finally” set to kick off his “Red Sky Tour” in support of his highly-anticipated, soon-to-release album of the same name. The country singer-songwriter is launching the nationwide trek in May, beginning with a performance in San Diego, California.

“I PRESENT TO YOU - THE RED SKY TOUR!” Hayes announced on his social media channels on Tuesday (February 21), after teasing the date on his Instagram story. “It’s finally happening. Touring, playing shows for YOU is the BEST part of making music and I’m SO excited to see all of you back out on the road! So many surprises on this tour both on and off stage! …See You There!”

Red Sky is set to drop on April 21, Hayes shared in a long-awaited announcement earlier this month. His first-ever, fully-independent album is more than a decade in the making. Leading up to the album release, Hayes has debuted new tracks like “Missing You,” “Could’ve Been You,” “Sober” and, most recently, “Normal” and “Lonely Loves Me.”

“I’ve waited over a decade to say this… My first fully independent album, more than 3 years in the making - RED SKY - will be out everywhere APRIL 21st!”  Hayes exclaimed in his announcement  earlier this month. “This project is about the adventure of finding yourself to be yourself. Musically, it’s a road trip from where I’ve been to where I am. Lyrically, it’s for anyone who needs a reminder of how unique your fire inside is and how much the world needs more YOU in it. I’m so grateful to all the people who helped me bring this music and this message to life! I’ve never been more proud of a body of work than I am of RED SKY and I cannot wait for APRIL 21st to give it to YOU so you can make it YOURS.”

Hunter Hayes Unleashes Long-Awaited 'Red Sky' After Years In The Making

By Kelly Fisher

April 21, 2023

hunter hayes red sky tour set list

Hunter Hayes released his long-awaited 15-track album after years in the making and months of teasing his social media followers with details about the project. Hayes finally debuted Red Sky on Friday (April 21). Hayes has been teasing his next era of music since last summer, when he released “Missing You.” Since then, he’s also shared several other tracks — including “Normal,” “Lonely Loves Me,” “Sober” and “Friend,” to name a few — and other details about Red Sky , including his soon-to-begin tour of the same name.

“The road to Red Sky has been one of the most life-changing adventures of my human experience. So many challenges and so much growth required to dive deeper and reach higher,” Hayes reflected as he shared a series of photos on Instagram on Friday. “I traveled around the world in search for what the purpose of this album was and what my role was in making this music. I’m so grateful to make music for people who champion honesty, share authenticity and create a safe space for vulnerability. We’ve had incredible chats around life lessons and how to be human. We’ve shared our nerd sides and embraced what makes us all unique. You’ve always encouraged me to push myself out of my comfort zones and you raise the bar for challenging the rules and for that, I’m deeply grateful.

“This project represents freedom in so many ways and I have so many people to thank for giving me that freedom,” he continued. “I’m also filled with immense gratitude for all the people who have worked SO HARD to bring this project and these messages to life. I’ll gush, brag and introduce you to all my friends in another post but for now, for starters, thank you for lifting me up and helping me get to this point in time with this project to finally be able to say… WELCOME TO RED SKY.”

“I’ve waited over a decade to say this… My first fully independent album, more than 3 years in the making - RED SKY - will be out everywhere APRIL 21st!”  Hayes exclaimed in an announcement  in February. “This project is about the adventure of finding yourself to be yourself. I’ve never been more proud of a body of work than I am of RED SKY and I cannot wait for APRIL 21st to give it to YOU so you can make it YOURS.”

Hayes previously promised “ many surprises on this tour both on and off stage .” The “Red Sky Tour” is set to kick off on May 3 in San Diego, California. Other stops include Texas, Louisiana, Georgia, South Caroina, New. York, New. Jersey, Colorado and other destinations along the nationwide trek. Hayes recently announced that the “Red Sky Tour” will also include Sam DeRosa , Frawley , Abby Anderson and Loren Gray .

“It’s nice to be talking about this project after working on it for three years,” said country superstar Hunter Hayes on his new album Red Sky, out today. “I feel like I’m breathing fresh air. When the album comes out, it’s like, ok… now it gets to live its life. So that’s what I’m most excited about right now.”

How do you even begin to sum up Hayes’ career up to this point? The man plays 30+ instruments, has been nominated for five Grammy Awards, has shared the stage with Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, and Rascal Flatts, among others, and has a catalog of songs full of instant classics (“Wanted,” “I Want Crazy”) and underrated gems (“If It’s Just Me,” “Faith To Fall Back On”), but all of them are masterclasses in vocal and instrumental proficiency. Vocally, it could be argued that he runs circles around every male in contemporary pop and country. His guitar playing is calculated and meticulous, only replicated in mainstream music by a select few, such as H.E.R and John Mayer. To make it, he had to play the game. He had to go on media tours and, with his own brand of awkward nerd humor, navigate the outright ridiculous and salacious questions reserved for the Justin Bieber’s of the world. Hayes, the consummate professional, dealt with it. He went in, did his job, then got to go up onstage and be what he really is: a musical genius.

With that recap out of the way, we get to Red Sky. Hayes’ approach to this record was different from his past work. Nine out of the record’s fifteen songs have been released, with some dating as far back as 2021. “There are far less rules than there used to be,” he said with a smile. “Rather than put out three songs and then put out the album, we all wanted as many songs as possible to have their own day.” Tracks like “If You Change Your Mind,” a mix of theatrical and dream-pop, and “The One That Got Away,” another pop-leaning cut, have had time to breathe, and are two of the best on the record.

Hayes’ foray into pop, despite songs like “Tattoo” and “Everybody’s Got Somebody But Me” deep in his discography, isn’t a complete left turn. His time as The Astronaut on “The Masked Singer,” which saw him cover a litany of pop tunes including “Shape Of You” by Ed Sheeran and “If I Can’t Have You” by Shawn Mendes, was a reminder to many of just how versatile of a vocalist he can be. Hayes spoke fondly of his time on the show, saying it was both a positive learning and social experience (he cited “new friend” Jesse McCartney… casual, right?). “This was really early in the Red Sky process, and I was trying to find out what it was,” he said. “I was kind of working on multiple projects at the same time with the notion that Red Sky was going to be the project where I did the things I hadn’t been able to do before.” He took the time to begin to explore where he was at vocally. “I was trying to find the new comfortable placement,” he said. “The place where it felt like it was just… meant to be. Not forced, not trying, not emulating, not even ‘inspired by.’ It was just ‘What is the blank slate Hunter voice?’ I was trying to find that during that process.” Tracks like “Someone Will” and “Could’ve Been You” off the new record showcase that vocal growth in spades. He sounds phenomenal, but he also sounds like he’s having fun. There’s an ease and a playfulness to his vocal approach that he has never shown before, and that level of freedom is a major factor in the overall feel of the record.

Freedom is a key aspect of the record, as Red Sky is Hayes’ first independent album. The way he discusses it, and the limitless options surrounding it (which included an Excel sheet of 50+ songs for him and his team to sift through to their heart’s content), is exactly how you’d imagine a 31-year-old virtuoso with no restrictions to talk about making an album. “If anything, it wasn’t scary, it was like, ‘I can do anything. Oh shit, what do I do now?’, he said with a laugh. “It went from being that to the part of my story I felt was the most empowering. For me, at least. The topic of taking back ownership of your artist voice, and the chance to not make decisions based off pleasing a community.” Being independent has also provided him the opportunity to not have to label himself, or his project, as one genre. The songs on Red Sky, like the acoustic pop “About A Boy” and experimental pop-leaning “Feelings” reflect the fluidity of the sound even more so than on his sophomore album Storyline, which saw him bounce between pop, country, and rock.

“Fans will hear growth… they’ll hear more,” he said. “I feel my goal, my job as an artist, and it’s a tough one, is to make music so unique that you are creating your own genre. As a singer/songwriter, you have the opportunity to create something that includes all of your influences but isn’t limited to any specific frame. All my favorite artists… you could say that this song was this or that genre. At the end of the day, they just covered a lot of ground. That’s what made them so unique… so iconic. That’s the bar, so I’m just constantly climbing a ladder to get to that point. To create a thing that I feel like is me as a genre.”
“In explaining what I’m doing now, it’s like, I haven’t really changed what I’m doing,” he said, not wanting fans to feel like he is abandoning the sound they fell in love with him for. “I’m just letting you hear all of the stuff that got shelved for years. I’m letting you hear all of the other things that excite me as well as the core thing of what I do. ‘About A Boy,’ ‘Normal,’ and ‘Someone Will’ have a lot of the same DNA as the debut album. The way the album is structured it goes from very familiar sounding to, ‘Ok, now here is the fun stuff that we haven’t gotten to do yet.’”

Though likely with decades left to go, Hayes, with eleven mainstream years under his belt already, is dedicated to helping the next generation of artists. Not just on a musical level, but in what they need in their everyday life. He hesitated to name-drop the person who acted in that manner for him, but referenced Elton John as someone who routinely checks in. John, who selflessly has done the same for so many young artists, has inspired Hayes to help pay it forward. “I’m always cautious to give like… I don’t see myself… it’s a weird balance for me,” he said, trying to accurately describe his position. “The one thing I am most passionate about is making sure that new artists have the tools, the information, and some sort of context, expertise, counsel… all of the above. Not just getting information from the internet, but from multiple sources of people. It’s not about advice, because your experience is completely different from mine, but it feels like a calling and a privilege to be able to speak from whatever my experience is into someone else’s to make sure they have all the tools they can possibly have.”

Hayes is fully entrenched in an exciting new chapter of his career. Red Sky is, without a doubt, both a musical victory lap and a personal revelation. You can catch him performing cuts from the record, as well as all the fan favorites, on tour this summer:

Hunter Hayes: The Red Sky Tour

With loren gray.

  • This event has passed.

Listen to Hunter Hayes

Not so long ago, Hunter Hayes let go. Of the expectations. Of the pressure. Of the necessity to follow a specific formula for his career. Following a decade of playing by the rules and sticking to country music conventions, the five-time GRAMMY-nominated multi-instrumentalist and youngest ever male act to top the Billboard Hot Country charts is doubling down on his ever-searching musical mindset. Or as Hayes puts it: “I’m creating my own rules to play by so I don’t have to play by anyone else’s.”

It’s this new no-holds-barred mindset that’s resulted in some of Hayes’ most inspired music yet. On his forthcoming album, Red Sky , the singer-songwriter is executing at the highest level of his musical career: crafting memorable melodies and instantly catchy hooks with a top-notch musician’s discerning ear. It shows in the boundary-pushing songs he’s set to release: from the upbeat pop of “Sober” to the harmony-drenched “Feelings” to the chant-along chorus on lead single “Missing You.”

This norm-defying mentality—of no longer sticking to the script and instead letting his musical sensibility guide him—explains why Hayes says he’s never been happier or more engaged with the music he’s creating.

Celebrate Our 20th Anniversary!

Though he got his start in country music, Hunter Hayes has never been one for genres. He proved that with a string of 2023 releases: Normal and Victory found the Louisiana native exploring pop, R&B, and even a bit of funk. Red Sky pulls together tracks from both projects, as well as new cuts like “High Tide” and the older song “If You Change Your Mind,” a glimmering pop tune with soulful production and a particularly dynamic vocal from Hayes. Other highlights include the vulnerable ballad “Normal,” on which Hayes details time spent in therapy, and the introspective “About a Boy.” Hayes’ masterful guitar playing is all over the record, too; hear it in the percussive, muted arpeggios on “Could’ve Been You” and the icy, rhythmic funk chords of “Sober.” The roster of collaborators on the album eschews Music Row mainstays and instead includes pop hitmakers Alex Delicata (Beyoncé, Rihanna), Rollo (BTS, Charli XCX),and Dan Book (Dove Cameron, Britney Spears).

About the Artist

Five-time Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist and the youngest male act ever to top the  Billboard  Hot Country song chart, Hunter Hayes is ready to lean into a mindset he’d always carried with him: that genres are fluid, and, in his eyes, the best musicians are the ones able to play with all sorts of sounds and styles.

On his forthcoming new album,  Red Sky , the singer-songwriter is executing at the highest level of his musical career: crafting memorable melodies and instantly catchy hooks albeit with a top-notch musician’s discerning ear.

Following a hiatus from gigs during the pandemic, the adrenaline junkie of a live performer says he’s never been more exhilarated to hit the stage on a consistent basis.

ABOUT LOREN GRAY:

Loren Gray consistently defies expectations. Beyond the surface of a staggering social media imprint (85 million-plus total followers and counting), the Philadelphia-born and Los Angeles-based disruptor has established herself as a confident and uncompromising singer and songwriter, dynamic personality, and successful entrepreneur. Beyond popular  collaborations with Saweetie, Lost Kings, and TELYkast in addition to an appearance in music videos by  Taylor Swift and Kim Petras, she garnered nominations at the Teen Choice Awards and iHeartRadio  Music Awards.

Hunter Hayes' The Red Sky: Continued Tour Comes to Indianapolis

Contemporary country artist Hunter Hayes brought the second leg of his Red Sky Tour to Indianapolis this past Friday. I am absolutely ecstatic any chance I get to attend an event at the 500-capacity Deluxe Room inside the Old National Center, and this night was not any different. Hunter’s debut self-titled album was actually the first CD I ever purchased at the ripe age of 10. As an avid pop, rock, and alternative music fan, I have said for the past decade that I inherently dislike country music, unless we are talking about Hunter Hayes. The nostalgia that I felt within my soul the entire night felt like healing part of my inner child, in a way.

Hunter Hayes originates from Louisiana, where he began singing at the age of 2. At age 7, the quickly rising talent was invited by Bill Clinton, the president at the time, to perform at the White House. Shortly after co-writing the song “Play” for Rascal Flatt’s album, Nothing Like This , Hayes released his debut record under Castle Recording Studios in 2011. The second single from the album, "Wanted”, became the singer’s first number one, making him the youngest solo male country act to top Hot Country songs since 1973.

The 31-year-old artist released his sophomore album, Storyline , three years later, in 2014. In an effort to promote the album as well as raise awareness to end child hunger, Hunter broke the Guinness World Record for most concerts played in multiple cities in 24 hours. He has continued on to release three more full-length albums and to win multiple awards, including the People’s Choice Favorite Male Country Artist in 2015.

The environment for the evening felt nothing but safe and welcoming, with every fan in the room seemingly knowing that everyone was there to have fun and take care of each other. Right on time, Hunter graced the stage, and the heavy anticipation that previously filled the air dispersed. The set began with “High Tide”, the opening track of the 2023 release and namesake of the tour, Red Sky .

Before the performance of the emotional fan favorite, “Invisible”, the singer gave the crowd a beautiful, tear-jerking speech about the importance of knowing that you are never alone. The feeling and passion that poured out of him during this performance solidified it as my favorite part of the show.

After the performances of many of his lesser-known tracks, Hunter was sure to close everything out with songs that no one in the room couldn't help but to sing to. These included “I Want Crazy”, “Storm Warning”, and “Wanted”. I had an incredible night attending the Red Sky: Continued Tour , and if you are looking for a fun evening full of modern, rock-influenced country, this tour is for you. The remaining dates of the North America Tour are listed below.
