Neighbours: The Celebration Tour review – the perfect blend of poignancy and Toadfish jokes

This stage show sees the actors behind Paul Robinson and Toadie argue over who had most marriages, before a genuinely touching thank you to fans – who leave the show’s stars in tears

N eighbours being cancelled, Kylie and Jason Donovan reprising their roles and the soap creating international headlines for its celebratory finale … before being revived by a streaming service just over three months later is, no question, peak Neighbours .

The same can also be said for the tour. A one-off Live in Conversation special had been planned, featuring cast members talking about and sharing their favourite moments, to mark the Australian soap’s 35th anniversary in 2020. Those plans were then shelved because of Covid. Then last year, when the show was cancelled after Channel 5 decided to not renew its contract, Neighbours announced The Farewell Tour. Now, with the soap being picked up by Amazon’s Freevee streaming service , it has changed its name once again to Neighbours: The Celebration Tour.

The excitement in the room beforehand was palpable, the gift shop thronged with fans buying plastic Ramsay Street replica signs. The show itself, mostly consisting of a Q&A, leaned heavily into discussing the more surreal elements of the daytime soap that made it such a firm favourite. “Life on Neighbours for Toadie was about being involved in a bouncy castle accident, being run over, shot …” said the host, Leah Boleto, to the actor who portrayed him, Ryan Moloney, as a montage of those accidents played silently on a screen behind them.

“What?! It could happen!” declared Jackie Woodburne (Susan Kennedy) when questioned about a storyline that involved her slipping on milk, banging her head and thinking she was a teenager. She recounted the time her character had to perform an emergency tracheostomy on Lou after he started choking in the aftermath of a tornado, aided only by a butter knife, a straw and instructions down the phone from her on-screen partner, Dr Karl Kennedy (Alan Fletcher). In case you are wondering, Lou made a full recovery. “All in a day’s work,” said Fletcher.

The audience cheered when shown a clip of Susan slapping Karl after he had admitted to an affair. April Rose Pengilly (Chloe Brennan) talked about how many Simpsons references she managed to slip into her dialogue. And Annie Jones (Plain Jane Superbrain) was introduced with a clip from a storyline where her son had revealed that he was an escort, followed by a portrait of Mrs Mangal falling off the wall and crashing to the ground.

This surrealism continued into the second half. It began with a montage of Neighbours explosions from over the years. Now with the cast sitting together, rather than being interviewed separately, there were lighthearted discussions on topics such as who had the most weddings, with Toadie’s seven (one notably ending with him accidentally driving off a cliff into the sea) beaten by Paul Robinson’s nine; the character, played by Stefan Dennis, has had six wives. It would have been nice if the cast had all sat together from the start of the show.

after newsletter promotion

The event was strongest when the cast spoke frankly about the shock of the soap’s cancellation, the pain they felt saying goodbye to the crew (some of whom left weeks before the final episode even aired), followed by their surprise that it had been saved . Neighbours was reincarnated by Amazon, but that was very much due to the fans, many of whom had been campaigning online for months and many of whom must have been in that audience. While the soap was often silly and surreal, it also contained a natural warmth and inclusiveness that many shows lack. The cast relished the opportunity to thank fans for their support, with several revealing that they had cried during the meet and greets that had taken place that day. It felt like a rare and genuine opportunity to say thank you.

It also ended with a rather touching moment. Directly before goading the entire audience into singing the soap’s theme tune, the cast got up from their seats and stood in a row at the front. Woodburne then reprised Susan’s narration from the soap’s final scene shown last July, when her character walked around Erinsborough making observations on her fellow neighbours. Only this time she shared the lines with her co-stars and added in several extra words. “Together we are … and we will continue to be … the perfect blend,” she said.

On Friday, we excitedly headed to the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester to watch Neighbours - The Celebration Tour . Read what our reviewer and huge Neighbours fan, Robert Jones had to say about this amazing evening... Everyone in the UK knows the Aussie TV series, Neighbours , whether it’s remembering running back from school to join the other 20 million viewers glued to the small screen as Charlene said, “I do” to Scott, or if like me, you’re a proper die-hard who has never missed an episode. It’s true, I’ve watched every single one, all 8903 of them. If you think that’s sad, then I suggest you stop reading and “rack off” as this review isn’t for you! My love for Neighbours started from the beginning when it first aired in the UK in October 1986, when I was an 9 year old boy, who like many, fell in love with the bright skies of Oz and welcomed Granny Helen and co into our family homes. They became our daily fix. We craved the 23 minutes of sheer joy and escapism from the grim Manchester weather and anything to avoid doing our school homework.

neighbours celebration tour running time

Fast forward to 2023, that 9 year old boy is now a 45 year old family man, and the passion for Erinsborough (and by the way, if you didn’t know already, is an anagram of Neighbours ) has never died. It’s not just a TV show for me, it is so much more. It gave me the thirst to travel and obviously the ultimate goal was to get to Australia. In 2003, my dream came true and I did the whole year away backpacking, living in Sydney for six months, and touring the whole country for the last half of the year. Of course, I had to go and visit Ramsay Street. I’m certainly not a religious man like Harold Bishop , but the day I stood in the middle of that cul-de-sac on Pin Oak Court, I nearly cried. I had arrived at my Mecca, my holy ground, in fact, spread my ashes already across Mrs Mangel’s lawn, I had finally made it! I filled my boots and went on the Neighbours tour, a couple of Neighbours nights where I mingled with some of the cast, and even bumped into some previous characters on my travels - Todd Landers was my tour guide as I climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and I was shocked to discover Rick Alessi was the doorman in a bar in Alice Springs. I've never been so pleased to meet a bouncer (sadly I never got the chance to meet the canine one!)

neighbours celebration tour running time

10 years later in 2013, I did it all again returning to Australia with my Polish girlfriend (now my wife and now also a Neighbours nut), back to Ramsay Street, tour, etc. My happy place! So when I heard Neighbours would be touring and coming to my home city, I was more excited than Karl and Susan opening up their blue box. It would cushion the blow a little of the devastating news that Neighbours was actually ending after 38 years. It was like losing a loved one hearing that my favourite show was coming to an end. The shockwaves throughout the fans was genuine. Cast members felt our pain and we grieved as one.  However, like all good soaps, there’s been the ultimate dramatic twist, as just over 100 days of mourning, we discovered the news that Neighbours had been rescued by Amazon and it was just a bad dream after all (sadly not the good type like Bouncer had).

neighbours celebration tour running time

Next to join in with the fun, enter Dr Karl ( Alan Fletcher ). If anyone was to bring the cheese and biscuits to the buffet, it had to be KK. We all adore his enthusiasm and passion. He knows how to get the crowd going. As Toadie cheekily joked, “Fletch is available for all birthdays and weddings!” Naturally the conversation turns to how he cheated on Susan (a number of times) and many more Karl stories follow. Free as a river, Fletch introduces his on-screen wife on to stage in his own unique way (I won’t spoil it for you) and suddenly this party is kickin’! Jackie Woodburne is a Neighbours favourite with fans. She’s loved beyond words and it’s clear to see by the shock on her face and tears in her eyes within seconds of entering the stage, how adored she is. She’s the Queen of Ramsay Street and how Manchester embraced her royal presence. Something that always makes the fans sit up is hearing the Irish twang in Jackie’s voice. She hides it so well as Susan , but when talking in interviews, her Irish roots are clearly on display. Such a beautiful voice too. She’s so underrated as an actress. Of course, like Laurel and Hardy or Morecambe and Wise , there wouldn’t be Karl without Susan – their partnership on screen is as strong as any. As Eddie Redmayne described them, “the greatest unsung acting duo in history” – we echo your words Eddie! Jackie and Alan’s love for their characters, each other as friends and actors, and of course, the show itself, are shared all night with the audience. Being sat on the front row right in front of them made the experience even more special for me. I felt like they had invited me round for a brew at number 28 and I was sat with my feet up on their settee admiring the family portrait of Malcolm , Billy and Libby .

neighbours celebration tour running time

Last but not least, here comes the final guest to the gathering – Mr Paul Robinson , a.k.a Stefan Dennis . Now the party can really start. We absolutely love Moneybags. What a fantastic bloke too. When I shook his hand tonight, I told him, “I can now die a happy man!” and I meant it! Neighbours just wouldn’t be the same without him. Whether he’s marrying for the 6 th time or fighting for his life during another epic storyline, Paul is a major reason we follow the show. As for Stefan , he looks nothing like his alter-ego. In fact, one lady said to me tonight, “Paul scrubs up well!” I had to wittingly reply, “Does he make you feel good?” Well, Stefan , you made the whole room feel good with your warm personality, honest and amusing tales, and we salute you for your amazing portrayal of one of the best TV baddies ever to grace our screens. We can’t wait to see what the next chapter has to offer. I’d love to see SIX the Neighbours Musical. Forget Henry VIII’s wives, I want a Broadway and West End production written about Mr Robinson’s exes.

neighbours celebration tour running time

After the interval, all 6 actors plus host, sat on the stage for more reflecting, discussion, looking back at the ones we’ve lost, a bloopers video and Q&A’s (you can email during the show any questions you may want to ask and if you are lucky enough, it’ll be read out in the second half). What I liked about this evening was that the actors delved deeper and showed their true emotions live on stage. All of them cried at one point when the spotlight was on them which spread to the audience. It was a very emotional event. Thank goodness we all know Neighbours is now returning as the original penned “Farewell Tour” would have floored most of us. We would have needed weeks of therapy to heal the wounds again. It truly was the ultimate fan experience and not some cheesy greatest hits. They could have easily shoved a 3 minute video on and said “Remember this?” but when visuals were used, it was just background material to complement what the actors were saying. They could have easily waffled on about Scott and Charlene’s wedding but that would have been too predictable. 120 minutes of superb entertainment was loved by a full house at the Bridgewater Hall. They are returning again on Monday for a second helping and Manchester will be still buzzing from tonight. If you are a big Neighbours fan, do your best to get a ticket for the tour, even if it means travelling to another city. Trust me, it’s worth your time, money and effort. I wish I could do it all again! The event ends perfectly. Obviously I’m not going to ruin it by saying how the evening is concluded, but what I witnessed tonight was incredible. The fans and actors shared something special together and the love for Neighbours will clearly never die. As episode 9000 is the next landmark, who knows how many more will follow? (Only John Wong knows that answer!) All I know is tonight was the perfect celebration of what Neighbours has given us so far. We raise our glasses to celebrate. See you all at the Waterhole to continue the party! Just tell the bar staff, Mr Robinson is paying for the first round!

Neighbours cast set to return to London with 40th anniversary tour

Calling all Neighbours fans! The cast have announced their return to London with a 40th anniversary tour.

Familiar faces from Ramsay Street will travel the UK in February 2025 to celebrate four decades of the show’s history.

It follows the success of The Celebration Tour of 2023, and will be running across 5 dates in Birmingham, Cardiff, Glasgow, Manchester and at the world-famous London Palladium , home to some of the biggest entertainment shows in London.

There will be a new line-up, new stories, and a brand-new reason to celebrate in the tour which will be hosted once again by presenter Leah Boleto.

The audience can expect surprises, never before-heard stories, and all the inside scoop on what life is truly like in Erinsborough. The night promises to be the ultimate toast to over 9000 episodes of Neighbours.

Neighbours originally debuted in 1985 and first aired in the UK in 1986 on BBC One. In November 2022, it was announced that Amazon Freevee and Fremantle had agreed to a deal that would restart the series .

However, the fate of the show hangs in the air as it's new home is set to be shut down just months into the new run.

Kylie Minogue, who got her start on the show, said that said she was "baffled" by the news of the soaps return because "everyone went to a lot of effort" for what was initially thought to be the "last-ever" episode.

In 2023 six cast members toured the UK for the sell-out Neighbours – The Celebration Tour.

Neighbours farewell tour provides new update for fans after show return news

The UK tour has a new name.

paul robinson, karl kennedy, wedding, neighbours

Last week it was announced that the soap will be returning , with the tour revealing at the time that it will still be going ahead – though may need a new name.

Following on from that, the show has confirmed that it will now be called The Celebration Tour given the change of circumstances.

Related: Neighbours star Candice Leask responds to speculation over Wendy Rodwell return

"Following the exciting news that the show is returning, we’re rebranding the Farewell Tour (for the third time!) to Neighbours – The Celebration Tour, a name which perfectly represents what it was always planned to be, a celebration of Neighbours past, present and FUTURE!" they tweeted.

Neighbours was cancelled earlier this year by Channel 5 , with its farewell airing over the summer . However, it was revealed last week that it will return on Amazon Freevee.

It has since emerged that hundreds of episodes are in the pipeline , with a source telling Digital Spy : "The plan is for Neighbours to keep its format as a high-volume daily soap opera, so it'll still be the show that fans know and love.

"Plans are being made for two new seasons, which will run for 200 episodes each. It's an incredible result for fans, who thought they'd seen the last of the show when the finale aired in July.

"The logic for Freevee is that daily episode drops will keep fans checking back on the streaming service and engage with other content available."

Neighbours returns in the second half of 2023 with new episodes streaming free on Amazon Freevee in the UK and US. Network 10 will retain first-run rights in Australia for the new series.

Interview: Joe Julians – Creative Director – Neighbours – The Celebration Tour

' src=

One of the biggest events hitting stages across the UK this March, Neighbours – The Celebration Tour arrives in Edinburgh this Wednesday 8th March. Featuring a slew of your Ramsay Street favourites, the show was originally a farewell from the cast of a cancelled institution. A revival thanks to Amazon Freevee (thus proving Jeff Bezos is actually good for something), has transformed melancholy to delight. Show mastermind, Journalist, PR professional, and Neighbours superfan, Joe Julians was kind enough to talk all things Neighbours with The QR…

Joe Julians & some familiar faces! ©️ Joe Julians on Twitter = Neighbours - The Celebration Tour

Hi Joe, so the tour was originally organised as a farewell tour, have you had to make any changes since the good news, or is it just going make the whole thing much more joyous?

Well originally it was a one-night show in London to celebrate 35 years, but it got pulled a few days before when the first COVID lockdowns started happening. And then when the news came of the show ending, it very quickly became clear that one show would not cut it. So that’s when it became The Farewell Tour. Of course, it changed again once the show was revived but largely, we’ve kept things as they were – the most notable difference is how we’re ending it – the rest is just some slightly retooled conversations.

Is the tour a labour of love for you?

Very much so. I’ve been a fan my whole life and this feels as if I’ve written my own fan fiction and somehow willed it into existence. It’s all very surreal. Wonderful, but surreal.

How did the tour get put together in the first place? Was there a lot of interest amongst the cast to be part of it?

It all sort of happened by chance. I found myself in the right place at the right time to float the idea with Dean Elliott from Maple Tree Entertainment who ended up producing it. My wife, Mel, who works in theatre marketing and has been such a driving force on this tour, made some calls and the ball got rolling pretty quickly. None of us had any idea just how big it would become though.

As for the cast, none of who we have needed any convincing to come along. They are all so keen to meet the fans and to give them something special, and they have all said to me at some point how grateful they are to have some of the most passionate fans out there. The cast are looking forward to it just as much as the fans are which is lovely.

neighbours celebration tour running time

There’s such a rich history to the show, how have you even begun to select the footage and stories to include (and leave out)?

With great difficulty. We’ve got around 45-60 seconds to show some highlights per cast member, but where do you even begin with those that have decades worth of stories to pull from? In the end we decided to just focus on making those videos fun and to just show them in action from across the years – you could fill a 20 minute video with just Paul’s wedding highlights alone.

We do have more videos to show moments from across the years, but we didn’t want to show too many as more time watching videos is less time hearing the cast talk – and they have a LOT they can talk about!

neighbours celebration tour running time

Have you been surprised by anything or anyone since being recruited to the cause?

I wouldn’t say surprised by anything per say, with the exception of the show itself being pulled and then revived which was a bit of a bolt out of the blue on both occasions.

Why do you think Neighbours has enjoyed such enduring love in the UK?

I can only really answer that personally, and for me it’s that sense of familiarity and warmth that Neighbours, when at its best, does so well. That’s been some dodgy eras of the show, but when you have writers like Jason Herbison and Shane Isheev working on it like we did in the last few years, people that truly just  get  what the show is, it’s so easy to get sucked back in and fall in love with it all over again.

neighbours celebration tour running time

Amongst the cast you’ve put together, who do you anticipate being the most trouble on tour?

Haha I can’t answer that – it’ll be an awkward few weeks if they read it! In all seriousness though, none of them. All six have been an absolute joy to talk to from start to finish and I’m sure they will be on the road too. I couldn’t have asked for nicer people to work with.

What are you most looking forward to once things get underway.

Just getting on the road. It’s something that has been 3 and a half years in the making, so getting to Belfast and meeting them all in person is going to be such a brilliant moment. For me personally I can’t wait to get to the Palladium. That venue is just steeped in history – and we’ll be putting Annie Jones and Stefan Dennis back on stage there for the first time since 1988 too which is fun.

What do you want your audiences to leave thinking and talking about?

I just hope they all have a great time. We have six absolute legends up on that stage and each of them could fill the whole run time individually, (as evidenced by Alan Fletcher’s solo The Doctor Will See You Now tour which is a great show) so there will be no shortage of moments to talk about after. And if we have any past fans who had bailed out of watching the show over the years but are there because they used to love it so much, if we can get some of them watching it when it comes back then I’ll be pleased.

Neighbours 40th Anniversary Tour

Cult soap opera Neighbours has announced that a number of their cast members will be once again flying from Melbourne to the UK for a nationwide tour in 2025.

The Ramsay Street residents were last in our country last year, prior to commencement of filming of the new series of Neighbours on Amazon Freevee, where  they embarked on a sell-out fifteen date Celebration Tour.

It’s been a troubling time for the show in recent years, having been cancelled by broadcaster Channel 5 in 2022 – but this wasn’t the first time it was taken off the air.

Originally broadcast on the Seven Network, the show didn’t rate well outside of Melbourne where it is produced, and after eight months the final episode aired.

However, rival Channel 10 saw potential in the programme and picked it up for a new run two months later.

Neighbours Tour 5 star reviews

The hugely successful revival saw additional sets added, new families and some now very familiar faces –  Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan and Guy Pearce  – joining the cast.

It also became Australia’s biggest media export, first arriving on BBC One in the UK in a shakeup to their daytime lineup in autumn 1986, before moving to Channel 5 in 2008.

In a soap twist nobody saw coming, streaming giants  Amazon picked Neighbours up  and new episodes have aired daily on their ad-supported service Freevee since last September.

Neighbours cast in 2023

Last month, the serial reached a  huge landmark of 9,000 episodes , and was celebrated with a number of nods to the past.

The upcoming tour will be hosted by Sky News anchor and self professed superfan Leah Boleto, who also appeared on last year’s road trip.

Cast will make appearances in 6 venues across the UK including the world-famous London Palladium, which first welcomed the show to perform as part of the Royal Variety Performance in 1988.

Toadie and Melanie in Neighbours

Organisers have teased a new star line-up, never before-heard stories and surprises plus all the inside scoop on what life is really like in Erinsborough.

Last year, Alan Fletcher (Karl Kennedy), Jackie Woodburne (Susan Kennedy), Stefan Dennis (Paul Robinson), Ryan Maloney (Toadfish Rebecchi), Annie Jones (Jane Harris) and April-Rose Pengilly (Chloe Brennan) took to the stage, but next year’s names have yet to be announced.

The news comes just weeks after Ryan announced his own solo tour .

In an exclusive interview with Metro.co.uk, he told us:

‘I think it’s going to be a little bit different,’

‘I want it to be a sort of cross between television aspects and theatre at the same time and just bring to the forefront that I’m a performer and I’ve been doing it since I was eight years old on stage, doing musicals and comic theatre and performing and hosting – all that kind of jazz

‘I think it’s time to let people in and show them something a bit different, [so they can] see what Ryan’s really like.’

Tickets will go on general sale on 10th April at 10am with a pre-sale on 8th April also at 10am.

Neighbours: The Celebration Tour review – the perfect blend of poignancy and Toadfish jokes

‘All together now: Neeeeighbours’ … (from left) April Rose Pengilly, Ryan Moloney, Susan Kennedy, Alan Fletcher, Annie Jones and Paul Robinson at the London Palladium.

Neighbours being cancelled, Kylie and Jason Donovan reprising their roles and the soap creating international headlines for its celebratory finale … before being revived by a streaming service just over three months later is, no question, peak Neighbours.
